'DON'T BLAME ME, [PART SIX]
-GOTHAM!JERVIS TETCH X READER-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
⋆ 𝐒𝐘𝐍𝐎𝐏𝐒𝐈𝐒 ; Reader and Lee get tied up in a revenge plot.
⋆ tags/warnings. GOTHAM!jervis x female reader. SLOW BURN!!! Not sure how many chapters this will be yet! LOTS OF PLOT SET-UP!! AGE GAP ROMANCE! (reader is Jim and Barbara's daughter) Is reader really young and naive, or is she just young and angry? Lack of Jervis in this one, I apologize. I love Lee and Readers dynamic. The slow burn is slow burning. She fell first, he fell harder. More of reader dissociating. AU where The Ogre's still alive. Reader and Lee being mortal frenemies. Writing this kind of artistically and as character studies for everyone. Small time skip. Reader continues to reference Jervis as "Mr. Tetch." Just you guys wait...they'll get there. I'm taking canon out back and beating it with a stick until it stops twitching.

♫ “I once was poison ivy, but now I'm your daisy.” Don't Blame Me by Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
Nothing seems real anymore.
You'd heard of the crazies running around in Gotham. Whether that was from your father, mindlessly ranting over a stack of police files. Or your mother, who frequently talked to said crazies on a daily basis.
Prior to Mr. Tetch, you'd only ever dealt with one first hand. At least, one that was actively trying to murder your family. And that was none other than Jason Skolimski. The Ogre. You feel your body involuntarily shake when you even think about him.
You're unsure what happened to him, exactly. You were just thirteen when everything got turned on its head. But you do know one thing. His body was shipped to Indian Hill. Your mother and father never mention it. You wonder if your mother ever thinks about it. The small possibility...that man could still be alive.
She'd probably thank him. It was because of him that she embraced her "true self".
You bite your lip, lost in your head. Somethings been missing ever since Mr. Tetch turned out to be...whatever he is. Ever since he left, Tabitha’s seemed happy. Your mom hasn’t. Appearently his hypnotism act was attracting a bunch of publicity to the club.
You should've been thankful, like Tabitha. Good riddance. That should've been the end of it. But you had begged Jim to take you to the GCPD, to ask Alice questions. You needed answers. More than he did.
You always hated the GCPD. The last time you went to the department, you were young and naive. It was ‘take your child to work day.’ You watched a serial cannibal try to bite Harvey Bullock's finger off. Tale as old as time.
It didn't matter, regardless. Jim didn't let you go again. You remember the vague shouting match between you two. Good thing, maybe. Judging by the fact Mr. Tetch hypnotized a family of strongmen to kill everyone in the place. And then Alice impaled herself on a pole. All in the papers.
What does it matter? You're not sure why you let the whole situation get under your skin.
A few dreams, a few encounters, a few shared looks. You find yourself scoffing at your own blind idiocy. Maybe you are still young and naive.
You've been taking your rightful place at the bar, next to Butch. You two have been tossing back shots of tequila, mindlessly ranting at the same time to one another. Again, there’s comfort in knowing you both want to speak to someone that you can’t have.
"I don't understand. She doesn't even look at me anymore. I mean, she just looks at Barbara. Sorry, I know she's your mom, or whatever."
"Don't apologize. I don't understand either. Where the hell even is he?"
"Your dad?" Butch furrows his eyebrows.
No, you think. Mr. Tetch. You don't vocalize that though. You lie with a nod.
Maybe the alcohol caught up to you. You should've known better. Day-drinking never ends well. You cringe, remembering Harvey slurring his words, knocking on your dads apartment door. Either way, you aren't in control of your own body. Before you know it, you're leaving the club, tossing a wad of cash to Butch. He wolf whistles and takes it gladly.
You're just walking down the street. Maybe drunkenly. Kicking loose pebbles on the sidewalk, swinging around streetlamps. You'd expect a weird look or two from bystanders. But you realize no ones on the street except for you.
It's Gotham. You should be more concerned by the fact your alone. But it's broad daylight. Surely nothing could go wrong-
Before the thought can be fully thought out, a pair of arms grabs you from behind. You find yourself kicking and screaming, being dragged by a heavy-set man. Yay.
Huffing through the set of hands over your mouth, you're shoved into a trunk, light significantly dimming as it's closed. You hear the lock click, and you stop fussing. Attempting to calm yourself, you search your pockets for your phone. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. Your mom is a crime lord. Your dad is a cop, or rather, was one. You'll be fine.
You can't seem to find your phone in your pockets though. You feel your heartrate speed as you frantically start to search. The bar. You left it at the fucking bar. Nice fucking job Y/N. You definitely wouldn't survive in a horror movie.
You give up. You're defeated. Maybe they'll be a pair of nice human traffickers. Take pity on you. You sigh and throw your head back for the rest of the car ride. Squeezing your eyes shut, you manage to accept whatever fate is in store for you.
You had a good run, champ. A voice that sounds an awful lot like your fathers praises in the back of your mind.
Tumblr media
Like a ragdoll, you're roughly placed on the floor. Eyes still trying to get used to the bright light, you feel both dizzy and discombobulated. Your head is pounding from any alcohol you had prior. Picked a great day to drink.
Blinking wildly, the first thing you manage to digest is being chained to a bathtub.
"Y/N?" A voice asks, and your eyes snap up. Staring wide eyed at you, just tied up as you are, is Lee Thompkins.
A million thoughts rush through your head. The first one you promptly register is what is this bitch doing here?
"Lee?" You mumble. You think this might be a hallucination, but if you were going to hallucinate someone, it wouldn't be her.
You two stare at each other for a moment. Tense, awkward. The last time you saw her was when your father witnessed her having moved on. You still remember the feeling, standing on your tiptoes to look through a window. Seeing your fathers heart break before your eyes.
You never really talked to her. She always tried to talk to you though. A lot. Too much. But she could never be the Barbara you used to know. No matter how hard she tried.
"What the fuck is going on?" You whisper yell. Lee looks at you, swallowing.
"Tetch blames Jim for Alice, and we're his means for revenge."
At the mention of his name, your blood runs cold. You didn't expect to ever see him again. Let alone see Lee. You watch, petrified, as Lee fidgets around through the bathroom cabinet.
For the most part the room is silent, other than the clanking of items being searched through.
"Leave it." Is all you say, watching her look uncontrollably for something to pick the lock. She sighs.
"You expect me to just sit here and die?"
"Yes." You hiss. She doesn’t turn to look at you, but you can imagine her face, disappointed and irritated. You don't care. You get mean when you're nervous.
"…It's not my fault. Jim is who he is, Y/N. I can't change that. Neither can you."
The truth stings harder coming from her of all people.
"Oh, give yourself some credit, Ms. Thompkins," You say the name snappish. "Without you, I hardly doubt we'd be in this mess."
That makes her perk up. Her nostrils flare, and the clanking sounds louder.
"You don't seriously blame me for this?" She still doesn't make eye contact with you, but she motions wildly to the locks on your ankles. You give a nonchalant, bitter shrug.
"If you didn't leave him, he wouldn't have become a bountyhunter."
"You don't know that." Her eyes soften in hurt. It fuels you.
"No. But I know you're a whore." The words escape your mouth before you internalize them. There's a long beat of silence before she finally turns to look at you, still sitting on the ground. She huffs.
"Maybe you're just really scared and this is your way of coping," She starts, "Or maybe you're just insanely committed to taking care of your father. Either way, all I'm interested in is getting out of here."
You look at each other with a mutual mix of regret.
"Try a cuticle pusher." You finally say, smiling humorlessly. "My dad's was a cop, after all. Taught me how to pick locks. I can walk you through it."
She nods. You nod. It's not the same feeling of understanding you get when talking with Butch. But...it's not too far off either.
"You really are his daughter." She sighs, snatching a cuticle pusher up from the counter.
"Thanks."
"It's not a compliment."
Tumblr media
"Remember you have to-"
"I got it." Lee cuts you off, fiddling with the lock. You put your hands up in mock defense. At least your humors returning back to you.
"Can I ask you something?" You start off, slow. She glances at you for a moment, before returning to her chains.
"As long as it's not about why I left your dad." She mutters.
"Not exactly," You pause, looking for the right words to say. "Why did you return to Gotham? You looked all cozy down south."
"It's really none of your business."
You let out a loud scoff at that.
"You were ready to become my stepmother less than a year ago," You continue. At this, her movements falter. "You could've chosen any city. Any job. But you chose Gotham."
"You realize we both might die today, right?"
"Yes. And I don't want to die not knowing why you left us, just to come back and dangle it in front of my dad."
Her movements stop completley.
"I didn't come here for James Gordon." She's firm in her stance. In one last fluid moment, the lock unclicks before our eyes. She heaves a small sigh of relief.
She offers you the cuticle pusher. You take it. About three seconds in, it breaks. Shit.
Not the worst fate in the world, you think. You'd be able to see Mr. Tetch again. Ask him all the unanswered questions. That is, if he doesn't immediately kill you. Maybe you’re a fool to think a part of him enjoyed your company.
"You can still escape." You nod to Lee, hopeful she'll leave, hopeful she'll stay. With what you said to her earlier, you wouldn't blame her.
"I'm not leaving you here," She speaks. Her tone is gentle. Somewhat motherly. The sentiment actually makes guilt bubble up inside you. "There's got to be something else."
Looking around the room madly, you two are interrupted in your searching's.
"My, my," A voice drawls. You know that voice. "You two have been busy."
There he is.
Jervis stands tall, looking down at the both of you. You meet his gaze. For the first time in quite awhile, that feeling of electricity shoots through you again. You want to tear yourself apart. Find whatever part of your brain is fascinated with the idea of this man. Cut it out of you, examine it, and throw it away.
"Now, if you'd kindly join me in the dining room?" He speaks. You notice his eyes are focused solely on you, effectively ignoring Lee. He still looks relatively angry though.
Despite his demeanor, he offers you a hand to help you up. Lee watches his movements. You take his arm without question. That seems to spark something in his eyes. In Lee's eyes, too.
...You're unsure if that's a good or bad sign.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 // Collab Masterlist
Tumblr media
Part 1 - Not Being Able To Concentrate Because She's There
Cha Eunwoo didn’t believe in love at first sight. Or upon a second or even a third look. He was certain that it was nothing but a phenomenon of the hopeless romantic. A guise that someone who wanted to fall in love badly held over the top of feelings that could be more easily described as attractive or interesting. Eunwoo had met many people in his lifetime that he could easily commit to saying he was attracted to or interested in upon first sight. Such was the nature of being human, so he thought.
However, love was something that came with time. A feeling that grew with experiences shared together, not something you felt straight away. He was a firm believer of this.
So what exactly could he call the feeling that was making his heart beat erratically in his chest as he watched you right now?
Blinking forcibly in attempts to regain control over his physical reaction, Eunwoo licked at his lips, realising his breath was heightened. Now clamping his lips together, he did everything he could to tear his eyes away from your direction and back to the guide in front of him.
“This is the campus library. I hope you took down notes on how to get here because you’ll be spending a lot of your time cramming here. There are eleven floors and this place houses pretty much every book about absolutely everything you could ask a question about. This area here is known as the main study lobby. Most students find the second-floor study area pretty noisy though so if you’re…”
Eunwoo lost his focus again on the tour and slipped back to you at one of the tables quietly reading a book. Sliding your hand onto your neck to better support your head as you continued perusing the pages before you, Eunwoo gulped as his skin began to tingle.
“Its attraction,” he breathed out slowly, trying to claim the feeling overwhelming him as that. It didn’t feel like enough to say it was mere attraction though and Eunwoo frowned. “I’m interested too.”
“And I’m intrigued,” another voice announced, nudging Eunwoo playfully. Glancing at the fellow freshman at his side, Eunwoo cringed at his high school buddy Harvey overhearing his outspoken thoughts. “Who are you attracted to? The tour guide? She’s like forty, dude.”
“No, but if you are, by all means ask her out when we’re done.”
“So then who? The rest of us are guys. But hey, if you’re unsure and want to experiment-”
“Could you stop yourself from talking instead?” Eunwoo replied dryly, dragging his feet reluctantly as the group started to move along. He glanced over his shoulder back in your direction, blinking when he found the table you had been reading at now empty. Spinning around, he thought he saw the end of your ponytail descending the stairs at the front of the building but he couldn’t be too sure.
Harvey jostled him around. “Whoever she is, maybe you imagined her. She could be the girl of your college dreams.”
“Sometimes I wonder if I would be better off imagining up a new friend than having you around, Harvey,” Eunwoo commented before letting out a sigh.
Perhaps you were just a fleeting moment of temptation, after all.
Tumblr media
Eunwoo was simultaneously relieved and horrified to find that you existed the following day at his first lecture. Harvey’s teasing had simmered down somewhat when the tour moved out of the library and Eunwoo began to believe maybe his friend was right and he conjured you up.
Seeing you in the flesh again solved the puzzle of whether you existed or not.
However, as the hairs stood up on his arms and his eyes fixated on the side of your head as you moved across the front of the lecture hall to the staircase, Eunwoo was troubled by seeing you in person again.
His physical reaction only felt greater this time as well.
Not this row, he begged internally as you came closer to where he was set up, closing his eyes when you diverted towards him. Of course, the universe was testing him right now. Still, he didn’t understand why you of all the people in this world had to cause his insides to implode with nervous excitement like this.
“Hello,” you greeted softly and pointed at the seat you had stopped before. “Can I sit next to you?”
“Oh uh um well uh-”
You grinned. “It’s just the centre of the room and the row, so...”
“That’s exactly why I chose this spot,” he admitted and you bit your lip to control your delight before sitting down.
“I’ve always been the only one who chooses by the environment on where to sit that I’ve known of.”
“Well it makes the most sense to,” he managed to comment and you nodded along eagerly. “You have to be comfortable in order to learn.”
“Precisely! I’m so glad to finally meet someone who thinks the same. I’m Y/N and you are?”
“Eunwoo,” he replied, taking the hand you held outstretched towards him.
He had to clamp his mouth shut before the squeak building up in his throat was expelled, his cheeks feeling hot with his efforts. You mirrored the flushed expression before letting go.
“It’s nice to meet you, Eunwoo. I hope this semester will be productive for the pair of us.”
The first lecture was anything but productive. Eunwoo couldn’t concentrate for the first time in a learning environment in years. And when he hadn’t been as focused in the past, it was due to being unwell and needing to be resting at home, not because a gorgeous girl had sat down beside him. He was well versed in ignoring others around him when learning.
It threw him completely to be unable to focus at all with you next to him.
Eunwoo chalked it up to first day nerves. Or anything else he could kid himself of. But after a second lecture with no true coherency of what was being spoken about in the class and then on the third being called upon and blanking over an answer he knew in great detail from previous study, Eunwoo knew it was due to you.
The problem was he liked you too much to try and avoid you. It wasn’t just the physical reaction now either. Every time you arrived early for class and you chatted over topics before the professor arrived. He was enamoured by the way you thought. Conversation was all too easy between you.
Which was why you didn’t hesitate to gesture to his empty page. “Another day of not taking down notes?”
“Hah, yeah.”
“Don’t tell me you’re one of those geniuses who don’t need to write down information to remember and ace all your tests,” you breathed, leaning towards him.
Eunwoo wished right now he was one of those types. He was immensely grateful that all lectures were recorded so he could cram in note-taking later when he was back home. Staring down at his blank page, he let out a nervous laugh. “Nope, that’s not me.”
“Then? Is the content too hard? I could help you during lunch today to get your head around it?” you offered, blinking softly.
He should have been honest with you then, however, the offer to have a meal with you seemed more desirable than anything else and he found himself nodding along. “Could you?”
“It’ll be my pleasure! I can’t have you falling behind so soon into the semester.” Eunwoo groaned out loud as you giggled. Glancing at you with a brief pout, he then grinned. “I’ll buy lunch then for your help.”
“Ooh, deal!”
Tumblr media
It was evident even to you after twenty minutes of attempting to explain the situation that Eunwoo was distracted. You didn’t know why, however. At first, he was determined to make his way through the entirety of lunch fully invested in what you had to say. And for that matter, he had been invested enough to hear each word you spoke, they just didn’t make enough sense. Was it because of the perfume you had on today? It had been fragrant in class earlier on, but now squeezed into a tiny table at the back of one of the bustling campus cafes, it washed over him completely. Was it the way you brushed your hair away from your neck and placed it all to one side of your head, exposing your delicate skin? Honestly, Eunwoo couldn’t tell why he was being like this, and admittedly he was growing quite concerned for his sanity.
You were driving him down a path he had never wandered before.
Harvey’s remark about university being known as an experimental time in a young person’s life came to the forefront of his brain. Was his physical attraction to you that out of control that he couldn’t focus in your company? Or was it just you as a whole?
He whimpered with the lack of an answer.
Glancing away from your book, you placed down your pen and sighed. “This isn’t helping, is it?”
“No.”
“And it’s not the professor that’s the problem, is it?” you continued and Eunwoo shook his head sadly. “I bet the content isn’t that hard for you-”
“It’s you.”
“Excuse me?” you asked slowly, brows knitting together. “I’m the problem?”
Eunwoo opened his mouth, only for embarrassment to flare up within his stomach. How could he tell you that it was because of boyish feelings that he couldn’t concentrate in your company? He’d barely known you for a week now. It would haunt him for the rest of his semester if he confessed this early into things.
However, his lack of response had done enough damage, your hands hastily grabbing for your belongings scattered over the table in between lunch. “I’m sorry I’m such a problem. You should have told me earlier, Eunwoo.”
“No, it’s nothing like that!”
“I’ll sit somewhere else on Monday so you can concentrate on the lecture. Good luck with your semester.”
“Y/N!” he called out hopelessly, reaching out for your lower arm. You halted all movement and stared at his gentle grip over your arm.
He knew he had no other option.
“I can’t concentrate because ever since I met you, I can’t stop thinking about you.”

When it was announced that The Rosie O'Donnell Show would be back for one night only with a guest list of about 15 million Broadway talents, many of us wondered, would it be a return to the glory days of her multiple Emmy-winning daytime talk show or more like her ill-fated attempt to resuscitate the primetime variety format on NBC in 2008. It turned out to borrow from both those predecessors while evolving into something completely different — a low-tech lovefest that felt like eavesdropping on a group chat among friends looking out for one another in a time of need.
It was spontaneous, messy and blighted by some of the worst audio glitches imaginable. Yet it was often affectingly intimate, and even over an endurance-testing three-and-a-half commercial-free hours, also strangely addictive. The lack of slickness seemed to carry through to the relaxed manner of the guests, and their refreshing unpretentiousness.
Conceived by actor-producer (and occasional tech-support helpmate) Erich Bergen and live-streamed on Broadway.com and the website's YouTube channel, the show was a benefit for The Actors Fund, the charitable organization founded in 1882 that supports performers and behind-the-scenes theater workers. It raised more than half-a-million dollars, O'Donnell announced at the end of the marathon, sitting in a Hamilton hoodie and offering a champagne toast in a glass emblazoned with the face of Barbra Streisand.
She conducted the entire show from behind a laptop in her New Jersey garage, its floor spattered with the paint spillage of countless craft projects. "I'm a little bit of a Broadway nerd, I admit it," said O'Donnell, establishing her dual role as host and superfan.
Part of the show's unique pleasure was seeing favorite Broadway performers chilling in their own homes, almost all of them dressed down, with little visible attention to makeup or hair, and zero concern about unflattering angles. It was a great equalizer, proving that even artists who can hold packed theaters in the palm of their hands with a song are housebound and trying to make the best of a bad situation just like the rest of us — staying close to their families, killing time, learning to cook, wondering how long this unnerving isolation will last. Or how much longer we can put off that shower.
It was kind of comforting to see Idina Menzel sitting by her microwave and confessing, "I guess I'm going a little bonkers," while lamenting a failed lasagna attempt and sharing the challenges of homeschooling her son when she's no math genius. Likewise, hearing Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker talk about watching Columbo reruns or catching up on The Crown, while SJP begged for no spoilers on the final episode of The Sopranos, which she may now get to at last. Seeing Annette Bening on her Los Angeles balcony wearing a "Make America Kind Again" baseball cap was as much a tonic as watching Neil Patrick Harris do a card trick with his adorable twins. And who doesn't want to meet Gloria and Emilio Estefan's cute rescue dogs or hear about Lin-Manuel Miranda's kids' reaction to their first exposure to Singin' in the Rain?
Then there were the musical interludes.
Where else could you catch Patti LuPone, in magnificent voice, singing the urgently upbeat 1930s standard "A Hundred Years From Today," unaccompanied while sitting by the jukebox in her basement? Or Kelli O'Hara nestled into an armchair honoring Stephen Sondheim's 90th birthday by wrapping her crystalline soprano around "Take Me to the World," a hymn to unity from Evening Primrose? Or husband and wife Audra McDonald and Will Swenson duetting on the Charlie Chaplin evergreen, "Smile," from their Westchester living room? Or Darren Criss pouring his heart into another Sondheim classic about the desire for connection, "Being Alive," from Company, accompanying himself in a lovely pop arrangement on acoustic guitar from the sofa of his Los Angeles home? And while sound problems plagued Barry Manilow's selection of hits, ending with "I Made It Through the Rain," I was tickled to see his Judy Garland Kleenex dispenser.
Many of the song choices were thoughtfully apropos of the current crisis, offering comforting reassurance of the eventual return of resilience and togetherness while people in major cities all over the country self-isolate as the infection rate of the coronavirus pandemic continues to climb. Maybe Tituss Burgess at his home keyboard singing "The Glory of Love" is exactly the kind of uplift we all need right now.
Even in the seemingly random numbers, the entire enterprise was characterized by a spirit of generosity and sharing.
Kristin Chenoweth celebrated a Starbucks romance in "Taylor the Latte Boy." Matthew Morrison goofed it up on ukulele to a mashup of "The Bare Necessities" and "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" from his Disney Dreamin' album. Alan Menken whipped through a medley of his songs from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Little Shop of Horrors, among others, at the piano. Ben Platt, also at the keyboard, did Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love." And Adrienne Warren, the sensational star of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, growled out "Simply the Best" from her bathtub. That was on the third attempt during a particularly troublesome audio patch, by which time her bubbles were history.
Prompted by O'Donnell, more than one guest reminded viewers that The Actors Fund is not just about Broadway artists pulling star salaries but also stagehands, makeup artists, wigmakers and ushers who work in what is very much a gig economy. The organization provides emergency financial assistance, social services, affordable housing, healthcare and insurance counseling and addiction support.
"Everything's a one-off," said Tony-winning actor Brian Stokes Mitchell, who serves as chairman of The Actors Fund. "That's how we get by, and many people are living on the edge right now."
"We're all just one, two, maybe three paychecks away from bankruptcy," added Billy Porter, whose mother is in an Actors Fund nursing home. "In this community, our whole job description is insecurity," said Judith Light.
Porter, along with Lea Salonga and longtime activist Light recalled how Broadway was on the frontlines of another life-threatening struggle during the early days of the AIDS crisis. All of them urged viewers to stay strong and take the time to reflect on the value of solidarity.
While O'Donnell has never been shy about her opposition to Donald Trump and everything he stands for, the show was remarkably light on politics, with just the occasional dig slipping through. She opened with a little celebratory "Yay!" while admitting she had missed the president's daily coronavirus press update, and then explained that she and her guests were not there to talk Trump. When Harvey Fierstein, O'Donnell's 2005 stage husband in Fiddler on the Roof, reminded her of all the election work still to be done, she said, "Let's all just know, we deserve a leader who tells the truth." And the delays in making coronavirus testing more widely available prompted a comment that the government should have gotten busy on that back in January when the writing was already on the wall.
Mostly, however, the hastily revamped Rosie O'Donnell Show was about bringing people together at this time of anxiety and isolation, as the host reconnected with artists whom she has championed since her reign as the Queen of Nice. "Everyone in the community loves you," she told Chita Rivera in a particularly effusive greeting. "You are our queen mother!"
Many of the performers would have been decompressing after rehearsals or Sunday matinees if the Broadway shutdown hadn't happened — Criss in American Buffalo, Broderick and Parker in Plaza Suite, Warren in Tina, Lauren Patten and Elizabeth Stanley in Jagged Little Pill. Sunday would have been LuPone's opening night in the gender-flipped revival of Company. Gavin Creel, who abruptly ended his London run in Waitress to fly home and is in isolation in a cabin in upstate New York, revealed the fear that he might have contracted the virus, given that several others in the cast have fallen ill, with one of them testing positive.
The show bridged the gap separating us from artists whose work we normally experience on the other side of the footlights. Most of us will never again get to see Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber exchange greetings in song on the birthday the two composers happen to share. From those celebrated veterans to rising-star newbies, the common denominator here was everybody facing the crisis just like us, reaching out a hand of friendship, albeit from a mandatory safe distance.

Hey dude! Do you have any recommendations for LGBTQ+ movies in the romance genre that have like a happy ending. I really don't care how old they are. I'm feeling the Gay™ hence I need the Gay™. You feel me?
HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII NONNIE
Tumblr media
First sorry for taking so long, not only did I have to timeline this :) but :) my computer :) froze :) after writing like :) 2 pages :) and I had to do it again :)
So anyway let it be said, the LGBT dialogue is one of osmosis and shared growth and awareness. Some of these films will be very poorly dated, but as you (thankfully) mentioned that them being old wasn’t a *problem*, expect a lot of old stuff. Because one of the most important things to have under your belt when talking about the LGBT media representation battle is the actual journey from A to B – be that incrementalization, subtextual inclusion, text-breeching features, outright evocative and groundbreaking films at the time (which is what MOST of this list will be) and an improvement in our dialogue; let us never forget that while tr*nss*xual is considered a slur and transgender is proper, tr*nss*xual was at one point the politically correct way to speak it – things like that breach in our growing understanding of the spectrum of human sexuality.
I *WILL* disclaimer these aren’t all romance, so if you explicitly want romance, google them and take a look if it sounds to appeal, but I’m taking this as a general cinema history plug considering what a confused mess fandom conversation about LGBT history in film or modern text as applicable, accepted or not.
Wonder Bar (1936) (I wouldn’t really call this queer cinema, but if you have the time to watch it too, I think it was the first explicit mention of homosexual engagement even if it was fleetingly brief. You might even call it Last Call style. A blink and you’ll miss it plug that was still decades ahead of its time)
Sylvia Scarlet (1936) (Again, I wouldn’t call this queer cinema, but a lot of the community takes it as the first potential trans representation on TV due to the lead literally swapping gender presentation, even if the presentation is… not what we would modernly call representation IMO)
Un Chant d'Amour (1950) (Worth it for the sheer fact that it pissed off fundies so bad they took it all the way to the US supreme court to get it declared obscene.)
The Children’s Hour (1961) (also known as the 1961 lesson to “don’t be a gossipy, outting bitch”)
Victim (1961) (The first english film to use the word “homosexual” and to focus explicitly on gay sexuality. People might look on it disdainfully from modern lenses, but it really helped progress british understanding of homosexuality)
Scorpio Rising (1964) (Lmao this one deadass got taken to court when it pissed people off and California had to rule that it didn’t count as obscene bc it had social value, worth it for the history if nothing else)
Theorem (1968) (Because who doesn’t wanna watch a 60s flick about a bisexual angel, modern issues and associations be damned)
The Killing of Sister George (1968) (by the makers of What Ever Happened To Baby Jane)
Midnight Cowboy (1969) (…have I had sassy contagonists in RP make a Dean joke off of this more than once, maybe)
Fellini-Satyricon (1969) (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS)
The Boys in the Band (1970) (This… this… this made a lot of fuss. Just remember leather)
Pink Narcissus (1971) (a labor of love shot on someone’s personal camera)
Death in Venice (1971) (This is basically a T&S prequel but whatever, based on a much older book)
Cabaret (1972)
Pink Flamingos (1972) (SHIT’S WILD)
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) (The title doesn’t lie, be warned)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) [god I hope you’ve at least seen this]
Fox and His Friends (1975) (some really hard lessons that are still viable today, that just because someone acknowledges your sexuality doesn’t mean they give a shit about you as a person, and that some will even abuse the knowledge for gain)
The Terence Davies Trilogy (1983) (REALLY interesting history look it up, it’s sort of one of those “drawn from own experience” story short sets)
The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) (Documentary)
Desert Hearts (1985) (Pretty much the first film to put lesbianism into a good light as a true focus based on a novel from the sixties)
Parting Glances (1986) (the only film its creator got out before his death from the aids epidemic)
Law of Desire (1987) (two men and a trans woman in a love triangle, kinda ahead of its time)
Maurice (1987) (This one’s really interesting, cuz it was based on a book made about 15 years before it, but the book itself had been written half a century earlier and wasn’t published until after the guy died, he just thought it’d never get published Cuz Gay, so basically it’s based on a story written in like, the 20s finally getting screen time. It has a bittersweet but positive-leaning-ish ending without disregarding the cost that can come with it and even addresses class issues at the same time 100% DO RECOMMEND)
Tongues Untied (1989) (a documentary to give voices to LGBT black men)
Longtime Companion (1990) (This one’s title alone is history, based on a NYT phrasing for how they talked about people’s partners dying, eg longtime companion, during the AIDS epidemic)
Paris Is Burning (1990) (Drag culture and related sexual and gender identity exploration as it intersected with class issues and other privileges explored in a documentary)
The Crying Game (1992)( I should correct this that I guess it’s more, 1992 considered, “SURPRISE, DIL HAS A DILL!” – I guess I really didn’t do that summary justice by modern language and dialogue as much as how people in the 90s were talking about that and that’s a my bad. LIKE. SEE, EVEN I CAN FUCK UP MY LANGUAGE I’M SORRY CAN I BLAME THE STRAIGHTS T_T) #90skidproblems – I guess I should call it a trans film. And this alone tells me I should go watch it again to recode it in my brain modernly rather than like circa de la 2000 understanding.
The Bird Cage (1996) (So you mix drag culture, otherwise heterosexually connected lovebirds, and then realize the girl comes from an alt-rightish house and the guy comes from a Two Dads Home and does cabaret, how to deal with the issues OF this conflict when it’s between you and your happiness, even if the fight isn’t even your own as much as it is that of the person you love. The answer is PROBABLY NOT to dress in drag and pretend to be straight, but what are you going to do? – while played for laughs we’d consider modernly crude, the fact that they even dared to approach this narrative was pretty loud)
The Celluloid Closet (1996) (Ever heard of the Vito Russo test for LGBT representation? This is based on a book by Vito Russo.)
Happy Together (1997) (Ain’t this shit an ironic name; a mutual narrative, via chinese flick, of hong kong ceding to china and an irrevocably tangled MLM pairing as a giant mirrored metaphor)
Boys Don’t Cry (1999) (one of the most groundbreaking films about trans identity at the time)
Stranger Inside (2001) (As easy as it is to recoil to the idea of “black gays in jail”, the film makers actually went and consulted prisoners and put a great deal of focus into intersectional african american issues that really weren’t around even in straight films at the time)
Transamerica (2005) (While it made a bit of a fuss for not casting an actual trans actor, it was one of the first times a big budget studio really tried to tackle it which really pushed us forward)
Call Me by Your Name (2017) (since I’ve apparently leaned really heavy old cinema throw in a modern one lmaooooo)
Also honorable The Kids Are All Right (2010) mention for the sake of the fucking title alone.
And to any incarnation of “On the Road” by Kerouac, which
Was originally a book
Released a sanitized de-gayed edition because of the times
Later released the full homo manuscript
had a few film adaptations
Was one of Kripke’s founding inspirations for Supernatural once he left behind “Some reporter guy chases stories” and took the formula of Sal and Dean (and tbh later, Carlo) in a beat generation vibe gone modern as we know it today.
Reading both versions of this can actually help some folks currently understand that when you get confused over some shit (WHY IS CARLO SO UPSET? WHY IS HE ACTING LIKE AN UPSET GIRLFRIEND??? WHY IS HE SO JEALOUS AND SAD WHEN DEAN IS AROUND GIRLS???? WE JUST DONT KNOWWWWWWWWWWWWW) it’s because some big money asshat bleached the content, and sometimes, it takes a while for the full script to come out and again, surprise, it’s been GAY, they just didn’t want to OFFEND anybody. *jazz hands*
Now if you wanna go WAY WAY BACK, during 191X years, a bunch of gender role flicks came out like Charley’s Aunt, Mabel’s Blunder and the Florida Enchantment.
Also where is @thecoffeebrain-blog to yell about the necessity of watching Oz, for the next few hours? But no, seriously, just look into the entire LGBT *HISTORY* of Oz.
Beyond that though I’m gonna stop here cuz hi that’s a lot. I really don’t know how much counts as “happy ending” but if I had to give an LGBT cinema rec list, that’s it as a sum. I don’t really have like, a big portfolio of UWU HAPPY ENDING GAYS because 1. there aren’t a lot of those but 2. to me, it’s not about the ending, it’s about the journey. Be that in flick or through culture and history itself.
If you want more happy ending stuff, you definitely have to look at 2010+, but it’s not like we’re in a rich and fertile landscape yet so honestly just googling that would probably serve you better since I don’t explicitly explore romance genre or happy endings to really have a collection. LGBT life is hard and film often reflects that if we’re making genuine statements about it and really representing it, and we’re just now getting to a point of reliably having the chance at a happy ending. That or maybe someone can add like “Explicit happy endings” lists after this that has more experience in that subgenre.
Also, I can’t emphasize ENOUGH to remember what was progressive then is not what is progressive now, and frankly, what some people think is progressive now they’ll probably look back on what they said and feel really fuckin’ embarrassed. See: “It’s not text because by alt right homophobic dialogue, M/M sex isn’t gay if you do the secret handshake” MGTOW kinda crazy ass dialogue or parallel narratives they inspire that encourage self-closeting and denial based on the pure idea that being gay makes you somehow lesser, so It’s Not That. Like. I am. 99% sure. At least half of the people talking in this fandom. Are going to regret that the internet is forever. And maybe hope hosting servers end in the inevitable nuclear war that will annihilate this planet.
Also, edit: Speaking of mistaken dialogues and words aging poorly, I’d like to apologize from the poor description I rendered “The Crying Game” with, but that really goes to show how deep-seated the issue is we can so casually fuck up identifying a trans narrative as SURPRISE DICK IS GAY when we were all absorbing the content like 20+ years ago and HOW HARD it can be to de-code yourself from that kind of programming because here I am, writing a giant assed rep post and fucking it up because my brain hadn’t soaked that movie since Y2K. Guess what, time for me to go watch the Crying Game again.

so that article i just reblogged confirmed that:
1. charlotte is definitely, 100%, irreversibly, undeniably dead.
2. it was more than likely a decision from the writers room to kill charlotte off, as opposed to jessica brown findlay leaving the show of her own volition and the writers having to suddenly come up with a way to write charlotte out and have it make some sort of sense. (it still doesn’t, btw.)
so now all im wondering is... why? why did they choose to kill charlotte off right after making one of the most pivotal decisions that they could have possibly made in regards to her character? seriously, can anyone tell me what the point of charlotte being a bawd was if they were just going to kill her off after having that storyline lasting three (3) episodes?
what was the point of introducing that pincher brother as charlotte’s new rival/“love interest” (hah) if he was going to threaten the lives of her girls, be violent with her, nearly KILL her loved ones by committing arson, and then have a direct role in the fight that caused her death? what was the point of them stressing that charlotte was margaret’s heir at the end of season 2, having charlotte bring up her past conflict with margaret after she reunites with her, only for charlotte to die five minutes later before margaret and charlotte’s new conflict (margaret wanting them to go to america) can be resolved?
what was the point of having a good portion of the trailer for this season centered on charlotte? what was the point of promoting fitzwells/ladyharlot as the new main relationship of the show if charlotte was going to die three episodes into the season? what was the point? why?
and what really makes me mad is that i can definitely see what the future of the show is now that it’s confirmed that charlotte is definitely dead: her death is going to be used as a device to further the plotlines of the rest of the characters:
now that charlotte is dead, margaret is obviously going to have to stay in england and care for her family, and she’ll probably become the bawd of the greek street house again.
lucy is probably going to fall apart from grief now that charlotte is dead, and i can see her either 1. wanting to back off from her role in the harvey’s house, 2. throwing herself into the harvey’s house full-swing and isolating herself from her family bc she wants to prove that she can still be a bawd without charlotte around, or 3. going back into her obsession with death from last season and wanting to get revenge for charlotte’s death
obviously lady isabella is going to be consumed with grief because, as far as we can tell, isabella actually had feelings for charlotte, even though (according to the showrunners) charlotte doesn’t have feelings for her/thinks of their relationship as a business relationship and nothing more. and, judging by their interactions earlier in the season, im almost certain that theyre going to make lady isabella and nancy get together, which is just.. wrong. on so many levels.
lady isabella’s obvious grief over charlotte’s death will also probably serve a place in quigley and blayne’s plotlines, since they both have scores that they need to settle with isabella. my guess is that there’s going to be a rumor in the papers about isabella’s sexuality and her “close relationship” with charlotte– this will also probably tie into sophia’s elopement somehow. im confident in the theory that the footman that sophia eloped with is working with blayne, so my guess is that the footman or one of isabella’s other servants will be the one who goes to the papers with that under blayne’s guidance.
the pincher brothers are probably going to get prosecuted for their part in charlotte’s death, and, if my hunch is correct, that scene of margaret shooting someone in the trailer is going to be margaret shooting one of them– probably hal, which will traumatize/upset emily lacey, whose already going to have a rough time next episode because she knew that hal ran off to go confront isaac and charlotte and will 100% be able to connect the dots between hal, isaac, and charlotte’s death.
charlotte was well liked in the community so i expect that the entire cast will mourn her; she’ll probably have a memorial like mary cooper and kitty carter had. im expecting a montage of some sorts too
im honestly angry about this because, now that i sit down and look at it, its SO predictable how the rest of the season is going to go for the characters. i will admit that i was shocked at the plot twist initially, but now, all i feel is numbness.
charlotte’s death– if they HAD to kill her off– should have been done better than this. charlotte’s main character arcs have been about her freedom and protecting her family and her house, yet she dies in an accident over a man who almost caused her love ones to die and tried to pimp her and the girls out? and to make matters worse... none of the viewers (or even the characters in the show, really) cares about the two characters involved in her death EXCEPT for charlotte (and, apparently, emily).
the fact that the harlots writers promoted charlotte as much as they did before the start of this season, and the fact that they promoted her relationship with lady isabella so much, really proves that the writers had pretty malicious and queerbaiting intentions for this season. after hyping up charlotte, a bisexual woman, as the new main character of the show, and promoting her relationship with isabella, a lesbian, as the main romance, they turned around and not only said that “oh, there’s no REAL romance between charlotte and isabella,” but they killed charlotte off!!
and this is even worse once you take into account the amount of LGBT characters they’ve already gotten rid of with NO explanation or having it make very little sense as a whole: amelia and violet, both of whom were major characters from the start of the show, and rasselas, who, despite being a supporting character, had some of the largest impacts on the plot of the show. hell, even rasselas’s boyfriend was killed off in between season 1 and season 2!
now charlotte, and probably fredo and his boyfriend given the fact that the molly house plotline is inevitably going to go sour.
i really expected more from this show. i thought that it was better than this, but i guess i was wrong, huh? they need to do better.

Suits: Harvey (8x16)
Wow, okay, I'm sorry... I'm not convinced. I feel bad, but that just did not work for me.
Cons:
I'm talking about Donna and Harvey. I'm sure there were plenty of people watching that episode who were overjoyed that their ship had finally set sail, but I was just completely underwhelmed. I promise you, this isn't just about me shipping Marvey, either. On its own merits, Harvey and Donna hooking up just does not work for me on a fundamental level. I'm going to break down some of the reasons why.
First of all, on a superficial level, I just didn't buy their chemistry in that final scene. It wasn't embarrassingly bad or anything, but I found Donna and Thomas much more compelling in terms of chemistry, so that's a bummer.
Then, there's the hit-you-over-the-head-with-a-hammer script. As the episode ends, Robert makes this big declaration about how going through something difficult makes you realize what's important in life - and for him, that's his wife. Then, Alex repeats the same thing, saying he needs to get home to his wife. So here's the problem with this - Harvey had just asked first Robert, and then Alex, to go grab a burger with him, and they both turned him down to go be with their wives. This doesn't read like Harvey is secretly pining for a specific woman, it reads like he's just generally lonely.
Then we have a moment with Samantha. She makes a comment about what she's going to do without the one person who she always wants to go to when she has good or bad news, and Harvey abruptly has a light bulb moment and leaves, to rush off to Donna because he's apparently just realized that Donna is that person for him. I mean... that's a cliche, for one thing. And for another, this whole narrative doesn't bear itself out in a satisfying way at all. What I realized watching this episode is that the last several seasons of Suits have made a convincing case for the fact that Donna is still pining for Harvey, but it hasn't made a case for the reverse of that. Sure, Harvey loves and cares for Donna deeply, but Harvey's sudden realization here doesn't bear out under what we've seen over the last few seasons. I just don't buy that he loves her. This is sort of a lose-lose situation for me, because I didn't like the implication that Harvey just realized what had been right in front of him all along, but I think I would have been equally annoyed if they'd tried to imply that Harvey had been pining for Donna and had just decided to act on it. The fact is, I'm just not convinced by them as a romantic pairing anymore. And on top of that, Harvey was rude to Samantha! She was trying to share her feelings about Robert leaving, and Harvey just left! Ouch.
This show has positioned Donna as a strong female character, and has given her an arc about self-confidence and going after what she deserves for herself. That's a great concept for a character, but I find that often the show doesn't follow through on its promises with her characterization. This episode is a good example of that. The episode is called "Harvey," and that final scene between Harvey and Donna is supposed to be this big, exciting, culminating moment for the two of them. So... why did Donna get so little of the run time this week? As far as we could tell just last week, she had serious and genuine feelings for Thomas. Now, it seems that was a red herring. A way for her to lie to herself about her continued love for Harvey. And we only get a few little snippets with Donna to see that play out. She's not in the majority of the episode, so pretty much the whole emotional journey is Harvey's. That's fine, but it has the unfortunate consequence of sort of framing Donna like a prize to be won. The episode didn't take its time to convince me that Donna wanted this, and that Thomas wasn't that important to her.
Turning to other aspects of the plot - I found the flashbacks perfectly fine in and of themselves, but I don't really understand Robert's guilt over the death of a mugger acting as a catalyst for saving Harvey and getting disbarred. There have been plenty of other times over the course of this show where he could have sacrificed something because of a generally guilty conscience. Why was this particular situation the one that made him decide to act? The connection seemed quite flimsy to me.
Also, this was a finale, and Katrina wasn't in it at all! I call foul. I hope we get tons of time with her in the ninth and final season.
Pros:
Whew. Sorry I complained about the Darvey stuff for so long. I understand that there are a lot of people who are probably thrilled, and while it may sound like I'm contradicting myself, I do understand it on a certain level. I really don't give much of a crap about Donna and Harvey's romance, but I'd rather have them together than keep playing the juvenile will-they-won't-they game. If the writers are smart about this, we now have a whole season to build up their romance and make them a convincing couple. I do appreciate that.
There were aspects of this episode that I actually enjoyed quite a bit, peaking out from between all of the stuff that pissed me off. To start with, I found the flashbacks with Robert and Samantha pretty strong. I think their connection works to humanize Robert, and to bring Samantha into the world of the story with a little more strength. Her character still isn't super interesting to me, but I did find her compelling here. She was angry and scared, and Robert was there for her no matter what. It reminded me of the strength of the mentor/mentee relationship that has gotten so much emphasis on this show. Harvey and Jessica, Mike and Harvey, Samantha and Robert. There's something undeniably powerful about the strength of bonds that stretch past the professional.
There was one moment with Samantha that I particularly loved, and it actually felt like a good moment to encapsulate the appeal of this show as a whole. She's talking to Harvey about Donna - if Samantha's being honest and professional, Donna should be fired for breaking privilege with Thomas. But if she's speaking as Donna's friend, there's no way Samantha would even consider letting her go. She comments that the firm is rubbing off on her, and marvels at how crazy they all are. The point is, she knows that Harvey would never consider turning on Donna, and Samantha wouldn't want him to. They'd all throw themselves in front of a bus, commit career suicide, to protect one another. Mike did it for Harvey, Louis, and Jessica. Harvey tried to do it for Mike, then for Donna. Robert does it for Harvey. It's what they do. It's what makes them a family even when everything is at its absolute craziest and lowest point. And that's why these people are compelling to watch.
I really do like Alex quite a bit. He hasn't been given a ton to do, but his willingness to lie to protect Harvey this week was really touching, and I liked the moment afterwards when Harvey thanked him for it. There's a camaraderie there that I wish we could explore more. It's fun to see him as a team player in this way, instead of relegated to the subplot.
Daniel Hardman was kind of toothless in this episode. By that I mean, he was trying to disbar Harvey, but he didn't get a lot of screen-time to be his villainous self, and I oddly rather appreciated that. We don't need to spend a lot of time focusing on a character who's just returning for one episode. And actually, this episode did something to humanize Hardman. After all, he's sort of... right. I mean, Harvey is guilty of exactly what Hardman is accusing him of, and yet once again, this same group of people manages to pull the rug out from under him and ruin his chances of getting back on top. The stuff between Hardman and Zane was actually a little bit... touching? There's a moment when Robert is confessing to breaking privilege, and Hardman is just disbelieving, and he seems really hurt that Robert is directly involved like this. Hardman expected a dirty trick, but he didn't expect it to come from Robert, and you can tell that he's upset about it on a personal level. That oddly made me a bit emotional!
There was one Mike mention, and it was pretty great. (See, you can tell I'm not much of a Darvey fan when I end this particular review still talking about Mike). Hardman wants to know why Robert has thrown in his lot with Harvey and Louis, and wonders if it's "just because Rachel married Harvey's protege?" That basically implies that even Daniel Hardman knows the importance of Mike to Harvey, since he's comparing it to Robert's love for his own daughter. Or maybe I'm delusional. Don't take this away from me, it's all I have left!

Your Riddler Oracle Au (that you will never write) seriously sounds amazing. You could even add the tragedy kink in with Eddie becoming more and more enticed with the dark side (a 'personal trap' (description stolen from Norman Bates) because of his abusive upbringing) and both Batman and Foxy end up worrying about him as he slips more and more. Kinda like a telltale thing with John Doe, but dealing with Foxy way more, because of the years of love they had. Sorry, too much nerding of your au. 8P
(Au anon being overly annoying over here) it can even include Eddie becoming somewhat enamored with Ozzie, or the idea of Ozzie, similar to that Harley Quinn parallel post you put up earlier. Basically tempting that part of his mind to the dark side.
HI ANON I AM FINALLY REPLYING!
Firstly I just - god bless you for being so excited about my daydream ramblings
I ramble more OVER HERE with more AU thoughts/plotting that touches on Ed being tempted by darkness a little. Cos in my scenario I imagine him still trying/wanting to kill Tom Doughty - it’s just lucky that Foxy stops him in time. Plus I’d keep the whole bit with Eddie in Arkham torturing Bruce and Foxy, so he’d be tapping into his darker, slightly sadistic desires there (though in my scenario I picture him being influenced/brainwashed by Hugo into doing that - which, hi hi, has now been stolen as a plot by the show perhaps?? :p).
In the link above I stop my imagining at the end of S02, but listen... I HAVE SO MANY MORE FOXMA CANON-AU IDEAS, FOR REAL. IT KEEPS ME ENTERTAINED DURING BORING DAYS OKAY??
So, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, but you inspired me to write them down.
Please forgive me for the insanely extensive ramble!
So, as I hint in the link, I was thinking -
S03 Eddie as Chief of Staff to Ozzie plot al a canon
For purposes of ~drama I like to daydream that Eddie is on compulsory sick leave from the GCPD because whatever Hugo did to him at Arkham has been fucking him up a little - causing him to have violent episodes, hallucinations..... basically I guess the mental break that happened after he killed Tom in canon
Foxy has been the wonderful, caring, loving, supportive boyfriend we all know he would be and helping Ed as best he can through all this
Oh they are also totally living together now
But Ed is scared to talk to Foxy about all the dark impulses that Hugo’s tinkering has brought to light in him because Foxy is (so he thinks) all pure and stuff and Ed doesn’t want to burden him or risk scaring Foxy away
Plus Ed is going crazy not being able to work
So one day when he turns up at the GCPD trying to convince Jim to let him come back and is refused (politely and with sympathy) he just SNAPS and RAGE QUITS and stomps out... only to be found moping on the sidewalk a while later by Ozzie
Now Ozzie, like in canon, has grown rather fond of Ed due to Ed nursing him back to health after being shot by Galavan and ofc in this world from Eddie going to visit him in Arkham and then trying to save him from Hugo
So on learning that Ed has been, so Ozzie spins it, ‘fired’ for being ‘violent’ or whatever, Ozzie immediately offers Ed a job helping in his Mayoral campaign
Probably Ed and Ozzie end up having a little chat about violent impulses and the like too, because it’s easier to talk to an infamous violent criminal about such things than it is with a seemingly innocent, saintly boyfriend, causing Ed to immediately warm to the idea of working with Oswald and maybe by doing so being able to unburden himself of his troublesome thoughts/feelings and... maybe even find some possible outlets for them...? ie. being enticed towards darker acts like you suggest anon!
When Ed reveals this to Foxy though, Foxy is... NOT HAPPY with the idea of Ed working with a criminal like Ozzie. Partly because he does not approve of the idea of Oswald as a Mayor and partly because he fears it won’t be good for Ed’s mental health
Which leads to a HUGE FIGHT with Eddie claiming that Foxy is being unfair about Oswald and treating Ed like he’s a child who can’t make his own decisions and the more Foxy tries to explain that’s not true the worse it sounds and the madder Ed gets. Plus any defence of Ozzie is met with disdain by Foxy. Until eventually they build up to some kind of ultimatum where Foxy tells Ed that ofc he’s capable of making his own decisions, but if he agrees to work with Oswald then Foxy can’t in good conscious continue with their relationship!
So a furious Ed is just - FINE THEN! And packs up his stuff and leaves.
And you can tell that both of them regret this RIGHT AWAY - Ed hovering outside the door on the verge of returning, Foxy with his hand on the doorknob poised to go after Ed and apologise
But in a tragic twist of timing they fail to make up - just as Eddie is about to return some neighbours walk by and see him with his suitcase and he feels compelled to walk on, then just as he’s out of sight Foxy plucks up the courage to open the door only to find Ed gone, noooo
Leading to Eddie turning up at the Van Dahl mansion suitcase in hand (maybe wet too, let’s imagine it raining!) where he tells Ozzie - yes I’ll take the job, but, I also kinda need somewhere to stay...
This is where the nygmobblepot - enticement towards darkness part really comes in!
Ozzie welcomes Ed in with open arms ofc and his journey to becoming Mayor plays out pretty much as in canon, with Eddie doing his supportive stuff and dipping into ‘lightly’ criminal behaviour to do so
Ozzie completely falls for Ed along the way, makes him Chief of Staff etc.
Ed is maybe, slightly, starting to develop deeper feelings for Ozzie too... and maybe there’s a bit of a ‘rebound’ aspect to it, but maybe not... plus Ozzie HAS been constantly accepting of Ed’s ‘darkside’ without judgement, which endears him to Ed, as well as the opportunities Ozzie may have provided to allow Ed to indulge said darkness (letting Ed help with interrogations and the like)
(also a lot of the warmth we saw build between Ed and Ozzie in S02 would totally have happened here as well - so they’ve got that history)
Meanwhile Foxy has taken over Ed’s job at the GCPD and watches Ed’s advancement on the news with growing concern... but also a little pride? Because... Ed seems happy... and healthy... and... maybe Oswald isn’t doing a TERRIBLE job as Mayor? (since Foxy wouldn’t know about the ins and outs of Ozzie also running the criminal underworld and how ever more deeply involved Ed is becoming with that)
UNTIL
That fateful day Ozzie plucks up the courage to confess his feelings and Ed stops off at a liquor store to purchase a bottle of wine.......
Only ofc it’s not Isabella Ed runs into
So Ed finds Foxy while buying wine. They end up talking through the night. Both of them apologise for past behaviour. Foxy even reluctantly compliments Ozzie maybe. They both admit they miss each other. Feelings are rekindled. Kisses. They agree to try again.
Ed on learning the time, as in canon, rushes back to a frantic Ozzie and reveals that he and Foxy have decided to rekindle their romance and ISN’T IT GREAT?? :p
All the stuff about ‘second chances’ that Ed applied to Izzy in canon now fits rather nicely with him and Foxy :)
Ozzie’s jealousy progresses as in canon... to its inevitable conclusion (maybe there’s even a moment of crisis where Ed tries to break up with Foxy out of fear that he will hurt him, like he feared with Izzy, but Foxy also calms Ed’s fears... albeit without creepy cosplay... but maybe with rough sex though...? Foxy showing Ed that he’s not an innocent snowflake and can handle it if Ed needs to be a little dark...??)
OFC IN THIS SCENARIO OZZIE FAILS TO ACTUALLY KILL FOXY!
BUT - there’s a brief time where Foxy SEEMS to be dead (perhaps a mangled body was found in/by his crashed car that there is enough evidence to SUGGEST is Foxy for everyone to believe it... but actually it was a homeless man Foxy was giving a lift to a shelter or something... look you can’t expect me to think of ALL the details!)
AND OKAY HERE’S THE THING - while Ed thinks Foxy is dead, his whole development into The Riddler PLAYS OUT JUST AS IN CANON after Izzy died
So that’s - going through discovering Foxy was ‘murdered,’ blaming Butch, the whole bit with him and Tabby and the mini-guillotine, learning it was Ozzie who did it, teaming up with Babs etc against him, all the way to the docks and everything
Until we get lost and confused Ed post-Ozzie’s death going on his academic killing spree and sending riddles to the GCPD
Unhappily for Ed he only has poor Harvey to play with, since Jim is off doing important Court of Owls related plot business and Foxy is ofc unavailable
During it all Ed has some AMAZING hallucinations of BOTH OSWALD AND FOXY though... I confess I haven’t thought those through... but they DEFINITELY HAPPEN
How Harvey gets on with the chess and ‘belly of the beast’ stuff idk... maybe Lee helps... but somehow he muddles through to the finale with Eddie dangling him over the stairwell and asking his final three riddles
EXCEPT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME A WILD VERY MUCH ALIVE FOXY APPEARS AND BEGS ED TO STOP
Ofc Ed just thinks he’s hallucinating at first until Harvey exclaims his shock at Lucius being alive
Cue an intense, emotional conversation. Foxy, as in canon, twigs that Ed has killed Penguin. Ed counters, desperately - he killed you! Foxy is sympathetic. Loving. Reassuring Ed that he isn’t dead (he’s been in a coma listed as a John Doe or something, shhhh, details), that they can make this right
You can see Ed wants to believe this so badly... but he is torn... he’d built himself up into becoming a criminal, felt like fate had pushed him into it, he’d felt READY to be that man
How? he cries. How can we make this right? It’s not just Oswald. I’ve done things, killed people. I’ve killed people, Foxy, and I liked it!
It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, Foxy would insist. You’re still my Ed. My Riddler. Please, you don’t have to do this.
And Foxy would move closer, reaching out.
And Ed would be on the verge of taking Foxy’s hand.
...but that’s when the rope holding Harvey would snap.
And a pained Ed would shake his head and back away - I’m sorry. I’m sorry, it’s too late!
Leaving Foxy to catch a falling Harvey while Ed runs away
I’m sorry I know this is too long and ridiculous but it’s been on my mind for SO.LONG and I’ve got a whole Court of Owls bit as well
In an effort to slot this whole AU into the canon as much as I can I picture Ed going on to try and be a criminal like he does in the show - green suit, robbing three banks in one night and all that (but I’m vetoing the use of the name ‘Riddler’ at this point)
Meanwhile Foxy is, just, distraught back at the GCPD - INSISTING to Jim and everyone that Ed is not himself, that he needs help, that they need to find him, that if they just find him he can talk Ed down he promises
And Jim is sympathetic probably, reassuring Foxy that the GCPD is doing all they can, that they all care about Ed (which may or may not be stretching the truth some at this point) and will do their best to bring him in without hurting him (Kristen, who is still alive, is also on Ed’s side maybe?)
Then we’ve got Babs drawing Ed into the Court of Owls stuff
And Ed in this AU is... much more obviously conflicted about his current life choices and acting reckless/suicidal (because dramatic death seems like an easy way out of his current emotional struggles)
So, as in canon, he jumps at the chance to poke at a dangerous, secret organisation
The whole thing with the Mayor and Jim at the GCPD plays out and Jim lets the Court capture Ed (which Foxy is PISSED to learn about after the fact because W.T.F Jim you promised you would bring him in safe! why didn’t you tell me? I could have talked him out of it if I’d been there!)
Cue Ed discovering Ozzie is alive and the two of them teaming up to bust out together
Cut to Foxy returning to the GCPD late at night - he’s forgotten a file he needs, he’s been very distracted lately
Only when he enters the building he finds - ED, in full ‘not-Riddler’ outfit, sitting at one of the desks
Foxy assumes Ed has come to see him, but what he doesn’t notice is that Ed is as surprised to see him as Foxy is to find him
But before they can have a real conversation - Jim arrives
And Foxy, like, PANICS and jumps in front of Jim, yelling at Ed to run, to just go, he’ll stop Jim, Ed just needs to get out before he’s caught (Foxy has grown less enamoured of the plan to have the GCPD catch Ed since Jim let the Court take him)
Except Ed just puts a quiet hand on Foxy’s shoulder and tells Foxy he’s sweet... but actually it’s Jim he’s come to see, dun dun!
TWIST - it turns out that Ed has been WORKING WITH/FOR JIM ever since Babs approached him about the Court
Eddie had found Jim and offered to become a spy on the Court if Jim promised to clear his criminal record in return
Meaning the whole ‘letting Ed be captured by the Court’ was really a ruse Jim and Ed had concocted together to get Ed inside the Court
Brief comedy moment where Jim is all - nice to see where your priorities lie though, Lucius - about Foxy trying to help Ed escape justice :p
Foxy is all - ?????? about all this ofc. But focuses on how dangerous it was for Ed to let himself be captured by the Court
Ed just shrugs off his possible death - it’s the only way he could see to untangle himself from the criminal he’d become, to stand any chance of him and Foxy getting back to how they were
There’s a quick debrief with Jim - unfortunately Ed learnt little, only that Ozzie is still alive (which Jim already knew at this point) and that the Court are planning something big
Foxy wants to take Ed home at this point - end the whole thing. But Ed thinks he should go back to Babs etc - that he might be able to learn more while still a criminal
(also secretly Ed is still reeling over Ozzie not being dead and there is a dark part of him that very much wants to try and kill Ozzie again)
Then we have Jervis and his blood being needed to cure the virus the Court unleashes
In canon Ed helps Babs take Jervis from Jim, then Jim bargains with Ed, offering him Ozzie to get him to hand Jervis over....
I’m fuzzy on how this would work in the AU... maybe Ed actually helps figure out that Jervis’ blood is key to the cure?
...I think...he would have to NOT be involved in Babs kidnapping Jervis, because he’d WANT Jim, Foxy etc to get Jervis’ blood, WANT to help cure the virus
But Babs ends up with Jervis anyways
So in this scenario Ed calls Jim to let him know he can get him Jervis..... BUT.... in the meantime Ed has discovered Jim has Ozzie and his dark impulses get the better of him - he refuses to hand Jervis over unless Jim delivers Ozzie
He tried to kill the man I love, Jim, Ed insists.
So Jim, making very sure not to tell Foxy, agrees
We get the warehouse scene (...maybe without the hand grenade around Jervis... maybe not :p)
Followed by Ozzie knocking Ed out, the car, Ed seemingly escaping...
...and on to the second docks scene
EXCEPT EXCEPT EXCEPT
When it comes to the pivotal moment when Ed has the chance to shoot Ozzie again and get it right this time...
...HE DOESN’T
He thinks of Foxy and of the better man Foxy sees in him and realises that’s the man he wants to be
I can’t, he says. If I do this, Lucius and I are over. I can’t be this man and still be with him.
He gives Ozzie back the gun
Ozzie gives him a curious look
You really love him, don’t you?
Ed nods
Ozzie nods back, understanding. Then lifts the gun and pulls the trigger
It’s unloaded ofc - and Ozzie explains about taking out the bullets, nods to where Freeze and Ivy are appearing behind Eddie
Ed asks if Ozzie is going to kill him and Ozzie says he considered it, that he considered worse - it all depended on what Ed chose to do
But since Ed chose to spare him, Ozzie spares Ed as well and tells him to go back to the man he loves - something sappy about life only giving you one true love and Ed is lucky to have found his
Maybe Ed looks at Ozzie thoughtfully (slightly longingly?) for a moment and says something about - maybe, in another lifetime...
Cut to Foxy returning home after... helping with the virus cure... whatever he was doing at the end of S03!
Ed is waiting for him inside. In the dark, so Foxy is surprised by him when he turns on the light. Because Ed is embracing his Extraness now :p
INTENSE EMOTIONAL CONVERSATION
Foxy has discovered that Ed asked for Oswald and Jim gave him up and confronts Ed about it
Ed says he took Oswald to the docks to shoot him... but like, leaves it a little unclear for a bit what actually happened because he wants to know how Foxy would react to him having killed Ozzie, for real this time
And here’s my kicker - Foxy disapproves... but he accepts it. Is willing to still be with Ed, even knowing Ed has committed premeditated murder in what is arguably sound mind (his killing spree after Foxy’s ‘death’ being something Foxy has been justifying as a result of mental illness)
Which is, ofc, a hell of an emotional boost to Ed!
Cue angry, relieved punching when Ed reveals the truth
...some stuff with Ed insisting that he’s different now - they can’t go back to how they were, there’s a ‘darkness’ in him and that’s not going to change
Foxy telling him he understands.
Something like - this is Gotham, living here, you need some darkness in you or you won’t survive...
....some kind of fancy wordplay anyways that shows that Foxy can handle darkness and isn’t exactly all light himself
Which leads to kinky sex
THE END
only not ofc :p
because you have all of S04...
I don’t have a full plot for that, but I imagine Ed getting involved with Ozzie’s battle with Sofia somehow, because Ed withstanding torture for Ozzie and Ozzie giving up his revenge for Ed is just.... TOO GOOD and I need it to exist in this AU as well...
I have out of context ideas about Ed helping with Martin as well still, and he, Foxy AND OSWALD end up all living together with Martin for a bit (or at least Martin lives with Ed and Foxy and Ozzie comes to visit)
...which ties in to my secret Endgame Scenario where, in the midst of proper Batman times, Ozzie EVENTUALLY (after lots of criminal shenanigans) ends up going (mostly) legit and he, Eddie and Foxy develop a working poly relationship... but that’s in the far future :p
(also I’ve got a whole ~THING where Eddie finds out Foxy works for Batman - cos it’s not Foxy’s secret to tell, right? so I figure he would feel honour bound to keep the fact Bruce is Batman even from his boyfriend... only Eddie is not dumb and notices Foxy working later than he should and maybe Foxy’s excuses don’t hold up and whatnot and long story short Eddie becomes, reluctantly, convinced that FOXY MUST BE HAVING AN AFFAIR, even though it doesn’t fit his character AT ALL and by all accounts shouldn’t make sense... so anyway, yeah, he confronts Foxy, and Foxy CAN’T tell him the truth, so with Foxy refusing to explain himself Eddie is forced to conclude that his suspicions must be correct and it’s all just awkward and upsetting...
...only obviously Ed finds out the truth soon after - I keep picturing a scene where he comes upon Barbara Gordon at the GCPD (which Eddie goes back to work at fyi - teaming up with Foxy there for a bit till Foxy goes back to Wayne Enterprises). He finds her trying to hack into Batman’s radio, because she’s a fan. And because Eddie needs a distraction from his homelife (and is also a fan) he helps her and they succeed, only to listen in to Batman having a conversation WITH FOXY, leaving Ed all - ??????!
and ofc he hijacks the line and is all - FOXY THE FUCK?!
...followed by a shocked (slightly awed) - FOXY OMG ARE YOU HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH BATMAN??
to which Bruce and Lucius are both - aaaaah! wow, omg, fucking NO!
...and yeah, that’s how Ed finds out his boyfriend works for the Bat and ultimately leads to him (and Barbara) joining the team :p)
Soooo... yes... there we go. A more detailed look into my ‘Ed and Foxy were friends at uni’ foxma AU version of Gotham/Batman, including Eddie having an ongoing, complicated relationship with Oswald which involves him constantly struggling with his darker impulses and being tempted to... less than lawful/ethical/moral behaviour.
(I feel like maybe sometimes as well, when Eddie is working alongside the Bat Fam, he maybe... quietly orchestrates things so certainly particularly vile villains end up, um, ‘unalive’ ...but in ways that aren’t obviously deliberate... or maybe even occasionally, secretly teams up with Ozzie to help bump off various people...
oh shit and yeah that’s the other thing - in this AU, when Eddie becomes Oracle!Riddler... mostly I just take it as read that Ozzie 100% knows it’s him from the get go... but he just... never says anything... and even though he knows that technically he could probably go after Eddie and try and torture the identity of Batman out of him, Ozzie just... doesn’t... because - love, you know? ;p)
God this is way too long, I’m so very sorry...

It’s Not a Date
TITLE: It’s Not A Date
PAIRING: Bruce Wayne/Harvey Dent
WORD COUNT: 1140
WARNINGS / NOTES: Originally written as a Valentine’s Day fic. There’s some mental illness mention, but I really don’t think there’s anything that should be of any concern.
AO3 / QUOTEV
The watch on his wrist read 6:59 as clear as day.
Harvey said he should be finished with today’s load of work by seven o’clock, though his habit of bringing his work home with him made Bruce wonder if he’d make it to the Manor on time. He checked his watch again. It seemed all too rare that they were able to get together and spend an evening together without their lines of work getting in the way. Upholding justice wasn’t particularly a nine-to-five. These worries were dispelled by the reverberation of a short series of knocks on the main door throughout the halls.
“Would you like me to get that, Master Wayne?” Alfred offered, and Bruce waved off the request as he got up to let his friend inside. For whatever reason, he felt as if it would be impersonal to not greet Harvey at the door himself. They were— no, they are— friends, after all.
Outside, Harvey plunged his hands into the pockets of his windbreaker and exhaled sharply. He forgot how massive this place was, looming tall as the only building for some time. It didn’t intimidate him, nor did it cause him to think any differently of Bruce. Unlike many, he didn’t enjoy materialistically based friendships used to further the gain of the less privileged half; Harvey didn’t, at least— he couldn’t speak for Two-Face.
When Bruce opened the door and Harvey entered, they of course exchanged pleasantries, yet their banter felt very forced. The air hung with a tension that bordered fear. It wasn’t that either was afraid of the other, as many may have been of having an intimate evening with ex-rogue Two-Face, so much as that they were afraid that their friendship had changed. It had been so long since they last had just relaxed together. People change, as do feelings, and change is a terrifying thing to face. What if things weren’t as they were? They didn’t mention it.
Their evening together was started by dinner in a small dining area in the kitchen; dates in the past had shown Bruce that sitting in the dining hall usually impeded communication, not that this was a date. It was not a date, simply dinner and a movie to catch up on things with his best friend.
The food was good enough: steak, corn, and mashed potatoes. Alfred was an excellent cook. The tension of earlier seemed to melt away as the conversation shifted from business to personal life. Things seemed almost normal again. Almost.
“How are things with, you know–”
Harvey took a long drink of wine. “Him? When he’s in control now– which’s been a lot rarer– he isn’t… violent, or isn’t as violent. So good. We’re good.”
“Good.” Bruce shifted the topic quickly. He didn’t want to linger on such a sensitive subject, and didn’t want to pry. “So, have you met any special ladies lately?”
“Hah! Have you seen me?” He gestured at his face, though he sounded as if he were mostly joking. But every joke was rooted in a little truth, right? Often, he wore a half-mask to cover his scars. Harvey didn’t want his appearance to factor into how people automatically perceived him, even if it made him give off a phantom-of-the-opera vibe and was more than a little stuffy at times. Here with Bruce, he felt comfortable enough to not need to do so.
“Harv!”
“Besides, who says I’m just looking for women? They didn’t call me Mr. Dual for just being a hit with the ladies, y’know.”
“Harvey!”
After dinner, they settled into the movie room. Harvey insisted the room was a home theatre. What else do you call a room with a U-couch, huge television, and surround sound that was dedicated exclusively to watching movies and television? Bruce told him that was ridiculous.
“If I wanted to have a home theatre, I’d put in an actual big screen and replace the couch with rows of chairs. Much less comfortable,” He joked.
Harvey picked the movie: Hot Fuzz. It had been one of his favorite movies for quite some time, even before the accident. He and Two-Face didn’t argue about it, and that said a lot. What was there to argue about? One wants comedy, the other wants action. The movie was both. Nicholas Angel was his favorite character, as they shared the same black-and-white worldview. Otherwise, the action was great and he enjoyed the sub-plot with Danny and Nic.
“Blanket?” Bruce offers, sliding along the lengthy sofa. It was rather chilly in the room, and neither were particularly dressed for warmth. (Bruce was in a tee shirt and sweatpants, while Harvey was in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, his obnoxiously colored windbreaker having been left near the door.) Harvey, engrossed in the movie, just nodded in response. They had to sit closer together to share the blanket, and almost instinctively, Bruce wrapped an arm around Harvey.
“Bruce?” Harv spoke, still entranced by the actions on screen.
“Hm?”
“You have your arm around me.” He didn’t sound upset by it, stating the fact with little to no emotion in his voice.
“Is… that an issue?” Bruce suddenly felt incredibly self-conscious of his actions, drawing his arm back. He should have at least asked if that were okay. What if he’d made Harvey uncomfortable? Friends didn’t typically cuddle on the couch while watching action-comedy-romance movies, after all.
Harvey took time deliberating a response, leaning back against the couch and looking away from the screen to meet Bruce’s eyes with a placid smile. “Nope.” He leaned over some, resting the scarred side of his face on his friend’s shoulder as Bruce returned his arm to its initial position slowly. The rest of the movie was in relative silence, as they just enjoyed it and the close proximity to one another.
By the time it was over, it was late, probably midnight. Harvey yawned against his friend’s shoulder, and the movement made Bruce shift a little. Though the movie wasn’t boring, the time of night was wholly responsible for making him so drowsy. Oddly, Bruce wasn’t the least bit tired.
With another yawn, Harv mumbled something about not knowing if he could drive home without falling asleep behind the wheel, and Bruce offered for him to stay the night. With enough empty rooms to house a small army, it wouldn’t be an issue, and so Alfred was summoned to prepare a room for him.
“Aren’ you gonna go to bed too?” Harvey sleepily asked.
Bruce sighed, smiled wryly, and answered cryptically, “No, there’re a few things I need to do tonight.”
“Do you ever sleep?”
“No.”
Harv shrugs before following Alfred off to the prepared guest room. “Well that much about you hasn’t changed.”
Even if so much had changed, perhaps change could be a good thing.

The Best Films of 2017
By Zeke Trautenberg
During this tumultuous year, the movie theater was a site of refuge, introspection, and conflict. The year began with Donald Trump’s travel ban, an executive order which represented a challenge to openness and freedom of exchange. In response, the filmmakers nominated for the Best Foreign-language Film at the Academy Awards released a defiant statement, in which they extolled film as a cosmopolitan remedy to the politics of nativism: “So we’ve asked ourselves: What can cinema do? Although we don’t want to overestimate the power of movies, we do believe that no other medium can offer such deep insight into other people’s circumstances and transform feelings of unfamiliarity into curiosity, empathy and compassion – even for those we have been told are our enemies.”
The second half of 2017 was no less tumultuous. The revelations of dozens of allegations against Harvey Weinstein, first revealed in The New York Times and The New Yorker, ushered in the most significant reshaping of the power dynamics of Hollywood in the industry’s history. Rose McGowan, Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, Salma Hayek, and the hundreds of other brave women and men who have come forward with their stories of abuse at the hands of Weinstein and other men in Hollywood have brought about a sea change in the culture at large. Ultimately, reforming the film industry’s toxic workplace cultures and practices, will require fixing the longstanding discrimination against and lack of opportunities for women and minorities in Hollywood.
Amid the charged partisan atmosphere of the country and the fallout from the Weinstein scandal, the film industry continues to adapt to an increasingly digital world. The proposed merger of Disney and Fox is a response to the growing clout, budget, and subscriber base of Netflix. This mega merger may well as a sign of things to come as studios consolidate to stave off competition from Amazon, Apple, and Netflix.
The list that follows is the product of my year at the cinema (and in front of my TV). I did not have the chance to see every one of the acclaimed or terrible films (here’s looking at you Geostorm) released in American cinemas this year, but all the movies listed here are worthy of your time.
10. Endless Poetry
Director: Alejandro Jodorowsky
Tumblr media
Throughout his peripatetic career, Jodorowsky has returned time and again to his favorite subject: himself. Endless Poetry is a filmic memoir, which unfolds in nineteen-fifties Santiago, as a young Jodorowsky (played by the filmmaker’s son, Adán) comes of age as a poet. As occurs in The Dance of Reality (2013)—which is based on Jodorowsky’s youth in a small town in northern Chile—, Endless Poetry features repeat, direct interventions by Jodorowsky himself. In Endless Poetry Jodorowsky conjures imaginative sequences, production design, and characters amid his oppressive home life. One memorable sequence depicts the bedroom walls of fellow poet Enrique Lihn’s bedroom covered from floor to ceiling in scribbling. This three-dimensional page serves as a mirror to the film itself, in which present, past, and future intersect.
9. Ladybird
Director: Greta Gerwig
Tumblr media
Greta Gerwig’s first film is a coming-of-age story about a young woman in Sacramento in the early 2000s. The film follows Lady Bird (Saroise Ronan) during her senior year at Catholic school as she takes up theater, loses her virginity, and goes to prom. The film is laugh-out-loud funny and features a stellar cast, which includes Laurie Metcalf, Beanie Feldstein, and Tracy Letts. In addition to portraying the pratfalls of young adulthood, the film depicts the frustrated pursuit of respectability and economic insecurity among middle-class Americans in the years leading up to the Great Recession.
8. I Am Not Your Negro
Director: Raoul Peck
Tumblr media
Raoul Peck’s documentary is based on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember This House about the civil rights leaders Medgar Evars, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Like Now (1965), another film about race in America by a director from the Caribbean, Peck’s film is a confrontational call to action. Peck juxtaposes the Black Lives Matter movement and police violence against African Americans with Baldwin’s searing analysis of race in twentieth-century America. The film underscores the connections these two periods by bookending the film with images of recent protests against police brutality, but leaves viewers to draw their own conclusions about where the Civil Rights Movement and Black Lives Matter intersect. In his voice-over narration, Samuel L. Jackson channels the author’s stoicism and resolve and delivers one of the most potent performances of his career.
7. Icarus
Director: Bryan Fogel
Tumblr media
There is always a certain lack of control in documentary filmmaking. The limited control filmmakers have over the ways their narrative unfolds is part of what distinguishes documentaries from fiction films. Bryan Fogel’s Icarus is a wonderful example of the ways in which documentary filmmaking is an adaptive art form. What begins as a story about an amateur cyclist who subjects himself to a rigorous doping regimen, transforms mid-way into a geopolitical thriller about a Russian sports scientist at the heart of one of the biggest scandal of modern sports: the systematic, state-sponsored doping of Russian athletes across decades. The scientist in question, Grigory Rodchenkov, is the kind of colorful character— his wardrobe includes bright orange shorts—that documentary filmmakers dream of. As the danger for Rodchenkov increases, Fogel grapples with how to intervene and tell a story that is no longer his own.
6. After the Storm
Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda
Tumblr media
After the Storm tells the story of Ryota (Hiroshi Abe), a divorced father and novelist as he grapples with how to be a father after his recent divorce. Ryota works as a private detective, while struggling to write a second novel. However, instead of paying his alimony, the gumshoe spends his salary on his gambling habit. Abe communicates the protagonist’s sense of perpetual exhaustion and weariness with his slouched shoulders and hangdog expression. Ryota loves his son, but struggles to be a good father. The distance between father and son is exemplified by a memorable scene in which the author and detective watches his child play baseball with binoculars while sitting in his car. The film climaxes during a nocturnal summer storm which traps Ryota, his ex-wife, and son in the same apartment. As the rain falls, the fractured family renews the terms of their relationship and Ryota forges a closer bond with his son by sharing memories of his own childhood.
5. Call Me By Your Name
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Tumblr media
Luca Gaudagnino is a master of the contemporary melodrama. His previous films I Am Love (2009) and A Bigger Splash (2015) unfold in settings heavy with symbolism—an old house, an island in the Mediterranean—and Call Me By Your Name is no exception. Guadagnino transforms a villa in Northern Italy into the site of first romance for Elio (Timothée Chalamet). The arrival of the handsome Oliver (Armie Hammer), who is there to assist Elio’s father with archaeological research, elicits a potent mixture of self-doubt, shame, and desire from the cosmopolitan teenager. Although the film depicts Elio’s emotional turmoil with an earnestness that may grate on some, its emphasis on naked feeling and passion is all part of its bittersweet fun. And if you need one reason to see Call Me By Your Name, stay for Michael Stuhlbarg’s monologue on life, love, and the loss, which is the single most memorable scene of the year.
4. Frantz
Director: François Ozon
Tumblr media
François Ozon’s Frantz follows Adrien (Pierre Niney) and Anna (Paula Beer), two characters who are bound together by the same man, the recently deceased Frantz. Set in the aftermath of World War I, the film is an allegory of Franco-German relations, but also an exploration of guilt and the horrors of war. Shoot in gorgeous black and white, the film’s visuals are a departure for Ozon, who uses color to great effect in Potiche (2010) and The New Girlfriend (2014). Like these earlier films, Frantz features magnificent costumes (designed by Pascaline Chavanne), and a healthy dose of melodrama. And, as in In the House (2012), Frantz revels in the slippery nature of fiction. Ozon challenges viewers to discern the reason for Frantz’s visit to Germany and the meaning of the sentimental stories the interloper tells Anna’s grieving family.
3. The Shape of Water
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Tumblr media
The Shape of Water had been swimming around in Guillermo Del Toro’s head for years, before he got the idea that made it all click: the story had to pass “through the service entrance.” Set in the 1960s, the film follows the mute Elisa (Sally Hawkins) works as a janitor at a top-secret research facility—a recurring setting in Del Toro’s films—where scientists study a creature they captured from a river in the Amazon. Elisa falls in love with the creature, who like her cannot speak. Together with her gay artist neighbor (Richard Jenkins) and black co-worker (Octavia Spencer), Elisa sets out to free the creature from the lab and its vicious director of security (Michael Shannon). The film is an allegory of being different in a world built on the principles of order and knowing your place. Working with a budget of under twenty million dollars, Del Toro makes a film that looks many times more expensive. The production design incorporates art deco and modernism, with acute attention to detail. The special effects are also remarkable. For the underwater scenes, Del Toro used the dry-for-wet method, which involves suspending the actors and props on wires, pumping in smoke, using fans to create the illusion of movement, utilizing light caustics (projecting images of light in water), and shooting it all in slow motion.
2. Get Out
Director: Jordan Peele
Tumblr media
A horror film and social satire, Get Out is an incisive depiction of race and racism in early-twenty-first century America. The film follows Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose (Allison Williams) as they embark on a weekend visit to Rose’s parents. As Chris and viewers see more of this WASPy household, which is seemingly haunted by a silent black maid and gardener, the manicured lawn and colonial style house transform into a nightmarish prison. The hypnosis sessions with Rose’s mother (Catherine Keener), in which Chris travels to the “sunken place,” is a frightening and vivid metaphor for black experience in America. The allegorical qualities of the film are enhanced by its pitch-perfect incorporation of the horror genre, from the eerie drive through the woods to the hidden laboratory in the basement.
1. Wormwood
Director: Errol Morris
Tumblr media
The genre and medium-bending Wormwood is a film of the streaming age. This documentary-cum-series with a running-time of four hours was produced and released by Netflix in six parts and released in a limited run as a stand-alone film. Wormwood centers on the death of Frank Olson (played by Peter Sarsgaard in the fictional scenes), an Army doctor who died after falling to his death from his New York City hotel room in 1953. Errol Morris interviews Olson’s son, Eric who has dedicated much of his life to finding out what happened to his father. The Cold War, biological weapons, Hamlet, the Book of Revelation, and the misdeeds of the CIA intersect in this Russian Doll of a film. Morris offers a masterclass in the juxtaposition of sound and images, the use of split screen (the scenes with Eric Olson were shot with ten cameras), and, as A.O. Scott puts it, dogged cinematic sleuthing. The film’s use of fictional sequences alongside the talking head interviews and archival footage that are standards of the documentary genre, add depth to a film about the nature of truth and the pain of the search for truth. Towards the end of Wormwood, the investigative reporter Seymour Hersh tells Morris: “But don’t you know how wonderful it is not to have an ending?” In lieu of offering closure to the story of Frank Olson, Wormwood douses the viewer in a bitterness for which there is no salve.

AAU
{Here’s the next section of that original story. Still currently, and creatively called, Hospital Romance Drama. As always, I’m neither a doctor, nor British.  I’m just a girl who fancies herself a writer and likes slow burns, smart women, and tall men.}
Technically speaking she didn’t have to be on the Acute Admissions Ward unless someone asked for her specifically. They employed registrars and foundation doctors, students and nurses to do the admitting and diagnosing. There was even a full-time consultant to run the whole show. The problem was, that the full time consultant was Gareth Morris, who since the opening of a private care center in the hospital, seemed to spend more and more until it was most of his time there with those patients and their checkbooks rather than providing some sort of leadership on his ward. Occasionally, when she had an idle and cynical moment, she wondered if it was an American thing. America, with its broken, private health system, if every doctor born across the pond treated the profession as a revenue stream rather than a noble vocation. But that hadn’t been the experience she remembered from Stanford during her time there. Her mentor there had been a teddy bear of a man, nothing like the task master that trained her and the sharpness of the program that shaped her. And yet, as teddy as he was, he could also be a bear. He'd roared and growled and nearly disemboweled a junior doctor for putting profit before people in his surgery.
And then there was Gareth Morris.
It wasn’t that Gareth wasn’t amiable. He was. He had an easy laugh and a winning smile. When he found out she’d studied at Stanford he’d declared her an honorary Californian and drug her out to go watch baseball at odd hours of the night. American football as well. The Giants and the 49ers. They were both Giants and 49ers fans, and they’d drink Budweiser and laugh. He was utterly charming. He was also utterly venal. A good enough general surgeon, if you could get his attention. Unfortunately, AAU rarely did. So, she popped round when she had a spare moment. The registrars she could trust to diagnose on their own, but she didn’t trust them to teach diagnosis. And there were a slew of F1s on AAU. Marcus was fairly good about calling her down to double check any CT cases, but she liked to be around, just in case.
Acute Admissions, even on a slow day, operated on a level of chaotic that took her breath away. She knew she was going soft, but the pace was something she couldn’t do full time. Maybe once, but not anymore. Every bed was full and it was loud. Harvey was never as loud as AAU seemed to always be.
“Listen to me, I’m tellin’ ya, I can’t see! I can’t see anything!” Across the way the patient thrashed, panic in his thick Scots accent. He was a large man, a footballer by his build and his Aberdeen F.C. jersey. The flail of his arm nearly put poor Jenny Yoon on her ass.
“Excuse me, please.” Magnusson was quicker on the jump than she was, pushing past an orderly to help the young Foundation doctor wrestle the man onto the bed and get the nasal cannula in place.
“Oh, Thank – Mr. Magnusson.” Jenny squeaked, even at a distance Sofia Grace could tell her eyes were like saucers. Magnusson had never been on the ward at the same time she had. She’d never seen him with a patient before, other than the one he tried to poach from her. It would be interesting to see him in a diagnostic setting, as well as to observe him firsthand interact with the junior staff. As far as she knew he’d not made anyone else cry recently, but given Jenny’s expression, his head count may yet increase.
“And you are?” He fixed her with a hard stare, still holding the patient down until he was confident the man would stop squirming and swinging.
“Dr. Yoon.”
“And I can’t see!” The man wailed from his bed, he’d stopped struggling, for the most part.
“What is wrong with the patient?” Jenny absolutely looked like she might cry.
“I don’t know.” She replied honestly. ‘Was ist deine diagnose?’ ‘Keine Ahnung.’ Sofia Grace was in that moment with her, back in her own early days. Clueless and pressed for answers.
“Why can’t I see?!” The patient was certainly willing to offer his own summary of the problem, though a diagnosis eluded him as well.
“Yes you do,” He directed at Jenny, warmly. For her part Dr. Yoon stared at him blankly, still partially holding the man down as if she feared he’d start failing again. “Nurse,” Magnusson turned to the nearest nurse, his long hand diving into his front pocket. “I assume there’s a vending machine around here, two chocolate bars, nothing with nuts, and I’d like the change back please.” He dropped a handful of coins into the nurse’s confused hands. “How long as he been here?” His attention returned to Jenny as the nurse headed for the vending machines.
“Why aren’t you listening to me? I’m telling you I can’t see!”
“As you’ve been bellowing. Now do keep quiet so we can actually diagnose you.” Magnusson snapped. He had a point, even if he didn’t have much of a bedside manner. “Thank you!”
“About seven, eight minutes ago.”
“Before his fit he was slurring aggressive confused you assumed he was drunk.”
“I can’t see anything.” The patient had not shut up but was softer in their mournful wailing.
“Yes. No… I’m sorry?” Jenny still wasn’t understanding what he was getting at. Sofia Grace fixed Magnusson with a hard stare. Surely this was when the yelling started. Or the passive aggressive heavy sigh. The devastating comments and condescension.
“TP.” Was all he said as he continued to wrestle the man into the pulse oximetry and the other nursing duties. Magnusson was far from a stout man, but he apparently had wiry strength – or the poor patient was too distracted and distraught to put up much of a fight.
“What?”
“His blindness. Todd’s paresis which makes his seizure therefore-”
“Tonic-Colonic.” Jenny had finally caught on.
“You see that wasn’t so hard,” He praised. “Hypoglycemia - his blood sugar is through the floor.” Jenny had figured out what was wrong with her patient, but was now looking even more flustered, almost ill.
“Oh, but yesterday I sent him home! I assumed he was a junkie or drunk or something.”
“Everyone’s done it once, nobody does it again. What’s his name?” She’d expected one of two things in response – and neither of them was the response he gave. She had perhaps expected him to yell, reduce the young doctor to tears for such a failure. Or, perhaps he would mock and boast – ‘everyone’s done it but me of course’. Instead he was sympathetic, and honest. Everyone makes at least one utterly stupid mistake in their first year. She, herself, had been so flustered by a patient from Niger who spoke neither English nor German that she completely forgot all about the history of colonialism, African geography and geopolitics and started looking for a translator who could speak Kanuri or Yedina rather than French. She’d been so utterly mortified when Dr. Hahnemann was able to strike up an easy conversation with the woman in French that she spent the next semester trying to learn at least some French so that would never happen again. In the end all she really got out of the class were two sentences - Je compris seulement la garre – I only understand train station, which was a German idiom and utterly incomprehensible in French and Je m'appelle Hale, je ne parle pas français, mais je trouverai quelqu'un qui le pourra – My name is Hale, I do not speak French but I will find someone who can.
“Sit up Ross,” Magnusson’s voice broke through her own worst memories, “time for breakfast.” The patient, Ross, did neither. After being forced into the bed he seemed uninterested in changing tack. “Sit up.” He said again, with more force. “Now eat this, eat it.” Ross did so, slowly, “We don’t want you slipping into a coma and Dr. Yoon here slipping into an existential crisis. Normal eyesight will resume shortly.” And with that he left in a whirl of a crisp cut suit and confusion as neither Jenny nor Sofia Grace knew exactly what to make of the interaction.
AAU was a mess. An utter shamble. It was not necessarily that way because it was simply full, rather what made it a travesty was its lack of leadership. A full ward could still operate effectively, if it had proper leadership. The Acute Admissions Unit had no center, registrars and foundation doctors were pulled this way and that, putting out fires as they arose rather than attending patients with any sense of order, let alone in a way that would actually capitalize upon their skill sets. CT registrars diagnosing GS cases and vice versa because while they lacked clear leadership, they were all guided by the imperative ‘heal the sick’.
And in the middle of the fray was Ms. Hale. She was in conversation with Oliver Anderson, talking with her hands, as was her want. Of course, where there was chaos so too was there Sofia Grace Hale.
“It’s Ms. Hill,” Nurse Allie Waters was an interesting woman. She had started as a temp a few weeks ago and solidified that position into something permanent, dare say indispensable. She had good instincts, better bedside manner and patient rapport, and when she wanted to be, she could be fierce. As she was now, prying Dr. Anderson’s attention away from flirting. Nurse Waters, of course, did all of this while wearing the most ridiculous, sparkly headband regulations allowed and bubblegum pink lipstick. “You said you’d take a look?”
At Nurse Waters’ words Ms. Hale snapped to attention, eyes focusing in on the chart in her hand, as if she wanted to snap it up and read it herself. It was clear that she resisted the urge, but only just. Anderson was actually a member of AAU and as a Foundation doctor should be practicing his diagnostic and clinical skills.
“Yeah, go on then.” Anderson was more laid back in his response. He was clearly still too distracted by the number of buttons undone on Ms. Hale’s chambray blouse (two, giving a tantalizing view, her scar was the most faded at the top, blending into her ample cleavage, not that he would ever admit to checking) to pay attention to his job.
“She’s not doing very well. Her BP is very low.”
“Well,” Anderson said with cocky confidence, “let’s increase her fluids and up her obs to every fifteen minutes.” This time Ms. Hale really did grab the pale blue folder from Miss Waters.
“Which patient is this?”
“Bed three.” Ms. Hale turned, and Anderson was only able to follow in her wake.
“Hi, I’m Ms. Hale. Mind if I take a look at you?” She unwound the stethoscope from her neck as the patient consented. It was as she bent to listen to the woman’s chest that he noticed her stockings. The black seam running straight up the back of her shapely legs, the sight of which momentarily sent all blood down from his brain. Stockings were his weakness.
“Thank you.” She straightened up and Felix forced himself to focus. She was a professional, goddamnit. He was a professional, and now he was behaving no better than that damnable junior doctor. Ms. Hale motioned to that same junior doctor, as well as Nurse Waters and stepped away from the patient’s bed. Her voice was slightly softer than before, much sharper, and clearly outlined by her cayenne lips, which were decidedly not smiling.
“She’s developing cardiac failure, there’s already fluid building on the lungs. More fluids might have proved a little, hmmmm, risky?!” Dr. Anderson, at the very least, had the decency to look embarrassed.
“I’m sorry, I just haven’t had time to look at her.” Ms. Hale crossed her arms under her chest, the arch of her brow daring him to peak.
“Really,” She deadpanned. “No matter how tempting it may be you cannot just react to the symptoms, you have to react to the patient. You have to see the patient. Ms. Hill here needs cardiac enzymes, she needs careful fluid management,” Miss Waters took her cue and headed back to the bedside to implement the change. “Arrange a transfer to Harvey and notify Paul.”
“Yes, of course.”
Ms. Hale ran a hand through her curls as Dr. Anderson left her and exhaled a centering breath.
“Where the hell is Morris?!” As if on cue the ward doors swung open and Gareth Morris appeared, freshly pressed and flashing a million dollar, if apologetic smile. Felix was standing nearer to the door and his legs are infinitely longer than Ms. Hale’s and yet the petite consultant reaches the other surgeon first. Her heels clicking across the tiles.
“Gareth, what the fuck.” She hisses at the man, for once her dark eyes spit fire at someone else.
“Sorry, sorry. I’ve been back and forth all day.”
“More forth than back, perhaps.” Magnusson stepped to Ms. Hale’s side, she spared him half a look.
“Gareth, AAU has been slammed all day. Beds are full. Registrars are good enough clinicians, but you just leave them without some semblance of direction and even the most proficient wind up running around.” Morris had the decency to look somewhat ashamed, although his posture was also ridged and defensive.
“Everything was under control when I went up to check on my other patients. I can’t help if others can’t handle the heat. And you were down here, you’re always down here. Magnusson was down here, surely that should have provided some stability.”
“I am not the AAU lead consultant! I’m not even a consultant on this ward! I am here to help out and do a little teaching as far as CT diagnostics are concerned. I’m not a substitute for actual leadership.”
“It’s just me and a gaggle of nurses on the PCW, I’m splitting my time as best I can. Do you want me to ignore those patients instead?”
“No one will be ignoring anyone.” Felix felt compelled to step in. Not that Ms. Hale wasn’t doing a good job giving the American the what for, but if they were actually going to see change the ‘what for’ was only going to make Morris more defensive. His spine was already ramrod straight. “I believe, Mr. Morris, your role with our private care ward is supplemental, your primary appointment is as lead consultant on AAU. It is reasonable to expect you to split your time proportionally. Furthermore, it is reasonable that when you switch between wards, those under you know where you’ve gone and that there is some sense of a plan regarding direction and leadership in place. Ms. Hale and I will not always be on the ward to assist. Who is your ward manager?”
“Ward manager? We don’t have one.” Gud i himlen.
“What do you mean you don’t have one?!”
“Sheena left two months ago.” Beside him Ms. Hale made a soft, unimpressed sound. Something to ask about later…
“Unacceptable. Who is your deputy lead consultant?”
“A what?” Felix could feel pressure building behind his eyes.
“Your second in command.”
“Oh, well, Xav’s pretty on the ball. Aurelius too. Then of course there’s Sacha Bear…”
“Xav?” Felix only recognized Marcus Aurelius’ name out of all that Morris said. Xav he felt confident was a nickname for someone, there was no doctor, as far as he could recall being named Sacha.
“Marcus Xavier, he just joined us as a registrar last year.” Ms. Hale supplied. She was profoundly unimpressed, her cayenne red lips set in a grim line.
“You have no ward manager and apparently no other full-time consultants and no set leadership hierarchy amongst your registrars.” Felix repeated slowly, pinching the bridge of his nose. The FT audit started in three days and he was just now finding out that one of the primary wards was operating for the last two months, at least, at critical failure.
“I want a list of all your staff currently – nurses, registrars, foundation doctors, even the porters and how long they’ve been on the ward. There is a fundamental structural failure here, but it will require more of a fix than I can do at this moment. Until this is sorted, stay on AAU!” Morris looked both annoyed by the order and relieved at the promise of more resources. It was an odd combination of expressions to say the least.
Ms. Hale followed him to the elevator, her expression equally as odd.
“Something on your mind, Ms. Hale?” It was unlike her to keep her thoughts to herself.
“Did we just agree on something?” The twist of her full lips told him her musing was half in jest.
“I suppose we did.”
“And a few snowflakes fall in hell.”

Missed Classic 69: Borrowed Time (1985) – Introduction
Written by Joe Pranevich
If you are like me, sometimes research takes you places that you don’t expect. When I started into Batman Returns, I expected to find that it was a half-assed game produced by a no-name little software outlet who won the minimum bid to make the ninth licensed game based on the 1992 movie. And, it might still be that. I haven’t even looked at the game yet as I wait for a copy of the manual to arrive by mail. (I’ll be donating it to the Internet Archive once I wrap up my review.) Instead, I discovered the story of Subway Software and one of it founders, Bill Kunkel.
Rather than jump straight into Batman, I’d like to tell Mr. Kunkel’s story through a different game: an illustrated text adventure called Borrowed Time, Subway Software’s first release. As so many of these games were, it was a multi-party affair: developed by Interplay using their adventure game engine, based on a story and design by Kunkel’s company, and published by Activision. This was still around four months before Activision bought Infocom so it is not quite a cousin to the games that we have looked at in the Zork marathon, but it is a sign that they were interested in the interactive fiction genre. Borrowed Time has kidnapping, murder, and at least one HIPAA violation. It was also pretty fun to play to whet my appetite for Batman. Let’s get to it.
Bill Kunkel, enjoying a pizza in 2005.
Prior to doing my usual pre-game research, I had never heard of Bill Kunkel. That’s not unusual; while we have a few designers that we’ve come know very well, the majority of the staff in any given game is anonymous. I claim no special talent or access to sources, but a combination of Google and digging through old magazines and interviews usually gives us a picture. For some of these games, I enjoy the research even more than the playthrough! As I dug into Kunkel’s history, the information just kept coming: his writing projects, his impact on the history of video games, and even his battles with drug addiction. As a game journalist, he wrote hundreds of articles over four decades, not to mention fanzines on several topics, plus edited multiple magazines. He was an expert witness on several of the legal battles that shaped our industry. There’s no way for me to read and absorb all that in a couple of weeks, but he comes off to me as a fan’s fan. He loved conventions and fanzines, comic books and professional wrestling, and the gaming journalism that he would become famous for. Along the way, almost by accident, he ended up writing games. It’s a fun story– no doubt exaggerated by his own talent for self-promotion– but one that I am happy to share.
Bill’s writing career began in fandom, producing an independent science-fiction fan magazine called Genook when he was just seventeen years old. Genook was followed by Rats!, another fan magazine, but by this point he was establishing himself as a member of the New York fan community. It was through these fan-connections that he was introduced to Arnie Katz and Joyce Worley, a husband and wife pair who would become his long-time friends and collaborators. They are themselves worthy of a series of posts, a constant presence in almost every one of Kunkel’s projects. One of their first collaborations would be another fan magazine, Four-Star Extra, where the four of them would each write an article every month on a chosen topic. They introduced Kunkel to the DC writer and editor Denny O’Neil at one of their weekly fandom parties; it was through that connection that Bill sold his first comic book script, eventually to be published in the anthology comic House of Mystery. (Kunkel’s memoirs state that he sold this story in 1971, but the earliest I found it was in House of Mystery #252 in 1977. I am uncertain whether this story was shelved for many years, published without a by-line, or if the online comic book databases are incomplete for this period.) Based on this connection, Kunkel became a freelance “fill-in” author for DC comics, writing stories that would be held back and used if the regular stories of the issue were delayed. While they were sold, it is unclear how many (if any) were used by DC. It was not glamorous, but he was working in comics!
Several of Kunkel’s later games seem inspired by these early interests.
Without making it as more than a fill-in writer in comics, Kunkel embarked on a project in a different segment of fandom: professional wrestling. He and his near-permanent partners, Katz and Worley, wrote and distributed a magazine called Main Event featuring photography and articles about WWWF stars and matches. The WWWF was the precursor of the WWF and later the WWE. Kunkel both wrote and photographed for the magazine which was sold at WWWF events, with the support and permission of Vince McMahon, Sr. The magazine led Kunkel and Kats doing radio, a 1AM Main Event wrestling talk show on New York’s WHBI. Although Kunkel folded the magazine after a short time, he continued to love and write about wrestling for the remainder of his career.
By 1976, Kunkel was back writing comics. The second time was a charm and DC gave him higher profile work including a shot at reviving a 1940s character, “The Vigilante”, in World’s Finest. Looking back on his time at DC, Kunkel remarked that he worked on “Lois Lane, The Private Life of Clark Kent, Vigilante, romance stories, horror stories and Jor-El only knows what all else”. But Kunkel did not enjoy the corporate environs of DC and switched teams to work in the “bullpen” at Marvel. Once there, he worked on “Spiderman, Captain America, The Falcon, Wonder Man, Dr. Strange, and some fill-in stories that may still be sitting in the office files”. Even that work didn’t last long and he was shortly doing uncredited and low-paying work writing Richie Rich for Harvey Comics. He ricocheted around the industry, doing stints or freelance work for everyone that would pay him. By 1978 however, Kunkel’s life was falling apart. He was unable to make a living and considered himself a “parasite” on his wife and his marriage. By his own admission, he was already battling drug addiction. He needed a big break.
The very first “Electronic Games” in 1981. Can Asteroids conquer Space Invaders? We still want to know.
Kunkel’s “big idea” came in 1979 when he started writing “Arcade Alley”, a regular column in Video magazine. It is dramatically oversimplifying the story to say that he was onto something, that very few others were covering the nascent home video game industry. By 1981, this idea took form as Kunkel was able to convince Reese Publishing to back his new project, Electronic Games, with him as a writer and editor. The first issue soared off the shelves and the magazine quickly became a monthly, documenting and promoting the first era of home video games. Perhaps ironically, the magazine landed just as his marriage was ending. Kunkel was a leading voice in game journalism throughout the first age of video games, but the crash in 1983 that led to so many unsold E.T. cartridges also led to a decline in fortunes at Electronic Games. By 1985, he and his partners were out and the magazine’s first life was over. For Kunkel, Katz, and Worley, it was time to embark on the next phases of their careers. Enter: Subway Software.
Operating on their own once again, the trio formed two companies: one to further their journalistic pursuits and a second to design games. They had reviewed and discussed software for so many years– plus made many industry connections– weren’t they uniquely qualified to write games themselves? Nevermind that none of the three of them were programmers in a field where programmer-designers were still the dominant paradigm. From that idea, “Subway Software” was formed. The name was selected for the rather mundane reason that none of them (at the time) could drive. Instead, they traveled (and no doubt planned games) on the subway between their various homes around the city. They landed their first deal with Interplay and the rest, as they say, is history.
I have had some difficulty tracking down a complete list of games that Subway Software worked on, but between Wikipedia and MobyGames I have located seventeen games. Neither site appears to have a complete list and there may be inaccuracies. For our purposes, only four of them are adventure games and those credits appear to be correct: Borrowed Time (1985), Star Trek: First Contact (1988), Omnicrom Conspiracy (1990), and Batman Returns (1992). We’ll be looking at the first and last of those on this blog, plus the Star Trek game has been on my “want to play” list for some time. Subway Software appears to have closed its doors in 1992, just in time for Kunkel to start the “new” run of Electronic Games. We’ll look at that leap more closely and finish off his story when we get to Batman Returns.
My first time using an amiga emulator. I can’t seem to fix the aspect ratio.
Having come this far, there is not that much to say about Borrowed Time itself. As Kunkel and his friends were only providing the script and the design, the heaviest lifting was done by Interplay. Their game engine, already used for Mindshadow and The Tracer Sanction (both 1984), was done and supported a few different platforms. We’ve already looked at one game based on a later version of the same engine, Mike Berlyn’s Tass Times in Tonetown. Unlike Infocom who chose the least common denominator, Interplay believed in taking advantage of each platform capabilities. To that end, the graphics in each of the several ports are quite different. I’ll be playing the Amiga version as that appears to be the most mature of the several iterations.
Although I’ve focused on Kunkel, other credits on the game are no less important. We could have waxed equally about Brian Fargo, the plotter of the game, who founded Interplay Entertainment, worked on seminal games likes the Bard’s Tale series, and so many other things. He cut his teeth on The Demon’s Forge (1981), another early graphical text adventure we should look at eventually. He was joined in that role by Michael Cranford, another Interplay developer who was most famous for his work on Bard’s Tale.
The manual is about as boring as it is physically possible for a manual to be.
The manual itself isn’t very good, but it summarizes the plot well enough: “As private eye Sam Harlow, you must discover who is trying to murder you, collect the appropriate evidence and bring it to the police, while avoiding constant attempts on your life.” There is also a “Living Tutorial” at the start which provides a nice overview of the text adventure genre and how to play a game like this. I do not know why it is a “living” tutorial and they do not let you practice any gameplay; my impression is that they may have wanted to make it into a minigame but ran out of time or motivation. Even without being alive, it’s not a bad introduction to newcomers to the genre.
I am uncertain how much success this game garnered in its release, except to say that it must have been both successful enough for a re-release and not successful enough that no one thought name recognition would be valuable. It hit the bargain bins in 1989 as Time to Die. I have played through a bit of that version and, other than the logo, I did not immediately see any differences. With that, there is nothing to do but play the game!
Being a detective is so relaxing.
The Chase
The game opens in my detective’s office where I am sticking my feet up on a surprisingly bright day for a noir detective story. The phone rings and the voice on the other end warns me that someone wants me dead… A shadow darkens the window, but fortunately it’s just the window washer. Whew! Although not captured by my simple screenshots, the scenes are lightly animated. In this first scene, my feet is tapping a bit. In the next scene, the water cooler bubbles. In neither case is the animation more than a handful of frames, but it is a lovely touch.
I take stock: I’m carrying a wallet with my ID and a gun permit, plus a loaded handgun with six bullets. Is that a homage to hard-boiled detectives needing guns? Or a clue that I’ll have to be selective in how many people I shoot along the way? Searching the desk, I find an overdue alimony check made out to my ex-wife, Rita Sweeny. Could she be behind this? As I explore, I get the feeling that I am being watched. The writing is terse but tense. Just to the east, my secretary has her own desk notepad. She’s off at a dentist’s appointment, but she left me a note that “Mavis” called and wants me to get back to her. I try to call “Mavis” on my phone, but all I get is a busy signal.
  Bang. I’m dead.
I hear a gun cocking somewhere and I head out of my office… and right into an ambush. A pair of thugs are approaching me in the alleyway. If I backtrack into my office, they catch up and kill me quickly. I try to replay the start of the game faster, but that seems to have no bearing on when they arrive. I try to shoot them, but the game criticises me for resorting to that kind of violence… right before telling me that I’m dead. I even try calling the police, but they have a busy signal as well. What kind of police force has a busy signal? I search for other ways out of my office. The window-washer’s platform comes to mind, but I can’t open or break the windows to get out. What am I missing?
After my tenth restore or so, I discover that while I cannot run back into my office, I can run into the hotel across the street. That takes me into a lobby with a single chair and a door to the north. I duck behind the chair and the thugs shoot at me unsuccessfully, From there, I can crawl to the doorway and emerge on a landing at the bottom of a stairwell. If I even stop to look at anything, the thugs catch up and kill me. If I go up the stairs, they catch up and kill me. It’s a very tense situation. It takes a few deaths (and a close look at the screen) to realize that there is a lock on the door. If I lock it first, the thugs take longer to bash their way through. That gives me time to race up the stairs into an empty attic, a dead end except for a locked window. Unlike at my office, I can break this window revealing a shard of glass and a way out. I pocket the glass just in time because the thugs are running up the stairs.
If I were in the circus, I’d be going on top of the wire.
Outside the window is a ledge, but there is a cable covered with laundry leading to the other side of an alley. I can cross it hand-over-hand to get to the window of the bar across the street. The thugs stop firing but now they follow my lead to cross the cable. This window is locked and apparently unbreakable so they have a couple of turns to catch up and throw me to my death. On my next attempt, I use my shard of glass to cut the cable and send them to the street below. With the thugs defeated, I am now allowed to enter the bar and descend to street level.
Inside the establishment, the barmaid tells me that she had seen the thugs outside and tried to warn me– she is the person from Irene’s message. She tells me that she saw Farnham’s man, Charlie Lebock, tell my wife and Fred Mongo that I would never finish my investigation. Before she can continue, she is spooked by the sight of someone in one of the booths and runs out into the street. There is a lot to unpack here. She specifically said “my wife” which might be Rita, or maybe I got married again? I’m not sure. You’d think I’d know that sort of thing. Does that mean that Rita is working with Fred? Does Fred work for Farnham? There are too many names and I can’t stitch it all together into a plot yet.
Relaxing at the bar.
Pausing for Breath
That was exciting! Since my character has a chance to pause for a breather, I will as well. The interface is interesting, but not quite as functional as it appears. It consists of four key areas: an animated image, a list of nouns, a list of verbs, and a graphical depiction of our inventory. The noun list looks like it’s supposed to be updating for where you are, but it doesn’t; it’s still “correct” for my office and not much else. The list of verbs is also incomplete and does not cover many of the actions that I just needed to take, including “hide” and “break”. (Not to mention the lack of connecting words!) I’m not sure how sophisticated the parser is, but it seems fairly good for its era with full-sentence recognition. Maybe not as mature as Infocom, but a far cry from the two-word era of the early 1980s.
I’m going to leave us here for now, just as the game is about to begin. This is an introductory post so please feel free to leave your guesses for the rating below. We’ll be posting the final part in two days so don’t wait! As far as score advice goes, the only related game we have played so far is Tass Times, which scored 47. It was also played 170 games ago (one of the first for the blog!) so our standards may have wandered a bit since then. And yes, it really has been 170 games. Doesn’t time just fly by?
Before we go, I’d like to introduce you to a new YouTube channel that I like already, Critical Kate and her Patreon. After I had drafted this post, I was doing some final spot-checks when I happened to notice that she had just written a detailed analysis of the works of Bill Kunkel. It’s a nice case of parallel evolution that we were both researching the same guy at the same time and came up with a similar set of concerns with the material, although her detailed look at the publishing history of Video magazine and his comics puts mine to shame. I used her research to make some final adjustments on this post. I hope you will check her out. See you soon!
Note Regarding Spoilers and Companion Assist Points: There’s a set of rules regarding spoilers and companion assist points. Please read it here before making any comments that could be considered a spoiler in any way. The short of it is that no CAPs will be given for hints or spoilers given in advance of me requiring one. As this is an introduction post, it’s an opportunity for readers to bet 10 CAPs (only if they already have them) that I won’t be able to solve a puzzle without putting in an official Request for Assistance: remember to use ROT13 for betting. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with 50 CAPs in return. It’s also your chance to predict what the final rating will be for the game. Voters can predict whatever score they want, regardless of whether someone else has already chosen it.

Review: Deleilah (Small Town New Zealand Romances #1) @ktboweswrites

Deleilah Hanover leaves an affluent and destructive marriage, losing her entitlement to half the international corporation she helped her husband build from nothing. Broken by circumstance and shunned by the elite Auckland social set, she hides in a rural town to lick her many wounds. Harvey Gilroy offers a shoulder to cry on and Deleilah makes the grave mistake of trusting him as she journeys to his farm for what she thinks is a holiday. Desperate and once again on the run, Deleilah meets someone from her past and is drawn back to the tiny tourist town of her childhood in the foothills of Mount Pirongia. Just passing through, she is forced to face the demons of her teenage years and make amends for her abandonment of family and friends two decades earlier. But things are not as they seem and Deleilah can't share the truth about her sudden departure, not even with her three childhood friends. The foreigner, the fat kid and the foster boy have grown into a banker, a police officer, and a horse whisperer and one of them holds the key to Deleilah's terrible secret.

Deleilah by K.T. Bowes
Kat's rating: 5 of 5 stars
I have had this book on my kindle for ages, it was the only book I had downloaded on my phone, when I was out of Wifi range so it got bumped up the tbr so I had something to read at lunch and break times today (My current review read is hard to pick back up at the minute due to the Manchester Bombing at the Ariana Grande concert).
BUT Wow, once I started I couldn't put it down.
Now I know the place the book is set in places I have visited/lived (the Hamilton part anyway) but the writing and the world building was so good I felt as if I was sat on that balcony feeling the peacefulness described (the Lake was a favourite spot to visit and walk around).
The horse related parts also showed that Ms Bowes does indeed know her #EquineStuff, and I loved how she brought the wild Kaimanawa horse's into the story.
I finished this rural romance today, after reading long into the wee hours of the morning to a place I felt I would be able to sleep and not think where the story was heading.
Ms Bowes wrote a story that had me in the dark to who the father of 'Leilah's child was until the very end, in fact she put so many believable red herrings in that I had to go back a few pages to make sure I had not missed anything.
So well done for keeping me glued to my kindle all day and all last night.
A very real story, that highlights the reality of the struggles women go through to walk away from an abusive relationship.
My favorite character is Mari, her description is the double of my 'Whaea' (mother, aunt, aunty) I recommended this book to mine as I am sure she would enjoy this New Zealand themed book, lol even my new home 'Southland' is mentioned.
The only downside to the story is that there isn't a glossary in the book. the Kindle app dictionary doesn't do Maori unfortunately - so any readers who want to know what the words mean when you come to them, as long as you have Wifi/the Internet, then click SEARCH and Google will find this Dictionary, which has the added bonus of sound - I have and never will be able to speak the language properly it's a hard one to learn) - and its not really a downside - but I found it hard as I wanted to know and I didn't have any internet to search.
One part of the story reminded me of an actual event that happened while I lived there, I wondered if this was the inspiration for part of the events that happened.
A well deserved 5 stars View all Kat's reviews
#AuthorBio
K T Bowes was born in the Royal Air Force hospital in Ely in England in July 1969. Like other Defence Force children, she spent her early years moving around, attending five different schools including one in West Germany, before she was twelve. Starting high school was a bit like being thrust into a war zone and she has no idea how she got out alive, let alone with enough to be accepted into university to read English Literature. Her most interesting place to live was Market Harborough in Leicestershire, where she found a few things she thought she had lost and rediscovered a keen interest in the supernatural. But her favourite place in the world is at the bottom of her New Zealand paddock, on the river bank listening to the cicadas singing their summer song in the trees, while the resident horse accidentally-on-purpose blows snot down the back of her shirt. The bravest thing she ever did was jump out of a plane for a static line parachute jump, because a friend asked her to and the dumbest thing, was getting on a different plane with her husband and four small children with a one way ticket to the other side of the world. The most exciting moment of her life was marrying her husband after having known him only 5 months and meeting his family for the first time on her wedding day. Her favourite people are her husband and her four beautiful children, who are now too big for slapped bottoms but not for kisses. K T Bowes has 19 novels currently on Amazon, 8 in the Hana Du Rose Mystery Series, 4 Teen novels in the series, Troubled, Artifact, a historical romance and Demons On Her Shoulder, a psychological romance. The series, From Russia, With Love currently has 3 novels and another in the wings. There are also two other New Zealand series, one which follows a women's soccer referee and the other based in a small rural town. She loves to hear from readers.
