During every test, regardless of the lighting conditions, [two of the three cars tested] hit the dummy wearing the reflective strips without slowing down at all. … “The placement and motion of reflective strips on the joints and limbs of pants and jackets allows drivers to quickly recognise the pattern of movement as a person,” the study’s author, David Kidd, a senior research scientist at IIHS, said after publishing the results. “Unfortunately, the moving strips didn’t have the same effect for the pedestrian AEB systems we tested and probably confounded their sensors.”

I get why automakers are designing cars the way they are, but there’s just something about making them ricochet in a small overlap accident that worries me.
I mean just go watch the IIHS’s small overlap crash test of the Tesla Model Y. The initial impact looks decent, especially on the interior cam. The energy load looks low.
But if you watch the initial, full-speed clip with audio, you can hear (after the initial impact) that the car keeps going and collides with the concrete barriers that the IIHS keeps nearby to contain an out of control vehicle.
THAT worries me. Because that behavior can (and will) occur in the real world. It’s MUCH safer to get into a single accident (where the forces are a bit higher, but bring the car to a stop) than it is to get into a primary accident (where the forces are lower) and then get into a secondary accident (where the restraint systems have already fired and can’t protect you effectively).
And this isn’t a Tesla-exclusive issues. Volvo does this too because “it’s safer.” And yeah, in the initial accident it is safer. But the dramatically increased risk of getting into a secondary accident worries me. I have concerns about if it’s a worthwhile trade off.

https://www.autoblog.com/autonomous/hands-free-showdown-bluecruise-super-cruise-autopilot-which-one-owns-the-highway
Sensor and Software Breakdown
BlueCruise relies on forward cameras plus infrared driver-monitoring. It restricts hands-free to designated “Blue Zones” (Ford publishes region maps). Eye-tracking ensures the driver watches the road.
Super Cruise combines high-definition lidar-scanned maps with radar and camera data. An infrared sensor checks head position; hands off feels secure until map data detects new construction or unclear markings.
Autopilot (FSD Beta) uses a vision-only neural-net stack. It operates beyond geofenced highways but lacks the predictive map layer. Updates arrive over-the-air frequently, altering the cars behavior unpredictably.
Hands-Free Safety: Crash Counts and Fatalities Compared
GM’s Super Cruise boasts over 160 million accident-free miles with no publicly documented fatal crashes under its engagement . Ford’s BlueCruise has been implicated in approximately 32 reported crashes under NHTSA review, including two fatal collisions in Mustang Mach-E vehicles resulting in three deaths (NHTSA ODI, 2024) . Tesla’s Autopilot has been involved in 956 reported crashes reviewed by NHTSA and is linked to 51 reported fatalities to date (NHTSA EA22-002, 2024).
How They Rank
Ford’s BlueCruise tops Consumer Reports’ latest active driving assistance tests with 84 points; GM’s Super Cruise follows at 75; Tesla’s Autopilot lands at 61. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety assigns BlueCruise the strongest safeguard ratings, Super Cruise middling marks, and Autopilot a lower tier (IIHS, 2023). Meanwhile, NHTSA’s EA22-002 report links several Autopilot overrides to incidents when drivers regained control under glare or faded lane lines.

Sometimes, I still feel so able bodied.
Like the aches and pains are quiet for just a moment long enough for me to remember what freedom I used to have. It's almost like if I yearn for it hard enough, I can have the old me back. The me that could still achieve all my dreams. The me that had no idea what was coming and how much it would all cost me.
Somedays, I still feel the urge to live the way I could before. Carefree and boundless. God, I can almost taste it.

Idk how active an IIH community there is here on tumblr but I wanted to hand out a gentle reminder:
This is a difficult disease, be kind to yourself. And do not make it harder on yourself by forgetting about the idiopathic part of idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
We don't know what causes this. Be kind to yourself. A lot of advice online is based off of vibes more than evidence. And if following every borderline superstitious bit of advice you find makes you feel better? Have at it!
Obviously follow your doctor's/pharmacist's advice. But don't make yourself miserable abiding by every 50 mile long list you find online of things to do/not do eat/not eat And especially don't feel like it's your fault you have this condition because you're not doing "everything right." Because we don't know what all the right things are! It's literally in the name!

Please Help
For the most part, this blog is for fanfiction. I love to write, and love to talk to my readers when they share feedback about my stories. (I'm also considering doing a novel or two based on my fanfiction!)
But right now... I need to talk about something really important.
This is my friend. Her name is Kayti.
Kayti is essentially dying. Without the brain surgery she needs to save her life, she will die. I'm hoping to do a number of fundraisers for her--including, I kid you not, designs based on Crossroads of the Heart's Gabby's t-shirts.
But any help would be greatly appreciated. Donate, share.... every little bit helps.
