Description: When live on YouNow, fans capture Jonah’s face while looking at you and rumors spread like wildfire.

The Marais family was practically your family. You grew up next to them all your life and everything they went through, you went through.

Like when Jonah announced that he'd be moving to L.A to share a house with his four other bandmates. You, along with his family, were devastated. Jonah was your best friend, your ride or die, the Clyde to your Bonnie. But then he left and returned ever so often. Of course, you'd visit him a few times but it wasn't the same.

Even when he did leave Minnesota, you didn't lose contact with anyone. You would hang out with Esther and Svea and have dinner at their house whenever your parents were working. Sometimes you'd watch Svea while everyone else was busy and other times you and Esther would go out and do whatever you two could possibly do at the time.

You hadn't spoken to Jonah in a while, though, which was very upsetting because it was like the two of you were missing out on one another's lives - something that was always rare between the two of you. You always told him everything and vice versa, so it kind of sucked not knowing what he was up to. There were his Snapchat and insta stories, but that's all you had.

So imagine your emotions when he walks into your room at three in the afternoon on a random Saturday, Esther standing in your doorway recording everything.

Your eyes widen as you feel too astonished to move for a moment, not believing what was before your eyes.

"Jonah!" You scream after realizing that is was really him standing in your room. You jump up from your bed, your homework falling off your lap, and throw yourself at him.

He is quick to catch you, your arms wrapped around his neck and his around your waist. Your head rested on his chest as it vibrated from him chuckling.

"Hey, Buttercup," he mumbled, kissing the top of your head as you melted in his embrace that you've been longing for quite some time.

"I missed you," you murmured, his arms tightening around you when you say that.

"Awww," Esther cooed as she stopped recording.

You pull away from Jonah and he furrows his eyebrows when he sees the glossy look on your eyes.

"Don't cry," Jonah sadly smiled, cupping your cheeks.

"Shut up," you scoff before going back to hugging him.

The three of you headed to their house after you changed into some jeans and a clean tee.

"Jonah's back!" Svea squealed when you walked into her room, said boy walking on your heels.

"I know," you grin. She scooted over and you sat beside her, pushing strands of hair out of her face. "Now we've got him all to ourselves." You glance to Jonah who grins in the doorway.

The rest of your day was spent at their house. You and the Marais siblings hanging around and talking about anything and everything.

That night, Esther had gone to sleep early so it was just you, Jonah and Svea hanging on the back porch. You and Svea sat on the porch swing, her head resting on your shoulder as she plays games on your phone.

Jonah sat on a plastic chair in front of you as he signed into YouNow and started a live broadcast.

"Why now?" You ask, swinging back and forth on the swing.

"Why not?" He replied, shifting his laptop so you're in the view just as the views start growing.

"I see your point," you hum.

"Hey, guys, what's up," Jonah greets his fans as the view count grows by the second. "I'm back in Minnesota for the week, with my family and stuff."

"You're supposed to avoid being knocked off," you tell Svea as she plays another one of your games.

"Oh," she nods before retrying the level.

"The fans who've been here for very very long know Y/N and Svea, and if you don't, Y/N is my best friend and Svea is my little sister."

You salute to the camera with a small smile as the comments flood with the sweetest greetings to you and Svea.

Jonah answers questions and replies to as many comments as he can for the next thirty minutes.

where are you right now???

"Minnesota, my hometown, Stillwater."

never heard of stillwater

"Yeah, it's sort of a small town, I guess you can say," Jonah shrugs.

AWWW Svea is falling asleep back there

Jonah looks back and sees Svea sleeping against your shoulder, your free hand running through her hair gently. He smiles at the two of you just as you look up.

"What?" You raise a single eyebrow.

"Nothing," Jonah runs a hand through his hair. "She should probably head to bed."

"Yeah, I just don't wanna wake her up," you frown.

"I can carry her," Jonah suggests.

You sigh and purse your lips to the side. "Svea," you whisper, rocking your shoulder slightly. "C'mon, you're tired."

"Hm? No, I'm not. I was just resting my eyes. I wanna stay up with you two," Svea pouts.

"We're both gonna be here in the morning," you tell her.

"Yay," Svea yawns before sliding off the porch swing, you following after her.

"I'll be back," you tell Jonah as you follow Svea into the house, your hands on her shoulders. Jonah watches you two leave, slightly biting his lower lip before turning back to his laptop.

Jonah laughs with a small shake of his head. "Y/N's been my best friend for sixteen years, guys - not my girlfriend." He continues reading the comments. "Yeah, Y/N is like another sister to Svea and Esther, she's part of the family."

By now, Jonah's face was red and he faked a small chuckle to hide his embarrassment. "Guys," he complained, covering his face. "Stoooop," he laughs. "I adore Y/N as my best friend."

A few minutes pass before you return, sitting in a plastic chair beside Jonah now and not on the swing.

"How's everybody doing out there?" You spread your arms out and try your best not to be loud because Jonah's mom and sisters were currently all asleep.

Y/N I LOVE YOU || HIIII || IM DOING GOOD

"I love having fans because of you," you tease Jonah, who rolls his eyes with a smile.

"You have fans because everybody loves you," he mentions.

"That, too," you wink at him playfully before turning back to his laptop, bringing a knee up to your chest. "They want you to sing," you tell Jonah, poking him in the cheek.

"I have a sore throat right now," he frowns, using his knuckle to gently knead at his throat, knowing that that won't do anything to the cause. "You should sing."

"Haha, very funny," you deadpan.

Who remembers when Y/N sang in a YouNow a few months ago? || OMG WHEN Y/N SANG TITANIUM what a throwback || I wanna hear Y/N sing!

"I have a yucky voice," you say.

"No, you have a beautiful voice," Jonah says as he swipes under his nose, so his voice is kind of muffled, but both you and the audience he sported heard clearly.

"Aww, thank you," you coo, a cheesy grin on your face. "I could sing Twinkle Twinkle-"

"Oh, gosh," Jonah throws his head back as you laugh. "Sing the boys and I's new song."

"You and the boys have a new song?" You tease.

"Have you been under a rock?"

"I'm sorry, the world doesn't revolve around you, Jonah Marais," you snort, narrowing your eyes a bit. "No, I don't wanna sing These Girls, you fuck boy."

Jonah's jaw drops. "That's not what the song is abou-"

"Ehhhhh," you squint one of your eyes and cock your head. Jonah sighs and slouched in his chair as you send a wink to the YouNow viewers. "If I sing, you've gotta sing with me," you slap his leg.

"I can't sing with a sore thro-"

"Um, yeah you can. Jonah, you can sing with marshmell’s in your mouth. I know you," you tell him.

"Ugh, fine."

You smile and go to poke his cheek, a habit of yours, but he sways your hand away. You fake a frown and he rolls his eyes at you before pulling your finger up to his cheek, your smile reappearing after that.

"What song?" You hum.

"The A Team," Jonah quickly responded. You look at him with amusement for a split second.

"That was my favorite song in-"

"2011, yeah I know," he says, causing your insides to go warm.

Jonah and you don't pay attention to the comments as you both start singing the song, his voice a little deeper than normal but overall still amazing.

You pay more attention to your untied shoelace during the song while Jonah's eyes never leave your face. He forgets that they were live and all he sees is your face that he's been in love with for the past seven years.

His eyes glance to your lips for a mere second before he goes back to watching you whole, enjoying the sound of your voice syncing with his. You turn to him and catch the smile on his face, one growing on yours as well.

By the time it was over, you were grinning and Jonah was holding himself back from placing his lips on yours.

"I told you you were good, even with a sore throat," you smirk.

"I could sound like trash and you'd still tell me my voice is amazing," Jonah stated.

"That is very true," you point out. "That's cause I love you," you brush some hair out of his face and turn back to the viewers who were all holding their breath at the tension between you and Jonah, something you happened to be very oblivious to.

Jonah knew that either some or all of them caught him staring at you, and nothing was holding them back from commenting it for you to see.

You didn't get to read a single comment because Jonah quickly announced that it was getting late and closed his laptop.

"What was that for?" You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion.

"It's getting late. We should head to sleep," he stretches his arms out.

You shake your head and rise to your feet.

"That was so weird, though, how you just slammed it closed. They all must be so confused."

"Now I feel guilty," he says, flicking the porch light off and letting you go into the back door before he does, locking it afterward.

"You should," you chuckle, heading to his room and collapsing on his bed.

"Do you still have clothes here or did you take them back while I was gone?" Jonah asks as he places his laptop on his dresser and opens his pants drawer.

"They're still here," you get off his bed and open the closet, pulling out the basket full of your clothes. You pull out a pair of dark red leggings and a Plant Fitness t-shirt, changing into them with your back turned to Jonah.

You had gotten used to changing in front of Jonah by now, being that you two were closer than any other friendship you've ever known.

When you guys were young, changing in front of each other was normal and it still was now. To you, at least. You had no idea that whenever you'd take off a shirt in front of Jonah he had to hold his breath and think of the most disgusting things so his little friend didn't make an appearance, and half the time that wouldn't work so he'd have to go take a cold shower.

Like, now, for instance.

"I'm gonna take a quick shower," Jonah grumbles, using a pair of sweatpants and a blue hoodie to cover his boner.

"Okay," you turn to him just as he rushes out the room.

You woke up beside Jonah with your head on his arm and your legs tangled together under the bed sheets. You shifted your head so that you could look up at him.

"Morning, Buttercup," Jonah murmured, his voice low and raspy.

"Morning," you sigh, sitting up and stretching your limbs before falling back to where you lied previously and curling up even more in Jonah's side. The two of you lie around on your phones before you hop into the shower and get dressed for the day. You, the Marias siblings and their mother would be heading to see a movie in a few hours and you wanted to be ready early.

After you had gotten dressed, you hung around Jonah's room until he also got out of the shower and got dressed. Jonah was on his laptop while you sat right beside him, your thighs leaning against one another as you went onto Instagram.

Your normal daily scrolling goes by but something catches your eye.

You had always followed fan accounts for the boys, Jonah, Jack, Zach, Daniel and Corbyn. There are even a few for you. Chrstina and all siblings related, and you always smile when the people behind the accounts grow so happy when you either follow or like their posts.

Though this morning all of the accounts you follow seem to be focused on one thing.

There was one video of you and Jonah singing with a red circle focused on Jonah's face, which was directed towards yours. Jonah looks absolutely positively whipped, read the caption with a ton of hashtags underneath it.

Then there was a collage of you and Jonah from the live last night. One picture was of you brushing hair out of Jonah’s face, and the others were of Jonah looking at you with that adoring love-struck look on his face. I'll sell my soul for these two to become a thing that caption read.

You glanced up at Jonah with scrunched up eyebrows before looking back at your phone. For the next ten minutes, that's all you see. Edits and photos and collages of Jonah with comments and captions all focusing on Jonah's apparently obvious feelings for you. Well, not so obvious that you caught on.

You avoided the hate comments, too busy being confused on why Jonah would look at you so intensely.

You went into more digging and even found a few screenshots of Jonah looking back at you and Svea with comments that made you nearly choke on air.

"What's wrong?" Jonah asks when he sees your face turn beet red.

"I-uh... have you been on Instagram at all, lately?" You ask awkwardly.

"No, why?"

"Because all your fans who watched the live last night think that you have feelings for me," you rush out, not looking at him as you bite the inside of your cheek.

Jonah's eyes widen as his breath hitched in his threat. His unresponsiveness made you turn to him as he tried to find something to say.

"Jonah?" You ask slowly.

"I-um... I..."

"Do you actually have feelings for me?" You question, to which he still sits there nervously. But his silence is all you need. "When did it start?" Your voice was quiet now, and Jonah didn't know if you were disgusted, amused, confused or all of the above.

"When we were twelve," he mutters, glancing down at the bed sheets. You were taken aback by his answer. "It just started out as another crush but then over the past few years they grew and I can't look at any other girl without thinking of you. Trust me, I've tried to get over it, but I can't."

"Why didn't you tell me?" You frowned.

"I thought it'd ruin everything. You're my best friend and the feelings are unrequited-"

"I never said that," you pull in your lips. Jonah halts as his eyes snap up to meet yours.

"What?"

"I mean... there's always been that thought that crosses my mind every once in a while... but I was sure that you only thought of me as a sister, being that that's what you always say."

"I just... I want to try, but I don't want us to ever split as best friends. I've had you by my side for sixteen years and the last thing I'd want to do is mess that up."

"So let's do what you said. We can try," you shift closer to him, sitting with your legs in straddling position on the bed. Jonah's eyes glanced to your lips before the two of you leaned in. Your lips attached and you both moved closer to one another, your hands cupping either side of his neck as he has one arm around your waist and the other caressing your cheek.

"Just promise me one thing," you breathe, pulling away slightly. Jonah nods, his eyes not leaving yours. "No matter what happens, we will always be best friends, even if this all turns to crap in the end."

"It won't," he shakes his head. "It won't turn to crap."

"Just promise me," you beg.

Jonah looks at you with assurance before nodding. "I promise."

"Thank you," you sigh before leaning back in and connecting your lips once again.

My Top Romance Anime

I made a new set of list of my fave romance anime series since I guess i deleted my post accidentally w/c i always update ( i dont wanna talk about it i'm still in shock lol) so here it is i made it as simple as possible, no long description. Just my collection of anime that caught my heart while watching it.

1. InuYasha

InuYasha follows Kagome Higurashi, a fifteen-year-old girl whose normal life ends when a demon drags her into a cursed well on the grounds of her family's Shinto shrine. Instead of hitting the bottom of the well, Kagome ends up 500 years in the past during Japan's violent Sengoku period with the demon's true target, a wish-granting jewel called the Shikon Jewel, reborn inside of her.

Inuyasha has always been my fave since childhood. I love the love and hate relationship they have. Inuyasha being stubborn but ever since he met Kagome he learned a lot of being a good person. I just hate their love triangle with kikyo nevertheless I love how it ends. It's really worth it after so many years of watching and waiting for it.

2. Kamisama Kiss

Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she must keep things running smoothly, she will need the help of a certain hot-headed fox. In her fumbling attempt to seek out Tomoe, she lands in trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him.

I’ve never been so satisfied in my life until after watching all the episodes of this anime, the twist is amazing . It ends well. My heart was happy.

3. Wolf Girl and Black Prince

Erika Shinohara has taken to lying about her romantic exploits to earn the respect of her new friends. So when they ask for a picture of her "boyfriend," she hastily snaps a photo of a handsome stranger, whom her friends recognize as the popular and kind-hearted Kyouya Sata.

This is the first time i tried to watch anime series continously, i mean i never wanted to stand up while watching it haha it was good . I love how Kyouya manage to be so mean while everybody thinks he's a perfect prince, but i fell in love with this couple, theyre so perfect.

4. Noragami

Just as things seem to be looking grim for the god, his fortune changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, supposedly saves Yato from a car accident, taking the hit for him. Remarkably, she survives, but the event has caused her soul to become loose and hence able to leave her body. Hiyori demands that Yato return her to normal, but upon learning that he needs a new partner to do so, reluctantly agrees to help him find one.

aahh yatori makes my heart crave for more haha i mean dont expect a lot of romance on this, it highlights friendship . Yato being so childish and Hiyori is such a good girl, i cry whenever she loses her memory. The story is fun and I hope for the next season they will give exposure for my fave couple.

5. Inu X Boku SS

But Ririchiyo's troubles have only just begun. As a requirement of staying in her new home, she must be accompanied by a Secret Service agent. Ririchiyo's new partner, Soushi Miketsukami, is handsome, quiet... but ridiculously clingy and creepily submissive.

I love the twist, i dont mind watching this all over again. Their personalities is quite interesting, the story is cute with mix of mystery.

6. My little Monster

Shizuku Mizutani is apathetic towards her classmates, only caring about her grades. However, her cold view of life begins to change when she meets Haru Yoshida, a violent troublemaker who stopped attending class after getting into a fight early in the school year. He is not much different from her, though—he too understands little about human nature and does not have any friends.

oposite attracts haha Haru is so adorable. And their relationship is quite bumpy and unsure. But i think their feelings for each other are genuine.

7. Hatsukoi Monster

After meeting her rescuer yet again and discovering that his name is Kanade Takahashi, she confesses her love to him. Kanade says he would like for them to be a couple, but that Kaho may not want to date him after she finds out his secret. To her shock, Kaho discovers the startling truth: Kanade is a fifth grader!

Hatsukoi Monster follows Kaho's first steps into love with Kanade, her immature, yet kind, fifth grade boyfriend.

Age doesn't really matter lol. Its kinda weird as it may seems but who cares as long as you love each other then jump and take a risk. You can wait for the right time anyway haha. This anime is funny and i love how their friendship show. Accepting the situation and learn how to deal with differences is the lesson.

8. Guomin Laogong Dai Huijia

Lu Jin Nian and Qiao An Hao were not married by choice. On the first day of their wedding night, Qiao An Hao made three rules regarding their marriage. One, you are not allowed to touch me. Two, you are not allowed to announce publicly that I'm your wife. Three, you are not allowed to say that we are living together.

I've watch only the first two seasons. and i loved it. Its like a prequel to the story but i dont know why im satisfied with it haha, the truth is i dont have the strength to watch the season 3 and i dont even wanna know how it ends. haha while watching i was desperate and frustrated them to be together, i want a happy ending. But all I can see was barriers and situation wont let them be happy together. I hope they will make a movie based on this. All i know is it was too depressing but definitely has a good story line.

9. Red Data Girl

Izumiko begins by cutting her bangs, which shocks both her classmates and protectors. And that's only the start! Her guardian, Yukimasa Sagara, forces his son, Miyuki, to come to the mountain shrine and become Izumiko's lifelong servant and protector. Too bad Izumiko and Miyuki cannot stand each other. They have known each other since they were children, and Miyuki bullied her terribly. Will Izumiko and Miyuki work past their differences? Is she actually a literal goddess? Find out in RDG: Red Data Girl!

This anime left me hanging and didn’t give me the ending i crave for, i hope they gonna make a next season. but i enjoyed it so much, i love the main characters and the vibe it gives me. It's a serious mystery and a little bit of romance but not much. anyway i love this, never regret watching it.

10. Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?

Willem takes refuge on the floating islands in the sky, living in fear of the Beasts below. One day, he is tasked with being a weapon storehouse caretaker. Thinking nothing of it, Willem accepts, but he soon realizes that these weapons are actually a group of young Leprechauns. Though they bear every resemblance to humans, they have no regard for their own lives, identifying themselves as mere weapons of war. Among them is Chtholly Nota Seniorious, who is more than willing to sacrifice herself if it means defeating the Beasts and ensuring peace.

Not every story has good ending but im glad i watched this. The couple reminds me of kaname and sagara of full metal panic but in different way. Their personalities are so perfect for each other. I wasnt really into anime girls with different hair colors but Ctholly change my point of view, she's exactly one of my fave girls now, her being childish, jealous and innocent around Willem caught me. Funny moments will be present too and their feelings for each other blooms slowly every episodes that you just wanna watch more. I wish the last episode ended the way I wanted, anyway, I still dont get why Willem is involved into two different girls in the past, i guess it wasnt explained that much, i just hate the flashback how he remember the girl while he's with Ctholly,. Well all in all, i enjoy much I just hope they add new season, but i dont know how it will start haha. Im just happy to meet and add this perfect couple in my list.

So that’s it, i’m still in search of finding good anime romance. I hope i wont let my foolish hand delete this post again lol. Im definitely gonna edit this and add more . Hope you enjoy reading. :)

if i’m going to be a bitch and just get plain coffee, i’m gonna get it black bc otherwise i’ll just have a white mocha or a cappuccino or something (the ppl at the campus coffeeshop know who i am. they know my order. “one sin-ful latte coming up!” thank u for fueling my Addition.) i take my tea with milk and sugar if it’s black tea ((earl gray)) or with honey if it’s green tea. if it’s white tea i’ll sometimes have it with sugar, and if it’s something like peppermint or lavender or chamomile i’ll just have it plain. IM A PICKY BITCH

5: are you self-conscious of your smile?

i used to be! but now i like it.

poetry! i like to watercolor too, actually, though i left them at home :(

YES i miss my car bc that’s when i would have Prime Time to sing and hum to myself or along to whatever song i live for at the moment. (i’m into a musical rn and i can’t yell the lyrics out i’m so ANnoyed Always)

i have fucking countless at home……. at college there are quite a few too! as in: “hypothetically, vodka?,” “fuckinG,,,WHAT,” “[blow twice] [slurp sound] [tongue click] noice.,” “SHPEAKERSH OHN!,” “over there! like, over there? over there. over there?,” “just going to go kick some nutria,” and of course, the classic, “same, but jewish.”

12: what’s your favorite planet?

URANUS actually tho it’s uranus. i had to do my planet project on it in the 4th grade and i gave my brother AND mother silent treatment for two days bc they laughed at its name. i’m very protective

bunny the stuffed bunny! she’s pretty large, like as long as my torso! she’s white fabric with colored fluffy bits and very floppy, loose ears. she has green button eyes that i had my grandma sew on bc otherwise she actually scared me a bit when i was a kid, but i loved her anyway bc my great-grandmother sewed her for me in the first place. bunny still lives on my bed at home!

one i’ve been wearing a lot is the fork ring i got from the portland saturday market! it’s literally the tines of a vintage fork separated from the part you hold, sanded down so it’s round, and looped into a ring shape. i fidget with it a lot and it reminds me of my mom and step-dad, bc i got it when i was with them. i wear it mostly everyday tbh

yeeeeeeS i have several! the bistro, which is on campus: it’s so comfortable, it has couches everywhere and board games and so many books and zines and the walls are half chalkboard so there’s always art or snark everywhere. the music is super eclectic (it was lorde yesterday, today when i went in it was old-school 90s rap), plus it’s student run so the coffee and pastries and food are SO GOOD. the archive, which is downtown, is really boujee as fuck but it’s SO COOL. it’s so fucking aesthetic, with brown leather stools and uncomfortable booths and vintage books and stuff everywhere. for half the day, it’s a coffeeshop, and after 7, it becomes a bar. then back home, of course, coffee bean and tea leaf is the classic

Sine, Sine! I'm sorry to bother you, but do you have any good tips for writing 616 Tony! I just love your characterization so much :)

Oh, boy, an opportunity to talk about my fave! I was actually sitting here thinking, gosh, I hope someone asks me to write meta about my favorite characters sometime soon! And then you did, so thank you, anon! (And thank you, I’m glad you like my characterization.)

Uh. This got long.

I don’t know if what you want are tips on writing 616 Tony as distinct from other Tonys, or 616 Tony as distinct from other people in his universe, but I will try to hit both.

If you haven’t read Elspethdixon’s 616 Steve/Tony ship manifesto, you really should, because it contains the most important tip for writing 616 Tony, namely: Tony hates himself. A lot. Self-loathing is the background radiation of Tony Stark’s life.

The second most important thing, which you will also learn from that ship manifesto, and which you already knew, is that Tony Stark has a suit of Iron Man armor. Now, in MCU, we know that the way this goes is that Tony spends most of his life fucking around and being rich and wasted and making weapons until he gets captured in Afghanistan, takes a bunch of shrapnel to the chest, and decides to devote himself to superheroing. He has a secret identity that lasts… until the end of Iron Man 1. He is Iron Man, and it’s made him reevaluate his life. Also, he probably doesn’t hate himself. As much. I will leave that discussion to people who are more into MCU than I am.

616 Tony, on the other hand, becomes Iron Man when he’s really, really young. Like, early twenties. He doesn’t spend decades in dissolution. Vietnam is his impetus to become a superhero, yes, but it’s really not the same thing at all. By the time we get to modern canon this means he’s spent basically his entire adult life being a responsible superhero, and now he’s busy mentoring the next generation of superheroes – Kamala, Sam, and Miles while he was alive, and Riri now that he’s dead. (”Dead.” Comatose. Whatever.)

But the way that Tony’s self-loathing intersects with Iron Man is that he does the secret identity thing. No one knows. No one knows for years. Even after Steve finds out in the early 80s, most of the team doesn’t know for at least a decade after that. The public doesn’t find out until the early 2000s. (Twice. It’s complicated.) So even if you look at him now and see a guy with a public identity, you should realize that this is a very recent development in his life.

A lot of superheroes have tension between their caped and non-caped identities. Steve, for example, has a bunch of angst about trying to be Steve Rogers, a regular guy, versus Captain America, and how to live up to that, and how much of a regular life he should try to have. This is not Tony’s problem, as Tony’s regular life is… pretty out of the ordinary, as these things go. No, Tony uses his identity as Iron Man to fuel his self-loathing.

Iron Man is a hero. Iron Man saves people. Everything that is good about Tony, Tony puts in a box and calls it Iron Man. He compartmentalizes. (I could probably write a whole other post about how Tony’s a control freak.) Iron Man’s fine, and Tony develops a drinking problem. (Demon In A Bottle actually happened while Tony had a secret identity, and included him deciding that he was sick of being Tony Stark and was just going to be Iron Man.) While with someone else it might not be a bad thing to say that Iron Man is all the best parts of him… that doesn’t leave a lot to be Tony. And he doesn’t really like the parts that are left.

However, I think Tony Stark is still a really good guy. I mean, early canon is early canon, sure, but even as a boss he’s always depicted as, basically, the most benevolent face of capitalism you could possibly imagine. Like, the fantasy job that was available in the fifties and sixties where a dude could support a family of four and buy a nice house in the suburbs and then retire with a generous pension? A SI job is clearly that job. He knows his employees’ names, all of them, and he just seems deeply concerned about them, all the time. And, hey, how about that time he let the Avengers move into his house and never leave, huh? :)

Also he’s… not really a playboy, as I would use the term. During the early years, when he was dependent on the chestplate, he certainly used it as a cover, and we see him deliberately keeping himself from getting close to people because he was just going to die and make them sad (no really), as well as presumably to preserve his identity. We see him wishing that he could get closer to people because he has so much love to give! In the romantic relationships we’ve seen him in, he’s generally very devoted, occasionally more than the other person is, occasionally to the point of creepiness. (Okay, that’s not really one of his best traits.) He falls hard and fast. He just falls in love a lot. He sincerely does. He’s a romantic, even if his persona says otherwise. So, yeah, he has a public persona. Tony Stark is a public persona. It’s pretty evident that that’s not really him, either.

He’s not as quippy as MCU Tony, or as all-around warm-and-fuzzy nice as AA or MA:A Tony, or as utterly flamboyantly campy as Ults Tony (although, man, if you want to talk about drinking problems, go see Ults Tony). If you’re writing his internal voice, I tend to go with a fair amount of obscenities (more than Steve, anyway), and bring your science metaphors to the party if you got ‘em.

But, yeah, the self-loathing. I like to joke that you can tell it’s a good Iron Man comic if Tony is naked and crying, possibly in the rain, because he thinks none of his friends love him. (By this criterion, Iron Age and Execute Program are very good.) Possibly contingent upon the self-loathing, he never passes up an opportunity for self-sacrifice. Sure, any superhero worth his or her salt will happily die to save others – it’s part of the character type – but they all have to get in line behind Tony, who will be there killing himself first. Possibly several times. As many times as it takes. You know that moment in Red Zone where Tony rips off his helmet, exposing himself to deadly flesh-eating bacteria, to give Steve CPR and save Steve’s life, because Captain America is more important than him? That’s Tony Stark. I will also once again point to Execute Program, where Tony literally stops his heart to save Steve. He really likes killing himself for Steve.

I guess other than the self-loathing the main trait I think of as characteristic of 616 Tony is the sense of responsibility, and yeah, I do mean that in the Spider-Man “with great power” sense. He’s a founding Avenger. He knows what he’s doing. If you’re writing an MCU or an Ults story, say, there are a lot of things you could put the Avengers or the Ultimates up against that they’ve never seen before, and they might freak out. Just a little. (When the Ultimates first fight the Chitauri, Tony nearly gives up. He’s just a regular guy. He’s having a hard time dealing with this stuff.) But the thing about 616 is that it’s going to take a lot to make the Avengers, and by extension 616 Tony, freak out about anything. Their lives are weird. So, yeah, he’s seen it all, he’s vastly experienced, he’s been a professional superhero for ten or twelve years now – which, unlike in MCU, means it’s more or less his whole adult life – and he’s going to step up and take charge and do whatever needs to be done.

As an illustration of both his sense of responsibility and the degree to which he regards Tony and Iron Man as two different people, I want to point you to Iron Man v3, the Secretary of Defense arc. Following Red Zone, in which it was revealed that the Red Skull was the previous Secretary of Defense (616 governments are terrifying, okay?), Tony has been nominated to replace him. And we see his Senate hearing, and one of the senators has reservations about Tony’s suitability, based on his public persona. (This arc happens shortly after the first time the public learns Tony is Iron Man.) And this is Tony’s response:

Senator: We can’t let you loose in the Pentagon. You’ll turn it into a cult of personality and you’ll never listen to this body again! You’re too smart for school, Mr. Stark. You make up your own rules. For legal behavior. For being honest with people. I won’t even get into your personal life…

Tony: Is there a question in there, Senator?

Senator: It’s all a question! Why should anyone think that Tony Stark would put this nation’s safety before his own personal aggrandizement?

Tony: Because I’ve been doing that for years! Because I’m Iron Man – and I never ONCE took the credit!

Senator: What exactly do you mean, Mr. Stark?

Tony: Just what I said, Senator. “I’m Iron Man – and I never took the credit.”

Tony: Did I try to associate his positive image with my companies? Yes, I did. But that’s all. I never, ever asked for a direct reward for anything I ever did as Iron Man.

Tony: And for every life I told you I saved as Iron Man, there are tens – hundreds – that I’ve kept to myself. To save lives, I have traveled far. Farther than any of you will ever go. I have traveled to dark places. All alone, away from anyone who could see, hear, or help. I have staved off threats that you will never, ever hear about. The simple knowledge of them would wreak more fear and ruin on the world than I could ever hope to gain from them.

Tony: Yes, Tony Stark is Iron Man. But Iron Man is not about Tony Stark. Iron Man is about everyone else… and if Tony Stark is Defense Secretary, it’ll work the same way. That’s all I have to say. Thank you.

(This is IM v3 #76 & #78, BTW. We get half the speech during the hearing, and then half in boxes later while we see Iron Man risking his life to save people. Tony gets the SecDef job.)

So I think that speech basically sums up 616 Tony. He’s Iron Man, and he never took the credit. And that’s who 616 Tony Stark is, to me. It’s not just that he’s about accountability, as the MCU arc goes; it’s true that he’s also about accountability, but he’s about accountability not as something he’s finally learned but as a part of the core of his character from the very beginning, as a part of being responsible and doing the right thing and saving people. And not needing to take the credit.
