GRAUT as the POLICE COMMISSIONER (Dirty Cop)
Why they're in front of bars and not behind them, no one knows. This cop tampers with evidence to get an arrest, lets thugs off the hook for a bribe or discloses internals to the local mob. This cop may hand out vicious beatings or even worse to suspects or just anyone this cop doesn’t like, if not even worse. This cop makes most criminals and prisoners look like... well, saints.
Exactly how dirty a dirty cop is can range from simply taking bribes to let criminals get away with their crimes, to actively supporting the criminals, to being straight-up worse than the "regular" criminals who don't wear badges.

Sometimes I think about the fact that Frenchie sets the stage of Our Flag Means Death's world by starting us off with a song about how the world of pirates is a short and violent one, but how, despite that, it's still a desirable life, because it's "short but nice".
Our heroes do not live in a muppet world of pirates expecting long, happy lives and favoring cheerful shenanigans, and it's Frenchie who reveals that to us. It's also Frenchie who says, when asked about someone returning from a raid mentally devastated, that they should "bottle it up". It's Frenchie who sees a fancy party full of bigoted wealthy whites as an opportunity to make some money in a way that humiliates the fucks who wanted to humiliate him and Oluwande. And it's Frenchie who asks if Blackbeard and Company are going to kill them when the Revenge has been occupied.
Frenchie, despite his lighthearted demeanor, is pretty damned astute. He's clever and quick to evaluate the odds, and he does it without getting grim and bitter and overcautious. He's having a blast of a good time not because he doesn't know piracy is dangerous, but because he does and he's determined to make a good time of it anyway.
In another words, he's a pretty good choice to be an anti-Izzy Hands, at least in terms of helping out a captain. I don't know what Ed will do with Frenchie in season 2 now that the sewing is done, but I imagine he took Frenchie instead of Wee John, even though Wee John has the neater hand at sewing, because Frenchie is the person he saw running a scam and getting away clean, Frenchie is the one who saw *Ed* upset and immediately validated the source of the emotion (they're such dicks about spoons!), and Frenchie knows how to be a pirate.
He just knows how to have fun with it, too. If Lucius is an emotional counterpoint to Izzy (shoulder angel vs shoulder devil), then Frenchie could very well be a piratical counterpoint to Izzy, pointing out ways that they can find the balance between the softer, gentler life Ed hoped to find with Stede, and the grim, bloody realities of a pirate's life, so it can be short but nice. Because Ed's life, after all, has not been very nice.

it's in so many fics and so many metas and so many joke posts and so many people act like it's a blatant canonical fact that sometimes it feels like im going crazy
but every time i rewatch the show im struck by how literally the only solid evidence for the interpretation that izzy is essential in running ed's ship
is the fact that izzy says so

The implications behind Izzy being obviously famous and being a legendary pirate and Stede calling him Iggy…..like Stede has books on pirates there’s no way he doesn’t know who Izzy is but like for them to explicitly say that Izzy is this well known legendary presence in pirate culture and Stede still was like meh pretty shitty flunkie tbh

reading ofmd fanfic is wild cause it's always a game of "who's wearing the therapist hat today?"
you'll have stede or lucius or someone going "and how does that make you feel" and somehow managing to connect the dots on decades worth of repressed issues
like please do you honestly believe that any of these fucks have that kind of emotional intelligence? no they are all dumbasses that manage to stumble blindly into each other's issues like one would stumble into a landmine

ed marooning the crew and doing a direct murder attempt on lucius are choices that ed made. he is an adult with agency. regardless of how upset he was about stede and after izzy being a piece of shit to him, he still personally did these things. he personally made these choices.
stede does not owe the crew an apology for what ed did to them. that’s literally not his blame to take or his hurt to absolve. ed owes those specific apologies, ed needs to be the one making up for that hurt.

yknow my fave fanon from ofmd about series two isn't Lucius hiding in the walls (although it is fucking hilarious) or Stede finding the red silk despite the odds its that Rory Kinnear will come back and play either a 3rd badminton brother or Chauncey/Nigel's wife and children like that shit is fucking hilarious

This post might be for a very small niché of people but I just started listening to The Picture of Dorian Gray (I prefer audiobooks because my adhd makes it almost impossible for me to read books) and I couldn’t help but make up visuals in my mind and somehow my OFMD hyperfixation decided to enter the room and I couldn’t help but imagine Basil as Stede, Dorian Gray as Ed and Lord Henry as Lucius and honestly it worked so well it’s scary.
Please somebody make this an AU. I’d love that.
Granted I’m not that far into the story so this post might just age like milk but so far the headcanon works very great.
Love the chaotic sassy gay bestie energy between Lord Henry and Basil.
