This post might be for a very small niché of people but I just started listening to The Picture of Dorian Gray (I prefer audiobooks because my adhd makes it almost impossible for me to read books) and I couldn’t help but make up visuals in my mind and somehow my OFMD hyperfixation decided to enter the room and I couldn’t help but imagine Basil as Stede, Dorian Gray as Ed and Lord Henry as Lucius and honestly it worked so well it’s scary.

Please somebody make this an AU. I’d love that.

Granted I’m not that far into the story so this post might just age like milk but so far the headcanon works very great.

So my neighbor let me borrow the uncensored version of Dorian Gray until my copy comes in so yeah let's get gay everybody

Went to go buy a little more soil bc i figured the cucumbers are big enough to transplant and it got sunny and was nice weather for a little gardening.

Ended up planting very nearly everything, although not any of the flowers and not the beets bc i dropped them and they were so small i couldnt find them again :(

And also bought a lemon cucumber, crookneck squash, and zuccini, bc ... well .. they were cheapish and i didnt have any seeds of those but love growing all 3. So i planted those in as well... probably overcrowded the garden plot at this point but those peas are gonna come out in the summer when they die....probably same with the leafy greens. So once everythings big there'll be more space anyway.

But yeah... turned a quick bit of morning gardening into an all day thing, forgot to eat, forgot to change my bandages, and by the end of it i was just kind of standing in front of the crookneck squash for long periods, staring into space, head empty, totally caked in dirt, and about to fall over.

Was about to say i need someone to hang around me on weekends to make sure i dont accidentally garden long enough that passing out in the mud is an appealing optiin, but like. Just realized a perk of getting married is my husband gets that very dubious honor :3

Just remembered when my hs lit studies class read Hamlet (that class was so fun, always had a laugh with those guys) and we chose roles 'cause we wanted to like act it out during readings (resulting in some hilarious moments, like when I had to drag my classmate 'off stage' after mime-stabbing him through a blanket another classmate held up)

Anyway I read for Hamlet because that's so gender (and no one else really wanted to lol) and I lowkey liked the girl who happened to be reading for Horatio (it wasn't a crush but I uhhh yk thought she looked good n was cool like she read Jane Austen and did her research project on how Audrey Hepburn influenced fashion n stuff and just,, I think if she had ever asked me out I wouldn't've declined but ultimately it was aesthetic attraction more than anything else. And she was v likely straight)

And so I couldn't really suggest that like,, Hamlet and Horatio are perhaps gay for eo or anything 'cause I wouldn't've wanted to make her uncomfortable or anything

Earlier that year almost our entire class agreed that Dorian and Basil from The Picture of Dorian Gray were gay and she was legit like 'oh, I didn't think of that' like this girl was surprised?? We're all here either outright saying 'they're gay harold' or generally agreeing but she just,, did not consider the gay subtext afjahdkfkl (our teacher was trying to palm it off with an alternative interpretation and like yeah screw amatonormativity and all but,, the context, man. Oscar 'The Homosexual' Wilde was definitely queercoding his characters during the repressed as hell Victorian era ok?? But this was a Christian school so.. but like. Legit one of the classmates I sat with wrote a Dorian x Basil fixitfic I can't). And I basically ended up saying to her 'your interpretation is totally valid.. but you're wrong' nOT THAT I MEANT TO SAY IT LIKE THAT BUT IT KINDA CAME OUT THAT WAY AND EVERYONE REACTED LIKE I'D SPAT A SICK BURN OOF NO GUYS I'M JUST NEURODIVERGENT

So yeah while I wished I was cool n confident enough, there was no way I could've made a flirty joke about Hamlet and Horatio with this girl (even tho I generally wanted to point it out)

not to continue to bring up hamlet in the context of dorian gray but the parallels are soooo good i mean come on

dorian - hamlet: self-centered, unhealthily fixated on life, death, youth and how all things we hold dear die the quickest, bad at being nice to women

basil - horatio: gay, in love with the titular character, watching the person he lives for devolve into madness and pain without being able to help

sybil vane and her family - ophelia, laertes, polonius: literally their scenes together in the beginning before jim goes to australia are perfect parallels for laertes’ talking to ophelia before he goes to france. like, INSANELY similar. and then when sybil dies…

i also think it’s interesting that, of all the plays sybil performs in, she never plays ophelia. i could be wrong, but im like 80% sure that dorian never mentions her in hamlet.

lord henry is an interesting case because you could read him as rosencrantz/guildenstern, given his friendship with both basil and dorian, and i don’t disagree with that reading at all. but he sews the first seeds of doubt in dorian, he’s the reason dorian starts to freak out about the impermanence of youth. to me, he functions as the ghost. i mean, think of it:

basil/horatio meets henry/the ghost in the first scene, dorian/hamlet comes along and basil/horatio BEGS for him to be careful because he doesn’t want his best friend to suffer corruption. henry/ghost and dorian/hamlet have a private conversation which alters the latter’s outlook and mental state, and when he returns, he isn’t the same.

i’m so,,, i’m so normal about this.

So i got my mom to play omori. Its going to take a veeery long time to finish but I’ll try to reblog and update this post/thread as we move forward every once and a while cause she has some good thoughts about it so far. She unfortunately already know about Mari falling down the stairs from me talking to friends about the game in her general vicinity, but other than that shes going in blind so this should be fun !!

Anyway, so onto her thoughts. We’re at the point where you’re about to go searching for Basil in the Vast Forest and she seems to be enjoying it so far even if we could only play for a few hours. Shes *very* attached to Basil (shes just like me ong /j) and when he went missing she was absolutely horrified. In her own words, “Basil.. very soft soul. He’s- He’s very soft. Uh, he might be gay. I’m not sure, because he’s very sweet and soft spoken and has a flower crown and he, he seems a little gay, I’m very worried for what may happen him if he doesn’t grow a pair.” (She adores him though. When he went missing she grabbed me and was like “oh my god is he okay. If anything happens to him im gonna stop playing i love him so much.” So.. i wish her luck.)

She thinks Aubrey is a little self-centered, very loud, but she likes the confidence and thinks she seems ok. She feels similarly towards Kel, though she seems to like him a lot more. She really just said that he seems very sweet but needs to stop fighting with Aubrey.

She doesn’t really have an opinion on Hero, he’s, “just sorta there. Hes just a normal guy,” in her words. I assured her he gets better, but for now she’s impartial. Mari on the other hand, she’s very concerned for. Aside from her knowing that slight spoiler that she fell, she’s just weirded out that she stays at the picnic all the time, because “after a while that would hurt your butt.” She seems to like her well enough, and thinks she’s sweet but she’s definitely a bit concerned too.

As for Omori, she thinks he seems like a very kind, old soul sort of person but he also scares her a bit because she can tell his story’s going to get very sad eventually.

Overall she seems to like it so far!! Yay !! I’ll reblog with her opinions on story and stuff next time we play :]
