The great general remained, and then saw a wonderful vision clearly shown him by the very God of the universe himself. In it he seemed to see the divine Meletius, chief of the church of the Antiochenes, investing him with an imperial robe, and covering his head with an imperial crown. The morning after the night in which he had seen the vision he told it to one of his intimate friends, who pointed out that the dream was plain and had nothing obscure or ambiguous about it.
Theodoret Ecclesiastical History 5.6
wahoo! Theodosius! so a repeating phrase in the gospel of Luke is 'do not be afraid,' but specifically: I'm most immediately referencing the annunciation of the shepherds (Luke 2:10) because I used this illustration for the last panel since it. sort of. connects to Valens, Theodosius' predecessor, who went from commoner to king at the will of his older brother. HOWEVER. because of that transformation. I cannot escape the 'do not be afraid' just a chapter before (Luke 1:30) that Gabriel gives to Mary because ascension to the imperial throne is an ugly, violent, and violating transformation. and. well.
Tumblr media
Gabriel’s Entrance and Biblical Violence in Luke’s Annunciation Narrative, Michael Pope
also in general. prophetic dreams and visions. horrifying. it never goes well for anyone.

Hello, I was just readying the silence and the storm, and had the funniest thought. In TIATD Trazyn brags about him having a statue and a mural made, and Orikan not having any. In your story, based on how Trazyn describes Orikan's divine form, I imagine Orikan got something better than a statue, his first worshipper.
A baby god's first worshipper.
This was too silly to just keep for myself, I hope it gave you a chuckle, too.
Look, did I intend to give Trazyn a divinity kink when I started this? No. But sometimes characters just tell you what they want and you gotta roll with it.
I actually wonder if Trazyn would have had worshippers on Serenade? Since he was in a church, although I don't know if the Imperial church literally worships saints or if they venerate them (as in modern Catholicism). What I've read seems to lean towards the former, as I can't recall a case of someone asking for intercession but who knows?

It ended up being way more intensive than I had planned, but I did finish the writing for the Zelda video.
I managed to grab that James Somerton video he made about queer portrayals in Nintendo before it was privated. I haven't located any evidence suggesting it was plagiarized given the extent he's done it in nearly all his videos but that doesn't mean it hasn't occurred. I'm still trying to search and see if I can find any evidence of plagiarism to credit its proper author(s) if it is in fact stolen. There will be a section discussing the intersection of queerness and race with queer readings of Link and the Gerudo.
That aside, I wanted to share a bit! I picked out paragraphs out of order from how they're actually written, but these are a few of the points in the section about "the natural order of Hyrule."
Both film and TV westerns purport to be based on US history: the past is reframed as a glorious undertaking, the fulfillment of God's wish for his chosen people or as a rescue mission designed to rescue the pitiful other from himself or from some demonic other. Such fantasies serve to justify and legitimize colonial norms and practices. Stam and Spence explain that the colonial enterprise was often presented as a philanthropic "civilizing mission," reframing the colonial presence as a humanitarian intervention rather than an invasion. - Native Americans on Network TV : Stereotypes, Myths, and the 'Good Indian'
In Zelda Lore, it's said according to an entry in Hyrule Historia that "Hylians possessed a special power: it was said that their long ears allowed them to hear the voices of the gods." there's an inherent birth connection to the gods and to divinity in this series.
The best examples of community portrayal in the game exist when you remove Link from the equation. There are numerous instances of the different tribes providing support to one another--the Gerudo providing aid to refugees of Lurelin village, people providing resources to the Rito in their time of crisis, and the construction town helping in the rebuilding effort.
But a central part of what separates gaming from other types of media like books and TV is that you're not just a reader or viewer, but a player--you're asked to actively take part in the narrative and influence it yourself.
That community commentary also conflicts with the desire to treat Link as a demigod with the most major figures in the story continually sacrificing their autonomy and personhood to become resources that Link is ultimately to wield. Rauru gifts Link with some of his powers to save him from the Gloom. Mineru becomes little more than a rock 'em sock 'em robot for Link to pilot with little to no actual concern for her as a person.
Zelda is given the illusion of having agency in this story with how she orchestrates the conditions for Link to be able to defeat Ganon, but ultimately that doesn't come from her utilizing her research skills or building off the things her family provided her. Rauru even says he believes Zelda arrived to them for a reason, and based on what happens, it was ultimately so she could sacrifice herself yet again.
I'm not in the camp of people who wanted to see Zelda permanently stay a dragon at the end, I just want Zelda to not continually be sidelined in a series that constantly asks to sacrifice herself so she can't be an active part of the story.
The land and society once owned by gods must be restored and brought to its former glory as it is fated to be led by the divinely chosen Hylians. To that end, to defeat the evil and violent Middle Easterner who has defied the natural order of Hyrule, everyone must sacrifice themselves for Link to become the divine governor of power.
(This portion is part of the conclusion)
In thinking over what to write for this last portion, I came away feeling Nintendo's patterns here are a good example of why we should heavily value and take seriously the talents of artists and character designers.
It's important because art is so valuable in how it shapes the implications of the story, intentional or not.
I'm not here to convince you to boycott or stop playing Zelda because the issue goes beyond the scope of this individual franchise. What I ask more than anything is to see the people being propagandized as human and to equip yourself with the tools to better detect and resist the narratives both in fiction and non-fictional media.

lazy scribbling of my baldur's gate 3 characters
#*emerges from 430 HOURS of life-changing playtime blearily like a lost and confused kitten*#i lost my interest in drawing bc everything is too sad & horrible right now. it was a luxury and privilege to lose myself in this instead#what follows will be my personal and trivial emotions about that#i'll do better proper drawings later. for me. they are both so very dear to me... deeply dear...unforgettable journeys of fate#truly have played like one possessed for the past few weeks. you have no idea. what do i do now. what do i do.#their personalities are so vivid to me though they mostly made the same choices. both intersex and they/them - canonically <3#i missed out on FOUR PARTY MEMBERS in my first playthrough due to not understanding anything whatsoever.#gloaming ended up with wyll and pavane romanced karlach and astarion. and ended up with the one i did NOT plan on. this wasnt the plan#one of the most fulfilling romance paths i've ever..i cant say more..it all got too immersive and now i have to just.. MOVE ON ??????????#live in THIS world where i can't gut imperialism personally and emerge alive from that?#without Long Resting? without my character requesting a kiss from their beloved after a tough day ??#without preparing my little spells? without channelling divinity from my death god to keep us all alive?#without dyeing my man's clothes fancy colours for him? without him Approving whenever i lie and double-cross our enemies#without sharing clothes with my ex? without choosing to eat the heavy food first so that the weight is easier on her Carrying Capacity?#without orchestrating ways for all of my friends to kill the abusers that ruined their lives for a decade or even 200 years?#without experiencing degrading horrors on a daily basis but in a cathartic way where we always make it back to our rooms at the inn#WITHOUT SPEAK WITH ANIMALS???????????#at least there's music. just like with persona 5 that will always be with me. always#like how p5 melodies take me back to those feelings. those rich and personal feelings.... BUT THIS WAS A WAY MORE NUTS EXPERIENCE#i thought i would hate it. i did at times. thought it would desensitise me to various things. it did. but there was so much more..it was...#Well anyway *continues my life* imagine if dnd was real..something to think about

Halfway through league of dragons and it's really funny to me that Ning came out of the shell with Temeraire's cleverness and iskierka's lack of any shyness when it comes to things she wants, and with a mix of the two very dangerous breaths as well, she's a disaster that's already happening and I can't wait to see what comes of her

📚 March Reading Round-Up 📚
Read some pretty great books in March, and there's a few I'm still reading that I hope to finish in April!
I was able to continue some series that I've been reading, such as The Murderbot Diaries and Kushiel's Legacy. I also finally finished the Imperial Radch trilogy!
- House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J Maas (partial re-read, Partial re-read, very good, kept wanting to read more, didn’t cry but felt the Emotions, friendship! Connected much more to some characters this time around)
- Divinity 36 by Gail Carriger (Good, engrossing, very emotional, lots of heart at its core, enjoyed it more as I continued reading)
- This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (thank you Bigolas Dickolas for the push to finally read this book! Loved the audiobook, beautiful, not as confusing as I’d feared, loved how their relationship developed, the prose and metaphors and language…)
- Traveller's Joy by Victoria Goddard (Good, emotional, heartwarming, some sadness and dramatic irony, friendship!)
- Kushiel's Chosen (finally got to the second book, and it didn't disappoint! So good, kept binging it, so emotional and philosophical, heartbreaking at parts, loved it even more than book one)
- Network Effect by Martha Wells (so good and readable, Murderbot my beloved, loved seeing the characters and their relationships and Three, Murderbot being rescued!!!!)
- Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie (Read it in one sitting immediately after finishing Network Effect, so very good, loved the themes and characters and how they developed and grew, that ending!)

something something pax is afraid of the afterlife rather than dying itself. after relinquishing the divine crusader title, he felt he was going to be denied access to aetherius. after being cursed, vampirism means his soul goes to coldharbour ( he rather be banished to a limbo rather than there ). it’s likewise with possession. his soul would end up being dragged into the possessing demon’s domain or the realm of whatever demon it is subservient to; still coldharbour. molag bal being an extremely powerful demon of domination. hunger demons fall under its command. something something

Why are mortals always so interested in TALOS and not Ebonarm? both of them ascended to godhood from mortal life, and Ebonarm didn't need to be uplifted or three separate people to do it. Is it because he's Yokudan?

One of the things about the Horatio Hornblower series is that it keeps pointing out that while Hornblower can raise through the ranks of the English navy on his own merit, it is very difficult to do so without friends in high places whereas those with peerage and connections can do so far easier. In his youth he pushed himself to take risks he wouldn't have otherwise in order to distinguish himself, and even then his promotion to commander was delayed by the British navy due to England and France signing the Peace of Amiens when he was on the way back home to confirm his appointment (he impressed the lord of the admiralty with his analytical skills playing whisk before conflict broke out again who confirmed his appointment. Hornblower, meanwhile, was reduced to poverty because he had to pay back his additional pay for the unconfirmed promotion while also being on half-pay due to the peace).
Think about that, then look at Shez's C support with Hubert.
I think that's the discussion we had some time ago (I think?) about the Doro mention in this support ?
Doro sacrificed a lot and worked very hard (and "caught the eyes" of many nobles who asked her to "sing" for them) to become the famous songstress she is when the game starts.
And yet, while Shez still calls her a commoner, Hubert corrects them, Doro isn't a mere commoner like Joe the carpenter or Karin the miller or Shez the mercenary, Doro became an important commoner. Just like noblity has minor and not minor nobles, commoners come in different "importance", you have Doro and... Leonie.
Even still, Manu, in her support with Flayn, reveals that hard work and stuff isn't sufficient to become a diva - at one point, aspiring divas have to "catch the eyes" of a noble, and raise through ranks like this.
So yeah, without "friends" in high places or positions, a random commoner, even if they are the best at doing what they do, will never raise through the ranks and transcend their initial condition of beta commoner.
Wait...
The more I think about it, the more I realise that some supports unvailable in CF, especially with Nabateans, blow massive holes in Supreme Leader's rhetoric.

Talos is Jesus
Not sure if this has been said before but i just had a massive Apiphany.
Talos from Elder Scrolls is a Jesus figure.
Stay with me now, Talos is the Hero God of the Nords and huge deal in Skyrim for good reason, he is well known as the hero of the Nords and a great king and after his death he was deified and worshiped by many.
After thinking about it I started making some connections and realized a couple of things that lead me to believe that Talos is a Jesus figure.
-He was a human who ascended to Divine status after his death.
-His following is persecuted and outlawed in Skyrim by very obvious roman inspired group.
-He is the "Son of God" as in he was a Dragonborn descended or has power from Akatosh.
-His following at least in Skyrim consists of mostly white euro centric peoples with a pension for xenophobia and racism.
After all of this I definitely Talos could be conflated with a Jesus or Jesus inspired figure, Thank you for coming to my TED talk. :)

Tumblr Users: We respect pagans and witches. Yeah! Stick it to the church! Take back your culture! You're doing great! Also Tumblr Users: Wow, can you believe there are people who actually think fairies are real? What fucking idiots. Walruses are real at least, but can you believe how STUPID and brainless people are that they think fairies are actually real? What? It's important to your religion and culture? Fucking moron. Fairies aren't real and you're the most stupid person on the planet for thinking they're real.
