random, barely comprehensible word vomit about in the gloaming
because i'm obsessed and in tons of pain
The entire movie maintains a heavy air, melancholy weighing in the contact the characters’ eyes share, yet make room for levity in Danny’s conversations with his mother.
Danny reflects on his past, yearning for what could’ve been. He’s unsure of whose remissness on the topic of his lover was to blame for what he didn’t have; His own, or his mother’s?
What if he’d come out sooner? Could he have salvaged their relationship? Would it be just as he imagined? Could he have enraged his family and treated the arguments with a careless levity, just as he imagined? Could they have learned to love and accept each other, to hang each others’ ornaments in their family trees? Could they? Would they?
An analytical young man who, while glib in his words, knows.
She knows she’s messed up. She’s made too many lapses in her life. She wasn’t as inquisitive as she should have been. But it’s too late to worry about that now. She needs to be with her baby in the now. She needs to shut out everything she couldn’t mend, she needs to be with her baby.
Non-confrontational–We don’t need to talk about it right now. We just have to deal with it. This is the way things are.
You can’t change the past, but you may the future.
Anne’s life, from a childhood of being a glass door to her brother who had the favor of their mother that she tried so desperately to earn, feels like it’s culminating to this; Mother’s favor turning into more than just favor. She shields her child and withholds love because of the damage inflicted on her by her mother, as though Danny turned out the way he did because of excessive love from their mother, as though her child may turn out the same way if he comes into contact with him. Unresolved.
No matter what she does, how many wonderful things she does in her life, no accomplishment could hold a candle to dying. She’d officially lost.
He who cares for his family so deeply but has no way to express it. He who has a bottled ardor for his child but can’t find the means to connect in the same way he sees in his wife; Is it too late? Did he wait too long to realize their relationship could never have been “normal?” Was it enough to bring out the lamb and grow the tomatoes? Was he too late?
Four people separated by more than just miles.

i know this is just entirely a coincidence, but it's interesting to me that wilson's brother danny is kinda like a combination of rsl's other roles. danny was his characters name in in the gloaming, and rsl played a schizophrenic character in the boys next door. it probably means absolutely nothing, but i love deluding myself so i'm gonna pretend it does

BG3 Companions on a Halloween Date
YES I was itching to do something for the BG3 gang for the season. You could say it's been bugging me. Hah. Ok sorry it's the influence of my pfp.
Let's start with
Tumblr media
You want a cozy night in under the covers, watching scary movies (or puppet shows or whatever the heck is the equivalent in Faerun) but he's not sold on the idea. "I've seen enough horror to last me several lifetimes, darling."
Instead Astarion would take you out in the crisp Autumn air, under the distant sun, for a walk crunching through the dried leaves of brown and red.
He'd want to go to the pumpkin patch to find the perfect gourd for a Jack-o-Lantern.
When the sun set so very early in the afternoon, you'd retire back to your cozy abode and set to carving faces into your pumpkins.
Astarion of course would make short work of his, dexterous as ever with those knives, and he would do his best to shape the face into what he hopes he looks like.
Either that or, depending on where you're at in his character arc, he'd remake Cazador BEFORE gutting it and making a whole show of utterly eviscerating the poor Halloween decoration. "Astarion, this is supposed to be relaxing." "This IS my ideal downtime."
Tumblr media
You want someone who will snuggle under the covers and watch Hocus Pocus with you? Wyll is your man. But sorry I'm trying to keep to a less modern AU.
Wyll seems like the kind of guy who would put on some fitting music as you two cooked together, dancing in the kitchen intermittently and almost forgetting to check on the cookies before they burned.
He's such a sweetheart, checking to make sure you're happy with just spending an evening indoors with him. "We can go out on the town if you desire, sweetheart." "No, Wyll, I've told you this is absolutely perfect."
Depending on the choices you've made with him thus far, Mizora might pop in to dip her finger in the batter and bamf out again, giving ya'll a cheeky wink. "Ta ta, love imps. You make me physically ill."
Tumblr media
Sigh, you're back for more bones hm?
Alright I'll entertain you.
You ask Withers to dance to Spooky Scary Skeletons. He looks at you, unimpressed. "Get thee hence." "Wilt thou harass someone else?"
Tumblr media
Ideally I would propose and she'd say "yes". Oh what? Sorry, I was miles away.
For a Halloween date. Hm. A corn maze. Definitely.
She'd be all about her tutelage under Shar's freaks followers and want to show off her sneaking skills.
It would turn into a game of hide-and-go-seek and then it'd get a little creepy before she'd inevitably pounce on you and you'd end of in a fit of laughter together.
"I wasn't going to hurt you!" "Well, Shaddy, sometimes I wonder." "Good to keep you on your toes, then." "Careful, I saw a pond on the way in."
Then you two would go and get some candied apples and chat about memories and flowers that bloom in the gloaming.
Tumblr media
Oh Gale.
He'd love to read to you out of a classic gothic novel (cough cough Dracula cough cough) while you two cozy up under some blankets.
He'd probably get fresh with you and run a hand up your leg or something, OH SORRY this is post the patch that fixed that? OK. He'd wait an extra hour.
Tara would curl up next to you and listen as he read from the book, the firelight crackling and warming your bodies as the night grows dark outside.
Afterward he would ask if you'd like to be guided into the Astral plane where you can look down on the All Hallow's Eve festivities below.
Tumblr media
yeah, gotta give Tiefling daddy some love. Especially since I still feel bad for massacring them all my last playthru.
Zevlor is another who has seen his fair share of horror, and he would opt to do something more lighthearted with you for a Halloween date.
He seems like a family kind of man, so I expect he would invite the whole gang over for a delicious dinner. Mol and her friends, Arabella and her parents. Rolan and Zorru and maybe even Auntie Ethel will sneak in there. Then it really WOULD be a Halloween experience.
After the dinner and the guests are snoozing or already left he'd wrap an arm around you and pull you close. "Would you accompany me outside? I would like to show you the stars and tell their tales. It's been so long since I've gotten to properly admire them. Or you."
Tumblr media
Of course I have to include the daddy devil, who do you think I am?
Raphael would take you to a haunted house, of course. OF COURSE.
Hell, what better house that is haunted than the House of Hope?
It would be horrifying for you, since the no touching rules don't apply there, and most amusing for him.
You'd practically climb the cambion in your efforts to avoid the ghosties, especially that one who constantly says "huuuurt meeee, pleeeaaase."
Raphael would enjoy watching you squirm, and remind you such a fate would not be yours only IF you followed his rules.
Oh yeah, and maybe if you're lucky, or perhaps very unlucky, he'll invite you to his Boudoir.
Tumblr media
Oak Father frowns on dissecting pumpkins for the sake of creating superfluous lanterns (or something...I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend, ok)
Instead, Halsin would druid craft you vines and harvest fruits in whatever shapes, sizes, and colors you desired.
He'd also want to go trick or treating so BADLY. "But Halsin, you're eight feet tall and built like a linebacker. No one is going to mistake you for a kid." Then he'd cast Disguise Self and you'd be forced to take him out on the town in hunt of candy.
Poor guy didn't have much of a childhood and wants to experience the finer things in life. Get those king sized candy bars...just once.
You are a bit huffy, having expected a more...romantic evening than this. But he'll make it up to you later winkwonk , till you can bearly stand it.
Tumblr media
Aw
You guys would get all CUTE and gussied up together.
Go out on the town.
Pick the best looking victim to be a sacrifice to Lolth.
Wait...what?

summary: A callow boy can go from infancy to someone’s lover in the space of two wildflower summers.
reader note: top three favourite fic of all time, thinking of that post 'I'm never not thinking about other brothers by homo_pink' me too. Outisde POV, pre-series sam/dean
Flowers in the Impala by Evandar

reader note: oh it's a delicious outside POV of how fucking weird our boys are. Pre-series sam/dean
Squint into the Sunset | Glare into the Gloaming by Dyed_Red
summary: The 70k-word nonlinear coming of age story that literally no one asked for.
"I know you want to give him the world, Dean, but you were never supposed to give him this."
reader note: I feel like this is an underrated fic, I really enjoyed it and I'd put it up there with the invisible boy series!
Howls in my bones by weefaol
summary: When John gets a call to investigate a series of grisly animal killings, he drops Sam and Dean at an abandoned cabin two towns over. The boys find ways to keep busy — playing cards, watching movies, chopping wood — but with a howling winter storm on the way, there’s nowhere for Sam to hide his illicit feelings for his older brother.
As the lure of desire threatens to devour him, Sam must learn to face the wolves that lurk outside and the monsters within.
reader note: so beautiful, one of my favourites. pre-series sam/dean
Letters from a Half-Finished Boy by homo_pink
summary: Dean discovers a secret journal Sammy's been writing in.
reader note: homo_pink again, I love all their spn fics. Oh angst teenage sammy I love you
Hot singles in your area by applecrumbledore
summary: In the video, the camera crawled up the kid’s body like a pair of lascivious eyes. The pan upwards revealed a sweet, pointed nose, and a mole to the left side of that nose.
Dean froze, watching. The kid’s eyes opened when the camera was still on his face, pupils darting nervously away, and those eyes were hazel green. A specific kind of hazel green that Dean had spent exactly thirty-six years looking at.
readers note: obsessed with the way Dean hunts down the guy Sam did porn with 21 years ago or so it's so canonically dean like that's exactly what he would do

What are your favorite pieces of media that you think accurately represent magic and spirit work? Movies, books, even music..
This is an interesting question, but one that requires a lot of thought, as I have read and watched an inordinate amount of books and movies. Plus, even really good fiction with pagan themes that I've read/watched is generally inaccurate in most ways, with some realistic aspects of magic woven in here and there. Some of my very favorite media relating to the subject can't really be included, simply because of how inaccurate it is overall, but there are a few that have caught my notice.
I'm sure I'll end up missing ones, which bugs me, but I'll do my best to recount some examples that I can think of:
The Love Witch (2016) is a movie that I think presents a strikingly realistic portrayal of what magic can look like. It manages to show some of the ways one might use magic to great effect, without actually skewing into fantasy at all. Clearly, the magic shown isn't going to line up with every paradigm, and its not exactly a heady or spirit-based story, but I think it's a very real look at how ritual and magic is/can be approached by many folks in the modern day.
The Witch (2015) is, above all else, a great slow-burn horror film and an excellent period-piece. However, it also portrays quite an accurate conception of folkloric beliefs about Witchcraft in the 17th century, which inexorably inform the realities of modern Witchcraft traditions. It does just barely skew into fantasy horror, but the actual folkloric information being presented is quite sound.
A Dark Song (2016) is a film that portrays ceremonial magic realistically in many ways. Ultimately, it is still a supernatural horror film, but the bulk of the magic in the movie is based directly on the Abramelin Operation, which was interesting to see. A lot of the ways that the magic "takes shape" in the film feels real enough to me, too (though it certainly takes it to extremes at points, as horror movies are wont to do).
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson is a horror novel I much enjoyed when I read it a coulple years ago, but I also remember that it happens to contain small, but meaningful, instances of sympathetic magic within the story that I appreciated as a practitioner looking in. This one has been made into a movie as well.
Cunning Folk by Adam Nevill is one of the more realistic looks at magic—including the uncanny side of it—that I've come across. It's still definitely a horror story, first and foremost, but there's an oomph to the ritual and magic described therein that a lot of other similar fiction lacks—even when the ritual act being described isn't necessarily accurate in terms of historicality or my personal experience of the Craft.
The White People by Arthur Machen is a Welsh short horror story from the turn of the century, which I think is worth including here. There are elements and aspects of the story that feel surprisingly real in terms of Gloaming initiation and the Gloaming Spirits—though, of course, it takes creative liberties informed by the paranormal beliefs and trends of the time (1890s).
The Craft (1996) is a movie that I'm sure a lot of pagans have of nostalgia for in one way or another, myself included. I struggled with whether this movie should be here or in the Honorable Mention section, but I included it here in the end because a lot of the ways magic and ritual are presented in the film are accurate enough. I also think it did a fairly good job of capturing how it can feel to discover, revel in, and then become overwhelmed by magic. However, since it is a supernatural horror film, a lot of magic shown is portrayed more fantastically than the real thing, and there are aspects of the magic (rituals, entities, etc.) made up entirely for the sake of the story.
As implied above, there are also some pieces that, while largely inaccurate or too far into the realm of fantasy, still manage to succesfully capture some essence of realistic feeling magic in them. I will list those here as Honorable Mentions:
Practical Magic (1998) is another movie that I'm sure a lot of Pagans have nostalgia for in some way or another. I won't claim that it's a genuinely "accurate" representation of magic—and it certainly strays into outright fantasy at times—but there are little things throughout the movie that managed to ring a bell for me, as someone who grew up with magic in my family. I know this was originally a book, but I actually haven't read that as of yet, so I can't speak to it.
Pan's Labyrinth (2006) is a movie is squarely in the fantasy-horror genre to me, but even still, I include it here as an honorable mention because a lot of the lore depicted is drawn from real lore, and the overall ambience it manged to evoke strongly reminds me of some of my own experiences with chthonic journeying.
The Good Witch franchise isn't one I have ever actually watched any part of before, but I include it here because, oddly enough, multiple practitioners have mentioned to me that they think the magic is surprisingly realistic for a Hallmark series. As I understand it, the main character is a sort of local Wise Woman who helps the folk in her little town using things like folk-knowledge, remarkable intuition, and an uncanny ability to seemingly sway people and circumstances. Since I haven't seen it myself, my take on it may be somewhat lacking, (which is why I listed it as an honorable mention), but based on the description, it actually sounds like it may be one of the more realistic interpretations of magic on this list.
I know this is a strange addition, as it's not exactly magic, per se, but much of how Stephen King writes about psychic abilities like clairvoyance and healing throughout his works manages to touch on something all too familiar for me. I think, sometimes, that he may have known someone with the Sight and/or the Touch in his real life, as it comes up a lot in one shape or another in his writing.
As I said, I'm sure there's stuff I'm missing, but this at least a serviceable overview. I encourage others to share any other media that they think deserves a mention, too!

- he and paul had a (fighting the urge to say dachsund) beagle when they were together and his name is frank (full name frank-n-furter). his fav toy was a tennis ball :3
- the first person to suspect danny was gay was actually annie, bc he couldn't help but gossip with her (i take them as twins also?) and she was like i knew i smelt a queer
- he and gary newman(?) (the guy in the photo) were best friends in highschool, but when gary found out he was gay they stoped being friends. im torn between it being a friend turned bully situation or if he just backed away bc he was uncomfortable with it. they could also be exes idk hes only mentioned once
- janet would send over letters in the mail a few times a year with photos from back at home (photos including but not limited to: stuff martin grew in the garden, cool stuff at the museum she works at, photos of johnnie (w/ small notes from annie), and the trees in the fall)
- martin and danny used to go on runs together when he was in highschool, conversations were shallow if present at all
- i honestly dont think danny came out to anyone in his family, MAYBE janet if anyone but even then i doubt it. OH THAT CONNECTS TO THE GARY HC ok he got outed in senior year.

- danny likes folk music (and related subgenres) because I SAID SO his fav band was simon & garfunkel but had he made it to the 2000s itd be nickel creek and i dont care that im projecting
- autistic because i want him to be. i dont have reasoning for it beyond that and i dont need to
- had one (1) girlfriend in middle school which lasted maybe 3 months. they went to the movies once, went out to eat once, hugged after school once, and thats it
also ive been imagining 1986 rsl as baby danny and iiiiiii. sniff. whyd they have to include them as kids in the beginning of the movie BANGS ON THE FUCKING WALLS CAN ANYONE HEAR ME

Maybe it's because it's the Day of Heart and Hearth, the flight is already delayed by twelve hours, and the extra seat is under the name ‘Frumpkin.’ ...Or maybe it's because he only wants one person to make the trip with him, but Essek Thelyss is bound for an entirely different destination.
