I’m SO pumped to share the latest Patreon update for my game, College Craze – a branching NSFW visual novel where you play as an incoming female freshman, ready to make your mark in the seemingly-quiet town of Sugardale. hello!

i've been so inactive lately, i'm so sorry, things have been hectic which is why i am not as online frequently, be it tumblr or discord.

first of all, i would like to apologize to everyone who has been waiting for my updates and/or written stories that i promised i would write soon. to be honest, i have been so burnt out from genshin. while i do enjoy the game, it has been very tiring to keep up. i do still love the characters and the lore, it's just that i do not have the energy to continue playing as i often get dizzy from playing :[

it's also very tiring to keep updating every week as i am part of our student council and constantly have deadlines due, especially since i will be an incoming college freshman next academic year. i try to update every week but i do lose ideas from time to time and keep pushing myself to just put something out, which is something i dislike.

second, i will be closing this account for now. i don't know when i will come back or if i will ever come back. but if i do come back, i may probably just post short smaus or quick one-shots.

i have cleaned out this account so you will only be looking at my completed smaus. i opted to delete this account but some people hve told me that they often re-read my stories and i do not want to take that away from those of you who want to do the same. as of now, i will be in the process of cleaning out my account.

[INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT UNDER THE CUT!]

Q1. So, tell us a little bit about the projects you're working on!

I’m currently working on College Craze, it’s a NSFW female-protagonist college and dating sim I’ve been working on for nearly a year now. The game is set in the fictional college town of Sugardale, where you play an incoming freshman, and are thrust into the messy, hilarious, mysterious lives of your fellow college students and townies alike. In my game you can choose to study hard, work off campus, or party every weekend. Manage your grades, followers and bank account as you meet and interact with the 25 (and counting!) unique characters  of Sugardale.  

Create your own story and get into steamy situations, all while helping (or sabotaging) your friends, keeping secrets and revealing mysteries about the town's shady happenings.

Q2. What inspired you to start writing your current project(s)? Why in Interactive Fiction?

I played a similar NSFW female-protagonist game called Good Girl Gone Bad,  as well as a few others like Female Agent. When playing those games, I really got into them, I loved the idea of living a different life vicariously through a game, and seeing my choices and decisions play out differently on each playthrough. But as a black woman, I typically did not see myself represented in those games, or at least an outlet to represent myself as I’d like to. I also wanted to contribute to the niche genre of NSFW Female protagonist games, and offer a perspective that wasn’t solely focused on codifying the sexual behavior of the main character. In some games, the moment you decide to sleep with someone, is the moment your character becomes labeled negatively or is forced to make “bad” choices throughout the game, and I really didn’t wanna focus on that. You can make decisions that gratify you sexually without necessarily being punished for it. 

My game being an interactive fiction game allows for there to be so many complex reactions and perspectives within your playthroughs, and I think it allows for high replayability. I love the idea of having agency over what your story can be, and so IF was an easy decision for me to make with College Craze.

Q3. What is the most rewarding part of creating for you? The most challenging?

The most rewarding part is hearing from people who’ve played the game that they are able to see their friends in certain characters, or that they can relate to some characters over others, and speak about them as if they are real people. The town of Sugardale is so alive and vivid in my head, and so to be able to share that and have people feel the realness, and appreciate the world building I have done is SO gratifying. I also appreciate the fact that people really can see themselves in the game, that is something I lacked when playing other games, so I’m glad I’ve been able to offer at least a little bit of customization with skin tones, hair styles and hair colors to bridge that gap.

The most challenging part is doing everything on my own. This is my first game, so there’s the hurdle of just managing all that comes with that on top of drawing CGs with variations for every customizable character, writing the branches and keeping track of over 900(and counting!) choices and decisions you can make is a lot of work. I think once I’ve gotten enough support, I’d like to get some help with the artwork so I can focus on writing solely, but until then I’m truckin’ along.

Q4. Does your heritage have a lot of influence in your work? How?

I’d say so, yeah. Like I’d mentioned before, being a black woman and not seeing myself in the games I played was a bummer, and it was a driving force behind me making this game in the first place. Another aspect to that was also whenever a black character was present in the games, they would be highly fetishized, or would fit into harmful stereotypes. I wanted to create a game where there were all types of people from different backgrounds that ran the gamut. In my game I have a black man who’s highly intelligent and into the sciences, there’s a black woman who is insecure and kinda bitchy, there’s another black man who is from a rougher side of town and on the surface may seem to fit stereotypes, but he isn’t defined by it. I came from a rough neighborhood and saw the stereotypical shit we all see on TV and movies, but the difference is that those forms of media never depicted those characters with depth, never gave them grace, and only used them as tools in an overarching narrative that never served the purpose of humanizing them. Black people are not a monolith, we are able to be as varied and different as everyone else, and my game really aims to do that with every character.

Q5. What is something you would like to see more of in IF works and in the community?

I’d like to see long, sprawling passion projects like my own. I know nowadays our hobbies have been heavily commodified (Im a victim of it as well, lol) but I do miss the idea of making things for the sake of it and just enjoying the process of making it. I don’t have a timeline of when I want to stop developing my game (other than the plot I have outlined). I like the idea of creating this world, and adding to it and growing with it without the pressure of “making it big” and being a “commercial success”. Short projects are cool and they have a place, but let's see that huge magnum opus. I wanna get lost in your world, for hours, days, whatever.

Q6. Describe something that you love about your work or are excited about sharing in your story.

I love love love the mystery I have been building in the background of the plot so far. One thing that I think is really cool is hearing fan theories about what's been going on, and it's so frustrating cause I wanna jump in with them and be like “oh that’s such a great theory, but wait until you find out xyz”. But of course, I can’t do that, cause I’ll ruin it all lol. But I think I’ve done a really good job with characterization, that when the mystery starts to unravel and we start connecting the dots and the people in town, people will really be into it and (hopefully) surprised by a few reveals.

Q7. Any advice to give to your fellow writers?

Just write. I know it's overstated and probably doesn’t sound helpful, but I’ll tell you that it's IMPOSSIBLE to edit a blank page. Get something out, get anything out, just write, even if you think it doesn’t sound pretty enough or isn’t hitting the chord you want it to, just do it. And never go back until you hit a milestone you set at the beginning.

One thing I like to do is say I’m going to write until I reach in-game Saturday night, and only when I reach that point will I go back and try to spruce up what I can. If I get stuck while writing a scene on the way to that milestone, I’ll literally write what I want to happen in that space and keep it going. Don’t get in your own way.

any advise for someone starting uni? :/

(okay i had a REALLY weird freshman year bc it was all online due to covid and my uni experience before that was at a community college and i was young and did not make any friends at all there but here’s the advice i do have !!) i know everyone says this but GOOOO to office hours. become besties with some of ur profs. if you don’t like them don’t waste your time don’t worry about being a sycophant but you will like some of them, and cultivate these relationships !!! also the first 3-5 weeks of a term, make a really good impression, work really hard, and as well as you can. after that if you’re like me you’ll start forgetting to turn things in and get overwhelmed but the profs hopefully will have an idea of you as very motivated and be more forgiving<3 hopefully<3 as long as you stay in communication with them—you have to show you care for them to care<3 and ofc like try all term long but the beginning and the end is where it matters most. if you get behind it’s not the end of the world, but don’t let it snowball !! i’ve never managed to not let my missing assignments snowball but if you can manage to not do this you’re already 80% of the way there huge congrats. and if not it’s ok i always fuck up and usually it’s possible to dig yourself out of the hole at the end as long as you’re still learning the content the whole time !! but omg please don’t read this and think it’s fine to get behind because it sucks and it’s stressful and don’t be me. but if you are me then also it will be okay <3

also it will take effort but reach out to people esp in the beginning! in general the beginning of your year and of each term is where you’ll put in the most intentional effort to make social connections. also there’s probably an incoming freshman ig account for your university that features pics of students and bios that they send in and maybe also a groupme or a discord or a loopchat, PARTICIPATE IN THESE. and if there isn’t a gc or ig, start one!!! and also stalk the ig acc and just dm people you wanna be friends with you have nothing to lose <3

oh and take the weird classes! the what the fuck is that even about classes! esp if you don’t know for sure what u want to study, try things. <3 but also be careful bc you can’t do this forever; also do lots of degree planning for multiple different degree options and keep in mind the general degree pre-reqs you have to do. even if you don’t Take those pre-reqs the term your plan says you “should”, having it in the back of your mind will help keep you on track. also i have literally done 2 quarters at a 4 year uni and they were both online so take all this with a grain of salt but this is what has helped & worked for me <3 3 good luck !!!!

melody haneul park was born and raised in toronto, canada. her father, park kyungsoo, was originally born in busan, south korea, and her mother, susan park, was also born and raised in canada. her parents had met at work after kyungsoo had transferred to toronto for his new job. they quickly fell in love, didn’t hesitate and got married. soon enough susan was pregnant with their little melody.

after mel was born, her parents decided not to have any more kids. one was enough for them, especially because neither of them wanted to stop working-- kyungsoo was due for a promotion to a senior position role in this corporate org, and susan was too. because of this, melody quickly fell into the world of daycares and nannies.

throughout elementary and middle school, melody was an extremely shy kid. she didn’t have many friends and kept to herself.

in high school, she tried to open up a little more-- she joined the anime and video games club, since she was absolutely obsessed with everything technology-- her parents gifted her a pc gaming set-up and she fell in love with the world of gaming ever since. her first game was mortal kombat and from there on she played every type of game you could imagine. realistically, she had more friends online than she did at school, so her video games were her escape.

throughout high school, she learned some basic coding skills (and also how to hack certain systems, but that’s lowkey a secret) and realized that she eventually wanted to work in the world of it or some form of technology, maybe video game design?.. 

her father was all for it, but her mother was skeptical. even though she was, melody still graduated and decided to major in video game design at her local college.

in her freshman year, she was semi bored of her classes-- so she joined extra curriculars, like the gaming club, anime club again, etc.. but she was still bored, so she then decided to start up a twitch streaming account. she would stream gameplay of an abundance of games, but the video game that got her the most views and caused her to go viral was overwatch. 

once her following was getting bigger and bigger (on both twitch and youtube), and she was gaining a large amount of income from it, she started to wonder if video game design was still what she wanted to do..

after some thinking, she decided to drop out from college after her freshman year. while her parents were both extremely disappointed in her decision, they didn’t fully understand how much money she truly could make from streaming and making youtube videos. 

after dropping out, she decided to pack everything and move to la. again, of course her parents were disappointed, but they tried their hardest to support her.

flash forward about two years, and melody aka melodiesgaming, is now in the top ten channels with the most subscribers, and top ten in twitch as well. right now she is streaming a lot of animal crossing new horizons gameplay, along with silly games like fall guys and overwatch every now and then. most of her youtube videos are about playing obscure small games that people had never heard of. 

one thing about her and fame that don’t mesh well is that she’s.. not very good at socializing lol? like in interviews and at big events its so obvious shes uncomfortable and anxious and her agent tries to help her with it but ... eh lol. she was diagnosed with anxiety at a young age which also contributes. 

but when she’s streaming or interacting with her fans, she’s super outgoing and hilarious!

she is also lowkey naive, falls too fast, all that jazz... 

she claims that she is straight but she is a closeted bisexual. she has no idea when she’ll be comfortable enough to come out to the public but hopefully that’s soon.

also, she’s insecure about not being a good enough streamer/youtuber when she clearly is because why would she have this many subs yknow?? also, esp bc she lives in la she feels like she has to keep up with appearances and that’s a big insecurity as well.

sO cassidy is the oldest of five kiddos. she’s got a twin brother that she’s older than by ten minutes, a half brother (13), and two half sisters (15 and 11)

cass and her twin brother were born in ashmont, ct to rebecca turner and an unknown man (to the twins anyway). their mom always claims it was a fling. he was a musician, and he had left before she found out she was pregnant.

so here you have a 20 year old suddenly now raising twins on her own. she actually did pretty well for the most part and raised her kids to be gr8

cassidy doesn’t ever TRY to be bitter abt it but sometimes it just,,,, happens??? and she hates herself for it bc he didn’t know but how do u leave a pregnant lady on her own idk

when the twins were four, their mom met a  man and eventually married him!! they had three kids over the next few years, which now upped the kiddo count to 5 and they were one big happy family!!!

tbh cass saw him as her father, since he was around from when she was really young, and he was a big part of her life growing up

around this time she met daisey and the two became fast friends!! they spent basically every day together throughout their childhood (more on that later)

but THEN, tragedy struck (bc why would i let my muses be happy who do u think i am)

when cassidy was 15, her step father unexpectedly passed away, and the family was left without any direction. they didn’t have a lot of money to begin with, but now one income to feed six people was not an easy task.

with the combination of grieving, money stress, and probably fear,  her mother fell into a deep depression, finding a coping mechanism through booze. she lost her job along the way, and slowly the money that was left was fading fast.

cass and her twin brother basically took that as a sign that they needed to take responsibility to keep their family alive, so they immediately took up any jobs they could find, just to keep money coming in.

most of their paychecks went into a bank account that would help the kids get by, since their mother didn’t do much of anything to help anymore.

this situation really tore up cassidy’s relationship with her mom, and most of what she feels is resentment and anger towards her mother, even though her brother doesn’t have that same opinion.

around this same time, her friendship with daisey started to fall apart, quicker than she would have imagined. it was a natural drift, coming apart due to daisey’s increasing popularity and cassidy’s lackthereof. nothing was malicious, which made it even tougher. she still misses that friendship sometimes, despite what others say about the girl.

throughout high school, cassidy worked her hardest to get high grades, because she knew that without a scholarship she wouldn’t be able to afford college otherwise.

she hardly got anything below an A, was involved in everything club that she could, and graduated as the salutatorian. she worked hard enough to receive enough scholarship money to cover most of her cost in school.

she’s currently in her final year as a musical theatre major!!!! she’s a nerd abt it too don’t open up a conversation about theatre unless u wanna lose a few hours

(here’s where i start pulling things directly from  my app so they’re getting longer)

cassidy has been involved in so many creative arts let me tell u. she discovered her first love in theatre at seven years old, which was soon followed by singing and dance lessons within the year. throughout the next decade, her love for the performing and the visual arts only grew over time, and some new passions were also discovered.

she also found that she had a talent in photography and writing when she was in high school after a friend convinced her to sign up for the yearbook. what started as just a way to gain another credit and add to her college applications turned into a passion that she would continuously want to pursue. it wouldn’t be her career, but she’d always find a way to keep doing it.

because of these passions, it was no surprise that cassidy would take to social media as another creative outlet. what started out as just posting videos from theatre performances on youtube began to grow into something more, and before she knew it, she was a recognizable name on the platform. she hadn’t planned on becoming an internet personality, but  now that she has, she wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

cassidy has been actively posting videos on youtube for about three years now (essentially since starting college), and her channel currently has about 120 thousand subscribers. her channel mainly focuses on theatre related content, vlogs, advice, and a handful of videos related to bullet journaling and challenges.

a lil hc- cass’ channel is basically a  mix of katherine steele and jenna marbles

she also has a pretty strong following on instagram, so she’s all abt aesthetics and making her page always look neat and pretty

cassidy can be described as a walking advice column disguised as a mom friend. she is incredibly warm and welcoming, (which can even be seen in the clothes she chooses to wear), and she always has a kind word or smile to give anyone that crosses her path on a day to day basis.

she has been known in the past to strike up a conversation with a stranger, just because she liked their shirt, or they share the same coffee order. if someone comes up to her on the street needing advice, she’ll give it to them in a heartbeat, even it’s a simple “dump him”. she’d probably give you the shirt off her back if you asked her nicely (pls ask nicely)

she doesn’t like to make a habit of sharing some of the deep dark past things that were mentioned earlier, mainly because of how many of her classmates come from money. because of this, she’s never truly felt like she fit in amongst the wealthy community that attends and surrounds the university. she’s always trying to fit in with her peers, but nothing ever seems to be enough.

ever since the news of daisey’s disappearance, cassidy has truly been at a loss for words, or even thoughts. for almost fifteen years of her life, there had hardly been a day where cassidy  wouldn’t see daisey’s face, even in passing between classes after their friendship ended. since then, she still looks for her as she walks around campus, as if the whole thing was a dream, and daisey rutherford is still around and running st. etienne university.
