Hi guys! I am Lem, the person who runs this roleplay blog. This blog is part of the bursonaverse thing created by @emeraldsandpearlsxx, and is made just for fun.

This blog is "partnered up" with @coldarg , who is another argbur blog that's also part of the bursonaverse, our blogs might eventually interact.

My main blog is @ghostlem, I am a 15 years old Chilean. (fun fact I'm also an argbur fictionkin)

This is a "Canon-divergent" roleplay (canon-divergent means that it follows the Canon pre-established, but also adds some changes, or at least that's what I understand from the word).

When I'm talking OOC (out of character) I will write with // on both sides in a specific way.

I really like your idea on em both being rich kids lol, very interesting bc to me personally Billy is actually pretty poor. idk I mean I know we don’t see Tatum’s house or Randy’s either but the fact we never see a single thing about Billy’s sounds odd to me. Vs Tatum who has her own car and Randy with his odd collection of colorful (probably expensive) shoes.

there’s also the fact he’s on his dad’s income only who, from the real brief looks we got at him and the fact he slept with the town’s most likely ‘wellknown’ prostitute if that makes any sense, feels like some sleazy, struggling lawyer type.

I know in lore or whatever (wiki page lol) his dad is described as a powerful Woodsboro lawyer but considering this is the same lore that has Billy getting someone pregnant and can’t even decide the ages of the main cast I’m looking at in-movie evidence instead.

the only thing that kinda tips it to him being richer imo is the mobile phone he drops, or more precisely his dad’s phone - but even then it’s again his dad’s and not his own one. his dad who likely would need it as a work expense, but can’t afford to buy his son one and doesn’t care to.

anyway that’s my entire crackpot theory (I have even more but I wanted to spare your ask box from this already long thing) just to say that I really like your take on him being richer too

Hey thanks! My own personal theory dump below:

I've seen a lot of takes with poorer Billy. Tbh I think based on what we see in the movie it can go either way, we just don't really have the info. Also, not to nitpick, but we do see Tatums house, that's where Sid sleeps over after Billy gets arrested and there's also a breakfast scene there in the morning.

To me, Randy is actually probably the least wealthy member of the group, he's the only one that we know has a job, and the shoe brands (mostly hush puppies) he's wearing mostly wouldn't have been super expensive.

In my opinion we don't see much of Billy's home life because we don't see much of the real Billy at all until the reveal at the end. We only see as much of Stu's as we do because the finale takes place in his house, and imo more of Billy's home life would have made him more obvious. I have to imagine his room is full of horror merch lmao.

Honestly I don't really read Hank the same way as you do though. Maureen isn't a prostitute (not that theres anything wrong with sex work), she's a housewife with an extremely wealthy husband (aside from Stu's house Sid's seems like the biggest), so I don't really feel like the affair says anything about relative wealth.

In terms of the lore, tbh I don't actually think it's totally out of character for Billy to get a random girl pregnant. I chose not to do this in Debaser because I've decided to not make Sam canon in my own work, but I could totally see him deciding he needed to "practice" with some girl before Sid. I think he probably hooked up with her at a party, had a mediocre time, and never spoke to her again because he's an asshole. Not at all joking this seems fully in character for me.

My personal hc is that Nancy was a housewife, so Hank would have been carrying the family on a single income anyways. Even if we assume that she was working before and they lost that income, then they would have only been on a lower income for a little over a year, so I don't really see that as the makings of a poor Billy.

Also, we know from scream 2 that Nancy had enough money to get major plastic surgeries (enough that she was unrecognizable to Sid) and also paid for Mickey's tuition, so that's going to be hundreds of thousands of dollars. On top of that she's not working during the events of scream 2, she's doing the fake reporter thing. Based on that Nancy Loomis is either a rich girl by birth, someone who had an extremely high paying job before, or she got a lot of money in the divorce, which would require Hank to have had a lot of money to give.

In terms of the cell phone thing- cells weren't super common for teens to have in the 90's, as far as I can tell one of the first movies that shows teens having cell phones is clueless, which came out in 1995, so it doesn't necessarily say much to me that Billy doesn't have his own in the movie.

In terms of Hank, when we see him he's wearing a nice suit, it's up to date with trends in 96', meaning he's got enough money to be staying up to date with his wardrobe and suits aren't cheap. Other wardrobe hints include Billy's white shirt being Calvin Klein, not a cheap brand for a plain white shirt. If Billy is less wealthy he's more likely to be wearing Hanes. At the very least I, a relatively poor person, am buying the cheapest white shirts I can. I get that shit in a five pack from walmart, I don't have the expendable income to spend over 50$ for a single shirt.

All of this is to say that at least for me it doesn't make a lot of sense for Billy to be poor, especially with what we know about his mom in movie 2. But thats not why I chose to make him rich.

Why Sharp chose to make Billy a rich kid:

So i've seen a number of takes where Billy is poor and Hank is extremely abusive, and that was something I wanted to avoid. In some cases this can feel to me like the poverty and physical abuse is meant to explain his behaviour and that feels a little oversimplified. I specifically chose to make Hank neglectful, judgmental and argumentative (emotionally abusive) but not physically abusive. It doesn't always take more than that to fuck someone up, and I also wanted Billy's rage to come from somewhere else, to be a little less obviously justified. His life isn't easy, but he still has privilege.

In terms of the wealth issue, Billy's character reads more as an entitled rich kid to me. He's out of touch with the emotional stakes of the things he's doing and beyond that he's got the time and energy to plan and carry out a murder spree like this.

I personally chose to write Billy as someone who doesn't experience a lot of consequences for his actions because his dad can pay them away, which he does because Billy has an effect on his professional image as a lawyer. This was particularly important for my trans Billy storyline, because the money would be necessary both to access black market hormones (would have been near impossible to get them prescribed at the time) and also because Hank would have needed to bribe the cops and the hospital to keep quiet so Billy wouldn't be outed.

Aside from that though I just think the rich boy no consequences thing plays well into how unafraid he is about what he's doing and how casually he does it. All of this is just my take though! There are lots of ways to read the movie and I made character choices about him so that they fit into the narrative I'm crafting, doesn't need to work for anyone else.

Y'all need to stop reblogging that Travel Bible artifact blog (museum-of-artifacts).

It's not informative, links back to a Buzzfeed-style listicle that may not even have information on the object in the post (if it links to a specific article listicle at all), and is a Christian travel blog that's a discount Buzzfeed at best.

The images are also lifted off places such as Reddit, Buzzfeed, Twitter, and Tumblr from the images I reverse searched, some from years ago. I actually skimmed over a lot of the posts that made it to my dash because I saw them years ago (or at least the images) but that blog re-posted them within the past year or two.

They're also taking posts from the subreddit r/ArtefactPorn that are from different users so either they have a mountain of sockpuppets or they're taking what others post, passing it off as their own, and directing people to their own site if they want more information on the artifact even though most of the time, from what I've checked, it links to a listicle that has no info on the object and sometimes just links to a landing page.

Because sometimes the artifact they post isn't even on the site despite linking back to the site as if it is.

Speaking of the subreddit, all the links on the right side link to the pre-TB sites and the founder of the subreddit tells people to "Read More" by linking the TB site rather than answering questions. Both also have links to give MoA money. I'm all for paying creators and scientists but I do not support paying someone who steals someone else's work to pass off as their own.

Finding photos of artifacts interesting or pretty is fine! But find a better source than that blog as it has zero sources or further information on the objects, tries to direct you to their own site for further information when much of the time there's literally nothing there, and tries to get money out of from you. The click-throughs to their website also bump up stats and they say they have monetized ads on it so, again, they get money from work they stole.

(I say they say because that's what it says in their privacy policy and I'm not disabling all my ad- and script-blocks on my main computer for a site that's already shady, goes against Web Design 101, and one of the home links is for .localhost instead of the site itself, but I do see tracking sites and an ad-provider still being blocked so I have no reason to doubt they have ads on their site.)

Oh and TB posts AI "art" on their Facebook page and tries to pass it off as real photographs. That in and of itself should discredit any artifacts or information about said artifacts from that blog as it cannot be trusted.

Pinepaw: Pinepaw is definitely a gatherer, though I don't know if I'd say he's overdoing chaos...he doesn't have a need for new things as much as he has a need for individuality.

This might not SEEM like the case since he's not an individualist per say, but when reading the comic you can tell he goes away from the tribe and focuses on his wants, he is looking for answers not FOR the tribe but purely because he wants to know.

This can be seen in many scenarios, but mainly in him wanting to leave the group. Someone who's tribe over self and an organizer would prefer to stick to traditions, like Cootstorm, they would hear the cries of the past barrenclan warriors and want to stay, because that is what the tribe and tradition wants.

This leads me to either INTP or INFP, though I think he's more of an INFP. He doesn't care as much about efficiency, even if he is logical he prefers to think about his values

Also idk if it's necessary to say ne>se he's clearly intuitive, moreso coming to as many conclusions as possible instead of paying close attention to the surroundings

Fe is definitely her main function, the entire story she's battling with herself over gaining approval with her mentor, meaning she neglects a cay like Pinepaw who is more individualistic and doesn't really want to partake in tribe beliefs. She definitely gets healthier as the story goes on, but she's a good example of a tribe savior being selfish.

im high so i started eating chocolate and it turned into me investigating whether ghirardelli ethically sources their chocolates or not

So I got some ghirardelli chocolates at the store on a whim, which is not the type of purchase I usually make but, hey, i wanted a tasty treat

i've gotten into a habit usually of checking chocolate i buy to see if the packaging at least says it's ethically source or if it's on the list of trusted chocolate companies i've seen, just cause like.. i don't fuck with supporting fucking slave labor

but i bought the ghiradellis without checking cause i just wanted something that tasted good in that moment

so i'm eatin em and i decided to look at the packaging now to see if it said anything about where the chocolate was sourced, but all I could see was that the chocolate was "sustainably" sourced, not "ethically" sourced, which is what most packaging usually says

and i probably would have just ignored it but i'm stoned and not busy and I have time to kill and there was a link that said "read more at ghirardelli.com/sustainability" so I said fuck it, I do want to know more actually, why did you say "sustainably" instead of "ethically" 🤨

So I go to the website, and it's mostly self congratulatory shit, but the main focus of the page isn't even on what makes their cocoa "sustainable" it just talks about how they value high quality cocoa and that most of their chocolate is now sourced through their "sustainable" Farming Program, but no actual info on what that Farming Program is or what makes it sustainable or why they are proud of it

so there's another link to read more about the Farming Program, and it takes you to a whole new website to read about what they do

The home page of the website is kind of vague in describing what exactly the Farming Program is and how it works, and has yet more large swaths of text just dedicated to boasting about how high the percentage of their chocolates are sourced through this program

so already I'm like.. suspicious. I'm high so I'm extra suspicious because I'm reading way too into everything, but also bear in mind that the website uses exclusively pictures of like POC, particularly black Africans and like jungles and stuff, but the company is a Swiss chocolate company. It is owned by Europeans. And after reading about the program just on the home page it seems like they are essentially employing these people as workers, it talks about how they train farmers to harvest cocoa and use sustainable practices and stuff and also "provide assistance in other ways" without actually going into detail about what that assistance is. Put to me it sounds like these farmers don't really have a say in the price of their own goods, like it doesn't necessarily say that Lindt & Sprüngli (parent company) owns the farms, but it doesn't say anything about like.. what they are actually paying these people or what they're even doing that is "sustainable". The way that everything is worded to me just reeks of like.. good optics, like they're saying a bunch of words that sound nice without ever actually saying "we care about our workers as human beings and compensate them fairly"

So I keep scrolling and I see some related articles (written by the site itself) that go into detail on certain aspects of the program, and one of them is titled "What does income diversification mean?" and that phrase caught my attention, like okay we are talking about the farmer's income now, maybe they'll actually go into detail about how they are compensating them. Still not plussed about the fact that I was told to go to "ghiradelli.com/sustainability" for more info and I am now 3 different pages in trying to find out more information about this program they're fucking boasting about but not actually giving details on and the first paragraph of the article is this: "One of the goals of the Lindt & Sprüngli Farming Program is to create resilient livelihoods for farmers, their families and the communities. Therefore, in addition to training and education on cocoa cultivation, our field staff also support the farmers in other areas that help them in their daily lives. I have a hunch...) so you are now bragging about how you teach them how to do other things so they can support themselves the rest of the year. but you're not buying those things from them, they have to sell them to someone else you're just gonna teach them how to do it... okay...

Like. I get that crops are seasonal and you could argue that it's fair to only pay someone for work while they are doing that work, butttttttttt... idk man. A company like Lindt & Sprüngli I KNOW makes a fuck ton of money, and I would be willing to bet that the farmers are not setting their prices for their goods themselves, and that they can only sell their cocoa to Lindt & Sprüngli, so even if they don't own the farm.. they kinda basically own the farm.. and they brag about how they're teaching people how to farm, and I just feel like?? They have a vested interest in teaching the farmers themselves because if they are not already farmers and they don't know anything and they aren't learning from another independent farmer, they might not know whether they're being ripped off or not. I mean I certainly wouldn't, I don't know what are good prices to sell produce at, I've never done it. But all that aside, what if I just happen to be of the opinion that if you make enough fucking money and all you do is sell chocolate, that's your entire business model, maybe you should be paying your fucking farmers enough money that they don't have to LEARN OTHER SKILLS THAT YOU ALSO TEACH THEM TO MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO LIVE???? Like maybe you should just fucking pay them enough for the whole year.

When Langdon arrives, however, he quickly realizes that something is amiss, Peter has been kidnapped. Minutes later, a disturbing object is discovered, with 5 symbols engraved on it. Recognizing it as an ancient invitation, Langdon's only hope to rescue his mentor is to follow wherever this invitation leads him.

This isn't the first time I've read one of Dan Brown's novels, however the last time was when I was very young so I'm basically going into this book blind. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this though, because I remember not enjoying Brown's books, although to be fair, age comes with change. Although I should've read one of the earlier books in the series, I'm glad that "The Lost Symbol" doesn't require a prior reading of them, though there are some references to the previous entries.

The most prominent part about "The Lost Symbol" was the tidbits of info about history, science, architecture, art, religion, geography, etc. It was really interesting to read, was probably what drew me into the story, and seeing how it all fits into the story. It kinda felt like a social studies lesson, to be honest. As to whether or not said pieces of trivia are factual or completely fictitious I do not know, but I do know that it sounds believable enough to give off the impression that it's true. The book also bounces around between different characters' perspectives, which I felt made reading the book a more enjoyable read.

Dan Brown's ability to pique your curiosity and have you turn each page with interest truly is amazing. I found myself looking forward to the next chapter each and every time. My favorite part of the story is Mal'akh, the main antagonist, chasing Katherine Solomon, younger sister of Peter, inside of a pitch-black lab called "Pod 05". I'd feel my heart pulsing quickly throughout, and seeing the perspectives of both hunter and hunted makes it all the more fun. I didn't find any glaring problems with the story while reading, but in hindsight, there were a couple of problems that impacted the quality of the story. 

The bulk of the writing was made up of Langdon or some other character reciting trivia from wikipedia relevant to the plot. While the exposition was interesting, it resulted in less time for the story to progress, and the book ends up becoming half thriller-mystery novel/half history lesson. Personally, I enjoyed it, but if you're looking for a novel and not a sudden trip back to school, you may want to think twice before reading this.

The characters, in my opinion, were good, but there were some moments where they were behaving out-of-character. An example being  Robert Langdon acting like he isn't used to strange events happening, even though the book makes references to his past adventures. One thing surprised me however, and that was how easily I found myself becoming attached to minor characters that we only get to see for a small portion of the book. In general, I found the characters to be both believable, and inconsistent.

Even if "The Lost Symbol" suffers from inconsistent characters and being more encyclopedia than fiction novel, it makes up for it with a great reading experience that keeps you paying attention. If you enjoy thrilling mysteries, learning about history, or just want to read something fun, this should be on your radar. After I finish reading some of the books in my TBR, I'll be sure to read the other entries in the series.

🔐 Why You (Probably) Don't Need A VPN

A rant by a software engineer sick of VPN ads from her favourite YouTubers

TL;DR:

Here are some legitimate reasons the average internet user might want to use a VPN:

To connect to their company's internal network

To bypass the Great Firewall of China (or other types of website blocks at country or organisation level)

To watch Netflix etc as if you were in another country

Here are absolutely rubbish reasons to use a VPN:

Privacy

And today, I'll tell you why.

Hang on, won't a VPN stop hackers from stealing my passwords?

I mean, it does encrypt the web traffic coming from your device.

You know what else encrypts web traffic coming from your device? Your browser.

Yes, in the year 2021, pretty much all websites on the internet are accessed over HTTPS. The "S" stands for "secure", as in "your request will be securely encrypted". If your browser is using HTTPS, nobody can capture the data you're sending over the internet. More detail in the "I like too much detail" section at the bottom of this post.

It's very easy to check if you are using HTTPS by looking at your URL bar. In most browsers, it will have a lock on it if secure:

But isn't moar encryption better? What if somebody breaks HTTPS?

For starters, nobody's breaking your HTTPS, and there isn't any benefit from double encrypting. This is because of the maths behind encryption/decryption!

Encryption works kinda like a lock and key, except the lock is maths and the key is a special number only known to the person allowed to unlock the information.

The important thing is, without the key, all the locked data looks like complete and utter garbage. Completely unusable. Barely distinguishable from random noise. There's absolutely no way to tell what the original data was.

The other important thing is that the key is nearly unguessable. As in, with current technology, will generally take more than the lifetime of the universe to guess by chance. And when technology gets faster, we just make the numbers bigger again until they're once again secure.

For any major website you use, they will use a strong encryption algorithm (ie lock) with big numbers so your keys will be strong enough to withstand an attack. This means your data is safe as long as that lock icon is in your URL bar.

A VPN will not make the existing garble any more garbled. The extra $10/month or whatever you're paying for does not buy you any extra protection.

Something something viruses

How's a VPN going to stop viruses? It controls the path your internet traffic takes, not the content that gets sent down that path. I guess it could block some known virus-giving hosts? But if it's known to the VPN provider, it's probably also known to the built-in antivirus on your computer who can block it for you.

(Oh yeah, 3rd party antivirus is another thing that's not worth paying for these days. Microsoft's built-in Windows Defender is as good as the third party options, and something something Macs don't get viruses easily because of how they're architected.)

Honestly though, keep your software up to date, don't click on anything suspicious, don't open files from sources you don't trust, and you'll be right most of the time.

And keep your software up to date. Then update your software. Hey, did I mention keeping your stuff updated? Update! Now! It only takes a few minutes. Please update to the latest version of your software I'm begging you. It's the number 1 way to protect yourself from viruses and other malware. Most major software attacks could have been prevented if people just updated their damn software!

But my ISP is spying on me!

Ok, it is true that there are TWO bits of data that HTTPS can't and won't hide. Those are:

The source of a request (your IP)

What website that request is going to (the website's IP)

These are the bits of information that routers use to know where to send your data, so of course they can't be hidden as the data is moving across the internet. And people can see that information very easily if they want to.

Note: this will show which website you're going to, but not which page you're looking at, and not the content of that page. So it will show that you were on Tumblr, but will not show anyone that you're still reading SuperWhoLock content in 2021.

It's this source/destination information that VPNs hide, which is why they can be used to bypass website blocks and region locks.

By using a VPN, those sniffing traffic on your side of the VPN will just show you connecting to the VPN, not the actual website you want. That means you can read AO3 at work/school without your boss/teachers knowing (unless they look over your shoulder of course).

As for those sniffing on the websites end, including the website itself, they will see the VPN as the source of the connection, not you. So if you're in the US and using a VPN node in the UK, Netflix will see you as being in the UK and show you their British library rather than the American one.

If this is what you're using a VPN for and you think the price is fair, then by all means keep doing it! This is 100% what VPNs are good for.

HOWEVER, and this is a big "however", if it's your ISP you're trying to hide your internet traffic from, then you will want to think twice before using a VPN.

Let me put it this way. Without a VPN, your ISP knows every website you connect to and when. With a VPN, do you know who has that exact same information? The VPN provider. Sure, many claim to not keep logs, but do you really trust the people asking for you to send them all your data for a fee to not just turn around and sell your data on for a profit, or worse?

In effect, you're trading one snooper for another. One snooper is heavily regulated, in many jurisdictions must obey net neutrality, and is already getting a big fee from you regardless of where you browse. The other isn't. Again, it's all a matter of who you trust more.

For me personally, I trust my ISP more than a random VPN provider, if for no other reason than my ISP is an old enough company with enough inertia and incompetence that I don't think they could organise to sell my data even if they wanted to. And with the amount of money I'm paying them per month, they've only got everything to lose if they broke consumer trust by on-selling that data. So yeah, I trust my ISP more with my privacy than the random VPN company.

But my VPN comes with a password manager!

Password managers are great. I 100% recommend you use a password manager. If there's one thing you could do right now to improve your security (other than updating your software, speaking of, have you updated yet?), it's getting and using a password manager.

Password managers also come for free.

I'm currently using LastPass free, but am planning to switch after they did a bad capitalism and only let their free accounts access either laptop or mobile but not both now. I personally am planning to move to Bitwarden on friends' recommendation since it's not only free but open source and available across devices. I also have friends who use passbolt and enjoy it, which is also free and open source, but it's also a bit DIY to set up. Great if you like tinkering though! And there are probably many other options out there if you do a bit of googling.

So, yeah, please use a password manager, but don't pay for it unless you actually have use for the extra features.

No I really need to hide my internet activity from everybody for reasons

In this case, you're probably looking for TOR. TOR is basically untraceable. It's also a terrible user experience for the most part because of this, so I'd only recommend it if you need it, such as if you're trying to escape the Great Firewall. But please don't use it for Bad Crimes. I am not to be held liable for any crime committed using information learned from this post.

I like too much detail

Ahhh, so you're the type of person who doesn't get turned off by long explanations I see. Well, here's a little more info on the stuff I oversimplified in the main post about encryption. Uhh, words get bigger and more jargony in this section.

So first oversimplification: the assumption that all web traffic is either HTTP or HTTPS. This isn't exactly true. There are many other application layer internet standards out there, such as ssh, ftp, websockets, and all the proprietary standards certain companies use for stuff such as streaming and video conferencing. Some of these are secure, using TLS or some other security algorithm under the hood, and some of them aren't.

But most of the web requests you care about are HTTP/HTTPS calls. As for the rest, if they come from a company of a decent size that hasn't been hacked off the face of the planet already, they're probably also secure. In other words, you don't need to worry about it.

Next, we've already said that encryption works as a lock and a key, where the lock is a maths formula and the key is a number. But how do we get that key to lock and unlock the data?

Well, to answer that, we first need to talk about the two different types of encryption: symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetric encryption such as AES uses the same key to both encrypt and decrypt data, whereas asymmetric encryption such as RSA uses a different key to encode and decode.

For the sake of my writing, we're going to call the person encrypting Alice, the person decrypting Bob, and the eavesdropper trying to break our communications Eve from now on. These are standard names in crypto FYI. Also, crypto is short for cryptography not cryptocurrencies. Get your Bitcoin and Etherium outta here!

Sorry if things start getting incoherent. I'm tired. It's after 1am now.

So first, how do we get the key from symmetric crypto? This is probably the easier place to start. Well, you need a number, any number of sufficient size, that both Alice and Bob know. There are many ways you could share this number. They could decide it when they meet in person. They could send it to each other using carrier pigeons. Or they could radio it via morse code. But those aren't convenient, and somebody could intercept the number and use it to read all their messages.

So what we use instead is a super clever algorithm called Diffie-Hellman, which uses maths and, in particular, the fact it's really hard to factor large numbers (probably NP Hard to be specific, but there's no actual proof of that). The Wikipedia page for this is surprisingly easy to read, so I'll just direct you there to read all about it because I've been writing for too long. This algorithm allows Alice and Bob to agree on a secret number, despite Eve being able to read everything they send each other.

Now Alice and Bob have this secret number key, they can talk in private. Alice puts her message and the key into the encryption algorithm and out pops what looks like a load of garbage. She can then send this garbage to Bob without worrying about Eve being able to read it. Bob can then put the garbage and the key into the decryption algorithm to undo the scrambling and get the original message out telling him where the good donuts are. Voila, they're done!

But how does Alice know that she's sending her message to Bob and not Eve? Eve could pretend to be Bob so that Alice does the Diffie-Hellman dance with her instead and sends her the secret location of the good donuts instead.

This is where asymmetric crypto comes in! This is the one with private and public keys, and the one that uses prime numbers.

I'm not 100% across the maths on this one TBH, but it has something to do with group theory. Anyway, just like Diffie-Hellman, it relies on the fact that prime factorisation is hard, and so it does some magic with semi-primes, ie numbers with only 2 prime factors other than 1. Google it if you want to know more. I kinda zoned out of this bit in my security courses. Maths hard

But the effect of that maths is easier to explain: things that are encoded with one of the keys can only be decoded with the other key. This means that one of those keys can be well-known to the public and the other is known only to the person it belongs to.

If Alice wants to send a message to Bob and just Bob, no Eve allowed, she can first look up Bob's public key and encrypt a beginning message with that. Once Bob receives the message, he can decrypt it with his private key and read the contents. Eve can't read the contents though because, even though she has Bob's public key, she doesn't know his private key.

This public key information is what the lock in your browser is all about BTW. It's saying that the website is legit based on the public key they provide.

So why do we need symmetric crypto when we have asymmetric crypto? Seems a lot less hassle to exchange keys with asymmetric crypto.

Well, it's because asymmetric crypto is slooooow. So, in TLS, the security algorithm that puts the "S" in "HTTPS", asymmetric RSA is used to establish the initial connection and figure out what symmetric key to use, and then the rest of the session uses AES symmetric encryption using the agreed secret key.

And there you have it! Crypto in slightly-less-short-but-still-high-enough-level-that-I-hope-you-understand.

Just realised how long this section is. Well, I did call it "too much detail" for a reason.

Now, next question is what exactly is and isn't encrypted using HTTPS.

Well, as I said earlier, it's basically just the source IP:port and the destination IP:port. In fact, this information is actually communicated on the logical layer below the application layer HTTPS is on, known as the transport layer. Again, as I said before, you can't really encrypt this unless you don't want your data to reach the place you want at all.

Also, DNS is unencrypted. A DNS request is a request that turns a domain name, such as tumblr.com, into an IP address, by asking a special server called a Domain Name Server where to find the website you're looking for. A DNS request is made before an HTTP(S) request. Anyone who can read your internet traffic can therefore tell you wanted to go to Tumblr.

But importantly, this only shows the domain name, not the full URL. The rest of the URL, the part after the third slash (the first two slashes being part of http://), is stuff that's interpreted by the server itself and so isn't needed during transport. Therefore, it encrypted and completely unreadable, just like all the content on your page.

I was going to show a Wireshark scan of a web request using HTTP and HTTPS to show you the difference, but this has taken long enough to write as it is, so sorry!

I could probably write more, but it's 1:30am and I'm sleepy. I hope you found some of this interesting and think twice before purchasing a VPN subscription. Again, there are legit good uses for a VPN, but they're not the ones primarily being advertised in VPN ads. It's the fact that VPN ads rely so heavily on false advertising that really grinds my gears and made me want to do this rant. It's especially bad when it comes from somebody I'd think of as technologically competent (naming no names here, but if you've worked in tech and still promote VPNs as a way to keep data safe... no). Feel free to ask questions if you want and hopefully I'll get around to answering any that I feel I know enough to answer.

This is Amber Corvo! She is the Lupin Gang's official informant/information gather!

Corvo is usually out and about gathering information, whether that be through pretending to be a bartender or be in the alley trying to befriend the local strays to seem like she's absolutely not paying attention to the world around her. She has a passion and hunger for learning things and the longer somebody doesn't tell her secrets the more curious and determined she gets to stealing away that information. Ironically the surefire way to make sure she'll be at a certain location is if Lupin doesn't tell her that she can come along and only briefly mentions the plan to her.

She typically gets away with overhearing things by pulling out an extremely stupid and airheady act and since she looks like a tired college student who just got distracted by a cat that was chilling by the dumpsters. Sometimes this works but when it doesn't Corvo is very quick to bust out her baseball bat to commit acts of extreme violence.

While Corvo does work for gathering and primarily putting information together for Lupin, she does still get hired by other people to give information about whatever they wanted. However, a good chunk of the time these temporary hirers do try to kill her for knowing too much. Sometimes attempt to kidnap her if they realize that she knows a lot about Lupin and his gang as well as a bunch of other important info to try to torture the information out of her.

Corvo being desensitized to this has gotten good at hiding any fear/concern as well as dodging and batting away bullets (not as good as Goemon though but still notable). Usually, Goemon isn't too far off from her in these cases so she doesn't have to worry too much.

Before she joined the gang (and before Goemon joins), Lupin has worked with Corvo in the past just as a free-lance informant he commissions from time to time. Over the course of their business relationship, Lupin got attached to her and the fact that she had a baseball bat as a weapon instead of a gun or a knife interests him and so he frequently begins to try to convince her to join.

Corvo being hesitant to join as a solid member of anybody's team due to the fact that this could be a trap Lupin's trying to lure her in to get all the information out of her. Also because he's a womanizer and didn't want to deal with that from the person who'd be the primary person who pays her.

The informant eventually agrees to join after Lupin and Jigen swooped in and saved her from being shot dead execution-style. She doesn't admit it often but the fact that they did come and save her made her trust them more and come to her senses that it would be more beneficial if she joins them and probably more fun. Typically she just says it's because of the life debt she owns them now, but they know the truth.

Some Trivia-

She typically wears shorts under her skirt. Just so pesky updrafts and also a fall from the sky doesn't flash everybody.

If somebody wants her to stop her life of crime and be a stay-at-home wife the price is one dog. Also, love I guess but the dog is the main thing that's going to make her behave.

In part 1 she's immune to certain poisons since people keep trying to kill her.

She frequently puts a tracking chip on people. The main person she does this to is Lupin.

She frequently listens to police scanners.

Due to how frequently her employers try to kill her she has a fine print in the contracts that say "If you try to kill Amber Corvo or place a hit on Amber Corvo she gets to steal everything you own."

Not only is Corvo excellent at swinging her bat to ward off bullets and ball shaped objects but she’s got a really good pitch as well and will sometimes just throw things.

I'm stupid by nature and misread something so now you get all of her relationships with the gang dfgdghdgfh RIP

Lupin and Corvo- It feels only right to start this off with Lupin. Lupin and Corvo have a very much playful back and forth relationship where they enjoy annoying each other. They get along pretty well, despite the times where Corvo threatens to or actually does hit Lupin for not telling her things she deems as important. Which the vast majority of the time it is something that he should tell his intel so she can help improvise a plan or make sure the others don't screw it up. Lupin enjoys teasing her for her contradictory behavior of being apathetically "You can't hurt me in a way that matters." to immediately hiding away from a door knock cuz unwarranted socialization is scary. Lupin doesn't really enjoy it when he's in trouble with the others and Corvo just cheers them on to kick his ass. Corvo is basically the one who keeps Lupin in check and tells his friends what's going on. Corvo is a violent HR for the lupin gang

Jigen and Corvo- Siblings siblings siblings siblings. When these two they are by themselves together they have such a chaotic dynamic. This is the duo that'll inflict a lot of chaotic damage if in a fight together because they sort of egg the other on. Since he and Corvo are the two people who've been working for Lupin the longest, they have the shared hobby of "Lupin won't listen to us when we warn him so lets just watch him get his ass beat."

They have the bond of "I would absolutely sell you for a half of a penny, no hesitation." but in a loving sibling way.

Fujiko and Corvo- They are sort of rivals considering they both gather information. Their behavior with each other can go from Amber siding and enjoying watching Fujiko reject Lupin and others. Then it can flop to the other side of Amber getting after and trying to screw over Fujiko for betraying them or for messing with Goemon. Though that's much more of an extreme, its usually just a "Hahahahaaa Fujiko you have betrayed us yet again."

These two fill the sides of information gathering that the other doesn't. Fujiko does the more seductive side while Amber fills the more business, "accidentally overhearing" and deep dives into books and theories.

Off work hours these two get along pretty decently and they enjoy jokingly flirting with each other. Fujiko has absolutely dressed Corvo up cuz Corvo doesn't really fight it and doesn't know how to do makeup.

Zenigata and Corvo- If Zenigata ever captures Corvo, Corvo refuses to shut up and will start info-dumping random topics to hopefully make him unarrest her for being annoying. Corvo has absolutely sat on top of the fiat with a megaphone yelling at Zenigata random sad facts until he let Lupin go. It doesn't always work, but listen it's better than nothing.

Corvo: Did you also know that Axolotls have amazing regeneration abilities? Its because they are forever in that in-between being a purely water creature and land-based creature- Zenigata: Shut up! Corvo: .... you silence me? You silence Corvo? that's messed up Zenigata, you know I can talk forever. That's the one thing I'm better at than Lupin and you try to take my god-given right to yell! JAIL FOR POPS! JAIL FOR POPS FOR 1000 YEARS!!!

But listen, Zenigata is going to be thinking of those axolotl facts later. Its going to keep him up at night thinking about glow-in-the-dark amphibians.

Zenigata also absolutely hates it when Corvo bats away his cuffs. He's tried to make adjustments so it just gets stuck but then the crazy broad just starts rapidly spinning the cuffs in the air saying her weapon got new and improved.

Listen the Goemon x Corvo ship is all about that mutual yearning and pining and being equally stupid cuz you spent god knows how long pining for each other in a very obvious way and not ever acting on it except in one series and that's only the Koike movies!

Beyond that the Goemon and Corvo(tm) interactions according to @soft-citrus-central can be described as a Samurai and his Cute Wife.

In some adaptations, Corvo meets Goemon cuz he's trying to kill Lupin and she's just there like "!!! OoOoo Cool Samurai man!! Hell yeah!"

Other adaptations Corvo meets Goemon because she has a hobby of looking into swords and swordsmen so she eventually just works for him usually to help him find a sword (Episode 0).

Either way, Corvo is usually very thrilled to see and meet Goemon. In the Koike series, she deems him the only person who could kill her in a way that matters AKA "Heeehhooo pretty samurai man can kill me and I'd be fine with it."

Typically after the first interaction goes by Amber and Goemon have a very civil relationship that quickly becomes more platonic due to them having similar interests and typically side with each other. They constantly work together as well since Amber hires Goemon to be her bodyguard as she is trading information with people or gathering particularly dangerous info.

Then those platonic feelings turn into romantic cuz, listen if you were Goemon you would also fall for the cute informant girl who whenever you do cool things cheers you on and tries her absolute hardest on making sure you have your preferred foods ready.

ESPECIALLY THE CORVO-CENTERED EPISODES ARE BASED AROUND HER TAKING CARE OF AND BEFRIENDING A STRAY ANIMAL.

The exact reason why Corvo and Goemon don't get together changes from part to part (special to special, movie to movie, etc.) usually it's not really explained can be assumed that both are stupid and don't realize they can just ask the other out.

In part 5 it's because a long time ago Goemon asked Lupin for permission to date Corvo since Lupin's the boss and Lupin got annoyed and said no unless he beats him in a duel.

Typically the two don't really fight, if they do it's just a very quiet argument. However, the main thing they argue about that can be somewhat mean at times is if Goemon falls for another scam because there was a pretty lady, but he doesn't realize it. Which causes Corvo to get at least passive-aggressive with the lady and at worst doing petty things to try to ward her off. Which would upset Goemon, which in turn would make Corvo upset and irritated. So this topic can't really be reasoned out since it's just an argument of emotions until the trickery gets revealed. Even then though when Goemon apologizes and comes back looking like a kicked puppy Corvo can't stay mad and immediately forgives him. Lupin and Jigen absolutely love to laugh at her for this and will do so every time. Much to her immediate embarrassment.

"1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and...  oh, 다연아 잘하네!" Choreographer hyung says. He was right. Although Dayeon wasn't the main dancer, she still danced like a queen. (A/N Periodt😂) Her body moved gracefully and her vibe matched perfectly with the dance moves with a sexy and cute vibe.

"감사함니다 선배님." She says as she continues to move with grace. She was always so clumsy and innocent in real life but the stage really brought her into a different life. She didn't even realize that everyone stopped to watch her until she finished and everyone clapped for her.

"How come nobody claps like that for me when I dance?" Yoona asks.

"It's because she's actually good! She can sing, she can dance, what can she not do?" Kai said. He obviously still likes Dayeon but I feel kind of bad for Yoona since everyone can tell she likes Kai. She always wants his attention but he ignores her and has both eyes on Dayeon.

"I can't rap..." Dayeon says out of breath.

"Come on 다연아, we all know you can. I mean when Sunny was sick in that performance and you had to do her rap, everyone, including 리수만 선생님, said you were amazing." Suah says.

"맞아... you could be the main rapper if you really put your mind to it." Sunny says.

"See? What can she not do?" Kai says still clapping for her. I felt kind of mad when he clapped for her and she blushed. Does Dayeon like Kai? 아니야... 설마... no it's fine if she likes him... but it's not. I think I might like Dayeon. I mentally slap myself. 정신차려! We are in a fake 'marriage' thing with a contract, you got this far, you can't make it awkward now. Just push it down. Even if I wanted to date her, she wouldn't possibly like me back. Her perfection is better for someone perfect or someone who actually needs the love.

"현아? What are you thinking about?" I get waken up by Dayeon's nickname for me.

"Huh? What?" I say.

"What were you thinking so deeply about? We're about to practice one more time." I get up and get in my position. The dance was made so that we dance in our 'couples' but also in our own groups. Kai, Sehun, and Yoona did well. After practicing for a while, I want to go home but I can't take off my pants so just lay on the floor in the way of everyone. Dayeon joins me. "I'm tireddd..." she groans.

"나도!" I say loudly.

"What were you thinking about so deeply before?" She says.

"Huh? Oh... um." I can't tell her. It would be awkward, she won't even reciprocate the feelings. So I made something up.

"Umm... new... laundry detergent! (A/N I'm watching True Beauty and so if you know the reference, yay! If not, go watch it, it's good.)"

"Huh? Why do you need to think so deeply about laundry detergent?" She says slightly tilting her head. She does that when she's confused and it's genuinely the cutest thing ever.

"Uhh well... my nose is sensitive so I was wondering which scent I should get."

"Just choose your favorite one. Why is it so hard? Wait, but our dorm doesn't even have a washing machine." Oops. I forgot. The managers forgot to get a dorm with washing machines so we dry clean everything or go to a laundromat.

"Oh, did I say laundry detergent? I meant cologne." I scratch the back of my head and laugh nervously.

"Oh, makes sense." She says and doesn't pay attention to me anymore. "CAN WE GO HOME PLEASSSEEEE." She yells loudly still on the floor.

"YESSSSS.... PLLLLEEEAAASSSEEEEEEEE." The members pay no attention to our pleas and continue to practice.

"You know, people are not always as perfect as you. We actually need to practice." Suah says.

"We do too but isn't this a bit much? I mean it's already 12! Let's go home and sleeeeppppp..." She says and rolls ariund in exasperation. Because the others wouldn't listen to us, I decided, they can do what the want but I'm sleeping.

"다연아, 나랑 집에 같이 갈래?" I turn to Dayeon and ask.

"Yes please. Everyone, 우리는 먼저 갈게." Dayeon stands up and announces.

"You two in the dorm by yourselves? Just because we aren't there doesn't mean you could do whatever you want, keep it PG please, I do NOT want to walk into something gross." Sehun says.

"야! Worry about yourself! Bye!" We leave and jam out to music in the car on our way to the dorm. We get home and I immediately shower. Dayeon started making dinner and because she was like the only one who cooks, she knew where everything was and that kitchen was like a kitchen in her own house. I come out of the shower and Dayeon was still cooking. "Shouldn't you shower?"

"Oh yeah, Hyun-ah, can you take over?" She hands me the apron she was wearing and a spatula. She was frying kimchi and tofu. "I'm gonna shower so just make sure it doesn't burn."

"Okay, I got it, go shower."

"Thanks." She goes inside and I hear the water running. I started thinking about the nickname Dayeon gave me... Hyun-ah. It sounds like a girl's name but I don't care... it's a special name that no one else has- *beep beep* *beep beep* is that the fire alarm? "Hyun-ah... is that the fire alarm?" I hear Dayeon shout from the shower. I had one job... and I failed. ONE JOB! I frantically open the windows and turn off the heat. Dayeon rushes out the room with her clothes inside out and backwards and her hair dripping wet. "Ahh, you burned it. Didn't I tell you not to do that? Are you still thinking about your cologne? If it's that hard, let's just get one now." She throws away the tofu from the pan, washes it quickly and grabs her keys to go to the mall.

"Wait, isn't it closed? And maybe change and dry your hair at least?"

"Oh... yeah, online shopping it is." She grabs her laptop and gives it to me. "Choose something, look for something you like. I'm gonna REmake the food you burned."

"Sorry... I got distracted."

"With what?!" Umm... I can't say her nickname for me... what do I say?

"Uhhh, my cologne scent?" She shakes her head and chuckles.

"You are so weird." She puts on her apron and starts frying again. She finishes and leaves the food on the table to join me. "Did you find one yet? What? Why are you still on the Google page? Were you not looking at them?"

"It's uhh... it's too hard to choose scents from a screen."

"At least look!" She leans over me to look for a website. She just searched in "cologne scents that men like". I laugh. She looked at articles and asked me about each scent on the list.

"Okay, I'll buy it myself, you don't need to choose one for me!" She turns to me. Her face was really close to me face.

"I said PG!" Sehun says. She turns around.

"PG? Why is this not PG? I was helping him choose a cologne scent."

"Were you guys not like, making out?"

"No, what makes you think that?"

"I don't know, it just looked like it."

"Okay? I make fried kimchi and tofu. It's on the dining room table so if you're hungry, you can eat it."

"Oh, yay, thanks 언니!" Suah runs over to the table. Dayeon turns to me.

"If you don't want my help, sure, do it yourself but later." She walks away to the table to join the others. What just happened?! I join them too. I sit next to Chanyeol.

"Are you sure you guys aren't a thing or something?" He whispers to me.

"No! We're just close."

"This fast? You have known each other for like 2 weeks and you're already this close?"

"Isn't it the same with you and Sunny?"

"Yeah but we're not THAT close."

"What do you mean?"

"You guys watched a movie on your own, you go home together by yourselves, you have matching clothes and you hug each other in your sleep." Chanyeol lists off.

"Well that's because I didn't want to watch horror and we were tired so we went home. Our matching clothes is because it's cute or by accident and you already know that I hug my pillow in my sleep, it's just convenient that she's there in the pillow's place." I said almost screaming. I realized that I was screaming and everyone was staring at me. Chanyeol laughs at me.

"What are you talking about?" Suho asks.

"Uhhh... nothin-" I start.

"Why he's so close to Dayeon." Chanyeol says trying not to laugh. I give him a death glare.

"Wait I'm confused, how close are we?" Dayeon asks.

"Too close to be just friends." Chanyeol says.

"Why are we too close to be friends?"

"Well, you watched your own movie instead of watching with us." Sehun chimes in.

"You went home by yourselves together." Chen says.

"We were tired okay?!" Baekhyun says.

"You hug each other in your sleep!" Sehun says. Dayeon puts her fingers to her lips and mouths 'that was a secret'.

"You do?!" Xiumin asks.

"Maybe..." Dayeon says sheepishly.

"What is happening? Do we have another couple?" Suho asks.

"No! It's just because we're close. Is that not allowed?" Dayeon asks.

"Well no, it's not NOT allowed but you know, you guys are a little too close to the point where people would assume those actions as things couples would do." Suah says.

Polyphasic Sleep

(This info used to be on the front page; moving it over here to clean up a bit and make room for more stuff!  :))

I've been polyphasic for many years now, and back in 2001, I was one of the first people (ok, to the best of my knowledge, actually THE first, which is weird) to write online about sleeping on a polyphasic schedule long-term.  

I've been experimenting with it since, talking with everyone I can about it, helping people through adapting / switching sleep schedules, and have collected a ton of information over the years on my experiences (see the huge list of articles below), as well as organizing it all into a handy and inexpensive book that's still, in its second edition, the first real manual for switching to and living on polyphasic schedules.  Pretty neat, if I do say so myself!

I've helped a lot of people with choosing and adapting to a polyphasic sleep-schedule (it's not easy, especially with the very strict ones — those are rather like switching to a strict diet, only with sleep).  I continue to offer my help as much as I can, through the Slack channel, and by offering private consultations to those who want extra help.  (EDIT: I take breaks from this when my other work is busy, including right now.  If you really need help, reach out and I'll probably help, but I've taken down these links for now because *swizamped*) 

But I'm not interested in building a cult of personality on it.  I also find that I disagree with a lot of what other people — most of whom have not actually slept polyphasically for any length of time — want to conclude about it, especially when they're specifically aiming to sell it or put their name on it.  

(NOTE THO:  When it comes to taking credit for polyphasic sleep…*Most* humans were polyphasic for ages, and much of the world still is — sleeping less at night and napping regularly is "news" to, like, the industrialized modern world and nobody else, lol.  And if anybody gets credit for experimenting with being polyphasic as a modern lifestyle choice, it's the scientist Buckminster Fuller, who died in the 80's and was on Uberman/Dymaxion for at least two consecutive years, documented and seen by doctors, so everybody can just sit / calm down now.  You're not the prophet of this, and neither am I.  :))

WHY IS IT SO GREAT?  WILL IT WORK FOR ME?  (A brief explanation)

Polyphasic (multi-times-per-day) sleep is the one of the top-three best things I've ever stumbled on to improve my life.  (Hacking self-esteem is a close second.)  I've been polyphasic for most of the last decade, and I'll never willingly go back to sleeping in one chunk at night.  (I might be forced to, since being polyphasic requires being able to nap during the day, and there are certainly jobs and circumstances that make that impossible.  I hate those and avoid them at all costs now, though — being well-rested is so important.)  

I'm *much* more rested on my nap-based schedules, and I need half as much sleep as I did before.   Half or less, actually.

Which may sound wild or impossible, but keep in mind two things:

A) Everybody is different, and different things work for different people (at different times in their lives, even).  Some of us love being vegan; others can't abide it.  It's important to recognize that you and everybody else need a sleep schedule and sleep habits that work for you, individually.

B) Polyphasic sleep is common among animals, including almost all primates!  Monophasic sleep became normal for humans in recent centuries.  So it's not even a LITTLE true that monophasic sleep is the "only" healthy way to go for everybody, especially as people's lives change drastically yet again, in post-Internet times.

It's possible to learn new ways to sleep.  We teach babies to be monophasic, remember, and it doesn't kill them.  Switching schedules can make you cranky and tired while you adjust, but at long as you're consistent about it, and the schedule works for you, you *will* adjust to it.  (That part is backed up by some science.)

What isn't possible, I think, is for one schedule to work for everyone.  We each have different sleep needs, but I think we can all agree that whatever they are, it's SO important for each of us to get enough rest!  I DO NOT ADVOCATE NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP — which includes being "technically on" an 8-hour-per-night schedule and then not sleeping enough — I'm looking at you, modern person.  The key, the key to *so much* life-improvement, is to be and feel rested.  I am more rested now, on a total of 4 hours' sleep per day, than I ever was trying (and usually failing) to sleep 8 hours per night.  It takes some work, but it's absolutely possible — and if you're intersted in learning more, I can probably help you out.
