Just want to let you know I'm reading your Ishin okita/hajime fanfics and really love it (will write my comments soon as I get my shit together) and that's how I ended reading the amazing post about Inoue and Serizawa Kamo

Basically my ask is if you have any good books or articles about the shinsengumi and the bakumatsu to rec for someone who got absolutely obsessed with them? Like I know the basic since I have liked the shinsengumi aesthetic having watched rurouni kenshin and gintama, but never had any interest to go deep in the historical details until now when I finally played Ishin

Forgive me if these are some resources that you already know, but I'd say for someone who's just starting to read around, some of the big classics of English introductory material are:

Marius Jansen's Sakamoto Ryoma and the Meiji Restoration. It's a dry read at times, but it's a pretty comprehensive overview of the major players in that period with a focus on what was going on with our friend Ryoma.

Katsu Kokichi's autobiography Musui’s Story, which has an English translation. Obviously you have to take a blowhard's autobiography with a grain of salt but it's a neat little look into the life of a low-ranking samurai.

Yamakawa Kikue's Women of the Mito Domain: Recollections of Samurai Family Life - this one is just filled with interesting little details about household life.

If you're specifically into Shinsengumi stuff, I would suggest having a look at the posts on the Shinsengumi Archives. It seems like the blog hasn't updated for a while, but it's still a fantastic collection of scans from old books, recommended reading, translations, etc.

Beyond that, if you have access to a university library (or have a friend who does, or know places with access to those materials...), there are some academic essay collections that will lead you down various hyper-specific rabbit holes. I flipped through a copy of a collection called The Tokugawa World because there was a chapter on the Shinsengumi there, and then I started following the notes where I could. That chapter is where I got some details about the Roshigumi that Inoue mentions in part 2 of my fic, and I played around with some details about Hijikata's sword from there in part 3. I think that book also somehow put me on a long reading tangent about Tokugawa-era roads that led to the sequence about Izo going off on his travels. In general, falling down a rabbit hole about something extremely specific is a wonderful way to experience history; I can't tell you how delighted I was to find that big collection of egg recipes and to learn more about the aesthetics of Edo-era cuisine while trying to figure out some period-accurate things for Ryoma to cook.

Anyway, I hope that helps! I'm taking a little Ishin break to work on other things but I will return to that setting because I love it dearly. <3
