Three artists will be selected to exhibit square format short video works. Inscape resides in a former immigration detention center; because of the building’s history we seek artists whose work explores broad ideas of immigration, diaspora, and borderlands. The works will be on view July 21-24 in conjunction with the Seattle Art Fair (@seattleartfair). Curated by Kelly Lee Webeck (@rocketfacedweeb) and Jesse Egner (@jesseegner). Free to submit. Can we talk about this 60x60” from 2012? One of my favorite paintings, painted in Seattle in one of my favorite all-time studios @inscapearts and a pivotal piece that really was the beginning of my #lanternseries 🌔🌒🌑🌘🌗 I had always imagined that if this piece never sold it would be one of the paintings that I’d keep with me forever...well: it sold to a couple in Texas who commissioned a third panel, and I’m in the midst of trying to access my 2012 mindset 🙃🙂 what was I thinking about in 2012?!? My life was a completely different world! #tbt to 2013 and my Seattle studio @inscapearts (as always, I miss you Seattle!!😭); in the right side background is my painting “Branch” which was the beginning of my #lanternseries (you can see white overlapping orbs of pattern and dots in the background of the piece in the next pictures). I love this painting ❤️. A wonderful client purchased it for their home and has commissioned a third panel—see the third picture—and I’ve started! It’s transported me to 2013; back then I was using origami paper and maps to collage in the background—I’d then paint over that ground to create subtle texture and abstracted patterning (I still use this technique in current work, but I largely overpaint entirely 😎). Anyway, I STILL had some sheets of the exact origami paper, and a few scraps of the same map! My message to you today, fellow artists: when your conscience (or your partner, ahem) calls you a hoarder and suggests you throw out some of those art supplies, RESIST! You never know when you’ll need them!
