(old art) I finally bought clip studio paint ex so i can do animatics and concept art! i pictured retrograde's world so be highly visual bc anything you DO see in the void has to be engaging and tell the story by itself. Idk if i'll ever have the courage to make it so I think it's okay to... post... whatever lol

It should feel like you got lost in liminal space with broken music playing - blindly walking around knowing that a creature could be inches from you and you wouldn't see it. The only thing keeping you sane is a memory, and you don't even know if it's yours. You don't know who you are or why you're dying, just that your 'soul' is in a lightbulb and it's fraying.

SO... anyway, I originally pictured Proxy in this kind of room:

But I'm realizing that I'm not showing any of her personality or clues as to what the room is so I'm building her house rn. She's a proxy. She should have things, or childish drawings of things, that belong to people in the void. Below is her 'revised house' that you can't see right now lol i'll post it after I finish designing another draft.

doing the Sliiightest revamp on scrimshaw lore but not even that much, these points are mostly just for me to remember lol

lore takes insp from 1899-1909 southern us, especially mining/boom towns (clothing, technology, etc)

scrimshaw serves as an outpost and rest stop since its so far out in the desert (this is when Southern Gothic gets sprinkled in with the town, its residents, and surrounding environment)

the town has connections with a more technologically advanced city near the wiretangle walk and theres some shady business going on between the leaders, tho the townsfolk just turn a blind eye towards it so long as theres a mutually beneficial relationship (ex: technology, “luxury” goods, fresh foods, etc)

the whole vibe of the place is unsettling and eerie, maybe liminal space-esque where time blurs together, what’s familiar is slightly off, and so on

fuck i wish i'd write this fic too. this is such a cute idea. alex talking about stars to jack in general is such a cute idea but there is just such a specific vibe that happens when you're camping and you're around a campfire and there's no light anywhere else the only illumination is the flames and your back is cold but your face is warm and you're huddled together because the nights can get chilly even in the spring and alex has one arm tucked into jack's chest and the other one free to point at the sky and quietly narrate for jack the stories of the constellations and jack has an arm around alex's waist and his head on alex's shoulder and he'll deny it if alex asks but his eyes have absolutely been closed for several minutes he has no idea what alex is pointing at and he's halfway to falling asleep with only alex whispering tall tales of heroes and magic and tragedy and astronomy and entropy into his ear to keep him from drifting off or maybe to sing him to sleep like a lullaby

Otto's Off Limit Area: glitchy screwed up liminal space that barely passes as a "thinking space"

Also, to add to the idea that Otto narrates the whole thing: There is one place in the Off Limit Area where you THINK there'd be combat (open space, healing items) and censor portals appear but Otto just says "And then, there was NO fight scene.", the portals get zapped with lightning (cough cough electrokinetic otto headcanon cough cough) and disappeat

I think when you first enter the nice presentable Otto mind, the narration says something like “This show room is for visitors only, curious Junior Psychonaut! Really impresses new investors if you can bring them into a well curated mental landscape - all while letting me continue my inventing work in another part of my mind.”

Sort of drawing from the way in which you can revisit Coach Oleander’s mind and he basically leaves you an answering machine message saying his basic braining is being kept up for any campers who wanna sharpen their minds.

Also throughout the whole first segment Otto-Narration is very impersonal and only refers to Raz as “junior psychonaut” or other permutations of the title. Gives the initial impression these are all “pre-recorded” messages so to speak, though of course they get much more specific and increasingly emotionally charged as you dive deeper
