Into Thin Air is a remarkable account of an unthinkable event and the people that shaped its outcome. I was constantly turning to Wikipedia to learn of the players’ backgrounds and fate, Krakauer’s portrait was that riveting. Every time I feel a cold bite at my fingers or nose, or feel exhausted in subzero Toronto, I am sobered by the reality many others willingly endure at staggering heights. 'Into Thin Air' by Jon Krakauer I don't know how to write about this book- every adjective that I think of is saddled with the weight of death. A retelling of the events that unfolded in the deaths of his fellow mountaineers, the book is a personal account by @krakauernotwriting of what happened and make sense of the whys. What worked for me: • Sherpas, local Nepalis who ace mountain climbing, have not been shuffled as footnotes to the mountain climbing experience. They literally set the stage for the non-Nepali folks to climb- from carrying supplies to setting ropes and yet in the 90s a tour guide charged $65000, while the Sherpa who works the hardest made about $2500. Go do the Math. As someone from the subcontinent and from a country whose heritage includes examples of this kind of exploitation, it's safe to say- it made my blood boil. • I knew there are risks in mountaineering- high altitude sickness is something we are advised about while doing our acclimatization when travelling to higher altitudes- but the book delves into that and others in more depth and covers a larger risk base. It was scary- how the body turns against itself when so out of its comfort zone. • Krakauer's writing is fascinating. He has written about a horrific episode with remarkable clarity and coherence. I wanted to devour everything that he has ever written. Sharing one of the pic that I have from the Himalayan range. And another of a quaint railway station in the foothills of Himalayas. Sunday mornings armed with a flask of tea and sandwiches, we would head to this platform and chill. Only two trains frequented this station- one arrived in the morning. Another left at night. No último sábado, fazendo uma matinê com o Marido, escolhemos como segundo filme "Evereste". Rolando os primeiros minutos eu entendi que o ano era 1996...E depois o nome de Jon Krakauer surgiu numa conversa e logo disse ao Marido: Eu tenho esse livro! (não foi tão calmo assim, algumas expressões em volume alto foram ditas quando o nome do Krakauer foi mencionado). Portanto, metade de mim queria ler logo No Ar Rarefeito e a outra metade queria que A Estrada não terminasse nunca! Ambos sobre sobrevivência: o primeiro sobre uma escalada com muitos erros no percurso e o segundo como resistência ao mundo pós-apocalíptico. May 20th, 2020 || 📚mini-reviews📚 . 🌿All Among the Barley by Melissa Harrison. i thought that this novel was going to be a difficult one to read. don’t know why i thought that to be honest but i was very wrong. i was completely mesmerized by page 1; the writing was very beautiful, descriptive and focused on nature. Harrison deals with very different themes from class, mental health, privilege, self-identity, gender and sexuality to the rise of Fascism in the UK and its “let’s go back to the past and focus on traditional British way of living” kind of mentality; and she does so in an incredibly nuanced and subtle manner. there was one problem for me: i wish it had been longer. i was not ready to let the characters go. . 🗻Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. i’m not into mountaineering, at all and simply thinking about climbing a mountain, least of all Everest, makes me shudder. but at the same time i find interesting to understand why others would.
