I just watched "I saw the TV glow" and it didn't hit me like I thought it would at first

And then I read a couple of reddit posts and videos explaining some parts, and here I am, crying 5 minutes later BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND, LIKE

Owen getting scared of leaving with Maddy and getting himself grounded because he was scared.

His dad forcing him under the shower and washing away the glow.

AND THEN MADDY COMING BACK AND TRYING TO SAVE OWEN

MADDY SAYING, "The longer you wait, the closer you get to suffocating." LIKE, WHAT?!?!

"I know it's scary. That's part of it," OMG, WHAT. THAT SO TRUE BECAUSE EVEN NOW IM SCARED OF TELLING PEOPLE, OF FIGURING OUT WHO I AM, OF SEEING THE GLOW.

Owen saying "It's like the Drain Lords. Just like the Drain Lords. It's not real if I don't think about it." IS SUCH UGGHGHFFHFHSJXVJS, THE WAY OWEN DOESNT WANT TO "WAKE UP" BECAUSE HE'S SCARED HE MIGHT DIE, AND IT CONNECTS, IT FUCKING CONNECTS BACK TO WHEN OWEN SAID " . . . I know there's nothing in there, but I'm still too nervous to open myself up and check."

OWEN IS STILL TOO SCARED AFTER 8 YEARS TO CHECK IF THERES NOTHING.

AND THEN AFTER RUNNING FROM MADDY, THE CHALK SPELLING "There's still time" UTHFJKSGC

AND THEN AFTER 20 FUCKING YEARS FUCKING LATER, OWEN SHOUTS HE'S DYING AND NOBODY IS LISTENING, NOBODY CAN HEAR HIMM????? (OH MY GODD, I HAVE NEVER FELT MORE RELATED TO IN MY LIFE.) AND THEN OWEN FINALLY OPENED UP TO CHECK AND SAW THE GLOW WITHIN AND THEN HAD TO GO BACK AND ACT LIKE THAT DIDNT JUST HAPPEN AND APOLOGIZE TO PEOPLE OH MY FUCKING GOOOOOOODODODDODODOSOSSOS

AND EVEN THOUGH MADDIE TRIED TO SHOW OWEN, HE STILL COULDNT DO IT, AND IT DEPENDED ON WHAT HE DECIDED TO DO AND HOW HE HANDLED IT, AND HE COULDVE BEEN FREE AT ANY TIME, BUT HE DIDNT

10/10 unforgettable, I'm going to go die now

I just watched I saw the TV glow last night and omg. This movie. I cried 4 separate times and didn't even know why I was crying for any of them. After the movie ended I just sat and watched the credits roll and cried and thought about the masterpiece I had just watched. It was one of those movies where it feels wrong to speak once it's over, I was so absorbed in it that my voice sounded alien to me and didn't sound right until I woke up the next morning. I cannot stop thinking about Owen and Isabel, if you only watch one movie this summer pleasepleaseplease make it this one!!!

Can we all do a Goncharov with The Pink Opaque? Like I'm so glad it's on Peacock now, I haven't watched it since I was like 6 and my older sister would watch it. I wonder if it's as scary as I remember? I can't wait to see Tara and Isabel again! I love the theme song so much...

im kinda encouraged by how i haven't seen discourse saying that it's bad that owen isn't played by a trans woman. which isn't to say there might not be valid points to be made there, but i think the role was well-served by not having the expectation of that conclusion or the sense that owen is notably feminine (idk if it was me but i think the movie visually emphasizes justice smith's adam's apple sometimes?) (and it can be complex to ask a trans woman to play a role in which she's supposed to read largely as a man). and casting an nb actor in the potentially-cis other lead role also combats the issue of employing only cis people (obviously also writer-director, some of the soundtrack, idk about other folks)

I think what a lot of ppl r missing abt maddy/tara leaving Owen/isabel behind in their old suburban town is the fact that when maddy/tara left, they didn’t thrive and find themselves per se. I mean, they had the freedom to express themselves a bit more outside of their parents seemingly a bit suffocating hold, but it’s not like they were in queer paradise or anything. They wanted to die. They wanted it to end because they couldn’t survive, metaphorically speaking. Maddy/tara skipped town thinking everything would magically feel better. They didn’t. They still felt suffocated and odd in this life, the same way Owen/isabel did. Only when maddy/tara ‘escaped’ into the show and found her true self within the escapism of this show did she want to live again, and find Owen/isabel to take her with them into a world where she could finally feel like herself. Maddy/tara didn’t leave Owen/isabel for dead in this suburban town- they left to find a world they could both finally live in together as themselves.

a small detail that kills me in i saw the tv glow is tara’s character is confident, doesnt mess around and is a go getter.

tara in the midnight realm wouldve felt that drive, that knowing feeling that she didnt belong there but she couldnt leave until she found *someone* and wouldve felt that since fucking birth and she would’ve been searching since.

Isabel is a lot more skittish and quicker to hide, less likely to make a scene, but tara has been looking for isabel and *thought* she’d found isabel in amanda- the girl we see tara hanging out with in the first sleepover. tara was always searching for isabel.

but she found her eventually, they *both* found isabel eventually.

also a paralell to this theory i like is isabel trying to find tara in the final episode of season 5 of the pink opaque- failing because tara is buried deep underground but she finds a fake tara instead and it costs her. isabel couldn’t find tara cuz she was buried too deep to scream for help, and tara cant find isabel in the midnight realm cuz shes buried too deep, the soil packed in too tight.
