one of the things i noticed as i've been posting gifs of the bear s2 is that there is a LOT of support for sydcarmy...which makes me comfortable enough to share some thoughts about them and their future ☺️

back when only s1 was out i thought i was crazy for seeing romantic undertones and largely kept that to myself. i was happy to see this dynamic go either way (platonic or romantic) back when it was more ambiguous in s1 but now it's becoming more obvious, isnt it? seeing that literally everyone and their mother is picking up on these not-so-platonic signals makes me feel less alone.

i'm just praying we don't go the ted lasso route where the showrunners bait us with tedbecca endgame only for it to mean nothing. i would much rather that this relationship remain platonic, wholesome and complex than to be fooled and constantly misled. if anything i hope this goes more of the mentalist route where our main leads jane and lisbon spent a lot of time as just co-workers, only to eventually end up as a couple in the final season. in this scenario, we still get to have the 'will they/won't they' build up and thrill, plus we also get to spend some time with them as a couple when they're ready for it. their dynamic is tested countless times but they always go back to each other throughout the seasons, stronger and closer than before.

i don't understand why there's such a loud and vehement response against this ship online and i won't even bother to. if the ship becomes canon, it isn't bad or lazy writing, its just a natural development that we can trace all the way back to s1. and if they remain platonic, then ohh boy that's gonna be fun to unpack. i think if they decide to keep them platonic just because "you don't see it often on television", then imo THAT'S lazy. there's clearly potential here and it would be a shame to see it go to waste all in the name of being different and edgy. this show still stands out amongst so many others because of its writing, directing, character studies, premise, etc. so leaning into a romance would not be a disservice to the story/writing in any way, unless syd and carmy are reduced to only being love interests. i wouldn't be too happy about that either because both characters are so fully fleshed out and have their own pasts, presents and futures that they need to work on together, but also individually too.

but hey that's just my opinion 🤷‍♀️

despite all that i guess all i really hope for, more than anything else, is that we get satisfying stories and arcs for our bear fam 🙏🙏 i don't want my expectations to be sky high so i will remain cautiously optimistic 👍

Oh boy, this is my own issue, but you have no idea how insanely difficult this question is to answer concisely for me!

Pale

So here's the thing: Pale Erikar isn't my jam, I'd still call it underrated, and most importantly there really isn't much for me to say that hasn't already been said more eloquently and in more detail in the Eridan Essay Here. While I disagree with a lot of its conclusions, they're still well justified, including the case it makes for pale Erikar. In fact, it makes such a good case that I often find in my own analysis reasonable additions to its case.

However, half of this blog's reason for existing, besides being inspired by it, is standing up for Kanaya in response to it. I will not tolerate her persecution and being misunderstood. But to be clear that's just a silly little kanaya quote, we're all having fun here. To my understanding, the writer of that essay doesn't want to engage with the fandom as a whole, and good heavens do I get that. That being said, I come from a different philosophy of analysis that sees all existing scholarship as something to either be supported or refuted, so that knowledge in a discipline (Eridanomics) as a whole may be advanced. Meaning, a lot of my analysis may implicitly, explicitly, or just incidentally respond to claims made in that essay or on that blog. To be clear, this kind of thing is critically dependant on respectful engagement, and I would never want to appear aggressive in responding. If you try to pass on anything of my analysis to them while being disrespectful to them, you are absolutely dead to me.

That all being said, I mainly find it hard to imagine anybody specifically as Karkat's moirail, because in my opinion he was meant to be everybody's moirail. Much like his ancestor's transcendent relationship with the Disciple, he'd have very nontraditional quadrants. With him as the leader of the trolls, part of that role would be to be everybody's better half, as well as the one that can control and pacify his group as a whole, rather than just individuals. In that way, the irony of Karkat is that although he's kind of the rom com guy, he lends himself best to platonic versions of the quadrants that aren't as exclusive and committal. So while it's not really what you're asking, I do very much like semi-pale (friendship?) Erikar. But, if I woke up tomorrow having completely forgotten about my leader as omnimoirail idea, I'd very much like normal pale Erikar. Not as much as Erikan, but still. Alright long way around but we got to it: Pale Erikar good 👍.

Flushed

I haven't really given much thought to flushed Erikar yet, which means it's time to!

After giving it some thought, I think there's a dynamic that can make flushed Erikar fun storytelling: A deliberately obnoxious power couple performance. You have two characters that aren't just interested in finding love, they're interested in the optics and appearance of love. They match pretty well in bombast, vulgarity, rudeness, and hostility, and are just generally loud and forceful personalities, all of which ensures that others are constantly aware of a matespritship that they deliberately craft to be as conspicuous as possible. They're naturally inclined to the theatric, from Karkat's love of romantic movies to Eridan's self-professed melodrama. Everything they do is made more extreme than it needs to be. Their loving public displays of affection to their fights, they play it all up. To a point where to others, everything about them is too fantastic, too artificial to be real, like they're just playing out cheesy tropes, because in part they are.

And that's where the dynamic has its cute twist. Where other people might see superficiality, they see a form of affection that they love doing and receiving. All their heightened drama is just their unique way to demonstrate their love for each other. Behind closed doors, when nobody is paying attention, they can seamlessly switch modes from performative intensity to something even more sweet in its subtlety. The juxtaposition between their public and private personas is to them, the strongest evidence of their genuine love for one another. The hypothetical audience is allowed to savor in the dramatic irony of how they alone can listen in on the dialogue that occurs between them under their breath, as other characters either believe the facade or think they see through it. Description or depiction of their publicized affection take on a whole new meaning when the audience is aware of the nuance behind it.

As people can probably tell by now, for me shipping is all about the story that can be told, and you can easily add another layer to that one. Make it a romance that does actually start out as fake and loveless, but in which real feelings develop over time. A slow burn that other characters perceive as a whirlwind romance. Karkat, perhaps grappling with a cynical view of leadership, seeks to make himself appear as more legitimate by having a romantic partner, one that he wouldn't actually need to manage. Eridan, lonely and desperate just to be perceived as being desired by somebody else, jumps at her opportunity to play the role. In the process of crafting and maintaining their power couple facade, bam, genuine feelings. Genuine feelings that they might not even be mutually aware that they share, leading to the fun scene of a confession of love well into a relationship.

Man, I really like that now. I initially thought I'd finish this ask by saying I like pale more than red, but in the process of writing it out, I fell in love with that dynamic and I can honestly say I value it higher than pale. How ironic, that in my construction of a fiction I fall in love with it. Anyways good going to both you and another anon of an upcoming ask for making me think this one out. Flushed Erikar just got upgraded to "works really well" tier.

Ok gonna be honest when I saw your request one thing came to my mind " Two of those works don't belong that close together." But never one to back away from a challenge I shall do my best 👍 Also sorry it took so long with this one had some stuff come up in rl that stopped me from writing for a bit.

Warning ⚠️  It's been ages since I was a teen so my depiction of one may be off 😅 

Overall 

• They all see you in a similar way to Omega however as you are older than her, they know a lot more risks and have a harder time keeping you close/dependent on them.

• They'd prefer that you stay on the ship during missions, especially if one of them can stay behind and watch you.

• If they can't be prepared for what can only be described as being grounded to hell and back. Starting with Tech locking down the ship, no one is getting in or out of that thing. Echo has hidden away any of the dangerous items and Wrecker has put out some fun but safe things for you to do after you finish the list of chores Hunter has left for you.

• It's not all bad however, after a while they did think it best to use you as the emergency pick-up driver. Tech taught you how to fly and operate the ship under emergency scenarios, yes Hunter was present during those and yes he almost had a heart attack.

• Sometimes their styles do clash when it comes to how they want to treat and spend time with you, for example, Hunter is a lot very blunt when than Echo is when it comes to protecting you (think of Hunter as the Overprotective father and Echo as the kind but Overprotective Mother).

• Omega and Wrecker are the only two that don't but-heads over their needs for you, they are both clingy but they were like that before you joined them so they are used to being around one another that it would feel weird if either one of them wasn't there with you as well.

• Crosshair often gets into arguments with Echo and Hunter usually over something Crosshair wants to do with you, for example, Crosshair doesn't mind taking you on missions with him. He's often perched away from the fights and wants you to watch him work, maybe even show you a trick or two. Hunter and Echo strongly disagree with this and have had some physical altercations over it.

Hunter

Type: Overprotective 

Hunter can't be classed as anything but overprotective when it comes to you.

He wants to keep you safe and will do everything in his power to do so.

Which makes him the worst in the group.

 Why you may ask, well those keen senses of his. He can tell the moment something changes with you, then he's on you faster than you can say oh no. It can be literally anything as well, he knows what's normal for you and what's not. So even the smallest change in your vitals, behaviour, hormones and scent and it’s all 21 and counting questions.

If you happen to be a girl... Yeah if you've already had your first visit from aunt flow, you’re in for a real treat. Of course, he knows what it is but it takes a two-hour talk with both you and Tech to assure him that the process is completely normal. Still doesn't stop him from going into red alert (pun intended) every time it happens.

He does, however, respect your privacy, if you ask him to leave you alone for a bit or deny him access to your room he respects it. It doesn’t mean that he won't be listening in on you in other ways or that he won't bust down the door if he feels you're in danger.

Echo

Type: Overprotective 

Like Hunter, Echo is very protective of you in a mother goose sorta way.

He’s a lot more gentle about it than Hunter is, to you at least. To everyone else well I didn’t say goes for no reason.

He’ll often explain why he does/suggests something when it comes to keeping you safe and with them. For example, with a mission, he doesn’t stop at “It’s too dangerous” but goes on to say why specifically that mission poses a risk to you "It's too dangerous because it involves x which you haven't trained for that" etc.

He'd come off a lot more reasonable and a better listener than everyone else.

He's reasonable yes unless it involves current/former Separatists.

If there happens to be a mission that brings them into contact with them be prepared for him to not let you out of his sight and to go full lockdown mode. 

To be fair he has a valid reason after what they did to him he doesn't want it happening to you, he just gets a little too carried away with that.

Tech

Type: Manipulative 

He'll manipulate you with facts (I could just stop there but he's me boy so).

To put it simply anything that you think/want to do that would in his opinion be bad for you, he somehow has a fact that proves it's wrong. Even if the information is slightly skewed.

It's not like he's completely making up data, he's simply not revealing the entirety of it. Honestly, you'd think it would bother him but when he first started to use facts to persuade you they were all very much true. The only problem was that after a while he was running out of relatable factoids to use.

Like the rest of the squad, he is protective of you, in his own unique way. Yes, he would 100% get into a fight if needed for you but he also prides himself on preventing that from happening in the first place.

It works 99.9% of the time, mainly due to how persistent he is about it. It's easier just to do what he suggests rather than argue against him, it won't take you long to learn that. If you do manage to outlast him be prepared to face smug and sarcastic Tech. Don't get him wrong he's still going to fix it but not before/after he makes you feel bad first.

Honestly, he doesn't change too much, he seems a lot more interested in your health and well-being than his brothers. But aside from that to anyone else he could appear to be his normal self.

Wrecker

Type: Clingy 

Literally wants to be around you 24/7

He's the big bro that may be 1000% too Overprotective but will at least attempt to make up for it with tons of fun

He is the first one to go with you for after-mission snacks or to go out for a little bit of RnR. He's also the first one who's going to start a fistfight in the name of your honour or minor inconvenience 

He can be a bit impulsive and forget that he is way bigger and stronger than you, often leading you to either be dragged along with him or being crushed by his inhuman strength.

He tries not to use his impressive strength to do you any harm and he will try to avoid using it to get you to do what he wants, but at the end of the day, he isn't going to totally cut that option off.

Crosshair

Type: Stalker/Possessive 

Crosshair is the group's cat you could say. He loves your attention and company but at the same time also likes to have his space.

It often leads him to be caught between wanting you to hang out with only him and him wanting to be left the hell alone.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t going to keep an eye on you when he does have some solo time, he will watch you like the hawk that he is.

So expect if Hunter doesn’t know something about you then Crosshair certainly will know it.

He wants to teach you how to shoot properly, unfortunately, that is a no from both Hunter and Echo. It also doesn’t help that he is the world's worst teacher, despite being observant he forgets others aren’t always as quick learners as him.

He has numerous amounts of times suggested that you be assigned to him during missions, after all, he is often up and out of harm's way. 

He can be borderline clingy in public, but that’s mainly his strong dislike of regs with the small (very large) fear that you will be taken away from the group.

I am not personally under that impression ....but it's true Nene-chan's youngest childhood is very well hidden from us, and I do think it will be a kind of 'drop' to see young, young Nene-chan.

While it's Not, Like, Impossible A Divorce Happened Before Or After This, or her parents are in some way unsatisfactory..... I do not personally see how that would advance our understanding of Nene-chan's complexes. Unlike Amane, I do not think Nene-chan's cheery attitude in younger life is a facade ... we see plenty of her attitude, anyway, at many ages (though we also see that her only friend seems to be Aoi, and we do not see her BEFORE middle school for more than a single panel).

So it's within my theory that it was the Graveyard that started his softening, so him sacrificing something from there of all places is hugely significant

But it's really interesting how after that, it slowly focused in on 4

The way how in the 100 hour live stream he was the one sticking around the longest, sacrificing a lot of his money and time for 4

How with his last breath (at least he thought it would be) he decides to let go of his tendency of denying his feelings, something that's absolutely hard for him to do and tell 4 just how much he matters

Then when the demonic keyboard doesn't want to let go of 4, he chooses with little hesitation to RISK HIS LIFE to SAVE 4

That sticks out to me so much

And it's slowly turning into a pattern

Hobo:

same anon. qpr is queer platonic relationship, For Me it’s like you’re my best friend and it’s platonic but i literally am in love with you. and i want to live inside your ribcage. deeply. but platonically. yeah its a vague term and it’s different for everyone so 🤷 but its like. when you are in a committed relationship with someone and you choose to highlight it as Different than being besties but it Is platonic. like you’re engaged but in a nonromantic nonsexual way but you would still buy a house and grow old together but for. dating. i think their canon relationship is very close in a way similar to that so again i don’t mind them in a polycule together (have been in a polycule w my best friend. it was normal and fine) i just don’t like the people they end up dating for that to be the case. doesn’t really make sense anymore for either of them to date nancy for example (in my opinion) so sometimes it feels like people are doing gymnastics to get all the st young adults all dating each other and that is not. helpful or genuine, and with steve and robin. like they can be best friends and they can be in a qpr without it being they’re dating all the same people and are unable to let go of each other. just because you are in a close relationship with someone doesn’t mean you don’t ever do things by yourself but uh. yeah. just my two cents sorry for ranting abt it 👍

anyways, you and izuku have been together for half a year now— and of course, the topic of meeting his mom was going to come up.

so when izuku excitingly asked you to meet his mom that same weekend, you were naturally excited ‼️

..but also incredibly nervous. like yeah, you still want to meet his mom— not taking up this opportunity to see his mom would be a waste

plus you were able to envision how sad izuku would look if you told him that you couldn’t meet her ☹️😔

damn him for weaponizing his boyfriend tears /j 🤬😾‼️‼️

but 😭😧 what if she doesn’t like you 😭❓❓

this is a common worry, especially when it’s in regards to meeting your significant other’s parents— but this is izuku’s mom.

yeah, she’s his mom, so you’re obviously going to worry about being liked or disliked— but you’ve heard the stories from your friends, and they all say the same thing.

“she’s quite literally— the sweetest person on earth!”

“not going to lie, she made me believe in humanity again.”

“she’s so kind!”

“i can’t believe someone so kind natured and doting like her exists.”

even bakugou had something good to say about his mom 😟 “..she’s not bad, i guess.” and that says a lot

you’ve only heard good things about his mom— and you have no doubt that it’s true, considering that izuku’s sunshine and genuine kindness in one body.

so you wouldn’t be shocked, if his mom’s also like that too 🧎‍♀️

but y’know.. if she doesn’t like you— then there means that there’s DEFINITELY something wrong with you.

if someone like her doesn’t like you— then you’re probably the devil incarnated 😨 and you’ll most likely cry yourself to sleep, if you manage to get her to dislike you. even if it’s mild

izuku knew that you were nervous about meeting his mom— that feeling’s natural. but when you told him that you’re scared that she won’t like you

he was FLOORED 😨 again, your boyfriend knows this fear is only natural— he felt the exact way when he was about to meet your parents/guardians/relatives.

but he found it especially shocking, because she literally adores you (but you have no way of finding that out— unless you actually meet her)

“what?” izuku looks at you— like you said something impossible, “don’t worry, Y/N! she likes you!” he’d dare say love, but that’d be too soon to say because you haven’t met her yet

you try to take his word for it, because izuku’s a sweetheart, you don’t doubt that he’d tell that to anyone tbh— but he also doesn’t gain anything from lying to you in a situation like this.

either way, nothing can stop that feeling of anxiety that’s bubbling in your stomach— well, not nothing. if you got your boyfriend’s mom’s approval, then that’d certainly stop it 😃👍

now you two are standing in front of his childhood home, just waiting for the door to open after izuku rang the doorbell.

izuku’s standing close to you— enough to have the side of his shoulder brushing against yours. on any normal day well it kinda is but not exactly you would’ve found that comforting, but it still feels like your heart’s about to give out thanks to anxiety 😨

and before you know it, that feeling flees you entirely— when inko midoriya in the flesh opens the door, and you’re met with probably the sweetest looking woman in all of existence.

she greets izuku first, smiling warmly before giving him a hug— then it’s almost like she quickly discards his presence entirely 💀, because she’s immediately turning to you with interest, her eyes roving all over you with excitement.

“oh, you must be Y/N!” and her smile only grows when you confirm it “i’m izuku’s mom, i feel like he’s already told you— and speaking of which, izuku has told me all about you! it’s months of information please, come in!”

and then she ushers you into her home without a second of doubt.

izuku’s cheeks are already blushed pink, realizing that his mom just subtly exposed him 😭 he hopes that the topic doesn’t come back

now, inko may look incredibly excited about meeting you (which, she is), but under all that excitement is layers of nervousness— so you are definitely not alone on that part 💀

only izuku knows that inko basically turned the house upside down when she was preparing for your visit,

by rearranging some stuff, cleaning, cooking your absolute favorite dish (she asked izuku) remaking it once— all the yards, basically. and all izuku ever tells you later on is that “oh, my mom was.. extremely nervous, you don’t even know!” 😭🧐

turns out, people were 100% correct when they said all that nice stuff about his mom 😃👍 and izuku really wasn’t kidding when he said that she likes you— even without proving yourself first we’ll get into that later

why? izuku talks a lot 😼👍

anyways, even though inko’s basically your bestie that’s 20+ years your senior now, she asks you those obligatory questions about your relationship.

they’re not bad questions, and she’s not testing you 😨 don’t get me wrong— but she’s just genuinely curious.

she ensures you that you don’t have to answer of course, but now you’re just lowkey pressured to answer 💀

“so how did you and izuku meet?”

“oh, mrs. midoriya—”

“inko, dear.”

“right, sorry— inko, i first met izuku in a pond during junior high, but i really got to know him in our first year at UA! i sat near him, so me and him had the opportunities to talk a lot.”

“oh? you guys also went to the same junior high? what are the odds! if i may ask.. what do you like about izuku?”

you freeze, “oh, i don’t mean to put any pressure on you, dear! i’m just kind of curious—”

“well, uh,” you begin, “i love everything about him, inko.”

and that was what sealed the deal for her— she’s taken a HUGE liking to you ever since izuku spoke about you, and she was left to be curious about your very existence, how you’re like, your interest, etc.

but now she totally wants you as an in-law 😃

well, when she first saw you, she was already like “omg? THIS HAS TO BE MY FUTURE IN-LAW 🤩‼️” but your answer really confirmed things for her, even if you weren’t planning to blurt out “i love everything about him, inko.”

if y’all don’t get married that’ll be a real sad thing for her 😭 so please get married lol

it takes you a second for you to realize what you just blurted out in front of izuku, and his mom 😨‼️ “oh, i— i meant— i love everything about him, yes. but there are specific things i love about him— he has his flaws just like everybody else, but i love his attention to detail, how he just cares about people indiscriminately, how he always makes sure to stay humble despite his many improvements in school, his freckles his smile, and.. yes. everything, about him.”

but she only gives you a warm smile while also lowkey jittering with happiness its a miracle that she hasn’t bursted out crying from happiness “i’m so glad that you do.” and she then gives izuku a look that screams approval and relief.

(izuku’s too busy being happy at you two chatting, to be fully focused on his own blushing cheeks he’ll ask you about your answer later)

BONUS: inko watches in silence as you and izuku wash the dishes happily. her heart gives her a nice squeeze of contentment just witnessing the scene. she also tries not to freak out (in a good way) whenever izuku blushes whenever he accidentally touches your hand in front of her💀 it’s all innocent.

in short— you and inko are besties 🤩, even before you properly realized it, and you aren’t sure as to why you were nervous in the first place 🗿 izuku’s sincerely glad that you two are getting along just fine, but he just hopes that his mom doesn’t expose him 😟

Your knees stung from the concrete underneath you, your sword flying from your hands and clattering to the ground a few feet away from you. Water dribbled down onto you from the water-sword Childe held before they dissolved, a cheeky smile on his face.

"Gotcha again," he said, offering you a hand and helping you to your feet. "You almost knocked me off my feet that time. You're getting better."

You picked up your sword and put it away with a huff. "I'll beat you one day, and that's a promise."

"Yeah, yeah," he waved you off, leading you back inside. "Your knees are bleeding. Let's get 'em bandaged up and then get something to eat, yeah?"

The mansion built just for you contained anything you could've possibly wanted, including a courtyard designed specifically for Childe to train you in. You'd asked him to teach you how to fight properly, and he eagerly agreed. Over the several weeks he'd been teaching you, you developed a routine of sorts: an hour of training, a 15 minute break, another hour of training, and then dinner. You always looked forward to that.

Childe sat you down on your luxurious red couch, pulling your pant leg up to clean your badly scraped knees and apply some bandages to them.

"There we go," he said with a smile before he stood up, running off to make your dinner. You had servants ready and willing to make your meals, but he always insisted. Like an apology for going so hard on you, like always. He just gets too invested in the fight to remember you're still learning, so he makes your food afterward as an apology.

While you wait, you find your mind beginning to wander a bit. You first met Childe in the wild outside of Mondstadt, shaking and starving in a small cave. The people of Mondstadt had been deceived by an impostor, sitting on the throne built specifically for you, and they chased you out of the city like an animal. Childe found you lost and alone, cowering in a little cave begging him not to hurt you. When they finally realized what was going on and begged for your forgiveness, you asked Childe to teach you to fight, and to protect you in the meantime.

Your train of thought was interrupted when Childe came back with a tray and two bowls on it. "Here we go," he said with a smile, sitting the tray down on your lap. "You did really well today. I can see your abilities improving."

You immediately wolfed down his soup, delicious as usual. After working so hard with Childe you almost always found yourself eager for his cooking; it really did work up an appetite. “Only cuz I have such a good teacher,” you said through a mouthful of octopus.

He chuckled, taking his bowl off the tray. “Well… Maybe,” he teased. Childe’s lighthearted comments always made you feel better, less otherworldly. Everyone else revered and worshipped you (and Childe did too) but he knew you well enough to know his teasing didn’t upset you. He treated you like his comrade before he treated you like a god. It felt less lonely that way.

“Whatever,” you mumbled, placing your now empty bowl on the tray. You really had scarfed the whole bowl down fast.

“I’ll finally knock you over tomorrow!” you declared, jabbing him in the side. He only smiled, shrugging. “That’s what you’ve said the past five sessions,” he said through his food. “Forgive me for not believing you.”

“Oh, it’ll be this one,” you said confidently, crossing your arms. “Promise.”

He only chuckled, picking up your tray and the two bowls. “I’ll hold you to that, Your Grace.”
