I feel like I’ve been too hard on DT87, it’s not bad, it’s just not quite as good . Here’s some things I actually prefer about ‘87 to the reboot.
1) Triplets do more together
I think the biggest fault of DuckTales ‘17 was that Huey, Dewey and Louie didn’t do anything together towards the end. For a lot of Season 1, Dewey is keeping a secret from his brothers so he mostly interacts with Webby. In Season 2, Louie is doing his money arc which means he spent a lot of time not with his brothers and instead trying to make money. In Season 3 Huey spent a lot of time with team science, and ever individual storyline is getting wrapped up in the last 7 or so episodes so the triplets don’t get that much attention.
Even in the finale the triplets don’t interact much. Huey is separate from his brothers for like half the first episode, the entire 2nd episode and half the third episode. Honestly their reunion didn’t even matter that much because the episode’s focus was more on Scrooge.
Obviously they don’t need to do everything together, but I personally feel like for all the episodes the triplets got with all three of them together, we needed wayyyy more. They split up too many times for my liking, which is especially a shame because they interact so well when they are together. It would also make episodes like “Day of the Only Child!” (S1 E16) more impactful, because they would actually be getting some needed time apart, and the conclusion that they love each other but can still be their own people would be justified.
2) A little wackier
Just a little, but I think that wacky stuff should happen more often, especially to characters who aren’t the main cast. Like DT87 has a whole episode where Dufus has a superhero arc and it’s because of aliens evading the space police and the aliens talk like Yoda? Like, okay?
Or Gyro goes to the past and wants to be a knight but he can’t do he has to be a “gadget man”. And he just takes the triplets with him on accident? And he just makes a bath tub in to a Time Machine?? Idk I feel like DT17 just lacks some goofiness, not all the time, but sometimes.
3) All the kids are literally so cute
That’s really it. The whole gang is adorable in DT87, Webby and the boys in particular. Like absolutely I’d let them get away with their shenanigans look at those beady little eyes.
Also it’s really sweet how they like, are actually nice to people sometimes. I’ll just use the “Sir Gyro De Gearloose” again, but they won’t leave him in the past, even though they could return, because he’s their friend. But they’re worried that Uncle Scrooge might be worried?? They’re so sweet sometimes, it’s adorable.
That’s it
I still prefer the reboot, but the original has this charm to it that, while I wouldn’t sit down and binge, can still be appreciated. I love these little guys.
