5 Oldest BLs I Want to Remember Forever

I keep getting tagged in that "oldest BL" game so I thought I'd just do my version of it.

So here are 5 of my very oldest BL screen caps and why I keep them around.

Japan's Takumi-Kun 2007

Possibly the first BL I ever saw, I don't really count it as such. That was before BL existed as a term, I got access to a bootleg version through my anime contacts way back when. (Like on a damn thumb drive.) Technically it was probably 2009 or so since it was DaiMao with fan subs. I remember not liking it all that much but understanding why others might. And then returning to my beloved yaoi. (Which did not include Takumi-kun, mind you. I did read it later. And it's just as bad as the show, if not worse.)

I keep this image for obvious reasons. I mean the kabedon is so common in Japanese romances they invented a word for it. And this is its first appearance in BL.

After that, I actually have Junjou Pure Heart from 2010 saved. A fascinating early JBL of the atmospheric style that recently reappeared legally on Gaga (if you want watch).

Korea's Just Friends 2009

Korea started off their BL journey strong. Of all the olds on this list, Just Friends is the only one I rewatch regularly. IMHO KBL still has not climbed back to the realistic queer chemistry and gritty charm of this show. It's fantastic and it's available all over the place, including on YouTube. It's like under 30 minutes too. Frankly, you have no excuse not to watch this.

This final kiss is a masterpiece. In public?! In UNIFORM?! Will we ever see something this groundbreaking from Korea again?

Thailand's Love Sick 2014

I don't know if Love Sick stands the test of time for new BL watchers. Frankly, I don't really care. (I'm certain all the het stuff around the main BL plot line does not work. So watch the BL cut if you want.) Because look, it still works for me. I still do the occasional rewatch, over ten years later!

I will never get over the earnestness of this show.

The pure unadulterated messy high school angst of our beloved boys in blue shorts. You can see how Noh and Pun shook up a nation and started an industry.

And they did it with one lost hand hold.

Iconic.

Forever.

Possibly the greatest moment in BL history.

I don't even need to say fight me on this one. You can't. Because it's the truth.

China's Like Love (2014)

I probably reference 2016's Addicted and Irresistible Love more often but Like Love still has a place in my heart. This still is from when it up on YouTube before the 2016 crack down. Honestly? It's worth a watch if you can find it, as it is pretty typical of early CBL before said crack down. Just imagine what this kind of BL industry would have developed into without censorship.

I keep this particular still because it jogs my memory so quickly over the leads, their styles and personalities. This show hald many of China's favorite BL tropes rich/poor, jock/nerd, and a touch of whipping boy. Its legacy is HIStory Obsessed, 100%.

Taiwan's Faded (2017)

I keep a few others from Taiwan's 2017 roster like HIStory Obsessed and Red Balloon but Faded is the important one to me. Faded is a pro-marriage equality propaganda short and it is worth tracking down. It is an ICONIC piece that uses BL for queer advocacy of the kind that helped Taiwan become the first Asian country to legalize same sex marriage.

Why this shot? Look, the forehead kiss is so much a marker not just of romance but of a shift from romance as hidden, private, and sexual to romance as family unit and legal entity. A forehead kiss eludes to something sacred (the head is to be bowed, blessed, and so forth) and is enmeshed (in many Asian cultures) with elements of familial piety, class loyalty, and religious obedience. This image is emblematic of the move of queerness from a private hidden (disregarded) sphere and into public discourse and political advocacy .

Tommy (now Thalia, ty @idiot-mushroom for your amazing hcs always) is trans, realized not long after exile ended but only had the time and energy to commit to transitioning after the final confrontation. She doesn't strictly identify as transfem, it's a lot more complex than that, but settles with the label trans and does whatever the hell she wants. Ranboo helped a lot a lot with the transition

Tubbo and Ranboo are still the only two married; not that they'd be against the other two joining. Thalia's just still figuring herself out and not ready to focus on that part of her life, and Purpled doesn't feel like he's been with them long enough to take the step. Someday though

Thalia and Purpled aren't as close with each other as with others, not very emotionally or affectionately close. They tend to be each others caretakers when in need though

On that note, Purpled has not spoken about his brief alliance with Dream and Punz. At this point, he doesn't plan to.

Ranboo is probably the most affectionate with all of them evenly, they spend more time in everyone else's rooms than their own.

Tubbo is the primary caretaker of Michael, though they all pretty evenly split duties. He just likes to have the kiddo nearby, and Michael acts more and more like him as he gets to being an adolescent.

Less relationship wise and more individual characters :3

Thalia

Sharper features as she's gotten older, her facial structure changed from repeated malnutrition (pogtopia, exile). She doesn't mind though, it kind of reminds her of Niki or Jack. The gooduns

Spends the most time out of the house, still making efforts to try to clean up the server and 'find herself'. Unclear to everybody what exactly that means, but if digging around in the dirt is what she needs then so be it.

Still pretty religious, its a comforting stability after everything. Overall, she's pretty happy.

Tubbo

The messiest of them in most applicable ways. Has a hard time upkeeping hygiene, usually takes reminders to do so. It's a point of shame for him, but its hard to get in the mindset to start perceiving that stuff.

Got a fake eye made by Foolish a long while ago, he can't recall exactly when. He'd like to replace it at some point but is not in a rush- if it works, it works.

A lot a Lot of nerve damage, he doesn't have much feeling in the right side of his body. A couple of fingers are amputated and prosthetic. Tends to injure himself while welding and it freaks Ranboo the fuck out lmao

Ranboo

Memory loss and sleep problems are quite a bit worse, they don't leave the house very much because getting lost is a problem nowadays. The ender state is less of a problem at least, they've learned ways to manage it and the others have gotten better at recognizing it before he wanders off.

Terrible vision, they have glasses but lose them quite a bit. Purpled put one of those straps around the back that make it harder to just slip them off without thinking; this did not help much.

Does most of the interior decoration, they have a certain vibe they enjoy and the others do not care enough one way or another so let them have at it lol

The fall off the Needle caused bad permanent damage to his legs, he walks with braces and a cane now. It's a sensitive thing for him, he put a lot of worth into his physical capability. Still coming to terms with it; Puffy helps him with physical therapy.

Very antsy, he has a lot of unfinished projects that he picks up and discards at random. Some are builds, some are skills he's trying to hone, sometimes its just stupid challenges. He tries to make it competitive, Thalia's the only one that really takes that bait.

Possibly greyromantic, he doesn't have any specific labels because he doesn't care, but yeah

I'd like to add to this, (for some info, if you haven't seen my stuff before, I'm an academic who has completed her dissertation (and multiple rounds of scientific research), and I have tutored, and taught, undergraduate courses in her scientific field) if you want to do "accurate" research, the above tips are excellent, and I can't argue with them, but I'd like to add a few that I used to tell my students.

In academics we love "primary" sources, that is, stuff written by the researchers themselves, reported by the individuals affected, those who saw the thing (yes, eye-witness testimony!), and the writings of people who saw the thing. Each has different levels of "trust" in terms of how beneficial they can be for research, and it all depends on what you're looking for in terms of specific information.

For instance, knowing how a particular particle acts? We want the stuff written by the researchers, not testimony from the janitor who was on site (even if he was the math-wiz who figured out it would do that *ahem*). On the other hand, knowing a specific person was at a specific event? Usually we have to rely on eye witnesses as there isn't other sources (of course, there could be, film, video, paper records such as signed guest books, etc), but we would classify those a little differently (especially, and this falls into my field as a psychologist, we know how "wonky" [scientific, non-scientific word] memory can be).

To all of these, let me add some specific references that are worth knowing about, as you should be able to find information for most topics in these places:-

Wikipedia. Yes, I know your teachers probably told you "Don't use Wikipedia". What most of them are being bad about communicating with this is that Wikipedia is NOT a "Primary Source". Wikipedia HAS citations, go look those up and verify they are primary sources and use those. The wikipedia article is a good summary of things from the primary sources (in most cases... sometimes it's a bad summary, and in other cases [extremely rarely] it may actually be the primary source, but don't bet on it).

You're local library. Sounds weird to many, but your local library is likely to have access to actual sources of information that you just won't find online (even though it's likely online), because your local librarians are likely to be able to find that 1924 edition of the book you are trying to find some information from, and not give you fifteen different places for people trying to scam you out of money.

Sci-hub. If you don't know what this is, look it up on your non-google search engine of choice. I say avoid google, because google has a competing "product" that google makes money off, and they've been helping crack down on sci-hub for that reason. Also, just don't use google in general because it's gone to shit (this is my personal opinion btw, but I hear it's more common than it used to be *cough* ai results *cough*).

Now, there's also a few things you should absolutely, and utterly avoid if you are trying to find viable information.

ChatGPT. Don't. Just don't. If you don't know why, the short-form of this is ChatGPT is not even a search engine, it "hallucinates" (meaning: It lies about stuff because it doesn't know the difference between a truth and a lie, because it's not actually anything more than a complicated version of your phones predictive keyboard text).

Youtube. While I love watching youtube videos on all sorts of things, and there's some great science communicators who do a lot of good research there... until you know how to "spot the fakes" when it comes to good academic sources, youtube should only be seen as entertainment, not research. Don't trust it unless you know how to verify stuff in the first place.

Any social media "influencer". I'm sure there's a few of them who actually did pass high school educations, and I'm even sure that there's a few who went on to tertiary education and learnt some stuff... but they aren't doing their social media stuff to give you good sources, but to entertain. So... don't trust them.

There's one last entry that is.... well... can be good, can be bad, depends on the circumstances, and that's podcasts on a topic. I've listened to some podcasts that ran for years, that I figured out early on were very loose with the science, but the presented their podcast as if it was all settled science (it was about cults and the psychology of them, and as a psychologist... yeah, they were getting a few obvious things to me wrong), but I also know of podcasts run by people who are actually researchers and very knowledgeable in their field... and they all present on your favourite podcast app of choice as if they are the same thing. I recommend, if you want to use podcasts to help you find information, verify them as being good sources first. For instance, is the podcast about space and advertised on the SETI website? It's likely reasonably accurate. Is it about space and is only found under SUPERAW3S0M3 PODCASTERZZZZ!!! on <podcast app of the day>? It's likely sketchy so I wouldn't trust it. Now, having said that... I wouldn't recommend most of the psychology podcasts you can find off the APA (American Psychological Association, not American Psychiatric Association... *sigh*) website... the APA in recent years hasn't been the champion of science that they claim to be, many of us who are members are rather upset by that in fact.

Also... and here's the bonus "how to find good sources for 'amateur acadamics'", this is a fun one. I know it's relatively easy if you live in the USA, check to see if there is a local "adult education" course near you that is aimed at teaching you proper research methods. The community college I started at (and did teaching and tutoring at once I moved into graduate school), ran six week courses over summer for that, and 12 week courses (once a week, in person and online) during the regular terms. Here in Australia, the TAFE colleges generally have a similar course offering you can take as well. And if you can't find such a course? Remember the "local library" option I mentioned earlier? Yeah, librarians LOVE helping people learn how to find reliable information, and I know there's a lot of smaller libraries that would love to throw on events for things, you never know, you might ask, and they might do a couple of evening "courses" on doing that research.

Do you have any tips on doing accurate research for people without access to formal education

Sure! This can't be one size fits all for every field, but I can give some starting points for history.

If you're reading a book, here's what to consider:

1. Are there footnotes or endnotes? In academia this is our way of being transparent with each other about where you got information. If a book doesn't have them, they're more interested in telling a good story than being accountable to their peers. That's a red flag.

2. Don't trust claims that seem very specific but don't have a source. Broad claims can be the author's analysis. But specific things "so and so said this" "there was a rumor that (x)" should be coming from somewhere and it is the author's job to tell you where.

3. Look out for choppy quoting. Even if someone has a source, they may not be using it well. If someone is paraphrasing a lot and only uses bits and pieces of the text while also using a lot of ellipses, you will want to try to find the whole text to make sure it's being quoted fairly.

4. Look at the publication date. Knowledge changes with time and old books tend to be outdated. You don't have to stick to the academic rule of thumb of "25 years is the threshold for new scholarship" but do be aware that if something is over 50 years old, many many people have likely revisited and revised what it's saying. Not that new books can't also be bad and incorrect, but they tend to be working with better tools generally.

5. Look up the author. I cannot stress this one enough. The author's background and political convictions can matter a lot to how they interpret things. For example, one of the biographies people tend to pick up about my dissertation topic is from the late 1920s by a man who later applied to join the NSDAP. That fact really can't be separated from his interpretations no matter how hard people try.

6. Stop reading if someone is making a lot of moral or personal judgements on a historical figure. I'm talking about the "Elizabeth I was a frigid hag and men found her ugly"-esque takes, not things like calling historical atrocities morally bad. Does it feel like bitchy gossip? That sort of thing is unprofessional, uninformative, and means someone has an axe to grind. Spite can be motivation for research, but axe grinding shouldn't show up clearly in published work.

These are things to keep in mind to make sure you're getting better information. Others are free to add on for their field or if there's something I forgot.

One very important thing to add: professors and academics like people emailing them about their research. You can do that! You can ask for copies of pay walled articles. You just have to go through the mortifying ordeal of expressing interest in an email.

Lately I'd been wondering if maybe my asthma was doing so much better since I stopped living in a place with fire season that I could talk to my doc about stopping my asthma meds, but uh. Accidentally tested that? My maintenance inhaler was empty for at least a day, possibly more, before I realized so I was using it but getting no meds and it turns out I was improved because my maintenance meds were working, so I started coughing again. Not super bad, but like if I had a nickel for every time I've accidentally ran a double-blind trial* on myself I'd have two nickels, and that's weird, right? *the other time was when I figured out I'm allergic to acetic acid, because I'd checked the ingredients of the individual serving of a pre-made meal from a store and it was fine, but I reacted to the family meal portion of it (after not checking it, assuming the ingredients would be the same), and the only thing different was the acetic acid.

how was playing hsr? was there anything that you liked in the game and the story?

ITS BEEN AMAZING AS EXPECTED!!!!!!!!! i actually havent played genshin in a while since starting it, i have no motivation to do the filler event while a perfectly good star rail is sitting there waiting to be played :')

but for mechanics, i love they have auto battle so you dont have to nessecarily sit there and invest in every little battle you gotta do....and i love that the resin (resin??) system is a lot more forgiving with a higher cap, lower cost, and allow for overflow...thats nice...i also love that the mc and starter units are very useful. im so emotionally attatched to the star rail crew so im glad they never have to leave my team !!!!

storywise im LOVING IT SO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i started playing it at the beginning of spring break 2 weeks ago and im almost all caught up!!! i went through belabog and penacony and now im just doing those leftover intermission main quests which im only now realizing i shouldve done before going to penacony LMAO
