ngl, the more I think about it, the more I feel conflicted over how people sexualize my characters.

On the one hand, it would be silly to deny that I don't go out of my way to create aesthetically pleasing/attractive characters because I love to draw what I enjoy, and I love it when people simp for them.

But on the other hand, sometimes it does bother me that people are so fixated on sex and their own arousal that they miss important lore/plot information that I get a bit frustrated

modern family is all fun and games until you get to the scenes where you burst into tears because the once-vaguely homophobic dad now refers to his son's husband as family, and also the academically gifted daughter realizes that her dorky, clumsy dad was always really proud of her and just never surprised because he just assumed she could do anything, and also the eldest daughter who eloped comes crawling back to her parents' room and whispers that she still wants her parents to be present for her wedding, and also the anxious queer lawyer character admits that he was terrified that his husband would just leave him alone with their baby daughter, and also that the once-vaguely grouchy dad looks at his stepson and tells him that what makes a family is who sticks around, not who you're blood-related to and anyways what was i saying

saw the whole "the new Magic Schoolbus show sucks" thread for the third time today and decided to come say something tangentially related about Inspector Gadget 2015 too. something about the enshittification of reboots in general irks me and I wanted to talk about it.

not to beat a thoroughly dead horse but just look at what they did to Gadget alone.

The "real" Gadget is meant to be large and imposing, but at the same time, warm and friendly. he's a big cyborg and could easily kick your ass, but he's much more interested in being loving. he has thick, dark curly hair, unusual eyes (that are often depicted with "ring" pupils), and his facial profile is quite strong but soft. his facial expressions are deeply varied, from simple to childlike wonder to stone cold, and he's more than just a clumsy, arrogant enforcer. he has his moments of dumbass arrogance, yes, but it's not his whole personality. he's got a lot more going on there, he's naturally a gentle soul who just wants to help people. he can even get his act together in the moments it's needed, and proves why he can be called a hero even on his own. hell, even in a few select scenes, Gadget is shown having his own fears and traumas and responding to them as such.

And then 2015!Gadget is almost exact antonym to this. in modernizing him, they made him small and slim with a very different silhouette. they flattened his facial profile down so far he doesn't look like the same man. they took the curls out his hair and straightened it, they made his eyes blank, glassy (to sell that he's a cyborg?? it looks weird) and expressionless, and his facial expressions aren't very varied. plus, he's kind of unlikeable. he has none of his prior charm or warmth, and most of what he does is either being an annoying prick, being a destructive prick, or being a whiny prick. Not to say his original counterpart couldn't be annoying, destructive or whiny of course, but definitely not in such parts. they tout him as being fearless, but then make him a coward who doesn't even try half the time.

they took everything that made Gadget more than just a baseline trope, and took it away. I'm not even saying the 80s show was perfect, it was FAR from perfect. but it at least had something built up, and the 2015 show came and pulled it all down again. kind of says something when your original show still reigns supreme over two modernized reboots, several failed projects, two films and any and all attempts at adding onto the lore.

And the animation is godawful so that's just more salt in the wound lol

ffxiv garlemald discourse is so funny because people will go "ugh people just cant stand it when things aren't black and white" and then you look at how the empire are portrayed in stormblood and shadowbringers and its like hm. that seems like a pretty intense and accurate display of violent imperialism to me! Wow I wonder why people in this day and age may find it hard to feel sympathy for them or even hate them on principal. god its such a mystery.

the games like 50/50 to me on how it tackles these themes because I actually like the garlemald arc in EW, I think it has a lot of horrific and powerful scenes depicting how self destructive fascist propaganda and beliefs are, but I also think it doesn't go far enough on some fronts. the garleans' xenophobia is most notably and obstacle to getting them to accept the contingent's help, which is what they're there to do,

but there's never an admission of harm from any garleans on the uuuuuuuuh massive amount of war crimes the nations around them are still suffering from they're just kind of like "we misjudged you...but you actually wanted to help us all along" like yeah thats great now can we get you all some deprogramming because you keep talking about returning to your prime and glory days and I think we need to unpack some stuff you really SHOULDNT return to. im not even really talking about EW proper but the patches where things are a bit more chilled out and people are recovering.

It feels like they wanted to have their critique of imperialism and also have things end with the beauty of human connection and reaching out and these things just don't mesh well because hey a lot of your modern day audience is not gonna like having to treat people yelling xenophobic things at the cast and your character with kid gloves after you showed them hours and hours of the awful things these people's beliefs have done. especially in the present day hoo boy.

I know several people who like LOVE seasons 5-7 (11th doctors run) and think the storylines and moffats writing are brilliant and I don't get it!!! what am I missing??? why does literally every single episode have the exact same stakes: Rory/Amy/the doctor is dead. forever. so dead. but wait!!! what if they aren't!!! why do so many of the explanations for why they're not actually dead feel so rushed like they were added at the last minute!! why does every single queer character act kind of weird and awkward about being queer!! why does the doctor casually say that women are inferior when no one's around!!! what the fuck!! hello!!!

got my grades back for my courses last semester and most of it was to be expected, mostly A's, maybe an A-, etc. but i honestly can't get over the fact that my independent study (the buddy cole documentary) was for some reason given a B. like sure getting a B isn't bad per se, I usually get at least one B every semester and i honestly don't really care about what my exact gpa is as long as i can graduate, but come on. this school put me through months of psychological torment over this project and didn't even have the nerve to give me a B+??? i'm still coping with the self-doubt they forced on me and this bullshit is not helping!!

Not sure yet :') being in this fandom takes such a huge toll on me when shit hits the fan that i cant really justify to myself staying and being invested in the same capacity as I have been. However I love my mutuals and this community too damn much to just up and leave completely 😭 for now im gonna take a break from tumblr and just give it some time. I could never leave tumblr fully though I fear I'm a yapper at heart so maybe I'll just end up posting about whatever. I really don't know ! I'll figure it out !!
