Cards with the Count

Thinking about how Jonathan is trying to pass the time during Vampire Hell Staycation with all the books in the library (a guaranteed Dracula Zone), no stationery (bastard), and a finite amount of secret pen ink and secret diary pages left at his disposal (shit). Reading and writing and art are all out. What’s left?

I like to think, in this order:

1)    He remembers that he has a pack of playing cards in the general luggage Dracula didn’t snatch. A gift Lucy had bestowed on him and Mina, a pack apiece, as she insisted that it was the best way to pass an hour in dreary company that wasn’t to do with gossip or politics.

2)    He doesn’t normally play, if only because he doesn’t have the coin to meet any real gambling stranger at a table. Just a ‘for fun’ thing.

3)    Fuck it. Solitaire. Card towers. It’s something to keep his mind off the…everything.

4)    He gets exactly one (1) day/evening of peace with this. Then:

5)    “Whatever are you up to, my friend?” 

(He didn’t even use the door to give Jonathan time to hide the pack. Misted in. No shadow to give him away. Fantastic.) Jonathan staples his smile back in place and rattles off something apologetic, so sorry, was he keeping the Count waiting? Let him just put this away, he wouldn’t be interested—

6)    Smash cut to the library. The cards are now unofficially confiscated/a staple of the Dracula Zone, alongside the fancy crystal chessboard the Count loves to crush him with on a semi-regular basis. Jonathan is walking him through the rules of sundry card games. Unsurprisingly, he latches onto the concept of American poker readily. The game is a soup of similar European predecessors that light up his eyes with recognition—primero, poque, brelan—sewn together with England’s game of brag into a medley of the initial rules, both written and unwritten.

7)    “A game of skill, then?”

“Skill, acting, and luck.”

Dracula grins as he produces a ransom of gold coins to use as chips. Jonathan deals. 

(What are the extra rules here? Does he throw every hand? Does he play in earnest and inevitably lose anyway? Does it even matter? It isn’t chess, after all. Not a proper strategy game. Cards happen. Guesswork happens. A winner and loser every turn. What does it matter?)

8)    Jonathan realizes two dozen hands later that what matters is, apparently, his face. One that, likewise apparently, cannot be read by the Count in this game. Out of those two dozen hands, Jonathan has won eighteen. Of those eighteen, his hand was the clear dud for nine. Through it all, Dracula’s eyes keep jumping from his own hand to Jonathan’s tired gaze. When Jonathan wins the twenty-fifth hand and the mountain of gold on his side of the table risks toppling off the edge, Dracula bites out a word Jonathan is sure is too caustic to have a spot in the lost polyglot dictionary.

9)    “You have a gift for schooling your face, my friend.” Every word is an icicle; each as sharp as the canines jutting out of the rictus grin.

“I don’t,�� Jonathan says. 

And it’s true. Now he’s schooling his face—first lesson of anyone destined for the realm of serving others—but in the game, he’s barely thinking of anything else beyond the ticking of the clock. To punctuate this, he slides the heap of gold back to Dracula’s side of the table. 

“This is only a game for the fun of it. In a game with stakes, there would be something worth playing and worrying for. When you get to England,” his face is very, very schooled as he says this, “you’ll find a much more varied competition at gambling tables. The players who really train their expressions can do so with fortunes at stake, while novices reveal every victory or loss plainly on their face.”

10) Dracula considers this. And smiles.

11) “Ah, then there must be stakes before we can play the game properly. Still, you have won the bulk of these rounds, my friend—” his hand seems like it wants to be strangling something when it drums atop the gold heap, “—and done me the charity of not taking your rightful winnings.” He throws down his cards. Ace and deuce of spades. “I shall have to speak with the kitchen about producing a stand-in prize.” 

He leaves. Jonathan doesn’t blink when he hears the door lock behind him. A card pyramid is erected.

12) Paprika hendl for supper. As excellent as he remembers. Huzzah.

13) The next time he’s herded into the library, he sees what looks suspiciously like his travel paraphernalia flimsily hidden behind a bit of drapery. Dracula is shuffling the deck.

14) “A true prize on the table this time, my friend. I know you are one to appreciate the splendor of our beautiful country, just as I know it is, for your own safety, quite impossible to go exploring alone in the wild. Too many wolves about. But if you win the majority tonight, I shall see to it that my driver takes a leave from his own many errands to escort you beyond the castle for a time, if you so wish.”

“…And if I lose the majority?” He can’t help it: “I’m sure there’s little from me you’d be interested in.”

Dracula grins.

“We shall think of something, I’m certain. Here. Deal.”

15) As expected, Jonathan’s face isn’t effortlessly unreadable in its misery anymore. He has something to play for, even if his trust in Dracula’s dangling carrot on the stick is nigh nonexistent. He loses more. He struggles more. He worries more…

16) …But the wins and losses remain surprisingly even. On into the dawn they play, matching victory for victory. Even the Count seems puzzled. Jonathan is just tired. He was never going to win. The ‘driver’ will fall to some mysterious ailment, his possessions will disappear the moment he’s sent out of the room ahead of the Count. To Hell with it.

17) “I forfeit. We remain tied, so neither has to lose.” A sour smile curls. “Besides, I have kept you up too late again.”

“One more.”

“We can say you won—,”

Dracula gives him a Look.

Jonathan sits again. Plays again.

Wins again.

Dracula hisses several words the polyglot dictionary would be scandalized to translate. Jonathan feels the first genuine smile he’s wanted to make in a month and a half try to creep up on his lips, and stifles it.

18) Dracula turns over his cards and thumbs though the deck as if looking for a conspirator. He even scowls at Jonathan’s forearms, both bare through the whole game as he’d rolled up his sleeves. Still grumbling, his thumbnail finally hooks a card that makes a cloud pass over his face.

19) “What. Is this?”

Jonathan looks.

“Oh, that’s just a Joker.”

“Joker?”

“Yes, I thought I’d taken him out. He’s not a usable card in this game, but he’s sometimes used as a trump or wild card in others. That is, he’s there to turn the tide for whoever gets to play him.”

Jonathan reaches for the card to tuck it back in the box. Dracula pulls it out of reach, walks to the fireplace, and flicks it into the flames.

“Say what you will, but I recognize a symbol of sabotage when I see it. It should not be in the deck at all!” Still watching the little harlequin turn to cinders, he flaps his other hand at Jonathan. “Go rest, my friend. Take that infernal game with you. It is not a respectable pastime for men of our like.”

20) Jonathan gathers up the deck, gives his travel kit a last mournful look, and leaves for his bedroom, knowing not to ask after the walk in the forest as he goes. In his bed, he empties the deck into his hand again and thinks on four things.

Skill.

Acting.

Luck.

And…

21) He turns the deck’s neglected second Joker over in his fingers, the impish face seeming to hold a secret in its grin.

22) When he wakes next, he isn’t surprised to find the deck has been stolen. It doesn’t trouble him. Somehow, it even produces a tired grin on his face. It nearly matches the painted thing hidden, wild and powerful, in the pages of his journal.

Sometimes as you’re speaking you’ll use a word or phrase and see him have a genuine physical reaction to it

Head askew, eyebrow lifted, lips pressed together

When he feels confused, his expression says it more quickly than his words

Any time you mispronounce a word, he genuinely needs to butt in and correct you

Call it semantics or pedantics or whatever you want, he can not and will not let it go

If you’re fumbling over words or can’t think of the specific one you want to say, he’ll try to help by throwing out suggestions

Most of the time, he’s right on the money, almost impossibly so

You’ve jokingly accused him of using his tech to read your mind, but he hasn’t… probably

He’s just an intuitive fellow who loves his context clues

Hand gestures while you’re talking help him figure out what you mean

You two could go back and forth in a conversation of mostly hand gesticulations

He keeps a list of any regional or culturally specific words you use, partially so he has them for future reference, partially because he finds them endearing

If you ever find it, though, he will insist that it is strictly for the former

Nope, no sentimental value to it at all

Mikey: 

Mikey is a highly empathetic person, so whenever he doesn’t know what you’re saying or you don’t know what you’re trying to say, he’s understanding about it

He sits patiently and calmly as you work through your words

Likewise, he waits until after you finish speaking your sentiments to ask for clarification

Now, Mikey may be a compassionate little guy, but he can also be a menace (still to be determined if he is intentionally or incidentally that way)

Instead of specifying what he doesn’t get, he endlessly repeats

“Huh?... Huh?”

He does this until you physically shake him back to reality

In general, he is extravagantly generous with his compliments

Whether it be about appearance or personality traits, he absolutely loves showering people in praise

The same goes for you and your voice

Even when your accent occasionally confuses your conversation, he still loves your pronunciation of the words

And you can trust that he’s vocal about it

He might ask you to repeat a word just so he can hear you say it again

He just loves y̶o̶u̶ your voice that much

Leo: 

Leo is a giggler

No matter the situation, serious or silly, he’s always quick to crack a joke or pun or just laugh

When Leo doesn’t understand something you said, you’ll know

You can always tell by the purely mischievous grin that commandeers his features

You’ll be talking normally when all of a sudden you have to pause because that man will not stop smirking

When you ask him what the issue is, he slowly repeats whatever you mispronounced, hints of lighthearted condescension hiding in his tone

Somehow he asks you to repeat yourself in the most puzzling ways possible

“Run that back real quick?”

“Run what back?”

Leo may lightly tease you for saying something wrong, but he usually knows how far he can push and still be lighthearted

Although, if he ever oversteps with his teasing, he will apologize profusely, insisting that he finds it sweet

If you ever feel insecure about your accent or the unorthodox words you use, he picks up on it, immediately drops his teasing, and talks with you about how awesome you and your characteristics are

Even though he chuckles at any odd words you say, it’s never out of malice

He just finds it endearing

Raph:

Out of all of the brothers, Raph has the most experience interacting with people who come from all kinds of backgrounds with all kinds of voices

He’s always the one to go on patrols

Or talk with business owners when him and his brothers are at a restaurant

Or sneak into Times Square disguised in a hippopotamus costume to buy his father a robe

Either way, he’s been exposed to a multitude of accents

He even has one himself

With all that being said, it is abundantly clear that he is highly understanding of your odd pronunciations, even when he can’t understand you

He always waits until you finish your sentence or thought before incredibly bashfully correcting your pronunciation or asking for you to repeat yourself

Just to repeat it for emphasis, he is extremely shy while doing this

Shuffling his feet, clearing his throat, twiddling his thumbs

He just doesn’t want to frustrate you

However, he knows that he would want to be corrected if he made an error, so he finds it only decent to extend that same liberty to you

Raph occasionally giggles when your accent muddles your meaning

He doesn’t mean to, and does try to conceal his laughter, but sometimes he can’t help himself

It’s adorable- er, he means hilarious

He always specifies afterward that he was laughing at the situation, never at you and your wonderful traits

The first time you met him, you were five years old, at a meeting, attending a prestigious school for gifted children. Tenya was standing across the room, observing his surroundings with his family, and when the two of you made eye contact, you shyly glanced away while he smiled.

You didn't tend to make friends, and Tenya put people off because of his odd way of speaking and bizarre arm movements. However, you found them endearing, and over the course of your elementary school years, you grew closer and had each other's back.

When the time came for you to advance to the next grade, you felt saddened that you would be separated from Tenya. But fate had other plans, and you, yet again, found yourself attending another school together. You happened to bump into him while trying to navigate through the crowd of fellow students. He was happy to see you. "It's quite astounding that we should meet again! However, I am quite honored to have you by my side once more!"

The two of you shared various hobbies. In fact, it was you who introduced Tenya to the wonders of encyclopedias and since then, he committed to them. Others might think he only read them because of his intelligence but the truth was, he read them because they reminded him of you, his dearest friend.

"I wish to make my family lineage proud and attend Yuuei to become a hero!" You'd be shocked at his confession if it weren't the same thing you wanted to do. But you remained silent as he took your hands, and your heart raced as he looked at you and said, "Forgive me if I am being rather forward. However, I want to request that you enroll at Yuuei as well. Regardless of whether we are separated into different departments does not matter because I do not want to lose you."

It wasn't until you witnessed Tenya during the entrance exams that you realized your attraction to him. His built physique and agility had you smitten, and this was the origin of your feelings for him. Likewise, despite ending up in the general studies department, Tenya's feelings for you shifted into a more romantic sense when he witnessed how hard you worked on your academic studies.

Apart from the obvious mutual attraction you felt for one another, neither of you confessed your feelings for fear of ruining your friendship. But those around you seemed to notice the romantic tension in the air whenever you two were together. Of course, every time someone questioned either of you, there was denial.

The first time you tried to kiss him was during the winter when you slipped and scraped your knee on a patch of ice. Tenya offered to carry you to the bathroom where he could properly dress and treat the scrape. He was so gentle when he was applying antiseptic that you couldn't help but lean forward with the intention to kiss him but ended up bumping heads instead.

Your first actual kiss was during the first-year prom dance, the lighting gave a romantic atmosphere as did the soft music. Tenya looked handsome in his blue suit, and his eyes sparkled in the darkened light. You couldn't help but lean forward, and to your surprise, he followed, and a spark came when your lips collided.

"Are you certain you wish to proceed with this…" he cleared his throat, "step in our relationship?" He was happy that the two of you had shared that wonderful kiss and had, at the same time, nonverbally expressed your feelings for one another. But he was still concerned that romance would ruin your friendship.

You managed to help Tenya through his worries and proved that despite your long-life friendship, the two of you were indeed romantically compatible. It was shortly after this that Tenya began to envision your future together. He, as a pro hero, and you by his side with the potential of expanding the Iida family.

Was thinking about this parallel and “Claudia and Rayla refusing to let Callum and Viren die in S4″ and general S4 parallel shenanigans, turning them over in my brain like a rotisserie chicken, and realized it goes much deeper (and the four of them unfortunately don’t have a group foils tag, as why it ends why it always ends currently excludes Callum) and this isn’t going to be super coherent because I’m sleepy and am going to do my best to keep this short but

What the Fuck I Think Is Up with Callum-Rayla Viren-Claudia in S4, or the Interlocking of the Cycle’s Wheel

Let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way

Viren-Callum parallels, yeah, we’ve known that since 1x01 or at the very least 1x02, we’re gouda

Raydia parallels with their dads who ask them to do shady stuff and then can’t stop them from continuing to do shady stuff, we knew that

Viren and Claudia / Callum and Rayla being reunited after two years apart by Claudia and Rayla’s efforts

Callum and Claudia being contrasted by doing major feats of magic in order to save Viren and Rayla in 3x09

Rayla and Claudia being contrasted in 3x09 by being Viren’s killer and saviour respectively 

Rayla and Claudia paralleling the way they continue to push at their current missions in Through the Moon and 4x02 even when Callum / Viren are doubtful or wanting to take a different path, both going on a quest into Xadia to ensure Viren’s death / survival in doing so

Viren and Rayla ultimately being unable to diverge in 4x09 with Rayla running after him with only one sword and Viren picking up his staff after a season of likewise rejecting / being hesitant about it

Viren-Rayla parallels with their paranoia and practicality and ruining their own lives, more subtle but still absolutely there

Claudia and Rayla rejecting Viren / Callum’s plans for their deaths in 4x02 and 4x07

The Viren-Claudia-Rayla parallels just to cover all our bases

With all of that out of the way let’s get into it

So like I said, both Viren and Callum talk to Claudia and Rayla about wanting to die this season for ‘the greater good’ of their lives, and both times, each respective girl wholeheartedly rejects it quite harshly after a moment of softening

Okay, seems simple enough. But here’s where things get a little more complicated. Claudia, after all, doesn’t know how dangerous Aaravos is, but Rayla does, and yet they make similar calls here. Claudia refuses to let her dad die, even if she has to drag him along the whole time, and Rayla refuses to let Callum die, let alone by her own hand. They’re weighing their loved one against something possibly dangerous or unknown, something that has certainly been detrimental to both of them and leading to serious trauma of things they deem overall better left unsaid

and still choosing the loved one.

Okay, still pretty simple. Shit isn’t interlocking or overlapping too much. But then 4x04 comes along with the way it parallels Claudia and Callum explicitly as Aaravos’ most overt pawns in a lot of ways

and scenes of Viren and Callum waking up to find Terry and Rayla sobbing in the middle of the night (4x04 and 3x04) and offering words in response: “Rayla, it’s okay [to cry]” and “Get a grip,” reinforcing the way Viren and Callum have been shutting down this mix of love and pain, trying not to feel things at all. We know from later on in the season that part of this advice stems from worry over Claudia for Viren

and what Callum was doing until he arguably broke down fully in 4x09 and let himself fully feel a lot of what he’s been repressing all season long by embracing Rayla

But it goes deeper than that, with 4x07 and Viren’s nightmares also confirming that Viren still feels guilt over what Claudia has gone through thanks to his death and involvement with Aaravos, even after 4x02

Likewise, 4x07 also foreshadows / shows that one of the people Callum is most worried about hurting is Rayla because this shot is about as overt as it can be

Like Viren, Callum is worried about being a pawn in Aaravos’ game and how he may hurt the people around him, while Viren worries he already has; Callum is aware he may be becoming like Claudia, pushed further down a dark path he’s previously rejected, and caught up just as unknowingly as her in Aaravos’ web in so many ways

Callum and Claudia have already done whatever it takes to save their loved ones (dark magic for Rayla and Soren; their juxtaposed saving of their loved one who fell off the Storm Spire as cited earlier in 3x09); Viren, Claudia, and Rayla have all done deplorable things in hopes of protecting / saving their loved ones, as Viren also cites in 4x04:

But there is an aching pain mixed with love that you feel in these moments. I have always been ready to do anything to protect my family, however dangerous, however vile. In the name of love, you may commit acts so unforgivable... you will never forgive yourself. 

Mirroring what Rayla says in her letter and what Claudia said earlier (“I had to do things...”) and indeed a line from Bloodmoon Huntress about Rayla’s best friend at the time, a tiny adoraburr

but it’s something more important than that. I’M GOING TO KEEP YOU SAFE. I have to. I love you too much not to. [...] sometimes, we make sacrifices so that the ones we love don’t have to. It’s part of protecting them—part of protecting you. Taking on hard choices and going to dark places is an act of love. It’s a gift. So, please let me give you this gift, Callum. Stay safe, and stay in the light. Don’t follow me, and don’t look for me. I don’t think you’ll find me, anyway.

The river’s fast, but you’re basically my best friend. I wouldn’t let anything happen to you. No matter what it took.

Viren has typically been confident he’s making the right choice; Rayla worries over making the wrong one; Callum is anxious about having no choice; and Claudia is triggered by having to choose at all. 

All of this to say: they all have the same core, explicit, and opposing desires to save the people they love. Rayla still wants to kill Viren and protect Callum, and keep him from becoming a pawn in Aaravos’ game; Viren fears that Claudia will be turned into a pawn and wants to keep her safe from the danger he’s put her in; Callum is worried that he may put Rayla in danger due to Aaravos’ hold on him; and it seems like little to nothing will ever deter Claudia from saving her father, permanently. They are all more terrified of losing/hurting the other more than anything. 

Viren has an incentive to not want Aaravos loose to try to protect his daughter; Claudia has an incentive to free Aaravos in order to save her father. Rayla will already likely save Callum from Aaravos’ brainwashing, either too late (leading to Callum playing his part) or just in time, since as she stated, she’ll do whatever it takes to save him. However, that doesn’t answer entirely how Aaravos gets out or how Callum could play into his hands even without the brainwashing, unless it’s for someone he loves, like Rayla. After all: 

All of this to say S4 absolutely Fucks and I love it so much and I cannot wait for the next season to see how this collision course of love and messiness is going to turn out, and for the one who turns the Wheel of the Cycle to finally get to spin it himself.

THREE PAGES YALL

It got a little away from me

Playing favorites as a teacher is generally frowned upon, but you can’t help it. There’s something about Jane Hopper that brings out the maternal instinct in you. She starts halfway through the year after being adopted by the town chief of police. You’ve never met the man but thought that he had to be a wonderful person just based on the fact that he adopted an older kid. 

She’s always so nervous around the other kids and often hangs back after class so she doesn't get so overwhelmed. A few weeks after her first day you come back to your classroom after school to find her hiding in the corner having a panic attack. You don’t say anything, just sit next to her and start talking about your day. You tell her all about how you accidentally blew a snot bubble in front of the principal that morning in the breakroom and how you felt that you'd have to quit and change your name and were able to get her to smile. 

Hopper picks her up a while later, and you wave them off after making sure she made it to the car. You don’t know it, but that’s the first day she tells him about you. She tells him how nice you were and how you always seem to look after her, and even though he hasn't met you yet he can’t help but feel grateful that she has you at school. 

After that day, you keep an even closer eye on Jane. You know that children can sometimes be cruel and put a stop to any teasing you see. You had a no-bullying policy anyway, but the fact that they would go after someone as nice as Jane made you angry. 

Once she was more comfortable with you, she introduces you to her friends. You think she’s a wonderful fit for the group, and love their dynamic. It fills your heart with so much warmth to see them together. 

You start sending Jane home with little notes about how you think she is doing. You know that he’s busy a lot and sometimes picks her up late, but you want him to know that she’s doing ok. He doesn’t respond at first, but one day Jane happily approaches you before class with a note from him and a twinkle in her eye. It’s a thank you for fixing a missing button she had on one of her jackets, and it makes you smile for the rest of the day. It’s still some time before you get to meet him face to face. 

It’s parent-teacher conferences and you’ve been dreading it for weeks. Of course, you don’t have a choice in the matter and have to grin and bear it. You deal with days worth of disinterested parents and flirting fathers trying to get their rowdy sons out of trouble. The only thing you have to look forward to is finally meeting Chief Hopper. He’s your last appointment of the day and it makes it feel like the day dragged on. 

You’re sitting at your desk writing some notes when he knocks on the open door. You turn to greet him and have to stop yourself from dropping your jaw. He’s much more attractive than you thought, with a large frame and equally sized mustache that he really pulls off. And god, does he make that uniform look good.

You snap out of it and smile brightly at him, standing up to shake his hand. 

“Hi! You must be Chief Hopper. It’s nice to finally meet you.” You tell him, shaking his hand firmly. He stares at you with a slightly slackened jaw and you clear your throat awkwardly. He quickly pulls his hand away and removes his hat. 

“Um, likewise, ma’am.” He responds awkwardly. You motion for him to take a seat and sit down yourself, grabbing Jane’s file to review. 

“This is really just a formality,” you tell him happily. He raises his eyebrows at you and you continue, “Jane is doing really well! Even if she could use a little extra help on her spelling and grammar sometimes, she’s a quick learner. And just between you and me, she’s also my best student.” You send him a wink and he looks so proud of her that it makes you want to swoon. 

“I wanted to thank you for everything you’ve done for her.” He responds. “She didn’t have the best… childhood and is having a little trouble fitting in, but she says you are one of her favorite things about school.” You smile happily, trying not to tear up at the thought of making a positive difference in her life. 

“You have no idea how happy that makes me.” You tell him softly. You talk for a few more minutes about different assignments and upcoming projects before moving to other things going on in your lives. You both sit there and laugh with each other for longer than you should have when the meeting comes to a close. He stands and you follow, walking him to the door, not wanting the meeting to be over. 

“It was nice to finally meet you,” you tell him with a smile. He smooths his mustache down his thumb and pointer finger and smiles back at you. “Likewise.” He says. 

You stand there awkwardly before he suddenly blurts out, ”Would um-” He winces visibly in embarrassment. 

“I don’t know if I’m overstepping or not but would you like to go out for a few drinks?” He asks hesitantly. You’re surprised and hesitate, which he takes as rejection. He nods sadly and places his hat back on his head. 

“I shouldn’t,” you start, and he purses his lips slightly. “But I really want to.” He glances back up at you in shock and you grin at him. “Meet me at Lou’s tonight at 9?” You ask him. He nods quickly before trying to hide a grin.

Describe their first date.

Hallvard and Tomas’ first date was a very simple lunch date. It really wasn’t much of a first date as they didn’t go anywhere and do anything but they did sneak off away from Bi-Han and Kuai Liang to have lunch alone. Hallvard was the one who asked Tomas out after confiding in his closest ally, Bi-Han, and asking his advice on what to do. Bi-Han had suggested lunch together as they were all still quite young and not yet allowed in the village at the base of the temple. At first Tomas had no idea why Hallvard wanted to have lunch alone with him but after the younger boy confesses his feelings Tomas pieces things together. He doesn’t return Hallvard’s feelings right away though, Tomas doesn’t know how he feels about men, women or anyone for that matter but he was flattered his friend was so interested. He continues to have lunch with Hallvard and he too goes to Bi-Han for help sorting out his feelings, it’s rough being the oldest and most experienced of the bunch; and gradually realizes while he likes men and women but he also likes Hallvard as more than a friend.

How often do they say “I love you”?

Hallvard is more lovey dovey and more affectionate in general than Tomas is and he often tells Tomas he loves him. For Tomas it’s usually reserved for leaving on a dangerous mission and coming home from one. It’s not that Tomas doesn’t love Hallvard he’s just not as talkative as Hallvard is, Hallvard is quite boisterous and an open book so there’s no hiding anything for him. Hallvard is totally a Golden Retriever boyfriend and showers Tomas in words of affection and attention to the point it gets embarrassing for Tomas. Especially when Bi-Han parrots Hallvard in order to tease Tomas, Bi-Han might be a good older brother and might be supportive of their relationship but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to tease both of them mercilessly.

How do they keep in contact when they’re apart? Do they write letters, talk on the phone, or simply wait out the time?

Technology is not huge for the Lin Kuei in this timeline (or at least it doesn’t appear to be) so they communicate by carrier pigeons and other birds. Hallvard often sends frivolous birds with sweet little messages like “miss you”, “love you”, “thinking of you” while Tomas sends practical messages like “here are my coordinates”, “target sighted” and “target terminated”. Every so often though on long missions Tomas will give into Hallvard’s affectionate messages and send him similar ones in return. Tomas definitely does better with separation than Hallvard does.

How do they care for each other when one of them is wounded/sick?

Being professional thieves and assassins both men spend a lot of time injured and both have a very good knowledge of how to treat said injuries. Due to the nature of his powers being based largely on self inflicted wounds and being injured in general Hallvard is almost always in most need of care. Tomas has spent many a night not so happily stitching his boyfriend back up, he understands that Hallvard has to be injured to tap into his power but that doesn’t mean Tomas has to like it. He’s very tender and soft during these moments and is very meticulous when tending to Hallvard. Likewise Hallvard is just as attentive treating Tomas’ injuries but luckily Tomas doesn’t get injured very often. When Tomas got his nasty scar over his eye however he was so scared and terrified trying to treat it. He was so worried that his eye was permanently damaged and there was so much blood. Hallvard might have struggled pretty hard to hold back his panicked tears as he cleaned and dressed it and may have cries in the bathroom afterwards. He can be quite emotional for a big scary assassin.

Is their relationship a secret? If so, why?

Yes. Bi-Han and Kuai Liang know about their relationship but the rest of the Lin Kuei have no clue. People definitely have their suspicions but no one is stupid enough to start anything with the Grandmaster’s younger brother. Their relationship is primarily a secret because while homosexuality isn’t forbidden in the Lin Kuei it’s also not the normal. Tomas is also a relatively private person and would rather not announce to the world he and Hallvard are together, the people who are important to him know and that’s good enough for him. Hallvard on the other hand finds it hard not to let things slip and has almost called Tomas pet names in public hundreds of times. When he does screw up he plays it off and being a “foreign thing” he’s usually reasonably convincing but he has definitely gotten strange looks.

I was thinking about HTTYD: The Hidden World, and some of the themes people seem to miss from the ending-- the whole concept of a short-lived golden era of wonder the world isn't ready for, but hopefully will be someday.

And it kind of reminded me of Arthurian lore and, more generally, the classic King in the Mountain archetype.

As someone who enjoys exploring literary motifs, I thought you might have some ideas about this?

If anything I think people fail to notice how little the movies actually talk about coexistence through Hiccup as opposed to Hiccup's goal every movie being about bringing an end to violence, when you get down to it. In the first movie even once bonding with Toothless, Hiccup never thinks that humans and dragons can live together. He goes into the Kill Ring to try and show that there's another way once he realizes dragons are controlled and equally victims, stating, "Put an end to this; I have to try" and "We don't have to kill them." Cohabitation on a widespread level was something that the Berkians decided on independently of him when he was asleep / recovering. That doesn't mean Hiccup doesn't want humans and dragons to live together - he absolutely does - but the first movie is far more centred on

Likewise, the second movie also isn't about co-habitation, although it's starting to get there. For example, Hiccup doesn't say to Drago that dragons deserve even to be treated kindly / to love in community with humans. What they disagree on is the role dragons play in the lives of humans: "Dragons, they are kind, amazing creatures, that can bring people together" "Or tear them apart." Likewise, Valka never believed that no humans could live in harmony with dragons, only that it was a limited few ("some of us are just born different") and that you had to submit to draconic ways rather than finding a middle ground, like Berk. It's also worth noting how little Berk does to protect the dragons / the humans do in general in the climax. Whereas in the first movie the kids were equally in the battle, the side characters are side lined until Hiccup frees Toothless, and Toothless gets the rest of the dragons on board. Rebuilding is a joint effort, but ending the violence successfully is not

Finally, HTTYD3 makes co-habitation an actual hardcore theme, and has a villain who is logistically and ideologically opposed to Hiccup's life's work: "You would have them live among us, as equals?" That's why the ending is so important, because it's Hiccup realizing that dragons aren't equals - they're better than humans, and just like he doesn't try to change Grimmel's mind because of Drago, it processes that humans will bring misery to dragons through involvement and constant chaos. It's Hiccup realizing he's entrapped in his own cycle.

Which is to say: the movies are obsessed with Endings and bringing about the ends of cycles of violence and upheaval. Letting the dragons be free in safety from human terror is perfectly in line with this theme. It's why the first and last noteworthy thing Hiccup does is the exact same:

He lets a dragon go.

He sets a dragon free.

a different kind of martyr

Some 17 years ago, I had to find my patron saint. Most Orthodox don't pick their own; it's generally assigned at birth or close enough it amounts to the same thing. But when I converted as an adult, I got to choose saints for myself, my kids, and (as it turned out) my wife.

You have to feel the sarcasm dripping off that "got to"--I don't do intuition or spiritual experiences, so it was not a welcome opportunity. Maybe if I'd realized that it didn't have to be forever, it would have felt a little less daunting. There's no particular reason you can't have a special connection with more than one saint; and in my case, I had the perfect opportunity to switch if I'd wanted to. Due to a clerical oversight, our baptismal certificates weren't processed until I thought to ask more than a decade later; and in the event, they accidentally assigned my son's patron to both of us on paper. But I'm nothing if not committed, so I have no interest in changing--even if there's no formal documentation, even if he might not be real, even if his story is grossly problematic for Christian unity.

Looking back over my list of reasons, it's nice to see that most of them need no revision, except this one:

Sort of related to the previous connection, he was martyred by Catholic missionaries. I'll say to start out that this doesn't inspire in me a hatred for Catholics. But it does speak to both the "Western" chauvinism that infused colonial efforts and the tendency in "Western" Christianity to discount the authenticity of the "Eastern" faith. (I'm using quotes here, because in this case the Orthodox are coming from the West and Catholics are coming from the East.) I would say this tendency applies just as much to Protestantism, whatever one might say about whether Protestants would have martyred Peter for refusing to convert. I suspect I'm always going to have to deal with my fellow Euro-Americans questioning the legitimacy of my Orthodox faith, and it will be good to have a saint who understands so intimately that struggle.

I think I've come around to a more balanced view of Eastern and Western problems, as I noted six years ago when I had a chance to visit Mission San Gabriel. Russian colonialism wasn't necessarily any better than Spanish; it sent native Alaskans 3000 miles from home to California and provoked a clash of empires that ground them to dust. Likewise, Eastern Christianity has made more than its fair contribution to religious strife. And as an Orthodox Christian born and bred in the West, I get to own both sides.

I still love St. Peter, because he's not to blame for any of this; he was a victim of circumstance, but his simple faith still speaks for itself. He wasn't trying to convert anyone or win points in a war; he just wanted to be heard and seen for who he was. The problem comes when we use his legacy to further our own prejudice.

Perhaps an analogy would help. There's been a long-standing problem with Christians using the "Christ killer" label against Jewish people throughout history. Now, it is true that Jewish people killed Christ, or at least wanted him dead. Not all of them, or even most of them. And Jesus himself and his disciples were also Jewish. But the point is certainly made in Scripture that Jewish people killed him. And if we leave it there, we might feel it's a justifiable claim. But we have to ask why it's framed this way at a time when Christianity was still very much a Jewish movement. He came as the Jewish Messiah, and his own people--those who should have received him--called for his death. That's relevant not because they're Jewish (as one race among others), but because they were his own people. The Christian response should not be to assign blame but to ask, if we are his people, how do we put him to death by our actions? If it comes to assigning labels, then we are the Christ killers.

Now, here's the analogy: if Peter the Aleut was tortured and killed by some Catholics in California, what does that mean? Why is it important that they were Catholics? Any Christian martyr can be killed for their faith by pagans or Muslims or atheists, and die with a great confession of Christ on their lips. But St. Peter died for his faith at the hands of Christians, who didn't need an equal-to-apostle to introduce them to Jesus. And while they may have missed some important points, they already had their own martyrs to show them the way of the cross. St. Peter's great witness was that he died at the hands of Christians--that after the law and the prophets and the gospel and 1500 years of Christian civilization, we could still so easily commit the original sin of fratricide. That in the name of Jesus, who showed us how to lay down life for our brothers, we could take their life instead. That we could travel half-way around the world to carry the gospel, meet Christians coming the other way around, and plant our flag through their heart to claim we got here first.

The meaning of St. Peter's death is not that, as we always knew, those Catholics are evil. It is a mirror to show us how miserably we all fail in our witness to Christ. To show how our cause blinds us to the person before us. To question whether we're really fighting for God's truth or for our own scrap of territory. If his death has meaning, it can only be that we killed him.

Coming from a place of bias personal standpoint it'd be nice for my oc Sishel to get more attention if only so I can flesh him out more, finalize some things, etc.

Do you as a writer have a 'type' or trope you're the most drawn to?: As is the case on my other blog I am heinously in love with sad, damaged men; especially those struggling with what makes them 'human' (or not human, in certain special cases) and how that shifts their perceptions about the outer world and their own internal world. All of the muses on this blog are walking a fine line of some sort---some realize they're on it, some don't---likewise some know that it will kill them to remain/keep walking but, for a variety of reasons, circumstances, etc, refuse to step off said line. I've always loved complex characters that are far, far, far removed from a mere black and white view and I get that in excess here for every character and I love that.

Out of your cast of characters, who's the best prepared for a crisis? The worst?: Sishel is best prepared for a crisis Not only was he trained for such things for one his perspective in a general sense is broad and as a result he's hard to truly surprise. He's not the only one well equipped to handle things, obviously, but he's one of the best.

The worst prepared? Kariom. Sometimes. His dependency upon those he trusts---Flynn, Bo, Milosh, etc---can potentially (if not drastically) hinder him in regards to figuring out, ultimately, what to do during a crisis if they're not actually there beside him. He has a tendency to go from point to point, one thing to the next, and so on, in a very narrow view until the wider issue becomes more manageable which can easily be both a good and bad quality. He won't give up when there's a problem in front of him---and that saves him often, his determination is one of his strongest assets, after all---but he might be slow to act initially or doubt himself if he's alone, stressed, undergoing a shuffling or suffering from do-de, etc.

Who has the best singing voice? Who could be really good at it with some practice?: Kariom is one of the characters with the best singing voices---a talent only further helped by the fact that his head is nigh constantly filled with the various songs and voices of the stars to the point where (provided he's not being hurt by those same voices, that balance is one of his walked upon lines) he'll even try to sing and/or hum them aloud himself, not only as a way to remember them/potentially write them out later, but to share them with others.

In regards to a muse being good at singing with practice Flynn doesn't need it, per se, but you will practically have to pull teeth to get him to sing for you in the first place. If he does it without much fuss/coaxing/begging it's generally for a special occasion like Tigla-Dera or a Rite within the clan that might call for it. Sometimes he sings while he works---usually he just hums while working the field but sometimes he'll sing to the plants and crops---but that's usually only when he knows he's alone. He used to sing to the kiddo when he was little, he even taught him a few songs that he could, at the very least, hum along to if the words were hard to remember.

Who has the weirdest hobby, like does someone grow flowers to make their own paints and dyes?: The Traveler's collection thanks to her 'job' somewhat falls under this; considering she's close to an masterless melalo and yet her explorations, documentations, experiments, and crafting go far beyond mere spiritualism or mysticism and as a result ends up being incredibly physical/tangible in nature. Melalo are hands on too, obviously, but there's a quality of alchemy to the Traveler's work that marks a clear division between the practices.

She's very, very, very hands on with her work; be it for herself or for someone else that she's trying to aid in some way, and that has led her to witness some very astonishing and nightmarish things (to say nothing of how she ultimately interacted with said things) and as a result her 'collection' can be seen as 'strange' by someone viewing it from the outside. Flynn, Junyver and Mares would certainly appreciate it. The distance between benign and pleasing to stark and deadly is incredibly thin with her. And she doesn't know when to stop.

How would (blorbo of your choice, my pick is Kariom) react to 'You're just like your mother and/or father'?: For a multitude of reasons I can't answer this in regards to Kariom (yet) but if you were to say this to Roui---specifically in regards to his father, Churi---he would not take it well in the slightest. Roui would be deeply hurt for the most part; especially when you take into the account the work he puts forth in order to avoid the pitfalls that plagues his entire family line (with incredibly mixed success mind you; not to mention some of the toxicity he doesn't seem to realize that he's already internalized), and saying something like that without keeping his efforts of growth in mind can and will set him off. Roui is working hard to better himself as a person first and foremost and his primary associations of his father are steeped in feelings of pain, abandonment, etc, and are, understandably, hard for him to see past much less reconcile. Yet. It doesn't help that he practically refuses to talk about it in an honest or open way because he's afraid of being judged and misunderstood by others.

He would respond more positively to being compared to his mother (although she too has some rather stark issues that Roui was (and still is) negatively impacted by) especially she's actually present in his life and that gives them the opportunity to repair their frayed relationship and move forward in a healthier and closer way.))

First impression: ASS you remember, I started to comprehend Bloodborne before even getting a PS4! Through wikias, fanart, etc. So my first exposure to Brador was someone's doodle of his face amongst some other nice portraits, which led to me only reading his dialogue without any context or even voice. Thanks to that fanart and lack of context, my brain painted me that uh… I don't know, very elegant, very handsome, serious and mysterious man? Further learning that he sits in the trash and wears a hyde of the beast he killed was a surprise, but it didn't move the good (?) impression, only elaborated it!

Impression now: He indeed fell from grace in my eyes since then xD No, he IS an interesting and intriguing character! But by now I see him as suuuuuch a hopeless fuckin SIMP for Laurence. SIMP. Fucking S I M P. And also so comically depressed and blackpilled that it warrants memes and light mockery x)

Favorite moment: When we find him in his imprisonment, of course! He is being so smug, trying to turn our (presumed) righteous anger against us! But mostly, I just liked the sight of him just… sitting there, staring in the same spot with lifeless eyes and ringing that bell monotonously… You don't even know whether in this very moment he is invading someone else or he is just completely lost.

Idea for a story: Brador starting to turn on other, younger/newer Healing Church members, in his older age and paranoia, fearing that they'll either be willing to dismantle the whole thing or be too incompetent to let others do that. And he of course would have to fight Henriett at some point, that likewise was snooPING AS usual!

Unpopular opinion: The "homophobic homosexual" joke SUCKS, and western fandom should be ashamed of letting it overstay its welcome!! Favorite headcanon: Brador used to wear the cool cut content Clocktower Hunter badge, and so were doing some other hunters associated with the Clocktower - primarily responsible of getting rid of runaway patients or the doctors that recovered their morals and couldn't take it anymore; so no one will share too much information with the commoners. The assassins, of course, never had a concrete uniform, since they were not supposed to be identified by anyone except each other.. But Brador also used to have a cool cape in the times before Laurence turned.

oof. they've both done this, albeit at very different points of knowing each other. two illustrations off the top of my head: when they first meet—cannot overemphasize, this is like, a year after dying; very much firmly in his "annoying uninvited roommate" phase—skrael is still dealing with *gestures* all of that. luckily, he doesn't sleep often. (bellroc thinks he does. they're wrong. they can be forgiven, they're also extremely depressed at this point.) the first time they see one of these dreams, they don't know what to do. it's the dead of night, deathly quiet, just the two of them around; but the air around him is freezing. frost starts collecting on surfaces, ice flints forming his hands. bellroc knows, immediately, what it must be. they recognize it. so—even though they're still both in the rough, uneasy allies at best, definitely not even friends stage at this point—they steel themself and wake him up, reaching out to shake his shoulder, just lightly. he absolutely nearly shanks them. but at the last moment, he recognizes them; they're so still, so deliberately, absolutely controlled, he realizes—that's not a face from the dream. (he's never seen a person like them. he knows it, even then.) of course they still have a long way to go from this, but this is one of the first real thaws, in those early days. and it's easier to not get shanked once you get a bit better at magic. not to mention: gotten to know him better, too. skrael likewise tends to go the "contact" route, but—by the time i'm imagining this, all i can think of is: waking up in a panic after killahead to steady, solid cold. which feels so different than—no, wait, i'm back—ah. by then they've known each other so carefully, so long; the dreams still come, but he knows much better how to meet that panic. how to catch it—not fight it—but minimize it, keep it managed.

...occasionally. i think they have fairly opposing tastes in clothing ("gender: no, presentation: yes; gender: yes, presentation: no") and they are, after all, rather different shapes. 😂 but yes, i've thought a normal amount about this. bellroc has absolutely worn skrael's cloak (or at least: the cloak he normally wore at the time; before he gets his cloak, the black one), they've absolutely lent theirs to him at times. they must have shared clothes at some time, especially for the majority of human history when textiles were so precious. there's also just something innately curious about "seeing significant other outside their usual getup," which i feel like they'd both get a kick out of. ...anon nO, i want to draw this, now!!

both of them definitely do this, for various reasons. (pride. denial. wanting to keep the other from hurt.) by now they can both absolutely tell, but i like to think in the early days skrael got very irritated by how bellroc could always see through him. they have a temper, they're impetuous—they're certainly not great at concealing what they feel!—but they're not stupid. they spend their entire mortal life (and a good while afterwards) feeling everything they know about how to show or control emotions is a thing they had to learn, on purpose. not his fault he didn't get such an obvious head start.
