2020 Half-year fic rec for Steve Rogers’ birthday!

I made a poll on Twitter to know if people would be interested in me doing a half-year “best of” fic rec like I did last year , and the response was overwhelmingly positive, so here it is! 😊 These are my favorite fics of the year so far! (in no particular order)

This is another one I’m sad hasn’t updated in a while! This honestly stole my heart to a point that in the time I found it in mid April 2019 and June of 2019 I have re-visited the fic 105 times, rereading it at least half as many as that. I’m really hoping the author comes back to the fic, because it was keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Together, they start a revolution.

This one is another absolute classic in the Faberry fandom, and is another fic that has stuck with me throughout the years! It has a fantastic softer take on Quinn that I truly appreciated because everyone back in the early years of the fandom would make her so angry and bitter and she’s just so soft in some interpretations

Rachel Berry is a successful Broadway star with a new roommate, the very odd, naive Quinn Fabray. It starts with a note on the fridge and a childishly scrawled doodle of an elephant. Everybody has a little crazy in them.

4. Still off the Key of Reason by iamapanda

Chapters: 37/37 [185k]

The sequel to Just off the Key of Reason! Still as soft and as crazy! I can’t mention one without having the other in the list as well! I can’t explain how it feels to look at the ff.net pages after so long, my heart is transported back to 2011 and I’m sitting on my bed after I’m supposed to be in bed. I miss the days where I could just spend time reading these fics and not having adult responsibilities.

Quinn is thundering her way through vet school. Rachel is enlightening the west coast with her talent. The story continues with a wedding, dogs in tuxedos, and Pooh Bear vows. Crazy never fades.

3. A Million Miles of Fun by Jade8Devlin

Chapters: 12/12 [103k]

This one is a little different from the last ones! It isn’t my favorite because of its literary genius, but because of how fun and out there it is! It’s concept is fresh and dark and something I honestly didn’t expect to see but it quickly grew to be a favorite for me!

warning for violence, abuse, mentions of murder! the whole story revolves around The Unholy Trinity + Rachel murdering Quinn’s family so please take that into consideration!

And in Lima, Ohio, a man and woman were killed earlier today during what is believed to be a home invasion. We’re starting off strong with a Marvel crossover fanfic wow. Who knew that crossovers could be done tastefully as 2013 Wattpad kind of ruined it for us. However, this fic changed my mind! This fic is funny as fuck and is just a goodass time. I love a good multi-chapter fic (as you’ll soon see) and this one is a showstopper.

With all of the Black Lives Matter protests happening right now, I think that this fic is super relevant. Draco has moved to New York City and is working as a receptionist at a tattoo shop and a mentor for inner city kids, but he accidentally gets forced to work out his differences with Harry, who at this point hates his guts. This fic is pretty serious, tackling themes of mental health, suicide, and police brutality. Every OC in this story is completely lovable and I cried my eyes out many times. When people ask me for a fic reccomendation this is the one I give people. Dare I say that this is my all-time favorite fic.

ALRIGHT MY PORN LOVERS THIS ONE IS FOR YOU! Don’t lie I know you’re horny. Somehow this fic is so fucking gorgeous and sweet yet so sinfully hot. It’s literally two boys who have never felt like their emotional needs have been satisfied learning to help and love each other like how much more wholesome does it get. I mean it’s all fine and wholesome until you get to the kinky sex which is WONDERFULLY WRITTEN MIGHT I ADD! I always say that if porn can make you feel something other than just horny, you’ve found a winner, and this story does just that.

Definitely check all the tags and I mean all the tags before you read this, but this is definitely one of my favorite porn with plot stories.

Might I just say that classics are considered classics for a reason. This is one of those stories that has the vibe of high school summer after senior year where all you do is try to escape reality and figure out your place in the world. While the plot is wonderful and the characters are great, I think what shines the brightest from this story is the writing style. It’s so enchanting and poetic with the best one-liners that make your heart hurt. On my AO3 bookmark i captioned it, “This just ripped my soul in half and restitched it together again,” and I still stand by that.

James and Lily Potter had a secret, one which led to Thanatos saving young Harry from a dreary life with the Dursleys and changed the face of the Second British Wizarding War before it ever began.

This story feels much more like a 12 season television show than a two hour movie if you know what I mean. The plot is pretty slow going but the character development and interation makes it worth it. The story blends the lore and events of the HP and PJO to make a completely new story without making it feel like a goddamn recap. The reader follows Harry from when he’s young all the way into adulthood and it’s a fun time to watch him grow as a character and bond with his parental figures. Also some of the spinoffs are really wild and I never would have thought of the pairings but they just work somehow?? My personal favorite spinoff is the Pirates of Caribbean/Calypso and Leo arc like HELLO?! hot pirates. The total word count of the two series is 465k so beware it takes a hot second to chug through this one.

This Worship of an Extinct Fire by Lomonaaeren

Unspeakable Draco Malfoy has planned for nearly six months how to take down Thomas Linwood, a man who has discovered the secret of converting wizard bodies to pure magic. He was prepared for anything--except the discovery of the missing Harry Potter in Linwood's compound.

This one, I don’t know how it’s not considered a classic. I’ve seen it floating around on drarry tumblr and wow is it good. I especially like the detailed magic system and mechanics that Draco is investigating. How the author managed to have so much detailed and gracefully planned out backstory in 30k words is beyond me. Also gentle Dracoo Malfoy is my favorite Draco Malfoy :) absolute angel mode.

Little Compton Street (One Rainy Night in Soho) by LLAP15 and Writcraft

Oneshot, 66k Words, Draco/Harry, Past Sirius/James, E Rating

TW: Implied/Referenced Homophobia, Light D/s Dynamics, References to Cancer, References to HIV/AIDS

Draco is lonely, Harry hates the press and it won’t stop raining in London. Harry discovers a magical street that’s close to disappearing forever and Draco realises he’s one rainy night in Soho away from finding everything he’s been searching for.

This fic is, in every sense, a masterpiece. Especially for pride month, the story surrounding LGBTQIA+ activism, the AIDS Epidemic of the 80s, and the gentrification of historically queer communities is one that should be read by everyone. Every single place, OC, and historic event has real world ties and is historically accurate, making this fic even more enchanting. Everything about this fic is graceful and slow burning I can’t help but fall in love with it. I’ve only seen this fic once on HP tumblr, but I feel like it should be considered a classic as it is truly a moving piece. This fic is one of the biggest reasons why I became so enthralled with LGBT history and am writing a fic that takes place in a wizarding version of the AIDS epidemic.

Sensitive Touch by Raserwolf

When Draco Malfoy encounters a struggling and frustrated Harry desperately trying to tie his shoes after a meltdown in the Great Hall, his curiosity regarding the incident leads him to seek the help of the two people closest to Harry: Ron and Hermione.

After even they are shocked to hear the extent of Harry's issues, though Hermione had her suspicions, he discovers more about the man than he ever thought he knew before.

As a Neurotypical, I found this fic to be absolutely wonderful. I don’t know much about the typical traits of those who are one the autism spectrum and how they affect their everyday lives, but from what I was reading in the comments from those who are on the spectrum or who have family who are, this fic was pretty accurate and realistic. Harry, who lives with aspergers, goes without a known diagnosis until 8th year and it’s just heightened by his PTSD and anxiety and ugh I just want to hug the boy. The story follows Harry and Draco and the rest of the 8th year gang through the year and has multiple arcs in which the wizarding world are just dumbass bitches who can’t fucking seem to accept people for who they are. Not only is Harry on the spectrum but he’s also Desi with a purpose and not just mentioned and forgotten which is wonderful. The boys go through a lot of trauma in the story but there’s also a lot of teeth-rotting fluff that I live for. This is one of the fics that I have read and reread because I love it so much.

This definitely is not my full list I have a ton more stories in my bookmarks if you are curious. I’ll probably post a part two to this just cause I have so much and read so often. These, however, are definitely the biggest highlights.

Which is not actually 76k, since I am getting some financial aid. I was saying that $76,000 is the base tuition (well, with housing and stuff). Which yeah, is a lot, especially when compared to community college. And it’s the reason I’m thinking about transferring out after a year or two to a UC school since I’m from California and the tuition would be a lot cheaper thanks to in-state tuition and Cal Grants and all that stuff. I don’t think I’ll end up doing it in the end, or at least hope I won’t have to, but we’ll see.

I wouldn’t go to a community college though. Community colleges can be pretty good, and I have a cousin who went to one for two years before transferring to a UC for his bachelors or whatever, but I don’t want to go to one myself. Going to a 4-year university has been my dream since childhood. I’ve spent the past few years being told by people that that’s the end goal. With some specific people telling me that if I don’t go to a university after all I’ve done, it will be a waste. And one particular teacher telling me I’ll fail at life if I don’t go to a 4-year university and while I know it’s not true the combination of all that pressure has stuck with me in a way I can’t get out of my head. And to a large extent, I agree. I didn’t do all the things I’ve done and pushed myself beyond what I really felt like doing so I could go to a community college which would have accepted me even if I hadn’t done those things, as long as my grades were good enough (is there even a grade requirement? I have no idea actually. I’ve never checked. I think so? But I really don’t know). So much of my life over these past few years has been dominated by me doing things so I could build a resume that would get me accepted into a university. Basketball, track, science fair, IB, etc. Whatever made me look the most impressive. Whatever could show a University, “Hey! I can multitask! I can excel! I can do well! I would be a great addition to your school, accept me!”

Sure, some of these things I did because I liked them. To an extent. I can tell you that my last 2 and a half years of basketball were done because I thought “what will universities think if they see I made Varsity but then abandoned the team? It will look so much better if they see I can stick with something.” Definitely year 3 in particular was for college. That year was beyond hellish. Science Fair took so much effort, and created many stressful days all with the goal of “improving my college application.” The specific diploma program I’m doing in school was 50% motivated by “colleges look to see you took the hardest courses available at your school” and “I need to look the best”. Long story short, I’ve worked too hard with the specific goal of “getting into a four year university” to just… not do that.

The biggest thing though, or maybe it’s tied with the last thing, is that going to Duke has been a dream for as long as I can remember. Even in elementary school I wanted to go. In about 3rd grade I realized, hey if I get good at basketball then that will impress them! And then proceeded to play basketball nonstop until my junior year of high school when my coach ruined the sport for me so much I took a two month break. Which I came back from to play for him again because I needed that “Varsity basketball senior year captain” thing on my resume. To get into college. My dad went to Duke, and I’ve been wearing Duke stuff since I was born. I’ve always felt like going there would give me a sort of connection to him. Like it would impress him. He passed away when I was 5, so going there is all the more important. Kind of like I can show him, “You know what dad? I did my best. I tried so hard, and maybe I’m not perfect, but look where I’m going! I did it! I’m here! I made it! Just like you did! Are you proud of me?” I don’t remember him much, but his Duke friends were his friends that stayed with him for life, and his Duke stories were the ones that were told. It was a special place to him, and because of that it’s a special place to me.

I’ve visited the campus, and it’s beautiful. It has one of the best environmental science programs out there, which is what I’m interested in, as well as a marine lab that I’m hoping to have a class with. The campus is beautiful, and the people I met seem pretty cool. and it’s just… Evidence. Evidence of how hard I worked. All those nights of staying up until 2AM, trying to finish an essay or a project or a study guide or whatever payed off. They got me to my dream school. To one of the top universities in the country. Sure it’s not an ivy league, but it’s good. It has the programs I want to enroll in. It’ll look good on a job application. It’s located pretty close to the EPA headquarters, as well as a bunch of other prestigious places (the research triangle area).

I wasn’t looking for the most expensive place possible. I can tell you I sobbed when I saw the price and thought “oh god I can’t go here. It’s too expensive.” I don’t like the price. It’s ridiculous. But my mom has told me for years that the price shouldn’t be the reason I don’t go to my dream school, as have several other people. Hell, my classmates have been talking about it for years. Whenever I talk about something that seems below impressive, I get looked at. Like, “what the hell are you talking about.” “What the hell do you mean you don’t know if you’ll get in? You’re like one of the top 5 smartest people here” Or “oh come on don’t worry about it you’re super smart” or “no way you’re going to go somewhere like that. you’re too good for that.” And I sure as hell don’t have a great self image or self confidence. Being able to go somewhere like Duke gives me such a sense of accomplishment. I did something. I really did something. I worked so so hard. And I’m getting something out of it. I didn’t fail. After spending so much time feeling like a failure, i did something. And I don’t want to give it up. I really, really don’t want to give it up.

Plus there’s what I said before. I feel like if I do go to community college… i’ll have failed. Community college is a great option for people. I’m glad it exists. It’s especially great for people facing tough financial situations. Several of my friends are going to community colleges either because they couldn’t afford a university education, or because they just wanted to. And I’m not looking down on it. But for so long I’ve been told that that’s not the top - that university is. And like I said, I can’t get that out of my mind. If I go to community college I know I’ll always have a voice nagging in the back of my head that I could have done better. I still feel guilty for small things I did years ago. I hate myself for doing choir, for example. Right now, my class has 1 valedictorian and 2 salutatorians (due to a tie). So the top 3 people in the class. I’m class rank 4. Had I not taken choir, I would be either 1 or 2 right now. But I took choir. I wanted to sing and I allowed myself that and it hurt my GPA. I tell myself, well I had some fun. But will I regret it for a while? Yes. Have I regretted it since I finished? Yes. Because “I could have done better.” I took choir before that and that should have been good enough, right? I would have been fine taking a different class. If I had taken that 7th class when i had the option, taken that weighted class instead of the non-weighted choir, then I wouldn’t be number 4. It’s silly to be so upset over. But that’s the sort of way my mind works and the sort of thing that sticks with me. There was nothing wrong with taking choir. It wasn’t a terrible experience. Just like there’s nothing wrong with going to community college. But I would have that nagging voice telling me that I failed. That I could have done better. I don’t want to feel guilty for however many years that would stick with me.

And then last thing… I’m already enrolled in Duke. It’s a little late for going to a community college. So thanks for the suggestion, but no thanks. I’ve spent a while thinking about where I would go. I thought about community college for a while, to save money. But I’m getting financial aid so college isn’t completely impossible money wise. I have a savings account that will help me pay. I don’t want to go into debt. If I have to transfer somewhere cheaper to avoid that, then so be it. I just don’t want people to see me as a failure, and I don’t want to see myself as a failure. If I don’t go to a university (specifically Duke) at this point, I know that that is what’s going to happen. I get judged enough when I’m not at the top already. And as much as I know my life shouldn’t revolve around other people’s thoughts about me, I get freaked out thinking about being a failure, and thinking about what others think of me. It doesn’t always change my actions, but it does make me insanely guilty which I don’t want to be.

Okay for the real last thing I will say this. Thank you for making a suggestion to help me. Debt is not a fun thing, and I don’t want to be in debt. However, even putting aside all my fears of not going to a university… I want to go to Duke. It’s been my dream forever, and it has everything that I want now. So that’s where I’m going. And next time, please just… phrase things a little nicer. That’s the sort of stuff/tone I get hit with both by people trying to crush my dreams (in this sense and others), and by people telling me I need to do something like going to a university or I won’t accomplish anything meaningful with my life.

Sorry for going off or whatever. This is much longer than I thought it would be, and super unorganized. It’s stream of consciousness or thought or whatever the phrase is (I think the first but i’m tired and don’t feel like putting in more effort). But it’s honest. So that’s that.

Monster

Status:

Not yet started to write/paint. It will one day be a graphic novel. I hope. A 3D short film exists which is when I first developed the idea. Mind you, that’s my 2nd semester short film, it’s not perfect and I had no idea what I was doing. But given all that I’m still really proud.

I have about two thousand ideas for four-panel comic strips and short comics and short stories and a whole novel and a graphic novel. One day I’ll make them all!

Synopsis/Description:

Sierra is nine years old and she has befriended the monster under her bed. At first she was kind of scared until she realized that the monster was probably as scared of her as she was of it. Now they’re both very comfortable with each other and the monster usually wakes her up during the night because it wants cookies. Suffice to say Sierra is not amused. They do kind of love each other, though, even if it’s more in a sibling sort of way.

Dreams and Shadows

AKA my current WIP fantasy novel

Status:

First Draft done. Second and third drafts abandoned half-way through because they were stupid. Currently on the fourth draft, the one that might actually be worthwhile!

Wrote the first draft during NaNoWriMo 2014 which was back then 93,734 words. At first it was called Dreamweaver, then Dreamweaver and Shadowdancer, and then I shortened that because it sounded stupid. Now the total wordcount that I’ve invested in this stupid book is in the 500K words area, and the current approved words are roughly 75K. It’s probably going to be two books if it continues getting longer without my permission. Also, it’s a fantasy novel set in a world that’s more or less steampunk-y (because who doesn’t love steampunk) :D

Synopsis:

How does one break someone? There are different ways for different people. Take Ben, for example. He has many friends, many loved ones. To break him one needs to isolate him from everyone else. Pull him away. It won't work by just taking someone he loves -- he loves too many, it wouldn't be complete. He has lived most of his life with a chipped heart anyways -- another crack would hurt, but in the end it wouldn't make much of a difference. But then there's also Ava, his little sister. By isolating him one isolates her as well, because her whole world revolves around him. Sure, she's got friends, a mother, a father. But there's only one person she can't live without, so by taking him away you break her, too. It’s an art to break someone, an art that only few have mastered.

When Ben wakes up the world and his place within it have changed. There was an accident he can't remember, and now he's in a strange parallel world where nobody can see him, changed in ways that go so much deeper than he could ever imagine. He's alone now, invisible in the crowd, isolated from everyone he loves. And with his loss Ava's world burns down within a single night, leaving behind nothing but ashes and broken bones.

Ben must find a way to Return before those he left behind finally give up on him. Ava needs to learn that isolating herself only rarely helps and that accepting help from others might be difficult but necessary – and that she might be the only one who can help her estranged parents reconnect and rebuild their relationship.

Also, there might be a way to help Ben, even if Ava is only half certain that he’s still there at all.

The good thing is that they’ve got a guardian on their side, the family cat Amber, who can see both and knows much more than she lets on.

Icicle Soul

Status:

Currently on hold. Started the first draft during Camp NaNo a few years ago, plotted the whole thing, and then wrote something else. This is the project that I’m most hyped for! I just never feel as if I’m good enough to write it yet. It’s also the one I’m going to write when I’m done with Dreams and Shadows! AKA the thing that’s keeping me focused and writing because once I’m done I can get back to this one! :D It’s also the story that is simplest to pitch and probably sounds the most boring but actually it’s really complex and I love it so much (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧

Synopsis:

Four different people have to face the Lord of Winter because otherwise Spring won’t return to the worlds.

Morning Star

Status:

Currently on hold, started with the first draft which is not yet finished. Completely plotted out, characters are fully developed, many great plot twists, magic system and worldbuilding are there... just have to write it. AAAAHHH.

Synopsis:

The Ekhir Empire has survived for over 60 years but now that the First Emperor has died the throne passes on to his only surviving son, a monster by all accounts, throwing millions of lives into the bloodiest conflict to date as the various rebellions form into one to fight back together against a common enemy.

The Guardians created and appointed by God have split into two factions whose conflict has grown into a full-blown civil war, fought by beings who command incredible powers. A small group of people has decided to search for the body of God and to re-awaken her from a coma that, according to legend, started millions of years ago, in hopes of getting help during the fights. What only one of them knows are two important facts: One of the travellers is Lucifer Reborn; and in addition, if they actually manage to find and re-awaken God, she will die. The storyline follows twelve different POV-characters as they try to survive the conflicts that threaten not only their lives but also their families, friends, everyone they ever loved and everything they ever knew.

Since this no longer takes place on earth I’ll change Lucifer’s name when I get back to it^^

Burning Skies

Status:

Currently on hold. Another half-written NaNo project. The origin story of my fictional universe (the one where all the other stories except maybe Sierra’s take place.) I’ll definitely write it one day.

All the NaNo chapters that I’ve written for this are on my sideblog @lirhin which was my writing blog back then, here. First draft though, so probably kinda wonky.

Still love the concept, and all the plot twists. And the magic systems! I’ll start from scratch when I write it again, though.

Synopsis:

It’s been three hundred years since The Fall. Society has slowly started to revive, pick itself up again, rebuild what was destroyed and retrieve what was lost. Only, the questions remain: What was The Fall, why did it happen, how can we make sure that it doesn’t happen again? Everyone who knew the answers to those questions died back then. A lot of knowledge has been lost during those last days of chaos – including the knowledge of magic. Something of legends, people say, stories told children at night, to try and keep them from acting stupidly. The only problem is — magic has never been lost, just pushed away. Now the power thickens and it’s returning, fast, and the costs are very high. Too bad that the world is trying to force every single mention of it away, and too bad that it’s becoming more and more important in the grand scale of things…

Rin has been abandoned by everyone she’s ever loved, left behind and betrayed. And she knows that she will one day destroy the world. At least that’s what everyone who’s trying to kill her tells her (and she’s dealt with a lot of those people). They have never told her how she will do that but apparently many of them think that she will, somehow – and why shouldn’t she believe them, after all of their attempts? If they think so, so be it — and if the world doesn’t care about you, why should you care about the world?

Cass, on the other hand, has had a similar life in the one sense that she’s completely, utterly alone and lost. Working as a slave for a man who owns a dozen children like her isn’t easy, especially if he choses to train each of them according to their newly-given talents. When the chance finally arrives, the chance to escape and achieve freedom once and for all, Cass doesn’t know what to do. Run and hide or stay and plot revenge?

Firewings (Feuervogel)

Status:

Currently on hold, also going to be at least a trilogy, I guess. This is my first “proper” story, the first time I participated in NaNoWriMo, and I really owe everything to that program. First I wrote it in German, then I re-wrote it in German, then I started re-writing it in English, and now I’ve got at least 600K worth of words. I still love the worldbuilding, magic systems and characters. I might have to think about the plot when I re-write it. Still love it though. Also, it has a lot of characters even if it only started with one (Ilien... always Ilien).

I named my side blog @lirhin after one of my main protags from this project, and my username on NaNoWriMo is also Lirhin... guess why (✿◠‿◠)

Synopsis:

Erlanthar — a world where demon-like creatures, the Skadar (meaning Cursed), come out at nightfall to kill and torture all life they can find, human or otherwise. Everything that protects the human population at night are runes and prayers — prayers that they and their families might be spared tonight, that the runes won't fail, that everything will go on. Several different plotlines follow a series of characters: Ilien has lived alone for a very long time solely for the purpose of revenge, hunting down demons in his spare time, until one night he saves a litlte girl from being kidnapped. Her parents were murdered during the kidnapping, so he sort of adopts her, calling her Lirhin since she’s stopped talking. Now the kidnappers want her back. Jeanna is still a child when her mother and older sister are killed (amongst others) in a demon raid because there was a flaw in the rune system of the whole village. While Jeanna is determined to learn how to protect herself the whole village starts to collaborate to survive the night. Everything changes when she discovers something unbelievable about herself and her older brother. Razouk is brought up knowing that he is not good enough, that he will always be second choice after his sister. He decides that he must prove himself, which is quite difficult when you don't even know the real identity of the man you want to prove your worth to. Then there are also Meena and Arrick, crown prince and princess, watch as their kingdom falls apart since their father is not capable of ruling anymore and their mother is the only person holding everything together. They must find a way to survive and do the best they can for their people. Finally, Rheon is fed up with the way the kingdom is ruled, being the ruler of a major city himself and fearing for his people who are starving to death. He decides that he must do something about that and that the best way is to start a rebellion.

Sky Citadel

Status:

Currently on hold. A former Camp NaNo project. I love it and I’ll come back to it. Probably not top priority though.

Synopsis:

What was once forgotten must be relearned.

What was once lost must be reforged. How can we stand against an enemy when we cannot stop fighting ourselves, each other, our only allies? When we have forgotten the truth about them and about ourselves, when we don't remember the threats of the Deeps? How can we survive if our biggest threat is rising again and we don't remember how to fight? The People of the Spired Sea have forgotten the past, have forgotten about their guardians, the Faye, and how they were saved. Now the old inhabitors of this world are returning but humanity's struggles are directed at each other, inside the community, and at the Marked who have started to rise again to protect humanity against the once-known threat. Jaivyn has lost everything he ever had, and yet gained so much. Ivy had everything and lost it all. And they are only two of the Marked, mankind's "Saviours", broken and conflicted, who are supposed to fight the Ancients and ensure that the Spired Sea has a future. How can anyone do something like that while they cannot even save themselves?

Note

Tony was in a bad relationship with someone and had to skip town to keep himself safe. Tony goes into hiding. He comes along a small town and a little diner/bar that is hiring. Using a false name he takes a job. The place is run by Bucky and co. (Steve, Natasha, etc.) Bucky starts to fall for the mysterious person that doesn't share much about his past. Tony thinks things are starting to look up, until his ex comes looking for him. Overprotective Bucky comes to the rescue.

[A/N:I swear to god, we were just going to write a longish-but-manageable15k for this prompt, and then… we wrote an entire 75k+ novel in less than a week, it ate our brains so hard. Anovel for which we have multiple sequels in the works, noless.

Safeand (the) Sound, Chapter One

Theentire world shuddered to a stop.

Tonylifted a hand to the side of his face and it was already tender, hotto the touch, the sound of the impact still echoing.

“Tony,”Ty said roughly, his eyes wide in shock. “You… You know I didn’tmean to do that, I never would have done that if I wasn’t sostressed out over this presentation, baby, you knowthat.”

Dadhad always had excuses, too. Ty waited for Tony to say something, butthere weren’t words.

“Comeon,” Ty cajoled, “it was just an accident, right? I’m notreally mad at you, okay?” He crossed the room and reached, thenpulled back when Tony flinched away. “Don’t be like that, I’llmake this up to you, all right? I’ll–” His phone started beepingurgently.

Tycursed and dragged it out of his pocket to glance at the screen andsilence the alarm. “I have to get back,” he said. “Thispresentation, it’s important.”It was important to Ty, anyway. His promotion – his future in thefirm – hinged on it.

Tonykept watching Ty, only half-listening, more aware of the way his facewas stinging as blood rushed into the damaged tissue on his cheekboneand the side of his eye.

Tyhad sworn. He had sworn,when he’d asked Tony to move in with him, that Tony’s days asHoward’s victim were done. That no one would ever hit Tony again.And Ty… Ty had a temper, but he took it out on things–dishes and knicknacks and books and Tony’s laptop, once – but he’dnever hurt Tony. Not until now.

“Iknow I’ve been working too much lately,” Ty said, “but it’sjust… it’s so important to me that I can be able to takecareofyou, Tony. I need to be able to make you happy.” He put on his mostwinsome smile and sad eyes. “You… know that, right?”

“Iknow,” Tony said, because arguing with Ty was pointless. Even thatbit of talking made his face hurt more. “You should go. You don’twant to be late.”

“Yeah,I just… You’re gonna be okay, right baby?” Ty scooped up hissuit jacket from where he’d dropped it when he’d come in to havelunch. “This is going to change our lives, Tony, you’ll see. I’llcome back right after, as soon as I’m done, and then I’ll make itup to you, okay? Anything you want, I promise.”

Tonynodded, and Ty flashed a brilliant grin. He swooped in and ignoredTony’s flinch to plant a gentle kiss on his uninjured cheek, andthen dashed out the door.

WhatI want,Tony thought, his thoughts running slow like syrup but crystal clear,isto never be hit again.

Itwas several long minutes before he could even move, and then it wasonly to slump down onto the edge of the bed, shivering and gaspingfor breath.

Hewasn’t sure how long he sat like that, waiting for his heart tostop fluttering in his chest like a frightened bird, fighting for airlike he was sucking it through a straw, his skin running alternatelyhot and cold.

God,he’d been so stupid.He’d thought Ty was the best thing that had ever happened to him,given him a foothold and the courage he’d needed to get out fromunder his father’s thumb. Why hadn’t he seen that he’d justbeen trading one bad situation for another? And now that Ty had hithim once – it would certainly happen again, if Tony forgave it, letit go. It would happenagain. And again. And again.

No.He couldn’t go through that again. He wouldn’t.Neveragain.He’d spent years coddling Ty’s jealousy, letting Ty pull himfurther and further from his few friends, letting Ty take more andmore control of his life.

Andnow, what could he do? The apartment was in Ty’s name. The car wasin Ty’s name. The bankaccountwasin Ty’s name. Tony had to leave, but all he had was the cash in hiswallet and whatever he could carry, and he hadn’t spoken to anyonewho wasn’t a friend of Ty’s in… two years? Three?

Fuck.

Tonyscrubbed his hands over his face, hissing as he scraped over theswelling bruise, and gave himself just five more minutes to give into the pain and the fear and the grief. Five minutes, and that wasall, because he had to be gone before Ty came back.

Fiveminutes passed, and Tony forced himself to stand up and go to thecloset. He considered the expensive travel luggage, but no – itwould be too hard to lug around, and too conspicuous. He dug past itand found his old backpack, from when he’d been a student. (Ty hadpromised that he could go back to school some day. But those had beenempty promises, hadn’t they?)

Hepushed that aside; he didn’t have time to list all of Ty’s wrongsagainst him. Tony had to pack. Underwear and t-shirts. One extra pairof jeans. Socks. A hoodie. A minimal tool kit: multitool, some coiledwire, duct tape. He didn’t want to keep any of the things Ty hadgiven him, and the things that might be worth pawning were engraved.Recognizable. He didn’t have time for it, anyway. He considered hisbooks, but books were heavy.

Tonyglanced at the clock. Fuck, he’d wasted too much time to the shock.He had maybe an hour left before Ty came back, and he needed to belong gone before then. He tossed his phone onto the bed – hisaccount was attached to Ty’s, of course – then fished his walletout of his pocket and rifled through it. The credit card followed thephone as being too easy to track. Driver’s licenses had RFID chipsin them now, too, didn’t they? His Metrocard was trackable, but itwould get him as far as Grand Central, at least. He wouldn’t needhis Kung Pao Takeout loyalty card, or half-a-dozen old receipts,or… Christ, there was a lot of junk in his wallet. Hurriedly, hedumped it all out and counted the cash; he had about fifty dollars.Shit.

Onelast time check – Shit, he’d have to runtocatch the next train – and he was out the door. He left it standingopen; if he was lucky, some opportunistic robber would come in andhelp themselves to Ty’s things and confuse the trail.

GrandCentral Station was a madhouse this close to rush hour. Tony clutchedhis backpack tightly and twisted through the crowds, making sure todrop his Metrocard. Someone would find it and use it, and if Ty hadit tracked, it would go… somewhere that Tony wasn’t.

Itwas about a mile from Grand Central to Penn Station. The clock tickedin Tony’s ears like a bomb counting down, and he jogged the wholeway.

Tonysquinted at the bus destination board. No big cities, that was tooobvious. No one-cow towns, either; there was no way to blend in. Whathe needed was a nice, middling-sized city, with a bus leaving in thenext fifteen minutes. And a ticket that, preferably, wouldn’t useup allhiscash.

VirginiaBeach stood out. Beaches were nice, Tony thought, though he couldn’tremember the last time he’d had anything like a vacation. Beacheswere full of tourists, where Tony’s accent wouldn’t beremarkable, where people lost their IDs and credit cards all the timeand so lots of places accepted cash that wouldn’t, otherwise. Theywere coming up on summer, so he might be able to find work doing oddjobs. And a transient population meant that it would be easier to notonly blend in with the crowds, but to move around.

Theticket was only $35. And the bus was a red-eye due to arrive arounddawn the next morning, which meant Tony had a place to sleep for thenight, even if it was a seat on a bus.

Right.Virginia Beach it was.

“Iam going to kill Bobbi,” Bucky said, shoving Clint’s shit into aduffle bag. This was the third time in two years that Bobbi Morse hadshown up, flirted a little with Clint, and suddenly Bucky was shortboth a renter and an employee. If Clint wasn’t such a loveableasshole, Bucky wouldn’t have given him his job back the first time.That, and no one else really wanted the damn job in the first place.Washing dishes by hand, sweeping the floor, and bussing tables wasnot exactly fun, and in the tourist town, it was hard work, too.

Therestaurant was failing, slowly but surely, Bucky knew that, so thewages he could offer weren’t great, either. The only good thingabout the job was that it came with meals and a discount on rent forthe little apartment over the garage that Bucky used to try to earn alittle extra on the side. Bucky had paid Clint under the table andtaken the rent out of it directly, which was a nice arrangement forthem both.

Atleast, it was nice right up until Bobbi had showed up flush with cash– she was a professional card cheat – and dragged Clint off foranother of their whirlwind adventures. The two of them would be gonefor months.And tourist season was just starting. If Bucky had to bus tables aswell as manage the restaurant and cook on Steve’s off-shifts, hewas going to die of sleep deprivation. “Killher,”he stressed. She couldn’t have waited until September to stealClint again?

“Youalways say that, and yet, you never do,” Nat said, pulling her hairback in a ponytail and grabbing the broom. “I’ll takebus-and-sweep today. Maybe Steve can do dishes in between cooking?”

“Idon’t do dishes,” Steve yelled from the back. That man had earslike an elephant, he could hear a whisper a mile away, especiallywhen it was about doing extra work. “I’ll bus, but I don’t likecooking when my fingers are all raisin-y.”

Natashabrandished the broom threateningly. “You know that sex you wantedto have, like ever again? Do the damn dishes, Steve.”

“CallSam,” Steve suggested. “I heard his transmission is going out. Hemight need the extra work for a few days?”

“Youcall Sam,” Bucky said. There weren’t customers yet; technicallythey opened at eleven on weekdays – brunch on Saturday and Sundaystarted at nine – but they usually didn’t start having sitdownsuntil half-past. “I’ll put a sign up and call down to the paper.”Who knew, maybe someone in this town had a teenager who needed somework. That wasn’t likely – there wasn’t any publictransportation that stopped close to the restaurant, and teens whohad cars also had access to better-paying jobs. But who knew? Someday, one day, Bucky’s luck would change. Maybe.

Buckywent to the supply closet and cussed for a while. Part of Clint’sjob was also keeping that room neat, but of course he didn’t do it.Mostly he did dishes and stole food and table scraps for his dog –oh, Christ, that was another thing to check. Had he left Lucky, orhad he and Bobbi remembered to take the dog with them? – and flirtedwith the customers. Clint wasn’t a bad guy, he was just…directionless.

Onthe other hand, Clint was on his way to Nevada with the love of hislife and he’d probably come back in four months with a lot ofamazing stories, which was more than Bucky had ever done. Docksidehad been his parents’ place – a beach restaurant that servedgreasy burgers, fries, crabcakes, and whatever catch of the day Buckycould buy off the boats before the bigger places crowded him out –and Bucky had never been more than two hundred miles from home in hiswhole life. So, maybe Clint had a better life philosophy than Buckydid. It was just inconvenient for the rest of them.

Finally,Bucky found the signs: HelpWantedandRoomfor Rent.He brushed them off; Clint had obviously been eating in the closet,since there were crumbs everywhere. Bucky made a mental note to getmore insecticide. The last thing he needed at the beginning oftourist season was an infestation of palmetto bugs. Palmetto bugswere enormous, flyingcousinsto roaches, fully an inch and a half long, and they freaked thetourists right out. Not that Bucky would blame them at all; he’dbeen known to shriek when one of them scuttered out from undersomething, too. And then there’d be problems with Maria Hill, thelocal Health Inspector.

Buckyhung the signs in the window, then took the broom from Nat. The porchshould be swept, too, even though that was a hopeless task. The beachsand always ended up everywhere. But it gave him a few minutes to beoutdoors, breathing in the brackish scent of the sea, combined with amild odor of seaweed and dead fish. It was home. He couldn’t giveup now.

Turnedout Sam had managed to win two hundred dollars on a scratcher, andwhile he was willing to help Bucky while the Dockside wasshorthanded, he didn’t need a second job. Bucky would send Nat outto the S-turn later in the afternoon. The local teens hung out therenear the little inlet, and they might know someone who needed thework.

The punishments for a human attacking a werewolf can be brutal, unless they have the protection of a wolf pack.How this translates to 'claim Grantaire as your mate to get him out of prison' is something Enjolras is still trying to get his head around, but he's never been one to give up on a cause even when it's sleeping on his sofa.)

They're a dull black that it takes him a moment to realize must be chalkboard paint, because near the tables there are words and doodles, and all over, even the erased sections are stained with faint colored marks like the walls have soulmarks.)

Former Marine’s Modelling Career Has Landed Her Marriage Proposals

Marines sacrifice a lot as they protect and serve our nation. In the United States, anyone over the age of 16 can join the military, and many brave people serve our country for a number of years before pursuing a career in another field.

One of these people is 29-year-old Shannon Ihrke, from Minnesota, pictured in the middle of the photograph below. Shannon joined the military when she was just 19 years old and spent four years on active duty before retiring from service. As a young woman, Shannon revealed that she had to work hard to prove that she was able to make the cut for the military, which puts its recruits through physically and mentally draining training. She subsequently landed a job as an administrative specialist. After leaving the military, Shannon decided to pursue a different career, and now she is making waves around the world as a model. Her time in the military left her with a jaw-dropping physique and she is featured below showing it off for a photoshoot.

As a result of her incredible looks and past, Shannon’s photographs have now gone viral online.

“I want to show girls that they can do and be whoever they want to be if they work at it hard enough,” she said. Having spent so long working in a very unglamourous environment, Shannon absolutely loves working as a model. In some of her most recent sizzling photographs, she can be seen modeling a very sensual lace lingerie ensemble.

“I love getting my hair and make-up done! What girl doesn’t want to be pampered once in a while? Doing shoots like these give me an opportunity to let another side of me come out,” she said. “Being able to explore that sexy side of me is fun to do once in a while, and I think every woman deserves to have an opportunity to get all done up and treated like a queen.”

“When the shoots are done by professionals and there’s a great team of creative energy, it allows you to comfortably enjoy bringing out that inner sultry side.”

Shannon said that her decision to join the military earlier in life was the best decision she ever made.

“I pushed my body harder than I could have ever imagined and I learned to remain calm and collected in the midst of chaos. I became part of something that was bigger than myself and I loved it,” she said. When asked why she decided to join the forces, she said, “Some Marines fight for our politicians, but most, do not. We fight for our families, our friends, and most of all – for our brothers and sisters to the left and right of us in uniform.”

“We join for the people that fought before us, the people that will fight after us, and even the ignorant people that don’t know how to be quiet when our National Anthem plays.” Shannon’s photographs have attracted so much attention online that she now boats an incredible 75K plus Instagram followers. What’s more is that she’s been offered money for “private photos” and even received a few marriage proposals.

Her policy, however, is to ignore these requests. But Shannon is not the only veteran who has proven that she has an enviable physique after service. Michael Stokes, a fine arts photographer in California, decided that he wanted to showcase the fact that wounded veterans can still be confident and sexy. “Some people will say to me ‘Oh, this is really helpful to their self-esteem,’ or, ‘You’re making them feel like men again,'” Stokes told MTV. “These guys have come to me very healed and ready to take the world on. I’m not giving them back their confidence. They already have it.” Stokes’ photographs became so popular that people wanted to see A LOT more of them. So they crowdfunded over half a million dollars to enable him to create a book. It was titled Always Loyal and featured male and female veterans. Thanks to the book’s success, Stokes was able to donate $20,000 to the Semper FI Fund, a charity that benefits wounded warriors.

“I had one vet who was very severely injured and he had to take some time to sit on them before publishing them. He said he just wasn’t used to seeing himself like that. But after two weeks, the vet gave [me] the OK – and was glad that he did,” Stokes revealed.

“He was shocked by the response – people telling him how sexy he was, how beautiful he was, that he’s a hero. He was genuinely shocked and surprised.”

Car Insurance - What kind of coverage is needed for an Occasional Driver...?

Okay, this is the deal, I have full coverage car insurance. This means that the insurance will cover me, if I have an accident that is my fault or if someone else hits me & it's not my fault. I also have insurance that covers me if someone breaks into my car & steals any kind of important items in my car. The Question... I sometimes let other people drive my car, to run errands for me (like driving my car home, cause I'm too sleepy to drive or I'm super busy & need an item from the store & I hand my keys to a licensed driver). I talked to my insurance company & was told they do not have coverage that will cover other drivers unless they are listed under my coverage. The problem - I don't want to list everybody in my family or all my friends. Isn't there insurance coverage that will cover anybody driving my vihecle as long as they are older than 25 & has a valid license? If so, what's the name of this type coverage - I nd to know the name b4 I call other companys. thanks""

An insurance agent sold this to my parents and I wish they put everything into layman's term. They bought this through a group called the Alliance for Affordable Services. They have a $5000 deductible but the policy reads like this: Hospital room/board has CoInsurance of 100% with Maximum up to $1000 per day. What is Coinsurance? I was planning to buy a car in UK. Initially I was planning to buy a high end car but a friend of mine suggested to get a small engine car to get cheap insurance.
