2021 - 2022 - 2023

Here's my art summary for 2022! In 2021 I had hoped that the inspo kick would last well into the new year, and... here we are. I produced WAY more this year than I initially thought and actually ran into the strange dilemma of having too much to choose from for this template :0

What a year for art.

I think because of the slow speed at which I produce-- and the relative stylistic consistency of what I do make-- I tend to fall into this trap of thinking I'm not actually going anywhere with my work, but looking back at my portfolio... this really isn't the case.

To put it bluntly, I see improvement from last year to now in the form of risks.

I hit a lot of milestones and firsts since January: I drew another comic, dabbled in several projects in grayscale, drew plenty of complicated backgrounds (or "whole pieces," I suppose), put together at least one .gif sequence, made mockups for merch, made real merch, zine entries... And even beyond 2D work, I wired up my first custom model kit, experimented with new materials, archived an entire TCG set, put together another cosplay, and (maybe most significantly) started writing fic again!!

I'm genuinely surprised by my output. While this year was creatively fruitful, it was maybe one of the worst on my health-- and by extension, my funds-- all around (an ER visit, COVID, some Mystery Issue with my feet... still a mystery to this day, actually) so I am pretty stunned that I managed to tap as far as I did into my creativity overall, especially when compared to 2021, a year I also thought went surprisingly well for art. Deadlines and community events and contests all pushed me into making more than I would on my own terms, so challenging myself a little definitely paid off... who would've thought? >___<

(while shoving my 2022 body of work under the bed) On the flip side, it turns out that throwing my dignity to the wind and shamelessly indulging pushes me to create, too! How many Evil Conans can one person depict in a single year??

...On a more personal level, aside from challenging myself with external motivators I think I was only able to produce as much as I did on account of simply learning to love what I make the way I make it. The vast majority of what I drew this year falls into what I've been referring to (to myself) as "drafts." But they're not drafts as most people would think of them - they're just not fully-polished works. March/November are good examples - contrast against June/August, which are definitely "polished."

It's probably not that big of a deal to other people how I refer to my work in my own company, but this year I seem to have realized that thinking of it in this way-- dismissing the time and effort spent on any one piece as merely "unfinished"-- is actually quite harmful. I have a habit of being harsh on myself and to call these works "drafts" undermines the amount of effort I put into them, and for what? Because they're not "clean" enough for (my own, self-imposed) impossible standards? That alone implies that there's only one way a work can be for it to be good enough, when the truth is that no-one would be none the wiser if I called them "finished" instead.

That's not really to say that I would stop trying to achieve this high-effort "finished" standard since I can get the same amount of mileage for lesser effort or whatever. I don't operate that way, there's a lot of pride and self-esteem tied to my art and I subscribe pretty unconditionally to delivering something that I'm proud of. I guess the key here is that "high" standards should not be "impossible" standards.

Starting from March (probably right around the time of the first DCMK FF Server Exchange), as year the progressed I slowly started warming up to this idea that I don't have to make something perfect to "get credit" for creating it. Perfectionism is an itch I'm still learning not to scratch every time it calls for my attention. And, relating to the exchange, there's something about a gift well-received that puts my guard down, and maybe it's because I'm always bracing for the worst (some imagined rejection of effort, perhaps) that I don't really expect people to so plainly like things I don't consider "good enough" for myself.

I guess what I'm saying is it's probably not an epiphany I would have just had for myself one day. I really don't think I would have realized the inherent hurt in my system if people didn't indirectly point it out to me time and time again, whether that gushing over artwork to my face or in tags or whatever, so... for that I am very grateful T___T

On that note, it has been a rough year for me so I want to express my deep appreciation for everyone who has supported me, whether you're just an art appreciator or an internet buddy, whether you came for ponies or animal mecha or ducks or detectives, whether you've donated at any point or bought something from the shop, commissioned me, etc ;___; I appreciate you all very much and truthfully I would not be creating so much if I didn't think I had an audience who could enjoy it with me. Thanks from the bottom of my heart <3

ayo look I haven't been up to date with tower of god since forever ago (maybe 3 or 4 years at this point) but your endorsi and rachel ship is literally so huge brain. genuinely endorsi had an awesome backstory about how cutthroat she was in order to become a princess but I feel like a lot of that is forgotten later on in the series in favor of her having a crush on baam that feels pretty shallow. since i've been rewatching dcmk recently i've had a few aus come to me and i know you haven't reblogged any ask games but i still wanted to pop them in your inbox and see what you think/what ideas you have on them if you'd humour me lol. anyway, today's idea is the follow up case from 'murderer, shinichi kudou' where they have to solve the case on the highway and shinichi is in danger of turning back in front of everyone. au where this is the conan reveal perhaps?

Yeeeeeeessssss excellent.

So Shinichi miscalculated, thought he would have just enough time, he announced the murderer and all of, and right as they leave and Ran goes to take his hand (I just skimmed the case,,) and all of that he. Shrink. And Ran is just like??? as she hold Shinichi's - Conan's ??? - hand.

I can't remember the exact serie of event but I guess it's after the police left, so we got Heiji thinking really hard on how he can salvage that ("CONAN WHAT A SURPRISE TO SEE YOU HERE. I WONDER WHERE SHINICHI JUST RAN AWAY." his actor skills are terrible), Kazuha trying to connect the dots, and Ran doing a 404 not found.

Kogoro literally turned around for 2 min and suddenly the small brat is here and the taller brat is gone??

Right at this moment Agasa and Haibara pull up and the silence gets more awkward. Agasa also tries to salvage the situation. He's worse than Heiji at it. Haibara decides she'd rather stay in the car than get involved.

Which lead to pandemonium, screaming, explanations and more screaming. At the end both Conan and Heiji are sitting in shame in the corner. Not quite dogeza but like, formal japanese sitting?? Haibara is torn between laughing and crying and very close to a mental breakdown.

favorite thing to draw

Oh!! Easy!! I like drawing people!! in fact I like drawing people so much that most of what I draw is people. I just also happen to be a perfectionist so... everything I draw that happens to have an elaborate background... know that I am gritting my teeth and cursing under my breath while I draw it <3

For more specific stuff... hmm... I don't like faces so much but I think drawing heads and shoulders can be fun! I also like to draw dynamic poses though I kind of lose interest when I have to flesh out the details LOL

how often do you draw

I try to draw every day, and I think I'm reasonably successful at this. Not drawing is like a sanity drain on me, I literally start going crazy going insane if I don't draw. I'm plagued by visions and they need to go somewhere!! The hard part is working continually on the same illustration/project. That... hm. Well, I do make progress.

If anyone's curious about works in progress, I'm usually pretty good at sending what I've done that day into my community discord! Right now it's a hot mess of BIRDMEN (unsurprising), DCMK (also unsurprising), original stuff (finally), and Celeste (<-???? the indie platformer Celeste??? it's more likely than you think) but things change all the time. I'd love to see some of you there~ <3

But yeah to answer the question. At least a couple of hours every day! Unless I'm writing instead— sometimes writing takes over my drawing time. If I'm REALLY into something I can spend basically the whole day drawing LMAO. when I'm taken by madness. when I've succumbed to my divine revelations. you know how it is ! !

a piece from this year that you’re really proud of

Ohhh I know exactly which piece I'm most proud of from this year but I'm not allowed to post it yet! I can upload all of it in July, it's a oneshot for a manga competition!

Now for something I CAN post... it's got to be one of these two, I think...

The top is a commission for my friend (commissions are open btw. if you even care. here's my carrd) and the bottom are... my blorbos from birdmen... how predictable...

But yeah the circular composition of the top one is CRAZY awesome and I think I did an excellent job with the watercolor style coloring!! The bottom one is just an insane feat of rendering for me honestly. I'm not proud of the road I took to get there, because there was an objectively faster and better way to do it, but I AM proud of the final product. Look at how the light falls on Sagisawa's hair... come ON... the light on Karasuma's chin...? that shit's insane...

I was just wondering if you wanted to talk about your DCMK journey; how you got into the series, what drew you in, least favourite/favourite arcs or characters, that sort of thing! oh man what drew me in and stuff let me tell you-

well it was very much my friend hehe they showed me some of the movies with kaito kid, and then it escalated into "ah alright we can watch the anime" with skipping most filler (but before that they were trying to get me to watch it for like two years lol) I absolutely adore most of early conan, the artstyle is so silly and neat and conan is a lil critter. Watching everyone getting used to this little menace butting into the crime scenes was also amazing. Episodes with Ran being suspicious of Conan were also amongst my favorites In later episodes/chapters I mostly look forward to main plot stuff, especially black org (please someone end this series its older than me lkdnvdrg), and the style and animation dont really catch my attention much, especially cases that arent main plot related. The side characters just dont feel as fun and interesting anymore.

my favorite parts of the whole series are probably like, clash of red and black, reunion with black organization, most kaito cases (especially early ones), when we first saw haibara, takagi and sato storyline, halloween case (on the boat), gin almost finding conan in a locker, and first chapter of manga specifically because how goofy gin and vodka look in some of the panels

my early fav characters were conan/shinichi, kaito, sato and takagi, kogoro and james black for like no reason idk hes just silly to me

around the middle it was more shuichi/subaru. I loved the whole timeline with him and him living next to agasa sdkjfdnrg. I do still like him quite a bit gin and vodka became my favorite characters after train case with haibara and stuff, i have no idea why it literally just clicked in my brain like "you are obsessed with them now have a good day" lol my least favorite characters are yamamura and momiji <3

also movies i like are 3, 5, 6 is fun too, 8, 13 (black org <3), 14, 20, and 23-25 are neat thats mostly it, sorry for the long ass ramble hehe ^^; its a lot of stuff for a series i refused to check out for two years dkfjvnd I would love to hear some of your favorites too next time you write if youd wanna talk about em :]
