i kind of want to stop batch posting, so here is straight up just what i drew tonight 💖

I happened to be reading over this again, and felt like reblogging it.

Because the first time I saw it, I pounced on one (tbh, probably accurate) criticism of me as a writer near the end, and went off on a long semi-related rant, which...

Well, it was a pretty good rant. I still agree with everything I said in it, and I'd already been meaning to write it all out at one point or another.

But it was also missing the forest for the trees, because this review is great. Definitely in the running for "most perceptive and on-point TAoHS reaction I've seen so far."

Also, for anyone who's curious, here's some tidbits about the writing process that partially confirm / partially disconfirm one of @thewadapan's speculations:

Like, if I had to guess at the genesis of this book, based on Nostalgebraist's comments, I feel like it's taking the starting point of "story about what if the AI doomers were right" -> "through the lens of Christmas" -> "[everything else in the story]". Of course there are tons of other influences in there, but those to me feel like the two ideas with the most explanatory power.

This is not that far from what actually happened – except that it happened in the opposite order.

The very first idea I had that is recognizable (in retrospect) as an idea for TAoHS the novel was "hmm, what if I wrote some kind of story involving secular Christmas lore, like Santa Claus and stuff."

That was back in December 2023. Esther and I were watching some Christmas movie about Santa, and I suddenly had this funny, whimsical line of thought. "This whole Santa mythos feels under-explored. It might be fun to do something with it... something dark and weird, that puts the inherent weirdness of Santa himself to new ends..."

And once I'd had this idea, it was just too funny to pass up. Especially once I'd hit on the obvious follow-up idea of releasing the book itself on Christmas. Like, imagine it: "the nostalgebraist Christmas special!" Hilarious!

(And, having just spend 7 years writing my previous novel, the idea of being on a pre-defined 1-year schedule for the next one sounded very appealing.)

Then, in early 2024 – mostly, in February through early April – I came up with a lot of ideas for this new "Christmas special" project.

A bunch of the basic elements of the book arrived during this interval: Herschel, Miriam, the Original Knowledge / Original Creation, the Emendation, the Raven scene, some sort of transcendental visitation by Santa on Dec 25 (I referred to this as "the Santa event" in my notes) which the story was building up to... Herschel's friend who's into cybernetics, Miriam's long-distance relationship with her media theorist boyfriend, the "temporally ambiguous but definitely in NYC" setting...

(Incidentally, although I can't say for sure, I think that some of these ideas ultimately trace back [unconsciously?] to Chris Adrian's novel The Children's Hospital. Which is weird, because I disliked that book! But it did have this one great and memorable monologue, which I posted as a #quote when I first read it. The main character's little brother is an eccentric and mentally troubled kid with his own personally concocted messianic religion; the context of the monologue is a flashback to when he was younger and [IIRC] the two siblings had a less strained relationship. In the flashback, the two are in their bedroom late at night on Christmas Eve. The brother can't sleep because he's afraid of Santa Claus, who he describes as a powerful and godlike being.

I think this quite likely resulted in me associating "weird, dark Christmas stuff" with an older sister and a younger brother, and their deteriorating relationship, and the younger brother's homegrown religious views – and if so, it thereby exerted massive butterfly-effect leverage over the whole of TAoHS. Weird!)

Anyway: in February through early April, I had all these ideas for the "Christmas special" book. A bunch of stuff I was reading around this time ended up "in there" in some form. Salinger's Glass family stories, for example. And The Drowning Girl, which I re-read in April, and which was a major influence on multiple aspects of TAoHS.

But like... something still felt wrong about all this stuff, at the time.

It felt like I just had a collection of neat ideas, stacked unceremoniously into a pile, and now just sitting there – inert, lifeless, lacking some animating spark that could breathe vigor and meaning into them.

And then, one day in the middle of April, I happened to be thinking about AI and "AI doomers." And I had the train of thought I've referred to in earlier posts about TAoHS, the one about "what if the AI doomers were right?"

Among other things, I asked myself: how would I want to have lived my life, in the time leading up to doomsday? If doomsday had arrived, and I was looking back on that life?

And the very first thing that came to me was: well, I would want to have written about this, in fiction. It would be a shame if I had to face doomsday thinking, aw man, I even missed my chance to write one of my little stories that was about this, while I still had time to!

And the natural next thought was: well, I guess I could work it into the "Christmas special," somehow?

After all, that's going to be my next book, so I'd definitely get the topic in on time if I did things that way.

And then, as I continued to think about "AI doom," in isolation and also in connection with the "Christmas special," it was just like...

Like a switch had flipped, suddenly, and all the lights had turned on at once. (Christmas lights, natch.)

Suddenly, the story was alight, alive, breathing, purposeful, coherent. It finally made sense! Adding this AI element made all my other ideas snap right into place, as though they'd been waiting the whole time for it to arrive. The cybernetics-friend character, the overlapping of post-WWII and present-day technologies and scientific ideas, the theme of structural resemblance versus embodiment... everything, all at once!

And then, that same afternoon and evening, I sat down and wrote a detailed outline, which (in retrospect) included most of the events that ended up in the final story, down to a lot of the small details and individual scenes.

It was all just... there, in my head, suddenly.

(There were a few ultimately important things that weren't in that initial outline at all, and only arrived later. I don't feel like specifying exactly which ones, though, I've probably said enough for now ;)

Yunho being the Mingi explainer is so fascinating to me; because it's clear that anyone who talks to Mingi for more than five minutes finds him utterly charming. His wide and varied social circle attests to his ability to make friends easily. Yet Yunho always makes it a point to inform people (or reassure them) that Mingi is nothing like the scary first impression he often gives via his on-stage drag performance of hyper-sexual masculinity.

I really wonder where this stems from; is it a protective (defensive?) gesture from a friend who watched as someone he cared about went on hiatus for anxiety-related mental health reasons? Is it Yunho trying to manage or direct our perception of Mingi because it benefits the group's image to have the existence of a Princess Minki who helps diffuse the more critical responses to Ateez's performance style? (This is similar to how the other members publicly manage the image of San: he's pouting kitty cat in the body of a manhwa protagonist). Is this part of their fanservice -- Yunho bragging about his exclusive access to Mingi's cutest self that not even ATINY can see?

There's plenty of room to speculate but I do find it interesting that this has been a recurring motif in their on-camera shipwork for years!

Same with Sunny, imo. I feel like Sunny, while she doesn't post as much on SNS or anything, is more of the type to like, send a random pic of her in a bikini that barely covers everything it ought to, to someone she's seeing, or like very coyly send a pic of her in some underwear she just bought asking you if you like it or something.

Tiffany is the American girlfriend of SNSD, OF COURSE she'd be down to send spicy content. However, I feel like she wouldn't be as spontaneous as Sunny might be - I feel like it would be more predictable, when the mood's right, when she can tell that you both are down to fuck that night and she's just sending you some preparatory-content almost, warming you up so that you can have the extra energy necessary to go until the sun rises the next morning.

Like, she'll take pictures of herself to please other people, but only to that extent - maybe you could convince her to send a pic of like, her in her favorite underwear, but that would be it.

I'm not sure if anyone has seen that Soshi TamTam episode, where Seohyun/Tiffany acted as Hyoyeon's manager, but they were doing so for a photoshoot Hyoyeon was doing for her album (I think?) and she was still pretty shy, even though she got some pics like this:

Hm ... I don't really know for Yoona, tbh. I feel like she might do a spurr-of-the-moment thing, sending a pic like this

except maybe the bra strap is lower and showing a little bit more, or maybe a pic like this

The meta with Seohyun recently is to say that she's secretly a freak, and while I also like that idea, I feel like it might not be as true as some people make it out to be? Seohyun would be #3 in terms of conservative-ness - she still seems to be living a pretty prim-and-proper life, even saying in the most recent episode of 'Face Talk' with Tiffany that she wants her partner to be living as well as she is. She even admits that this is a high standard, but she confesses that she does, in fact, have high standards.

BUT

Just because she's #3, doesn't mean she wouldn't be down to send spicy stuff over at all. I feel like there would probably be a pretty big gap between her and Sooyoung, even though they're one placement apart. After all, Seohyun did play the female lead in that BDSM movie 'Love and Leashes' (she's the one playing the dom btw - also, as far as I know, it's a completely SFW movie) and she is currently playing the lead for the TV Show 'The First Night with the Duke', in which she apparently filmed a pretty spicy sex scene with Taecyeon (yes, from 2PM), albeit censored and whatnot as you'd expect of a Korean TV show being aired on a public TV station.

"In other news, gang activity here in Tokyo is on the rise now more than ever. Speculation has been led to believe that it could be from a supposed underground hiding away from where the average civilian could see. So far, no one has come forward with explanations and any attempts at us interviewing locals have been shut down," you began.

"However, from what the authorities reported, there are rumors that there are possibly gangs ruling deep within," you continued, walking a bit to the side as you reported on. People were walking by in the background, not minding the news reporter doing her job.

You knew better but would never let the audience or even coworkers know on live. Over the years after Tenjiku disbanded after the death of Izana, you befriended the Hanagaki kid and his friends and would later team up with them back during when three gangs ruled the prefecture; one having an iron fist compared to the others. You preferred to forget and to keep the past in the past.

"Recently, police have been trying to get more information but so far have only found dead ends. Will we ever know more about what could have Tokyo and possibly all of Japan trembling in fear? We may not know, or possibly ever." You added.

You could feel someone staring at you from a distance, but chose to not pay attention in order to not worry your cameraman and everyone watching live.

You would then end the report with your name along with, "NHK News. Back to you, Ishihara." Finally ending the live report before exhaling a long sigh, shoulders seemed to sag now that the act was over.

"What's wrong?" the cameraman asked, observing your exhaustion as he began packing up his equipment. The concerned tone he took was not lost on you.

You breathed in before you began, "I don't know what to do, Onaga. Ever since the divorce, I’ve been feeling drained lately. Not only that, I feel like I've been being watched and followed home. I don't want to think that I'm going crazy or paranoid, but I really think that someone is out to get me. I know that it's not my ex husband; although we're no longer together, he would never do that."

"I feel like it's not just anyone that could be stalking me… I feel like it's him," you finished, scratching at your hair almost nervously.

Onaga silently listened on before commenting, "Who? Who's this 'him'?" He asked.

Over the years you two had remained close despite outgrowing the delinquent lifestyle and Onaga always had an ear to bend whenever you needed it. Even as he now worked as your cameraman, he still remained by your side and looked out for you.

"Ran," you whispered softly, as if you were afraid to utter his name out loud. This made Onaga's eyes widen.

"Haitani?! You think it's really him?" He whisper-yelled, quickly looking around to see if anyone else was tuning in on the conversation.

Nodding in response as you put away your microphone as you continued, "I know it's him, I can feel it. If it truly is, I don't know what he could possibly want from me. And it hurts because I never got to have any closure with him nor Rindou. I never even got to talk with Kakucho again after everything that happened. I don't even see him when I go to visit Izana’s grave. I miss them all so much," you finished, fiddling with your fingers. A small habit from old times that popped up every now and then.

Onaga remained quiet, he was never big on you dating the older Haitani brother but kept quiet once he saw how happy he made you and vice versa. However, things took a drastic turn when one day you called him sobbing, telling him that you had a screaming match with Ran. That was the day you broke things off with him and it only got worse from there.

Way before the Three Deities battle happened, you had joined up with Brahman and Ran never hid disapproval of it as he and Rindou were in Rokuhara Tandai and that would’ve made you enemies. He even reasoned that you may have as well put a target on your back as some members of Terano’s gang were known to be very aggressive. Once they found out you were a Brahman member, there’s no telling what they would do. Both brothers knew they wouldn’t be able to always protect you.

You both clashed about that a few times but it grew worse after the final battle, as you had broken up and never saw him again afterwards.

Onaga sighed, "Let me drive you home, I feel that it's better that you have someone there with you," he said, putting a hand on your shoulder.

You couldn't thank him enough.

However, you were not expecting to come across a nasty surprise when you stepped into your house. Had you known what impending doom was drawing near, you would’ve never gone home.

There on the kitchen counter after flicking the lights on, was a printed out note in a bold typed out font. As you picked it up to read, your blood ran cold as the following note read: "Stay away from looking more into us or you won't have any eyes to look with anymore, Miss Reporter." And on top of the note, was a flower. Not just a simple, random one; but your favorite flower.

You dropped the note, slumping to the floor in horror from what you just read. As you began struggling and gasping for air as you attempted to sit upright, questions began to flood your mind.

Who did this? Was it– No… after the divorce, he chose to move back to another city far away, his birthplace. He even texted you earlier saying that he made it back there safely. Sure you were now divorced, but it was a mutual decision and it was for the best.

And most of all, he never knew about you researching Bonten in your free time.

That had to be the case. Someone from the criminal organization somehow found out about your digging for more info to satisfy any curiosity for the day and put up the threat to stay away.

Whenever you were not working or had plans, you spent a lot of time looking more into Bonten privately and taking notes. You even went as far as interviewing shady people in dark and quiet places where hopefully no one would catch sight of your makeshift interview. Maybe one of those interviewees ratted you out? But why place a flower along, much less your favorite? A lucky guess maybe? Unless…

No. There was no way.

You tried to sit up, using the wall as support, trying to regulate your breathing. Could it really have been from him? But why would he threaten you this way? Was it an order to make a threat? Or was he the one that found out about you digging deeper?

But why now after ten years? What could he possibly want from you after all this time? You had hoped that he had moved on the same as yourself.

You had to call for help, but who were you going to call? The police? No, they won't bother. Onaga would have to do it for now, hopefully he wasn’t far.

Your hands shook as you began dialing your friend’s number, trying to calm down. Unfortunately, that plan was already falling through.

“No service?! What do you mean there’s no service?” You whispered, hands barely able to grip your phone. Panic began to skyrocket within you, what were you going to do? Run out of the house screaming for help? Your neighbors would give you strange looks and think you’re crazy but do you really have any other choice?

As you were ready to get up and make a break for it, that was when you heard it: footsteps. And some dragging along the floor. Your heart began to pound as both drew nearer, until the dragging stopped. But the footsteps never did.

You remained frozen in place, as if that was enough to save you from whoever was taking their sweet time in getting closer. You began to sob quietly as you curled up into a ball, hiding your face into your arms. You should’ve quickly moved to turn off the lights so you’d have a better chance of hiding; and now it was too late. All you could do now was hide away your face and remain still.

“How pretty.”

Your heart dropped as you slowly peeked to see who was talking to you. Your eyes widened as you recognized who it was.

Ran Haitani, the one that was supposed to be your forever. Despite it being ten years since you last saw him, you would never forget his face nor the sound of his voice. But you knew this wasn’t the same Ran you knew and loved so long ago. Despite his signature smile you still remembered, he looked at you with a calculating gaze that prevented you from moving. Looking over his new appearance, you noticed that he had traces of red dotting along his once pristine suit and cheek. This did not seem to bother him.

Despite getting no answer, he continued, “Why, you’re still very pretty just like the last time I saw you. In fact, calling you pretty is a big understatement; I should’ve said that you’re as beautiful as here.” He took a few steps closer despite you pushing yourself against the wall more. As if it would help keep him away.

“Ran, why are you here? Please, please don’t hurt me… what could you possibly want?” You asked, raising your arms a bit. Ran’s smile disappeared and formed into a frown.

“I would never hurt you, love. How could you forget that I never would dream of such a thing?” He asked. “I knew you would move on eventually, but you wound me. ”

“I’m sorry,” you spoke softly. “Look if this is some type you’re pulling, you’ve had your fun. Please leave.” You hated to beg like this, but he was terrifying you and you didn’t like it a single bit.

Ran’s frown only grew deeper, “Why? I thought we would have a happy reunion, just you and me. Did your dear old husband get into your head? Shame. I guess it makes sense considering that he stole your heart after I did.” Dread started to fill you immediately. If your blood wasn’t turning cold enough, you swore it was becoming icier at this moment.

“What did you do to him? He has nothing to do with me and you, leave him alone, please,” you said, almost demanding, only to be interrupted by a chuckle.

“Oh, you still care for him even after divorcing him, I see. It’s way too late for that, sweetheart.” Having said this, he would step back from you and walk to the corner he had come from. The dragging you heard earlier was back and the realization hit you more than you could’ve imagined once you connected the dots and saw the sight.

Placing the body a few feet away from you, you covered your mouth to muffle your screams. Laying on the floor covered in blood was your ex husband, no longer moving. Murdered by the man you once loved so long ago.

The quiet crying in the beginning turned into sobbing, “Why…? Ran, why did you do this?! He was innocent–”

This made him tilt his head in confusion. “My love, you don’t mean to tell me that you still care for this man even after separating. I love you,” he said, ignoring your crying as if it were nothing. “I may be years late, but the company I’m with… they’re not ideal,” he added with a chuckle. “But after being sent to give you a warning, I have a chance. I can take you with me and convince my ol’ leader to let you stay. Rindou would be happy to see you again, even if he won’t admit it.”

As he spoke, he once again stepped closer to you, this time closer than where he was before.

“Leave, just leave me be. Go away, please. You’re lying about everything,” you raised your hands in surrender, tears still running down your cheeks. You couldn’t believe that this was how you two would reunite. From what he said earlier, it was easy for you to put two and two together and learn that he was a part of them: Bonten. The organization that truly had all of Japan at their feet. There’s no way he could want you back without killing you.

“I do love you, I never stopped loving you even after so long. And it takes a lot of love for a person to do this,” He said matter-of-factly, gesturing to the still bloodied body of your ex husband. “I know you still have some love for me, don’t you? You could live a lavish lifestyle with me, and be treated as the queen you are. Way better than how he treated you during your marriage,” You immediately shook your head.

“You know you want it,” Ran stated, smirking. Another headshake was your response. “You’d love it.”

You shook your head again, more frantic this time. This made his smirk grow wider into a smile you’d never seen before. Was this the last expression his victims saw before he killed them?

“Yes,” he moved even closer before leaning down to your level, uncomfortably close to you where you could feel his breath fanning against your skin.

Your old flame would gently caress your cheek, so gentle despite the violent act he did just before you came home. Feeling some blood that was left on his fingers now touching you made you wince and stiffen up.

“Don’t worry, my love, you’ll learn that the life I can give you will be better than this. I can protect you this time.” His smile grew softer as he said this.

You still had those feelings of dread and panic but this made them sink deeper than ever. There was no way out and you knew it, you were trapped.

Now you were stuck with the man who had your heart ten years ago who was now someone you greatly feared after forcing his way back into your life.

So, this is Lestat's profile from the Talamasca show website. And one interesting thing from it is this little bit in it that says:

Has been known to turn humans against their will

Because, um, no? The only person Lestat ever turned against their will was David Talbot... which was a Tale of the Body Thief thing. A book that should be nowhere near close to having happened yet, if we're going by how the show appears to be sticking to adapting each VC book in order.

And look, it's just a website. This could just be a mistake they put in Lestat's profile when just drawing for info from the books for it. Something similar kinda happened in Season 1, with one of the pages of Claudia's diaries, which contained a direct quote from The Vampire Lestat book in it.

But still, that said, I think it's fun to speculate. 🙂

The easiest speculation is that the Talamasca has Lestat confused with his Maker, Magnus. Because Magnus forced himself on Lestat and turned Lestat against his will. And the Talamasca might just have mixed that up.

Another thing that this could be is that David Talbot and Lestat already met at the same time it first happened in the books (1985/6), and Lestat already turned David without the events of Body Thief having happened yet (in 1990). I don't think that is impossible.

And yeah, the timeline doesn't appear to work, given what we saw at the end of Season 2. But, we actually don't know how much time passed between the end of the interview and the publishing of the IWTV book. And then, when Louis and Daniel had their little telepathic convo.

Also, could we all maybe just be assuming Daniel will already be a vampire when he and Lestat have their interview in Season 3?

Because I have to say, Daniel's coughing in that Comic-Con teaser had me raising an eyebrow, given that I was assuming he was turned already when he was talking to Lestat when I was watching it the first time.

And yeah, the implication was that Lestat was doing something to Daniel to make him start coughing like that, but... maybe he wasn't? 🤔

Anyway, as I said just a day or so ago, there is actually no way to verify if Daniel was telling the truth about who (or implying who) his Maker was. Unless we see his turning being done.

Okazaki mentioned smtg along the lines of Ninomiya struggling to keep meaningful relationships which is the reason why his past relationships didn't last a long while, considering the fact aroace is not a very well known queer identity, there's a chance Ninomiya doesn't even know what aroace is, let alone know HE is aroace himself (or, if he somehow knows, is in denial), and since society kind of expects everyone to have a deep romantic bond with someone, otherwise you are considred broken or "need to find the right person" Ninomiya could be forcing himself into feeling smtg by getting in those short lasting relationships, which ofc, doesn't work (we could also have a sort of aroace version of [Boy Talk] which, yk, would be AWESOME)

Ik we don't have nearly enough about Ninomiya to be 100% sure with this, but I just think this would be an interesting character arc (and again, I NEED AN AROACE CHARACTER WHO'S SEXUALITY ACTUALLY MATTERS PLEASE I'M DESPARATE), but I could definetly be wrong, this is just a speculation after all and a silly one at that

Disclaimer: Halfway through when I was writing this post initially, I took a break for a while since I didn't really know what I wanted to do with all the information in it, since I didn't understand the egg rooms in Chapters 3 & 4 Properly. Then I did understand them.

Finally got around to doing the egg room for chapter 3 after missing it and only getting the others and I am so glad I did.

I have lots of thoughts and want to sum them up here, so pardon me if I rehash information, speculate, or just sound outright unintelligible. These won’t just be limited to the Egg Rooms but will involve a good amount of stuff related to them.

There will be many things I discuss, and in the end I will be discussing a theory that I think others have had, but it's been one that's stewing in my brain and I desperately need to get it out.

I feel like out of all the egg rooms, this one and chapter 4’s really gave us a lot to think about in terms of the eggs themselves and their surroundings.

Chapter 3’s being the first ones we’ve seen with other beings is really interesting to me for a number of reasons.

In this room, Kris starts out as if they were not in the Dark World. And it makes sense because they’re not in the Dark World, they’re “Nowhere”. It’s not a place where darkness is deeper than it can be, nor is it the normal world, it is just that, Nowhere. And I think it's possible that whenever it started to become a real, tangible place when Kris visited, that's when it started to creep in, whatever it is that was outside of Nowhere, which is why Kris became their Dark World Form again, because the outside was coming in, the Dark was let inside of a place it wasn't aware of before.

It’s a place for people who are forgotten and “Copies”, such as:

the Rudinn “cards”.

Before anything serious I just love Kris’ thought process of “I suck at cards so I’ll just make my own copies!” These glimpses into their character pre-Us is always so charming to see. But anyways, the Rudinns give us some insight into certain “Rules”, such as those of copies. It’s a slight thing, but they tell us that copies have no color, and the only reason they do is because Kris gave them their color. Now this leads us to something people already probably knew about

The Goners, the characters in Undertale that had no real “place” outside of random chance. The Goners, to me, always seemed as if they were some kind of parodies of certain NPCs such as Monster Kid and The Clam Neighbor. Some of them may not exist in the world people inhabit(depending on FUN value), and some actively replace people who do exist, such as the clam neighbor. I still have no clue what they are meant for, but I do think that Gaster had a hand in their creation, considering the Goner Maker in Chapter 1 and the followers consistently mentioning him.

Everything that's been said about "Copies" takes more of a form when you also look at the pipeline of The Prophecy turning into The Lord of The Hammer turning into Dragon Blazers. Now, there's an entire discussion to be had with Dragon Blazers and Undertale (not Deltarune) and the symbolism of it being a "simplified" and "altered" version of Deltarune the way Dragon Blazers could have been of Lord of The Hammer and so on. But that's for another day. All I want to say is that I think there is a difference being drawn between copies and things that truly had passion put into them, after all:

It makes me think that maybe Gaster's Followers/The Goners could have either been copies of existing people such as Goner Kid(If they even are a copy)

Or some could have been beings that had something drained from them that caused their "color to fade", such as the Clam Girl/"Suzy's" Neighbor

Now then, this brings me to my last point:

The Forgotten Man.

The Forgotten Man, The Man that was behind the tree, is something that's been in the back of my head for years now.

And I think with Chapter 4, it's at least possible to interpret what he means in the context of the Egg Rooms.

In Chapter 3, he talks about how "You"(We'll just assume it's Kris for the sake of this discussion but it could very well be the Player) forgot about him multiple times, and he discusses things such as his schedule (The last part of which I totally think foreshadows Chapter 5's egg room because of Chapter 5 having been intended to be released alongside 3 & 4)

And also, he talks about the Egg. We learn what it is he gives us the egg for.

It's so we remember him.

Which brings me to what I think he means to Kris.

Throughout Chapters 3 & 4 Toby brings to light so many things he'd been foreshadowing with Dess, her disappearance, and what it did to Kris. And that brings us to Chapter 4's Egg Room.

Therapy.

In Chapter 3, when you get the Shadow Mantle, there's an enemy in the dungeon that you don't kill. Kris kills them.

There is no added context in-game for what it is, but in the files, you can see the placeholder for it.

A black deer.

December's disappearance was something that clearly affected Kris a good deal, and it becomes more and more apparent when you think about the things that they've done for "The Knight". They work with the Knight to create the Dark Fountains, but also close them. They do everything in their power to not impede the Knight, but they still want to make Susie and Ralsei happy.

I think that Kris is beholden to something that they promised Dess long ago, maybe around the time she disappeared. I think Kris flinched when they saw the Shelter in the game because they know what's in there. I think the reason they didn't immediately throw the controller out when you got in is because they were relieved. Because they realized that whatever force made the game didn't put what was actually in the shelter in the game.

I think the reason why Kris didn't open the closet even though Susie was gone and they could throw us out, is because they were scared of what they would see in the real world.

I think that Kris killed, or at least indirectly caused Dess' death. Do I think it was intentional? No. I do not think for a second Kris ever would have purposefuly harmed her. I think Kris regrets it. I think they regret it every single second they're awake. And I think, that more than anything else, they try to Forget it.

The Forgotten Man, I think, either represents or parallels the way that Kris constantly represses everything about Dess' disappearance. I think that every time Kris remembers something, they immediately push it down. They keep forgetting...

But we just keep. pushing.

Every time we push to remember, they forget. And every time they forget, the path to reach those memories again gets more and more complex. We went from going into a random room over and over again(With the only thing to remind them of her being an enemy that throws STARS at us), to finding a random room hidden behind a stained glass window with one part of it that resembled an egg.

We just push. and push. and push. And every time we push, the dam gets leakier.

Because at first it was just an egg. Then it was still an egg. But then it was a conversation with a man they want to forget. And then it was a painting that they so desperately wanted to forget about. And next? If the clues are right? We're going to Asgore's Dark World.

And while Tenna only referenced Dess in a manner that implied her being alive? Asgore is heavily implied to have a very, very, personal stake in Dess' disappearance.

I think that the purpose of the eggs is not something tangible that'll be visible in-game or in stats. But rather, I think that they're a sign that we are on the path that leads to Kris finally having to confront whatever it is that they want so badly to forget. And I don't know if it'll have an effect on the game, but I think it'll have an effect on Kris. And whether or not they move on from it, from feeling indebted to a rotting corpse, from feeling like they owe Carol or whoever's manipulating them their service, I think that maybe, juuust maybe, it'll lead us down a path that, while not important to our progress, is important to Kris' progress as a person.

So Uhhh... SOTM DayCarw Attendant Lore, Huh? (SPOILERS)

Secret Of The Mimic has some...interesting... Daycare Attendant lore and designs.

The Moon suit is straight-up hilarious. I'm sorry. I was expecting possible prototype models for Sun and Moon, but that one really caught me off guard. Gotta love ball Moon.

Moon.exe is the most interesting piece of Daycare Attendant lore by far, though. It seems to have double implications. For starters, it seemingly does some representational storytelling about Fiona, Edwin, and the Mimic. But I'm going to assume it also has implications regarding the Daycare Attendant. In Moon.exe, we find pieces to build Moon. We straight-up see and build the same design that we see in Security Breach. That has gotta be more than just a coincidence and more than just representing the Murray family. Sun is also Fiona. F10-N4 is also represented as a sun on her when we "meet her face-to-face." We also see a lot of sun and moon props throughout the game. We do not see any sort of costume design for Sun himself, however, nor do we see one for Eclipse.

I haven't had much time to sit and properly comprehend the meaning of any of this stuff fully, at least in regards to the Daycare Attendant himself. The game hasn't been out that long, after all.

Did F10-N4 perhaps design the current design Daycare Attendant we know and love? I don't think she designed Sleepy Moon (Ball Moon). I mean, it seems like something either of them could have designed. Like a love child of sorts. Just like M2. As I theorized, the Data Diver is definitely involved in their creation. It is literally called Moon.exe as well. It's pretty straightforward what that entails, and what its original purpose was. Although we see Fiona being represented by a sun, we don't see Sun's design itself anywhere in the game. He is nonexistent in both the main game and Moon.exe. Same with Eclipse. It looks like Moon came before Sun for sure, unless there was maybe a Fall Fest Sun design we have yet to see in the future. I don't know.

All I know is, Moon's current design can be seen in Moon.exe, and that we see a suit version of him in the secret basement. The ending where we rebuild him in Moon.exe is not the canon ending, which is why I haven't mentioned the line "You rebuilt yourself, but now you are split in two." In that ending, it is mostly used to symbolize the story we see unfold in the main game. We obviously didn't build Sun and Moon via Moon.exe. But I do believe Moon.exe is, well, storing Moon's programming, as its name would suggest. Serves as a fun minigame with lore implications as well. It doesn't explain where Sun or even their merged form, Eclipse, came from. We can only speculate there.

Someone ended up with the Data Diver regardless. Someone who likely used it to build Moon, or perhaps the entire Daycare Attendant. Whether this is the Mimic, F10-N4, or someone else, we can't yet say. But whoever ended up with it would have access to Moon.exe. We know Sun/Moon/Eclipse are all connected to the Data Diver and its future form, the Faz Wrench, in some way. We just have to put the pieces together to figure it out...

The way Ein is treated in PDH S2 is genuinely so frustrating as someone who loves to pick apart characters and their mindsets.

This first section is built on speculation, but I feel like it’s heavily implied that the all-werewolf school he transferred from was very traditional in the way they handled pack politics and daily life. Sniffing people upon first meeting, strict adherence to werewolf rules and customs, how confused and/or uncomfortable he gets when things are settled in a more “human” manner, etc. Like how the fuck is he meant to know things don’t work that way there…? They keep throwing curveball after curveball at him and getting mad when he doesn’t react like everyone else. And it’s not like any of the other werewolves were gonna explain to him how things work at their school considering they all hate him, and Aphmau can’t help with that either because she’s absolutely fucking clueless about the culture she’s shoved herself into and doesn’t bother explaining to him why she leads the way she does outside of “this is how I do things!”. He suddenly went from a very rigid form of the pack system to this weird, mixed-up version, not to mention suddenly going from an all-werewolf school to one with students of all kinds of different races(?) with no adjustment period. Moving schools is already a difficult process for kids but I can only imagine something like that would make it a million times harder. Especially with no support from your peers.

Also I’m sorry but I do not feel fucking bad for Dottie, Daniel, and Rylan having to pick one of them to be the omega. Love them but they didn’t give two shits about bullying and isolating the omega until it got turned around on them and they realized it wasn’t fun being harassed. Maybe I’m just a petty bitch but if I was in Ein’s position and I could get back at someone who bullied me by putting them in my place I would do it too. “Oh well he went too far with it!” I don’t fucking care! He is a 15 year old child who suddenly went from being hated and harassed by his entire community to being in charge of all of them within a day. Obviously it’s going to get to his head. OBVIOUSLY he’s going to do stupid shit because he feels suddenly untouchable. I’m not going to blame a child for not being mature enough to responsibly lead an entire group of like a hundred other children or handle his emotions properly!

Anyway, proceeding to show Aaron keeping his role as omega instead of picking one of those three to make Ein look like an unreasonable asshole was also just an insane thing to witness cuz how on gods green earth was he supposed to know he could do that. The teacher’s reaction in the flashback shows plain as day that that is not something that’s happened before and it’s not like he told Aphmau or Ein they were allowed to do that so how the fuck was he supposed to know that was possible. And it’s not like he was even in the wrong for picking an Omega in the first place because he was LITERALLY TOLD TO. “Oh it’s different bc those three are pups! They can’t defend themselves!” and yet the weakest members of the pack are ALWAYS candidates to be the Omega? You can’t tell us werewolf rules and then expect us to think Ein is in the wrong for adhering to them, that’s fucking stupid.

And, a little bit of a tangent, the fact that the scene of Ein telling Kai he can’t compete to be the werewolf alpha is framed in a way to make it seem like EIN is the one in the wrong is actually fucking bonkers. Kai is not apart of that culture. He has no fucking right trying to insert himself in their politics let alone LEAD them. Ein was completely justified in telling him to fuck off no matter his intentions. Sorry not sorry.

And, love Jess to bits, not trying to come for her, but the entire “Ein was manipulating Aphmau all along” twist was fucking stupid. It relies almost entirely on you watching Emerald Secret alongside it in order for it to not be obviously out of left field. And I’m sorry but if you need to watch an entirely different series for your twist to work, it fucking sucks. The only actual hint toward it is the other wolves being weirded by him but even then it’s implied that’s because he’s 1. A transfer from a different pack and 2. The omega??? So it’s like okay what else do we have. Him finding Aphmau being the alpha as a human weird? Okay well that’s not a hint either cuz it literally IS weird considering she is not apart of their culture. Him insisting Kai can’t compete to become the alpha? Also not a hint because YEAH THATS FUCKING CRAZY???? Not to mention there is no 15yo on this planet who is that good at manipulation. Sorry but it’s true. I think the plot would’ve worked a lot better if they’d gone the “power corrupts’ route instead of the “secret evil master manipulator” route. But yk we can’t have TOO many people sympathizing with our villain, or else they might realize a grown man coming back to beat up this high school sophomore is fucked up! Speaking of.

The fact that we, as the audience, are supposed to see Aaron, a grown man, sneaking into the school in a stolen uniform, beating the shit out of this 15yo child because he tried to sabotage his relationship with another 15yo (which like, technically a dick move but also get away from that little girl), and then throwing one of the kids who is SHOWN to have bullied Ein out with him to make it look like he did it, and view that as a GOOD THING is actually horrific. Aaron gets a pass for this and all the other weird or straight up awful shit he does but god forbid Ein step one foot out of line or else he’ll suffer the narrative’s wrath!

And then he gets manipulated and exploited by a literal demon from hell and somehow he is still the devil! Yeah man! Whatever!

Anyways, rant over. I hate this series and this fandom for the way they treat Ein and refuse to see the nuance in his character.

What do u think is the difference between the Apothecary diaries world and our current world's reality? Is the modern world we live in now, capitalistic as a primary? What do you think Jinshi and Maomao's position would be in our world? Given that our world would be more technologically dependant for AI revolution, after 5 years.

These are some interesting questions! I’ll try my best to answer but Ill admit I’m not the best at in-world to modern stuff as I tend to do speculations on in-world plots most. (Spoilers below)

Our world is based in capitalism and I would argue that the world of Apothecary Diaries is also. Even though they have an agricultural system and the Imperial Dynasty holds relationships with other nations through trade, there is still the capitalist mindset in the often everyday dealings of the populace. Take for instance how Maomao often seeks to find ways to make a profit herself. Like when she receives all of the Go books from Lakan in LN 8 and makes a deal with En’en to find the best way to increase supply and demand to turn a profit. The same goes for her stall at the Verdigris House where she doesn’t just give away free medical services. Also Maomao mentions how the madam of the House finds ways to turn her own profit by increasing the value of a deal through Maomao or bargaining for the best with other merchants, something Maomao herself does when she’s seen to go about her purchasing. These are all evidences of a capitalist mindset even if the society itself in the novels may be more trade oriented as a whole.

People want to say having that completion in a capitalist society or private ownership is a bad thing but I don’t agree, even for the world of the novels, without competition there would be no push to make a better product for the populace. Again in LN 8 when Maomao takes Yao to a store where she can purchase makeup and discovers that there are shelves empty due to the risk of toxic face powder, this woman’s business has succeeed without it because she makes superior product. It’s said that others are still selling the poisoned product because either they lack money or are unscrupulous but without the competition for better people wouldn’t have been pushed to stop using what may have been harmful to turn a profit, instead they had to come up with newer and better solutions which only happened because of the capitalist system. In this way I think Apothecary Diaries shows a good mix of our modern world and the historical one since there is still a basis in the government setting prices based on agricultural yield while at the same time the people have no problems using supply and demand along with private holding of products to increase the value of their own goods.

As for what Maomao and Jinshi would be in the modern world, this is just fun speculation or really fanfic cause speculation is more based in actual plot and this is just me making stuff up haha. I’m actually drawing from a Reddit post I saw awhile back and liked their idea so I’ll expand upon that. It started with Jinshi being the son of a hospital CEO and Maomao a nurse practitioner at the hospital. Given the general storyline Jinshi would be pushed into administration despite not wanting to take over as the CEO. Currently he’s working as a Resident in the hospital and is Maomao’s boss. She’s seeking to become a doctor and her adopted father, Luomen, is the owner of a holistic medicine facility where she learned a lot of her early medicine. Her mother is a terminal cancer patient she’s been treating on one of the lower floors in service to her grams who she isn’t related to but helped raise her along with her three “sisters”. They all work at a local drinking establishment and live in a series of connected apartments above it. Her biological father Lakan is the CEO of a pharmaceutical research facility and would like Maomao to come and work for him which she rejects but she does occasionally volunteer to be the test subject for the company’s latest drug trials. That’s as far as I get in modern AU speculation 😂 I don’t tend to do very good with fanfic so I hope that’s not terrible and some of what you were looking for haha.

As for their use of technology or AI, I think both would probably reject it. Maomao has always been such a hands on person. She doesn’t like to take shortcuts or feel like she hasn’t been thorough in examining every aspect of a case presented to her. Like in LN 7 when she suspected the shrine maiden was going to commit suicide, she put the poisoned spoon in her own mouth. We could argue this is her own funny proclivity to test the medicine because she wants to feel its effects but also I think it’s her desire to be sure of her own conclusions by testing the method herself vs just stating it without conclusive evidence. Technology wouldn’t give her the proof she’d always be looking for.

Jinshi is much the same way. Part of the reason he’s so overworked once he takes over his role as the Moon Prince is because he has a hard time delegating difficult tasks to subordinates and believes it inappropriate to do so. I don’t think he’d view it as ok to let AI do parts of his work or even certain technological advancements help him unless it’s only like spell check because he’d be too concerned about lives being at risk given the importance of his assignments due to his station. Jinshi wants to be assured that if he puts his name to something he’s done it right and been diligent in taking care of all aspects of the situation. I doubt technology would give him that sense and would probably make him feel as if he’d taken unnecessary shortcuts.

So overall no I don’t think Maomao or Jinshi would use much technology or AI given their personalities and commitment related to their work. They’re both simply too devoted to making sure they come to the right conclusions and don’t risk other people in the process. I feel they wouldn’t want to involve technology as it takes away that human element which allows for deeper reasoning and thoughtfulness vs easy answers.

It might be insensitive, but you were tired of hearing about it. You didn't care about the craze, plus you didn’t even know the victims. It was just another tragedy that was eventually going to be solved. Fade away and taken over by another murder case.

On the other hand, and to make it even worse… People are wearing ghostface masks. Playing pranks on everyone. The goddamn costume should freak you out but instead… you found it incredibly hot. Sometimes you even thought about it while fucking yourself before drifting off to sleep and wake up soaked from your ghostface dreams, taking care of your ache all over again in the morning.

It was finally the end of the month which meant a huge pool party at the frat house once the last week was over. The place was packed with drunk college students, drugs everywhere and people making out in every corner.

You were guilty yourself, having made out with the mysterious bad boy you’d been eyeing for a while. You found his best friend pretty cute too, a little on the goofy side, but you’ve no doubt he can work magic with that tongue of his that he stuck out more often than normal.

After your little makeout session, alcohol, and some pot you needed a breather so you escaped to the campus bathroom, where it was sure to be quiet and empty.

Was it a good idea for you to be wandering around so late at night, alone? No. Did you care? Not really.

Gasping, you turned around and in the blink of an eye you were pushed against the mirror. A large hand around your neck. When you looked up at the tall figure it was him.

Your heart rate went up and you started to struggle against him, but there was no use. You weren’t going anywhere, but you kept trying. Pushing and kicking, but his grasp only got tighter. Stronger.

“Fuck… Please,” you managed to say.

“Please, what?” He spoke and you froze.

You’d never heard the one and only speak and in a sick, twisted way it sent a bolt of pleasure between your legs.

He squeezed your neck a bit harder and you let out a pathetic whimper.

“Oh, you like that?” Ghostface spoke again and held your waist with his free hand, sliding it down slowly before pulling the strings of your bikini. The feel of his leather gloves sent goosebumps down your legs and as fucked up as the situation is, you were too affected by the substances that were coursing through your body to care.

You were panting, needy as ever. When you felt his gloved hand reach between your legs and over your mound of hair, you let out another needy whine.

Ghostface chuckled at your reactions and little noises, enjoying the fucked up effect he has on you.

Theory-wise can't be too crazily sold on it. Odd's parents aren't the most observant of their kids (and canon pretty much makes it seem like they're so busy they don't really keep an eye on what goes on in their kids lives) so I imagine what is happening with Kiwi slips under the rug. That and perhaps Odd's sisters don't want to admit they let their little brother sneak off with the family dog, either out of sibling comrodery or they don't want to get in trouble for this as well lol

I've seen some authors like to offer the headcanon that Odd likes to dye his hair (I'm one of those writers haha, Evolution may have been extremely shaky but there are some ideas that can certainly work etc etc Odd having brunet hair is one of them). The kid loves to dress up in flamboyant colors, bright pink, yellow, purple, you get the idea. Part of me likes to think it's to attract attention, he is just one of six kids after all (mind you the only boy and the youngest of the bunch too). I'm sorta headcanon-posting about Odd's parents being emotionally neglectful. I mean it's also kinda out there in the episode. Sure they "care" on the surface level but they don't really offer much structure? They let him loose, offer unconditional love without any set rules. Obviously there's a fine line given the other side of the spectrum is like, say, Ulrich's family (or father in particular) for example. But too much care without guidance can leave kids feeling in the dark and truly not cared for.
