i really love how intensely Mirabelle reacts to act 5 Siffrin botched friendquest.
Isabeau is mostly operating out of concern and, eventually, hurt. he already knows something’s up before Siffrin gets to him. he knows something truly awful must be wrong for Siffrin to be lashing out like they are, and as soon as he can’t handle the situation anymore, he leaves and asks (with strained cheer) for time apart to cool off.
most of Bonnie’s anger comes from being upset and afraid that Siffrin would willingly put themself in danger for no reason, when that’s exactly why they’ve been so unsettled since the eye incident. they hate that Siffrin values their own life so little, they hate that they’re the cause of any pain or loss for him, and here he is, putting himself in that situation AGAIN. on purpose. it’s loud and explosive, but it’s familiar, too, being “hated” by Bonnie for this reason.
Odile pushes, and keeps pushing, until her concern overwhelms Siffrin and they strike where they know she’s most vulnerable. she gets physical, just for a moment, grabbing his collar before controlling herself and letting go. her fury shuts down into cold detachment, and she walks away.
but Mirabelle—dear, sweet, gentle, loving Mirabelle, “the most wonderful being on earth,” with her secret “ruthless side” that largely involves lightly badmouthing people behind their backs and then apologizing—slaps them. immediately.
and then COMPLETELY RENOUNCES THEIR FRIENDSHIP.
not just “we’re not friends anymore,” but “we were never friends in the first place.”
that’s!!! pretty extreme!!!!
of course, she ALSO starts by asking what’s wrong. something must have happened for him to act like this. but as soon as Siffrin brushes her off, she jumps past that line of questioning and dives headfirst into re-evaluating everything she thought she knew about them as a a person.
if he could say something like that to her and not see anything wrong with it, then she was wrong to treat him as a friend, wrong to read camaraderie into his teasing, wrong to think they must care about them all under their aloof demeanor.
that’s how Mirabelle phrases it—“I was wrong about you”—but i think that there’s a hidden layer of I was right about you, too.
she talks about the way they tease her like she had to convince herself that he was doing it in a friendly way. she says they talk like they “know better than her” like that’s a thought she’s had for a LONG time.
“Always soooo mysterious, Siffrin, always talking as if you're better than me! As if you know me!!! But you don't, Siffrin!!! You're just as lost and useless as I am!!! So stop!!! Talking!!! As if you know me!!!!!!”
none of this comes across as a new, sudden way to view Siffrin for her. it doesn’t shock or confuse her. it makes her angry, defensive, almost like she was waiting for something like this to happen at some point. the feeling of resentment, frustration, jealousy, being patronized and condescended to—this is something she’s been actively pushing down and rejecting this entire time, but they’ve given her ample reason for it all to boil to the surface. violently.
Mirabelle’s kindness is not inherent or easy. it’s a choice she’s making. she treats Siffrin warmly because she gives him the benefit of the doubt—refusing to act based on anxiety-fueled, cynical speculation, and reassuring herself that his actions are driven by care and friendship even if she can’t quite see it.
“I was wrong about you” doesn’t mean she always and without question believed them to be a fundamentally kind, caring person from the beginning—it’s that her first, colder instincts were right, and she was wrong to convince herself otherwise.
never mind that she asked what was wrong at first. she barely gives them time to speak in their own defense, to explain what they really meant by what they said. all of her suppressed doubts and frustrations are getting aired out now, now that all the trust she’d so deliberately placed in him has been betrayed. her pain feels bigger than this singular moment, so when she hurts him back, she makes sure it extends back through the entirety of their relationship for him, too.
“You're awful. You're not my friend, not my ally, not anything. You never were.”
like the others, she goes back to the clocktower and tells Siffrin not to come back until later. but there’s a finality to the way she ends this confrontation that isn’t quite there with the others. Isabeau and Odile reach their breaking point and remove themselves from the situation, asking for space to cool off but still somewhat leaving the door open for Siffrin to tell them what’s really going on at some point. Mirabelle is the only one who tries to fully cut ties—after everything else she says, her “I don’t want to see you until tonight” reads to me somewhat as “I don’t want to see you anymore unless I have to.”
I can’t wait to never see you again.
even back at the clocktower, Mirabelle doesn’t really defend Siffrin’s place in the party when Odile suggests leaving them behind out of concern for their trustworthiness on the most important day of the journey. Isabeau and Bonnie protest out of sentimentality and faith in Siffrin’s abilities and connection to them, and Mirabelle agrees, but

“I agree, but... B-But would he even agree to come with us, still? Maybe they won't even come back tonight...”
she doesn’t say much outside of that. maybe the stutter and hesitation here are signs of regret about how things happened, but she lacks Isabeau and Bonnie’s confidence that Siffrin even wants to come back to them in the first place. she doesn’t trust that their bond was real anymore. maybe it never was in the first place, or maybe she broke whatever was there herself.
and she’s still mad when they finally catch up to Siffrin at the King! and she makes sure Siffrin knows that—after saving them, assuring him that he no longer needs to fight, that they’re all there for him. she still cares, of course she still cares—she’s still hurt, too, but they can figure that part out once there’s less world-ending stuff going on.
she’s the first to say that they all reserve the right to still be angry at Siffrin later—and that they’ve already forgiven him.
she’s also the first to say we want to stay with you, too. it’s not just you.
Tumblr media
she was wrong! she thought they didn’t care but they care so much, it’s overwhelming, it’s world-ending.
i think she’s gonna be wallowing in guilt post-canon the moment she remembers what she said and did TO SIFFRIN and not just what Siffrin said to her. especially now that she knows Siffrin’s exact hangups, and especially especially if she figures out what Siffrin was trying to say.
they put themself through hell out of loneliness and fear that none of the others cared about him the way he cared about them, he was going insane from repetition and exhaustion and hunger and trying to keep them all safe and together, and all they did in the midst of all that was say something kind of mean to her one time (that turned out to not even be MEANT to be mean it was supposed to be HELPFUL they just SAID IT ALL WRONG) and she SLAPPED THEM? and told him that they WEREN’T FRIENDS AT ALL??? how could she!!! she should have known better!! what they said hurt a lot but still!!!
so when they eventually manage to try to talk about it, they end up almost in, like, a guilt competition.
Mirabelle apologizing for how she reacted, that she shouldn’t have yelled or hit him, that she doesn’t want to be the kind of person who acts that way out of anger and she’s sorry that she made Siffrin expect that reaction from her, she should have known better and believed in him more and they only messed up like that because they were losing their mind in a time loop but what’s HER excuse—
and Siffrin going nononono stop I deserved it—(HUH DON’T SAY THAT NO YOU DIDN’T)—and that he should never have said such awful things to her, ever, and she was under so much pressure already with the weight of the country and everyone’s lives and futures and her religion and their whole party counting on her to do this impossible task because she’s the only one who can, all this unbearable expectation and hope crushing her, and they KNEW that but they thought they could skip to the ending as though her feelings didn’t matter at all, like helping her wasn’t as important as saving a little time—
until they’re just. in tears together, apologizing for all the horrible things they did in between complimenting each other’s strength and kindness and resilience and how much they admire each other and saying that no, everything you did was completely understandable, actually, the only one who sucks here is me. which neither of them will accept coming from the other!!
they’re so similar, in ways they couldn’t really understand, before.
warm, affectionate, perfect Mirabelle, the resolute hero, a beacon of compassion and hope for all those around her, who wears her heart on her sleeve, her fear making her courage shine all the brighter—nothing like the insignificant, forgettable Siffrin, too terrified to be known, too fragile to touch, too selfish and disgusting to bear letting go.
cool, mysterious, unflappable Siffrin, the worldly traveler, as charming and silly as they are confident and skilled, who brushed off losing an eye like it was nothing, accepting the risks of this journey with barely more than a shrug—nothing like the anxious, stagnant, undeserving Mirabelle, a fraud and a nobody crumbling under the weight of a mission too important to be entrusted to someone like her, doubting herself, doubting her friends, doubting her mentor, doubting her faith, too weak and brittle to bend and change the way the world needs her to without breaking.
not worth bothering others with their problems. they should be able to handle this alone. stay positive, stay calm. breathe in, and out.
they’ll struggle with it, still—the hiding, the minimizing—but now, they understand each other a little better. they can hold each other accountable for what they leave unsaid.
it’ll get easier, eventually. they have plenty of time.
Tumblr media
#i!!! don’t know how to end posts!#this was supposed to be about One Quick Thought and then i just. kept going.#it’s REALLY LONG. SORRY?#some of this is a rehash of what i said in the mirabelle edition loop hangout post#i didn’t want to repeat EVERYTHING though so. no prologue discussion this time#isat#isat spoilers#in stars and time#in stars and time spoilers#isat mirabelle#isat siffrin#mypost#isat meta#mirasif qpr#it makes me wonder what other negative impressions she’s harboring about the others#surely siffrin isn’t the only one that she has twisted up somewhat in her head in ways that she has to talk herself out of#it’s a very anxiety-based behavior. making up worst-case stories in your head about yourself and other people#and having to remind yourself that those worst cases aren’t necessarily reality#the most obvious (to me) in the party would be comparing herself to Isabeau and feeling Some Type of Way about finding herself lacking#even if no one else sees it like that.#he’s strong he’s brave he’s reliable he’s heroic—he’s COMFORTABLE WITH CHANGE

#meanwhile she’s just!!! same old mirabelle!!!!!#incapable of changing in so many ways that seem so easy for everyone else! what’s wrong with her that she can’t!!!!#if it’s not clear absolutely none of this is like. critical or disparaging of mirabelle. i fucking adore her.#and her handling this the absolute Worst out of all of them (Bonnie included!) is part of that#LET HER BE MESSYYYYYY#btw for those familiar i’m picturing the guilt competition very much in Steven Vs Amethyst (steven universe) style

Wei Wuxian and Narrative Agency – Part Three
For Xiantober Day Five: Past and Present, in which the author gets very unhinged about what parts of the past are shown and how that’s affected by the present!
(Part One | Part Two | Full version on AO3)
The Power of Agency: Shaping the Narrative
When I've discussed Wei Wuxian's agency previously, I’ve talked about how what’s shown and omitted tells us about a character, and we’ve talked about the character himself. Though this is a niche topic, it’s not necessarily something out of the ordinary to analyse, and we can assume everything up to here has been in some way intentional.
This? Linking structure to a character’s in-universe preferences?
This is where we get unhinged.
Before I start, let’s quickly establish something which will be important later: although Wei Wuxian is the central character, MDZS isn’t strictly from his POV. While omitting events a character doesn’t like to dwell on and concealing things the character wishes to hide is common in books with only one narrator, MDZS has multiple narrators which it switches between relatively quickly. This includes Wei Wuxian, but it also includes nearly every major character that appears in the story, and omniscient narrator as well. As a default, this format doesn’t lead to this deliberate shaping and omission because of one character’s preferences, since we have many other sources of information and events – which is what makes Wei Wuxian’s influence over the narrative and structure so interesting. We could have access to a lot more information, and access to it at different times, than we do (and that’s not an insult, quite the opposite!).
To begin: we’ve established that times such as Wei Wuxian’s time on the streets, his three months in the Burial Mounds and his loss in the Siege aren’t shown because Wei Wuxian has little agency there. But that’s not the only special thing about them. They’re also the three most traumatic times in his life, and so moments Wei Wuxian himself either can’t remember, or doesn’t like to dwell on.
This is why discussing Wei Wuxian’s treatment of tragedy in his life was important. Firstly, it shows he doesn’t focus on the tragedy in his life, so the idea that the narrative not focusing on this tragedy relates to his character has merit; secondly, it affirms that this is not a passive trait, but a choice. Therefore, when the narrative omits events due to this aspect of Wei Wuxian, it’s respecting not only a character detail – which would be cool by itself – but also an active decision. One that shapes the story it’s made in.
In other words, its very structure is respecting Wei Wuxian’s agency!
Now, of course there are flashbacks to other moments of his past he probably wouldn’t like to dwell on, too. But within the structure, they’re only shown when Wei Wuxian is thinking about them (or when he has reason to)!
Wei WuXian hadn’t woken up yet. His eyes were still tightly shut, yet his hand didn’t let go either. He seemed to be dreaming, muttering, “
 Don’t
 Don’t be angry
” Lan WangJi seemed somewhat surprised. His voice was gentle, “I am not angry.” Wei WuXian, “
 Oh.” Hearing this, as though he finally felt assured, his fingers loosened. Lan WangJi sat beside Wei WuXian for a while. Seeing that he was motionless again, he was about to stand up when Wei WuXian grabbed him with his other hand, hugging his arm and refusing to let go. He shouted, “I’ll go with you, quick, take me back to your sect!” Chapter 63, EXR translation
Which, of course, is him dwelling on

Lan WangJi spoke one word at a time, “Go back to Gusu with me.” Hearing this, both Wei WuXian and Jiang Cheng were surprised. Quickly afterward, Wei WuXian laughed, “Go back to Gusu with you? To the Cloud Recesses? Why go there?” He immediately seemed to realize, “Oh. I forgot. Your uncle Lan QiRen hates crooked people like me. You’re his proudest disciple, so of course you’re the same as him, haha. I refuse.” Chapter 62, EXR translation

the painful flashback immediately preceding this. The third set of flashbacks (which are also painful) are a similar case. Look at the contex:
He lifted the bottom of his robe, revealing a prosthetic leg made of wood, “This leg of mine was destroyed by you, that night in the Nightless City (
)” (
) “Wei WuXian, I won’t ask you if you remember or not. Both of my parents died by your hands. You owe too many people. You definitely won’t remember them either. But, I, Fang MengChen, will never forget! And never forgive you!” (
) “In the fight at Qiongqi Path, my son was strangled to death by your dog Wen Ning!” “My shixiong died by poison, his entire body festering due to your cruel curse!” Chapter 68 (immediately preceding the flashbacks), EXR translation
And Wei Wuxian’s own thoughts and words:
Wei WuXian looked at the cultivators before the Demon-Slaughtering Cave. Their expressions were the absolute same as those of the cultivators from the night of the pledge conference, pouring their wine on the ground as they took the pledge to scatter the ashes of the Wen Sect’s remnants and him.  (
) Wei WuXian, “Now it’s time to ask just whom it is that treasures it so much. It’s like Wen Ning. Back then, some certain sects or so were scared to death of the Ghost General. They said they’d kill him on the surface, but behind their backs they hid him for over ten years. How strange. Who was the one that said his ashes had been scattered back then?” Chapter 79 (immediately succeeding the flashbacks), EXR translation
Once again, Wei Wuxian’s own thoughts relate to the flashbacks we’ve just been shown. And, as I previously mentioned, though all the events which are shown are tragic, they’re also events which Wei Wuxian’s own choices and actions shaped – which he has this to say about:
“The things I did, not only do you remember them, I remember them too. You won’t forget them, and they’ll stay even longer in my mind!” Chapter 82, EXR
Admittedly, this applies more to the third set of flashbacks than the second (which is still fitting as the third set was the most recent), as in the second, although he still had agency within and influence over his circumstances, the majority of the pain was caused by others’ actions (excluding, of course, the Golden Core transfer
 which is something we know stays for a long time in his mind, albeit with a caveat we’ll soon discuss). But it’s still important to note – especially considering that otherwise, focusing on this very painful time in his life wouldn’t seem like something very in-character for Wei Wuxian to do.
Of course, this can all just be explained by good writing. It is best to insert flashbacks when they’re relevant to the characters and events in the present day! But it is interesting to compare these to the start of the (not painful) Gusu flashbacks, which open this way:
At a later time, Wei WuXian pondered upon the reason why his relationship with Lan WangJi wasn’t good. Getting to the root of the matter, everything started when he was fifteen, coming to the GusuLan Sect with Jiang Cheng to study for three months. Chapter 13, EXR
Again, considering the circumstances around which these flashbacks take place – returning to the Cloud Recesses for the first time since the lectures, and meeting Lan Wangji once more – it makes complete sense for Wei Wuxian to be thinking about these events*. So it does fit the pattern of Wei Wuxian dwelling on something, thus leading to the narrative dwelling on it, too (and being shaped by his thoughts)
 but there’s another layer to this. Importantly, it is the only flashback where Wei Wuxian’s present thoughts don’t lead to this happening, with his thoughts at an unspecified future time leading to it, instead. I like to interpret this as the text saying that, since these events aren’t something Wei Wuxian wouldn’t focus on in normal circumstances, he can dwell on them at any time. Therefore, they’re free to come up in the narrative at any time as well, even if he’s not dwelling on them in the present moment!
So, to summarise: Wei Wuxian’s decision not to focus on the painful times in his life directly influences the narrative to not focus on these times. When painful times are brought up and shown to us, it’s in the context of him thinking about them in the present day, and even then, his most painful moments still aren’t shown to us. His agency in this regard is still respected by the narrative structure.
This is the main way his agency influences the structure of the narrative, but I’d like to talk about the revealing and concealing of information, too. For example, I said I’d talk about the Golden Core transfer – though Wei Wuxian does think about this many times, as evidenced by his internal narration in Chapter 103. But unlike everything we’re shown through the flashbacks, this is something Wei Wuxian is actively trying to hide from others. And the narrative respects this choice (Wei Wuxian’s agency, again), never reveals it even when it would be relevant in the flashbacks, and we find out not through narration, but through a character’s dialogue!
And to clarify – I know these aspects may not be in the book for this exact reason. Showing flashbacks in relevant moments is good writing, concealing an important plot point you want to do a reveal for is necessary writing, and MXTX has said she didn’t want to write about Wei Wuxian’s time in the Burial Mounds, due to not liking to write transformation sequences (and also because it would not be pleasant at all, which likely also applies to Wei Wuxian’s death). That doesn’t prevent it from also being intentional – MXTX’s intelligence is shown in many aspects of this book, and there’s nothing disproving it – but there’s no proof for either option, so I won’t pretend there is. I bring this up because I know this feels like I’m overanalysing, as I feel that way as well.
But, whether it’s intentional or not, it exists in the text, and I adore it – so, regardless, it’s something I’ll explore. Because taking this into account
 We aren't just told about Wei Wuxian having agency, we aren’t just shown it in the text, we aren’t even just shown it through which parts of his past are shown and hidden in the structure of the text (as I talked about in Part One). The parts of the past that are shown and hidden also have an in-universe reason for being shown and hidden, this reason being the choices he makes! Agency is the ability of a character to influence the story they’re in, but Wei Wuxian’s agency, as a property of a character who only exists in-universe, shapes the out-of-universe structure as well! That’s how we’re shown its importance! How cool is that?
At The End Of The Road: Summary and Final Thoughts
In this essay, we’ve covered how important Wei Wuxian’s agency is not only to the events of the plot, but to the structure of the narrative as well. The narrative omits periods in which Wei Wuxian has little or no agency, in favour of showing us periods in which he does, even when important events happened in the former. This indicates that who Wei Wuxian is without agency isn’t important enough to be shown to the audience, and therefore that his agency is an integral aspect of his character in MDZS. We’ve discussed how both in-universe and out-of-universe, tragedy does not define him – out-of-universe, the tragic events in Wei Wuxian’s life are used not to build sympathy but rather to show his strength of character and who he still is despite going through them; and in-universe, he chooses not to focus on the negativity and resentment caused by his circumstances or others’ actions, instead staying true to his moral compass and enjoying his life in the present day. Finally, we’ve also explored how this choice is another reason for the omission of certain events from the narrative, resulting in his agency shaping the story in a very literal way – it affects the out-of-universe structure, as well.
It’s quite fitting, for a story whose essence is about defying a conventional narrative – that of righteous clans rising up and defeating a great evil – and about a character who defies many conventional narratives on his own – that of status defining how skilled you could be, that for a golden core being necessary for cultivation and other paths being unavailable, that of a tragic but complete story of someone killed for staying true to their moral code (instead, that character returns to life and has a happy ending) – to have its own narrative play a role in such an important and interesting way.
(Or, if an image would be preferable:)

*This strong relation to the present day circumstances is another reason I love the flashback placement so much (and why I think it’s such a loss both screen adaptions altered it so strongly)!
#get ready for tag thoughts because there are a LOT of them#it’s for THIS reason that fanon wwx bothers me so much (didn’t want to get negative on the acual post)#bc so often all the changes are changes that woobify him!#self-sacrificial idiot wwx?? only doing things because
 poor him he has so many internal issues and values himself so little-#-so of course he’d sacrifice everything before thinking of another option? woobifying#(whenever he sacrifices something it’s a deliberate choice to act on his morals because he values his morals so much – and he’s also very-#-capable and DOES often find ways for no people to get hurt!)#wasn’t aware that what happened to him at lotus pier was wrong and needs lwj to tell him that for him to have any idea if it?#woobifying (as we see in the lotus seed pod extra he KNOWS it’s unfair)#(he downplays it retroactively in his memory (links into not focusing on the bad things in his life))#(but that’s the actions themselves that are being downplayed not their fairness!)#he chooses to act! he is defined by acting! not tragedy – all the more impressive in the face of the amount of tragedy that’s happened#he could SO EASILY have been a woobie but instead he’s the opposite of one: defined BY his agency instead of the absence of it#that doesn’t mean he’s not impacted by tragedy or trauma – he is! but it’s not the most important aspect of his character (bc he doesn’t le#it’s also something that bothers me about the changes cql made#by making qq path and nightless city the fault of someone else it means he IS someone who’s more a victim of circumstance than anything els#he had no control over the tragedies of his first life at all#apart from ig his death being controlled by him? because he just leaps off the cliff during the nightless city siege?? but in THAT case it’#i watched that part recently (i’m getting through it very slowly) and yeah it reaffirmed my love for this aspect of the book even more#despite. having these exact thoughts for two years already#he also dwells on the past events a lot more than book wwx which adds to that version of him BEING defined more by tragedy rather than who#anyway over 7.3k words total (and 400 more in the tags apparently)... it'll be posted to ao3 in its completion this evening!#mdzs meta#my meta#wei wuxian#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#é”é“ç„–ćžˆ#grandmaster of demonic cultivation#gdc

i am So Well about your kuon/hoeru stuff thank u for the food . do u have any........ headcanons or additions to their relationship , im curious to hear . we are such a small group of freaks (positive)
ahaha sorry when you said a small group I just imagined a group gathering at tea time talking about favorite brocon fics/HCs/happenings with one another. Does such commune of freaks exist in the toku fandom T_T)? If so let me iiiiiiiin *rattling cage bars*
Anyway,
Thank you thank youuu anon for enjoying my food!! This is my first sentai rodeo so im always worried about not drawing/depicting/characterizing/whatever-ing them so you and anyone else enjoying my gozyu stuff means a lot to meeeee T_T
Now i say that but um.. So all of these are exaggerated well enough to cater to my gozyu brocon needs LMAO so if its OOC..... i bow deeply to say sowwy
Tumblr media
(thoughts, words, stuff below read more)
+ they're codependent. Back then, and even now (but Hoeru's growing out of it. Kuon isn't) idk what their home life is like to make them be like that tho so uhm *insert bullshit reason*
+ they have a skewed sense of what's normal/appropriate between brothers. Probably weren't reprimanded/corrected as kids so they just kept doing it. What's sweet as kids is kinda weird now as adults~ idk something like having no sense of personal space or boundaries.
I like this one cz i can just imagine hoeru sharing smth he did with kuon to the gozyu team and everyone's just in shock with their kind of brotherly love mmcmfmd
Very delusional scenario but if they still got along after reuniting as adults, they'd probably take baths together ❀ Though hoeru's starting to mature so he'd probably say smth like how this is smth they shouldn't be doing but kuon coerces him to stay in the bath longer with him anyway~
Sorry really vague and no concrete examples (can't think of one for brothers-to-brothers, only for sisters-to-sisters mfmfmd) but you get my point right đŸ„č?
+ Kuon's feelings, worries, and thoughts abt his brother were warped to be super intense after the No One World abduction
examples:
- that thing where older siblings feel a little sad when they notice how much their younger sib is growing and starting to want to be independent -> warping to -> Kuon not wanting Hoeru to leave him AT ALL
- that familial love for your sibling -> sick kind of love and obsession for hoeru. ("Hoeru's my love, my hope, my puppet" uhm! Ok!! Whatever you say Mr. Freaky!)
- Younger siblings being your responsibility. You're their teacher, their second parent, their most available guide (eldest child in an Asian household things ❀) -> Hoeru grew up to have beliefs that dont align with Kuon's. Kuon thinks he is misguided and wrong. He's the only one that can set him right.
+ As kids, Kuon's praises and sweet touches would be like liquid gold to hoeru. Even if they have a weird relationship now, I'm pretty sure if Kuon praised him, Hoeru would feel like putty inside. It's hard to break off from old wants đŸ«¶
+ not an HC but do you know the whole thing the mom and daughter in EEAAO had? The daughter in the "Alpha universe" was pushed to the limit to be excellent that she became a nihilist and wants to destroy the universe. She seeks out for her mom in this one universe who is awful at everything because she has the greatest potential (the whole "you suck so much that you have nowhere to go but up" thing) and is the only one capable of foiling her universe-ending plans.
The womanfailure mom = Hoeru
The powerful nihilist daughter = Kuon
Do you see the vision? Mfmfmfmfmdmd
~~~
This got long sorry!!! I hope you got what you asked from me Anon Q_Q it's probably unoriginal lbr pretty sure some other 5head fan already said these things about the tono brothers in like, a more comprehensible way ahahzhshzhs but still thank you for reading up to this point u_u lemme know what you think! If you got some HCs share em!
I’m someone who does consider a lot of the Cut Saga as canon unless it’s inherently contradictory, so I take a lot of the dynamics and concepts introduced in those songs and keep them.
But I think ‘In Vain’ is the one I consider the most canon. Like 600 Strike hits so different with that song (the way he outright mocks Odysseus, which leads into Odysseus doing the same thing when he’s stabbing him is just SO GOOD) and it adds to Poseidon’s character in such a way that you’ll have to pry it from my cold dead hands fr
It just adds a lot to their dynamic as a whole, I think, giving Poseidon more than just implications to his motivation and giving an extra layer of anger to them both. I do somewhat understand why Get in the Water was the preferred version and the one that made it to the end, but I do think this is one of the few times where I do prefer the cut song over the official one. The climax of Poseidon and Odysseus feels so much more satisfying with it idk
BIG SPOILERS FOR PART 52. I talk about Lillith đŸ«¶ (and kind of Arthur)
Tumblr media
I had this meme I forgot to post and 😭 Oh my god. That aged. No like Lillith getting killed off or immediately defeated after being set up for so long has always been just a fear of mine but i think over time i kinda of just went "Well, obviously he wouldnt do that. He knows better. Obviously he wouldnt actually kill off the most relevant and important female character for the sake of a parallel between two male characters" And uh. TBH. ID BE LYING IF I SAID ANY EXCITEMENT AND HYPE I FELT TOWARDS THE FINALE KIND OF GOT SHOT DOWN IMMEDIATELY WHEN SHE DIED. like. I literally just got so annoyed and upset. Like I basically embodied this image:
Tumblr media
And I'll probably have to re-listen to that chunk immediately after her death because, like. I don't wanna say I checked out but I was pretty fucking angry at the writing that it was the main thing on mind and I honestly considered just dropping the podcast straight up (it was. BAD). AND THEN ARTHUR DIED. And I was like, "OH! NEVERMIND THERE'S HOPE. OH THANK FUCKIMG GOD🎉🎉". HAVE NEVER FELT MORE RELIEF IN MY WHOLE LIFE 😭 LIKE THERE'S NO WAY HE'S NOT COMING BACK AND IF HE DIED AND HE'S COMING BACK. THAT MEANS SHE MIGHT COME BACK TOO. Also, like. The dark world is where all dead things go to right? SO WE'LL PROBABLY SEE BOTH OF THEM AGAIN. GOD IM SO FUCKING HAPPY. Sorry I've just gone through a roller-coaster of emotions. I have my issues with some writing choices but I'm willing to put some trust in Harlan that. Surely she'll come back. And then idk maybe next season her and Arthur team up to find John idk and they defeat Kayne together idk . Also I do remember in the season 4 QnA, him saying the Scratch stuff was more "season 6 territory" soo
I have a little piece so far
AAAAAAAAUGH EXPLODES!!!!
also i've been thinking about that series of drawings you made of henry being kissed and reacting to it... like there's all the henry angst there of course but oh my goddd the dalston angst? he kisses henry only for henry to seem repulsed by it?? oh that would break his heart... i'm sure you've thought about that yourself though
#melonposting#ask#also yes i love when anybody (including myself) makes henry feel kinda bad for feeling something like fear/nervousness#like 'oh i shouldn't feel that way! this person has been so nice to me!'#a habit partly stemming from his desire to prove his gratefulness for the kindness he receives (but doesn't think himself worthy of)#i also think there's something with him finding it difficult to reconcile his overall opinion of someone#with the way they're making him feel in the moment#(in the case that they should contrast)#like in randall's case he likes randall. he could never not like randall#so when he's scared by randall he thinks that's an incongruity. like no if i like randall i shouldn't be scared by him. that isn't right#but as he favors his general positive impression of randall over his momentary negative reaction he reprimands himself for the latter#meanwhile if his positive impression of a person is more tenuous he's more likely to let a moment's negativity color the whole relationship#which i feel was the case with dalston for a while#as i've said before he read dalston's initial frustration with him as anger and hatred and reprimand#and so as henry wasn't nearly as close with him as he was with randall he let the fear he then felt 'revoke' any closeness he'd felt#and it's probably similar to the reverse of the randall situation#where any closeness he did feel he's get upset at himself for feeling. because he feels he's falsely claiming it#sorry this is all largely irrelevant and tangential :'D once i start talking about henry i can't stop
Genuinely so happy to see that Totodile made it into ZA! I haven't really consolidated my thoughts on the trailer yet (I feel like I still have more questions than answers about what the plot itself even is beyond 'make the city better' tbh?), but Totodile is there and Absol is there and that is genuinely enough to keep me excited
#random thoughts here! I won't be a killjoy- I am excited- but i might mention stuff I'm a little *???* on#but this isn't going to be some super negative thing because I am excited about it :)#omfg and my sibling is one of those people who just cinemasins the shit out of everything and I love them but I'm not gonna do that#ok. so. first off. I was really surprised to see that it was current day and not past or future but I'm not disappointed. just surprised!#I am really excited to see Lumiose so fleshed out!!! My only worry is that it'll feel repetitive to explore since there's *seemingly* littl#-variety in the overall ecosystem. you've got the little park areas but that's. yk. not all that visually different it seems.#and I loooove exploring new areas in games. it's my favorite thing so that's my main hesitation/what's keeping me a little unsure#BUT-#it looks like they really took their time with making Lumiose as big and truly city-like as they could and I'm psyched for it!#I hope different parts of the city have different vibes to make up for the same-iness of the game only taking place in one area.#supposedly. it is confirmed to only be set in lumiose and no other in game areas right??? no routes or anything?#I'm also excited for the new battling mechanic. I wonder how pokemon speed and size factors into hitboxes and such with dodging???#my mind also always goes to accessibility and i do hope that it's not *too* reliant on reaction-speed dodging.#I like turn-based stuff because it's easier on bad nerve pain days#but I can't imagine they're going to go. like. skyrim or botw with it where you *need* a certain level of coordination.#like as long as it's no worse than PLA's noble pokemon fights (minus the goddamn electrode one) then it should be fine#and I cannot imagine it would be harder than that or that battles would solely RELY on dodging.#like. sorry to the people who think pokemon's too easy but idk. if I wanted to play dark souls then i'd play dark souls.#but moving on from that because it's probably a non-issue:#the graphics are amazing. I'm so impressed with how good it looks- esp side by side with SV!!!#and look. is sv a little rough here and there? yes BUT I think it looked REALLY GOOD OVERALL.#so i'm super excited that this looks way better!
It's funny how even in my past lives (that I can recall) the people that I've loved I've never really loved in a romantic way, with a few exceptions. It's most often a deep bond, but not romantic. Maybe I've always been this way
also i like the prime broadcasts positivity about the leafs... it's been sorely lacking... but they don't know leafs puck very well, it's kinda funny
#like they get the features for sure and its fun to have ppl included but#the way it feels like theyre shoehorned into talking abt certain aspects or players at certain times is so interesting.#makes me wonder what theyre doing as prep beforehand lol#ik the prime is Home Team oriented so like thats the focus but fklsdj#hearing them tlak abt mitch defensively last night was so funny like yeah maybe if uve watched him only under berube ud come to those#conclusions but fldjsklf... hes been defensively with it in a BIG way for this team for years#having a segment post game abt willy who did. next to nothing most of the game. like it felt preplanned to do that idk. it was all just#weirdly stilted and novice#ill take it over sn/tsn buying into eveyr negative talking point there is BUT. why cant we get a real homer broadcast lol#also them not being able to get auston for the interview despite saying it was him on the rundown of intermission like ? hm.#was funny tho that we sucked so bad they kept havng to just show the first goal as like the only positive there for a bit.. thank u stolie#idk im impressed with the access but unimpressed with the knowledge of the commentary even tho its complimentary lol#'mitch is so smart' and then not going into why#or 'they have great chemistry' like was it THAT or was it actually a huge defensive gaffe by chicago that lead to a goal#wheers the HOCKEY TALK.. its just so funny lkJFKDLS i miss mike johnson sorry#give me some insight... also the play by play isnt great
Atla live action 😐
#thats my honest reaction 😐#to be fair ive only seen 20 minutes of the s1 finale bc my parents are watching it but. mmmmm kinda mid#like. the casting is definitely an improvement since the last time they tried a live action but it feels like the writing falls flat#or maybe im being harsh bc ive only heard negative criticism on it beforehand. but fr anytime u bring up the original its already#good and not just because its the original. so much fucking detail went into it to the point of someone noticing azula wielding mai's knive#to how well thought out irohs character is used as a way of uniting the cast especially as zukos foil#i heard that sokkas sexism was toned down and i have to agree that feels like a cheap move. like i get WHY they think it would be better#but its not about how that reflects on real world its about how it affects the story. sokka starts out as a misogynistic asshole because#it makes it that much more impactful when he changes. toning that down makes it flatter and makes his character development weak#and someone pointed out they didnt even make him wear the kyoshi warrior uniform and i know it feels like such a small detail but#come on man. they did that in the original because not only does it help him really walk in their shoes - wearing 'feminine' clothing and#makeup and having suki explain its significance but it also ties in with the shows theme of harmony and intersectionality#i was also disappointed when they had the fire sages explain how the water tribe draws power from the moon because in the original it was#IROH who explained it to aang and everyone else BECAUSE we as the audience is under the impression hes with the 'bad guys'#and it builds up to how he learned from the other nations which reconciles his past as a war general and his character overall#AND its an excellent starting point for the cast and audience to understand how the nations arent as closed off as you would think#plus you would think its only fire nation doing propaganda but they expanded on that with earth kingdom censorship and it WORKS#a lot of things in the live action also feel arbitrary like. they gave momo a near death experience for 5 minutes for no reason#im firmly on the stance of bringing back filler moments instead of putting major events right after each other so that u give your#audience a sense of time passing and to really absorb the story. but i think thats more like shock value than filler and yeah its a small#thing to gripe about but those things build up and its really annoying. the thing abt avatar filler moments is that however small#its at least meaningful. hell even the beach episode emphasizes how isolated zuko and his friends are as child soldiers#i also swore to never watch the first live action since it was that bad but i really liked the stylized tattoos they used for aang#anyway. those arejust my thoughts. im not gonna watch the rest because im a ride or die for the original aftr growing up and#rewatching it at least 20 times as a kid. but theres definitely room for improvement and i wish ppl wouldnt take it as 'better' just cuz#netflix is adapting it. i wouldve killed for them to just reanimate the entire avatar series and touch NOTHING ELSE no redub#no changes to the story. just reanimate the thing and leave the rest alone and youd make easy money just the same#ALSO its very jarring not hearing jack desena and dante basco voicing sokka and zuko cause their voices were the most recognizable to me#i get that its because its live action but im allowed to feel a little sad abt that. and uncle irohs accent was really soothing#yapping
If people could stop making massive, largely baseless assumptions about DAV based on a playtest build that only contains six hours of the game and that we haven't even seen all of that'd be great.
Modern au:
So Dorian has this chair, which he has grown to hate.
It's a very comfortable spacious chair. It reclines with a press of a button and has many uses: for work, reading, sex, relaxation, and a lot more.
At nights when he's busy with dinner and Manon is finishing up work, she sometimes uses the chair. (un)fortunately, because she's oh-so exhausted and still tries to squeeze in work, she ends up falling asleep.
This is where Dorian is torn. On one hand, he wants her to rest and if she's sleeping then that's good. On the other hand, he doesn't want her to go to sleep without food. Also, he doesn't want her to sleep there, no matter how big and comfy the chair is. But also, Manon is a light sleeper and she will wake up if he carries her to bed which might disrupt her sleep later at night.
Decisions decisions, he eventually settles on waking her, because it is still early and if she goes to sleep now she will be awake by two or three in the morning which is not good. He can push their bedtime an hour or two later than usual which is a better solution.
#booklr#books and reading#throne of glass#manon blackbeak#tog#dorian havilliard#manon x dorian#manorian#Dorian wants all the things that are simultaneously happening and he doesn’t know what to do#ideally he wants her to work less so that she’s not so exhausted#another thing he can do is ask her to not work at home at all and have her around in the kitchen#they can use the time to chat and catch up instead#but Manon doesn’t give herself any rest she feels that if she rests she will fall behind and her grandmother will not be impressed#honestly the woman is never impressed so why is Manon still trying???#she’s just wired this way and it’s hard to break from it#she’s never good enough and anything she does anyone can do way better#everyone else can do a much better job than her and she hold on to these thoughts#it’s this feeling of never being good enough that drives her#she’s not kind on herself at all#she hangs on every little mistake and stop at it#she’s literally crippled by those thoughts and it doesn’t help that she hears all this negativity often#this is why Dorian wants their evenings to be work free and for them to enjoy each other’s company#he wants to spend this time doing the opposite of what her grandmother does#focus on the positive and remind her of how good she is#he literally celebrates every little accomplishment#because everything she does is great in his eyes#so he needs to focus on that and try to counter the blackbeak matron#he hates her but also knows that she’s important to Manon so he can’t do or say anything about it
