A little over a month ago, we found out that the family with whom we currently share a sitter is moving away sometime this summer. Shortly afterwards, I saw someone with a baby close in age to mine looking to share a sitter starting in September. I reached out to her to see if it would work, and it seemed like everything aligned. My impression was that we just needed to figure out whether we were going to keep using our current sitter (who I’m still kinda iffy about even though she’s very nice) or try to find someone else. So I told the other mother that I would talk to the sitter to see if she even wanted to continue, and then from there she could meet her and decide if she felt comfortable.

The family we currently share the sitter with had not yet told her that they were moving, but told me that I could do so. Which felt super awkward. So I kind of dragged my feet on having the conversation, and then things got really busy with Pesach prep, and then she wasn’t working for 2 weeks. Which, I admit I should’ve been more on top of things, but it didn’t seem like that much of a rush because we have months to sort this out. The other mother never reached out to check in but again, my impression was we’d agreed to share, and it was just figuring out who the sitter would be.

So it was very surprising to me when she posted someone’s contact in a whatsapp group we’re both in (not sure if she realized I’m in it, as it’s large and I’m pretty new to it) and asked if anyone knew her because “we’re thinking of doing a playgroup together and I want to know a little more about her.”

I replied to her privately and was basically like look, I’m sorry I didn’t have a chance to talk to my sitter yet, this is why, I know it’s been a while, so I do get it if you want to go with a different arrangement, but please just let me know what you’re thinking so I know whether I should still have the conversation with her at this point.

And she appears to just be ghosting me, because it’s been 2 days and nothing. 🙃

I just don’t get it. Like, I get wondering why I hadn’t gotten back to her yet about the conversation with the sitter after a while, but so then you just...ask for an update? You don’t just move on without telling me while meanwhile I’m thinking my fall plans for my child are set. And then, when I’m telling you it’s fine if you want to go a different route, why not just say that yes that’s what you’re doing?? Why leave me hanging like this?

Anyway, as if that weren’t enough, the babysitter told me today that the family we currently share with hasn’t actually told her, but she’s overheard some things and it’s clear that they’re moving this summer. And she asked me point-blank on the spot if we’re still going to need her. Which I get, because if not she probably wants as much of a head start as possible to find a new job, and that’s fair. But now I’m in this awkward position of...if Ghosting Lady is indeed out, I genuinely don’t know what we’re going to do! It’s possible we could locate another family to share with, it’s possible we might find some totally different childcare situation. I don’t know. And it’s just such bad timing that NOW is when she asks me. 🤦🏻‍♀️
