There is a very, very small chance, if you live in the States and deal with people from, say Oklahoma, Illinois, Texas, etc., you might hear of what are called "Mineral Rights". You might think "Oh, grandma just died, and so I just inherited a bunch of land." Before you, idk, start harassing family friends because you're convinced they're hiding the Truth™ from you, here is a short, convenient guide to mineral rights:

They are not rights to the land, they are rights to the minerals. Hence "Mineral Rights".

You only own what's beneath the surface and any income you get from the oil companies (derogatory). You cannot build a barn on top of it. You cannot sell it to anyone so that THEY can build a barn on top of it. Because you do not own the land. You own the rights to the minerals. The Mineral Rights, if you will.

You do not even always have the right to decide who drills, because, if you don't lease to anyone, they will often decide to pool you in with the neighboring plots, because they are *just that considerate*. (There is no universe where that mineral is not getting drilled.) Or "horizontal drilling" which means that they just take your oil while they're getting your neighbors'. Isn't that fun? Doesn't it make you want to chew glass?

Because the oil companies control the degree of oil drilling, measure the output, AND write the check, if you had any hopes and dreams of becoming a wealthy oil baron, good luck.

Also please make sure that you are actually on the trust that you are trying to get access to so that, idk, you don't harass family friends before you realize that your family member disinherited you a couple of years back, because that would be *really* embarrassing.
