I think 90% of my gripes with how modern anime looks comes down to flat color design/palettes.
Non-cohesive, washed-out color palettes can destroy lineart quality. I see this all the time when comparing an anime's lineart/layout to its colored/post-processed final product and it's heartbreaking. Compare this pre-color vs. final frame from Dungeon Meshi's OP.
So much sharpness and detail and weight gets washed out and flattened by 'meh' color design. I LOVE the flow and thickness and shadows in the fabrics on the left. The white against pastel really brings it out. Check out all the detail in their hair, the highlights in Rin's, the different hues to denote hair color, the blue tint in the clothes' shadows, and how all of that just gets... lost. It works, but it's not particularly good and does a disservice to the line-artist.
I'm using Dungeon Meshi as an example not because it's bad, I'm just especially disappointed because this is Studio Trigger we're talking about. The character animation is fantastic, but the color design is usually much more exciting. We're not seeing Trigger at their full potential, so I'm focusing on them.
Here's a very quick and messy color correct. Not meant to be taken seriously, just to provide comparison to see why colors can feel "washed out." Top is edit, bottom is original.
You can really see how desaturated and "white fluorescent lighting" the original color palettes are.
[Remember: the easiest way to make your colors more lively is to choose a warm or cool tint. From there, you can play around with bringing out complementary colors for a cohesive palette (I warmed Marcille's skintone and hair but made sure to bring out her deep blue clothes). Avoid using too many blend mode layers; hand-picking colors will really help you build your innate color sense and find a color style. Try using saturated colors in unexpected places! If you're coloring a night scene, try using deep blues or greens or magentas. You see these deep colors used all the time in older anime because they couldn't rely on a lightness scale to make colors darker, they had to use darker paints with specific hues. Don't overthink it, simpler is better!]
You ever just see people talk about the Percy Jackson books and know somewhere, deep in your heart, that none of these people have understood that this is a series made for middle schoolers. And that fandom will very frequently lie to them like, all the time. No, that character probably isn’t ooc, you’re just thinking of what the fandom turned them into. No, this book isn’t a horrible stain next to the others before it, literally all of them were like this. It’s Percy Jackson. It’s cheesy and occasionally makes a very questionable writing decision.
You gotta be in this for the long haul or jump ship my guys. Be cringe and free or be gone
Believe it or not I STILL have a hard time drawing Branch, as much as I love drawing him lmao. I always get intimidated before I start a project that involves him, idk why!! And this is why we practice and practice and practice
in honor of kakashis birthday i thought i might as well finally release my half finished mini concept of "inverse lost tower where baby kakashi comes to hang out with shippuden era team 7. Badly" because obviously baby kakashi seeing his older self have relationships and happiness that baby kks doesnt think he can or deserves to have pisses him off on such a fundamental level hes so filled with rage he barely knows what to do with himself. not to mention that adult kakashis general outward lackadaisical demeanor also makes him angry because how can they have gone through all the same things and yet he still doesnt take anything seriously etc etc u already know all this. regardless the issue more than anything else was that im not much of a writer so i could never get the words to feel right so it'll probably stay unfinished forever, but take these anyways
MRS. PIGGY HAS AN UGLY SWEATER! I REPEAT: MRS. PIGGY HAS AN UGLY SWEATER!
it's baggy in the wrong places and overall Not Very Good! but that's to be expected seeing as i've never crocheted a sweater before, let alone one for a stuffed animal (and i had to kinda bullshit the pattern, seeing as it was made for a more proportional/bigger aminal). i'm proud of it. she looks nice and cozy for the coming winter months
have you perhaps considered you might be autistic? (< im being genuine, im autistic and ive noticed a lot of my traits in you eg the really really not wanting things to change around)
i think its somewhat likely, i've been told online and offline multiple times it seems like it, but its not something i'd want diagnosed or confidently say 100% "hey i have this !" so instead i'm just like. hey im struggling saur much with these traits halp
Hate how in every thread where someone asks for challenge ideas for pz most answers are just 'make it as hard as possible'
I dont want to make a run with highest zombie and rarest loot settings, eternal winter, no guns or cars, take all negative traits or whatever! i want a goal other than just 'survive'
the problem isn't that it's too easy to survive, it's that i dont have a point to work towards and then it all feels sort of pointless...
I like challenges like 'get from one end of the map to the other' or 'collect all ingredients + the recipe magazine and make a pizza'
collecting all versions of certain items is also fun, as well as giving your character a backstory and goal and rp
if anyone has fun ideas for goals what to do in pz, feel free to leave them in the notes :*
does anyone remember the fairy tale where a girl has this magical gift given to her by a witch where every time she says a word, either a flower or a gold coin (depending on which version) falls from her mouth?
I've been looking for this one au where Len basically becomes a mad scientist and turns his friends into robots one by one for a while now, and I'm beginning to realize that I just read through your blog while half asleep a few months back and mixed together my memories of your flower hivemind and composite au
this is very funny to me. i'm absolutely honored this blog's posts were enough to evil-farming-game an entire vocaloid au into your memories 😂
i can give you this doodle; it's composite au but i'm sure it'd fit very well with this theoretical mad scientist len au lololl
sometimes my dad will make these autism jokes like about me and idk it juat rubs me the wrong way. not bcs hes allistic, my friend makes autism jokes all the time and its okay and its funny because i know that in the end she will at the very least try to be there for me when im having a bad day and shes done more to accomodate me than anyone ever in my life and i know i suck and im boring when im overstimulated and im a handful and i dont understand things everyone else understands, but she understands this and puts up with me at my worst so when she makes a silly joke about something autistic i do its funny and i laugh, because i know thats all it is, a joke. but my dad doesnt just get to mock me, infantilise me and use my autism against me and expect me to find it funny when he makes a joke because i know he sees autism in itself as a joke and he thinks im stupid and he means it more as a scornful comment, and even if he doesnt being ableist like on a daily basis kinda makes you lose the priviledge to joke around with your kid about their disability. 🙂👍
