Supreme Council of Ethnic Hellenes aka YSEE

An organization I avoid in my practice heres why.

YSEE claims to be the foremost organization for the Ancient Hellenic Religion

After 21 years (1997-2018) of continuous presence in the contemporary Greek society, with over 350 civic actions like protests or press releases, over 800 lectures, commemorations of ancient national historical events, public religious ceremonies, and many educational events, the Supreme Council of Ethnic Hellenes (YSEE) is the formal legal entity representing the historically continuous and since 2017 “legally known” Hellenic Ethnic Religion. The Supreme Council of Ethnic Hellenes has two chapters outside Greece, one in the United States since 2007 and one in Cyprus since 2014, and seeks to establish more in any country that has active Hellenic Ethnic presence.

YSEE is Greek and nothing but Greek to an unwelcoming and ahistorical fault. Based on their own words they expanded solely for the Greek diaspora. I would feel more welcomed in a Greek Orthodox Church, which are extremely diaspora centered, than a YSEE ritual ….. and I’m ethnically Greek. I just happen to be adopted therefore I am not “Hellene from Hellene," I don't have the necessary blood.

They are very focused on it being an ancestral ethnic religion, which it is to an extent. But YSEE twists that into exclusionism that simply does not make sense for any Greek religious tradition if you take even a passing glance at a history book.

A Hellenic Polytheist should respect Greek culture and remember they are not relics of history; but being ethnically Greek or knowing Greek politics is not a prerequisite for this religion. If you read the YSEE American Book…. it’s basically useless for a non-Greek.

Here are some ritual passages from their AMERICAN book.

Basic ritual: Lighting the altar flame:

With our nation reduce to cinders, ruined, and enslaved, and with the last Hellenic sacred altar flame long extinguished, a promise of national rising we give to Gods and Ancestors calling upon the goddess Hestia, we ignite the flame of our heart, the altar fire, wishing the Hellenes rebirth enlightenment and freedom.

Name giving ceremony

Hear us ancestral Gods, ethnic Gods of the Hellenes. True offspring of myself and my spouse, Hellene from Hellene / blood of our blood / soul of your souls. Blessed Gods, ethnic Gods of the Hellenes

Funeral Ritual

A hellene born of hellenes, venerated offspring of venerated parents, may you have a peaceful journey

Introduction

[YSEE,] without legal status rendered incapable to defend itself and its beliefs, practices, and sacred rituals. Under such circumstances, and in the interest of defending our religion from what we recognized as an organized attack […] we under took the publication of this book which aims to clarify with the Hellenic ethnic religion is.

Based on the intro it appears the book is a showcase of what their religion is—but NOT an invitation to practice. Despite how the rest of the book is stuctured.

As for being gay they use Zeus and Hera to justify homophobia; which I cannot begin to tell you how much it angered me:

On the ritualistic level though, since the marriage symbolizes the sacred union of two opposite elements (male-female, Zeus-Hera) for further “demeourgia” (creation, “birth”), we perform marriage rituals only between people of the opposite sex.

They claim to accept it otherwise:

I think I was clear enough: YSEE respects homosexuals, it does not deny membership to them, not even priesthood, and the same it respects people that may have other forms of sexual expression, YSEE does not examine the sexual orientation, we polytheists are friends and not enemies of the human sexuality like the monotheists are

But then use the slippery slope argument of all things:

If we change even once our ritualistic Tradition then there will be no Tradition (ritualistic, I repeat!) at all, because then we’ll have to perform marriage ritual also for a polygamist with 5 brides, also for a nudist couple that may want to be blessed nude, also for a BDSM couple that may want the one part collared, and so on.

Also should mention the ultra-conservative/"traditional" Societas Hellenica Antiquariorum won't marry gay people, infertile people, or people older than "child bearing years" to have a religious wedding. And anyone with a medical condition is disqualified from being a priest. But they don't have any outreach outside Greece so its kind of irrelevant to the post but I thought I'd mention it.

Last I checked reconstructionism, not just revivalism, supports bringing these traditions and rituals back to life but also into the 21st century.

Statements in their FAQ

On their Greek website (rather than YSEE USA) they have a hilariously incorrect statment about nations.

[Quick word info: Nation = distinct group of people, nearly synonymous with "ethnicity" but it isn't always; such things can get very nuanced. The French people are a nation. The French have a “Nation State,"— France. There are other nations within France like the Bretons. Thats why "Stateless Nation” is a term, the Kurdish people are a nation but Kurdistan does not exist, hence they are stateless]

YSEE's “Nation” statement:

It is always ancestral and ethnic. It can never be imposed from one nation to another. There is no tradition shared by more than one nation.

Like every word is wrong. I’m sorry have you not heard of Hellenistic times? This is insular and boarders on ethnic nationalistic ideas of exclusion. The Hittites Hurrians Sumerians Akkadians whatever other ANE "nation" you'd like to talk about shared plenty. As a Sumerian and Hellenic polytheist who also separately participates in other traditions—this is bullshit. The entirety of the ANE & Mediterranean history proves it. Sumerians effected Akkadians— Sumerian as sacred language. The Phrygians effected the Greeks— Rhea-Kybele. There are Roman era cultus of Isis, an Egyptian deity, in ancient London— what was that about not sharing? Literally “Greco-Roman Religion” and “Greco-Egyptian Religion” are historical traditions that transcend the modern concepts of a nation. How is this statement even said with any shred of seriousness.

Continuing with the ethnic emphasis:

FAQ: Can someone from a different nation embrace the Hellenic Ethnic Religion? Answer: Ethnic religions refer to specific nations and that is why they do not partake in proselytising. Just like in ancient times, however, they accept people from other nations who freely decide to let go of their own ethnic religion and adopt the religion of a different nation.

In other words, if a Japanese person wanted to “adopt” their concept of Hellenic Polytheism they would have to “let go” of Shinto. In their concept of Hellenic Polytheism also practicing Sumerian Polytheism is most likely offensive to them. Again its insular, you are a Hellene, or you give up your own ethnicity / nation to participate as if you are Hellene.

FAQ: What is your stance vis-a-vis the various political ideologies and their followers? Answer: All decent religions accept people who turn to them, regardless of their individual political, nutritional, sexual, aesthetic or other personal choices. That said, as a religion per se, we steer clear of all ideologies of modernity, especially those that constitute political forms of monotheism and infect humankind with absolute ideas of how to fix the world, threaten human freedom and either deny (internationalism) or misappropriate the concept of ethnos.

I will always say ethnicity and heritage is important, but these people truly take it to a straw man extreme “Internationalism (aka Globalism) denies ethnos!“ No, no it doesn’t.

I think "steer clear of modernity" in and of itself speaks volumes about the organization... in a negative way.

We are a purely ethnic religion, i.e. referring to a very specific ethnos. Under natural, free and normal conditions, that is if the Hellenic ethnos was not under foreign spiritual rule, all Hellenes would worship our ethnic Gods. Proselytising came exclusively out of anti-ethnic or non-ethnic, expansive and global religions.

Alexander the Great. Hellenistic Traditions. Did you not study what they did in Egypt? To the ancient Egyptian "ethnicity”? This literally denies that syncretized Gods existed. Alexander the Great literally replaced Zoroastrian traditions with Hellenic traditions during his conquests. I bet they won't complain about a major global religion such as Manichaeism which stretched from Rome to Persia to China— no they just need a reason to whine about "Abrahamic Religions"

I also love that apparently not following the ancient Greek religion = spiritual stagnation. And blatant theocracy! Even though ancient Greeks weaved religion and politics together literally all the time.

The way YSEE presents the religion certainly lends a helpful hand to anyone who wants to use "Greece is for Greeks go home" type rhetoric. They also present it in such a way that promotes religious disdain for other groups rather than acceptance or encouragement of a diverse society.

YSEE America has some of the main website’s FAQs but not all as far as I can tell.

I don’t care if you are “okay with everyone’s sexualities,” when you use my beloved Gods Hera and Zeus to say my marriage is religiously invalid and it means you might have to start marrying nude people wearing collars in a Hellenic Polytheist ritual, you’re a homophobic shit. Almost as bad as “Love the sinner hate the sin and gay marriage will lead to legal beastiality” Almost as bad, not quite, but it comes close.

Ancestors do not take a front and center place in the religion to the point where not having ancestors of that ethnicity would literally prevent something crucial in the tradition, as opposed to say, root work where it's necessary. Nor was Hellenic polytheism ever closed off completely, the entire ANE & Mediterranean was an open mixing melting pot of Gods and traditions.

FAQ: Why "Supreme"? Answer: Because, as the official entity representing the Hellenic Ethnic Religion, the Supreme Council of Ethnikoi Hellenes is its foremost administrative body

Do not support them, do not allow them to claim to be the authority of Hellenic Polytheism.

They aren't the only Greek organization for this religion! Don't let them fool you.

i’m back!

hi everyone!! hiatus is officially over!!

so a few new housekeeping notes!

i changed my name!

i mostly did this in accordance with my side blog (which i’ll be talking about more in a little bit) but i also hated the name for a while and i think this suits me just a little bit more! all my links have already been changed so if anything on my masterlist is broken/leads to nowhere please let me know!!

i also changed my tags! so anyone who has my old nsfw tag blocked might want to update that, altho it might not be an issue later on down the line, as you can see by my next heading

i’m highly considering stopping making nsfw content

i think this is the biggest change that might be coming to this blog tbh. i’ve been thinking about it A LOT and the discourse is super conflicting on what is right and what’s not right

as much as i love to write smut, and nobody has directly come after me for writing smut, i keep seeing opinions and takes that are starting to make me want to quit it altogether. like apparently as a minor there are legal implications for me writing smut? which??? idk how true that is but it’s enough to make me more wary

the discourse around aging people up is also conflicting and confusing and the last thing i want to do it be on the wrong side of how to interact and behave in fandom spaces, especially being so new

furthermore, people don’t really go feral on my blog? like people don’t interact with my nsfw content all that often so i feel like it’s just there idk. maybe i’ll split the content into two blogs, maybe i’ll just private all of it and become purely sfw, idk im still thinking about it but i’ll let you know when i come to that decision

i will not be as active as i previously was

i hate to be so frank but the tumblr writing community is dying. nobody gets the interaction or hype that they deserve and it’s a huge blow to a writer’s morale to write something and barely get recognition

it’s not selfish for writers to feel this way and for this reason i won’t be posting as often or as regularly as i did previously. when i finish all requests and i open them up again, you probably won’t be getting it as quickly as you’ve seen in the past.

school is also starting up for me and it’s a very important one (senior szn or whatever) so i’m gonna be super busy with college stuff and AP classes and all the fun stuff that comes with being on the verge of adulthood

this isn’t really a new thing, but i know there are at least two event requests that are in progress rn and one request for an orginal piece i wrote at the very beginning of my blog

i’ll tentatively open my requests up again really soon (probably with slots tbh) and we can move from there

i promise they’ll be done (one is already fully finished and formatted in my drafts), ive just been burnt out and really not feeling writing (hence the hiatus)

i’m making a sideblog!

yayyyy smth a little bit more lighthearted! i made a side blog! its callled @peachiimilquecoffee (see what i did there) and it’ll be a little bit more laid back, more behind the scenes, and maybe i’ll post more WIPs and sneak peeks there as well as the stuff that interests me so i don’t clog up your dash with random pointless stuff

i’m also probably gonna talk more about my original content, and post about my other interests. if you’re into that kinda thing just check my navi and it’ll be up sometime soon! i just finished setting up camp and getting my tags situated there and whatnot so come hang out!

when i started this blog, i didn’t think i would get this far or even meet so many other people that i enjoy interacting with and seeing! i do want to stay here for as long as the site will let me, and as long as i feel welcome.

like i said previously, the writing community on tumblr feels like it’s dying, and it’s hard to make fan content unless you have a shit ton of followers that interact with you every day (and honestly some big blogs are struggling with a lack of boundaries as well).

all this to say, it often feels like there’s no winning. this is a tentative comeback, and i really hope something will change soon and making writing as fun as it was in the beginning for me. the hiatus was good for me to reset and be more inclined to get back in the groove.

the issue of constructive criticism

(the issue being i wasn’t sure how to spell criticism) 

i’m going to open this blog post by saying, i love constructive criticism, like i love it. i find it really useful and i always need a second, or third, or whatever amount of opinions on my work because i second guess every second word i write. 

constructive criticism is GOOD and if you disagree then i’ll argue against that. 

so, why the hell is this titled “the issue of constructive criticism”, well it’s less to do with the criticism itself and more to do with my ability to take it in. 

this post will hopefully resonate with other writers out there and act as a call out post to y’all (starting with myself)

ive had a draft of a novel beta read by seven readers, i’ve taken a creative writing course in university where my work was read by the whole class and critiqued and very recently i’ve had the first chapter of my current WIP critiqued (the monsters we know - you can read it if u want) and i’ve found a pattern. 

each different person who has critiqued my work has had the same three major things to say. 

1 - i switch between past and present tense 

2 - repetition of words 

3 - grammar, mainly use of commas 

and the thing is i’m HIGHLY aware that these are the three MAJOR faults in my writing, yet whenever i sit down to write i never really take any notice and i fire on with no thought about it at all. this is a vicious cycle. and i think that other authors go through the exact same thing. people point things out, and for some reason or another, we acknowledge them and then we fail to actually fix them. 

i’ve been doing some thinking recently into WHY i’ve failed to fix these issues, and more importantly why i’ve failed to even actively try to fix them. and i’ve come up with two major reasons. 

the first: i started writing when i was twelve (i’m twenty now it’s been eight years). when i started writing i hadn’t a clue. and for the first four years or so i still didn’t have a clue, i didn’t know a thing about grammar or punctuation (even though english is my first language), but i still didn’t know. where to put commas and how to stick within one tense wasn’t something i’d ever been taught how to do. in real life i switch between past to present word use ALL the time, the english language is exceptionally fluid in that sense. so i started in the completely wrong boat and with absolutely no tools to get me out of the boat without drowning. 

so what’s one tip that every writer is told, if they’re ever going to improve. write and read. and that’s where the issue comes from. i wrote, hell i did. and i read, hell i did. but basically over the last eight years i have read the first two books of the shadowhunters series and the first five from the game of thrones series. everything else i’ve read in about eight years has been fanfiction. eight years of straight fanfiction. NOW that’s not anything against fanfiction writers, i love fanfiction, it is my favourite thing, but fanfiction isn’t professionally edited. it’s not done to a professional standard. there are probably countless grammar and structural issues and just so much like editorial wise wrong with it. but did i care? no these characters were my absolute babies i wasn’t going to not read because of some small grammar issue i can just completely look over. 

and in one sense that’s fine. 

but in the sense of a writer trying to improve herself, it’s not. i’m not reading polished, professional, edited work. i’m reading fanfiction. the stories and plots and characters are all generally at the same standard of a professionally published book but the grammar side of things probably isn’t. as that’s the only thing i was exposing my developing writer brain to, that’s what i knew. that’s what i learned. 

i exposed myself to not high standard work and that affected my own ability to write. i love fanfiction and i don’t think i’ll ever not love it. but i also have to recognise that it probably was detrimental on my own ability to write because i wasnt reading to the standard that you need to write to in order to be a professional writer. 

the second: up until very recently actually publishing a book has been a pipe dream (until i sat myself down and decided, fuck it, i’m going to do it, fuck everything else) so writing has, for the last eight years, been entirely a personal thing. it’s a hobby. it’s something i don’t need to perfect. 

so when i fly in to work on my current wip, i write like i always have, as if i’m the only person who is going to see it and as if it’s never going to be published. but that’s not true. i post it online for people to read, yet i don’t write it to a standard that i think is good enough for other people. because i’m lazy, because it’s just for fun. 

and yes, writing will always be for fun. but i’ve got to take control of my writing and step it up if i ever plan on actually do anything with it. 

i also acknowledge that i can’t hide behind these excuses. i have to own up to them. i have to realize that it is my fault that i’ve got these bad habits and it’s my fault that i haven’t fixed them. 

NOW i don’t want this entire post to be me ranting about my own issues. i want to hear from other writers. i want to know if they know what their biggest flaw is, if they know why it exists and how (if they are) they’re going to fix it.

Recolors are really easy to do, there are tons of tutorials on YouTube that will help with that. Ombre accessories are a bit challenging but hopefully I can get a tutorial for those out one day. Converting to kids is really simple if you know Blender basics, you can use my converting to adults tutorial to get an idea of how a conversion would work.

REMOVE DOUBLES!!!! lmao that is the only way you will get anything done in edit mode. Proportional Edit Tool and Removing doubles from the entire mesh makes it a lot easier than sculpt mode. Make sure to split edges later though

The Rewrite Chronicles #1

Earlier this month, I began the much needed rewrite of my first book, Saving Emblem City, which is book one in The Stacey Williams Chronicles, which is my YA fantasy trilogy. (I’m very aware that I talk about it a lot on this blog, but I honestly can’t help myself. I love talking about my books and various other writing projects! Talking about writing is the primary focus of my blog. I decided to create a blog talking about writing because I wanted to. I wanted a place where I can talk about my true passion in life, which is where this blog came to be, 2-3 years ago). On this blog, I want to cover various topics relating to writing, from my perspective on writing advice, to chronicling various aspects of my writing process, to expressing the struggles that come with being a writer. This is what I want this blog to be, and that’s what I’m going to make it. I want to talk about what matters to me, and I’m going to do so.

One aspect of the writing process that I really want to cover is rewriting. As the saying goes, writing really is all about rewriting, and I feel like chronicling that with all of you, which is why I’ve decided to write updates, talking about my rewriting process, as I rewrite Saving Emblem City. (I feel like this aspect of the writing process isn’t being talked about enough, and with that, I’m choosing to document my experiences with it here on my blog).

PART ONE-MY THOUGHTS ON STARTING OVER:

Starting over isn’t easy, but sometimes it’s necessary. As of a few months ago, I knew that I needed to start over, and that doing so (in my opinion) was what I needed to do, and would be my next plan of action. During the summer, as I began brainstorming a plan for how I wanted to revise each of the books in The Stacey Williams Chronicles, I knew that rewriting book one would be the way I’d approach revisions for it. The moment came when I was reflecting on all the changes I wanted to make within the original story, and as new elements for a rewrite started forming in my head. While I am still using some of the bare bones from the original story, I’m also adding new things to incorporate in this new draft that weren’t in the original. Plus, one other reason I want to do the rewrite is because I’ve noticed problems within the original that I want to change and expand upon that I didn’t do the first time. (I’m not bashing myself for this at all, by the way. I’m just pointing out all the things I’m realizing now. I will say, though, while I am proud of myself for the fact that I wrote and managed to publish this book, I’m also bothered by it at the same time, because of the fact that the original is out there in the world, when I have all these changes I’m making in this new draft. One of the main things I want to do with this rewrite is make it A LOT better then the original was. I’ve honestly learned so much since that time, and my growth as a writer is much better now). The point is, though, having to start over doesn’t hurt me. In fact, I’m energized by this rewrite, and I’m glad I’m deciding to do it.

PART TWO-MY PROGRESS SO FAR:

 Although I started the SEC rewrite not to long ago, I’m not very far into the rewrite, and I am more than ok with that.  Last night, I finish writing chapter 2, which is titled The Holographic Knight,  and  I plan to start writing chapter 3-THE MAGICAL BOAT-within the next few days or so. To be honest, I’m not in much of a rush to get it done. With this rewrite, my main goal is to take as much time as I need with it, and not stress over it.  I’m not even going to worry about the fact that this rewrite is a first draft.  I just want to enjoy every moment of the writing process behind it, and fix any changes to the draft later, in the revision phase.

PART THREE-THE MUSIC IVE BEEN LISTENING TO DURING THIS REWRITE:

This is something, that, in my previous posts, I don’t talk about much, but would like to as well.  Music has always played a huge role throughout my life, and also just so happens to be an Integral part in my writing process.  Music is one of the main ways I fuel myself during a writing session. It allows me to get into the writing zone, and I perfer having it when I work. While I can write in silence, I like listening to music while I write even more. There’s something about music that just does it for me. I’ve discovered that music can open me up creatively, and help inspire me to write, and is one of my writing triggers. I’m a big fan of the moments where I can just drown out the world with music, write to my heart’s content, by allowing my imagination to grip hold of me. With that being said, I can listen to music with and without lyrics. (However, I can occasionally get distracted when it comes to music with words, but that doesn’t happen too often). Lately, I’ve been primarily listening to instrumental music, during this rewrite. I’ve been really loving the music of an independent composer from Australia named Peter Gundry. I personally think his music is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. He’s a composer of mostly dark fantasy, Celtic, vampric, orchestral, and emotional music, and I genuinely can’t get enough of his work! His pieces are very immersive, which I absolutely love. Alongside Peter Gundry, though, another artist I tend to listen to a lot during a writing session is Ellie Goulding. Music is something that’s really special to me, and as a writer, I don’t know where I’d be without it.

PART FOUR-CONCLUSION:

All of what I’ve previously mentioned pretty much sums up the first post for The Rewrite Chronicles. Despite the fact that this post is a bit on the long side, I hope those of you reading have enjoyed the post. Feel free to stick around for more updates on my rewriting process, if it’s something that interests you. Once the rewrite is done, (depending on how long it takes me to complete) I’m considering writing a post on the differences between the rewrite of Saving Emblem City, and the original version. (We’ll see if I actually stick to that promise). Until then, I hope this post was interesting enough, and I should have another one up soon.
