It was Jace's words that really doomed all the Rat Grinders. Now they get to be like Dayne and Penelope, unimportant and unceremoniously murdered. Antagonists with little screen time. Easy for the Bad Kids to hate, impossible to pity.

If Jace hadn't said that, they might have been Like Aelwyn and Ragh. Constant thorns in the Bad Kids' sides, there for so long that it would stop hurting. For so long that the Bad Kids would actually want to understand why they were there, and get invested.

jace had been waiting for the deluca siblings so the three could have dinner. he had nibbled through the crackers he kept as a "just-in-case" snack. "hope you guys got what you needed to done," he referenced the rehearsal carson spoke of. the son of mercury was typically one to take people at their word, preferring benefit of the doubt over cynicism.

"i'm thinking either waffle house or a 'n' w. either of those sound good to you guys?" jace asked. breakfast for dinner or a classic burger joint. both were good options.

People were just talking about the fact that Rhaenyra doesn't care to dismantle the system she's the exception to, she simply cares to be the exception. (@bohemian-nights )

That is a genuine part of her character, both in the books and show. However, the scenes people use to deter it is her bringing Rhaena and Baela to the council table in episode 10, but I don't think that's fair.

These scenes don't exist outside of each other.

Rhaenyra offers them a place at the council table where they don't speak. They don't contribute, and they don't fight for themselves to add to the conversations.

This is a day or two after they are betrothed like she was in a political marriage where they have the pressure of having 'true born heirs' with Jace and Luke to rectify everyone's mistake.

Something they never contribute to with opinions or thoughts outside of smiles in the narrative and audio found by fans not casual viewers.

It's not a meaningful parallel because we see Rhaena's face fall when Jace says send us, but we never have her counter it

We see Baela smile but never in the show ask to join the fight.

It's not a good thing to reduce characters this much. ASOIAF is built on its characters, and it's almost cruel to deny these girls a voice to facilitate a narrative that does not draw a true parallel.

Imagine Baela saying send us and Jace then correcting her because of Corlys and Rhaenys' recitation to sacrifice their girls to the war.

Rhaena disagrees with the idea, but Luke is trying to come in as the future Lord of Driftmark agreeing with Jace and Baela.

That adds to the dynamic during the fight, adds to the grief for the girls, Jace and eventually Corlys and Rhaenyra.

So the call back falls flat because the girls aren't established characters like Rhaenyra was, we see Rhaenyra having these conversations with her son instead of her step daughters which would've been a cool parallel to her and Alicent as well as her at the council and overall the future feels likeen and their agreeable wives. Actually, Laena's impact years later.

But I care about character dynamics.

Not to go on a whole Jace Stardiamond thing again and I know I’ve said something very similar before but I literally don’t know why people take Jace’s statement that the sorcerers sit around and talk about how great having innate magic is at face value when

1) we know he’s keeping at least one pretty big secret so honestly any of his responsibilities at this point are his word vs. what the bad kids perceive

2) even if we take it as a given that Brennan seems pretty hard set on trying to convey that Jace’s life has always been easy, WHY would we assume that sorcery class is as easy as Jace makes it out to be when it’s a bunch of young people coping with innate powers they can’t control unless they have an understanding of themselves. We can say he’s a bad teacher who doesn’t actually teach his students all we want (and I think in some ways he probably is a flawed teacher) but if he was as disastrous and neglectful as people make out, why do we know so little abt what goes on in that class? If he was slacking off w the freshman there would be consequences. If he was a trainwreck I think it would be well known, there are probably kids with wild magic, imo there should be mishaps happening all the time and yet we get zip. There wouldn’t be such an air of mystery abt wtf sorcery class even is. Im not saying he’s a great teacher, I said this once before as a joke but “sitting around and talking about how great innate magic is” can mean very different things when approaching inexperienced 14 year olds vs a powerful and jaded 17 year old.

Like. Maybe I’m too close to the character to see things from an unbiased pov but the internal logic does not mesh for me. It doesn’t read to me the thing someone would say if they were overconfident in their ability as a teacher, it reads to me as undervaluing what he does as “it’s chill man. No big deal”

But the way I don't think I'd have had any interest in Jace if he got more characterization because... There's such a foul tone that circles him. Like.

I definitely do it as a dm but sometimes you drop a character in the universe you hate. And your characterization of them just becomes this extension of your derision for them.

And I think if that derision was expanded on Jace would have really been a character I'd just be so bored of.

But as it is he is just a collection of little ideas and HAS to complement the man who killed and remade him because what else is he. The dm doomed him.
