I actually liked this one less than the first one, even though it's much more popular. I also felt like they had a lot less budget than for the one before.

one of the things I really liked though, was that dr marcus was not a love interest and kirk even left saavik alone. I really love this new version of kirk (even though canonically he would've been with this antonia woman from generations at that time). it's almost as if one particular relationship made him rethink things…

there were some quite nice spirk-y scenes in the sense that they were very flirty the whole time imo, but in general not a lot of scenes between spock and kirk alone. but here are a few that were definitely something: spock giving kirk his birthday present and "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times - message, spock?". insert kirk smirk here. then in spocks quarters, his throaty "jim" that I cannot see in a friendship way since the turbolift scene in and the children shall lead anymore (even though it was much less throaty this time) and then saying "I have been and always shall be yours". and in both these scenes spock implicates that he regrets kirk took the promotion and went back to earth, which is also the reason they are not spending time together anymore. this can be interpreted as friends, but it wouldn't be me if I didn't see it in a different light. to me, they seem like two people who have broken up amicably a while ago (as opposed to the motion picture where they seemed like they had had a messy breakup). like they were just in different places in their lives but still don't want to close that door for good. spock also seems pretty open with his emotions in their private moments in this movie. and you know we love lowkey smirking spock :)) later spock's "be safe captain" - "yes WE will make sure to be safe". and of course kirk kicking several lower deckers away to get to dying spock. so in the end, there was quite a bit!

only the death scene was a bit lackluster to me. I know people love this scene, but somehow it didn't touch me like I thought it would. it felt like the actors knew spock was gonna return in the next movie and it was not too well written imo. it also makes no sense to me why saavik (a vulcan!) cried at spocks funeral but everyone else was pretty ok. I mean kirk choked back a few tears but in general his reaction was pretty tame. it would've been more kirk like (and to my liking) to smash everything. you know, like he did almost every time he lost a random woman he had just met... in general, I didn't fully understand why spock was sacrificing himself in the first place, in the sense that I have no idea what he actually did in the chamber.

to end on a positive note though, I enjoyed the concept as well as some scenes, to me it just could've been better executed as a whole.

So I rewatched The Deadly Years and this is Jim with his literal ex who’s still not over him… Excuse me, what are we supposed to think??? LOL

I should also add that she’s a scientist (like half of Jim’s ex girlfriends basically) and the reason they broke up was because of their different careers… And she literally brings up that she married her coworker when they were stationed in a lonely outpost and they were working together.

Maybe you should do the same, Jim? Just a suggestion. :)

Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, up to 2x9

So not a lot of people are talking about this (the state of trek fandom in 2023 is such a surprise to me, having lived through 2009 especially, but also the last decade of the 1900s), so IMMA TALK ABOUT IT. 

My one complaint about Strange New Worlds is that it is way too straight, but lol at me, my one very strong shippy feel is a straight pairing - let’s fucking go:

SO. THE USS ENTERPRISE SECURITY CHIEF LA’AN NOONIEN SINGH, DESCENDANT OF KHAN (from the <s>90s</i> 2020s) FELL IN LOVE WITH HER OWN EDITH KEELER IN TIME TRAVEL HIJINKS: A CAPTAIN KIRK FROM A DYSTOPIAN FUTURE WHERE HIS LIFE IS AWFUL <s>and spock hates him</s> AND HIS BROTHER IS DEAD. BUT HE IS STILL A GOOD MAN. SUCH. A GOOD. MAN. 

(and specifically, he’s such a good man in that HE COMES FROM A DARK TIMELINE, he’s from SPACE!, he’s never lived in Iowa! His brother is dead! And he could be mirror kirk but he isn’t! He’s a good honorable man shaped by different traumas, and he fell in love with her because she’s a great fish out of water, holy shit, GET THAT FISH OUT OF THE WATER)

and then romulan mary queen of scots from reign shoots this Kirk dead and the GOOFY TIME TRAVEL AGENCY FROM DS9 (The Department of Temporal Investigations) is like “lol la'annie, babes, you can’t tell a soul about this” and La’an, our poor dear traumatized tightly-wound perfectionist, can only weep into her pillow. 

but as the tweet by twitter user campy alien says: 

SO NOW SHE IS FACED CONSTANTLY WITH THE REAL JAMES TIBERIUS (tiberius? that’s the worst) KIRK and he’s not her kirk and he’s not anyone’s kirk (is he carol marcus’ kirk? ha ha not for long)

And it’s just buckets of angst (affectionate).

(re the title to this post: in the musical episode, she has a fantasy of smiling at her kirk under a white sheet in bed and WE KNOW THE TROPE, PARAMOUNT. THANKS FOR GIVING US, DEAD WIFE JAMES T KIRK. 13 out of 10, no notes.)

I think this would all be nonsense if it wasn’t for how Paul Wesley is playing Kirk (and the writers are writing Kirk) as this very GENTLE KIRK (Pine, Shatner; not defined by gentleness). He’s deeply charming and romantic and fun and yes full of himself and just a very gentle interested heroic person in the periphery of the current USS Enterprise. Makes sense that he would inherit the chair, makes sense that this Kirk would get cocky in a few years, makes sense this Kirk would fall in love with every woman he sees, <s>doesn’t yet make sense how this Kirk and this Spock would fall in love, that’s another post to make; also as your resident kirk x bones, i’m tapping my gd foot (slowly, i love m'benga!!)</s>. AND I LIKE THAT A LOT. (I live in a house divided, my wife hates him.)

Because there are knives in La’an under that tightly wound surface and there’s just a wonderful bruise there to press on. THIS KIRK IS NOT HER KIRK, AND WILL NEVER BE HER KIRK. HER KIRK IS DEAD AS IF HE NEVER EXISTED AT ALL. How do you process this and move on? Loved to see her tell Kirk about it (loved to see her christen him as Jim) and hope to see how this progresses. 

Final thought (for now): La’an being a new character with a Very Famous Name; where does she end up when a changed USS Enterprise goes on its five year mission (without a security chief apparently)?

Headcanon

Jim and Carol keep their (mostly long distance) relationship a secret from the rest of the crew (except for Uhura, Spock, and Bones) and Scotty gets the surprise of his life when there’s a commotion during Jim’s surprise party and he looks over to see Jim being kissed senseless by Dr. Marcus, who has been very worried about him and needed to express her deep relief at his continued existence. Spock sees it and inwardly sighs at the shamelessness of humans, while also kicking himself for his earlier decision to end things with Uhura and wondering if she would be receptive to a second attempt at courtship. Given the way she looks at him, he calculates the odds at 80.2%.

Bones mutters “Dammit, Jim. I did NOT need to see that!” under his breath and tries to distract the gawkers to give the two some privacy.

Jim is beside himself with joy and clings to Carol like a drowning man, trying to keep from bursting into tears at the onslaught of all the emotions of the last few days. He’s never seen anything more beautiful than her.

Carol caresses Jim’s battered face and tries to kiss the bruises better. She didn’t realize how much she missed him until he was almost taken from her.

“Do you like your birthday surprise?” She asks, buying time for him to regain his composure.

“I love it,” Jim says softly, bright blue eyes fixed on hers. “I love YOU, Carol. My one comfort through this all was knowing you were safe, at least.”

“You had me scared to death, love,” she replies. “One day you’ll run out of lives and then what do I do? No more dying, please, dear.”

“I wish I could promise that,” Jim sighs, looking down at her wistfully. “But you know how it is. Having you around more in the future might help,” he hints.

“We’ll see what we can do about that, darling,” Carol says, with a mysterious smile that Jim thinks bodes well for them.

2 cents: I don't even know. I started just to look at it and then somehow I couldn't stop. Two characters I find wholly irredeemable given back story enough to make me suspend disbelief just enough to enjoy the fic - now that's talent. Features background Finn/Rey and Luke/Wedge if you care about that, and generally has everyone written in a positive light except Snoke, including a surprising handful of of First Order refugees. It's weirdly not at all a dark fic, despite the premise and extreme levels of Force Ex Machina.

Team Amestris takes JKR's creation to school, with all the swearing you'd expect sprinkled throughout for ambiénce.

3:00 pm

He hurriedly paced back and forth the room. 

He would be married in an hour. 

To Carol Marcus.

Him. James Tiberius Kirk, the playboy. The man that had thought that he would never settle down, that would never find someone to spend the rest of his life with. Yet, here he was. 

With Carol Marcus.

3:45 pm

Just 15 more minutes and he’d be a married man. And Carol will be his wife.

15 minutes.

He was standing at the altar waiting for her to walk down the aisle. 

A commotion caught his attention. He snatched his gaze away from the aisle towards the first row in front of the altar. There she was talking and laughing at something Bones was telling her. Her smile was really beautiful but somehow, it seemed fake. Usually, when she smiled, truly smiled, her eyes would crinkle at the corners and her whole face would light up. 

This time, it wasn’t the case, and he knew that it was all because of him. 

Three years of running away from her, of avoiding his best friend. The one that truly knew him. He still remembered the day he first met her. 

22 years ago

Jim Kirk was playing in the front yard of his house in Riverside Iowa. His mother was on a mission in space and he was left behind with his abusive step-father, Frank. 

He didn’t like Frank. He acted all nice and fun when his mom, Winona, was on Earth. Jim was young but extremely smart for his age. He understood everything that happened around him. He knew that when Frank brought new women home, women that weren’t his mommy, and that they disappeared in the bedroom, that it was wrong. 

He hadn’t seen his mommy since his third birthday, now he was approaching his fourth. One year without his mommy, it was all the same to him. 

Jim was smart and a absolute “cutie”[A.N: I imagine Jim being a total lady killer since the second he was born], as would say one of the numerous women Frank had brought home. Unfortunately, his competitive personality and his smart-ass replies [A.N Yes Jim was always a smart ass.] led to him not having any friends. He fought with everyone. For the toy spaceships to the last colour crayon. He was his father’s son, after all.

Like everyday, he saw the nice ladies of the neighbourhood having their daily meeting at Mrs. Bradbury’s house. Everyday, the ladies would meet up at Mrs. Bradbury’s house and have tea and cookies while talking about the latest piece of neighbourhood gossip. Mr and Mrs. Bradbury lived next door to the Kirk household. Mrs. Bradbury was really nice, she gave him chocolate chip cookies whenever she saw him playing in the yard alone, she saw him as a son for lack of any of her own children. 

Although, today was different. Today, the ladies were talking about the new family moving in the house next to the Kirk household. The house where the late Mrs. Hudson lived in. She died and left everything to her son Greg and he had decided to sell the house. As it would seem, the new couple was moving in today. 

After that, the ladies started talking about Mr. and Mrs. Greenberry’s latest fight and Jim stopped paying attention, too lost in beating Klingons and Romulans. 

When noon rolled around, Jim saw a big moving truck parking in front of Mrs. Hudson’s house. Following the truck was a nice antique car that Jim couldn’t name, even if he tried. Out came a tall dark haired man and an average height brunette. 

“MOMMY!!! MOMMY?!?!“

The young couple sighed. The woman turned towards the car and began to walk towards it.

“MOMMY! I CAN”T GET OUT OF THIS SEAT BELT. I HAVE TO GO PEE PEE! MOMMY!!! “

“Y/N, I’m here. Stop squirming darling. Just- PETER. Get her out of this.“

The man sighed and followed his wife. 

The rest of the conversation was unheard to Jim. The couple had started mumbling to each other. Jim couldn’t stop watching. He was intrigued by the strangers that would become his new neighbours. 

The woman marched towards the main door to unlock it while the man worked on getting the little girl out of the car.

He watched in rapt fascination as the man took the girl in his arm and sprinted in the house, presumably to the bathroom. The woman sighed, shook her head but smiled fondly towards the man and the little girl. 

The smile was similar to the one his mother gave to his father in the countless pictures Jim had found hidden in the depths of his mom’s closet.

A couple of days had passed since the new family moved in. Jim was, once again, playing in the front yard. Alone. 

He was sitting on the grass with his action figures when he felt a shadow over him. He looked up and saw a very pretty girl standing over him, of course, at that time he thought girls were gross and so he rudely asked her what she wanted.

The girl, frightened, just looked at Jim with a deer caught in headlights look. 

“I’m- I’m sorry, I didn’t want to disturb you but my mommy wants me to talk to new people and make friends.“

Jim just looked at her, in suspicion. 

“Hi. My name is Y/N. We just moved here.“

Jim stayed silent.

The girl looked awkward. She was about to turn around and leave until she saw the figurines that Jim was playing with.

“OH! Are those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures? That’s so cool, I have some at home too, well I did until my mom lost them in the move…”

She had a small frown on her face and she was pouting. When Jim didn’t say anything, she turned around to leave.

“I’m Jim” he said suddenly.

She smiled.

That day, truly was different. For the first time in as long as Jim could remember, he had a friend. They spent the entire afternoon playing with Jim’s figurines. As days followed, Jim found himself with the greatest friend he could ever ask for. His best friend.

Present

And now, here he stood, watching the one woman that knew him better than he knew himself. The one woman that loved him, or at least loved him 3 years ago, laughing with another man. His other best friend, Leonard McCoy. As much as he hated to admit it, Bones had always had a crush on Y/N. He comforted her when Jim broke her heart. He became her new best friend. 

He watched in envy as his best friend made his other best friend laugh. The laugh she gave when he made stupid jokes. He watched as she stood in a beautiful blue dress that hugged her every curve and stole the attention of every man present at his wedding. He watched as her gaze would occasionally flickered over him but he pretended not to notice. 

He pretended to look away.

And then it was time. “Here comes the bride” started playing and Carol walked holding onto her father’s arm. She was wearing a beautiful wedding gown.

She looked beautiful. Yet, somehow, Jim’s gaze kept flickering to the woman in the blue dress. 

As his bride approached the altar, he heard a communicator beep. His gaze snapped to the woman in a blue dress. He saw her read something on the comm and rushing out in a panicked manner. 

He watched as she walked away without another glance in his direction. 

His heart thumped painfully in his chest. 

Carol finally reached the altar, they both smiled at each other. 

“Do you, Carol Marcus, take James Tiberius Kirk to be your lawfully wedded husband till death do you part?“

“I do.“

“Do you James Tiberius Kirk, take Carol Marcus to be your lawfully wedded wife, till death do you part?“

His heartbeat accelerated. His palms became moist with perspiration. He swallowed hard and forced a smile on his face. 

“I…”
