Not really a YA, obviously, but basically the only translated author out of Kyrgyzstan, this novella is said to be a beautiful love story.

Not much to say about this one. It was a quick read but the pace was good and the story enjoyable. I wish it had been longer and the characters more fleshed out.

Valley of Wolves

Word has finally reached Moonwood Mill about Helena being a hostage of the Straud family.

Everyone is very upset, especially Farkas who is having trouble containing his rage lately. Lucan insists on taking him to the Valley of Wolves with the rest of his family, to clear their minds and figure out what their next move is. It's a secluded underground lair for werewolves.

Lucan's oldest daughter, Arya, is staying behind to look after the mansion, and Lucan wants his sister Lucy to bring her family  to help Arya protect Moonwood Mill while he's away.

Lucy is very distraught though. She would usually be the first to attack, but this is her daughter...She also doesn't want Farkas to leave her, but this is the best thing for him at the moment. She reluctantly agrees and gathers her family to go stay at the old Wolfrik mansion, while Lucan and his family head to the countryside.

(The "Valley of Wolves" is by Jazmilia on the galley. It's BEAUTIFUL and anyone playing werewolves should check it out. I can't wait to play out my story there!!!)

Lucan is shocked to see his sister get sad instead of angry. She's always been a hot-head. "I'm taking Farkas with me." "Lucan...you had him for most of his life." Lucy sobs. "I know, Lucy. But there's a war starting. We need to come up with a plan. We can't attack when Helena is being held hostage. You trained him well, but now it's my turn again. Please, go see Arya. She'll need your help."

Lucy goes to her comfort person, Lou. He's ready to follow Lucy anywhere! They lock up the warehouse and head over to the Wolfrik mansion, where she lived when they first came to Moonwood Mill.

Farkas is so happy to see his Aunt Ivy. He was raised by her as a pup. Ivy is happy to see her little white wolf grow up to be such a strong man.

The gentle Queen Ekay

Ekay was a female individual who served as a queen of the planet Naboo at 44-40 BBY. She was familiar with Jedi Master Rael Averross and Senator Sheev Palpatine, who are presented as stone sculptures.

Unfortunately, that is all what is known about her. We do not know how she looked, what kind of dresses she wore or her age. On the painting she is presented in royal palace and has a costume, which belonged to other Naboo Queen and has scars of remembrance on her face.

Naboo royal crest behind her also represents her high status.

One of the things I think gets overlooked from the Star Wars movies is that the Clone War is connected throughout all of these movies, it’s not just Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but that everything starts on Naboo, with Palpatine and the Chancellorship, but also with the Trade Federation.  When the Separatists are threatening to leave, as Padme and Jamiilia and the other Naboo officials discuss it, it’s also brought up that it’s likely the Separatists will feel threatened and turn to the Trade Federation, of which Nute Gunray is still the viceroy of. And that’s the other thing that gets overlooked from The Phantom Menace, because we don’t directly see it on the screen, it’s only talked about by the characters: the Trade Federation was putting people into occupation camps and those people were starving and dying. When Obi-Wan discovers that Nute Gunray is indeed a part of the Separatists’ movement, it isn’t just about the Separatists wanting to leave, it’s about how the Trade Federation operates.  That the Jedi know they will do the exact same thing to other planets in this war that they did to Naboo. Which is 100% correct, because the chronologically earliest episodes are the ones where the Separatists are occupying Ryloth, where they’re using the Twi’leks as living shields, they’re bombing civilian villages, they’re looting treasures from the Twi’lek people. The Republic getting involved in this war isn’t just “we can’t let them leave”, it’s that when the Separatists leave, this is what they will do and all of us will be hurt, suffer, and die if we don’t stand up against it.  That’s why The Phantom Menace is so important, beyond the character stuff, because it sets the stage for the politics of the GFFA.  The Republic is far, far from perfect, they’re greedy and Senators often only care about themselves and the Republic becomes the Empire, but this war wasn’t started just for funsies, there’s a reason so many good characters are still part of it, there’s context that’s cleanly established in the movies. As Jamilia says in Attack of the Clones, “We must place our faith in the Republic. The day we stop believing in democracy is the day we lose it.”

If you're still taking alternate pov requests, I'd kill to see somebody's perspective on Senator Darsana, be it another senator, an aide or even someone like Dooku.

Okay, so this took me so long to put together because actually, there aren't a lot of people thinking about Darsana in ways that cross the plot interestingly. Besides Shea, I suppose, BUT! I have found a contender. My new favorite.

In the official social ranks of people that interacted with Mistress Leia, Senator Darsana sat high, but not so high as Queen Jamilia, or Senator and Prince Consort Organa, or even Senator Amidala who was once queen.

And Threepio really wished someone had told him that on Tatooine, because he'd been rude and naked in front of a ruling monarch and how he was managing to bear the shame and work side by side with the senator, in the Republic Senate no less, was anyone's guess.

She was so gracious to never bring it up. Threepio would love her forever for it.

But.

Of all Mistress Leia's friends, Senator Darsana was Threepio's favorite.

He was pristine and deliberate in his dress without being gauche. He eschewed, generally, the excitement that caused Threepio so much distress that Senator Amidala and Mistress Leia couldn't seem to help but jump into. Senator Darsana was urbane, aware, and so pinpoint in his every word and gesture. He knew his own culture so well and delivered insults freely, but with such an air and such careful subtlety that if Threepio had been organic he might have been left breathless.

The senator was polite to Threepio, respected Threepio as an official representative of Mistress Leia's, and was, on the occasions when they interacted, perfectly polite to Mistress Shmi.

All of these things were more than enough to earn him a place of favor in Threepio's eyes.

But beyond the social graces and the wisdom to avoid danger was something more. Something Threepio wasn't entirely sure Senator Darsana knew he was doing. Something Threepio knew Mistress Leia had missed because she never asked, and Threepio had never taught her to see.

The senator loved Mistress Leia.

Loved her in a way that Threepio knew and understood because it was etched, with loving care, into his base programming. Placed there by small hands that had brought Threepio to life and given him focus and purpose and pleasure in both.

Senator Darsana could not interfere with Mistress Leia's duties. But he watched, and learned, and assisted.

He made her smile. Really smile. Not the polite, brittle, sharp thing she used on enemies, or the limpid, vapid thing she brought up against truly dangerous foes.

No, Senator Darsana saw and protected who Mistress Leia truly was. He valued her. Encouraged her. Stood by her when others faltered. Had faith when others were full of doubt.

Acted, always with restraint, so that she might be free, but as safe as he could make her.

It was, perhaps, the sort of love no one other than Threepio could have understood, because it was as much a love born of duty as it was of choice. It could afford no recklessness, knew it must come second to Mistress Leia's needs and wants, and carried itself with quiet contentedness that disguised it's true depths.

But when Senator Darsana was the first to arrive and inquire after Mistress Leia, Threepio discreetly made sure the senator received, separately from Senator Amidala's information, all the details Threepio had about what had occurred.

Someone had to look out for Mistress Leia's best interests.
