Helen is attempting to tie him down and study his teeth because she's a dentist and all dentists turn into freaks when given a client with something rare or weird (at least in my personal experience). Bart suddenly understands why little kids cry all the time because this shit SUCKS. Carol has a goddamn heart attack when he casually pulls a tooth out of his face one day.

“The Hales are back,” Lydia says. 

“When?” Stiles asks. 

“Not sure. I think late last night?” 

Well, that explains a lot. 

“I’m going out,” he says, grabbing his jacket. 

“Stiles-” Lydia starts. 

“I’ll be okay,” he interrupts. “You don’t have to stick around. Go home and get some rest. We can work on this more tomorrow.” 

He doesn’t wait for an answer, just leaves and hops into his car. 

If he hadn’t known before that the Hales are back, he would have known once he got to the preserve. Everything has woken up. The tips of his fingers tingle with magical energy. He’ll have no problem doing any spell he wants to now. He’s pretty sure he could just think something out here and make it happen. 

The Hale roots go deep here, and if Stiles ever had a doubt as to his place with them, they’d be erased as he steps across the forest floor. The energy rushes under, around, and through him like a river. 

“I’m here. Meet me at The Tree,” Stiles says. 

Meet me at The Tree, The Tree, The Tree, the forest whispers. Branches and leaves shiver around him. 

His walk turns into a jog as he makes his way through the trees. He feels like he could take on a dragon and win right now. 

Peter and Derek are standing in front of the Nemeton when he arrives, their hands clasped together, shoulders loose, smiles spreading across their faces when they see him. 

“Nobody believed me when I said you were coming back,” Stiles says, coming to a stop in front of them. “Nobody believed you did this for us.” 

“Everybody was wrong. What’s new?” Peter says with a smirk. 

Stiles feels helplessly fond as he takes them in. “My god you two look good.” 

“You too, sweetheart,” Peter says. 

They step toward him, and he lets himself be folded into their arms. His face is in Peter’s neck, Derek is at his back, nuzzling against him. He takes what feels like the first deep breath he’s had since they left. 

“It’s done,” Peter says softly into his ear. “We did it. Just like we promised, and now we’re back for good.” 

“Thank goddess,” Stiles says fervently. “I was losing my mind without you.” 

“You’ll be ours now, yes?” Peter asks. 

“I never stopped being yours, you big lugs,” Stiles says, rolling his eyes. 

Derek kisses his shoulder, and Peter kisses his neck, and far below them Stiles feels the roots humming happily.

for reasons [did the 'taking classes' year of grad school in 2020/21 and was desperate not to be on zoom anymore] i only took 7/8 required credits for my phd when i was supposed to and now have to take a class. already kind of cringe and undignified given my advanced age in grad school years. but i couldn't even use it to take something like linalg that i actually need training in because it only counts toward my degree if it's a biology class. not only do i absolutely not need anyone to teach any biology topic to me at this point, because my job is to interpret and synthesize primary biology literature, but i also already took every even faintly relevant biology course in college, some of them twice, the majority of them at grad level with graduate students. and they were taught better and more effectively, because my undergraduate institution simply had better pedagogical practices than *** by basically any metric.

all of this has cashed out to me taking the paper-reading course about my field taught by one of my committee members, because it only meets once a week, i've read half the papers before, and it's graded on class participation which is my best stat. unfortunately, because it's taught by one of my committee members, i can't admit that i am taking it literally only for credit and would be capable of teaching the class given a couple of weeks to prep, and instead have to pretend that i am concerned about it meaningfully impairing my career that, while i have an encyclopedic knowledge of early embryonic development in flies and worms, i'm really more familiar with late embryonic development in mammals. this is requiring some contortions.
