How to Make Difficult Decisions
5 Pieces of Timeless Advice for Making Tough Choices
By Jory MacKay · June 29, 2017
Tumblr media
Your decisions make you.
Whether you’re selling them as an entrepreneur, marketer, writer, or any other kind of knowledge worker, or facing a serious crossroads in your personal life, the choices you make today define your future.
So it’s no wonder that when it comes to our growth and success, few skills are more important than the ability to make good decisions.
As Nobel-prize winning economist Milton Friedman wrote: "The best measure of quality thinking is your ability to accurately predict the consequences of your ideas and subsequent actions."
Trivial decisions like what shirt to wear or what brand of toothpaste to buy may be easy enough to make—though some of us spend hours on research to make those decisions. It's the gray area problems that are the hardest to resolve—ones where despite all the research you’ve done and experts you’ve spoken to, the answer is still unclear. Problems where it’s up to you, your experiences, and that pesky gut feeling to decide what is the best course of action.
Questions like: Should I take this job? Should I move to [place]? Should I marry [person]? Should I tell so-and-so about such-and-such secret? Pivotal questions that are difficult and risky to answer.
So how do you put yourself in the best position when faced with hard decisions?
Here are 5 pieces of timeless advice for how to approach and handle life-altering choices:
1. Think in Years, Not Days
Tumblr media
We may respect those able to fling themselves into a hard problem and make a quick choice with seemingly little thought, but making a meaningful decision needs to be done with care for the long-term effects.
In his book Get Smart!: How to Think and Act Like the Most Successful and Highest-Paid People in Every Field, author Brian Tracy presents ten different ways of thinking that enable better decision making.
The most important? Think about the long-term consequences of your decision.
Tracy turned to Dr. Edward Banfield, professor emeritus of government at Harvard University, who spent 50 years studying upward economic mobility. What Dr. Banfield discovered was that ‘time perspective’ was the determining factor of whether or not a family moved from a lower socioeconomic class to a higher one—that is, whether they improved their socioeconomic situation or not. The most successful people, Banfield found, "are intensely future-oriented. They think about the future most of the time," rather than thinking only of the next few hours or even minutes:
Unfortunately, most of us are conditioned to respond as quickly as possible.
From the moment our alarm rings, we’re in reaction mode—acting based on the stimulus around us rather than casting our eyes to the future. Evolutionarily speaking, it was important for us to be able to react to something new in our environment (you didn’t want to sit back and think about whether or not that lion really wants to eat you), but in the modern workplace we need to be able to calm those thoughts.
Commit to long-term thought
Sorry to sound like your mother or father here, but: Before jumping to a conclusion, consider the consequences of your decisions.
What’s going to happen? And then what might happen? And then?
Simply starting to think in longer periods will help settle your brain and shift from reaction to strategy mode.
Take a breath
There’s a reason your mother told you to take a few deep breaths before you get angry.
Make sure when it comes to a decision that you give yourself the space to think between stimulus and response and break your mind out of the destructiveness of "reaction mode.
Perhaps legendary Daoist philosopher Laozi put this best when he asked:
Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear?
2. Understand the Effects of Decision Fatigue
A recent study from Columbia University decision researcher Sheena Lyengar found that on average, Americans make 70 conscious decisions a day. That’s 70 distinct moments of wading through options and committing to a certain choice.
So it’s no wonder that at a certain point we reach what’s called decision fatigue—where the mental energy required to weigh the tradeoffs of our decision become too much for us to handle. Especially when it comes to the kinds of decisions we’re talking about here, which require a massive amount of cognitive grit to weigh the pros and cons.
However, even though decisions fatigue is inevitable, there are ways to make sure you’re not letting it affect your difficult choice.
Start strong
When Jonathan Levav of Stanford and Shai Danziger of Ben-Gurion University studied Israeli judges' decisions to grant parole to prisoners, a strange pattern emerged. The judges were dramatically more likely to free prisoners earlier in the day (before the judges had made any big decisions) or right after lunch (when they were rested and replenished) compared to the afternoon (when they've already made multiple big decisions).
Decision fatigue hits us when we’ve depleted our ego. We begin to lose the ability to weigh the outcomes of our choices and make dubious decisions. It’s why after debating for a few minutes, you agree to your friend’s bad restaurant choice just to get the decision-making process over.
It’s important to be self-aware of what state of mind you’re in before tackling a hard choice. Those 16-hour days going back and forth on a tough decision might be doing more harm than good.
3. Cut down on the number of decisions you have to make each day (e.g., wear the same clothes every day)
Tumblr media
The more responsibility we take on in our lives, the more decisions we’re forced to make. And, as we’ve seen, letting the small choices pile up sets us up for failure.
So perhaps the easiest way to make sure we can face a hard decision with our full attention is to simply make fewer decisions. Think of people like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Barack Obama, who limited their wardrobe choices to a few staple pieces. Mark Zuckerberg said his first public Q&A on Facebook:
I really want to clear my life so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community. I'm in this really lucky position where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than a billion people. And I feel like I'm not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life.
Or consider Tim Ferriss, who’s gone as far as outsourcing his email to Canada and performing the same workout routine for several years to cut down on the number of decisions he makes to save mental energy for the bigger decisions during his day.
Make life easier for yourself
Now, you don’t have to outsource your work to another country or throw out 90% of your wardrobe.
Instead, automate some of the simpler and easier decisions in your day:
Select from only a handful of lunch options that you rotate each week
Use a service like Amazon’s Subscribe and Save to ship common items like paper towels directly to your house
Consider asking wait staff for dinner recommendations so you don’t have to stare at an overwhelming menu
Sign up for a free Zapier account to automate the tedious parts of your job. Connect the apps you use and automatically move information between them
The key is to cut down on the amount of mental energy you expend on trivial decisions so you can save up for the more important choices in your day.
Do more with less
You might think you need as much information as possible before you’re able to make a choice, but too much research can hurt as much as it helps.
Gathering too much data and asking for too many opinions can lead to mental overload, analysis paralysis, and ultimately making the wrong choice. Instead, learning to recognize when the data doesn’t help, or becomes too much, will ultimately keep you on the right path.
4. Consider the Opposite
In a meta-analysis of 50 years’ worth of judgement and decision making research published by Harvard Business School, one piece of advice for making a difficult decision that came up time and time again was to get an outsider's opinion.
The researchers found that talking to those detached from the decision has three main benefits:
Reducing your overconfidence about what you know
Reducing the time it takes to make the decision
Increasing your chance of entrepreneurial success
We all have our personal biases when faced with a decision.
We want to believe one way is right even if the information doesn’t stack up. Instead of staying impartial, we look for information or opinions in line with our own.
The power of the outsider comes from escaping the cognitive biases we all fall victim to when working closely on a project—for example, the Confirmation Bias, described as the tendency to favor or spin new information so that it re-affirms what we already believe.
Bring in the Barbarian
While you might talk to a friend, colleague, or mentor to help bring in a new perspective, the outsider doesn’t have to be someone completely disconnected from the decision. In fact, it can be just as powerful to have someone within your team or even yourself adopt an outsider’s perspective.
This approach is sometimes described as making sure there is a "barbarian" at every meeting—someone who will speak awkward truths clearly and urgently.
5. Stay away from the ‘What if’ game
Once you’re close to what you feel is the right decision, it’s easy to get sucked into continuing down the same paths over and over again.
Psychologists call this phenomenon Counterfactual Thinking and it describes how we dwell on the outcomes of actions we didn’t actually take.
What if I’d answered that interview question differently?
What if I’d said what I really meant?
One of the hardest things about making a decision is that we are notoriously bad at gazing into our own crystal ball. At a certain point you need to trust you’ve put in the thought and work to make the right decision and just commit.
As University of San Francisco professor Jim Taylor explains: "The bottom line of decision making involves determining which potential decision will offer the best possible outcome based on what we know now."
If you need an even bigger boost of self-confidence, remember that decisions are also an opportunity for us to say something about who we are and what our values are.
As philosopher Ruth Chang explains in her excellent TED talk on how to make hard choices:
Far from being sources of agony and dread, hard choices are precious opportunities for us to celebrate what is special about the human condition, that the reasons that govern our choices as correct or incorrect sometimes run out, and it is here, in the space of hard choices, that we have the power to create reasons for ourselves to become the distinctive people that we are.
It’s impossible to know whether the choice you’re making is 100% right. Instead of feeling powerless, remember that your gut can be just as powerful a reason to make a choice as all the research, data, and opinions you’ve already gathered.
The kinds of decisions that build great products and even greater careers rarely come down to tossing a coin or choosing based on information that’s immediately available.
As Farnham Street’s Shane Parrish puts it: "Good decisions don't ensure success but bad ones almost always ensure failure."
When you’re faced with a potentially life-changing decision, make sure you’re doing everything possible to put yourself in a position to make the best choice. Do the research, be self-aware, and, most of all, trust yourself. You’ve got this!

Mental: Reading List
English:
Haruka Murakami, After Dark (currently reading):
In its center are two sisters—Eri, a fashion model slumbering her way into oblivion, and Mari, a young student soon led from solitary reading at an anonymous Denny’s toward people whose lives are radically alien to her own: a jazz trombonist who claims they’ve met before, a burly female “love hotel” manager and her maid staff, and a Chinese prostitute savagely brutalized by a businessman. These “night people” are haunted by secrets and needs that draw them together more powerfully than the differing circumstances that might keep them apart, and it soon becomes clear that Eri’s slumber—mysteriously tied to the businessman plagued by the mark of his crime—will either restore or annihilate her.
Paradise Lost, John Milton
John Milton's Paradise Lost is one of the greatest epic poems in the English language. It tells the story of the Fall of Man, a tale of immense drama and excitement, of rebellion and treachery, of innocence pitted against corruption, in which God and Satan fight a bitter battle for control of mankind's destiny. The struggle rages across three worlds - heaven, hell, and earth - as Satan and his band of rebel angels plot their revenge against God. At the center of the conflict are Adam and Eve, who are motivated by all too human temptations but whose ultimate downfall is unyielding love.
1Q84, Haruka Murakami (description from Wikipedia)
The novel is a story of how a woman named Aomame begins to notice strange changes occurring in the world. She is quickly enraptured in a plot involving Sakigake, a religious cult, and her childhood love, Tengo, and embarks on a journey to discover what is "real".
The Night Tiger, Yangzee Choo
When 11-year-old Ren's master dies, he makes one last request of his Chinese houseboy: that Ren find his severed finger, lost years ago in an accident, and reunite it with his body. Ren has 49 days, or else his master's soul will roam the earth, unable to rest in peace. Ji Lin always wanted to be a doctor, but as a girl in 1930s Malaysia, apprentice dressmaker is a more suitable occupation. Secretly, though, Ji Lin also moonlights as a dancehall girl to help pay off her beloved mother's Mahjong debts. One night, Ji Lin's dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir: a severed finger. Convinced the finger is bad luck, Ji Lin enlists the help of her erstwhile stepbrother to return it to its rightful owner. As the 49 days tick down, and a prowling tiger wreaks havoc on the town, Ji Lin and Ren's lives intertwine in ways they could never have imagined. Propulsive and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores colonialism and independence, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and first love. Braided through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a page-turner of the highest order.
Great Goddesses, Nikita Gil
Wonder at Medusa's potent venom, Circe's fierce sorcery and Athena rising up over Olympus, as Nikita Gill majestically explores the untold stories of the life bringers, warriors, creators, survivors and destroyers that shook the world - the great Greek Goddesses. Vividly re-imagined and beautifully illustrated, step into an ancient world transformed by modern feminist magic.
Aphrodite Made Me Do It, Trista Mateer
In this empowering retelling, she uses the mythology of the goddess to weave a common thread through the past and present. By the end of this book, Aphrodite will make you believe in the possibility of your own healing.
Kokoro, Natsume Soseki
Hailed by The New Yorker as "rich in understanding and insight," Kokoro — "the heart of things" — is the work of one of Japan's most popular authors. This thought-provoking trilogy of stories explores the very essence of loneliness and stands as a stirring introduction to modern Japanese literature.
The Lover, Marguerite Duras
Set against the backdrop of French colonial Vietnam, The Lover reveals the intimacies and intricacies of a clandestine romance between a pubescent girl from a financially strapped French family and an older, wealthy Chinese-Vietnamese man.
The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde (Reread)
Written in his distinctively dazzling manner, Oscar Wilde’s story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is the author’s most popular work. The tale of Dorian Gray’s moral disintegration caused a scandal when it first appeared in 1890, but though Wilde was attacked for the novel’s corrupting influence, he responded that there is, in fact, “a terrible moral in Dorian Gray.” Just a few years later, the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the trials occasioned by Wilde’s homosexual liaisons, which resulted in his imprisonment. Of Dorian Gray’s relationship to autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps.
Writers & Lovers, Lily King
Blindsided by her mother's sudden death, and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan. Her mail consists of wedding invitations and final notices from debt collectors. A former child golf prodigy, she now waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she's been writing for six years. At thirty-one, Casey is still clutching onto something nearly all her old friends have let go of: the determination to live a creative life. When she falls for two very different men at the same time, her world fractures even more. Casey's fight to fulfill her creative ambitions and balance the conflicting demands of art and life is challenged in ways that push her to the brink.
Death in Venice, Thomas Mann
Published on the eve of World War I, a decade after Buddenbrooks had established Thomas Mann as a literary celebrity, Death in Venice tells the story of Gustav von Aschenbach, a successful but aging writer who follows his wanderlust to Venice in search of spiritual fulfillment that instead leads to his erotic doom. In the decaying city, besieged by an unnamed epidemic, he becomes obsessed with an exquisite Polish boy, Tadzio. "It is a story of the voluptuousness of doom," Mann wrote. "But the problem I had especially in mind was that of the artist's dignity."
French:
Bonjour Tristesse, Françoise Sagan
The villa is magnificent, the summer hot, the Mediterranean nearby. Cécile is seventeen years old. She knows of love only kisses, dates, weariness. Not for a long time. His widowed father is a joyful follower of transient and unimportant relationships. They have fun, they don't need anyone, they are happy. The visit of a woman of heart, intelligent and calm, disturbs this delicious disorder. How do you avoid the threat? In the burning pine forest, a cruel game is brewing. It was summer 1954. We heard for the first time the dry and rapid voice of a "charming little monster" which was going to cause scandal. the second half of the 20th century was beginning. She would be like this teenage girl torn between remorse and the cult of pleasure.
À rebours, Joris-Karl Huysmann
The ultimate hero of the century! Cynical, misogynistic and romantic in the extreme. An idle aristocrat, isolated, he gives himself up to a meditation on existence, art, religion, women ... He delves into the experience of boredom to the point of disgust. His intellectual acuity as well as the refinement of his senses make him despise the vulgar while experiencing the inevitable suffering of an overly acute sensitivity.
Spanish:
Cien Años de Soledad, Gabriel García Marquez
the Buendia family, and chronicles the irreconcilable conflict between the desire for solitude and the need for love—in rich, imaginative prose that has come to define an entire genre known as "magical realism."

Film is a work of art in the form of a series of live images that are rotated to produce an illusion of moving images that are presented as a form of entertainment. The illusion of a series of images produces continuous motion in the form of video. The film is often referred to as a movie or moving picture. Film is a modern and popular art form created for business and entertainment purposes. Film making has now become a popular industry throughout the world, where feature films are always awaited by cinemas. Films are made in two main ways. The first is through shooting and recording techniques through film cameras. This method is done by photographing images or objects. The second uses traditional animation techniques. This method is done through computer graphic animation or CGI techniques. Both can also be combined with other techniques and visual effects. Filming usually takes a relatively long time. It also requires a job desk each, starting from the director, producer, editor, wardrobe, visual effects and others. Definition and Definition of Film / Movie While the players who play a role in the film are referred to as actors (men) or actresses (women). There is also the term extras that are used as supporting characters with few roles in the film. This is different from the main actors who have bigger and more roles. Being an actor and an actress must be demanded to have good acting talent, which is in accordance with the theme of the film he is starring in. In certain scenes, the actor’s role can be replaced by a stuntman or a stuntman. The existence of a stuntman is important to replace the actors doing scenes that are difficult and extreme, which are usually found in action action films. Films can also be used to convey certain messages from the filmmaker. Some industries also use film to convey and represent their symbols and culture. Filmmaking is also a form of expression, thoughts, ideas, concepts, feelings and moods of a human being visualized in film. The film itself is mostly a fiction, although some are based on fact true stories or based on a true story. There are also documentaries with original and real pictures, or biographical films that tell the story of a character. There are many other popular genre films, ranging from action films, horror films, comedy films, romantic films, fantasy films, thriller films, drama films, science fiction films, crime films, documentaries and others. That’s a little information about the definition of film or movie. The information was quoted from various sources and references. Hope it can be useful.
The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 1930s. Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 1948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “”Mr Television”” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. ❍❍❍ Formats and Genres ❍❍❍
See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intendevd five-season run.[citvatio””&n needed] In 2007, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2007, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “”I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. ❍❍❍ Thank’s For All And Happy Watching❍❍❍

Much of life becomes background, but it is the province of art to throw buckets of light into the shadows and make life new again. Many writers have been gloriously attuned to smells: Proust’s lime-flower tea and madeleines; Colette’s flowers, which carried her back to childhood gardens and her mother, Sido; Virginia Woolf’s parade of city smells; Joyce’s memories of baby urine and oilcloth, holiness and sin; Kipling’s rain-damp acacia, which reminded him of home, and the complex barracks smells of military life (“one whiff … is all Arabia”); Dostoevsky’s “Petersburg stench”; Coleridge’s notebooks, in which he recalled that “a dunghill at a distance smells like musk, and a dead dog like elder flowers”; Flaubert’s rhapsodic accounts of smelling his lover’s slippers and mittens, which he kept in his desk drawer; Thoreau’s moonlight walks through the fields when the tassels of corn smelled dry, the huckleberry bushes oozed mustiness, and the berries of the wax myrtle smelled “like small confectionery”; Baudelaire’s plunges into smell until his “soul soars upon perfume as the souls of other men soar upon music”; Milton’s description of the odors God finds pleasing to His divine nostrils and those preferred by Satan, an ace sniffer-out of carrion (“Of carnage, prey innumerable … scent of living carcasses”); Robert Herrick’s fetishistic and intimate sniffing of his sweetheart, whose “breast, lips, hands, thighs, legs … are all/ richly aromatical,” indeed “All the spices of the East/ Are circumfused there”; Walt Whitman’s praise of sweat’s “aroma finer than prayer”; François Mauriac’s La Robe Prétexte, which is adolescence remembered through its smells; Chaucer’s “The Miller’s Tale,” where we find one of the first mentions in literature of breath deodorants; Shakespeare’s miraculously delicate flower similes (to the violet he says: “Sweet thief, whence didst thou steal the sweet, if not from my love’s breath?”); Czeslaw Milosz’s linen closet, “filled with the mute tumult of memories”; Joris-Karl Huysmans’s obsession with nasal hallucinations, and the smell of liqueurs and women’s sweat that fills his lush, almost unimaginably decadent, hedonistic novel, A Rebours. About one character, Huysmans explained that she was “an ill-balanced, nerve-ridden woman, who loved to have her nipples macerated in scents, but who really experienced a genuine and overmastering ecstasy when her head was tickled with a comb and she could, in the act of being caressed by a lover, breathe the smell of the chimney soot, of wet from a house building in rainy weather, or of dust of a summer storm.”

My Reading and Resource List (Updated)
The Bible
The Qur'an Will tell you nothing about Lucifer, because as a Satanic figure he is only present in Christianity. However, his Muslim opposite number, Iblis, is an arresting figure in his own right. You can learn a lot by comparing and contrasting these two entities. Also, Lucifer wants you to seek knowledge! In this time of rising Islamophobia, refuse to be ignorant. Learn about Islam.
Sefaria.org Collection of Jewish texts including the Torah. Side-by-side English and Hebrew.
Gnosis.org Collection of Gnostic texts.
Complete Books of Enoch, Dr. A Nyland Finding a lot that is profitable in this translation and the commentary. Learn about the Watchers and their kids, the Nephilim!
Pseudepigrapha.com Giant online collection of apocrypha and pseudepigrapha. Seems to be run by a Mormon. Sure.
Lucifer: Princeps by Peter Grey. Peter Grey is a bit of a blowhard, but this is a very useful book. I recommend it reluctantly but strongly. It’s primarily a survey of scriptural, apocryphal, and mythological sources for the Lucifer legend, and as such it’s quite valuable.
The Luminous Stone, diverse collection of writings on Lucifer from a number of Western occult and historical perspectives. A mixed bag. But hey, it’s writing specifically about Luciferianism that wasn’t done by Michael Ford, and therefore it is precious.
Hemaphrodeities by Raven Kaldera. Good book on transgender spirituality in general, sections on Lilith and Baphomet may be of particular interest.
The Devil: A New Biography by Philip C. Almond. History of the “idea” of the Christian Devil, traces his origins in scripture. Includes a bunch of fascinating and entertaining material on witchcraft in the middle ages, witch trials, exorcisms and possessions. (Did you know Catholics and Protestants were literally using possessions and exorcisms as a way of talking shit about each other? This and other fun facts in the book!)
The Birth of Satan by Gregory Mobley and T.J. Wray. Retraces a lot of ground covered in the first two chapters of the book above, but in way more detail. An analysis of the scriptural sources for Satan. Good, fast read.
The Book of Adam and Eve (Latin version) Contains an early version of the fall of Satan which probably inspired the account of the fall of Iblis in the Qu'ran.
All the Kabbalah You Really Need to Know A video lecture given by a friend of mine. Great crash-course.
The Devil’s Bride by Martin Ebon a neat little book about exorcism from a psychological stand point– particularly about demonic possession and exorcism as a cathartic ritual which leads to emotional healing. Reads as fairly skeptical but is surprisingly open-minded about ESP and psychokinesis. But not demons. OK! We all have our biases, I guess. Anyway, it’s a fun read, but by no means essential.
A Dictionary of Angels Including the Fallen Angels by Gustav Davidson What it says on the tin. Shouldn’t be your only source but if you happen to find yourself wondering who the fuck Cabriel is this probably beats Wikipedia for a first stop. Nicely cited and will lead you straight to better sources.
A History of Witchcraft: Sorcerers, Heretics and Pagans by Jeffrey Burton Russell A neat, elaborately illustrated little history of witchcraft aimed at the layperson, by a scholar who has written much lengthier works on the subject that I will soon be reading. Not perfect but fairly legit.
God and the State by Mikhail Bakunin Satanic anarchy?! Not really, except for the first chapter or so. Still, worth the read!
The Tawasin of Mansur Al-Hallaj Interested in Iblis/Satan in Islam/Sufism? This is essential.
On the Origin of the World Trippy gnostic gospel, including retelling of Eden sympathetic to the Snake and to eating the damn fruit.
The Testament of Solomon Potentially useful demonology and also weirdly goddamn funny.
The Lesser Key of Solomon Get your Goetia on.
Demoniality by Ludovico Sinistrari. A weirdly sympathetic Catholic text about Incubi.
Compendium Maleficarum An old witch-hunting manual. Contains a description of a supposed Satanic witchcraft initiation/black baptism, which I adapted for my own use with great success. Also lots of fascinating history and exciting spell ideas!
Zohar.com Do yourself a favor and create a fucking account. It’s free. Search one of the most fascinating occult texts and one of the most important sources on demonology, particularly regarding the Devil’s four consorts.
The Revolt of the Angels, Anatole France Amusing philosophical Luciferian novel.
Paradise Lost, John Milton Because your image of Lucifer probably comes largely from this. And also, because it’s amazing.
Duino Elegies, Rilke "Who, if I shouted, among the hierarchy of Angels, would hear me?“
Litanies of Satan, Baudelaire Just gorgeous, perfect for use as a prayer.
Eloa, Alfred de Vigny Not necessarily much spiritual content, but it’s fun. A poem about Lucifer seducing an angel.
The Demon, Mikhail Lermontov Apparently romantic poetry about Satan seducing pure-hearted maidens is practically a genre. This is more fun than Eloa.
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, William Blake Beautiful, trippy, pro-Satanic, a fast read. Link is to full text.
La-Bas, Joris-Karl Huysmans A 19th century novel about Satanism. Gruesome, disturbing and not really Satan positive, but helpful for understanding how Satanism has been conceptualized.

GRIMOIRE OF THE BLACK POPE TEXT 2: Father Velius
Before proceeding with the Texts of Grimoire Of The Black Pope I shall briefly offer an  introduction to myself and my involvement within Satanism which has lead to the birth of this Infernal Manuscript. My journey into Satanism began in 1979 strangely enough through reading Black Magick novels by the likes of Dennis Wheatley and Joris Karl Huysmans and the Poetry of John Milton, this leading to the discovery of factual Occult books. By 1989 I had read a copious amount of books on subjects such as Satanism, the Goetia, LHP Tantrism, Kabbalah, Planetary Magick, Witchcraft, Celtic Paganism, Egyptian Magick, Cthonic Magick and Norse Wicca to name but some of the areas, it was also the year I was Initiated into Satanism fully through a small underground Cabal I had been introduced to. From this time my journey into the Infernal truly began, rising to the rank of High Priest in the Cabal that was mentoring me, I delved ever deeper into the Black Arts reading whatever material was presented to me, practicing the Infernal Operations I had been taught and experimenting with my own techniques. The knowledge I obtained through the Cabal was not of the sort one finds in published books, it was of a darker deeper more insidious and unholy form of Infernal Practice and it awakened in me a thirst for further knowledge and experience of the Dark Realms which has never been satiated fully. I eventually moved away from the Cabal and later presided as High Priest over two Satanic Covens of my own. But time passed and I once more ventured to  become a lone Satanist once more, dedicating my time to study and the development of techniques to Commune with Demons outside of Ritual ~ direct contact with Satan and the Demons of Hell through a process I called Meditational Communion . . . this process forged from a merging of Satanic practices and LHP Tantric Meditation techniques. Through this process I developed deeper and more purposeful Communions and connections with Our Lord Satan and the Demons of His Legion and soon found that through such practices the Demons could relay knowledge of other forms of Infernal Workings by means of a type of Automatic Writing. These discoveries lead me to explore new areas of Occult practice and locate new books, I spent two years focused on the studies of Dark Witchcraft, Demonic Elemental Alchemy and Devil Worship which enhanced further other Workings that I had already formulated. In 2010 I began teaching specific Students on a one to one basis and also began work collating all the material I had been developing since 1989 ~ this has progressed and developed into Grimoire Of The Black Pope which is now being relayed. At this point in time and with health matters which offer bleak prospects on my lifespan expectancy it has been decided to dedicate my time to the pursuit of unveiling Grimoire Of The Black Pope to all who would wish to explore it, this I know to be Satan’s wish and from a personal perspective it is a legacy for others and testament to the study and work within Satanism over the past years.   It was also decided - at the same time - to forge a small Satanic Order called The Unholy Conclave which will to a great extent be an Infernal Coven of Custodians for Grimoire Of The Black Pope formed to sustain and evolve its Mysteries in times to come, but also an Order in its own right dedicated to the deliverance of Satan’s Work.  Satan Himself through Communions has decreed that The Unholy Conclave shall be small in number, this ensuring the sincerity and dedication of the Order and a Sacrosanct Kinship between its Initiates. For now I shall say farewell and offer most sincere Infernal Benedictions upon those who come to know of and work from the Texts of Grimoire Of The Black Pope . . . may your path lead you into the ineffable majesty of Hell.  Ave Satanas!

What CEOs said on this week’s earnings calls
Each week we read dozens of transcripts from earnings calls and presentations as part of our investment process. Below is a weekly post which contains some of the most important quotes about the economy and industry trends from those transcripts. Click here to receive these posts weekly via email.
Although sentiment has been very positive this year, the hard data hasn't tracked the optimism, at least not yet.  Some of the comments on this week's earnings calls seemed to reflect the fact that this still isn't a robust environment.  Weakness in auto manufacturing is particularly concerning since auto production is typically a late cycle indicator.  It's also disappointing that two consumer products companies called the quarter "challenging."  Consumer weakness is another leading indicator of broader weakness.
Still, there's no sign of a significant change in the economy and optimism usually leads to stronger hard data.  The Fed has been tightening though and that can also portend a shift.  This also could just have been an off week.
Tumblr media
The Macro Outlook:
This quarter may have been more challenging than advertised
"this indeed was another challenging quarter and as I think we all know, the industry continues to face global market volatility and we have seen a further slowdown in consumer demand in several key markets, most especially the U.S. Southeast Asia and South Pacific." --Colgate CEO Ian Cook (Packaged Goods)
"while I remain optimistic about our long-term future, the near-term environment has become more challenging than maybe we saw at the beginning of the year. So category growth has slowed broadly in lots of places over the last year or so, and we expect that growth will pick back up over time, but that pickup may not happen quickly." --Kimberly Clark CEO Thomas Falk (Packaged Goods)
Manufacturing has been slow to recover
"I think the outlook is actually stable...in the U.S. and the progress is directionally good, but the speed is not that what we would like of course." --Manpower CEO Jonas Prising (Temp Staffing)
Auto production is weakening
"auto weakening is taking place. There’s no doubt that it’s plateaued...There’s no doubt in my mind that there’s some weakening going to be occurring. It’s only to the effect." --Nucor CEO John Ferriola (Steel)
But companies are sticking to their guidance
"The improvement has been a bit uneven, it’s not happening in a straight line. That said...everybody is standing by their guidance for the third quarter. Where generally speaking the United States included, things are getting a little better." --Robert Half CEO Harold Messmer (Temp Staffing)
Union Pacific is expecting improvement in 3Q
"volume, we think is going to be our friend certainly in the third quarter improving from the second quarter. And we’ll just have to see how the numbers play out." --Union Pacific CFO Rob Knight (Railroad)
There's no sign of a significant change
"however you wanted to describe it, an eroding plateau...we don’t see anything in terms of the economy, the health of the consumer, housing, oil...that would suggest that over the next two...years, that there’s any kind of significant collapse or dramatic change. We do think it’s going to decline. We think it will be a soft gradual decline" --Ford CEO James Hackett (Autos)
But could there be a shift "relatively soon"?
"The Committee expects to begin implementing its balance sheet normalization program relatively soon, provided that the economy evolves broadly as anticipated" --FOMC Statement
Tumblr media
International:
There's optimism in Europe, particularly France
"While we continue to be cautious on the UK and as they prepare to exit the EU, we are optimistic about the overall outlook for Europe...We also see...a great deal of optimism in France, as President Macron has a clear mandate for reforms including labor market reform which should benefit that economy and stimulate better employment growth." --Manpower CEO Jonas Prising (Temp Staffing)
Germany is also very strong
"Germany, by definition, which is a big engine in Europe is doing well in the manufacturing side. And our business in Europe, if you look upon the portfolio, Industrial business is very strong." --3M CEO Inge Thulin (Industrials)
There may even be signs of inflation in Europe
"Europe service, inflation is starting to at least be talked a little bit, even though at very small levels. But for many years, there was no discussion of inflation at all. And now at least there is some talk about potentially a little bit of inflation coming through" --United Technologies CFO Akhil Jori (Elevators)
Caterpillar was positive on construction in China
"Construction in China and gas compression in North America were highlights." --Caterpillar CEO James Umpleby (Construction Equipment)
Financials:
Industries are changing faster than banks can keep up
"one of the things that I don’t think banks do that well...on things like Uber story is pull way up across all of our lending businesses and ask what is the impact given that industry after industry is being revolutionized...if we just go and make one loan at a time...we could wake up and have a lot of rude surprises like we did in the taxi kind of business." --Capital One CEO Richard Fairbank (Bank)
Consumer:
The Whole Foods purchase validated omni-channel
"you think about omni-channel and the advantages that brings, and you look at the recent purchase of Whole Foods, and you scratch your head and say why did that happen, I think if you start to envision how omni-channel could play an important role in e-commerce. You could see an unfolding scenario that says there can be successful pure players and successful omni-channel players. And maybe it all gravitates towards omni-channel at some point." --Stanley, Black and Decker CEO James Loree (Tools)
The retail industry still needs to restructure
"I think there’s a fundamental need to rationalize. People want to get larger to fight online and to fight Amazon and retail specifically. And there’ll be restructurings as well. Now the last time I was asked this, this would retail step in for energy? And the answer is I don’t believe it’s going to be as big an opportunity as energy. Energy was a very, very large user of capital in the leverage world...but a lot of those are smaller companies who are just kind of closing stores and shutting down" --Moelis & Co CEO Ken Moelis (Investment Bank)
Consumers buy more premium brands online
"What we observe on eCommerce thus far is that the consumer is actually — tends to buy more premium and even if they’re not buying the premium brands, they tend to buy in multiples. So, in fact the eCommerce behavior is favorable to us from a consumption point of view" --Colgate CEO Ian Cook (Packaged Goods)
Tumblr media
Technology:
Data and AI are now the core currency of businesses
"The core currency of any business going forward will be the ability to convert their data into AI that drives competitive advantage." --Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (Enterprise Tech)
Technology is ultimately just a tool
"Ensure Tech has become sort of the flavor of the day to a certain extent. Having said this...when the day is all done these are just tools and ultimately how effective they are, how helpful they are will be determined by the people who are using them and the expertise that they have" --WR Berkley CEO Robert Berkley (Insurance)
The average Youtube viewer watches for 60 minutes per day
"YouTube now has 1.5 billion monthly viewers and people watch on average 60 minutes a day on their phones and tablets." --Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai (Internet)
Facebook has 2 billion monthly users (there are 3.7 billion internet users)
"This quarter we reached an important milestone for our community. 2 billion people now use Facebook every month, and more than 1.3 billion people use it daily." --Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Social Network)
Comcast says there's still room for growth in broadband
" growth…there is significant runway ahead of broadband. And the key to me when you look at this is the upside of the opportunity. We’re sitting at 45% penetration right now. So there’s growth just there. The overall market is growing with only 75% of households subscribing to Internet access" --Comcast EVP David Watson (Cable)
Healthcare:
Birthrates around the world have been disappointing
"So we had kind of projected 2016 was going to be a flat birthrate year. In the second quarter, we got the final fourth quarter numbers that showed it down 2% for the fourth quarter, which brought the full year down 1%...Korea’s birthrate...was down 7%, which is a pretty big, big drop...we don’t really understand it at a deep enough consumer insight level...But a broad trend is that Millennials are having their children a little later." --Kimberly Clark CEO Thomas Falk (Packaged Goods)
Small hospitals need to get bigger by selling into health systems
"We’re seeing more opportunities in the marketplace now. I think as many health systems, again, went through the positive environment from 2015 and early 2016, and now we’re seeing some volume pressures. They're looking, I think, to be part of the bigger system....we’re pleased to see the pipeline more robust than it has been in recent years" --HCA CEO Milton Johnson (Hospitals)
Scale is an advantage in most industries
"The broad story remains the same that it has been domestically, which is larger players taking share from smaller players...I still believe that the longer-term story is the competitive advantage that scale brings to the larger players versus the smaller players." --Dominos CEO J. Patrick Doyle (Pizza)
Industrials:
Construction activity is still well below its prior peak
"if we use 2007 as kind of the peak market, I would say we’re somewhere around 65% of where we were back in 2007. So it’s getting better. It’s continuing to improve… we are still hoping for some news on our infrastructure build, which would prolong the cycle." --Nucor CEO John Ferriola (Steel)
Infrastructure spend is missing
"what has, I’d say, disappointed for the last several years has been a lack of growth in infrastructure investment, which is really, I think, the area that looks prime to need some more investment and some more growth." --Caterpillar CEO James Umpleby (Construction Equipment)
Waxy corn will be DuPont's first CRISPR-developed product
"our CRISPR strategy, I would say, is something that is still emerging. We’ve clearly identified a few early targets. We talked about our waxy corn program....So it will be our first commercial product. We’d expect that by the end of the decade. We’re beginning to work on a few other diseases that we think CRISPR could help us control." --DuPont EVP James Collins (Chemicals)
Tumblr media
Materials, Energy:
OPEC is trying to rein in supply
"The OPEC Gulf countries and Russia...remain fully committed to sound and consistent stewardship of their resource base...These countries are...actively supporting the rebalancing of the global oil market by taking a procative role in moderating the current production levels" --Schlumberger CEO Paul Kibsgaard (Oil Service)
But US equity investors are preventing recovery
"U.S. equity investors...are encouraging, enabling and rewarding short term production growth in spite of marginal project economics...In this market the pursuit of equity appreciation outweighs the lack of free cash flow, net income and return on capital employed for both E&P companies and the service industry...their pursuit of short term equity returns from the U.S...is actually preventing the recovery of the oil market" --Schlumberger CEO Paul Kibsgaard (Oil Service)
This wont last forever
"I think if we stay in a $45 to $50 environment. You are going to have a number of the private operators probably lay down some rigs. So we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a contraction in the rig count by maybe 50 to 100 rigs by the end of the year...They can’t continue to outspend their free cash flow because in our view the equity markets and the debt markets will be much tighter this time around than maybe year or year and half ago" --Core Labs CEO Dave Demshur (Oil Service)
But don't bet against wildcatters' animal spirits
"I said several quarters ago the customer and animal spirits back and they are with a vengeance and they are now running free to North America. Here is my last piece of wisdom for you. Do not bet against the animal spirits that our North America customers embody. I never have and I never will because that is the bet that you will lose." --Halliburton CEO Dave Lesar (Oil Service)
There's a lot of capital sloshing around the world
"there is a lot of capital that’s being raised and has been raised. And in general, there is just a whole lot capital sloshing around the world, looking for returns. " --Blackstone COO Tony James (Private Equity)
