im writing a scene in my fic and having THOUGHTS. chip and jay in the worst argument of their time together, using anything and everything they can find to hurt eachother and prove their points - insults, body language, past failures - and. and yet.

the point jay is trying to make in this scene directly references the black rose. as in, they are the only proof she has other than a passage from a textbook and a few other scrapped together things.

do you understand how easy it would be for Jay to weaponize this? to turn it against him like she does every other little thing she finds - another piece of ammunition - as they fucking destroy eachother? So easy. SO EASY. exhibit a)

he is expecting it. he is dreading it. exhibit b)

she doesn't. They were screaming five seconds ago, but she stops. She speaks softly and doesn't weaponize them any more than she needs to in order to prove her point. and when she does talk, it's gentle. it's not USING them to hurt him, it's using the facts to prove a point. Jay and Chip BOTH KNOW that even when they are tearing eachother open, there are some things you don't touch. They dig into every insecurity, every flaw, every insult they can think of, but not the Black Rose. never the black rose.

“Right.” Chip pulled a cup off of the stack sitting next to him, grabbing a marker and jotting a name down. “Alright, that’ll be $5.45”

Chip reached a hand out toward Gillion. The latter stopped, simply staring down at the palm. For a moment, he could hear that rushing water once more. Something about this felt so familiar, and yet…

“You good, dude?” Chip raised an eyebrow. His smile still remained where it was, if a bit strained.

“Oh, uh…” Gillion blinked, realizing he was staring, and reached into his back pocket, pulling his wallet out. After an uncomfortable amount of time spent fumbling with the bills inside, he placed the money into Chip’s hand, smiling apologetically.

Chip opened the register, grabbing the change and handing it to Gillion, before moving to work on the drink.

ORCZY'S FAN FICTION RECOMMENDATIONS

For following Fandoms: Varian and the 7 kingdoms, Lego monkie kid, JRWI riptide

Hi there! I tought I would share some of my favourite fanfictions I've read since April last year, as sort of a recap and also recommendations. These are all longer stories btw, ranging from 78K to  236K words. Hope you find something that piques your interest :D

VAT7K

-Varian's Tangled Trials by IFoundYouJustineTime and TheArtistsMuse A complete Vat7k story adapting the original creators' plot points into an amazing, 24 chapters (episodes) long fic that reads like an actual cartoon. If you're new to Vat7k or Tangled The Series, or even if you haven't seen the latter (like me), you WILL enjoy this. If you like a fun adventure with a bunch of nerds as a found family, this is for you.

-What Summer Meant to You -If I Really Hated you (and I really, really do) both by Battybatzgirl First one's a battle of the bands/modern AU, second is an AU where the boys are rival engineers, both focusing on the ship Varigo. The writing style is what made me stay and read these to the end. Incredibly funny and entertaining to read, the way Varian and Hugo are characterised is just. So good. If you like a well written, lighthearted, romantic comedy, this is for you. (Both include some skippable adult scenes, but the story is much more about the romance)

-Making End's Meet by Meltthepoint As the author's name suggest, this is a melting point (Donella x Ulla) story, set in a modern setting. Donella enrolls Hugo into this new school, who then befriends Varian. Ulla and Donella meet again. This is about how two women make up and start anew after their lives went into directions they didn't want. The story is much more character focused, a really fun read. Very insightful about the women's characters. An exception, as I still haven't finished reading it. Definitely not the type of fic I can binge read, but I'm really enjoying it.

At the end of everything by Squirrelflight A Night in the woods AU (haven't played the game, you don't have to, to read it), and unfinished as of yet, but man. Worth checking out! Unlike the stories above, this one's definitely darker and has a really tense aura. Love it. The writing is so good it makes me so thrilled about what will happen next! I also really like, once again, the characterisation.

-You can stay here by KALL A pre canon story about how Pigsy and Tang adopt MK, how MK gets to be in a safe environment and starts figuring himself out. Great writing style, entertaining plot, what more could I ask for? (maybe an update lol) As of yet, unfinished, and hasn't been updated since late 2022. The author actually posted ( https://www.tumblr.com/its-kall-the-clown/735524530668371968/are-you-going-to-be-updating-any-fics-on-your-ao3 ) about wanting to rewrite the story sometime. Which is great! In case you're reading this, take as long as you want!

-A garden across our collarbone by PittedPeaches Spicynoodle soulmate AU where what you write, or in MK's case, draw on your skin, appears on the soulmate's skin as well. Red Son's journey of (very slowly, this is a slowburn) falling in love with MK. A lot of inner monologues, the story plays out more like a retelling of what happened from Red Son's perspective. Kind of like a diary entry and I LOVE IT. I actually didn't understand the pairing before reading this, nor was I that invested in Red Son's character. This fic changed everything. (it also sends you good luck if you read it on the train! I acquired: friends!)

RIPTIDE

-BREAKING FREE! by earlgray_milktea A fish 'n chips Highschool Musical AU (another thing I haven't seen, you don't need to, to read this). The writing is so undoubtedly Disney, it is at times so over the top dramatic, you can't help but smile at half the interactions. The charm is big on this one. The characters are exagerated but somehow not (completely) out of character. Basically if Riptide was on Disney, this is exactly how they'd act. Also it's just really, really cute.

-Depths of Natarus by goldpines Chip Mermaid AU set in an Undersa/Oversea war, focusing on Fish n Chips as well as Jay Ferin (my girl!). Two reasons why you should read this right now. First: the descriptions are SO detailed and immersive! It made me also kinda have a crush on Gillion Tidestrider. How. Second: it made me care about Jay. And the way she's written here is just so so great. You can tell the author knows what they're doing, the feels just keep coming, I alost teared up multiple times. This story makes you feel a lot of emotions at once, an overall amazing reading experience.

And these were my favs since last April. Specifically the ones that made me go absolutely insane. In a good way. Again, if you have any good recommendations (preferably longer stories, but shorter ones are also fine), please feel free to share them.

Statement of Timothy Rand

I’m definitely not done with it (and still gotta go through and edit what I do have) but if people want to see the start of it here’s the beginning part of the tma/bitb crossover I was thinking about. The premise is Rand is giving a statement about the events that happened in Galloway, but he did lose his sanity so things are a little Funky for him. It’s written in transcript style so there’s lines for him and then stage directions for background noise and some movement, anywho ramble over lol if y’all want to read it’s below the cut!

Statement of Timothy Rand regarding his experience with The Hive in Galloway, Louisiana.

[Click of a tape recorder, can hear the whirring of the tape throughout the following. Otherwise it is a quiet room. There is a sigh from the person in the room.]

Rand: So just, talk into this thing? Ok, guess that’ll work…Fuck, man, how do I even start? Uh, I guess it started with my sister, Rachel. She was always the best of us. Shining star. You know she could’ve been something. Done something good? Man, I don’t know. She was kind though. A pain in my ass, but she had a kind heart. God knows if I was the one that went missing instead of her then maybe this all wouldn’t have happened. I mean, would anyone even notice a burnt out loser like me going missing? Probably not. If they did, they would’ve said “it was only a matter of time” or some bullshit like that. But no, Rachel went missing and I was the one that never left. At least that's what John kept saying. Maybe if Rachel was around she could’ve done something more to fix everything before it led to…well all that. But, can’t change what happened. Even though it was my fault that she never made it home, I should’ve been there for her, I should’ve—fuck.

[Sound of rustling, pulling out a cigarette, and a lighter flicks open to light it. Lighter and pack can be heard being stuffed back into his pocket and there’s the sound of a cigarette burning followed by some coughing before it eases. He takes a couple drags from the cigarette which can be heard throughout the following. The tape whirs on.]

Rand: My sister went missing and then things were never the same. John was at work all hours, Ma tried her best, she really did, but I certainly didn’t make it easy for her. Then Kian and Rolan left town. After graduation, they couldn’t stay or whatever. Fuck if I know. Kian had a plan to become a big time rockstar, travel the world, perform in big ole Hollywood. He was always larger than life like that. Talking about his big plans and dreams. Never really expected him to ever come back.

[Rand pauses, takes another drag from the cigarette. There is some static noise in the background that slowly grows, nothing distracting, but it’s definitely there. The tapes whirs on. The following is said quieter.]

Rand: Rolan fucked off to Chicago and became a hotshot lawyer…he didn’t come home for ten years. I never saw him until they both came back to town. Surprised they even agreed to it.

[Rand scoffs, clears his throat, and continues. The static is more present. The tape whirs on.]

A little Stoneflame fic for you guys :DD

The sun shined brightly down on the Albatross where the crew of the riptide pirates went about their days. Igneous was leaning against the railing that looked over the main deck. From his view, he could see Chip and Ollie goofing around on the main deck, appearing to be pulling pranks on their fellow crew mates. 

“Chip! Chip! Did you see Miss Jay’s face!?” Ollie said excitedly, rocking back and forth on his heels as he did so.

“She was so shocked! We totally fucking got her!” Chip replied, seemingly beaming with pride at that, a large grin engrossing his face. Igneous always loved when he was like that, even if it was over some childish prank. 

Speaking of children, the more closely Igneous looked at Chip and Ollie the more he realized their physical similarities. Sure there were obvious differences, eye colour, skin colour and the fact that Ollie was a half-elf whereas Chip is a human. But there were also similarities such as hair colour, their face shape and their physical mannerisms.

Actually, as he continued to watch, he realized they were quite close, Relationship-wise. Igneous didn’t think kids in their 20s and 12 years old were usually that close…  I mean he had been in the Black Sea for over a decade so maybe things changed over that time but he didn’t think so…

Oh fuck was Ollie Chip’s kid!? 

I mean it made sense, the two were practically inseparable. And Chip did have a seemingly parentalish relationship with Ollie, even if he allowed for reckless behaviour and even encouraged it at certain points. There was still that love in his eyes towards Ollie that Igneous had seen in his own pa towards him. 

But wasn’t Chip only in his twenties? Does that mean he had Ollie super young? Or was Ollie adopted? Igneous knew Chip was an orphan himself so it didn’t seem so far-fetched that he would adopted. But even so, twenties was still such a young time to be raising a kid, he is practically still a kid himself! But he couldn’t judge, it was not his life to do so and if the kid and him were happy and safe there was nothing that igneous could or should do on the topic. 

Though saying that, did he almost become a father himself? Chip did ask to marry him, so if he had accepted the proposal that means we would become a father to Ollie himself? Igneous didn’t think he was ready for that kind of responsibility yet. He did love Chip- as a friend! He loved Chip as a friend! At least he was pretty sure he did, but either way, he was not prepared to be a father yet. 

Igneous stood there for a while, his brain running over everything he just possibly discovered over and over again and he continued to watch Chip and Ollie as he did so.

After a while Ollie and Chip eventually split off, Ollie going over to hang out with Gillion and Pretzel and Chip seemingly walking over to where Igneous stood. Igneous watched him carefully as he continued to walk closer, eventually landing right beside him leaning on the railing beside him.

“What’ch you up to there igneous?” Chip turned to face him as he asked, his handsome smirk still present on his face.

“Nothing much Lil bro.” Igneous replied. He paused for a moment, thinking over whether or not to mention it but curiosity got the best of him. Let’s hope it doesn’t kill him like that one cat, “Uh Chip can I ask you something?”

“Yeah sure, what about?” Chip seemed to shift his weight from one foot to another, he appeared to be preparing for a deep talk. Which, fair, over the past couple of weeks there seemed to be no end to them. The Black Sea seemed to do that to people. 

“Don’t worry bruv, it’s nothing serious.” Chip seemed to relax a bit at that, “Just, when you are asking people to marry you, probably should mention you have a kid. Don’t think I would be ready to be a pa if I had accepted.”

“What- Igneous what are you talking about? I don’t have any kids, at least I don’t think I do.” Chip looked genuinely puzzled at this and in exchange so did Igneous. 

“What’cha mean? Ollie? Isn’t he your kid?” Igneous questioned. Chip and Igneous stood there, staring at each other for a moment. Igneous at one point felt himself start to heat up, whether it be from embarrassment, something more romantic or a combination of both he didn’t know. Chip eventually broke the silence by going into a fit of laughter, leaving Igneous even more dumbfounded.

“No-no HAHHAHAHA NO!! Ollie isn’t my kid! He is just the kid we keep on the ship! You-you think I am a father?” Chip started to snicker at that, “I barely have worked through my immense daddy issues, I am not fit at all to be raising a kid.” 

“Oh I am sorry bruv, I just assumed-,”Igneous was a bit taken a back, we thought for sure Ollie was his kid, “You and the kid seemed so close, thought you must be his dad.”

“Nah, Ollie is more like a little brother to me than anything,” Chip said, something glazed over his eyes for a second before he continued, “Well you know the proposal is still on the uh table if you want to. Maybe you and me could be a “pa” or whatever you said one day. We be a power couple! Raising a badass pirate kid.”

Igneous felt himself start to blush, which was harder to see on his stoney skin which he was thankful for. He had embarrassed himself enough with the captain today. Though thinking about it, the idea of becoming a pa with Chip one day was one that… excited him a bit. Maybe that’s how he would want to use his newfound freedom away from the Black Sea. With Chip, raising a kid on the sea.

“Might have to take you up on that offer one day.”

Waves crash into either side of the Albatross, the wind thrashing forward. With every step came a harsh rocking, as crew members scattered to get to a respective position, any alert from Alphonze fading away into the loud booming of thunder. Darkened clouds swallow any remnant of Aster’s light, the bitter hands of Zeus and Poseidon aligning. A suffocating pull tugging at Gillion’s lungs. Every breath Gillion takes burns, with each wave around nearly billowing over half of the ship.

He stumbles forward, clutching destiny’s blade as he whirls his head left and right, commands being sent out by his co-captains as the crew braces for a storm. Gillion subconsciously clenches his jaw, carefully walking across waterlogged wood to the edge of the ship. Rain pushes his hair in the way of his face, and like drums of war lightning falls, striking down any possibility of a calm travel.
