Stress and Sewing
Pairing: Fan Apprentice (Harlow) x Julian Devorak Words: 2,008
Being a seamstress wasn’t all that hard, at least to Harlow. Her mother had taught her to sew when she was a child, and she had fallen in love with the art of using a needle, thread, and fabric to create a beautiful masterpiece she could actually wear. But some days were better than others. Today was one of her lesser days on the scale of good and bad. Customers had been rougher on her than normal, demanding more and more of her time and patience, which she usually had an abundance of, but with the 2nd annual Masquerade coming up, people were getting pushy.
Her shoulders sagged as she flipped the sign of her tiny shop to close behind her final customers, and she pressed her forehead to the heavy wooden door. Another day done, another 10 masquerade outfits to alter, fix, or sew. The thought had her stomach twisting into knots.
One week was all she had. Julian had urged her to come to the event, and after days of his unabashed begging and pleading from his end, she finally caved. But, with all of the customers banging her door down to work on their costumes, she hadn’t had any time to work on her costume.
With a light groan, she lifted her forehead from the door and slowly turned towards her shop. Her counter space was filled with paperwork, fabric samples, and general debris that had been left behind between customers. To the right, where the customers stood while she pinned and assessed the garments while on the customer, was the only generally clean space, as she tried to keep that part of the shop as tidy as possible. Customers usually brought a friend or lover for a second opinion on what needs to be done, so she tried her best to keep it as debris-free as she can.
She knew there was more of a mess in the back room, where she stashed her current projects, both personal and business-related. It was mostly the latter, much to her disappointment. Oh, how she would love to just sit down and sew something just because she wanted to!
Her feet felt like lead as she walked over to the counter and began collecting the fabric scraps and debris from the counterspace, tossing the garbage into a small wastebasket beneath the counter. Right beside that was a large box filled with different fabric samples she used when a customer wanted a custom outfit. She crouched down and gripped the box, dragging it out into the open and lifting the cardboard lid. As she began slotting the squares of sample fabric away into their rightful homes, she heard the door open and shut.
“Harlow?”
She knew that voice. “Down here!” She raised a hand up over the counter and waggled her fingers, her other hand busy sorting the fabric. Warm, familiar hands clasped around hers and a shadow fell over her body as Julian leaned across the wood, peering down at the box she was currently rifling through.
“There you are, darling. Did you miss me?” Her fingers twitched between his palms as she tried to squeeze his hands.
“Terribly so. I’m glad you’re here.” She stood up, Julian straightening up with her movement. He leaned in and pressed a kiss to her cheek as she continued, “Would you mind helping me clean up a bit? I haven’t had any chance to all day, and there’s so much to do.” Julian’s face suggested he didn’t want to, but he nodded anyways.
“Of course. Anything for you.”
A grateful smile spread across her lips as she pried her hand away from his and wiped it on her apron-front. The theatrical frown that pulled his lips down at her actions made her giggle. “What? My hand got sweaty.”
The pair settled into a comfortable silence as the worked on cleaning the front of the store. Julian busied himself with clearing up the remaining debris on the counter while Harlow finished sorting the remaining fabric squares back into their homes before joining him. Once that was done, she disappeared in the back to retrieve the broom. Except, the broom wasn’t in it’s usual spot in the tiny closet.
“Where did I put it?” She grumbled, folding her arms across her chest as she surveyed the tiny backroom. It could have been anywhere; she usually tried to put it back in it’s home when she finished, but when the shop gets busy, there typically isn’t time to keep everything orderly.
“What’s with the long face?” The curtain covering the entryway parted as Julian ducked inside. In his hands: the broom and dustpan.
She shook her head in disbelief. “Where did you find that? I was just looking for it.” He quirked an eyebrow.
“In… the front of the store? Where you left it last night after Malak knocked over the glass jar?”
“Oh, yeah. I forgot.” She huffed, grumbling to herself as she paced over to the rack filled with all of her projects. Twenty-four alterations in total, one week to get them done. Not to mention she still had her costume, which Julian has been bugging her to see.
“Hey, hey, Harlow. Are you alright? Really alright?” Hands gently gripped her shoulder and spun her around. She had to crane her neck to look up into Julian’s concerned eyes. “You seem really, really stressed, which isn’t like you.”
She bit her lip, eyes darting between the exit and his eyes. Typically, she would love to confide in him about her work issues, but thinking about work made her think about the unfinished costume she had yet to finish.
“I…” Her eyes closed, then squeezed shut in an attempt to corral the stress-filled tears threatening to spill over. “I-I’m okay.”
“Nonsense.” Any sign of fun and games was long gone as Julian cleared off an area for the two of them to sit down. Harlow didn’t protest as he guided her into his lap, and curled into his chest when he wrapped his arms securely around her. “This can’t be just about a silly broom. What’s going on?”
She had almost forgotten about the broom. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. “No, it’s not just about the broom. It’s everything, Julian. I…” She closed her mouth, then opened it again to continue, but nothing came out. She couldn’t bring herself to say the words. I’m in over my head. I shouldered too much.
I’m a failure.
“You’re what, darling?” His hands gently rubbed up and down Harlow’s back, a comforting gesture that made her want to cry all the more.
“I… I can’t keep up with all of the work that’s coming. The masquerade is in a week, Julian. One week. I have twenty-four alterations and repairs to do in that timeframe, as well as finishing my own costume.” She pressed the top of her head into his collarbone and swiped at her face, trying to catch the rogue tears that got to her cheek, but they kept coming faster and faster, until she was hiccuping and sobbing into Julian’s chest. “I-I feel like a failure. Mom would be so disappointed in me.”
“No.” His hands stopped rubbing her back to gently pull her away from his chest so he could look at her face. She protested weakly, trying to remain hidden so he didn’t have to see her looking like such a mess, but he was stronger. One hand cupped her chin while the other set to work wiping the tears from her face. “Listen to me, Harlow. You are one of the most talented seamstresses in all of Vesuvia, and are one of the most hardworking people I know. You are most definitely not a failure. Why do you think all of these people are coming to you of all the other seamstresses in Vesuvia?”
She sniffled, cheeks heating up as Julian smiled so kindly at her, so patiently and so lovingly. “You’ve run yourself ragged, my love. You didn’t fail. You just need to regroup and take things one step at a time. You want to know how I know that?” She cocked her head slightly in response. “You taught me that. Take your own advice and take things one step at a time. Take care of your alterations that are on hand right now, then worry about others.”
A kind smile spread across his lips as he leaned down, kissing her forehead first, then each cheek, the tip of her nose, and finally her lips. She kissed him back, her eyes sliding shut as his hands cupped her damp cheeks. Now, the tears falling down her face and over Julian’s knuckles weren’t that of defeat; they were tears from the overwhelming amount of love she felt for the man kissing her.
“Why do you love me? I’m such a mess, Ilya.”
“I could ask you the same thing, my love.” He kissed her again, lightly yet so sweetly it made her crave more. “Are you feeling better? Or-” A dangerous smirk pulled at his lips, “do you need more encouragement?”
A hot blush spread across her face as she shook her head. “N-not now, Ilya. I do feel better though. Thank you. I love you.”
The flush that spread across his cheeks was enough to blow the rest of the storm clouds shrouding her away. She smiled.
“I, I love you too, Harlow. More than you’ll ever know.” She gave him one final kiss before sliding off his lap, a bit self-conscious of her blotchy, damp face. She swiped the back of her hand across her cheeks and sniffed once before turning back to the mess in front of her, now with new eyes. Determination flooded her as she glanced at the rack. Most, if not all of the dresses and suits were just a quick alteration, which she has done time after time.
Simple. She could do this.
“Julian, would you mind finishing up the front? I’m going to get started on some of the alterations so I can work on my costume.”
The look of sadness and despair that crossed his face made her giggle. “Can we just keep having heart-to-hearts and save the cleaning for later?”
She shot him a faux annoyed look. “And do the cleaning when?”
“...later?”
“Wrong.” She laughed, shaking her head. “Please, Ilya? I do want to get upstairs and cuddle you sometime tonight…”
“Fine, fine! This must be what true love is if I’m actually, willingly cleaning.”
He blew her a kiss, grabbed the discarded broom and dustpan, and disappeared into the front of the shop, the purple curtain swishing behind him. She could hear him humming to himself as he set to work.
God, did she love him.
With a shake of her head, she turned to the rack of costumes that needed fixing. All of the garments were labelled with their owner’s information and the work that was needed to be done. She had to admit, she adored a few of them, and envied the lucky ladies and gentlemen that got to wear them. Her personal favorite was a beautiful crimson dress with elaborate sequins and embroidery lining the bust and neckline. It was paired with elbow-length matching gloves and a beautiful fox mask, both of which the owner of the dress kept with her when she left the dress.
That dress, despite the beauty of it, was the one that had been waiting the longest for her to alter. She fingered the layers of fabric for a moment, feeling the fine silk slip over her skin, before grabbing it off the rack and clearing a spot at her work desk and sitting. She plucked the paper with the required fixes from the hangar and familiarized herself with the fabric once again. Just a simple shortening of the dress. She could do that.
With Julian’s humming in the background and a fresh set of eyes in the situation, she grabbed her sharpest blade and snipped into the fabric.

Hi! Asks! 4, 14, 24 and 44 :3
4. Has your character ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them? If so, does anyone else know?
Individually, they all witnessed things that changed them, and between them, they most likely have told each other. But the one thing they've witnessed all together was the colliseum.
They were teens and preteens at the time, exploring the city on their own for the first time and while they knew how cruel the world can be, the battles that were held there changed their perspectives, in different ways too.
Morana and Syro were sort of interested, quite mesmerised. It motivated them to learn to fight and use weapons as adults.
Calyx and Libelle on the other hand were terrified, the concept of death and adrenaline still scary to them, which made them strive to be kinder with people and help them rather than fight them.
Eris is middle ground. While she didn't like the fighting, she was fascinated by the resulting deaths. In turn, it's pretty much the reason she became Julian's apprentice during the plague outbreak. It's also the reason why she wanted to try necromancy once too.
14. Does your character remember names or faces easier?
Names - Morana, Libelle
Faces - Syro, Eris, Calyx
24. How quick is your character to trust someone else?
It depends if that someone is a close one or not. If they're close, they will trust that person easily. If they're a stranger or someone they just met, none of them would trust immediately. Maybe just Libelle would trust a little too quick.
44. How easy or difficult is it for your character to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaning it?
For Eris and Syro, it's always easy. They're both straightforward, don't hide their feelings, and they'd always mean those three words.
Morana's the type to silently tell her partner that she loves him through actions and small affections, or maybe by saying things like "you have to be careful" and "I don't want you to get hurt". Once she's brave enough, she'll tell him how much she loves him and it'll come from the bottom of her heart.
Calyx and Libelle are rather shy and self conscious about it. In the beginning of the relationship, they won't say it first, but they will return it and mean it more than they want to admit. After a while, they'll start giving I love yous to their partners more often.
(Thanks for the ask, I really appreciate it! :3)

Thomas Thorne
Tumblr media
A named reader x Thomas Thorne fic (ish, one sided as reader can't see Thomas) if Allison never inherited the house.
After the death of Heather Button, the last remaining descendent of the Button line - the ghosts of Button House didn't know who would inherit the house, or whether (heaven forbid) it be sold off.
"Oh, a carriage!" Kitty exclaims from the window that she was standing at, as a red Mini Cooper went along the gravel driveway.
All of the ghosts crowded around the window as to men climbed out of the car and looked at the expanding yard around the property. Getting out of the driver's side door, was a gorgeous brunette (with Total Eclipse of the Heart playing) who gave a glance to the building before her, then turned her eyes to the two men looking out to the grass.
"It's Belinda Carlisle," Pat says, noticing the song that was coming from the car.
Thomas's eyes didn't leave the brunette's form, watching her as she clung onto the driver's side door strangely. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid his eyes on. He knew he would be reciting poetry to her during her time here.
"If it's marshy, I'm not doing it!" She calls, as the other lady, who happened to be sitting behind the beautiful driver also got out of the car. However, the backseat passenger had her eyes locked on the window - where the ghosts were congregating.
"See us?" Robin asked.
***
The four stood talking in the driveway for a while, the driver hadn't moved from her spot by the car door, as the song changed from Total Eclipse of the Heart to one that none of them knew (not even Julian, who was the youngest ghost), but given that the word/name 'Ruby' was repeated, Pat could maybe guess that it was also the title of the song.
Another car pulled up on the gravel driveway, pulling some of the ghosts away from the four already on the driveway - a tall, sophisticated man got out.
"I'm so sorry, we didn't know it had been sold to someone," the beautiful brunette apologised, before turning her attention to the two men in her group. "Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, come on," it gets a laugh from Julian, Pat and even Lady Button (the rest of the ghosts having no idea what she was talking about).
"Who is the young lady called Daisy?" The sophisticated man asked.
The young woman who was the backseat passenger raised her hand. "That would be me,"
"I have both bad and good news for you," he said, handing over a stack of documents. "Your 4 times great aunt passed away,"
"I don't have a 4 times great aunt," Daisy replies. The sophisticated man revealed a family tree, revealing that it was true.
"Due to her recent passing, and yourself as the only remaining living family member. You have inherited Button House," he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a set of keys.
The girls' eyes widened. The unknown name of the other lady who had captured Thomas's attention reached into her pocket. "What were the lottery numbers?!" She calls.
When they were said, she let out a loud 'dammit!' - which was scolded by Lady Button. "I thought your good announcement would have rubbed off.
***
Elizabeth (the current person who received Thomas's affection) was sat at the kitchen table, watching the cursor blink on her word document, she was halfway through writing her third novel - and had hit her writer's block.
She had been sitting at the computer for a good few hours, with the ghost of Pat and Thomas sitting watching her.
The radio was playing softly in the background, only slightly putting her off. Then Bette Davis Eyes came on, making Elizabeth look round in awe at the song playing.
Elizabeth started singing along with the song, "Her hair is Harlow gold, Her lips a sweet surprise, Her hands are never cold, She's got Bette Davis eyes. She'll turn her music on you, You won't have to think twice, She's pure as New York snow, She got Bette Davis eyes," her head bopping and foot-tapping along as well.
Daisy walked in, the only person who can see the ghosts, "Morning Liz, Thomas, Pat," Liz looked up from her computer.
Daisy had always been able to see ghosts after the car crash that nearly killed her at 19-years-old. It freaked the ghosts of Button House out that she could see them straight away.
"Two of them are in here?" She asked, getting a nod back from the ghost seeing woman. Daisy turned around and saw Lady Button and Julian walking into the kitchen behind her. Soon, Liz was slightly hit by the writing bug and the sound of her fingers hitting the keyboard at a rapid pace was heard in the kitchen (a massive mix between the space bar and the harsh taps of the backspace).
Then she stopped, made some kind of growling in frustration sound before putting her chin into the palms of her hands. "The dentist told you not to do that," Daisy said, walking over and sitting in the chair next to Liz that wasn't occupied by a ghost.
Liz stops what she was doing. Giving Daisy a look, and a raised finger. Earning a horrified gasp from Lady Button.
***
Then Darth Vader's theme music started playing between the floorboards. Liz lets out a sigh. "Oh no," as the top of her head fell into her hands.
"What is that?" Daisy asked, looking up at the ceiling, as to where Mark would probably be.
"That is Marks' 'I'm unhappy and about to destroy the planet' music," Liz says, taking a drink from her glass. Rolling her eyes.
The radio changed from Bette Davis Eyes to Going Underground by The Jam. "Wait, if he's unhappy, shouldn't we talk to him?" Daisy asked, getting up from her seat and walking to the kitchen.
"Shouldn't we talk to him? Haven't you learnt anything in 6 years?" Liz questions, raising her eyebrow at Daisy as she left the kitchen. "Oh, for crying out loud!" She hurried after Daisy.
The ghosts that had been left in the kitchen followed after the computer typing lady who currently held Thomas's affection.
The living girls and the ghosts slowly walked into Marks room, seeing him heavily working at his own laptop, his blue blanket thrown over his head.
"You doing ok, honey?" Which Elizabeth knew was a bad idea and left her to deal with Mark - she put up with the Darth Vader planet takeover the entire way through college and university, now it was Daisy's turn.
***
Thomas and Robin were sat in the kitchen with Liz, as she was writing what was she said was the final chapter of this book. Then a sudden noise shouted from her laptop, making all three of them jump at the noise.
Until Liz's face breaks out in a smile, and a click of her mouse, "It's Cherry Cola!" She exclaims, giggling after she said it. Robin and Thomas exchanged a look of confusion. "How are you, Cheryl?" She asked, as Daisy now wanders into the kitchen, after dealing with Mark's drama. Looking over Liz's shoulder, she opened her mouth to make a joke. "I already made the Cherry cola joke,"
Thomas and Robin shuffled around and looked at the screen of Liz's computer. There was another young lady, however, Thomas didn't start reciting poetry to her the second he set eyes on her.
"Harry may have done something," Liz and Daisy's friend Cheryl said, before holding up a hand with a ring on it.
"Shut up, he PROPOSED!" Liz exclaimed, bouncing in her seat. Their friend Cheryl nodded and showed the pair the ring at a better angle. "It's gorgeous," It was the kind of ring that Liz had always dreamed of - three stones of her birth month, and that is what Cheryl has (thank god they weren't born in the same month!)
"It's gorgeous, Cheryl!"
***
Liz and Daisy had offered to host Cheryl's wedding, and the bride would've taken no for an answer when they said she wouldn't be paying (but she wore them down...).
The day before, Cheryl arrived with the rest of her bridal entourage (Liz being the maid of honour, and Daisy being a fellow bridesmaid), as did Liz's grandfather - after she had gotten the OK from Cheryl.
Kitty had exclaimed that there was 'another carriage' - she still hasn't called it a car. Which caught Daisy's attention, and called to Liz that her grandad was here.
Liz stood on the doorstep, watching the car roll to a stop. Once it did, she walked over to the car and helped her grandfather out.
The Captain had wandered over to the window where the rest of the ghosts were congregating, and instantly recognised the old man (all the years that have gone by and the Captain knew he would easily recognise him). "Havers? Elizabeth is Havers granddaughter?"
Daisy looked over at the World War 2 Captain. "That was your left-hand man in the war? Liz's grandpa?"
***
The wedding went off without a hitch. Harry and Cheryl were married, whilst photos were being taken - Daisy, Elizabeth, Mark and Tom were setting up for the wedding lunch and reception.
"Oh, wow," Cheryl, dressed in white, looked around in awe. An empire skirt with butterfly sleeves that Elizabeth had carefully made her. "Guys, this is amazing," she said, wafting her hands in front of her face. "I honestly don't know what to say,"
"It's your wedding day! The first of us to tie the knot!" The group we're slowly approaching their 30s. "It's the least we could have done,"
Just then, it dawned on Thomas's that eventually his sweet Elizabeth would meet someone and probably settle down and have children of her own and that nearly broke his heart. He couldn't imagine her marrying someone else...
***
The lunch was eaten, the dances were danced, and soon everyone was taken to the dance floor (even the ghosts). Well, almost everyone...
The only one sitting down was Havers. Elizabeth's grandpa.
Liz has walked over to the DJ booth and asked him to play a certain song after the current.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears for Fears.
Which got Elizabeth's grandpa out of his seat.
And everyone belted out the pre-chorus after the instrumental interlude. "There's a room where the light won't find you, holding hands while the walls come tumbling down, when they do I'll be right behind you!
Thomas looked over at Elizabeth, who was dancing hand in hand with her grandfather, a smile so wide that it could crack her face. It hurt that he was separated from her by time and death. It hurt that he would see her move on with her life, and he would be forever attached to Button House until he moved on from here.

ℙ𝕀 𝕂𝔸ℙℙ𝔸 ℙ𝔸ℝ𝕋𝕐 : HARLOW x DAMON --- @chxyvngs
she’d been at the party for what felt like hours now , harlow now more than a few drinks in .  things were beginning to whirl , spin , the feeling of being intoxicated becoming all too familiar at this point . she wandered the event , almost like a little kid that had gotten lost , stumbling a bit as she attempted to walk .  people were dancing , sweating , yelling , laughing ... the southern belle stuck in what felt like a sensory overload , totally lost in translation .  in her stride , big eyes fell on a welcoming face , and it was either this ... or falling fate to someone else that couldn’t be trusted .  tapping his shoulder , interrupting his conversation with another guy ( whom she would later learn was his best friend , julian ) , she slurred out , “ i lost winona , can you help me ? ”

First Impressions
Pairing: Julian Devorak x Fan Apprentice Words: 2,822 Synopsis: Harlow makes a risky trip into the marketplace while sick for thread and gets tangled up with a handsome yet intriguing Doctor.  Notes: So I’m on a roll with this whole Harlow x Julian thing, so have a fic about the two of them meeting!
Thread. It was all she needed in the marketplace, then she could go home and be sick in the private of her own home. That was the only thought motivating her to get into the marketplace instead of keening over and lying in the street or, less dramatically, just going home and saving the trip for another day.
Her head swam as she focused on putting one foot in front of the other, eyes downcast and heart hammering. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been this sick. She silently cursed the woman who came in the week before, sniffling and sneezing while Harlow attempted to assess the dress and see what needed to be done to get it fitting properly.
Ironically, that same woman who got her sick is also the reason for her trip today. The color of her dress was so different from what she typically worked on  - a bright baby blue - that she didn’t have the correct color thread to fix up the dress, which was supposed to be done within the next few days.
Yet another reason to curse that woman.
As the familiar tents and bustle of the marketplace got closer, she drew the hood of her travelling cloak further down her face to try and mask her face. She quickened her pace as much as she dared, just wanting to get back before she really passed out. Really, the cloak wasn’t helping her much. It was warm outside as it was, and she was running a fever. That mixture of things was making her dizzy, but she pressed on.
Thread. Thread. Thread.
She breathed out in relief as the vendor came into view, the various exotic fabrics laid out and on display for shoppers to browse. She could identify a few at a glance: velvet, silk, crêpe, satin. That was all she could identify before she approached, and the vendor greeted her with a bright grin and friendly wave. “Harlow! What brings you here today? Need some more silk?”
She brought down the hood of her cloak, exposing her messed up ponytail and flushed cheeks. Her throat clenched as she tried to swallow, and winced at the feeling of what she assumed swallowing needles would feel like traveled through the back of her throat.
Well, here goes nothing.
“Thread. Please.” The vendor’s eyes widened at Harlow’s raspy, nasally voice. Typically, it was bright and almost melodic in the way she spoke, but that was all but a memory now.
“C-certainly.” She dipped below the table, reappearing with a bin filled with threads. Harlow wanted to help clear an area for the thread box, but in fear of contaminating the fabric and getting everyone else sick, she buried her hands into her cloak and simply watched. “What color did you need?”
“The-the dress is sky blue, like-” Harlow swallowed as a coughing fit threatened to overtake her. Eyes watering, she pointed out the color she needed. The vendor quickly prepared the thread, and she awkwardly shifted her weight.
She hated feeling this helpless.
A figure emerged  beside her, and she quickly sidestepped a bit, trying to keep some distance. “I couldn’t help but overhear that your voice is a bit on the raspy side. Might I offer a bit of advice?”
Harlow’s cheeks burned as she looked up at the man next to her. His hair was auburn and curly, longer on his right side than his left. An eye patch covered one eye, and his face was on the angular side. Actually, all of him was angular. She couldn’t help but admit to herself that the man in front of her was a bit attractive.
But he had overheard her talking, sounding like a frog. Did he know she was sick?
“I-I’m okay.” Her voice was barely above a whisper; it was all she could give him with her throat in such bad shape. The man beside her tutted.
“Nonsense! I can hear the rasp of illness in your voice! I suggest trying to rest your voice and drink some tea with honey in it. The most important part is rest, though. In order to get better you can’t-”
“I said, I’m fine!” She snapped, a lot louder than she meant to. It triggered a coughing fit that racked her whole body. She doubled over, trying to get a hold of her body again. Her cheeks warmed as she felt the gazes of all the people near fall on her.  A hand pressed into her back, gently rubbing up and down and patting.
“You obviously aren’t fine. Where do you live? Can I help you home?” Eyes watering, she forced herself upwards and shot a pleading look to the vendor.
Wordlessly, she handed over the coins for the thread to the woman behind the table, took the thread, and frantically escaped into the crowd, ignoring the man’s pleas to wait. The eyes of the people on her were too much; she pulled the hood of her cloak over her head and forced her weak body into a light jog, squeezing between shoppers.
She had to get out.
BANG.
She all but slammed the front door to her shop behind her, making sure that the sign was flipped to “Closed” before slumping over. A vicious cough rattled through her chest all but paralyzed her for a moment.
Once she made it out of the marketplace, she had slowed her pace to a regularly-paced walk the rest of the way. By the time she made it back, it felt like her heart was going to burst out of her chest and keep going down the street without her.
Finally, the coughing subsided enough for her to straighten up again and make her way to the counter, dumping the spool of thread on it before shucking off the cloak. Her skin felt clammy and slick with sweat; her head was pounding and her nose was so blocked she had to resort to mouth-breathing, making her mouth feel dry and disgusting.
She didn’t know who that man was telling her how to deal with her sickness, but she would be damned if she let him tell her how to take care of her throat. Her mother had always told her to gargle salt water and lower her voice, which worked just fine in the past. She didn’t need some stranger telling her what to do.
With her Mother’s words echoing through her mind, she slowly made her way upstairs to her little apartment. Most of the shops in the area were like this, making it easy to prevent theft and quick to get to the shop from home should something go wrong. Her parents were fortunate enough to get a shop that had enough space for the three of them, but without her parents there to fill the remaining space, it always felt empty.
As she prepared the salt water the younger her was already cringing at, her hazy mind floated to her family. Both of her parents had succumbed to the Red Plague that had cursed the city before. Her father went first, when the plague first came to Vesuvia, and her Mother followed towards the end. Harlow was thankful to still be alive today, to not have caught it, but every day, guilt followed her, almost as bad as the threat of the plague was: She should have been the one to die.
Of course, she knew that was just her conscience speaking on behalf of herself, but she couldn’t help it; she loved her parents dearly. Both were hardworking, honest people, working hard to provide for their only daughter and support each other. If anything, they were her heroes, her role models. Now, though? They were gone, and she was on her own. All she had was the memory of them, and the thought of them moving on to a better life outside of the one they shared.
Shaking her head to cut off that train of thought, she quickly mixed up the salt water and tossed it back, crinkling her nose as she gargled and spat it out into the tiny sink of her kitchenette. She cleared her throat, coughed, sniffled, then trudged off in search of her pajamas, some tissues, and an extra hair tie to get her hair off her damp neck.
The apartment was dead silent, besides her sniffling and coughing, allowing her thoughts to run wild. How would she work like this? She could barely walk, much less thread a needle and make precision cuts into fabric! And how would she communicate with customers? Notes? Pathetic.
She groaned as she flopped down onto her bed, wincing as her throat protested, and tossed an arm over her eyes. Of course she got sick. She was usually so healthy; she couldn’t even remember the last time she had been so sick that she could barely move.
Her eyes had drifted shut when she heard a faint knock on the door downstairs. She waited, hoping they would see the closed sign and leave. But, they knocked again, a bit louder this time. God, just leave me alone!
Not even caring about her appearance, she made her way downstairs, gripping the railing like a vice until she got down and shuffled to the door. When it swung open, she was ready to attempt to turn away a customer, but fell short.
It was the man from the market.
Annoyance simmered inside her veins at the man standing there, looking both proud and sheepish all in the same breath. He let out a sigh, his shoulders sagging a bit. “She did give me the right address. I was afraid I had been pounding on some random shop for no reason.” Harlow tried to give him her best you’ve got to be kidding me look, but it probably fell short. “How did you find my shop?” Both she and he winced at the sound of her voice; her from the pain, him from the shock.
“It’s worse than I thought. How much have you been talking today? I know you spoke some in the marketplace, but have you spoken much today?”
“Yeah, I was just across the way chatting it up with the neighboring shop about business tactics,” she deadpanned. He chuckled quietly.
“Yeaaah, I suppose that was a dumb question.”
He fell silent, looking at her. She looked back, confused and just wanting to lay back down. “If you’re here for me to alter or make something for you, I’m closed.” She gestured towards the sign on the window. “Now, If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go wallow in self pity-”
She began shutting the door, but it was abruptly stopped by his foot landing in front of it. “I know this seems weird, but I was really concerned about the condition of your throat earlier today. It sounds like a bad case of Laryngitis, in which case you need to rest your voice and-”
She raised her hand up, silencing him. “And just how do you know this?”
The man’s face fell for a moment, confusion spreading across his face for a moment before his eyes widened and cheeks reddened. “Did- er, did I not introduce myself?”
“Nope.”
“Oh- oh, no. I’m so sorry. Erm, I’m Julian Devorak, or Dr. Devorak. I’m. Well, I’m a doctor.” He stuttered slightly in embarrassment, shifting his weight slightly. That’s when she noticed he had a bag in his hands. A doctor’s bag.
“What, are you here to give me a checkup and charge me? Because newsflash; I’m sick, I need medicine, but hey, what do you know, I’m broke and can’t afford a doctor right now!” She coughed when her voice rose, swallowing painfully.
Dr. Devorak’s face fell. “I’m not going to charge you. Why would I do that? I didn’t ask half the people in the Vesuvian Marketplace if they knew where you would be to give you a checkup and charge you for it. I just wanted to help you.”
She couldn’t tell if this was a joke or not. Her head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, his words ringing around uselessly in her mind as she tried to figure out what he was saying. He continued.
“I brought over some things I thought would make you better. Could, um… May I please come in?” He offered her a sort of sheepish smile that she couldn’t detect any malice from. She stared at him for a moment, standing there in his ridiculously extra coat and knee high boots and eye patch, and finally stepped to the side.
She showed him upstairs, where Dr. Devorak promptly laid her down and examined her. When he finished, he had a bit of a frown of his face. “It seems you just have a cold that turned a bit nasty, dear. I’m going to make you some tea with honey in it.” He patted her shoulder lightly and stood up, rifling through his bag and pulling out a packet of tea and a container of honey. “You stay here, alright?”
She wasn’t going anywhere. She didn’t think she could even stand. Harlow nodded weakly, eyes sliding shut as she listened to the sound of his footsteps retreating into the kitchen. It was quiet, except for the sound of water boiling on the stove and Dr. Devorak shuffling around in the kitchen. She worried about him rifling through her things, but it quickly faded. He wouldn’t do that.
When he returned, he helped her sit up with a gentle hand on the back, holding her up while he stuffed pillows behind her. Harlow sniffled and coughed a little before groaning. “Shh, try not to use your voice.” His gloved hands cradled one of her parent’s glasses like it was worth millions as he brought the tea up to her lips. “I cooled it a bit, Take a sip, dear.”
She did as she was told, unable to fight him on it. In all honesty, she didn’t mind being taken care of like this. It reminded her of having her parents back again, taking care of her on the rare occasion she did fall ill.
The thought made her shiver slightly. She missed her parents, but they were gone. Dr. Devorak was here, and the tea sliding down her throat was soothing and dulled the ache in her throat a bit.
“T-thank you, Dr. Devorak,” She murmured, eyes drifting shut. She was tired, so very tired.
“Julian, please. No need for formalities.” Harlow didn’t have the energy to respond; his voice was already far away to her, as if hearing the echo of his voice. “Rest easy, Harlow. I’ll be here when you wake up.” The last thing she heard was the sound of the glass being set down before she fell asleep.
The pain in her throat was bearable when she awoke. Disoriented and sweating, she tore off the blanket covering her and sat up, groaning when a wave of dizziness hit her. “Don’t sit up so quickly, Harlow. You’re still recovering.” She froze. Did she recognize that voice?
Wary, she glanced around, finding a man sitting in a chair beside her bed. He looked familiar, but she couldn’t place where she had seen him or how he was in her room until the memory from before came back.
The marketplace. Talking on the doorstep. Him making her tea before she fell asleep.
Dr. Julian Devorak.
She watched as he stood up, pulling off one glove to press the back of his hand to her clammy forehead. “It seems your fever broke. Great job. How are you feeling?”
When she opened her mouth, his eyes widened and he cut her off. “Don’t try talking yet. Give me a thumbs up or down.” She shot him a look before raising her hand and giving him a thumbs-in-the-middle. “Good, good. That’s much better than a thumbs down!”
As he tended to her, pressing a cool cloth to her forehead and helping her drink some water, she allowed herself to relax. If he wanted to hurt or rob her, he could have done it in the time she was passed out instead of lounging in the chair beside her bed. If she was being honest, she somewhat liked being taken care of by him. His presence was comforting, as she had been alone since her mother passed.
At least for now, she wasn’t alone, and that was all that mattered. When he went to take the now warm cloth from her head, she reached up, gripping his wrist. He froze, eyes wide and cheeks reddening as she murmured, “Thank you for helping me.” His gaze softened as a smile graced his lips.
“Of course. Now please stop talking, you’ll hurt your voice more.” She obliged, closing her eyes and allowing him to tend to her.
Maybe getting sick wasn’t so bad after all.

Facebook and Instagram launch a week of grad-themed events and features
Facebook today revealed its plans to celebrate the 2020 graduates this week across both Facebook and Instagram. The series of events, starting today on May 11, will include the company’s previously announced plans to air a virtual graduation ceremony on May 15, featuring celebs like Oprah Winfrey, Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner, Lil Nas X, Simone Biles and Miley Cyrus, among others. Facebook will also now introduce a range of new graduation-themed products and programming across both Facebook and Instagram, including AR effects, chat filters, stickers, challenges, student spotlights and homages, contests, gift guides, collaborative films and more.
The events serve a dual purpose. In addition to celebrating grads, Facebook aims to extend the time students, their families and friends spend on its apps, outside of the virtual graduation ceremony itself.
To that end, it programmed a week’s worth of online activities for graduates and others to participate in.
Starting today, May 11, Instagram will add a new graduation countdown sticker for Stories that will promote the May 15 graduation ceremony. Users can also re-share from the main @instagram Story and set a reminder for themselves about the event. Instagram is additionally introducing two new hashtag challenges, including a throwback #GradPhotoChallenge and #MySeniorQuote challenge to feature quotes from seniors across the U.S.
On Facebook, the company is beginning the “Student Spotlight” series that will celebrate this year’s outstanding grads.
Both platforms will also gain grad-themed AR effects. This includes Instagram’s AR graduation speech and cap filters with customizable tassels and Facebook grad cap and walk stickers on Stories. Facebook will offer profile frames, as well, in a variety of school colors.
A grad-themed video chat filter will launch on Messenger, featuring a grad cap experience in a range of styles. College-themed grad cap and gown experiences will also launch in the Effects gallery in Instagram’s Stories.
On Tuesday May 12, Instagram will host a virtual senior night focused on athletes, featuring star athletes including Sabrina Ionescu, Myles Powell, Shay Knighten and Andrew Pryts.
Wednesday, May 13 begins a virtual Instagram comedy show featuring Quinta Brunson, Cameron J. Henderson and Christine Snaps. Meme creator Daquan is also launching an exclusive graduation meme on @instagram and @daquan.
Facebook on Wednesday will begin airing a feature film by Jenn Nkiru of Iconoclast, which gives voice to this year’s graduates as they share excerpts of Marina Keegan’s “The Opposite of Loneliness” essay using imagery from their own school years.
Facebook will also on Wednesday begin to share grad walks on its Facebook app Page’s Stories section, and encourage others to do the same using the hashtag #GradWalk2020.
Thursday, May 14 starts Superlative Day on Instagram, where featured creators will share some of the best superlatives from students. Instagram will also be home to an art contest co-hosted by @brooklynmuseum and @design, which is asking for student portraitures to appear in a virtual “art show” on both accounts, with support from Instagram’s own @creators, as well. Five winners will be awarded $5K grants from Instagram.
The @creators account will additionally feature Bryce Xavier, Nia Sioux and Livvy Dunne and “yearbooks on Instagram,” starting on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Instagram’s @shop will open a graduation gift guide featuring products from a number of small businesses that can be shopped right in the app.
Friday, May 15 is the big day with the virtual ceremony, #Graduation2020, at 11 AM PT/2 PM ET via Facebook Watch within the Facebook app and on facebook.com/facebookapp. Highlights from the event will be posted to the @instagram account and on contributors’ own social media.
Facebook today announced new additions to the ceremony, which was already set to include an introduction by Sheryl Sandberg, an address by Oprah and performance by Miley Cyrus (“The Climb.”)
It’s now adding Cardi B, DJ Khaled, La La Anthony, Kristen Bell, Selena Gomez, Sterling K. Brown, Matthew McConaughey and Milo Ventimiglia to the event and has released a full list of other contributors who will join at some point during the broadcast.
These include:
AdamRayOkay (as Rosa), Amy Schumer, AnnaSophia Robb, Antoni Porowski, Ashley Graham, Becky Lynch, Bailey Sok, Bobby Berk, Bretman Rock, Cardi B, Charles Melton, Chiney Ogwumike, Chris Paul, Chrissy Metz, Cookie Monster & Grover, Daddy Yankee, Damian Lillard, David Dobrik, David Oyelowo, Desus & Mero, Dillon Francis, Diplo, Dixie D’amelio, DJ Khaled, Drew McIntyre, Dude Perfect, Emily Ratajkowski, Gloria Estefan, Gordon Ramsay, Hailee Steinfeld, Huda Kattan, Iliza Shlesinger, Jess & Gabriel Conte, J.J. Watt, Jonathan Van Ness, John Mayer, Joshua Bassett, Julian Edelman, Kandi Burruss, Karamo Brown, Kofi Kingston, Kristen Bell, La La Anthony, Lacy Evans, Lana Condor, Lisa Leslie, Lisa Vanderpump, Lizzy Greene, Luis Fonsi, Marlee Matlin, Marsai Martin, Marshmello, Matthew McConaughey, Milo Ventimiglia, Nick Kroll, Olivia Rodrigo, Ronny Chieng, Roman Reigns, Sasha Banks, Selena Gomez, Sterling K. Brown, Steve Aoki, Sofia Carson, Sofia Wylie, Steve Harvey, The Miz, Tim Tebow, Tori Kelly, Whitney Cummings, Wilmer Valderrama and Winnie Harlow.
Also on Friday, friends and family and other community members will be invited to share advice and well-wishes with the Class of 2020 as part of a “Dear Grads, Love Groups” initiative. These will be compiled into a film directed by Chris Wilcha and made available on the Facebook app after the commencement. Instagram’s @shop will then close the week of events with a Stories takeover from small business founders who will also share their advice with grads.
In the weeks following graduation, Facebook will begin allowing students, teachers and alumni in the U.S. to offer and request assistance in their college communities in its Community Help feature. This will focus on categories like career help, housing, moral support, fitness and supplies.
The week-long list of events is only one of several online graduation celebrations that students can join this week, as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced schools to cancel their planned in-person ceremonies due to the pandemic and forced lockdowns. While many schools are offering some sort of virtual experience for graduates, some students said these have been disappointing and report feeling sad, depressed and having missed the chance to celebrate an important milestone.
Along with Facebook, other online events include YouTube’s virtual gradation on June 6 featuring commencement addresses by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, plus participation from BTS, Lady Gaga and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. There are also a number of graduation-themed TikTok challenges, and individual schools are often promoting their own social media hashtags for their virtual celebrations.
But despite the star-studded nature of some of these virtual events, they may not address students’ feelings of loss. The pandemic has taken away many things, but students having to miss out on milestone events like prom and graduation are particularly difficult because they can’t be revisited at some later, “safer” date further down the road.
