The Dylann Roof case- In Depth

Dylann was born April 3rd 1994 to mother Amelia and father Franklin with 2 sisters Amber and Morgan. During early childhood his parents would divorce and his father would later remarry. His stepmother accused his father of abüse. He would beg his step mother to let him live with her but she wasn’t able to. Dylann would be described to have obsessive compulsive tendencies with germs. In middle school he would stop caring about school and started smoking weed and drinking vodka. In nine years he would have attended seven schools. In 2010 he would drop out of Highschool and continue playing video games and smoking weed and drinking.

In 2015 he was caught with an invalid prescription for suboxone at a mall to which he was banned from for a year. Later that year he was caught loitering in the mall to which they searched his car finding a forearm grip for a AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and six unloaded magazines capable of holding 40 rounds each but was let off it was legal in the state. Roofs Suboxone charge was mishandled and a system error took it as a misdemeanour instead of a felony. Which would have possibly prohibited him from purchasing the firearm.

Later Dylann would look into the Trayvon Martin case and from an unknown article concluded Zimmerman was in the right. He then fell down a rabbit hole of black on white crime and misinformation. He then found 4chan and would find even more misinformation and hard right ideologies Dylann states he hasn’t been the same since that day. Which leads to his manifesto titled ‘The last Rhodesian’ Rhodesia being the African state founded in 1965 ran by primary Europeans and a white supr3macy ideology before being abolished in 1979. The term now sticks with white supremac!sts like Dylann had became, as he also used the flag on his jacket. In preparation before the attack he looked up black churches and found the Emanuel Methodist Episcopal Church and would scout the area and ask around about mass times.

June 15th 2015 somewhere around 8:00pm Dylann entered the church, once he did he was greeted by Rev.Pinckney and given a bible to study with. Roof was sat next to Pinckney as the study continued. As the study closed and the ending pray started Roof stood up and pulled out his Gl0ck 41 .45 calibre handgûn and began sh00ting. Killing Pinckney first. Then 26 year old Tywanza Sanders stood up to plead with Dylann before he said ‘I have to do it. You r4p3 our women and you’re taking over our country and you have to go’ he then wh0re and k!lled Sharonda Singleton, Dr. Daniel L. Simmons, Ethel Lee Lance, Cynthia Hurd, Myra Tompson and Tywanza Sanders. Dylann would reload 5 times that day. Polly Shepherd was spared when he asked her if he shot her yet to which she replied no he then told her ‘good cause we need someone to survive because I’m gonna sh00t myself and you’ll be the only survivor. He then turned the gûn on himself realizing he was out of ammo. He then left the church to the surprise there wasn’t anyone outside. The next day the police confirmed the gûnman was 21 year old Dylann Roof with witnesses reporting they saw him drive towards Shelby, a town close to Charleston. At 10:44am Roof was arrested at a traffic stop in Shelby where it was then confirmed he worked alone.

Five days after the sh00ting the grand jury announced that Roof was being indicted for 33 federal charges.

12 counts hate crime against black people

12 counts obstructing the exercise of religion

9 counts mûrd3r using a firearm.

On June 6th Roof reportedly did not want to be trialed by jury and instead let the judge decide if he was guilty and if the d3ath penalty was reasonable. August 23rd Roofs lawyers called the motion of d3ath penalty unconstitutional and asked to reject the motion. On September 1st an on camera hearing was held in case of outbursts. December 7th 2016 the trial started. During a survivor statement Roofs mom collapsed as she had a heart attack. After 3 days of the trial FBI played a video on which he admitted to laughing and drinking while describing to friends how he’d sh00t the church. To which his friend didn’t report to police and said he was drunk and took his keys and gl0ck that was on him. After 2 hours the jury found him guilty on all 33 charges. Roof wanting to plead guilty but told not to by lawyers.

January 10th 2027 Roof was sentenced to d3ath penalty, and d3ath by lethal injection.

I bet on losing dogs

Lee Haechan was born on June 6th, 2000. Making him exactly 3 months and 4 days younger than me. He is a Gemini. I used to tell him that this made him two faced, and he argued that it just made him more adaptable to different people, I couldn’t really fight him on it.

Lee Haechan was my first kiss, when we were 11 years old. He and I have been destined to be friends ever since the summer of 1994, when our moms were put together in their first college dorm. When I came out a girl, and he, a boy, our moms said nothing about it, but both secretly wished the same thing. We never told them about the day at the community pool, when they sent us both to get ice cream at the snack shack, and he had finished his ice cream while I sat, still working on my Popsicle. I told him I didn’t want to share, so he gave me a quick kiss - barely touching lips - and said that was enough to cool him off, before running off and jumping into the water, subsequently getting yelled at by the lifeguard. I sat still in shock until the feeling of my popsicle melting off the stick and falling onto my thigh jolted me.

Lee Haechan finally got the courage to ask me out when we were 16. He asked me to the prom, but I said no when I thought it was a joke. He pushed me, saying he was kidding anyway and I continued eating my lunch. Haechan told me later that he skipped 6th period to cry in the bathroom stalls like a little girl, I told him that he had every right to cry. At the time, when I got home my mom had asked if I was excited. When I asked for what, she explained that haechan’s mom had called to tell her what Haechan planned to do that day. I realized it wasn’t a joke. I ran the 6 blocks to his house and threw pebbles at his window when no one answered the door. I screamed yes when I caught a glimpse of life through the glass. Haechan peaked his head out just as I threw another pebble - it hit his eye, and he had to wear an eyepatch for prom, but I can still see his laugh as we danced, and that’s all that matters.

Lee Haechan made me promise to marry him when we were 18. He told me the day we were both 20, his birthday, he wanted to march down to the courthouse and sign the documents. I told him he was crazy, but indulged for fun and said yes. He got us rustic little rings at the farmers market.

Lee Haechan and I went to dinner on his 20th birthday. By then, I had forgotten about the proposal, and had the ring safety tucked away in a jewelry box. In retrospect, Haechan said it was better I wasn’t wearing a ring on that finger. Halfway through opening his gift from me, he said he wants to give me mine first. I was confused, until he started talking about how we were destined to be together, and he had loved me since he was 6 years old. He gets down on one knee. I don’t hear much of what he says after, I just yell “yes!” And start crying. The present I had gotten him was a watch, and left forgotten.

Lee Haechan married me 5 and 3 quarters of a month later. He was sweating like a turkey on thanksgiving, but I thought he was beautiful. He told me he thought the same about me. We barely ate anything at the wedding, and when I spilt McDonald’s ketchup on my wedding dress from my burger on the drive to our hotel, we both just laughed because we knew I’d never wear that dress again anyway. Our moms faces at the wedding made us laugh even more as we looked at pictures together, Both a blubbering mess, and one of them high-fiving. That made us laugh so much Haechan peed his pants.

At 21, Lee Haechan took me to the Van Gogh Museum for our one year anniversary. We were in awe of everything around us, and it was incredible. 19 minutes and 30 seconds in, Haechan turned me while starry night reflected on my face and the wall. He suddenly dropped on his knee and pulled out the promise ring from 4 years prior. In shock, I asked him what he thought he was doing. He ignored me and gave some half assed affirmations of his love before asking me to marry him. Even though I knew we were already married, I still got butterflies. My face was red enough to see even past the blue of the iconic painting of the night sky, and I just whispered a yes to get him off his knees. He loudly exclaimed that he couldn’t hear me, and it was then that I realized everyone was watching us. I quickly repeated yes louder and louder as he laughed and stood back up, placing the silver ring on top of my beautiful, actual wedding ring. Everyone clapped as we kissed, I smacked his arm. When I asked why the hell he did that, all he said was, “this exhibit is amazing, but I could not go 20 minutes without everyone seeing you and you not being the center of attention, and everyone not seeing how lucky I am.” I just stared at disbelief in him. He laughed and took a picture of my face before holding his arm out for me to take.

Lee Haechan was so many things.

He would intentionally stand behind me in every single line so he could draw words or symbols on my back, and if I didn’t guess them, he would pinch my cheek and call me silly.

He was a self proclaimed dog person. When I finally convinced him to get a cat, he said the cat and him would never be close, and it would just be mine. The cat and him ended up loving each other, and now the cat hates me.

He loved my little sister and she loved him. She was old enough to know married couples love each other, but young enough to ask if they could be married instead of him and me. He always said yes. When I would respond that I couldn’t believe this family betrayal, he would quote my favorite book and movie, Little Women, and respond, “I always knew I would marry into this family, Jo!” And I fell in love with him more every single time. I let my little sister have him for the day, because he is always going to be mine.

Lee Haechan is a lot of things,

He’s a cat owner.

He’s a gemini.

He makes music.

He’s mine.

I’m his.

He’s dead.

At 22, Lee Haechan is dead, and I am alone. I didn’t just lose a husband. I lost my best friend. My soulmate. My everything. The cat hates me, but looks for him around every corner, and lays in his side of the bed - she has gotten more used to me being there. I still feel his fingers on my back, tracing out the words “I love you”, I throw up. I feel his lips graze mine at the community pool, the coldness in my thighs wake me up. I feel his hands on mine at prom, my own hand lifting the eyepatch up as we both laugh. I hear his laughter in every Van Gogh painting I see. My sister asks for him, still too young to understand where her husband went. She asks me this, I tell her I don’t understand where her husband went either. We try to bring him back with our minds, it never works. My mom cradles me as I sob into her arms. His mom tries to reach out for comfort with me, but she has his eyes - I can never make it. I wear his wedding ring, it’s too big but I can’t seem to bring myself to go a day without it. I am 23. He is 22. I am 24. He is 22. I will be 70. He will be 22.

Lee Haechan is so many things. He is fire, he is water. He’s earth, he’s air. He will never be 23. I will always be his.

Getting the OH Appendix together and thought I’d share the timelines and fun facts I’ve put together over the course of writing the story.

I know there was some questions about the timeline and this is the one I put together to help myself out from chapter to chapter. (note: this probably isn’t without plot holes somewhere, so nothing is set in stone, and don’t be surprised if something changes like a birth year or anything like that)

Purposefully leaving the detailed Spring Break 1986 Timeline out as ehem… *spoilers* 😏

Main Timeline:

1978 - Meet at the Middle School Talent Show

1986 - Spring - Reconnect. Help Defeat Vecna. Get together. Chrissy moves out of her parents house and in with Eddie and Wayne. Graduate.

(March 27 - Escape Upside Down - Both in the hospital.

March 28 - Eddie offers for her to come live with him and Wayne.

March 29 - Eddie’s birthday in the hospital :(

March 30 - April 5 - Recovery in the hospital.

HEADS UP: MY VERSION OF FNAF STAYS VERY CLOSE TO CANON

I change some names, add on some details, throw out convoluted bullcrap, and add some parts that are my own.

William was born on October 14th, 1938. He was born to James and Helen Afton. James Afton died in 1944 in WW2. Hellen Afton died in 1994 of natural causes. 

Henry Emily was born on June 10th, 1941 to Edward and Dorthy Emily. Edward Emily passed away in 1995 to natural causes, his wife passed away a year later. 

William moved to America at 18 to go to college for engineering, there he met Henry and they formed a friendship. William met Elanor in 1957 and married her in 1959. Henry met Ruth in 1958 and married her in 1960. 

Ruth Davis was born on November 26th, 1941, to Kenneth and Florence Davis. Kenneth Davis passed away in 1975 to medical issues, Florence passed away in 2000 to natural causes.

Elanor Schmidt was born on February 15th, 1943 to Frank and Marie Schmidt. Frank Schmidt passed away in 1964 to medical issues, Marie Schmidt passed away in 1978 to natural causes.

William and Henry put their degrees to use to start a business and in 1964 the first Fredbears opened, a simple diner featuring Fredbear and Springbonnie. In 1966 after trying to upgrade the springlocks, William suffers a springlock accident but survives, scarring him. The springlocks are eventually perfected.

William and Elanor had their first child in 1969, Michael Afton. 

Fredbears becomes more successful, and eventually more locations are opened. 

Henry and Ruth had their only child in 1971, Charlie Emily. William and Elanors family expands, with Elizabeth Afton being born in 1976, and Evan Afton being born in 1977.

In 1978 William murders his wife with a sledgehammer. He disposes of her body in an unnamed location in the Utah desert. Due to them having marital issues the police don't find enough evidence to convict William and he is not incarcerated. He manipulates Michael into thinking Elanor left them due to her lack of love for them. 

1983, Evans 6th birthday is taking place in a Fredbears Diner. Due to him being terrified of the animatronics, Michael and his friends torment him and push him into the mouth of Fredbear. Evan starts crying, and the moisture from his tears cause the springlocks in Fredbear to activate and his mouth clamps shut, crushing Evans head in it. HE is rushed to the hospital and is put into an induced coma, he passes away 5 days later. 

Evans' death causes Williams mental health to drastically deteriorate, and he starts to abuse Michael more severely than before. William starts to theorize that Evan possessed Fredbear and his soul is in the animatronic. William starts to design different types of animatronics whose sole purpose is to capture children and kill them. A sister location is opened with these new types of animatronics. Elizabeth becomes infatuated with one of the animatronics, Baby based off of her. She obsesses over her, although William tells her to stay away from Baby. At the sister location Elizabeth disobeys her father and goes to Baby, who lures her in with icecream and ends up murdering her. William becomes even more distraught and abusive.

Henry, noticing the problems in his business partner's life and mental state, and proximity to horrific accidents, forces him to leave the company for his own good. He also secretly fears for his own daughter's safety. Henry designs an animatronic puppet to act as a watchguard for her.

One evening at the establishment the puppet ends up being barricaded in her box and Charlie is left out in the rain. William, who was the reason behind the puppets' entrapment, meets her outside, and kills her. He flees the scene. The puppet escapes her box and crawls outside, laying next to her body, she possesses the puppet. 

Despite overwhelming evidence William is not convicted. 

The restaurant in which this occured is shut down.

To expel rumors and allegations the Fredbears Brand is redesigned to Freddy Fazbears Pizzeria. New animatronic designs are made and new locations are opened up in 1987. William disguises himself as a security guard and murders five children, stuffing them into the animatronics. Cassidy is the first child murdered. She shares the suit with Evan.

Due to the murders the restaurant is about to be closed down, but one more party takes place, a security guard named Jeremy Fitzgerald is bitten in 1987. The location is shut down and William is arrested on speculation of the murders. HE is once again let go despite evidence pointing to him. 

In 1993 a new location is opened with the animatronics being refurbished. Michael ends up working there but is fired. At night, William enters the facility to disassemble the animatronics. HE is confronted by the spirits in them and they corner him in a backroom. HE puts on a spring bonnie suit to scare away the kids but the moisture of the room activates the springlocks and he gets painfully killed. He possesses the suit. 

After learning of Williams disappearance/ death Henry walls off back rooms in all of the locations under the guise of “budget cuts”

In 1995, Michael goes to the underground storage facility holding baby and the rest of the sister location animatronics to rectify his mistakes and find out more about his father. Baby and the rest of them manipulate Michael into helping them escape, and they end up leading him into the scooping room, scooping out his organs and killing him, baby  and the others congeal into one animatronic called ennard and enter michaels body. They use his body as an attempt to  conform to civilian life but it starts to rot and it expels ennard. Michaels soul possesses his own body, essentially becoming undead.

After being expelled, infighting causes baby to be removed from ennard due to her being Afton's daughter and refusing to kill Michael. She rebuilds herself and Ennard becomes Molten Freddy. 

30 years pass and the murders essentially become urban legend. In an effort to further dispel the rumors, a horror attraction is opened called fazbears fright. Michael starts working there to continue trying to find his father.  Springtrap is found and moved to the attraction as a prop. Michael and Springtrap fight and Michael sets the building ablaze. Afton escapes but MIchael captures  him and moves him cross country to Henry.  They plan to kill springtrap once and for all. Before Michael can deliver him to Henry, Springtrap escapes once again. 

Ina desperate attempt to end everything and tie up loose ends, Henry opens a location to try and lure everyone into it. It miraculously works and after scrap baby, ennard, springtrap, golden freddy and the puppet are trapped inside, Henry sets the place on fire with him inside it along with Michael to end everything once and for all. 

William is sent to Hell and cassidy, who is extremely malevolent to him, makes her own personal hell for him, she forces the childrens souls to stay there with her and torture him. Henry, who is portrayed as old man consequences, tells Cassidy to leave William to suffer by himself and let everyone go to heaven. She relents and lets everyone free. William stays in hell.

The Gliders

Note: I wrote this five years ago for a blog and it was even published in The Prairie Times in the September 2019 issue. Since today is the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, I thought this would be the perfect article to post in honor of it. God Bless the Greatest Generation!

Growing up, I heard my grandfather fought in WWII, but as a kid I really didn’t know in what capacity. My family knew the basics: he was in the ETO; at various points he was in Iceland, England, France, and Germany. He had medals and he was involved with the gliders. He rarely spoke of his service and on the off-chance he did, he was vague. On the 50th anniversary of June 6th (June 6, 1994) my grandfather was in the nursing home and his younger brother Allen came to visit him. The whole family was there.

Allen made an off-handed comment to him saying, “Well, Bud, you know where we were fifty years ago today.”

“Yeah, D-Day.” And my grandfather began to cry.

Nothing more was said.

Everyone knew better than to pry too much. He avoided flying and planes, and later in life, he suffered PTSD. When he passed, his secrets and experiences died with him. A couple of years later, the miniseries “Band of Brothers” was released and it renewed my family’s interest in Grandpa’s service in WWII. We went through his papers with a fine-tooth comb, rediscovered the medals and patches, and that he had both paratrooper and glider wings. Uncle Allen filled us on a few things. We were able to piece together a little of his story. Then, thanks to the internet, we were able to learn exactly what the gliders were and what their function during the war.

            The Germans were the first to use the gliders, in their invasion of France. In response to the German’s success, both America and British created their own versions. Nicknamed the “Flying Coffins,” a high-wind cabin aircraft, the gliders’ framing consisted of plywood and sometimes aluminum, and they were covered in canvas fabric. The glider would be connected to a C-47 aircraft, via a cable, and when both were air borne, the glider would be towed behind, “gliding” along. Without an engine and propellers, it flew silently and undetected by the enemy. The men, the “glider riders,” on the other hand, insisted it was extremely loud inside.

Depending on the type of glider, it would either be transporting fifteen men, or supplies, jeeps, and other equipment. When the glider was near its LZ (Landing Zone), it would be detached from the C-47 and it would crash land. Yes, you read that correctly: crash land. The survival rate wasn’t promising. It was suicidal, really. The glider pilots would have to navigate the engineless aircraft best they could, avoiding trees and stakes that had been erected by the enemy. Hopefully they’d land somewhere near the LZ. The gliders would also be under assault from the Germans. One testimony I heard was of a glider rider awaiting the glider’s detachment from the C-47, he was stunned when the laces on his boots suddenly stood on end. Numb from the adrenalin coursing through his veins, he later learned he had been shot in the foot. Following the crash landing, if the men survived, they would climb out of the glider and immediately enter into combat. Uncle Allen once told us that he had considered joining the airborne and asked my grandfather about it. Grandpa dissuaded him from it. He thought it was too dangerous for his younger brother.

The gliders were used in many major airborne operations throughout WWII: the invasion of Sicily, D-Day, Operation Market Garden, Operation Varsity, and in Operation Thursday in the Far East. In the various operations, the causalities were heavy. The gliders were instrumental during the war, and the glider riders proved themselves over and over again.

            After WWII, the gliders were discontinued in favor of the helicopter. In comparison with the paratroopers, the glider riders involved were largely forgotten. There are books out there for those who want to do more in depth research, but more often than naught, the gliders are relegated to a footnote in the history books. Or a small mention on a documentary.

Looked down by many, including the paratroopers, they weren’t issued jump boots, and it wasn’t until July 1944 that they “earned” their right to wear glider wings and receive hazard-duty pay. During WWII, eventually most men were drafted into the military, but to be a “glider rider,” it was voluntary. The strongest and the best persevered against all odds. Why and how could these young men – including my grandfather – do such a dangerous, and in many cases, thankless job?

            In my opinion, only the deepest and strongest patriotism could have emboldened them…Along with the fact that they were young and away from their homes for the first times in their lives. The gliders were something relatively new, untested, and risky. It was an adventure like no other and in the end the young men played their part in fighting against evil.
