THE SILENT TWINS (2022) dir. Agnieszka Smoczyńska
"I am immune from sanity or insanity. I am an empty present box; all unwrapped for someone else's disposal. I am a thrown away eggshell, with no life inside me, for i am not touchable, but a slave to nothingness." -June Gibbons

June & Jennifer Gibbons were born on April 11, 1963, and grew up in Wales. They became the subject of books as "The Silent Twins" due to their choice to communicate only with each other, in their own language. They wrote brilliant works of fiction but were convicted of arson and were committed to Broadmoor Hospital for 11 years. Prior to their release in 1993, they informed the CEO that Jennifer would have to die, "to allow June to be free." On that very day, Jennifer died suddenly at aged 29.

I completely understand them. I related to this story for years before she died. I feared that our overly close relationship would end in some tragic way. Yet the potential liberation from constant trauma, if it were to somehow happen, the opportunity to perhaps move on to "a normal life".... The incredible cost of having to live with the grief of having lost your other half. the knowing that maybe it couldn't have been any other way, that the world was always going to play out this way. The loss and change at the same time.
I feared it and did everything that my mind/capacity could allow at the time, to make anything else happen. But this story that I read one day sat as a sadness in the back of my memory.
I tok it more metaphorically, imagining that I would move away and this would happen, in a form. A healthy separation. Not one forced by tragedy.
There was always some strange relief in reading and knowing that someone else had gone through something similar...a similarly deep bond, that yet also tainted their lives with pain and strife. Something worth fighting for -- for the SURVIVAL of. And yet leading to its own crash and burn, almost inevitably, because of the intensity of it.
Am i folkloring and rhapsodising? If I am, I was before it happened, then, too.

June Gibbons (born 11 April 1963[2]) and Jennifer Gibbons (11 April 1963 – 9 March 1993) were identical twins who grew up in Wales. They became known as "The Silent Twins", since they only communicated with each other. They wrote works of fiction. Both women were admitted to Broadmoor Hospital, where they were held for 11 years.

“For those outside of neurodiverse families, we remain the ‘weird’ ones, oddities, people it is uncomfortable to know, often ‘problem’ families, with ‘issues’ too difficult to solve.
For those of us within them, what we need is clear: personalised, compassionate, individualised support.
A lack of judgement. Understanding. Wider knowledge that autistic and neurodivergent people aren’t ‘difficult’ so much as different, with needs, sometimes challenging, sometimes less so, which once understood, are not potentially always that difficult to meet – just different from accepted social norms.”

Live Review: Beth Gibbons / Bill Ryder-Jones at The Albert Hall in Manchester 10 June 2024
Words: Ben Forrester Now, the life of an amateur journalist can be non-stop my friends; me and the Birthday gang are out and about as much as we can, reviewing shows so you don’t have to! So it’s always nice when a show comes along that ticks all the right boxes in terms of venue, billing and timing (and also impresses your wife that you’ve got list for it). Tonight we are at The Albert Hall,…
