Sondra Geller: Making Art in the Presence of the Analyst

Art therapy uses fundamental art techniques to help the client gain access to deeply seated unconscious material, very much like the work with dreams Jung talks about so much. So art therapy is a way in, a way in to the dream time. 

The client is guided into that process. The other aspect of that that is very important is that the art therapist analyst serves as the guide, the witness, to the process. I could go on for hours talking about how important that is, and what it’s like - especially if it’s an adult seeking Jungian art therapy - what it’s like to draw in the presence of another. When do we have an opportunity to do something like that? Probably not since childhood. And there are dynamics that arise between analyst and client from being the one to being in the position of being observed. It replicates often the early parent child relationship and the analyst is able to hold the client symbolically in the eyes, the caring eyes, of the other.

First we must ask ourselves, "How much free will does the ego we are talking to have?" Then, at any given time, we must also ask ourselves the related question: "To whom are we speaking?" The fact that the person is in front of us, and looking at us, and may even be smiling, does not necessarily mean we are speaking to the ego. We may be speaking to a complex; we may be speaking to the shadow, to the anima or animus, or even to the Self or some combination. Even in the course of an interchange the energy to which we are speaking, the "who," can fluctuate.

What Jungians have, but it probably needs to be strengthened, is faith. We place our faith in the Self, in the psyche. In this sense when we sit down with a patient and conduct analysis, we believe that the answers to the patients' questions will emerge out of the dialogue, out of their inner world, out of their dreams. That's an act of faith. And I think that needs to be very solidly stressed in the training program. The analyst doesn't have the answers, what you have is faith that the answers will come. Otherwise you couldn't conduct analysis. You know you don't have the answers. But you have faith that they will emerge, out of the process, out of the psyche.

A second expedient is the analysis of dreams; this is the real instrument of psychoanalysis. We have already experienced so much opposition to dream analysis that a brief exposition of its principles may not be out of place. The interpretation of dreams, as well as the meaning given to them, is, as we know, in bad odour. It is not long since oneiromancy was practised and believed in; nor is the time long past when even the most enlightened persons were still under the spell of superstition. It is therefore comprehensible that our age should still entertain a lively fear of superstitions that have been only partially overcome. This nervousness in regard to superstition is largely responsible for the opposition to dream-interpretation, but psychoanalysis is in no way to blame for this. We select the dream as an object not because we pay it the homage of superstitious admiration, but because it is a psychic product that is independent of consciousness.
