possibly a fic of percy and annabeth with annabeths family, or ive always been curious about annabeths athena siblings, obviously she has to be very close to them(not just malcolm) and I think it'd be sweet to see their reaction to percabeth
*Tried to work in both lol hope you enjoy it!*
Annabeth had been nervous about this visit home. Things had gotten better between her and her mortal family over the last few years, but it could still sometimes be awkward. She'd probably be less nervous if she was on her own. But Percy was with her. And it was the first time she was bringing him to her dad's house as her boyfriend. Which seemed crazy, now that they'd been together almost two years and were at their last stop on their way to Camp Jupiter and New Rome University. But the last couple of years had been pretty hectic, especially with Gaea rising and Percy being kidnapped for six months. Plus, it was still a risk for Percy to fly, which made it tricky to get him across the country. So now here they were, driving the Prius down the street to her dad's house. And she was bringing her boyfriend to her family's house. Annabeth tapped her fingers against the car door, trying not to let her nerves show. She wasn't even sure why she was nervous. Her dad and stepmom had met Percy before. They'd just seen him a few weeks ago at graduation. But this felt different.
She flashed back to two years ago at Camp Half-Blood, after she and Percy had first gotten together. Once they'd climbed out of the lake and said good night, she'd crossed the green to the Athena cabin, unable to keep a huge smile off her face. However, when she opened the door of Cabin Six, a massive noise hit her, causing her to nearly jump out of her skin. It took her a few moments to gather herself and realize that it was her siblings, cheering and whooping for her.
"Oh my gods," she said, once she realized what was going on. "Are you all serious?"
Malcolm was the first to come forward and clap her on the shoulder, although he was definitely not the only one with a massive grin on his face. "We're just really happy that you're happy," he told her. "And we just also want you to know that if you're ever not happy with Jackson, we will be happy to help you come up with a plan to end him."
"Oh my gods," Annabeth said again, trying to roll her eyes, but she was pretty sure she was blushing to the roots of her hair. "I don't think you'll have to worry about that. But thanks anyway."
Her other siblings came up to her, too, giving her hugs and fist bumps and handshakes. Some of the younger ones hugged her especially hard, and Annabeth knew it wasn't just because they were happy for her. It had been a hard week. Really, it had been a hard summer. And she suspected they were glad to have an excuse to get some reassurance. So she returned their hugs tightly and tried not to think about the campers whose bunks were now empty.
She could always count on her siblings in the Athena cabin to support her. She was less sure about how Matthew and Bobby would react. Truthfully, she was a little worried they were going to be rude or ask Percy weird questions or something. Not to mention what her dad and stepmom might do or say.
As it turned out, she shouldn't have worried. Her dad gave them both one of the warmer greetings she'd ever received from him, including an extra long hug that made Annabeth swallow hard to avoid choking up. Her stepmom also smiled and hugged her, then Percy, and welcomed them both into the house.
Matthew and Bobby's greeting was pretty standard for Annabeth but almost too enthusiastic for Percy. They immediately started asking him questions about fighting monsters. Then Matthew blurted out, "Is it true that your pen turns into a sword?"
Percy glanced at Annabeth, then at Mrs. Chase. But her stepmom only gave a small smile and a nod, then said, "Just go out in the backyard." Percy shot Annabeth a quick smile, then all three boys disappeared out the back door.
"Thanks again for letting us stay for a couple days," Annabeth said. "The dorms won't be ready for move in until after the weekend. Something about summer semester."
"You're always welcome, Annabeth," her stepmom said. She frowned, then said, "I know it hasn't always felt that way to you. And I'm sorry for that. But you are welcome here any time."
Her dad nodded. "This is your home, too, honey. Now that you're out here, I hope…I hope we'll get to see you a little more?"
He'd ended it on a question, giving her the opportunity to choose. Not so long ago, Annabeth might have scoffed, or shot back a harsh remark. Now, though, after all the things she'd been through, especially last summer, she found she didn't have it in herself to respond that way. They were trying. And she was willing to try again, too. A fresh start for all of them.
"I appreciate that," Annabeth said truthfully. "I'll try my best."
"We will, too," her dad replied. After a moment of awkward silence, he clapped his hands. "Now, Annabeth, if you have a minute, I was wondering if you might look at a project I'm working on. I've been trying to recreate a wing joint that mimics those pegasi wings, but I keep running into a hiccup—"
Twenty minutes later, Annabeth escaped into the backyard to join Percy, although she had managed to have a pretty enjoyable conversation with her dad about aerial stability and the flight mechanics of rotating joints. When she stepped out onto the back porch, she narrowly managed to avoid being sprayed by a jet of water.
"Hey!" she yelped, dodging out of the way.
"Sorry, babe!" Percy called. He was standing in the middle of the yard with the hose in his hand. Riptide was no longer anywhere to be seen, but he was now making the water do crazy shapes and powerful bursts, which Matthew and Bobby seemed to find supremely entertaining.
"Okay, but seriously, you can't get it higher than that tree over there, can you?" Bobby asked.
Percy smirked. "Challenge accepted."
As a skinny jet of water shot thirty feet into the air, Percy glanced over at Annabeth with a smile. She returned it, feeling grateful that things were going well. It made her hopeful for the next few years of their life in California. It was nice to know that the different parts of her family could get along.

My thoughts on how the Milgram mv machine works based on the evidence we have:
(I know there’s been discussion about where exactly the interrogations take place, but wherever they are,) the prisoners are made to sit in a specific chair near the wall that houses the machine.
It’s ordinarily hidden, but the wall panels shift aside to reveal it when the mechanical sounds play in the dramas. As well as the walls moving, the chair transforms to restrain the prisoner and attach whatever it takes to access their brain. The fact that none of the more frightened prisoners try to run or break it makes it seem like they physically cannot. This is why Fuuta sounds so panicked, and why Amane is suddenly helpless in front of Es in their T1 vds.
(My mind conjures very classic sci-fi mad scientist machines with wires, pipes, lights, nodes, needles, etc, but I’d love to hear how other people visualize it.)
In some vds (maybe all? I’d need to check,) you can hear Es take some steps right before their iconic line -- it would make sense that for safety reasons, the power mechanism is placed across the room. Once again it could be anything, but the sound effect makes me think of one of those giant wall-mounted levers you have to pull down.
The voice dramas don’t really provide the type of crime details that an actual interrogation would reveal, and it’s odd that they’re placed before the extraction rather than after Es gets to see the new details. This leads me to believe the machine functions with priming. All Es needs to do is get them talking about their murder, so it’s on their mind.
The video produced is much like a (non-lucid) dream. Even if the prisoners figure out that this is how it works, they can’t control it just by thinking really hard about something else. The murders produce the strongest emotional affect, and that’s what it picks up on. If someone else used the machine, it would default to whatever gave them the strongest emotional reaction in the ~15 minutes beforehand, hence why Es’ video focuses on their daunting task ahead. (The Undercover theory is still a bit loose, though, given the private shots that Es wouldn't have known about). It’s why the videos are usually closely linked to the vd topics/beats. I also like to think that the reason their prisoner colors appear so much is because they’re looking at those colors on their uniform 24/7.
The bell rings to inform Es that it’s the optimal time to use the machine -- the prisoner has been thinking about things for long enough that the video will be about their crime, and if the conversation lasts much longer they’ll start thinking of other things. It’s at a different time for each prisoner because it’s based on the specific conversation. I guess Jackalope is listening in to the interrogation, timing it perfectly. (The only one that kind of messes with this theory is Yonah, because they just keep talking afterwards lol, but it could just show that the interrogation is still in Es’ control.)
Their “Sing your sins” is the final priming nudge to get them to think of their actions as a sin, revealing their guilt.
Once activated, the prisoner enters a sort of trance/sleeping state. It’s very much like REM sleep, with the machine forcibly activating neurons and recording the output. The prisoners have asked Es what they saw, meaning they don’t remember the mvs. I like to think the prisoners do experience the mv in real time, acting as the major version of themself that appears, but can’t remember it afterwards. It’s when you experience a dream, but as soon as you wake up you’re just left with fleeting emotions and memories right on the tip of your tongue.
The video plays immediately upon extraction -- whether on a huge projection or little screen depends on which room it’s in. It simultaneously saves the memory so that Es can rewatch it later (on those old TVs in the jailbreak mix). The machine downloads the song and video together, but requires special parts to retrieve them. The technology is pretty new and fragile, so if one is broken, there might be a delay between when Es can hear the extracted song and see it with the video. (That’s my justification for Kotoko’s delays -- after 9 prisoners the parts wear out, or maybe Mikoto himself overheats it with his complex situation.)
Based on the lack of conversation we get afterwards, I picture Es leaving before the prisoner wakes from the trance. The machine adjusts their brain back to normal before they awaken, restraints freed and able to return to the rest of the prison.
It’s very much like a dream, so it’s not harmful despite the amnesia/head injuries the prisoners have. It does, however, exhaust them. Brain activity alone takes a lot of energy, so forced brain activity with added emotional strain would cause them to feel pretty drained the rest of the day.

So it just occurred to me that all the anti-Monokuma ‘weapons’/electrobombs have Miu’s cartoon mouse symbol plastered on them, and Monokuma is *afraid* of mice. I don’t know why it took so long for me to piece that fun little detail together (maybe because the fear of mice is only really mentioned in SDR2??) but, huh. That’s pretty neat actually.

The surreal nature of this show keeps catching me by surprise, but this was the first time I was genuinely disturbed by the implications of a throwaway gag.

He might not be a fighter in this life, but he definitely has the soul of a fighter.
Or: Five once-gods are reborn in mortal bodies but still have divine souls and some heretics and wannabe-gods might wanna capitalize on that... and the once-Bishops are not the warriors they once were. But that doesn't mean they can't be again :)
Also seeing Narinder without his head covering, yes he has a sun and moon piercing. Wonder why he felt compelled to get those <3
(where did Narinder get a scythe? Where did he get one he could actually carry? Hmm )

hey, could you make one of estelle finding out that percy and annabeth are demigods? thank u so much i love your works <3
*Okay, I kind of struggled with this one because I don’t feel like they’d hide it from her. I feel like it would be one of those things she’s always known.  So, after a lot of thinking, I finally came up with this.  Hope you enjoy!* Also, reminder, still closed to prompts, just catching up on a few old ones I hadn't gotten to yet.*
Demigods
It happened during spring break of his freshman year of college.  Percy had come home to New York, catching a ride with Hazel on Arion, since she was visiting Camp Half-Blood as part of the two camps’ exchange program.  Hazel was going to be spending a week at the Greek camp and Malcolm Pace was going to be at Camp Jupiter for a week.  Annabeth had stayed in New Rome to work on a project for one of her architecture classes and to hang out with her demigod brother, who she hadn’t seen in a while.  Percy had to admit he could understand the appeal, since the main reason he’d wanted to go to New York for a week was to hang out with Estelle.
His one-year-old sister was thrilled to see him.  She squealed, patted his face, grabbed his nose, tugged on his ears and hair, and slobbered all over his cheeks and chin in an attempt to give him kisses.  Basically, it was an awesome greeting.
The next day, he volunteered to take Estelle to a nearby park, to give his mom and Paul a break.  The first part was fun.  He pushed Estelle on the swing, grinning back at her when she gave him a drooly, three-toothed smile, her chubby legs kicking excitedly.  Then he sat her on his lap to go down the slide.  Estelle squealed so loudly that at first he was afraid she was scared, but then he realized she was laughing.
So they went down the slide about seven more times.
Everything was going well.  Percy was having a great day with his baby sister.  Even the weather was cooperating; it was a sunny, warm, early spring day, the trees just starting to be touched by green.
And then, as they turned the corner a few blocks from their apartment, Percy pushing Estelle in her stroller, he froze.
Skulking in an alleyway, flexing their muscles, were two Laistrygonian ogres.  For one moment, Percy thought maybe he could slowly back away unseen.
And then their eyes fell on him.  One glared, one grinned, and both pushed away from the alley wall and started moving towards him.
Percy cursed in his head, even as he reached for Riptide and, in the same move, stepped in front of Estelle in her stroller.
“Hey, guys,” Percy said, trying to keep his voice casual even as he palmed Riptide, still in pen form.  “How’s it going?”
“Better now, Perseus Jackson,” one of the Laistrygonians rumbled.  “Babycakes and I have been hoping you would reappear.”
Percy cursed out loud this time as he realized it was one of the ogres who had attacked him years ago during gym class.  And, apparently, the monster’s girlfriend, who was still glaring at Percy.
“Do you know how annoying it was to have to wait for Joe Bob to reform?” Babycakes crossed her meaty arms, which were tattooed as thoroughly as her boyfriend’s.
“Probably really annoying,” Percy agreed.  “Sorry about that.  Anyway, great to see you all again, I’ll just be on my way—”
“I don’t think so, Perseus Jackson.”  Joe Bob grinned, showing his crooked, stained teeth.  “We were just trying to decide what to do for lunch.  And then here you are.”
“And you brought a baby,” Babycakes cooed.  “I love babies.”
Percy’s skin crawled.  His own voice came out like a growl.  “No one touches my sister.”
The Laistrygonians laughed and prepared to charge.  They never got the chance.  The moment they threatened Estelle, rage rose like a red hot wave in Percy’s chest.  With a metallic shink, Riptide appeared in his hands.  He leapt forward and, in two swift swipes, he dispatched the giants.  They barely had time to look surprised before bursting into piles of monster dust.
“Enjoy Tartarus,” Percy muttered.  It wasn’t something he’d normally say, after having been there himself, but he didn’t have any sympathy for monsters that threatened his sister.
Behind him, Estelle gurgled.  Percy turned to look at her, Riptide still in his hands.  Estelle was smiling and drooling as she chewed on her hand.  When she saw him looking at her, she squealed happily and held out her arms.  Percy scanned the street, but when he didn’t see any additional threats, he capped his sword, slipped the pen back in his pocket, and reached down to unbuckle Estelle from her stroller.  His hands were shaking when he picked her up.  She didn’t seem to notice.  Instead, she babbled and patted his face.  Percy managed a smile.  “Come on, Estelle.  Let’s get home before we run into any other problems.”
His mom and Paul were still out when Percy and Estelle got home.  His little sister started to whine as soon as they got in the door, so after Percy had shut, and locked, it, he bounced her on his hip, which she usually liked.  But Estelle wasn’t having it right now.  So Percy changed his hold until he was cradling her against his shoulder.  Estelle nuzzled her face against his shoulder and one small hand gripped his shirt as she continued to whine.  Percy patted her back, then, cuddling her against his chest, headed to the kitchen to make her a bottle.
After she fell asleep while drinking her bottle, Percy stayed on the couch, just holding her for a while.  Even though he’d dispatched the monsters easily enough, the fact remained that, just for a minute, his baby sister, his fully mortal baby sister, had been in danger.  Because of him.  And that wasn’t a good feeling.
Finally, Percy stood up, Estelle fast asleep in his arms, and carried her to her crib.  Giving her a featherlight kiss on the forehead, he laid her down and tucked her in.  Then he headed across the hall to the bathroom and closed the door.  Sitting on the edge of the tub, he turned on the shower and used his powers to arc the water, letting it catch the rays of late afternoon sunlight coming through the window, creating a rainbow.  Tossing in a drachma, he said, “Oh Iris, goddess of the rainbow, accept my offering.  Show me Annabeth Chase at New Rome University.”
The rainbow shimmered.  A few moments later, Annabeth appeared.  Luckily, she was alone, sitting at her desk in her dorm room, absorbed in sketching.  The sunlight coming through the window made her blonde hair glow.  Percy watched her for a moment, already feeling a little better.  But finally, when she didn’t look up, he said, “Hey.”
Annabeth jumped.  When she saw him, though, an easy smile crossed her face.  “Hey, Seaweed Brain.”  The smile faded, though, as she studied his face.  “What’s wrong?”
“Had a little bit of a run-in with some Laistrygonians.”  He told Annabeth about what had happened, how he’d been on his way back from the park with Estelle, how the monsters had surprised him, how he’d dispatched them with no problem, but how he couldn’t get rid of the sick feeling in his stomach quite as easily.
“I just—” Percy ran a shaky hand over his face and through his hair, “I just can’t get past the fact that Estelle was in danger because she was with me.”
Annabeth tilted her head, as if thinking.  Her gray eyes were intense as she’d listened to his story, but now they softened as she said, “I have a slightly different take on it.  I’d say Estelle was never really in danger because she was with you.”
Percy shook his head.  “That sounds good, but it’s not true.  If they’d gotten the jump on me or something—”
“Percy.”  Annabeth’s voice was a little more stern.  She leaned forward on her desk, closer to the I-M.  “You once blew up a volcano.  Not to mention lots of plumbing over the years.  You don’t think you could blow up a New York City water main to wipe out some monsters if Estelle was in danger?”
Percy took a leaf out of her book and rolled his eyes.  “Well, yeah, probably, but that’s not—”
“That’s exactly the point, Seaweed Brain.”  Annabeth’s expression was earnest as she locked eyes with him.  “I’m not letting you beat yourself up about this one.  Could something potentially happen to Estelle that would be absolutely out of your control?  Yes, possibly.  But would you do literally everything in your power to keep her safe?  Absolutely.  And you have a lot of power to call on, Percy.  More than you even recognize sometimes.  Your little sister is as safe with you as she’s going to be with anybody.  Trust me.  I know you.”
Percy blinked hard and cleared his throat.  “Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Yeah, okay.”  He managed a smile at his girlfriend.  “I believe you.”
“Good.”  Annabeth returned his smile.  “I am sorry that happened, though.  It sounds like a scary moment.”
“It did scare me,” Percy admitted, running his hand through his hair again.  He exhaled.  “Just more to lose, you know?”
“I know.”  Annabeth raised her hand, just barely touching the Iris-message, so that it looked like her fingers were melting into the rainbow.  Percy raised his hand to hers and it almost seemed like their palms were touching, even three thousand miles apart.
Naturally, Estelle chose that moment to start fussing from her crib across the hall.
“Uh-oh,” Percy said.  “That might be my cue.”
“Give her a kiss for me.  I love you.”  Annabeth blew him a kiss.  “Enjoy your visit, babe.  It’s going to be okay.”
“Thanks, Wise Girl.  Love you, too.”
Percy did feel better, even as he swiped through the I-M and Annabeth’s image faded.  He turned off the shower, then headed across the hall to Estelle’s room.  She was standing up in her crib, hair nap-mussed, whining around her pacifier.  But when she saw him, her entire tiny face lit up and her pacifier nearly fell out as she smiled.  Percy felt a pang in his chest, but it wasn’t a bad feeling.
“Hey, Estelle,” he said as he crossed the room to scoop her up.  “Good nap?”
She burbled happily to him and Percy couldn’t help grinning.
He kissed one of her chubby cheeks.  “That one’s from Annabeth.”  Then he kissed the other.  “And that’s from me.  I love you, Estelle.  And I’m always going to protect you.  Don’t worry about that.”
His baby sister tugged on his ear and squealed.  Percy figured she got the message.
“Let’s check out the kitchen,” he told her.  “I think there’s a jar of mashed carrots with your name on it.”
He kissed the top of her head as he carried her down the hall.  Annabeth was right, he couldn’t totally control every situation.  But he would always do everything in his power to keep his little sister safe.

I think it's so interesting to think about the unique social implications of things on the islands. Like, the animal hats & how they originally existed for the practical purpose of protection & they kept wearing them even after that wasn't a factor anymore. & how the hats we see in the present day (when Finn & co visit the islands) don't really resemble animal hats, do they? & maybe that's just to make the significant human characters (who do still wear animal hats) seem more distinct but you best believe I'm going to make it into something bigger. Oh I'm so bad at putting my thoughts into words but it's something how the hats evolved into a new meaning. & when robo susan rips friedas hat off its like a very violating moment. Something something hats, the lack thereof, vulnerability. I don't know. Sorry. I was going somewhere with this but I don't know how to explain it. You get it though. Hats are interesting.
I like to think that (when everyone got sick and lots of them died and the rest moved to a new island) there was a bunch of small shifts & the animal -> abstract hats was one of them. And Frieda still wearing her dog hat shows her still holding onto the past in some way. There we go, that's something. This isn't a total nothing post after all

depression is really weird actually wdym i spent 2.5 years of my life in bed
#and wdym that lifestyle changed so quickly into being out and about and an active member of the world??#very proud of myself#and i mean it wasn't that quick of a change#it was like 1.5 years primarily depression bedrotting with occasional school -> primarily depression bedrotting ->#primarily depression bedrotting with 3-9 hours of work weekly -> straight into 31+ hours school+9-12 hours work weekly#so there was somewhat of a gradual progression#but still#also wowza i wake up 7-7:30am every morning now. 1pm was an early wake up for a not so insignificant amount of time#i mean of all fundamental growth years to miss out on the ages like what 12/13-15 aren't too bad? they would suck in a different way if i#had been socially involved#anyway it's just. yea i'm proud of myself but it is a crazy lifestyle change#and even when i was deeply depressed in a horrible routine i feel like i learned a lot. how to regulate my emotions and cope well and find#the joy in everything. bc if i stayed in bed all day then i would at least be happy about the sun or whatever#and for the while of being not at school at all i WANTED to be at school i just could not find one bc our school system is so cute like tha#(basically every school is at capacity and the local school that has a guaranteed place for me would have been an all boys or girls 😭)#but i miraculously found and got into this school and miraculously made it work so well for me socially and now academically#it's also a good time to get back into school for my education bc any later and it woulda been pretty bad for all my certifications and uni#ive missed out on so much maths that its not worth it to me to try and catch up but my teacher knows that#but ive always hated maths regardless i only ever understood it for the first half of yr 7 then my attendance dropped#and after my recent exam i decided to try harder at school. but i still got an A on the exam i didn't study for!! academic weapon fr#i'm just idk thinking back to myself in the past few years#and how hopeless it all felt. but i got out of it!! i beat the depression and social anxiety and found a good place and made the most of it#and during the peak of my depression i remember i went out someplace near my old school and panicked so so badly about seeing#kids from my old school. and the friends at the time didnt really check on me when i went to shake and cry in a side street lmao#i kept the best of that friendgroup and have better friends now. but anyway now i take a bus each morning with some kids from my old school#and you see these hands? they look like they're shaking to you?#anyway yeah it's just cool i got to this point :) i really had no hope for so long but now i have a life i'm living and a future i'm build#--ing towards#which is funny i just decided some random day last november after watching some better call saul 'huh actually lawyer would b pretty cool'#and will i get there? we'll see but i do have hope now

Halsin's mom called him "arivae" (sunlight - also very close to "aravae" which is like great joy), because he was a generally happy elfling and was already smiling soon after he was born - a ray of sunshine, if you will.
His father - strange of him, being the more serious of the two - would reach back on particularly infantile terms like "nìnì" (little one), or shorten his name to "tō" (baby or little) when in an affectionate mood. The irony is not lost on him - especially when he starts hitting his growth spurt around 15, and it's partially a tongue in cheek term of endearment in that way. But it's more because...he was his youngest son - his little guy, you know? He will always be that, no matter how big he gets.
(And it does mean more when you think that, as Halsin started growing, even being the same age as his peers and the same learning and maturity level, you would occasionally have the mistaken assumption that he was older - more grown up; that there was an expectation for him to be. But his father used to motion to his chest and temple and casually remark that he was still little where it mattered.)

ohhhh you should talk about the crazy family unit. hank karen becca mia and ... bill? (i cannot remember that man's name lol) or just mia & karen 🥹 whatever you feel ahaha
not you can’t remember the human dial-tone’s name 😭😭😭😭 he’s so absent in that family that he’s defined by it…what stands out to me about bill though is his status as A Father, to the point that we don't see him until he's Mia's Dad. he isn't in the pilot. and hank doesn't know (for plot?? reasons?? i guess??) that he has kids until the pilot, when karen says that becca is out with bill's daughter. even though they've lived with bill and mia for months (a year?) at that point.
by the time the audience sees bill for the first time, he's not just karen's boring "captain fantastic" fiancé- he's mia's dad. and his first scene on the show is annoying hank with parenting advice and trying to relate to him over having daughters.
so in a way, as much as the show wants to portray bill as the anti-hank (and as much as karen wants to latch onto that), they are characterized extremely similarly in a narrative sense...they both exist only in their relationship to the same 3 characters: karen, becca, and mia.
(i'm reminded of duchovny saying on a podcast that the world of californication was run by women)
and they both exist within this family in this odd awkward dynamic, where these kids need to be parented and neither of them are as present as they want to be.
what fascinates me about the relationship between hank and bill is that these are two men who see each other as rivals and who hate each other, but who are ultimately both just fathers and do have to be open to and rely on each other at times...and watch each other interact with and influence their girls…moments like when bill calls becca "honey" at dinner and everyone winces and looks at hank. bill going over to hank's apartment to ask him to please speak at mia's school, because he has to go out of town and can't do it. mia telling becca that it's only fun when she's around to "conspire against the parental units." they have this inevitable presence around each other's children. (hank having passed out at the house, coming down the stairs in bill's borrowed clothes, mia handing him the paper)
and when bill leaves town after the wedding, he leaves his daughter in LA to be effectively parented by karen and hank. and yea that's bonkers crazy and we could talk for days about how dangerously negligent and ridiculous the human dial-tone is but that's what happened

they're regularly going over to the house to check on her, having her over at their family dinners, inviting her to their parties, convening with each other about her behaviors and safety, taking responsibility for the people who interact with her, looking in on her at school
and they're...more attentive and involved than bill was. (look at my parental figures dawg i'm gonna throw myself off a hotel balcony)

and mia eats it up!! she microdoses having a grown-up give af about her!! same girl who told karen that her dad doesn't care about her whereabouts before going out to meet a "significantly older" guy at a bar. she starts going to her teacher's nasty apartment to do coke only after hank tells her to be careful around that guy. she starts a sexual relationship with lew ashby, watches hank and karen lose their shit over it, then tells hank she was just "yanking his chain." in the first vlog she alludes to calling hank and telling him she's in trouble "just fucking with him."

and she did nothing wrong <3

as far as the relationship between karen and mia goes you honestly need another post to unpack All That….it’s hard to mother a dead woman’s baby. then watch her stand up at your wedding and beg her father not to do it. to sit in a courtroom years later and listen to her tearfully explain her anger towards you, how much grief her father was “burying.”
Tumblr media
but she did mother her and that’s so difficult, even painful, for everyone...like my post on becca and mia and how kind of tragic it is, the way that they were "sisters" but only for a little while. like searching for protection and comfort in a man who will stand trial for harming you.
there are a few really enduring and reliable constants that this show rests on, and mia just isn't one of them. her family, her stability, her well-being, her home and individuality. it's all kind of fraught and wildly fluctuating. but for a little while, people tried.
