i just got one of those "one year ago today" notifications and one year ago i was working my last few days as a fisheries technician, i had just signed my grad school offer letter, and i had two island jobs lined up for the summer, one ta-ing a course on marine mammals and one working at an evironmental science camp.

i just can't even fathom that that was only a year ago because i feel like i've lived at least two years between then and now. now i'm eight months into my masters, planning my thesis, going back to ta that course again this summer, and starting to think about phd programs. applying for grad school again scares me a lot but when i think about where i was one or two years ago i couldn't imagine being here now. i'm so excited to see where i'll be next year :)

Unfair... i think its quite normal that k gets criticized when she pretents to care for the planet, but in actuality has not in her 33 y of age made a single evironmentally friendly decision. She claims to support ocean clean up but in reality is just selling yet another product and pushing people towards more mass consumption. Has anyone ever heard k say anything? The only opinions she ever put out where political popullistic ideas that insulted politicians and discriminated against and minorities. In every interview she gives an endless list of privileges but doesnt seem to even be aware that this are privileges she has. If ever someone sees k accomplish something for herself or just say something nice and likeable, let me know. Then again she doesnt need to be anything for the public. //Sometimes I feel like people are a bit unfair to wags.

My dad and uncle keep looking at properties in rural Ontario and striaght up I would rather fuckin die. When I said I hated the suburbs this si NOT what I mean. I want walkable small cities. Lots of local arts and restaurants. Tons of green spaces. Community gardens. Culture and libraries and things to do. I've BEEN to the town they keep looking at and there isn't even a public library. It's entirely white people and majority super conservative. I can't get any good food there. No where to shop. My university had SIGNIFICANTLY more students than the entire population of the area. What the fuck what the fuck

I know I will not be moving and this is probably just them talking shit but like. Stop shoving it in my face esp when I'm visibly uncomfortable and asked them to stop forcing me to discuss it. I want walkable small cities where I can grow some vegetables and go to local productions. Not....that. I'm already beyond isolated and you want me to go to a place like that??? It may be good for some ppl, not for me. I can barely last a week in my dad's town without wanting to kill someone.

This is so stupid but I walked in the door after work already worn out and upset despite getting off early on Friday for summer hrs and they were like. Surprise. Do this. We're serious. I'm too tired for this

It's so stupid to be upset about bc even if it does happen and my mother is convinced it won't be before I get permanent work and can leave but I am so tired this is the last straw. I am going to make a drink even tho it is not yet 4pm.

Ooohh good catch on the unit thing!! I’m a planetary science grad and that kind of thing REALLY has an impact! My bf (also in the field) found a published paper whose findings don’t actually hold because there was a unit issue and that paper had to retract and rework some of their material. But better late than never!

Haha thanks. Yeah units can be a pain, I cant imagine how many mistaken publications are out there. When I was talking it out with my committe member, my PI was like "this is why I stick to taxonomy and phylogeny"

Solstice Things: Feral Housewife: Kim Namjoon Story

Hello, darlings!

Today and I'm excited to introduce you to the leading lady of Feral Housewife… and of FH's Joon's life, lol. 

Meet Solstice Woods aka Stiss. 

Born to Laura Kiroya and Trevon Woods, Solstice is the eldest child. 

She has two younger sisters, Angel and Anya and the baby of the group is her brother, Andre.  

There is a running joke with her family that with a name like Solstice Woods she would either become an evironmentalist or a stripper. 

Low and behold, one family gathering she dropped the bomb that she had took up pole dancing fitness during her third year of college while she was earning her degree in Environmental Sciences.  

Solstice has what I call, BGE aka big gremlin energy. 

Think about the aesthetics gremlincore (or sometimes called goblincore), naturecore and forestcore. 

She's someone who likes to be outside as much as possible and she embraces the strange and odd.  

And that very much includes herself. 

And for all that chaotic energy, she is actually a bit of a clean freak.  

Her last year of college she ended up double majoring in Environmental Sciences and also in Business which served her because now she is the founder of Mother Mud, a 100% natural, evironmentally friendly cleaning and organzing company that she started when she was actually still in college. 

It started because she was doing house cleaning as a way to make ends meet and made sure to use natural cleaners and it took off from there as a side project throughout the years until it became her main source of income.

It focuses on natural ingredients and materials but they also reach out to other companys to figure out ways to reuse and recycle.  Any plastic that is used by Mother Mud is 100% recycled and it's all about making a difference and helping take care of the Earth. 

She enjoys things like thrifting, yard sales, antiquing and diy'ing.   She's all about that green life.  But she also enjoys chilling at home sometimes, especially if she's got a Joon to cuddle.  She likes camping and road trips a lot too.   She and Joon have had a few arguments because she loves being on the road and seeing things but he spends so much of his time traveling that for a while there, he just wanted to hole up in the house and not leave.   They met half way because he realized that she just wanted to spend some time in nature with him and she also realized that sometimes he really needs that time to wind down and just enjoy home.    They're not perfect because they're people but they love each other- so they always make an effort with one another.  

She loves being outside so hiking is a big thing for her. Sometimes she goes at it like a wild bear but let's be honest, while the climb is beautiful and the view is magnificent…. for Stiss… it's about the snacks you get to eat when you get up there.  

She is nothing if not a gobble gut and she is proud to be that way. 

She is proud of her soft tummy. 

Physically, Solstice is a little taller than average coming in around 5'9'' and she's very chonky. She's a long legged creature and has big feet that she proudly refers to her as hobbit feet.   Just less hairy, lol.  However, she has no issue at all with body hair.  She's firm believer that it grows naturally and that women are magnificent fucking creatures and if it grows naturally- it. is. beautiful.   She also loves the feel of smooth skin though- especially when she rubs her legs together like a damn grasshopper under clean sheets.   

She inherited her father's warm brown skin and also her mother's freckles.  She has dark hair and dark hazel eyes with a lovely prominent nose and mouth.   She thinks her prominent nose is one of her most unique and gorgeous features about herself.  

Solstice is also Joon's senior by two years and she lords this over him every chance she gets.  Unlike in (some, not all, just some) parts of society, she is not bothered at all by the fact that she is older and getting older.  She embraces her years as they come and simply she is gaining more rings which is a nod to her nature loving nature as it is said you can tell the age of trees by counting the rings.  

That's just a peek into Stiss and I hope you are excited for Feral Housewife because my god, I am so excited to share their story with you, my loves!!!!!!

anyway guess what i’ve been doing

playing hades! imagine that! actually playing a game i’m into! though to be fair my computer is a complete potato™ and i don’t have money to upgrade, so most pc games i just. can’t play on it. but i can play hades, and even though sometimes my pc fans sound like they’re trying to take off, the only drop of performance i’ve gotten so far is a bit of a drop in framerate when there’s a SHIT TON of enemies, attack special effects and evironmental effects (like those smoke clouds in asphodel) on the screen at once. yay!

anyway, i’m not very good, but i’m still trying! i’ve been using the bow because i like bows (and i’m a weenie who likes staying away from enemies), and on my last run i got a really OP upgrade for it, and with it i got further than ever before!

The thing about Greta Thunberg that I myself have not seen discussed and just want to say so that it’s understood, is that the reason Greta can do what she is doing is because:

a) she’s privileged

b) she’s a child

c) she’s white

Her vulnerability as a child is absolutely her power because she cannot be assumed or painted to be malicious or incompetent the way she would be as an adult.

Her whiteness makes her socially palatable because she fits a narrative about self that white people will actually listen to. That’s not a good thing it’s just necessary bc white ppl have the damndest time empathizing with nonwhite ppl.

Her ability to strike and take actions is directly helped by the fact that she’s not responsible for her wellbeing/income, nor anyone else’s.

I want to say this bc I know of so many black and brown people who literally fight with family and friends about recycling and evironmental issues but lack the social security to strike every friday, cannot risk going out on the streets lest they face arrest, etc etc.

So every time I see Greta, I see her as wonderful but the only reason she stands out is because she’s one of the only bodies that can make it through the filter of white supremacy without being attacked or silenced.

And I think thus that in the great scheme of things, this is a perfect plan. Children are disarming. Anyone who attacks a child exposes themselves as inherently malicious.

But please don’t forget why it’s working, and why it didn’t work for so many other people.

Greta can skip school and get ppl to do her favors while her parents see after her care in a way many adults my age absolutely could not and could not have gotten their parents to consent to when we were younger- especially in the states bc ppl here are such propagandized consumers.

It’s coming down to white kids to do activism bc everyone else is too easily beaten, policed and starved. That’s not actually like...great. It’s not that the kids are more willing than the adults and I keep seeing that narrative. I’ve been pushing for environmental awarness in the home, in my offices, in my life, since childhood, for example. And I’ve always HATED the social narrative of ‘the children are our future’ bc a) no one cares about kids usually, especially not nonwhite kids (but as sandy hook shows....not even white kids either) b) ppl say that to pawn activism off on children.

Adults keep getting left off the hook but simultaneously as these narratives keep going I see more and more teens- usually white- saying shit like ‘and the adults don’t care’. Your parent’s don’t care. My parent’s didn’t care.

But I’m an adult now and I’ve been caring since childhood. I know they’re kids and they don’t understand systematic oppression but for those of us that are old enough to do so...

Endowed Architecture - A Little Bit Utopian, A Little Bit Completely Bonkers

the average Endowed Fleet sense of architecture is a complicated mash-up of several different spectrums, and those can change from world to world (or given the presence of alchemizing and its attendant potential for construction, rapid reshaping of cities just to fit in with someone’s artistic vision), but generally they have two broad ranges: Solarpunk Utopia, and scavenger nonsense.

The first is the kind of architecture that comes to mind with solarpunk; evironmental harmonious designs, technologies and forms of construction that work with the natural world. Massive towers overflowing with agricultural terrace farms, a certain tendency for flowing and curving shapes. Lots and LOTS of domes, and jungles/forests/swamps (depending on climate) being the root of the area, with buildings either made FROM the natural world or seamlessly flowing into it, architecture symbiotically linked to the growth.

Often, the cities are powered by a mixture of drawing upon their collective soul energy, and the processes by the plants feeding. Sometimes they are grown to exude natural byproducts useful for fuel, too. It’s common for them to be big cities upon the water, or even massive ship-board cities drifting upon the seas.

These are beauitful cities, utopian wonderlands of gargantuan heroines, mutant citizens of every species and shape, where everyone is free to mold themselves into whatever form or occupation they dream of.

The second variation bears in mind to the Fleet’s OTHER big charactertistic. Yes, they are heroic utopians, dreaming of a better tomorrow and freedom for all, as well as the responsibiltiy to make it better for everyone too. But the thing they are known for apart from that is... well, they are completely bugfuck insane.

Remember! This is a civilization that collectively sees nothing wrong with the biological equivalent of growing a massive gun from your forehead and setting it up to fire rockets that sing pop songs as they go, who tend to go around freaking out other people just for the hell of it, and who are of such character that Sierra, Grimlock, and Terezi are highly respected and venerated figures.

Just, think about that for a second. This is a civilization that regards a borderline yandere with no common sense, a perpetually angry dinosaur-Hulk who constantly trolls people, and the lawful good but not lawful comprehensible madness that is Miss Pyrope.

This means that the Fleet’s cities are often a topographical mess, streets going into completely random directions and with entire buildings composed of stationary mechs that don’t have anything better to do. They are built to not only withstand monster attacks, but INVITE kaiju over to have a fight. (Fleet members tend to get bored without at least one good monster fight a week. Any longer and they get suspicious.)

Various parts constantly flood, apparently for the hell of it or the sweet surfing, and other parts just... explode. For no apparent reason. Why? They like the noise, perhaps.

Their architecture often looks mashed together from random bits of junk, or crudely welded together; it looks like a scavenger’s pit hauled up and forced into the vague shape of a city, and they like it this way.

The mixture of these two odd elements can make the Fleet’s architecture look VERY surreal!

Not to mention on fire. They claim that a little bit of community arson builds character.

Ah Damn

So there’s this teacher that I’m really close with. Like my absolute favorite teacher I’ve ever had. I even signed up for her evironmental study hall where instead of working for ourselves we work to better our school environmentally. Well although I still love the teacher I’m just so beyond over this study hall. I want to switch to a regular senior one because I have beef with some of the students now and I have beef with the other advising teacher now and it’s become a lot of work and I only signed up for this teacher. I went to my counselor to ask her to switch to a senior class and she said I needed the green light from mrs. Enviro because of course she did. Well I aid for her my first block so I came in and was like freaking out and shaking a little because I didn’t want to ask her or let her down or just leave her class. I thought she was gonna just be like “yea but why do you want to?” But oh no... she gets like this hurt confused look and is like “ummm... no... it’s the fourth quarter already....” and I told her that my counselor had said it’s fine as long as she said. She asked me why and I told her it’s a lot of little things like disagreements with some of the students and wanting to spend my study hall working on scholarship apps and my online class and stuff I need to get done before graduation. She’s like “well I just think you could get that all done in here. We can work that at. So no.” And I know I was sounding weak and sounding really scared and like I was about to cry at this point mostly because I was afraid of her. I said something else along the lines of just, “ok yea my counselor just said to talk to you but umm yea ok.” And she tells me, “just give me a couple minutes to process all this and think about it.” And walked away. Now I feel all gross and weak and sad! Like I totally feel like I just let down my favorite teacher and plus even after all that I’m still gonna be stuck in her study hall with these people that I hate but now the only difference is that my favorite teacher might no longer like me and it’s gonna be really weird between us now...

Thoughts on Rewilding, Solarpunk, and just some randomness

Okay, lately in my social media feeds I been seeing more post based on the "Solarpunk" style ethos, which is an attempt to have an optimistic view of the future. It's imagining a future where we as a society have married technology and ecological responsibility. Part of this conversion is "rewilding" which can (in my opinion) best be thought of as looking at what our anscestors did to live in harmony with their environment in order to apply and improve those techniques in the service of living in harmony with our environment in the future. Unfortunately, I'm not an optimist and I try not to have an overly romantic view of the past. Most of my ancestors were not concerned with harmonious living with nature, as much as just getting through and surviving daily life. This means if what it took to keep the family fed was chopping down a couple acres of forest to plant wheat as a monoculture crop that's what they did. Now all of these thoughts just served to remind me of some research I started to do years ago. If we want to live in the most evironmentally friendly manner possible, if the Columbian exchange never happened in the Americas, what the hell do we eat?

Seriously, this is something that needs to be thought about. Just using my lunch as an example I have leftovers from last nights casserole, some of the ingredients are potatoes, beef, cheese, corn, and tomatoes. Not a single one of the items is from North America in origin. Beef and dairy cattle were imported to the Americas from Europe. Potatoes and tomatoes are originally from South America. Corn is a genetically modified (via selective breeding) version of the Central American grass Teosinte. Cultivation of any of these in North America has a negative ecological effect. So what the hell is left?

It's not like there is an indigenous North American food culture to look to for sustainable examples. Most Native American recipes that can be found these days are based on what was available during the reservation era not native crops. If we want to build a sustainable optimistic future of abundance we can't do it be repeating the mistakes of the past and introducing plant and animal species into areas they don't belong. Such actions are not sustainable and can very quickly turn a situation of abundance, which is needed for economic justice, into one of scarcity which effectively puts us right back where we ****ing started.
