Every day I meet people who say they "need to get back into reading," that they "haven't read since they were a kid," etc. etc. etc., only to then inevitably say "...except, you know, [YA/comics/kids' books/fanfiction/something else that is objectively writing that you read]."

And obviously if someone wants to get into adult traditionally published fiction I'm happy to show them around, especially if they're trying to find something by minority authors, or something outside of the award-winning bestselling Oprah Witherspoon Book Club picks, or perhaps something faster-paced, or shorter, or whatever makes it easier for them to get into—

but there is also absolutely nothing wrong with having a reading preference. In fact, statistically speaking, in a country where 54% of people allegedly read below a 6th grade level, it's more likely than not that the average person is not destined to love Infinite Jest. (N.B.: literacy is complex if not impossible to define and these are not equally distributed probabilities among everyone in the population.) I feel the need to tell all these people that they are readers, since, by definition, they read—and enjoy it! And if they don't enjoy reading as an adult, well, there are films and songs and television shows and video games out there for them to get their fill of art. There's fashion and sculpture and painting and architecture; nobody has to do my One True Hobby to be smart or cultured or (jeepers) morally correct.

So if you are a reader who prefers books with simpler prose, plots aimed at child readers, fast pacing, art with your words, or anything else associated with kfic/YA/comics/etc., that's perfectly alright. If you find your attempts to read adult fiction or "classics" or whatever other thing you feel you Should read don't actually result in enjoyment, that's alright, too. Any time you spend feeling guilty is a waste—you could spend it reading!

A/N: I wrote this for myself because I have many skin problems and they absolutely ruin my mental health so I needed comfort and only I knew what I needed. I hope anybody who's going through or has gone through something similar feels comfort within this.

It's 9 o'clock PM and he sees you're still awake and playing games or something and is just like

"hey brat, ya put on your medication yet?"

and you kinda pretend not to hear him/sink deeper into your seat on the couch and he makes that little "tch" noise and walks over to you, blocking your view from the TV and crosses his arms. In response you lean to one side and as you open yourself up leaning he picks you up and slings you over his shoulder, taking the controller or whatever out of your hand. Carries your reluctant ass to the bathroom and sets you on the sink before standing between your legs so you can't go anywhere.

"Alright, now you're going to be a big girl and let me put this on you. Understood?" You nod. He grabs one of the jars of ointment from behind you, unscrewing the lid and gathering the recommended amount on his fingertips, as his hands get closer to your face your eyes begin to water and he just whispers a really broken "I know baby, it's okay" and you let him put it on.

After your whole face is covered he closes the jar and grabs one of the tubes and squeezes some onto his fingers after wiping the previous stuff off with a towel. "Hand." you place your hand in his large open one as he applies the gooey substance to the back of it.

"Put'em up" you raise your arms so he can inspect in order to find any other spots that may need coverage. He closes the tube, taking this as a sign for the final treatment you put your arms down and take off your shirt, clutching it tightly in your hand that isn't covered.

The tears in your eyes bunch at your lashes while you try not to full on sob again. He grabs the final tube and inspects the area before putting it on, he gently roams your skin with his hand before trailing kisses against your neck, then applying the substance, he did this with every spot after that needed covered. When the cap was back on he wiped his hands free of all product then caged you in on both sides with his arms before you leaned forward and hugged around his neck, crying over his shoulder.

Picking you up again he rubbed your back as he walked you to the bed. Sitting you on the end he switched out the pillows for the ones you preferred to use on nights like this before laying on his side and patting the space next to him for you to come up and meet him. When you do you hide in his chest, arms tightly circled around his waist while your breath evened out and your tears slowly came to an end. He rubs your back as you find your composure and when he notices you're almost there he tells you

"You did so well, I'm so proud of my good girl" and he kisses the top of your head. "I love you, even with all of this."
