“Superman vs. Meshi,” “Batman: Justice Buster,” and “Joker: One Operation Joker” Manga Getting English Translations
Tumblr media
DC Comics is working on English translations of the Kodansha series of manga books featuring DC characters. Superman vs. Meshi, Batman: Justice Buster, and Joker: One Operation Joker will launch first exclusively on DC Universe Infinite, which is getting an update with a manga-friendly reader. In the fall of 2023, DC will release collected edition of each title as well.
Superman vs. Meshi hails from writer Satoshi Miyagawa and artist Kai Kitago. Superman is a hunger hero and so makes quick stops in Japan to try out a new chain restaurant every day. “Whether it’s a hearty bowl of curry or conveyor-belt sushi, the Man of Steel loves to indulge in the delectable delicacies the country has to offer. He’ll even share a meal with the other members of the Justice League from time to time in the hopes of showing them an incredible culinary experience.” (DC Comics)
Tumblr media
Batman: Justice Buster hails from Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi. Batman has only been protecting Gotham for a show time, but since his arrival crime has gotten even more bold and destructive. “As Batman tries to rise to meet these new threats, he develops a computer system, ROBIN, to help him analyze and subdue the rising criminal tide and hopefully one day put an end to crime in Gotham.” (DC Comics)
Tumblr media
Joker: One Operation Joker hails from writer Satoshi Miyagawa and artist Keisuke Gotou. The manga will put the Joker in the role of single father after an encounter with Batman de-ages the hero into a baby. Naturally, the “Joker takes it upon himself to raise the child into the crusader of justice! But does the Clown Prince of Crime really understand what it means to be Batman—or, more importantly, what it means to raise a baby all by yourself?” (DC Comics)

There's just something so incredibly charming about how Kai Kitago has clearly used Christopher Reeve (and Margot Kidder) as his basis for Clark Kent in "Superman Vs Meshi". I know that black and white is just standard for manga, but it really helps give the book a "classic" feel? Like I'm reading something that has been part of the canon for decades and not a series from 2021! In fact seeing this Clark using a computer tablet to order food just felt PLAN WEIRD! So I look forward to what might occur when the rest of the Justice League shows up for lunch and who Kitago might base THEM on!
It wouldn't say the series is necessarily good or bad, I mean only issue one is available (legally in English) right now so who can really say? But I will say that I am utterly charmed by it and how delightfully silly it is! I loved Clark's biggest concern being if he can order the rice dish and still make it back to the office before his lunch break is over ...

Anonymous asked: So they're making a Superman manga about him eating at Japanese restaurants?
I'm down.
Tumblr media
Lot of the best Superman stories are 'he sits down and has a talk with some normal somebody' and the mechanism of this series - Superman sitting down in a bunch of restaurants - is a perfect vehicle for that. Hope it lives up to the odd yet obvious potential it has and it ends up localized.

Out this week: Various DC manga titles (DC, $9.99): Three DC manga titles arrive in print this week, following their release on DC Universe Infinite:
Superman vs. Meshi by Satoshi Miyagawa with art by Kai Kitago, which is about Clark Kent’s daily lunch selections in Japan;
Batman: Justice Buster by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi, which has Batman creating a supercomputer named ROBIN to help him fight crime; and
Joker: One Operation Joker by Satoshi Miyagawa with art by Keisuke Gotou, which finds Batman de-aged into a baby, who the Joker decides to raise. No, seriously.
See what else is arriving in comic shops this week -- but I'm not sure what could top Daddy Joker raising Baby Batman.

Superman to star in upcoming gourmet manga series
TOKYO
It’s Superman like you’ve never seen him before…eating Japanese food.
As one of the most enduring characters in comic book history, Superman has gone through an uncountable number of exploits and adventures from the ludicrous to the tragic. There was that time he stepped into the ring with Muhammad Ali, as well as when he learned to shoot rainbows out his fingers.
And yet all this time we’ve never really – we mean really – dug deep into his diet and eating habits. Does he put a napkin on his lap? Is he a picky eater who always wants to alter menu items to his tastes? Does Earth’s yellow sun cause his gut bacteria to produce gas at a superhuman rate, thus producing farts that could fill entire stadiums?
Hopefully, an upcoming manga published in the manga magazine Evening and website Comic Days will answer some of these questions. Unlike Supes’ previous titles, this latest series will be a gourmet manga titled "Superman vs Food: Superman’s Meals of Solitude" (Superman vs Meshi: Superman No Hitori Meshi), written by Satoshi Miyakawa with art by Kai Kitago.
The series will follow the Man of Steel as he flies around Japan and samples its various regional cuisines faster that a regular gourmet manga character would on a speeding bullet train. He may have taken on Darkseid and Doomsday, but can he stomach octopus eggs or or talk a cook out of shaving their head when a hair is found in the food?
We shall see when the first installment hits stands on June 22 in Evening #14. Meanwhile, people online are abuzz with this looming new culinary adventure.
“Something feels off about a big muscly man holding a heap of rice.”
“He’s American, so let him try some of Japan’s delicious American food.”
“It’s Superman, but he’s doing stuff basically anyone can do.”
“Superman eats rice?!”
“Wait, what?”
“Why?”
“Japanese food is good. He’s in for a treat.”
DC’s previous manga adaptations "Batman Justice Buster" and "One Operation Joker" were well-received and both have upcoming tankobon editions this summer. But a Superman gourmet manga is uncharted territory.
▼ The "One Operation Joker" tankobon will go on sale June 23.
The synopsis says that Superman will visit some chain restaurants, cook seasoned rice in an iron pot to make the dish called kamameshi with his heat rays, and form a Justice League with the ingredients of a tempura rice bowl.
We're not sure what that last one means, but we still have faith this could work. It’s already well-established that he could punch most people’s heads off before they even notice him, so it would be much more interesting to instead see how well Superman handles random complements about how he uses his chopsticks, or how he feels about getting charged for an appetizer that he never ordered.
