Yuma Month Day 26 - Role Swap
god i was excited for this one. it first started off as a joke, but the more i thought about it, the more interesting this swap became. so here's my massive lore dump of changes that'd happen in the story beneath the cut (spoiler warning):
i think, fundamentally, yuma and yakou are very similar characters. they're both very protective and kindhearted, with a strong sense of justice and a penchant for attracting terrible luck. because of this, some things would remain the same, such as the NDA's dynamics with their doormat chief as well amnesia!yakou's massive unpaid intern energy. i think yakou would be pretty similar to how he behaved in the light novel- a bit more optimistic and naive, like yuma. but there are two key differences between them that'd make this a different story, especially in ch 4: yuma has a forte, and yakou is very selfish. so here's some changes:
yakou's wife is his shinigami now, as you can see, while shinigami is yuma's dead wife. i think mrs furio would act cooler than shinigami. she'd still be playful, but she takes her job more seriously. also she hands yakou the solution keys normally without throwing up. they still have to do the dance and mouth sword thing tho. and the other stuff. that's just death god protocol
shinigami (or in this case the unnamed Mrs. Kokohead but i will still be calling her shinigami for convenience sake) was a scientist at amaterasu who studied forensics and thanatology instead of regenerative medicine. this also means that the pill she gives zombie yuma is not going to bring him back, but instead grant the zombie homunculi a peaceful, painless, but permanent death
speaking of zombie yuma, he's the homunculus now! yakou is 100% human and also doesnt have a forte. he's still number one, but instead of having a forte he's just that good at solving mysteries
yes this means makoto looks like yakou now. sorry makotoheads. i think he'd have really long, shaggy hair dyed to be like. idk. black or something. also he's more clean shaven bc stubble with a mask on is a sensory nightmare
yuma still cant cook. he subsists entirely on takeout, meat buns, black coffee, and beer. he's still in a lot of debt and under a lot of stress and his personality is essentially "what if canon number one just gave up"
he doesn't smoke though. he tried once and got into the worst coughing fit
imma say it right now. kurumi is not a love interest. yakou likely disguises himself as a faculty member instead (also i think one of the teachers gets a crush on fem yakou bc i just know she'd be hot)
ANYWAY what about chapter 4? im SO glad you asked! because here's where things get spicy!
so, lets start with the dead wife. shinigami catches onto huesca's inhumane research and she's just as adamant about bringing the truth to light as she always is. she blows the whistle, so he blows her up. yuma investigates, but they dont let him look any further, yada yada, yuma stews in his misery for five years
yomi sends in the evidence to motivate yuma to kill huesca, and makoto lets it happen because a dead huesca would be convenient. he even introduces the hitman, fully expecting yuma to make use of him
yuma doesnt. in fact, he wants to kill huesca with his own hands. and now that these detectives are here, he can do it and even return alive. the thing is, he doesn't want to put them in danger, so he chooses to do almost everything alone (sound familiar?)
his plan is simple:
ask desuhiko for a peacekeeper uniform. desuhiko trusts him enough to take "i want to investigate kanai ward's ultimate secret by infiltrating their ranks" as an answer. he does, however, let yakou know about this as an offhand comment before the mystery ever begins
hold fubuki's hand. it doesnt really matter how. she'll gladly allow it because she's fubuki. he stores her time powers and heads out the sub. yakou also learns this as an offhand comment played off as a joke (maybe fubuki affectionately comments about how she never expected the chief's hands to be so soft... idk. there has to be some way for yakou to have this as a future clue)
use his peacekeeper status to sneak into amaterasu HQ and demand a functioning ama-pal from that one creepy researcher
use ama-pal + fubuki's borrowed powers to bypass huesca's security. sneak the bot past the hard-of-hearing doctor and press the button to shut off security
this would probably alert huesca, but since the doctor never received a warning, yuma has enough time to rush in and stab him before he realizes what's going on
leave HQ while still in uniform, dispose of the disguise once he's safe, and return to the NDA like nothing happened. success!
soooo.... yakou, on that same day, decides to investigate amaterasu HQ with makoto
all the while, vivia has his suspicions about yuma's actions and keeps an eye on him in spectral mode. he... basically witnessed the whole thing, so he gets up off his ass and decides to follow yakou to the lab because he has a Very Bad Feeling about this
just like canon, he senses the death god and deduces that our protag has been killing off murderers, and so he wants to protect his chief as well as his peace and quiet (his dynamic with yuma would be the same as his dynamic with yakou, since it's entirely believable for yuma to treat vivia with the same kindness yakou did)
yakou tries to speak to huesca, but surprise! security is disabled and he's dead in the lab! no one else at amaterasu liked huesca enough to check on him, so yakou and makoto are the first ones at the scene of the crime. yakou, of course, decides to start investigating this murder
vivia somehow sneaks into the lab (dont ask me how) and confronts yakou, threatening him with his boxcutter and adamantly imploring him to stop pursuing this particular mystery in the same way he did yuma in canon. unfortunately, this attracts attention, and now they're in trouble (maybe even yomi's there to fetch his files). at this point, yakou has enough solution keys, so he panics and goes right into the labyrinth (and maybe others can enter for another reason that isnt coalescence idk)
so... they go in the labyrinth... vivia tries to stop him every step of the way, until the answer is right in front of them
yakou kills yuma with his own hands. there's no stab wounds or toxic gas to leave any doubt. yakou begins to question what good his justice really does. it doesnt even save them from their predicament, just like the other deaths. instead, makoto ex machina comes in to save them, and hands yakou a small black box
when they return to the agency, everyone is heartbroken over their chief, who seemingly died out of nowhere. fubuki tried rewinding time, but to no avail. halara tried everything to wake him up, knowing it's futile. desuhiko stood aside, feeling completely helpless. and yakou and vivia return looking like they just came back from hell
they barely get the chance for a funeral before the knockout gas trap activates... you know the rest
AAAAND SCENE! so that's my extremely long winded lore dump about this au. i thought about it Way Too Much but god it's so interesting to me. i love these characters and swapping them was immensely fun

PROLOGUE - We All Live In A Smelly Submarine (Comic)
Tumblr media
Nine Master Detectives and one detective-in-training convene with the Chief aboard the Nocturnal Detective Agency's semi-sub-aquatic headquarters. It's pretty cramped, and it reeks of tobacco.
Tumblr media
Yakou tries to take charge of the group, but quickly finds that Master Detectives in greater numbers are not easy to give orders to...
((tw: cigarettes, cartoon violence + blood))
Suddenly the phone rings! They make Yuma answer it, of course.
They chat with #1 who tells them to investigate "Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret" and the "Great Global Mystery".
Tumblr media
Then the Master Detectives start talking about using their Fortes to start digging into Amaterasu Corp ASAP, and Yakou balks. "Don't piss them off," he pleads, "they're too scawy :( if we just stand really still and don't bother them maybe the mystery will solve itself :'D"
The Chief's cowardice causes a stir in the room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zilch and Aphex's bickering becomes louder and more heated. Yuma can tell looking at Pucci - sitting on the floor next to the guy in the fireplace - that the volume level is starting to piss her off. He's worried she'll get enraged like she did on the train, but before she can -- a different voice speaks out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, the conversation winds back around to Yakou's leadership abilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the extended gang gets a radical anime opening. Yippee!
-------
Feels like this one took a while, but honestly I banged most of this out over the past couple days. I've been busy working on Chapter 1... and forgot the game also had a prologue. Whoops. I guess that means Chapter 1 will be uploaded pretty soon after this one - maybe on Monday or something.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy - I've had a blast reading through everyone's tags on Chapter 0 so far and each little comment gives me so much serotonin you have no idea ;u; Keep 'em comin'! (My askbox is also open if you have any questions or theories about Boba AU so far >:D)
As always, thanks for reading!

How much did Yakou know?
Very long and detailed analysis of Yakou's involvement in the plot beneath the cut.
Yakou is an interesting character to me. He gets his own mildly insightful short story about his detective origins. However, I crave to think that there's gotta be more to him than just the kind of pathetic (affectionate) stressed out dad-like figure that mostly kind of nags and bosses Yuma around for the majority of the game.
Ok, it sounds like I'm ragging on him, but he does have an occasional side of him in dire situations where he shows a selfless loyalty and trust in his team that proves he takes his leadership position seriously, even if he does really rock the irresponsible mess look. And he gets to be cool in his own chapter for a minute.
But there is a moment that sticks out to me, especially in hindsight after finishing the game, and that's the prologue where you get your first and probably most substantial talk with him.
Tumblr media
He says that he does not want Kanai Ward to change practically within the same breath where he explains how terribly he's treated as a detective in this horrendously corrupt murder infested police state.
Although he makes it clear that he has a deep personal affection and nostalgic attachment to this city that shows a bias for why he would say this, we hear from multiple people throughout the game that Kanai Ward has not been the same in recent years as it has been in the past that Yakou has rooted his love in.
Tumblr media
So why does he feel as if any change to the current state of Kanai Ward would disrupt the "peace and quiet" it deserves?
Unless he knows something about the city that's just so fundamentally irreparable that this is the closest to peace and quiet that it'll ever get again, and trying to fix it would only somehow destroy it.
Everything about the rooftop scene, from talking about the city, to Shinigami commenting on how ominous he feels to her, to the fact that he's the person who explains the rumor that the rain affects peoples' bodies.
Tumblr media
Highlighted text tends to be easy to overlook, but I can't help but feel like there's some significance to his usage of "illusion in the rain". It's like he knows something that nobody else can see (and an obvious foreshadowing of how the rain is one of the main means of covering up Kanai Ward's mystery).
But this segues into the themes of his later chapter which also focuses on Vivia, who mirrors Yakou in a lot of ways, beyond just being another guy who muses on about peace and quiet.
Speaking of, a mirror is what Vivia uses as a metaphor for the benefit of blissful ignorance and the potential catastrophic dangers of the painful truth.
Tumblr media
For the purposes of this chapter, he is explaining the type of pain and the effect on Yuma's world view that uncovering Yakou's crime will incur. It also acts as a setup for the development of Yuma's conviction that he will later need to use in the final chapter of the game. But the distorted reality the Vivia explains in the mirror does call me back to Yakou's "illusion in the rain" comment.
Vivia also explains that the truth that Yuma uncovers for truth's sake will lead to the destruction of the world. While he could be referring to the world and humanity in general, in the context of this chapter, world can mean a lot of things though, such as Yuma's innocence in the way he views the world as he knows it.
Or namely, from Makoto's point of view, it could also mean the destruction of the homunculi and the only version of the world that Makoto believes they can exist in.
Did Yakou come to a similar conclusion as Makoto based on what he found out?
Like Vivia in chapter 4, who did not want the culprit to be revealed, it seemed like Yakou had the full intention of not cooperating with investigating the Kanai Ward mystery until he was forced to by a directive from Number One. Even so, he came off as if encouraging the detectives to drag their feet on it for the sake of staying out of trouble.
But we know that he is not lazy, unmotivated, or stupid. In a world where you're competing with people who are fast-tracked into the WDO if they have literal super powers, Yakou was inducted by pure detective skill. He had definitely been spending a lot of his time laying low and investigating Kanai Ward himself, because he didn't trust the UG or the WDO if they turned their attention to the city.
Yakou already knew about the homunculus research in some way.
Even if he didn't know about everyone being a homunculus, he at least knew enough that he believed that the city itself would be shattered by the involvement of the UG and WDO.
And then we get to chapter 5 with the mindless zombie homunculi.
Except, they're not all completely mindless. As a matter of fact, I had come to notice something about all the non-aggressive homunculi: they all seemed to have some degree of awareness about Amaterasu's research.
The fake Zilch, who was one of Yomi's closest advisors and knew about all of Dr Huesca's and Yomi's activity in the lab concerning homunculus research, and was implied to be the one who killed Yakou's wife for whistleblowing. Fink, who was propositioned by Makoto himself to infiltrate the lab, and who was then killed by Makoto for 'knowing too much'. Dr Huesca, who was the head researcher for the homunculi. And the former CEO, who was the prime overseer of the research.
And then there was Yakou, who gives Yuma the video evidence of Dr Huesca's death at the hands of the homunculi as he explained the results of the experiment. The easy explanation is that Makoto planted this video on the zombie Yakou to be given to Yuma in the restricted area.
However, another thing that the non-aggressive zombies had in common is that they seemed to be stuck thinking about what seems to be their final thoughts before their death, barring the former CEO who was unusually lucid compared to all of them.
Tumblr media
Considering this, I feel like Yakou's final thoughts were for Yuma to expose the truth about the homunculi for him, and to give him the DVD as the key evidence he needed. Whether Makoto gave Yakou this video, or if Yakou already had this video himself, his final thought before dying was to make sure Yuma got it.
Tumblr media
I always thought it was a bit strange for Yakou to go and decide to murder Dr Huesca at the slightest provocation by Yomi, and then had this whole complicated coverup plan. If Kurumi could look into Yakou's background for only a day and come to the conclusion that Amaterasu had killed his wife for whistleblowing, then Yakou himself would've definitely already known and could've tried to kill Dr Huesca a long time ago.
Tumblr media
I don't think the provocation was by Yomi's letter. I believe at some point, he had found out that Huesca and Yomi could possibly leak information about the homunculus research. He decided to kill Huesca as a gambit reveal Yomi's involvement with leaking research before it could get out into the public and destroy Kanai Ward, and he entrusted this truth to Yuma and the rest of his detectives. Yakou knew that the lie that they were living, the one that was keeping Kanai Ward together, wasn't going to last much longer.
This conveniently aligned with Makoto's motives to oust Yomi. Makoto, the one who also knew that Yomi would cause the lie holding Kanai Ward together to unravel, and who happened to introduce Fink to Yakou. Fink thought that Yakou did not know about Makoto orchestrating their meeting, and perhaps he was right in that Yakou didn't know that it was Makoto specifically, but maybe Makoto was the one who tipped Yakou off to Amaterasu's homunculus research possibly being leaked and may have even given Yakou the DVD.
Makoto may not have exactly manipulated Yakou. It just simply that both Yakou and Makoto similarly knew that the UG sticking their nose into Kanai Ward about the homunculus research was incredibly dangerous. Makoto simply gave Yakou the ultimatum and means to stop Yomi. The difference is that Makoto's goal was to get rid of Yomi and assume full control of the city in order to further suppress its secret, but Yakou's goal was the provide the truth to his detectives in order to fix things.
And I wrote all this BEFORE the Yakou DLC came out.
Tumblr media
Where we find out that Yakou has had the prototype cure for homunculi the whole time. And depending on whether or not his wife here is a ghost or a hallucination, it seems like she had always known that there would be a need to regenerate the zombified brain cells of homunculi. Yakou might've been biding time not only to try and figure out how to reconcile the whole homunculus research issue without the UG destroying Kanai Ward, but maybe also for someone to finish research on this medicine.
TLDR; Yakou had always known about the homunculus research and was hiding it because he believed that the info getting leaked would cause the destruction of Kanai Ward by the hands of the UG. In the end, he figured out that the secret would not keep up for much longer, and his plot in chapter 4 wasn't for revenge, but to entrust that Yuma and the rest of his detectives would be able to uncover the truth and work out a way to save Kanai Ward.

A Kanai and Alistar SicFic
⚠️Content Warning⚠️
Snz Fic, Sick Fic, Failed Caretaking, smut,
snzfcking
Tumblr media
Description: For once, Al is sick, and it’s anything but desirable. Kanai is left alone to foot the bill of taking care of him. Can he help soothe the ailing Anti-Christ?
Authors Notes: As promised 🫡 this fic was brought to you by @aller-geez depraved requests. She did the art and owns Kanai! Enjoy a fic that didn’t take me 2 months to complete! LOL
Draeko gathered his keys, and everything else he needed on his way out, scrambling quickly. “Okay, Kanai, just remember the list is on the counter of things I need done today…and I’ll be out for most of the day…” he looked around with curious mint and grey colored eyes. “Wait..Al isnt awake yet?” The navy haired man shrugged looking at Draeko with an almost tired, resolve. “Well, make sure you wake him up to help you with the chores, this place is a mess and it would really mean a lot if it was taken care of before I got back,” The hybrid tried to be sweet about his words, not wanting to come off too critical or harsh. However, the two men in particular weren’t the cleanliest of roommates.
Its not really on the demon to do list ‘Scrub bathroom floors’ and ‘Dust all the shelves’ sure they GENERALLY kept their things organized. Important things. It was exceptionally irritating to Draeko how clean Kanai always kept his room but doesn’t compute taking out the trash in the kitchen. “I understand, these things will be completed to your standard, Luciftias,” the mutt smiled sweetly upward at the hound, lifting on his toes to kiss him on the cheek. Kanai nodded gently as a response to the affections.
“See you later!” and out the door he went. Leaving the navy haired man to himself and, apparently, a lazy house mate. Kanai took a deep breath in and exhaled, it wasn’t like Al to still be in bed so he wasn’t sure what the demon had gotten into over the night. Slowly he approached the red head’s bedroom door and knocked with a cautious but confident hand. “Donnie?” he asked gently, without a response in return. He narrowed his thin brows and tried once more. “Donnie?” He spoke a bit louder this time, but nothing became of it. “Hm..” he contemplated out loud to himself, before simply pushing the door open and taking a step inside. “Alistar,” he said more sternly now, glaring at the sleeping blob wrapped under a fort of blankets.
“Hnnn…” A tortured groan escaped from under the material. “g-Go …aw…ay…AHH’EEHGGSHH’IUE!” with the sudden outburst that took them both by surprise, it started to become insanely clear to Kanai now. Alistar was sick. Kanai stood frozen in the doorway, uncertainty creeping into his mind like tendrils of mist. Alistar's thrashing figure beneath the blankets seemed foreign, a stark contrast to the usual boisterous demon he knew. He took a hesitant step forward, his heart pounding with a mixture of concern and helplessness.
"Are you okay?" Kanai finally mustered the courage to speak, his voice soft and filled with worry if it wasn’t so monotoned.
Alistar's response was immediate, cutting through the air like a jagged blade. "Obviously not! I feel like diarrhea dog shit, eaten by another dog, shat out again, and then angrily hosed down by the mean old man that owns the house," his words were laced with frustration, punctuated by a fit of coughing that racked his frame, his voice hoarse and strained.
The navy-haired man recoiled slightly at Alistar's outburst, unsure of how to proceed. He watched as the demon curled into himself, his breaths ragged and shallow. Kanai's concern deepened at the sight of Alistar in such a vulnerable state, he would have to think back to the ways Draeko had cared for them. “Okay, Donnie can you come out from underneath the sleeping materials? I have to put my hand on your face,” He wasn’t exactly sure why, or what purpose this served when Draeko did it, but it was normally the first step in the process.
The grumbling, sick infested demon emerged from the depths of his comfy bed nest and squinted his blackened eyes when met with the sun light peering through his curtains. “Fuckin…..Uncle Christ..” he tried to shield it with his arm but the glare hit him in a place that he wasnt aware needed to be scratched. Right before he could block himself of the light, he sneezed loudly and openly into the space in front of him. “hHEH’TZSCHh’UE!” Kanai took a step back, narrowly avoiding the spray of demon spittle as Alistar sneezed. Suppressing a shudder, he hesitantly approached the sick demon, his hand hovering uncertainly over Alistar's forehead. The demon's greyish hued skin was clammy to the touch, his temperature clearly elevated. Kanai's worry intensified at the realization of why the touch was so important.
"Your skin is extremely hot," Kanai murmured, more to himself than to Alistar. He knew he had to take care of the Anti-Christ, just as Draeko would have done in his absence. Yet, he had so much to do already, and he didn’t really know how to be a comfort to the red head. He thought to himself for a second and then spoke out with an idea "Let me get you some water and medicine," Yeah thats usually what comes next in the repertoire, with that, Kanai hurried out of the room, leaving Alistar to wallow in his own misery. For once, he was not excited to be sick whatsoever, it was really coming down on him, the weight of his body felt like he was being sucked into quick sand despite having a rather firm mattress. His head throbbed with each heartbeat, his body aching with fevered chills. He let out a weak cough, the sound hollow and raspy in the empty room. The demon closed his eyes, trying to focus on breathing through the discomfort, but every inhale felt like fire in his chest.
As he lay there, time seemed to stretch endlessly, the silence broken only by his inconsistent, but intensive broken sinuses. “AHH’EEHGGSHH’IUE! hih’aESShh’ue!” he allowed his open mouth to spew another large cloud of varying spittle. Groaning inwardly after, sliding the back of his hand across his nose to be left with an almost iridescent trail behind his blackened dorsal aspect. “I wish I could enjoy this…SNDf” he snarfled loudly his blackened eyes staring blankly ahead while he sat and waited Kanai’s return. Who speaking of which, was having a semi-mild panic attack because he wasn’t sure WHAT medication to give his suffering friend.
“Headache? Flu? Allergies? What are all these? What do they do? What do I give him?” Kanai frantically scanned the assortment of medicine bottles in the bathroom cabinet, each label a confusing jumble of medical terms. He bit his lip in frustration, wishing he had paid more attention when Draeko had explained their purposes. Taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, Kanai decided to scoop the entire stash and run it down the hall, back to his friend.
"I hope this helps," Kanai said slightly out of breath from the anxiety of it all, he dumped the contents of his arms onto the bed. Alistar blinked a few times, looking at the hoard of medications the hound had bestowed upon him.
“The fuck ones do I take? SndF..” the red head sniffled lightly trying to figure out what the words on the containers even meant. Picking up each one individually to get a better look.
“That part of the ritual is unclear, Donnie, I thought maybe you would know…” he reached back to scratch the nape of his neck nervously. Alistar let out an exasperated sigh, his hand rubbing his temples in a feeble attempt to alleviate the pounding headache that pulsed behind his eyes. The letters on the medication bottles seemed to blur together, mocking him with their indecipherable labels. With a frustrated huff, he tossed the bottles aside, resigned to his fate of suffering through the illness without the aid of modern medicine. “Fuck ALL this…I’ll just go back to sleep…” he grumbled angrily.
Kanai watched as Alistar's shoulders slumped in defeat, well that just wouldn’t do. What else? What else could he provide…he thought carefully looking around the demon’s messy room, he spotted a coffee mug sitting carelessly upon his night stand. Oh yeah! “Should I bring you some of Draeko’s leaf water? And perhaps a wet towel?” tilting his head as he looked over the other who had allowed his head to fall in his clammy hands.
“Sure…Nai…we can try that…SSDndFf…UGhhh…” he groaned again, it truly felt like he was on the verge of visiting dear ol’ dad again. The navy haired hound nodded with determination written clear across his face, he zipped his way into the kitchen rather quickly, trying to gather up the very supplies he had promised. He was struggling to remember exactly how the hybrid made the leaf beverage though. It was usually hot…”So then maybe…” with the only knowledge he had of obtaining hot water he turned on the kitchen sink, and waited a good few minutes whilst fishing around for the substance that made the base of the hot beverage. Unsure of what exactly he was looking for he saw a little dish of colorful flowers, leaves and various herb like substances. It was incredibly fragrant, was this it?
Kanai picked up the small containment and gave it a good sniff. It was incredibly floral, it didn’t exactly smell like the stuff Draeko normally made but he wasn’t able to find anything even remotely similar besides the basic cooking spices. Shrugging his shoulders, the hound filled up a mug with the hot sink water, and dumped the bits of mixed herb in, mixing it around til the water itself turned a fuchsia color. “That’ll do it,” nodding confidently, and without thinking to maybe fish the little chunky bits out of the mug, he instead brought the whole thing, as is, to the rotting demon in his bed.
Alistar grumbled and tossed, sniffling and snorting snot down his throat as he tried his best to clear his terrible congestion. He shuddered. “I have brought you the hot liquid,” Nai stands at the edge of Alistar’s large bed and the red head slowly emerges from the blanket he had been stuffed inside. The anti-christ takes the mug in both his hands and goes to sniff the substance, but is immediately blocked out by his insanely full sinuses. He shrugs loosely.
“Bottoms up,” though apprehensive upon seeing the floating debris he regrettably trusts in his best friend and begins to slurp the hot beverage…before promptly spitting it out. “UNHOLY FUCK…” he shouts as the sting of potpurri burns down his throat, shards of wood and dried petals lodging themselves between his teeth. “What the actual fuck did you put in this??” Kanai steps back sheepishly and scratches his head with confusion.
“I do not understand, is it not good?” He tilts his head almost innocently enough it convinced Alistar, he truly had no idea what he had given him.
“It’s fucking horrendous…” Kanai winced at Alistar's reaction, feeling a pang of guilt for not being able to provide the comfort he had hoped for. He watched as Alistar continued to cough and sputter, his black eyes watering from the overwhelming taste of the concoction. With a sigh, Kanai reached for the mug, intending to take it away and make amends for his mistake.
"I apologize, I suppose my find was insufficient," Kanai muttered apologetically as he grabbed the mug. Alistar wiped his mouth with the back of his blackened hand, grimacing in discomfort.
"Insufficient is one word…absolutely fuckin’ terrible is another…SDnfF…H-hih’…" Alistar rasped out between coughs, his voice hoarse from the ordeal, the light hitch of another oncoming sneeze haunted him as he tried to unearth it by looking over at the light peaking from the blinds. It was better to release than explode trying to hold them in.
Nodding with understanding, Kanai disposed of the failed remedy and fetched a glass of plain water instead. He handed it to Alistar who took it slowly in his hand, still staring steadily toward the light, his mouth hung open just barely agape as he tried to coax the phenomenon to the front. “H-H…” his breaths came out in short gasps, as if it was just below the surface ready to break free, he inhaled sharply, his eyes squeezed til they were almost closed and he, “HEHH’DZSCHh’iEEW! huh’ESSSH!” barreling forward as it splashed from his mouth and into the open air around him, Kanai trying to avoid getting hit with a plume of saliva by taking a few steps back. “SNNNNDDFF… Gahhhh…Id’s neber been dis bad bebore…sdarding do regred a lod of dedigions…” the demon struggled through his words as they became mush in the presence of his worsening illness.
Kanai watched with concern as Alistar suffered through another violent sneeze, feeling utterly helpless in the face of his friend's deteriorating condition. He could see the frustration and discomfort written all over the demon's face, a stark contrast to his usual confident and sarcastic demeanor. As Alistar sniffled and rubbed at his raw nose, Kanai knew he had to do something more to help.
With determination in his eyes, walked up to his partner in crime and scooped him in his arms bridal style, out of the bed without much protest from the other. “SndFf…Where we going?” he asked curiously, but without much energy to even fight the other’s current process, wrapping his arms around the other’s neck.
“Hot soak…” nodding his head as he carried the ailing man to the bathroom and gently set him down on the closed toilet seat. “Undress,” he ordered gently, and while Alistar obliged, at the pace of a snail, Kanai began the one ritual he WAS sure of. More times than not he ran baths for the little mutt whether because he was sick physically or mentally, the hound knew that there was a stash of helpful remedies on deck. These ones, he knew did what. Taking out the bag of epsom salt as the water began to heat up, Kanai also looked around for a wash cloth, finding a clean one in the drawer. “Okay now…” the hound spoke out loud mostly to himself. Al sat on the toilet, naked now, staring blankly ahead with wet, swollen black eyes, he blinked them one at a time.
Kanai plugged the tub and began to concoct a comforting, and hopefully, sinus clearing, hot bath.
The steam began to fill the spacious bathroom as Kanai expertly poured the Epsom salt into the warm water, a soothing lavender scent wafting through the air as it slowly dissolved. Alistar watched with tired eyes, his body trembling slightly from the chill that seemed to constantly plague him now. The hound eventually finished his preparations, and then turned to face the demon, his expression soft yet still determined.
"Alright, time to get in," Kanai said gently, offering a hand to help Alistar into the tub. The demon hesitated for a moment before accepting the assistance and lowering himself into the fragrant water. Alistar let out a long sigh of relief as the warmth enveloped his aching body, easing some of the tension that had settled in his muscles.
Kanai sat by the edge of the tub, watching over Alistar with a mixture of apprehension and care. The red head sat for a moment in silence with his eyes closed and his head resting against the wall. “Hnnn…” he groaned lowly as he allowed the bath to sooth his aching muscles. “Nai?” he then suddenly asked slowly opening one blackened sclera.
“Yes, Donnie?” the navy haired male looked over at his friend curiously.
“Will you get in with me?” now opening both his eyes to look fully at the other, a slight visage of vulnerability could be seen behind them. The hound mulled over the idea for a moment before coming to a stand and slowly stripping his clothes off his body.
“Make room,” he answered at last, and while the red head obliged, there wasn’t a whole lot of space. Kanai sat behind Alistar, and the red head snuggled up between the hound’s legs, Nai wrapped his thin around the other’s torso while they settled comfortably into one another. Alistar let out a gentle sigh of relief, feeling comforted by the other’s body heat pressed into his back.
As the two demons soaked in the warm water, the tension began to melt away from Alistar's body. The lavender-scented steam provided a soothing relief to his aches and pains, and he felt a sense of calm wash over him for the first time in 24 hours. Kanai's presence behind him, his arms wrapped protectively around Alistar, offered a comfort that words could not express for either of them.
The red head leaned back against Kanai, closing his eyes and letting himself relax fully. The warmth of the water seeped into his bones, easing the constant chill that had plagued him. With each passing moment, he felt a little bit of his strength return, bolstered by the care and concern of his friend.
Kanai held Alistar close, feeling the tension slowly leaving the red head's body as they both soaked in the healing waters. He could feel the weight of Al leaning against him getting less and less restrained as the black eyed demon slowly let himself trust. Lazily, the hound reached for the wash cloth and began to gently run it up and down the demon’s chest, up to his neck and around his shoulders, the Anti-christ let out a softened moan. Neither of them were used to this sort of intimacy, maybe Nai with Draeko, but they werent typically this soft with one another. However, they both relaxed, and enjoyed this moment of vulnerability. The peaceful atmosphere enveloping them, the sound of water lapping gently against the sides of the tub mingling with their quiet breathing. Alistar felt the tension in his muscles slowly unwind under Kanai's gentle ministrations, his body growing heavier with relaxation. The hound's touch was a balm to his weary soul, a reminder that despite where they come from, moments of respite and care could still be found.
While Kanai continued to wash away the grime and exhaustion that clung to Alistar's skin, the red-headed demon found himself falling back into bad behaviors, his body slowly rolling into each motion as the heat of the water gave him the illusion of feeling well and the touch of the other was beginning to excite him. “Nai…lower…” he whispered breathlessly. Kanai paused for a moment, his hand stilling on Alistar's skin as he considered the request. He could sense the shift in the atmosphere, the undercurrent of desire mingling with the comforting warmth of the bath. The hound knew that crossing this line could change the trajectory of the night, but as he laid back in contemplation, the hound could not deny who he was down at heart either. Depraved. Both of them.
With a soft exhale, Kanai leaned in closer to Alistar, his touch becoming more intimate as he followed the red head's whispered plea. The water around them seemed to hum with anticipation, a charged energy threading between them as they moved together in the steamy bath. Alistar's breath hitched while Kanai's hands explored lower, sending shivers down his spine and igniting their sinful natures just as the hound’s bare palm met the red head’s stiffened length.
“Hn..nn..Hah..~…F-fuck…” Alistar gasped, noticing the better he felt sexually, the more needy he became to combine his illness with their actions. “Touch my nose…” the red head commanded, almost urgently. Kanai hesitated again for a moment, but the desire building in between them was impossible to ignore, and the hound simply loved to please where he could. With a mix of slight hesitation and longing, Kanai brought his hand up to gently brush his thin fingers against the red head's nose, tracing the lines of his philtrum with a tenderness that belied their usual interactions.
The weakened demon let out a shuddering breath, his body reacting to the dual sensations of pleasure and relief from the bath. The red head’s body trembled and his head fell back against the other’s strong shoulder before the pressure of Kanai’s tickling index sent him over the edge. Like tv static that ran up and down the central nerves of his entire face, the sensation over took him. “hHEH’TZSCHh’ue! hih’AESSHH’ue!” hips desperately thrusting upward into Kanai’s slowly closing palm. It was both exhilarating and humiliating to be reduced to a sickened humping dog, but it only made the experience that much more enjoyable to Al. He snuffled softly. “SndF…” before Kanai swiped his finger across the other’s leaking nostrils to assist. “So good…” the red head moaned.
“My…yours sure are expressive, Donnie,” the hound simply teased, earning a softly dusted blush across the other’s face. While Kanai continued to explore Alistar's body in the warm water, their movements became more urgent, more primal. The red head’s ass starting to rut carelessly up against the other demon’s growing length. The steamy atmosphere of the bathroom seemed to heighten every touch, every whispered breath between them. Alistar's grip on the tub tightened as he felt a wave of heat rush through him, his body arching into the hound's touch.
“Shall I make you go again, hm?” The navy haired man tickled and prodded at the other’s swelling nose, it dripped with anticipation. With a sluggish moan, the red head responded excitably, his hips grinding backwards for more friction. The hound’s mouth split into an almost half smirk, allowing himself the role of dominant as his index moved ever so gently to swipe and poke. Alistar hitched, catching his breath in the middle of his throat before it felt like he was being suffocated by the need to let go.
“H-Huh..” it started slowly. With every movement and tease of Kanai's hand, Alistar felt like he was rolling in a pile of a thousand tiny needles. The sensations were both painful and exhilarating, as if his body had never known anything else. While Kanai continued his teasing, Alistar could feel the acute awareness of his sickness combining with the pleasure, making every twitch and spasm feel that much more intense. His nose twitched, and spasmed while the overwhelming sensations consumed him, he released. “Huh’ESSSHHHUH! hEHh’eEZSCHHhh’iEW!” Loud and expressive the sneezes shot out of his mouth and cascaded like sparkles across the bath water in front of them.
He tried to remain still, to simply absorb the pleasure, but his body wouldn't listen. Every movement, every moan, they all served to heighten the experience at hand. Alistar's chest heaved, his skin breaking out in a cold sweat as he struggled to keep up with the intense onslaught, trying to be satisfied with what was given but ultimately craving more.
The redhead's hands clawed at the side of the bathtub, leaving his knuckles to turn bright grey against his tattooed flesh. Kanai’s breathing turned hard and strangled against the red head’s exposed left ear, which only proved to make matters more intense for the both of them. “Put it in…” Alistar practically whined as he pressed himself up against Kanai’s hard cock. The hound's breath hitched but he obeyed. He felt the tip of his erection brush against the sensitive entrance, and he could tell the red head was well and truly ready for him. With a silent prayer for resistance, Kanai slowly pushed himself inside, his muscles clenching and releasing in a futile attempt to mitigate the sensation. The red head's body writhed, pleading for more.
The water around them churned with passion, their movements becoming even more frantic, their mouths creaked open whilst rough, patterned huffs escaped them both. “Just like…that, Nai…fuck don’t….stop…” the red head grunted, pushing himself back to match each desperate thrust, water sloshing over the edges of the porcelain, crashing to the floor.
Kanai could hardly believe how far they'd descended into their own depravity, and yet the intensity of it somehow only added to their pleasure. He gripped Alistar's hips tightly in one hand, their bodies slamming together in a primal dance, their breaths ragged as they surrendered to the wild beast within them. The red head’s nose flared and twitched under Kanai's still persistent touch, the scent of their desperation and arousal mixed with lavender overwhelming them both. “I’m gonna fuckin….Hih….HIH’AEESSHHH’uE! hHah’AETTTSHH’uh!” His body lurched under the hound’s tight grip on him, splashing waves of bath water over the edges while his sinuses released themselves of pressure. His head throbbed between the dizzying effects of the hot water and pleasure all in one. Alistar could hardly hold himself together anymore, Kanai losing himself in his expertly timed rutting.
Unable to contain the monster that lived inside him, Nai moved his head to bite down on the side of Alistar’s exposed neck, his teeth sure to leave deep indentations as his hips worked forward, desperation taking over as he sought release. “AHhh…fUCK, Nai,” the red head cried out.
Their bodies lost all semblance of control, as if possessed by something beyond their own understanding. The passion was no longer just physical, but rather a fusion of fire and water, a whirlwind of intense lust that threatened to engulf them both.
Alistar’s hands clawed at the porcelain tub, cracking a few of his nails down the middle, all while the hound thrust deeper and harder into him. His voice lost in a strangled growl, Kanai couldn't help but feel vindicated for the brutality of their actions. With each harsh slam, with each ragged breath, the feeling consumed him, fueled by an overwhelming desire to possess, to claim, to conquer.
Their bodies shuddered and convulsed in perfect synchronization, as if bound together by an invisible thread. “Don-nie…I’m going to….” he tried to warn his devious counterpart, his rhythm becoming more jagged and unhinged as he reached closer to his climax.
“Cum…Cum for me Nai…” without hesitation to release the other of his restraints, he wanted to feel the hound blow inside him, in fact by this point he craved it. “I’m so fuckin’ close…” finally reaching down the black eyed demon began to tug and pleasure his own leaking length, their bath water now infused with pre-cum as they leaked to their finish line.
"Get closer, I can't last much longer," Kanai whispered hoarsely with a hint of sass against the other's ear. His voice was thick with need and arousal, a primal grunt that matched the clawing of his nails against the red-head's hips.
Alistar's eyes fluttered shut, and he moaned softly in response, his voice shaking with want. It was as if their bodies were a single entity, sensations coursing between them and intertwining in a way that transcended even the most intense of physical connections. Kanai could feel Alistar's heart racing against his back, the two of them lost in a haze of sin.
As the hound's hips continued to piston forward, Alistar's voice rose in a crescendo of unhindered pleasure. His hands clawed harder at the porcelain tub, almost as if he were trying to pull chunks of it away in his desperate need for a deeper connection. Their rutting became more frenzied, bathwater sloshing over the sides and splashing against the cold tiles.
"I'm gonna cum so fuckin' hard," Alistar gasped, his voice cracking with the intensity before he completely blew his load within the confines of their bath water, his body shaking as he hit his ceiling. “UNHOLY FUCK…” he cried out his head falling back against the other. Kanai's breath hitched, pleasure coursing through him like lightning. He could feel the other's climax ripple through him, a shared sensory experience of raw, unadulterated ecstasy. The hound's hips bucked wildly, propelling them both towards their release. As Alistar's walls clenched around him, Kanai felt his own resistance crumble like a sandcastle at the ocean's edge.
"I'm cumming, Alistar," Nai growled, his voice thick with lust.
Alistar moaned depravedly, his body trembling as he felt Kanai's hot seed spill deep inside. The hound's release bringing a sense of accomplishment that settled deep within his bones, they both panted as they tried to catch their breath, Kanai softening inside the other’s still clenching hole.
“Just….what the doctor fuckin’ ordered amirite?” Alistar chuckled a bit breathlessly to break the tension that was thick inside the bathroom. The mirrors had been all fogged up, the bath water was soiled and slowly starting to run cold. Kanai took in a deep breath as he relaxed himself against the cool tile wall.
“I think….we should….probably get out now…” the hound spoke tiredly. Alistar nodded in agreement, a light smirk playing on his lips. He slowly extracted himself from Kanai's grip, his body still trembling from the intense experience. As he stood up, he reached out and grabbed Kanai's hand, helping him to rise as well. Together, they made their way out of the soiled bathtub, the water now drained and leaving only a pool of slight residue.
They stepped out and dried themselves off with a nearby towel, wrapping it around their waists. The room was filled with a hazy aroma of eucalyptus lavendar and arousal, the scent lingering in the air like a misty veil. As they Surveyed the bathroom, Alistar couldn't help but love how the mirrors had fogged up, leaving a steamy reflection of the deviant act they'd just shared.
“I figure…” Kanai clears his throat and looks around before making eye contact with his friend. “I should probably attempt to make you the liquid meal…” the hound trailed off almost unsure if he could accomplish anything other than the bath on this evening. Alistar yawned lazily, stretching his arms out and feeling a bit relieved after the events that unfolded.
“Or, we could just cuddle in bed, have the pet pick something up,” the demon shrugged his shoulders with a look of carefree contentment.
“OH! Oh no…the pet…there’s chores I must proceed with before I can be released to lounge, Donnie,” the navy haired man almost seemed panicked, overwhelmed even. Alistar stepped closer and put both his palms on each side of the other’s face.
“Shh…chores shmores I’ll take the heat, as well as do the dumb ass chores when I feel better….for now…I need a caretaker, Nai, you can’t let me go to bed unattended….” The red head pouted, making a persistent and compelling argument.
“Yes, but, Draeko needs the house to be clean…” Kanai trailed off as he sighed deeply, his shoulders slumping in defeat. Alistar chuckled softly, leading him towards his bedroom with a sly grin on his face.
"C'mon, Nai, let's just get into bed for now, and I'll help you with those chores later. A little rest will do us both good, don't you think?" Nai couldn't help but oblige at the other’s persistent charm, knowing that eventually, he would be unable to resist and would succumb to the temptation of the warm, inviting bed as he’d now exhausted himself anyway. Al led the hound to his bed, pulling him in as they snuggled close together, Alistar resting his pounding head against the other’s strong chest.
“Fine…but you will have to face the pet’s rage if he returns before the list is complete,” the navy haired man began to lazily mull his long fingers through the red strands of hair that lay upon him.
“Deal,” Al snickered, wrapping himself around the other like a greedy leech. They laid like this, til they both succumbed to sleep.
The End

Yuma Month Day 13: What If
Now I had a really cool idea for this prompt! What if during chapter 0, Fake Zilch contacted Yomi via the intercom in Car 3 to tell him about the amnesiac detective and Yomi decides that instead of framing him, to use him and make him think he's actually an employee for Amaterasu Corporation. For a detective to actually stand in the way of his own people while never knowing the truth?
I'll explain under a read more but it is fun!
So Chapter 0 would happen the same except when Yuma wakes up and after talking to Shinigami, Yuma exits and Zilch speaks to Yuma, saying the job is done. Yuma would be confused when fake Zilch explains they're both Amaterasu spies and they needed to kill the others. Yuma is horrified but Zilch says that it's unfortunate he forgot and had to drug him too. They're done now though so he'll take him home and trigger his memories to come back.
Now Yuma doesn't fully believe him, he knows something is going on. Shinigami tells him to not speak out loud and to go along for now. Yuma tries to ask Shinigami about his past but she can't because of the rules of the contract. Her hands are tied and she doesn't know what she can do. She also doesn't open the mystery labyrinth as killing fake Zilch will put Yuma in danger, but she vows to reap his soul later.
Yuma arrives in Kanai Ward and Zilch informs Swank what is going on. Swank just goes along with it and Zilch takes Yuma to Yomi. They see Yakou, but Zilch just tells him that the situation ended in a tragic accident. Yakou tries to talk to Yuma but he is taken away before they can.
When Yuma is brought to Yomi, the leader is distraught that one of his top employees can't remember who he is. He gives Yuma an Amaterasu handbook to help trigger memories (yeah right!) and says he'll shadow fake Zilch and other Peacekeeper higher ups on cases and keep order. Yuma bows and says he will, not using the honorific -sama, which Yomi corrects him and says if he slips too much he may have to disappear as well. Yuma is freaked but tries to stay calm.
Zilch gives him standard uniforms that higher ranked Peacekeepers have and introduces him to Seth, Guillaume and Dominic. The others follow the lie and say they'll remind him of his old self.
Yuma and Shinigami make a deal to bring down the company from the inside, using this situation to their advantage.
The game would then follow the same things as before. Yuma would shadow Seth for the Nail Man case at the Clocktower and run into Halara (Who would still end up on the case somehow). They would be more hostile to him but Yuma would try and help them investigate behind the Peacekeepers backs. Same with the other cases in the game.
Yuma would also meet Kurumi who informs him as Kanai Ward's informant that he is not a peacekeeper that he has been led to believe. Yuma doesn't want to speak in case he is bugged but the two start trading in information via secret letters which they keep coded so only they can understand. Kurumi also lets the NDA know of this arrangement so they can work together on cases when their paths do intersect. Yuma hides these letters in his handbook which he keeps on him at all times.
Yuma would get a lot better at lying early on and be resourceful. Shinigami would also reap fake Zilch which would cause Yomi to freak out as his top advisor is gone.
Makoto would also try and get time alone with Yuma somehow and threaten him as he believes his double is now helping Yomi. Yuma however would somehow tell him that he despises Yomi and wants to see his downfall, he is just trying to navigate the situation he's found himself in and stay alive. Makoto still doesn't trust him but the two have an uneasy alliance.
Yuma would probably finally be caught by Yomi in Chapter 4, where it's shown that Yuma has been helping the detectives in the lab, as he's the one who got them inside and finding some of his letters. Yakou would probably protect Yuma as he is shot by Yomi and they manage to barely escape. Yuma would blame himself but would still solve the case. When Yomi is ousted the rest of the NDA would take Yuma back to the submarine where they reveal he was a trainee this whole time. Yuma would be relieved he followed his gut but still blames himself for Yakou's death.
Makoto would then knock them all out and then it would be the same ending probably where Makoto reveals Yuma's real identity.
It's not perfect but I just love this idea of Yomi using Yuma but Yuma still tricking him from inside the company.

A hotel with a human name! The name 叶, which belongs to about 3000 people, can be read Kanō, as it is here, or Kanai, Kanau, Kanae, Kano, Yō, Ie, Kyō, or Yasu. (Huh.)
Outside of names, 叶 means to grant or answer (e.g. a wish). It's read かな.う, かな.える, or キョウ. The radicals are 口 mouth and 十 ten, so for a mnemonic: "If you speak your wish aloud 10 times, it will come true."
For vocab, you usually see it in the intransitive verb 叶う [かな.う], as in 願いが叶う [ねが.い が かな.う], or a wish comes true. It can also mean to suit (a purpose), to conform (to standards), or to be consistent with. The transitive form is 叶える [かな.える].

This is r/RainCode’s opinions on the characters. Do you agree with these placements?
Tumblr media
This is pretty accurate overall! Seems like Reddit actually got something right for once...
Halara could be a region-dependent fan favorite. While they did win first place in the character popularity poll in Japan, who knows if they'd be guaranteed the same victory if a poll was explicitly conducted for the Western audience. While there could be contenders like Yuma or Vivia, Halara is definitely the easiest choice to put it in simplistic terms. They had the most marketing next to Yuma n Shinigami, they get plenty of badass fight scenes, they're written and designed to be conventionally attractive with their androgyny, and speaking of which--they're non-binary representation! It's no surprise Halara takes the crown!
Icardi is made to be hated by Yuma specifically, and his anger then transfers over to the audience as a way of endorsing Icardi's inevitable demise. While Icardi's motive is backed by living in a very awful place plagued by corruption that he desperately wanted to escape from, Yuma is understandably enraged that it was Shachi who bit the bullet. Yuma associates Shachi with Yakou, as they share in their same roles as leaders and goals of saving Kanai Ward. To Yuma in that moment, he's lost two people who took him in and offered to help him when he's confused and endangered, so like hell is he gonna let the culprit not feel his anguish. And so, we root for Icardi's death in sympathy for Yuma.
I know a lotta case-exclusive or minor characters tend to be forgotten, but I still remember the kid's name being Kei Colan! I blame the brainrot for never making me forget any details.
That's all I got for commentary, the rest don't need much explanation or I just can't think of anything witty to say. I won't tell ya which.

Ok ok ok
I'm slowly getting more and more consumed by makoseth,,
Some Headcanons:
• Makoto would be one of the only ppl who has ever shown Seth kindness, Seth wouldn't admit it out loud at first but he enjoys being around Makoto for that
• they prolly have tea together and talk about all sorts of things sometimes dropping more deeper topics out of nowhere and bond through that :p
• they grow plants together
• Makoto doesn't judge Seth for his quiet voice , he's understanding and listens intently when he speaks
• they go on walks at night in kanai ward when everything seems more quiet [and share an umbrella]
• Makoto would probably try to give Seth time off from his job as a peacekeeper to spend more time together [and to spare him from getting belittled and abused by Yomi 💔] since Makoto was lonely being in his tower and has grown fond of Seth's company
• Makoto comforts and reassures Seth when he isn't feeling well [he prolly tells fake stories to cheer him up]
That's all for now, I need to brainstorm more ☔

Hot take incoming but Makoto is one of the characters where everybody focuses on only one of his crimes, which is arguably actually the most justified out of all his actions, while ignoring pretty much. Everything else.
Like sorry but I don't think turning people into food was That Bad considering homunculi need human meat in order to live, they literally die if they don't eat it - it's either A. no humans get killed, and in turn all of Kanai Ward dies, or B. humans die and get turned into meatbuns, and Kanai Ward gets to exist. You could argue that the defective homunculi weren't really supposed to exist anyway but like, they do now so what. Makoto is also a homunculus, of course he probably sympathizes more with the other homunculi instead of the humans (that put them there in the first place) of course he's gonna choose KW over approx. a million humans.
If that was me in that situation I'll do the same thing fuck them bun filling lmao sorry I'm not saying it would be the best choice but it's one literally most people would choose anyway because like. What can you do, it sucks, moving on.
Substitutes for human flesh are possible to create (thank you ramen guy) but it'd require him to seek help from others which would require him to tell them the truth which fuck no. Like in that regard I believe he should be allowed to kill whoever he wants actually!
What actually makes me go 🤨 about him is everything else he's doing. Or not doing - aside from providing food and rain clouds, aka only a portion the bare necessities, he's doing absolutely nothing for Kanai Ward, especially Dohya District. He lives in the most expensive looking penthouse I ever laid my eyes upon, there is so much he could do with all of his billions, like, I don't know, at least unflood the Dohya District do you remember the Dohya District it appeared once in chapter 3 I believe.
Also your city has a poverty crisis the population's like 10% rich bitch working for ✨Amaterasu✨ 90% i live in a sewer i have like 8 shien. Please stop saying you love KW like every othet sentence and actually do something I'm begging you I'm poking you with a stick right now.
Say what you want about Yomi but he was so real for telling Makoto he's not doing shit, only ever instance in rc where the guy is like.... somewhat correct. I was about to say something else but I stopped myself because I have a healthy amount of Fear.
Apparently Makoto's love for all homunculi doesn't extend to Kurumi though, a teenage girl, after he just dumps her along with Yuma in the restricted area for no reason whatsoever, endangering her severely. He also risked her finding out she was eating human flesh for three years straight, the only reason she didn't go into the freezer was because Yuma was there to tell her there was nothing there. There was no reason for Makoto to drag her along to be the audience to his epic showdown with his DNA donor.
I'm not mad at him for that though, that was so fucking hilarious, the fuck?? What is wrong with him <3333
Since I know somebody is going to say that Yomi existing severely limits what Makoto can actually do, which is fair to some extent, but like... Was Yomi holding a gun to his head and telling him he's gonna execute the hostages if he tries to unflood Dohya? Was he? Yomi controls the peacekeepers, he doesn't control where Amaterasu money gets donated. Yomi (and by extension, the peacekeepers - Yomi is, as I see it, the personification of everything wrong with the Amaterasu Corporation cops peacekeepers anyway) can be blamed for a large portion of everything wrong with Kanai Ward, but not the entirety of it; and Makoto can't be, either. Blaming everything on Yomi is not only just wrong, but also the most boring answer possible.
Speaking of -- Makoto didn't even care about all the abuse of power Yomi was commiting the entire time. According to him, "If all Yomi did was throw his weight around, that would have been fine, but [forgot the exact phrasing, but he says him trying to leak homunculus information was where he had to step in]", so you can't even give him points for being a Yomi hater! Sad. Anyway here's how makoyomi worsties can still win
Do I dislike Makoto? No not really. I don't really care about him as much as other people tend to, but he's fun when you let him be his silly (ominous) self. The atrocities are a part of him and I decided they're funny. Actually wait I changed my mind I love him now.

aye, i've figured out what was bugging me following the ending of rain code.
as a murder mystery/ action puzzle game it excels.
i love each individual case, the fact that we START with an impossible mass murder and things only escalate from there, the fact that a lot of the mysteries themselves are figured out based off paying attention to tiny details and looking at the entire mystery holistically (noticing the train line map in chapter 0, the difference in the killer's MO across murders in chapter 1, the fact that the entire scheme hinges on the killer having knowledge of specific character's forte's in chapter 4 ect) and how those mysteries unfold in the labyrinth are really satisfying to play through.
i love the setting of kanai ward, the city feels guanine and lived in. the details about how their electricity is powered by the rain? the interactions between npc's? the cohesive design and small details that bring the different districts together? i love all of it.
the main issue i had with rain code was the 'main character'. yuma is the most passive, static progagonist i have ever seen in a video game, like, to the point where i'm thinking that he was intentionally written that way as a joke.
he's a complete outsider to the plot, almost all of the cases are solved separately to his own investigation, and none of his actions have any consequence to the outcome.
for example, chapter 1, helara solves the case on their own without any involvement from yuma, he's then forced to go into the mystery labyrinth because they put him on the spot to point out the culprit, and once cleared, the peacekeepers decide that they don't give a shit and are going to arrest the detectives regardless, before a third party falls out the aether to save our hero's skins. this set-up is repeated like, every chapter.
every chapter yuma has the same doubts as to if he's doing the right thing, before someone else reassures him that he's helping people and he's filled with a new found determination to solve mysteries. until he forgets that in the next chapter, and has the same doubts all over again.
his character arc is a flat circle, he starts off as the greatest detective in the world, loses all his memories and spends the entire game working towards becoming the sort of person that he WAS. only for him to regain all his memories at the end, but forget his own character arc in the process. as far as number one is concerned, he slipped on a puddle in the train station, hit his head, spent a week recovering, then got back to normal just in time to talk to mokoto. NONE OF THIS MATTERS! his relationships with the other characters mostly develop while in the mystery labyrinth, which everyone forgets about once completed. and the one relationship that does consistently change and develop, between him and shinagami, is ALSO forgotten at the end of the game.
speaking of mokoto, the final case of the game, the one that yuma is forced to solve on his own, consists of mokoto strapping the guy into a fairground haunted house ride, and demonstrating the plot to him. his master plan was to manipulate yuma to get the outcome he wants, and then succeeds at this 100% with no hiccups. then once the great mystery of kanai ward is revealed, just as planned, yuma decides that he would literally rather die than make a decision.
like i said, it feels like it was written as a comedic take on how detectives in mystery novels are like, passengers to the plot. it doesn't take away from how much i enjoyed the game, or how much i like yuma as a character, it's just really funny once your realize that he could have been replaced by a lamp for like 80% of the story and nothing would have changed.

Yomi Hellsmile
Getting into a relationship with Yomi would not be easy. He’s standoffish, rude, and devoted to his work. He would have to know you for a long time before even thinking about pursuing a relationship.
Yomi is surprisingly romantic. He knows he’s handsome and how to charm people. As director of the peacekeepers, he can take you out almost anywhere. His preferred places are ones where the two of you can be alone.
Yomi is the possessive type. Like the way Kanai Ward is his city, you are his partner. No one else is allowed to think about you he does. He’s got a nasty jealousy streak as well and isn’t fond of people throwing advances at you.
What he considers advances is vague though. Depending on how he’s feeling that day, someone just speaking to you in a way he didn’t like is eligible to be framed for murder.
Dates are few and far between. He’ll tell you early on that Amaterasu comes first. But sometimes he’ll surprise you with a night out. Yomi would buy out an entire restaurant so you could spend time in private. He enjoys more expensive tastes, so they’ll be decently fancy places.
When it comes to affection, Yomi is on the rougher side. Kissing would usually incorporate some type of biting, his favorite places being the neck and shoulders. He’s a strange man so he’s not above drawing a little blood.
He acts like he’s giving you some grand gift while being affectionate. Even if he’s coming to you for a hug or kiss, Yomi will tease you like you need him. As a fan of being dramatic, he’d go as far as calling himself ‘your savior.’
As much as he likes you, his sadism knows no bounds. He’ll be mean towards you, but in a somewhat loving way. If you mess something up, he’ll be sure to point it out, more than likely laughing. Yomi may or may not help you out, it all relies on his mood.
Want a kiss? That’s too bad, he’s much too busy to entertain you right now. He’ll come to you when he’s ready. Or jump on you the minute you turn your back.
There are two sides that fight inside his brain: one that wants to show you off to every and anyone, and the other that wants to keep his romantic life to himself. The first one usually wins as he can’t keep his hands off you.
If you worked at Amaterasu Corporation, Yomi would seek you out during the workday. Maybe asking you to do tasks for him like gathering files or preparing his afternoon tea. Or he’d have you accompany him on a homicide case. He thinks he can make you swoon by showing off his sense of justice.
If you were a regular Kanai Ward citizen, he would be a bit more private about your relationship. Crime is rampant there and he knows that there are very few, if any at all, people that like him. Yomi doesn’t know what he would do if some disgusting criminals were to harm you because of himself. Yes, he does, and it wouldn’t be pretty.
If you were a detective, it’s just a big mess all around. He wants to see your corpse hanging above his mantle yet craves the feel of your lips crashing against his so bad. Purposefully goes out of his way to be a nuisance in cases you’re working on. Yomi is not above an alleyway make-out session before sending the peacekeepers after you.

Martina Electro
Martina is a bit easier to court, but she holds herself in high regard and expects the same from her partner. She won’t accept anything less than what she deserves.
Unless you are in a position of power higher than hers, Martina would take more of a leading role in figuring out this relationship. She plans dates out weeks in advance, she is a fan of high-end café’s, shopping, and museum dates.
One fact about Martina that everyone is aware of, she loves talking about her partner. She’ll talk about you when brought up, she’ll talk about you unprompted, she’ll talk about you even if no one is listening. Martina will constantly sing your praises.
If there’s something to know about you, Martina will know it. She knows how you like your food and drinks to be prepared, hobbies, how you prefer your bed to be made. It sounds obsessive, and it kind of is, but this is how she shows her love. Her love language is being involved with your life.
Martina isn’t one to be jealous, she’s pretty secure in her relationships. People know her status as a peacekeeper and won’t come near you anyways. However, that doesn't mean that she doesn’t get possessive. Keeping you near her and in her grasp really gets her going.
Speaking of getting her going, she’s very reactive to affection. If your attention is a drug, she’s addicted to it. Holding her in your arms, kissing her anywhere, will make her flush a deep red. At first, her kissing is very clinical, like she’s analyzing you rather than kissing. But with time, she gets more enthusiastic, more relaxed. She doesn’t mind PDA either if you’re the one dealing it.
Despite her devotion, and borderline obsession, Martina is still her own, headstrong woman. If you do something she doesn’t like, she will be sure to tell you. Unfortunately, she’s stubborn by nature. If it comes down to arguments, it’ll usually be her way or no way until she cools off and gets more level headed.
Maybe it’s the homunculus DNA, but she enjoys your smell. There’s no real rhyme or reason to it. The familiarity of your scent is just something she likes. Borrowing pieces of clothing or spending time wrapped in your blankets are just heavenly. In the comfort of her own home, Martina would love to hold you in her arms, her face buried in your neck or hair. Watch out though, she has a bit of a drooling problem.
Motorcycle dates with Martina! Bring a thick rain coat, or not, she can provide one. She’ll take you out driving around the outskirts of Kanai Ward. There’re not many places that are very scenic, but there are a few places where the two of you can be alone. Make sure to hold on tight because she loves showing off with all types of tricks.
Post game, when she’s working in accounting, Martina will want to have a long talk with you. She knows the way she acted while working under Yomi was awful, and she wants to be completely transparent with you. However, working in an office now gives her more time to spend with you. If you surprised her with lunch one day, she might just die from joy!
If you worked at Amaterasu Corporation, she would want you by her side at all times. Follow her around and help at crime scenes. If you were a common peacekeeper, Martina would have you added to her team. Being her personal assistant is a fun thought. Her cute, devoted assistant that does as she says. But, that’s a post for another time.
If you were a citizen of Kanai Ward, she would be a bit condescending. She’s the beautiful vice director of the peacekeepers and you’re probably some poor office worker. She would talk down to you both unintentionally and intentionally. Nevertheless, she does love you. Martina would absolutely spoil you with gifts and lavish dates.
If you were a detective, she’s going to have a lot of fun tormenting you. Not much makes her happier than a cute face twisting in despair. Unlike Yomi, Martina doesn’t want you dead. No, that would ruin the fun too quickly. She would love to personally crush any hope you had of being a detective in Kanai Ward. She’s aware that she’s attractive and would try to use her charisma into getting you to join Amaterasu.

CHAPTER 1 - Man Door Hand Nail Fur Door (Comic)
Tumblr media
...aka the Zilara manifesto.
(tw: strangulation, suggestive themes) BOBA AU MASTERPOST: [link]
Yakou tells Yuma to go to the hotel and corral all the other detectives who have been sleeping soundly in the nice fancy rooms over there. Yuma, who got 3 hours of sleep on Yakou's creaky couch, says "Okay, sure thing, Dad." ((side note - wouldn't the train detectives have had rooms reserved at the hotel? Couldn't Yuma have had one of those?))
Instead of agreeing to meet up, they all send poor little Kokohead around the city doing side quests.
Tumblr media
Pucci wants to know if Kanai Ward has any good symphonies; recordings of classical music are all well and good, but it's no substitute for the acoustics of a live concert hall. Closest thing Yuma can find is Aetheria Academy's chamber orchestra program. Musicians in Kanai Ward used to be part of a larger regional symphonic orchestra, but since Amaterasu locked off the city, they've had to resort to busking. Pucci seems disappointed, but resigns herself to checking out the high school girls' next concert anyway.
Tumblr media
Aphex is cruisin' for a bruisin'. He spotted some suspicious movement in one of the districts on his radar (drug deals?), but every time he goes to check it out, he can't find out which people in the crowd are the suspicious ones. They must be afraid of Aphex's intimidating appearance, so Yuma goes in his stead to grill the people hanging around the square. Turns out they weren't dealing drugs, they were passing around anti-Amaterasu propaganda. They beg Yuma not to tell Aphex. Yuma goes back to the hotel to tell Aphex... who thinks anti-fascist action is cool, actually, so no need to do anything about those guys.
Tumblr media
Melami wants to know about the local fashion scene, and is very curious about the dronebrellas she's seen around Kanai Ward. She sends Yuma to see what the big deal about them is, and once there, he gets roped into a long winding sales pitch for technology he can't afford. He relays as much of this as he can remember back to Melami, but once she hears they only come in one color, she decides she's not interested. What's the point if you can't customize it? Just get a regular umbrella. Or a rain coat. That's a much better way to show off your personality! Yuma tries not to scream about how much time he just wasted.
Tumblr media
Zange shows Yuma a picture he took (with his mind) of a specific location in Kanai Ward, but can't quite remember where it was. Yuma has to go on a scavenger hunt to find the place that matches the picture and tell Zange how to get there. Zange assigns Yuma a numerical score based on how long it took him complete the quest (which is always too slow). This will be a repeatable quest/minigame with different locations every time.
Tumblr media
As Yuma is about to leave the hotel, Zilch stops him. He offers a more formal introduction (since, you know, they didn't actually meet aboard the train) and volunteers (insists) to accompany the poor useless trainee as a senior detective, to show him how it's done.
Zilch has four animal companions with him at the moment: three caged mice and a dog named Bosch.
He doesn't seem to treat them very kindly, though. He isn't careful handling the mice's cage, and he orders Bosch around like one would speak to Alexa.
Anyway, Zilch and Yuma go look for the last remaining detective, Halara Nightmare. Canon ensues.
They run into The Boy and accept the quest to investigate the Nail Man murders. Halara needs some convincing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the church, Zilch makes a new friend, or so he thinks.
Zilch tactlessly asks the nun if her ears are natural or not, and starts bragging about how well his own surgery went. For the ears and tail, that is. The Nun doesn't like Zilch's attitude one bit. She watches him use his mice for spying and gets freaked out. The nun threatens to kill Zilch but he doesn't think she's serious.
Zilch says that he didn’t expect there to be a Metal Fox Church here, of all places. Yuma asks him to elaborate, and he says they’re a denomination that exists elsewhere in the world. The church near where he grew up was much larger and more spectacular than this one. The Metal Fox is a deity known for its fortitude and cunning, that offers protection from “hunters,” or persecution of any kind. Zilch doesn’t seem to believe in its teachings at all. #atheistpride
Meanwhile, the dog, Bosch, sniffs around and seems agitated by something. He can place the smells of all the church NPCs around the scene, but there's something else, too. Zilch barks the order - literally - for Bosch to track whichever scent doesn't belong, and the dog goes off on a solo mission.
Zilch has a plan to catch the Nail Man red-handed, but he won't tell what it is yet. He needs to prepare some stuff. So in the meantime, Yuma and Halara hold hands at several different crime scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Shinigami keeps blabbing about stripping detectives, Halara fucks off to who knows where and Yuma returns to the church to meet with Zilch. Zilch leads Yuma to the nearby woods and reveals his master plan to lure out the Nail Man by taking a doll with a slip of paper on it to the forest, and writing the name of someone for the Nail Man to kill...
"Yuma Kokohead," of course.
Yuma is terrified of being used as bait, but Zilch promises he'll intervene before the Nail Man can actually kill him, it'll be fine. So Yuma the pushover gets tied to a tree...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Halara unmasks the cloaked figure to reveal the priest of the Metal Fox Church, as they suspected. The priest begs for mercy - he was only trying to protect the people of Kanai Ward by purging it of corruption (and letting an innocent man take the fall for it)...!
Yuma thinks he might not have to rely on Shinigami's powers this time, but then...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bosch leads them back to the church where Seth and his Peacekeepers are threatening Yakou.
Tumblr media
And with that… it’s Mystery Labyrinth time!
Zilch’s voice is back to normal inside the Labyrinth. He seems oddly relaxed around Shinigami - because he insists this is not real and actually a dream. #atheist4lyfe
Tumblr media
Yuma deduces that Zilch's name was written in the woods by the nun. She witnessed Zilch’s mistreatment of his animal companions and tactless assholery - but the thing that pushed it into murder territory was actually her recognizing the crest of the Alexander family on his fur coat. The full truth comes to light - the Alexanders have been known for generations as prolific trophy hunters. They “live alongside nature,” sure, but it’s a heavily controlled and subdued “nature.” This is antithetical to everything the Metal Fox Church stands for, so the nun, devout to her faith, believed Zilch to be an invasive threat to their way of life, and the peace of Kanai Ward.
And, since this revelation is taking place in the Mystery Labyrinth, of COURSE she gets a cool Mystery Phantom.
Tumblr media
The gang also, like, solves the actual mystery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then once they find all the evidence they unmask the true culprit and his copycat, and the Priest's and Worshipper's souls are reaped.
Zilch is horrified. Somehow he didn't expect this was actually going to affect reality. Shinigami assures him that he won't remember any of the Mystery Labyrinth anyway, so...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aaaaand eventually they do leave the Labyrinth. Halara is back to their usual steely exterior.
The masked priest in front of them drops to the floor dead. A scream from the church can be heard, presumably because the worshipper has just done the same. They go to check it out.
Tumblr media
Then… Yomi shows up. He intimidates the group and doesn’t seem to deem any of the detectives worth his attention… until he notices Zilch.
Tumblr media
Shinigami wonders if he recognized the Alexander family crest... but Yuma makes the connection and realizes Yomi might have had some sort of connection to the impostor on the train. That's pretty scary to think about. Was this the guy who tried to kill off all the Master Detectives coming into Kanai Ward? He seems dangerous...
Good thing Yomi has a devoted right hand to play around with. In front of everyone.
But anyway, regarding the Nail Man situation, Yomi decides to throw Seth under the bus, and punish him accordingly.
Tumblr media
Bye Seth! Or should I say... Steve. :noes:
After his near-death experience, Zilch has a change of heart and decides he doesn't need a fur coat after all (seeing as it almost got him killed). Halara accepts it as payment for their services solving the case.... at least Zilch's half of it - Yuma still owes them a small fortune.
And with that the day is saved. Yuma plays a bit of baseball. Halara has a comfy new bed for their beloved strays. And Zilch... has a lot to think about.
-----
HELLO BOBA FANS!!! Thanks for your patience waiting for this update! I hope you can tell I've been working on this very hard (in between assignments for cartoon college)! The post didn't even fit all the images I made for this chapter - I'll be sure to post the other ones separately. At some point.
This chapter was an interesting challenge to write, trying to hammer down Zilch's character - how to make him distinct from his impersonator, but similar enough to lend credit to the impersonator. It took a while but I think I've finally landed on a solid backstory. I'll be posting more about him in the next installment of Boba AU - Zilch's Gumshoe Gabs. Then after that will be Chapter 2! Super excited to rub my gay little hands all over that one.
If you've made it this far, thank you so much for reading! If you liked this, then please... I beg of you... draw me some Zilara ;_;

cuddling with seth burroughs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: seth burroughs x gn!reader
tags: fluff, established relationship, mention of yomi
Tumblr media
seth is always cold, so when you cuddle with him, you always wrap yourselves in a blanket!
it's always cold and rainy in kanai ward, so cuddling up underneath a blanket is always more comfortable!
seth only relaxes when he's around you, as his job stresses him out constantly. working underneath yomi, he never knows if he'll be subjected to his whims
seth speaks very quietly, but hearing him is never a problem when you two cuddle, as he's so close to you anyways
when you and seth cuddle, he falls asleep very quickly. after just a few minutes, he's out like a light in your arms
so you only cuddle when you got time to spare, usually in the evening after he gets home from work!

request. Vivia,Halara,Desuhiko, and fubuki`s s/o are killed in kanai ward and the peacekeepers try to cover it up. How would they react. I just like angst ok
synopsis: Life in Kanai Ward is tough. Fated to obey Peacekeeper's orders you find yourseld slowly losing your life to them. Your significant other has other plans when they find the peacekeepers had been covering up the traces between your death.
warnings: death, grieving, violence, implications that yomi killed you
pairing: vivia twilight x gn! reader, halara nightmare x gn! reader, desuhiko thunderbolt x gn!reader, fubuki clockford x gn! reader
Tumblr media
He is oddly quiet, he could feel your soul leave your body when the redhead brutally murdered you in front of him.
He grieves silently, he always craved death but seeing you lose your life like this makes it incredibly worse.
He also knows that the Peacekeepers had been trying to deny that they killed you for no reason which angers him a lot.
He keeps everything inside, the pain and the sorrow from you dying. He dare doesn't show it to everyone.
He vowes to himself that he is gonna take revenge. For you and only you.
Tumblr media
They are livid. They were already so protective of you from the start and when they saw you on the ground like that...
It's like they saw red. You were supposed to be alive. With them.
They also vow revenge from Yomi and they are more subtle than Vivia.
They are aware that the peacekeepers are trying to keep your death a secret and they won't allow that to happen.
After their revenge is done they spend all of their money for a special memorial of you.
You will always be present in Halara Nightmare's memory from now on. They refuse to let you go.
Tumblr media
He is angry. How dare this redhaired bastard hurt his beloved?
A lot of angry tears are shed. He doesn't wanna lose you and tries to shake you awake but to no avail.
He knows that the peacekeepers has been trying to cover up the mess that Yomi made and he won't allow it.
He will speak up in front of everyone and try to get justice for your name. It doesn't matter if he goes to jail or not.
He won't allow you to be taken away from him like this.
Tumblr media
Denial, she is in denial.
She approaches your body with shaking hands and begs you to wake up.
This couldn't be possible. How could she loose you like this?
She goes silent after that. Everyone in the agency is concerned because they never saw her like this.
But she is also planning to get revenge. She was never good at most things regarding remembering stuff but the image of you dying there on the ground while the Peacekeepers surrounding you never leaves her mind.
