the thing about kanej. sorry. anyway so i'm doing my edit archive and i'm labeling things. alina has her own label. genya has her own label. genyalina has a separate label. kanej has one label. kaz doesn't have his own folder, inej doesn't have her own folder. the thing about six of crows in general is that it is SO coupled up and frankly it pisses me off more and more the more i think about it.... it's almost like inej and kaz don't exist as separate characters because everything about them was written to compliment each other. which yeah that's sort of cunty in a way. but it's not as nice as having two characters who are fully realized characters int heir own right, who have separate lives and separate problems, and yet are still so entangled with each other they're in love. anyway. whatever.

Everybody Wants To Rule The World- Tears for fears.

Today I will be relating this song to six of crows.

"Most for freedom" - this part being about Inej because she wants to have freedom more than anything. Matthias because during soc he just basically wants to get the fuck out of there and be a Druskelle again (obviously his motives change throughout the books) Wylan who wants to run away from his father. Nina to 1. Break Matthias out of hellgate. 2. To go back to Ravka. Jesper to be free of debt and guilt.

"And of pleasure." Kaz is a money whore.

"Nothing ever lasts forever," - chapter 40. They were all supposed to make it. But as much as they all wanted to believe they are not invincible.

" Everybody wants to rule the world." - In Ketterdam a lot of the time people's main motivation is power. Jan Van Eck wants to maintain his wealthy lifestyle while using a drug that basically kills Grisha and is almost like torture but he doesn't give a fuck about the people he hurts because he wants to be richer and why would he care about people's lives when the cause of their death, jurda parem, is mostly benefiting him. Pekka Rollins wanting to be the boss of the barrel even if that means preying on innocent children and their naivety.

"There's a room where the light won't find you,

Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down,"- This part being about how loyal the crows are to each other and how they each find love within this group both types too. They find platonic love with the fact they all have a strong bond. They also find romantic love within their pairings. (Kanej, Helnik and Wesper.) This part could also be about the ending in which Kaz and Inej hold hands without armour and the "walls tumbling down" are the walls Kaz has put up to protect not only himself but Inej too. But he ends up breaking down those walls just for her as she holds his hand through it. (Literally and metaphorically.)

"When they do I'll be right behind you," -Again the loyalty within the group.

"So glad we've almost made it," - They didn't all make it however the ones who did are glad they did so they can experience life past this point.

"So sad they had to fade it,"- This might be just me but I feel like the crows won't be known as legends like Alina Starkov. Of course Inej will be known for her work of hunting slavers and being the total badass she is. And Wylan known for being a member of the merchant council. Jesper is reading assistant and partner and helping run the Van Eck business. Nina as a Grisha soldier (I haven't finished reading RoW yet so I don't fully know Nina's ending yet). Kaz of course is famous as dirtyhands and bastard of the barrel running a criminal empire. And Matthias will sadly be known as a traitor to the Druskelle. But they won't be known as "The Crows" the ones who broke into the ice court at least not by the public. And the fact that they were criminals and also a lot of them were considered "barrel rats" probably doesn't help because history is always written by powerful people and they would be able to twist the story however they like. Idk this might just be by personal opinion on the legacy of the crows.

Your comic is absolutely gorgeous! I love how you're able to show so much of the story with only a few panels. It's not an easy thing to do, especially when it's being translated from a book into a graphic novel.

Thank you and agreed with your last point! I’ve done adaptations before, but I really didn’t realize how hard it could be before I started this project. Like comics lend themselves so well to adding extra information that would be overkill in writing, but it sometimes can’t deal with small flashbacks very well. It broke my heart not to add the kanej scene that explains Kaz’s outfits, but I knew it wouldn’t fit the pacing as well as the book does it. So much to think about! It honestly makes me respect all the tv and movie adaptations I’ve seen of books, even if they don’t match the source material just right.

Watched season 2 of Shadow & Bone.

I am currently unwell.

Spoilers under the cut.

Disclaimer: I'm doing with season 2 what i did with season 1, so i just watched the Crows scenes first, then i'm gonna go back and watch it as a whole.

My thoughts are all over the place, but I had to put them out.

First, I loved it. I know it's different from the books in a kinda major way, but still.

Kaz Brekker broke my heart this season. His panic attacks when touched, little Kaz seeing his dead brother while surrounded by dozens of corpses. When he yelled at Pekka to say his brother's name. The hallucination of Jordie- it all gave us such an insight into who Kaz is and I loved it.

Wesper were so darn adorable, and I cannot wait for more of them. Also, I see the Kaz and Wylan potential and i want MORE.

Kaz and Jesper- It didn't feel like they had much progress, but Kaz knowing about Jesper being a Durast and letting him keep the secret and then saying he wouldn't share it? And then there was the whole convo before the Pekka takedown where Jesper is saying everything he thinks Kaz ought to, and the small smile on Kaz' face, the way he says, "yes to all of that" I just- *muffled screaming*

And last but not least, my favorites. The Kanej of it all was- I can't put into words how much I loved them this season. Him tending to her wounds even though he was shaking, his worry about her and how that made him push her away. The fact that he's been looking for her family. His bravery, when faced with losing her (tho part of me believes he asked her to stay because he knew she wouldn't).

"I will have you without your armor, Kaz Brekker, or I will not have you at all."

Let me tell you, during the conversation that led up to this, I was absolutely vibrating in my seat because I KNEW what was coming. I can't believe I got to hear these words spoken.

I'm just- so happy.

Definitely rewatching this season many times.

Some thoughts on Kanej this season (Spoilers!!)

First of all: I loved Kanej in this season. I understand that a lot of fans didn’t like that so many events from Crooked Kingdom were adpated but I personally see the show as an AU that freely includes scenes from the books. I, personally, can live with that because I think they really got the character dynamics . Kanej is still a slow burn and I love it.

They showed how Kaz tries to come close and then pushes her away. They showed Inej having hopes about them but tries to supress them to not get hurt. They both have their armors up and they will need so much time to figure that out.

That dream sequence with Inej realising that it could not be real… that broke my heart. Because she wanted it to be real so badly. And also, the way Freddy and Amita acted in the „I will have you without armour“ scene… my heart. You saw how much they want each other but can not be together yet.

But Inej knows what she deserves and I love that. It hurts to be pushed away all the time. For me it totally makes sense that she leaves at the end of the season (even if it doesn’t have the huge impact it has in the books, imo) and she will not settle for his crumbs.

However, I didn’t like the Tolya/ Inej moment. Not only because Kanej is the one and only for me but also because I am scared now. Will they ignore Inejs trauma over that? Like, it makes sense that she might enjoy some affection/ attention that Kaz is not able to give her yet. And a Tolya/ Inej dynamic would also be interesting to explore (in a friendship way HAHA) because I think they have a lot in common (and Tolya is an amazing character. Really, I love him). But I don’t want a love triangle, not with Kanej and not with Tolya, who is implied to be aroace in the books. And with Inej having flashbacks because of hugs or scents in the books, I really don’t see her just flirting with a guy she barely knows and everthing is fine and easy about that.

Aside from that I don’t want Inej to be focused on another man right now. The whole point of her going away is to be her own person and about her purpose.  Not her being focused on another possible romance thing (even if it is just flirting / teasing which I think it will be. Because, I mean, who gets in the way of KANEJ?!). Anyway, if they do that I hope they use it as a chance to explore Inejs trauma more deeply and for her to realize that she also has a lot of healing to do. That could be a possibility.

I also don’t want Kaz to be motivated by jealousy. Everthing he does for her is about setting her free, about her happiness.  At the end of the season it is heavily implied he wants to fight for her. Please don’t throw that away and make it about his ego.

Well, we will see what will happen for them (if we get another season and / or a spin-off). I don’t think they will throw away Kanej over that. I am just worried about this being an unnecessary subplot that will not do any justice to the characters. (Not that Tolya wouldn’t treat Inej very well, like he would. But still. I don’t want the Kanej dynamic to be ruined. They just mean too much to me. And I would also be happy about some ace representation.)

Inej stood there, eyes fixed on the bloody knife in her hands, hands trembling.

Kaz knew he had to do something. Move toward her, lay a comforting hand on her shoulder, tell her it was going to be alright. But that was not who he was, that was not who they were. 

If it were a trick, I’d promise you safety. I’d offer you happiness. I don’t know if that exists in the Barrel, but you’ll find none of it with me. 

One of the first things he’d said to her when he’d offered her this job. She knew what she was getting into, she knew she would have to use her knives eventually, but still, he couldn’t help but feel sorrow for her. Inej was brave and defiant, never faltering in her beliefs. As much as he scoffed and mocked her for her faith, although he hated to admit it, he admired her for it. Despite everything she had been through she still believed. Long ago perhaps there had been a chance of that for him too. But no, in his darkest hours, it was not the hand of any saint that reached out to him, but the dark promise of vengeance that pulled him from those murky waters. Inej though, she had resisted that voice at every turn, even with the sharpest set of knives in Ketterdam strapped to her chest she had never brought down the hand of judgment to make the killing cut. I won’t betray my faith She had told him. But tonight she had, in a church, under the eyes of the saints she held so dear, she had turned from them, for him. Any second later he would have been dead, head smashed against the cold stone tiles. With the choice between his life and eternal damnation, she had chosen him. He stared at her hands, they were loose on the blade, ready to fall from her hands at any moment, the last thing they needed was more noise to draw the Stadwatch to their location. 

“Inej listen to me.”

She did not look up. Eyes wide like a deer caught in the headlights. He wanted to take his hand and move her face towards his, force her out of this spell, make her look into his eyes and let her know she was safe. But that was an impossibility he was not ready to challenge. Instead, he repeated her name, insistently this time “Inej.” 

Her eyes finally broke free and met his own. Brown irises shining in the candlelight. His mouth went dry.

“You saved me life.” He managed to get out, stressing every single word to make her know that whatever guilt she was feeling right now, she did not need to ask her saints for forgiveness, and that… He didn’t know what this feeling was? Was he grateful, indebted? He felt the warm glow of something inside his chest. He pushed it away. 

He looked at her hands again, still shaking. They were so small, so soft. He wondered for the first time what it would feel like to hold them in his own. He reached out a gloved hand, it hovered there, just above hers, one more step, his mind went blank. What did he want to do? What was meant to happen now? He was so close he could feel her stuttering breaths on his neck, could feel her eyes looking up at him through her lashes. She was waiting too, a silent understanding. His hand brushed the tops of her knuckles, the waves rushed in. He couldn’t breathe. He was drowning. It was no use.  He could never be that person. Never be the man she deserved. Instead, he carefully took the hilt of the blade, and coaxed the knife from her frightened fingertips. It was better this way.

No time no see! 1 day till season 2 of shadow and bone!! I'm going to leave social media for a bit so that I can enjoy the new season spoiler free. But before that I thought I'd share with you something I did back in december! I see this pic of Yuzuka Rei and Hana Yuuki in Augustus the other day and thought "That's so kanej core" and decided to draw it but with kaz and inej instead! And then after finishing it i was so wrapped up in kanej feelings that I word vomitted this up at 2am, don't think I've written fanfic in 10 years! Thats the kanej power... The scene is inspired by the classic scene in the tv show mixed with my feelings from the books. Ahhh I love them so much! Can't wait for season 2! See you all on the other side!

i am on my second noah-kahan-lyric titled fic and i realized i never did one of the lists for his songs as the crows.

i am still working on his other albums, but i have a stick season obsession and i will be using just stick season for this list. and i'll reblog with my edits once i've listened to his whole discography.

kaz brekker -- growing sideways -- "i'm terrified i might never have met me // if my engine works perfect on empty, i guess i'll drive." -- between this song and northern attitude, this one is more hopeful for his happy ending, i think.

inej ghafa -- the view between villages -- "the things that i lost here, the people i knew, they've got me surrounded for a mile or two." -- this song is the happy ending of the story in this album in the exact same way that inej leaving ketterdam is her happy ending in the duology.

jesper fahey -- homesick -- "this place is such great motivation for anyone trying to move the fuck away from hibernation." -- this is about being angrily tired of your boring monotonous hometown. do not try to fight with me over this.

wylan van eck -- new perspective (& a troubled mind off of cape elizabeth) -- "you and all of your new perspective, now // wish i could shut it in a closet and drag you back down." -- i feel like this song is wylan in the first book, i cannot explain.

nina zenik -- all my love -- "i'm still out here with the pills and the dogs if you need me, dear. i'm the same as i was, it's all okay." -- it's the perfect mix of her before they broke matthias out of hellgate and post-ck. love.

matthias helvar -- stick season -- "i'll dream each night of some version of you that i might not have, but i did not lose." -- i'm sorry. the song really is matthias, but i couldn't resist putting that lyric as the fucking tag thing, especially because the song is mostly able to be related to hellgate/early soc matthias.

jordie rietveld -- halloween -- "collect every dream in these old empty pockets and hope that i'll need them some day." -- i couldn't be more sorry, but i could write an entire analysis on this choice.

kanej -- orange juice -- "are we all just crows to you now? are we all just pulling you down?" -- if the writer himself looked me in the eyeballs and said he wrote this song about kanej, i would believe him wholeheartedly.

wesper -- she calls me back -- "does it bite at your edges? do you lie awake restless? why am i so obsessive, hanging on to every sentence?" -- this screams pre-relationship wesper while they were pretending not to have raging crushes on each other.

helnik -- still -- "it's like i'm still here with you." -- again, couldn't be more sorry. it's funny that they call this man folk malone, which makes me laugh so hard, but his music is actually fucking depressing.
