Ayrıca, dizinin temposu ve senaryo yazımı, izleyiciyi bağlamaya yetecek kadar sürükleyici. Hikayenin biraz yavaş ve karanlık olduğunu da söylemeliyim.

Bir başka dikkat çeken detay ise oyuncu kadrosunun uyumu. Kim Go-Eun, Nam Ji-Hyun ve Park Ji-Hu, kardeş bağlarının karmaşıklığını ve sevgi dolu bir ailede yaşamanın zorluklarını izleyiciye çok iyi bir şekilde aktarmış. Özellikle Kim Go-Eun'un duygusal ağırlıklı sahnelerdeki performansı, dizinin duygusal etkisini çok daha güçlü hale getiriyor.

Little Women is a Korean drama inspired by the American novel of the same name, but let’s be clear—it has no actual connection to the original story. Instead, it takes the title and spins an entirely new narrative centered around family bonds, individual survival, and a critical examination of wealth, power, and justice.

At the heart of the drama are the three sisters of the Oh family. The eldest, Oh In-Joo (Kim Go-Eun), is a woman who has always felt the burden of protecting her family and works tirelessly for their well-being. Kim Go-Eun delivers an incredible performance—she's a powerhouse of discipline and fully immerses herself in her character. You can truly feel both In-Joo’s selflessness and her desperation as if they were your own.

The second sister, Oh In-Kyung (Nam Ji-Hyun), is a journalist deeply committed to her ideals. Her relentless pursuit of justice and truth makes her stand out. Although I used to think Nam Ji-Hyun was a rather plain actress, this drama completely changed my view. She portrayed her character’s internal conflicts with remarkable skill while staying true to In-Kyung’s unwavering morals.

The youngest, Oh In-Hye (Park Ji-Hu), is gifted with artistic talent and yearns to stand on her own two feet. Her desire for independence often puts her at odds with her older sisters. Park Ji-Hu does an excellent job portraying In-Hye’s innocence and complexity. Her dynamic with her sisters and her struggle to prove herself add an emotional layer to the story.

The drama’s core theme revolves around the challenges these three sisters face and the moral dilemmas in their choices. Set in a world where wealth collides with poverty, the sisters fight to survive both individually and together. The series delves deep into social inequality and power imbalances, offering sharp societal commentary throughout.

The production quality is highly impressive. The sets and cinematography are perfectly tailored to the drama’s tone. The modern cityscapes of Korea emphasize the coexistence of opulence and hardship. The pacing and script are engaging enough to keep viewers invested, though I must note the overall tone is slow and dark.

One of the show’s standout features is the chemistry between the cast. Kim Go-Eun, Nam Ji-Hyun, and Park Ji-Hu convincingly portray the complexities of sibling relationships and the challenges of growing up in a tight-knit yet burdened family. Kim Go-Eun’s emotionally charged scenes, in particular, intensify the show’s impact and leave a lasting impression.

Ultimately, Little Women is a bold and thought-provoking drama that addresses social issues with conviction. For anyone looking for a compelling series about family, individual freedom, and the constraints of society, this one comes highly recommended.

This is a weird cookie cutter nutter romcom drama that’s absolutely not to be taken seriously at all. Although beneath its craziness, the last couple episodes, there’s a nice message to not judge or bully anyone especially from hearing it from rumors or gossip. Both main leads have wonderful chemistry as well as the rest of the cast. There’s quite some uneven episodes. Sometimes it drag, then rushed very fast. It could have used better editing. Is it a perfect drama, far from it. On the other hand it’s a cute fun quick drama too.

Thoughts on hyung in Beyond Evil.

1. Who calls whom hyung?

With the help of the scriptbook, the occurrences I could find in which someone directly addresses another person hyung are as follows:

Oh Ji Hoon (to Lee Dong Sik): 동식이 형!

Han Joo Won (to Kwon Hyuk): 형 결혼할 사람을 왜 우리 아버지한테 물어봐.

Kwak Oh Seob (to Nam Sang Bae): 형 요즘 또라이 수집해?

Lee Dong Sik (to Kang Jin Mook): 형 먹으라고 사 온 거야.

Oh Ji Hoon (to Kang Jin Mook): 형.

Oh Ji Hwa (to Kang Jin Mook): 형, 이리 와서 앉아요.*

Kang Do Soo (to Lee Dong Sik): 형 지금 체포된 거거든?

Lee Sang Yeob (to Lee Dong Sik): 근데 형... 저 어떻게든 잡아야 돼요.

* Hyung is used when a boy/man calls another boy/man older than him casually, but in the past, some women (usually in their 20s-30s) also used it, thinking oppa sounds unnecessarily intimate and/or "feminine."

2. Why does Ji Hoon call Dong Sik (and even Jin Mook) hyung instead of ahjussi?

The age gap with which you can call someone hyung is not exactly set, but personally, I feel like it is around ten years or less. Mostly, that is the case in the show:

Han Joo Won: 27 / Kwon Hyuk: 34 -> seven years

Kwak Oh Seob: 52 / Nam Sang Bae: 59 -> seven years

Lee Dong Sik: 40 / Kang Jin Mook: 45 -> five years

Oh Ji Hwa: 40 / Kang Jin Mook: 45 -> five years

Kang Do Soo: 34 / Lee Dong Sik: 40 -> six years

Lee Sang Yeob: 27 / Lee Dong Sik: 37 (in 2017) -> ten years

However, Ji Hoon is 14 years younger than Dong Sik and 19 years than Jin Mook, but he still calls both hyung. Why? My theories are: a) even though he is much younger than Ji Hwa, Ji Hoon perceives that he and she are in the same peer group/generation as they are siblings, and because Ji Hwa is friends with Dong Sik (as in the Korean way), it is natural to call him hyung, b) Ji Hoon has been used to hear Ji Hwa and Dong Sik calling Jin Mook hyung since his childhood, so it has stuck with him, and/or c) either or both of Dong Sik and Jin Mook thought being called as ahjussi made them feel old, so they asked Ji Hoon to use hyung instead.

3. Why can I not imagine Joo Won calling Dong Sik hyung (even post-canon and in fics)?

Calling someone hyung is not just about age gaps; there should be a certain level of friendliness/intimacy between the two people. And in a lot of cases, it builds on time they spend together. Joo Won calls Hyuk hyung because they have known each other for a long time and are almost like family. Also, it might be worth noting that Joo Won was a teenager when he met Hyuk for the first time; he must have been angry at and distant towards Han Ki Hwan, but a boy is still a boy, and surely Hyuk is the one who helped and was there for the younger when he was "vulnerable." If they met after becoming a police officer and a prosecutor respectively, I do not think Joo Won would have called Hyuk hyung, even if the latter tried his best to be kind and helpful to the former.

Now, let us apply the same "rules" to Dong Sik. Joo Won has known him personally for only about five months. (The "one year" after does not count, during which they did not really interact with each other.) They were not even on good terms mostly. Even though they "mend" their relationship at the end, they cannot completely forget all the grief and regret. And of course, there is the age gap of 13 years. But most importantly, Joo Won's personality is far from embracing and treating others casually -- such as easy smiles, physical touches, small talks, endearments, etc. Therefore, even if he and Dong Sik start dating at some point, what I can see Joo Won using is "Lee Dong Sik-ssi" or "Dong Sik-ssi," not hyung.
