โ€œGyeong-suโ€ฆโ€ You heard Cheong-san say from behind you but it was like you were hearing it from underwater. The only thing you could hear was the sound of your own heartbeat.
And the thoughts that Gyeong-su might not have one soon.
As Gyeong-su wiped his nose to find it bleeding, he brought his hands up to see black and purpled prominent veins growing from underneath the cuff of his undershirt and he looked at them in shock, shaking his head and mumbling indistinctly.
He stood up and breathed shakily as he tried to speak while his chair skid across the flooring. โ€œHey, hey. Whatโ€™s wrong with me? Somethingโ€™s wrong!โ€
You stood up from your chair and stood in front of him. You grabbed his hands and he looked you in the eyes. You nearly started sobbing on the spot as you saw the whites of his eyes turning red but swallowed down the lump in your throat before smiling at him.
โ€œY-yoโ€ฆโ€ you tried the first time but couldnโ€™t get the words out so you cleared your throat and tried again. โ€œYou just need a t-tissue. Itโ€™ll be okay.โ€
He nodded as tears filled his eyes. The both of you knew you were lying but it was okay to be delusional sometimesโ€ฆ right?
Heโ€™d be okayโ€ฆ right?
If you just kept repeating that then he would be okay.
Everything was fine.
Gyeong-su was fine.
You were fine.
Right?
You frowned as you heard the scurrying of footsteps behind you while you reached into your pocket to grab one of the crumpled tissues you had from earlier and gave it to him but he couldnโ€™t seem to grab it and it dropped to the floor.
โ€œItโ€™s not trueโ€ฆโ€ You heard Cheong-san say from behind you yet you kept all of your focus on the boy who was in front of you.
โ€œCome on. Get rid of him. Get rid of him now!โ€ You heard Na-yeon scream and just as you were about to yell at her to shut up you felt someone grab you by the hand and pull you away from the boy.
โ€œNo, noโ€ฆ!โ€ You tried to complain and weakly pulled against the hands restraining you, already knowing who it was. โ€œSu-hyeok, heโ€™s not. Gyeong-suโ€™s not! I was with him for half an hour, heโ€™s not!โ€ You tried your best to convince him and looked up at him just to see him trying to keep a straight face while tears filled his eyes. โ€œNo!โ€
โ€œGyeong-su, stay where you are!โ€ You heard On-jo say from behind you which brought your attention back to the group as Gyeong-su had rushed forward but everyone stepped back into a corner to try and avoid him like the plague. โ€œStay back!โ€
โ€œI swear, I๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝm fucking not!โ€ Gyeong-su begged and your heart broke at hearing the confidence in his words faltering.
โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Gyeong-su. Please, stay back.โ€
You watched as the remaining bit of hope in Gyeong-suโ€™s eyes vanished like a flame being doused by water. โ€œIโ€™ve turned, right?โ€ He asked, his voice quivering. โ€œCheong-san, what do I do?โ€ He begged for guidance that none of you could provide, especially not Cheong-san who was dealing with the fact that his lifelong best friend was about to die at the hands of a virus that turned the kindest of souls into a flesh eating monster.
โ€œNo, no. This doesnโ€™t make any sense. Why would youโ€ฆโ€ He started, just as confused and in denial as you were when On-jo came up from behind him and tried to pull him away.
โ€œCheong-sanโ€ฆ!โ€ She begged but he just yanked his hand back.
โ€œLet go!โ€ His voice broke as he was finally coming to terms with what was written in blood red ink in front of him. โ€œThis cannot be true. Why would you suddenlyโ€ฆ?โ€ He shook his head, false certainty refilling his voice as he stepped towards his friend. โ€œNo, no. Gyeong-su you werenโ€™t-โ€
โ€œStep away. Donโ€™t come any closer!โ€ Gyeong-su yelled as he ran backwards in an attempt to put distance between his friend and himself. You stopped struggling against Su-hyeokโ€™s hold a while ago and just let him hug you to his chest while you watched in shock.
โ€œB-but, you were fine. Gyeong-su, you were fine!โ€ You tried to convince him and yourself when suddenly his neck cracked to the side.
Na-yeon looked around frantically as everyone stood there in shock as their friend turned right before their eyes. โ€œHey! What are you doing?โ€ She sputtered out. โ€œWe need to kick him out! Weโ€™re all gonna die!โ€ She screamed and you suddenly found the voice youโ€™d lost before.
โ€œShut up! He-โ€ your voice dropped from its screaming tone to one barely above being completely silent. โ€œHe just needs a tissue.โ€
โ€œW-whatโ€™s happeningโ€ฆ? Fuck!โ€ You could hear Gyeong-su desperately get out as he gripped his head like it was pounding.
Na-yeon ran over to the door and yanked the umbrella away that was blocking it from being opened. โ€œGet out. I said, get out!โ€
โ€œShut the fuck up!โ€ He screamed before discovering a newfound determination within himself. โ€œIโ€™ll leave by myself! Iโ€™ll leave. Iโ€™ll go on my own!โ€ He started sobbing. โ€œWhy would I bite you? Weโ€™re supposed to be fucking friends. If Iโ€ฆ If I leave, it will be better for everyone.โ€
Every step he took towards the door you could feel more of your hope for him to be okay being lost.
โ€œGyeong-su,โ€ Ms. Park spoke up and you looked over to see she had walked forward to the front of the group to speak to him directly. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just go into the recording room until we can figure out-โ€
Na-yeon interrupted her before she could finish. โ€œIf he stays in here heโ€™s going to kill us all!โ€
โ€œNa-yeon!โ€ Your teacher screamed at her.
โ€œIโ€™m just trying to stay alive,โ€ she whimpered out.
โ€œIโ€™ll leave. Iโ€™ll get out of here on my own,โ€ Gyeong-su grunted out while breathing heavily and staggering towards the door, using the table and chair on his way to support him. He turned to look at everyone around him but his gaze stopped on your shocked one for a moment. โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ he started sobbing more and your vision started to get blurry with unshed tears. โ€œIโ€™ll get out of here.โ€
โ€œGyeong-su!โ€ Cheong-san begged as his own eyes filled with tears that had yet to stain his cheeks. His lips quivered as he tried to remain strong in front of the group.
โ€œItโ€™s okay. Thank you for everything. Stay alive.โ€
Right as he tried to open the door to leave, he turned around and started looking at all of you in terror while thrashing around and mumbling things under his breath before his body contorted in strange directions, his bones creaking and breaking until he stood up and let out an unnatural roar and growled at all of you. Dae-su started walking towards him and both you and Su-hyeok tried to grab his arm to pull him back, knowing your friend was gone, until he shook you off and rushed forward when Gyeong-suโ€™s empty shell of a body charged at the group standing by the speakers. He threw him against the table in an attempt to save himself as well as his classmates. Just as the monster who you briefly viewed as your friend was about to attack again, the sound of a familiar tune filled the air.
While everyone was focused on the fight, Cheong-san had managed to raise himself onto the window and grabbed a hold of the rope, hanging off the side of the building with only that to support him. He sang their tune, the tune of Auld Lang Syne, and the body of his old friend came rushing toward him before Cheong-san jumped out of the way just in time.
The group had sat in shock for a while until some started to cry. Cheong-san had gone into the recording room and threw the table to the ground in a fit of emotional turmoil. On-jo had walked up to the door for a moment before deciding to walk back and to just give him space.
A gut feeling told you space was the last thing he needed right now.
You walked away from the spot you had been leaning against the wall with Su-hyeok. You had been comforting him on the loss of his friend as you knew he was grieving right now and didnโ€™t want to focus on your own pain. He and Dae-su had hugged and were currently exchanging tissues.
That was what you had learned to do the best. Block out the pain. Be the emotionless girl everyone knew and few loved.
You walked over to the recording studioโ€™s door before taking a deep breath and walking in. You took slow steps as you entered and saw Cheong-san sitting right underneath the large window on the wall of the door. Heโ€™d been crying until you walked in, that much was clear by his red eyes, glistening cheeks, and sniffles. Heโ€™d wiped them away and turned to look in the other direction of you. You walked over to him and sat next to him against the wall. You both sat in silence for a few moments before he spoke.
โ€œIโ€™m fine, if thatโ€™s why youโ€™re here. You can leave now,โ€ he spoke rather harshly but this time it didnโ€™t affect you as you knew he was on stage 2 of grief.
Anger.
โ€œGo,โ€ he told you, his voice breaking at the end and he pointed towards the door where you came from but you just looked at his hand before looking up to him.
You sighed and felt your nose and eyes stinging but pushed it down.
โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be strong with me, you know?โ€ He was taken aback by your words and looked visibly confused. You sighed before looking down at your fingers where they were playing with the hem of your vest. โ€œI know none of you like me, and most of you think Iโ€™m like my brother,โ€ you took a deep breath before you built the courage to look back into his eyes which looked even more astonished than before. โ€œBut in the short amount of time that I spent with Gyeong-su in this recording studio,โ€ you gestured to the mess in front of you as you looked at the book and string Gyeong-su had been playing with before everything went down, now places in the corner of the room. โ€œIโ€™d like to believe I was able to call him my friend, and Iโ€™d like to be able to call you one too,โ€ you looked back up at him once again to see tears had once again gathered along his waterline and he was looking at you with his lips quivering as he still tried to hold back his emotions. โ€œSo Iโ€™ll say it again,โ€ you grabbed his hand from where it was resting on his knee and gave it a friendly and comforting squeeze. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be strong with me, Cheong-san.โ€
There were a few moments where the two of you sat there and stared into each otherโ€™s eyes before a teardrop streaked down his cheek. Another followed after that one, and then another, and then another, until he had started sobbing and you brought him into a hug while hiding your own tears which slipped onto his shirt. You didnโ€™t say anything, you couldnโ€™t even try to think of something to say in a situation as bizarre as this one. You just held him in his time of grief.
After a few minutes when Cheong-san had calmed down, he wiped his eyes with his sleeve and pulled away from you. Standing up, he lowered a hand down to you so he could help you up and you gave him a small smile as you accepted it.
The two of you walked out and Cheong-san gave you a smile before walking over to lean against the window, looking out onto the field. This time you let him be alone as you walked over to sit down next to Su-hyeok who was on the ground. You mirrored his position with your legs bent and your arms resting on your knees. Your shoulders were grazing ever so slightly and he leaned over to bump into your shoulder ever so gently. You looked over to him and he smiled at you. You couldnโ€™t handle the softness in his gaze so you blushed and looked away, knocking your own shoulder into his as he laughed lightly.
โ€œThat asshole,โ€ you heard Dae-su sob after a little while when the grieving atmosphere set in again. โ€œGyeong-su, why did you have to turn?โ€
Na-yeon opened her mouth and you just knew what she was going to say next would piss you off. โ€œI told you all. He was infected.โ€
โ€œWell, are you happy now?โ€ Dae-su said as he looked at her in despair, you quickly stood up and put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing lightly. He looked back at you and had a bit of a shocked look which you internally rolled your eyes at but stopped when he put one of his hands on top of the one you had resting on his shoulder. You smiled softly but it fell immediately when Na-yeon started talking again.
โ€œYou were all wrong. Only I was right. What would you even do without me?โ€ Your head snapped over to her.
โ€œNa-yeon. If you know whatโ€™s good for you, youโ€™ll shut up and let us mourn the loss of our friend. Donโ€™t be heartless on top of being a bitch,โ€ you told her and just as you looked back at Dae-su, you saw her roll her eyes and scoff.
Just as you were about to talk again, Nam-ra started speaking. โ€œHey,โ€ she paused and you looked over at her. โ€œMaybe you did it.โ€
โ€œWhat?โ€ Na-yeon questioned her in an annoyed tone.
Nam-ra grabbed everyoneโ€™s attention as she walked over until she was standing right in front of Na-yeonโ€™s sitting form.
โ€œI saw everythingโ€ฆ Na-yeon,โ€ Nam-ra told her, accusing her of something that had yet to be revealed.
Na-yeon stood up to be face to face with the class president. โ€œWhat? What did you see?โ€ She asked and seemed to get on the defensive quickly which had suspicion rising in your gut.
โ€œYou are the one who did it,โ€ Nam-ra revealed, yet everyone was still confused.
โ€œWho did what? I didnโ€™t do anything to Gyeong-su,โ€ she defended.
โ€œI didnโ€™t say anything about Gyeong-su,โ€ Nam-ra told her, which kind of confused you.
Itโ€™s kind of inferred because we were talking about his death less than a minute ago, but okay.
โ€œKnock it off!โ€ Na-yeon told her, raising her voice a little.
โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ Wu-jin asked as Su-hyeok and Cheong-san - who were both minding their business - turned to look at the scene.
โ€œI didnโ€™t do anything,โ€ Na-yeon insisted.
โ€œWhile we were all watching Gyeong-su, you were in the back alone,โ€ your friend explained, then turned and pointed at the broken mop that laid against one of the cabinets in the room. โ€œYou wiped that blood with your handkerchief.โ€
She hesitated before replying in a shaky and slightly fearful voice. โ€œNo, I didnโ€™t.โ€
โ€œYou wiped that on the scratch on Gyeong-suโ€™s hand.โ€
At Nam-raโ€™s explanation, everyone had a shocked look on their faces, unable to comprehend that their classmate was the cause of their friendโ€™s death. Even you had nothing to say and your hand went limp on Dae-suโ€™s shoulder, only being held there by his own, which tightened on yours.
โ€œI did not,โ€ Na-yeon tried again to defend herself but it was getting less and less convincing as Nam-ra was insistent on proving her to be the murderer of Gyeong-su. The innocent boy who was everything good yet died for nothing.
โ€œItโ€™s in your pocket,โ€ the other girl voiced.
โ€œSo what?โ€
โ€œTake it out.โ€
โ€œNo.โ€
โ€œIf youโ€™re so innocent youโ€™d take it out and show us,โ€ you sneered at her and your hand closed into a fist while tightly gripping the fabric of Dae-suโ€™s vest.
โ€œI said no,โ€ she insisted while looking at you and slapping away Nam-raโ€™s extended hand. You glared and she visibly shrunk in on herself.
โ€œShould I take it out?โ€ Nam-ra paused for a split second before reaching for Na-yeonโ€™s pocket until the girl pushed her hand away and slapped her face, most likely a lot softer than she intended to.
โ€œFuck you! Who the hell do you think you are? Huh? Class president?โ€ She mocked before Nam-ra sent a hard slap across her face and her head snapped to the side.
โ€œYou never treated me like president.โ€
Despite the situation at hand, you smirked slightly as you saw your best friend standing up for herself and just being a complete badass. You let go of Dae-suโ€™s shoulder and went to lean against the table beside where he sat.
โ€œNam-ra, thatโ€™s enough!โ€ Ms. Park exclaimed as she sped-walked up to the two girls to break up the argument. She looked back and forth across the floor as she tried to figure out what to say before continuing. โ€œNam-ra, do you realize what youโ€™re saying right now? If that is true, it means Na-yeon killed Gyeong-su.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s true. Na-yeon did it,โ€ the girl confirmed. You looked over at Cheong-san as he watched. His eyes were filled with so many conflicting emotions: anger, sadness, betrayal, remorse. โ€œShe killed him.โ€
Na-yeon scoffed and rolled her eyes before she reached her hand into her pocket. โ€œYou fucking cunt,โ€ she exclaimed angrily before throwing the handkerchief in Nam-raโ€™s face. Dae-su had to grab ahold of your sleeve to keep you from rushing forward. โ€œThere. Happy?โ€
Nam-ra, who seemed unaffected by Na-yeonโ€™s treatment, reached down to pick up the cloth from the floor and inspect it. โ€œThis is blood.โ€
โ€œI wiped Gyeong-suโ€™s hand,โ€ she claimed and you scowled as you could see the cloth.
โ€œThis is his blood?โ€
โ€œYou canโ€™t tell?โ€
โ€œIf it was his fucking blood there wouldnโ€™t be that much of it, you cunt. Heโ€™d stopped bleeding 10 minutes into staying in the studio room,โ€ you told her and her eyes flashed with fear but her expression remained the same.
โ€œThen put it on your wound,โ€ Nam-ra told her in an attempt to show either her innocence or her guiltiness. โ€œWipe yourself with it if youโ€™re so confident.โ€
You could see her searching for an answer. โ€œLike his blood is so clean? He was a zombie.โ€
Nam-ra threw the cloth to the floor and stepped closer to her offensively. โ€œHe was just fine until you infected him with your handkerchief.โ€
โ€œNa-yeonโ€ฆ you-โ€ Cheong-san started and started marching towards Na-yeon until Su-hyeok held him back.
โ€œDamn it! It wasnโ€™t me!โ€ She screamed while crouching down and picking up the handkerchief, hovering it above her wound as she looked around for someone to tell her to stop, that they believed her, anything for her to not do it.
Ms. Park, ever the mediator, ran up to her and grabbed her wrist, pulling her hand and the handkerchief away from her scrape, trying to pull it from her hands but Na-yeon resisted. โ€œDonโ€™t do it. Stop it.โ€
โ€œLet go,โ€ she whimpered as the teacher tried to yank it from her hands.
โ€œI said to stop it. Give it to me.โ€
โ€œLeave me alone! Fuck!โ€ Na-yeon screamed while breathing heavily. She let go of the handkerchief and stood up with teary eyes. She looked across the room at everyone, โ€œI should just die too then, huh? Thatโ€™s what you want, isnโ€™t it?โ€ Nobody answered and so she sighed, looking away before turning back. โ€œWhy is Gyeong-su better than me? That dirty welfie pushed me,โ€ she whimpered.
โ€œYou little cheat!โ€ You yelled at her while trying to rush forward but Dae-su was still holding onto your sleeve. Su-hyeok abandoned his spot as the one to hold back Cheong-san to wrap his arms around you, restricting any movement of your arms while you struggled and kicked your feet.
โ€œNa-yeon,โ€ Park said after a while of silence, โ€œYou didnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€
โ€œSo you did do it,โ€ Cheong-san spoke, devastated, until he raised his voice to yell at her. Dae-su rushed forward to hold him back. โ€œHow could you fucking-โ€
โ€œI didnโ€™t kill him, okay?โ€ She insisted and you could hear your heart pounding in your ears with rage. Rage and loss. โ€œGyeong-su fell, but he got up and ran. Heโ€™s still alive. He didnโ€™t die, he just turned.โ€
โ€œYou mother fucker! Theyโ€™re the exact same fucking thing!โ€ You yelled out at the same time On-jo spoke.
โ€œAre you kidding me right now?โ€
โ€œStop ganging up on me!โ€ She whined and threw her hands around like a toddler having a tantrum. โ€œWhen I said he smelled, you all laughed. You all made fun of him too. Donโ€™t try to act all innocent now.โ€
You thrashed around harder as you felt your eyes burning and your cheeks wet and you finally realized you were crying.
It had been a while since youโ€™d done that.
Dae-su lost his grip on Cheong-san and he ran towards Na-yeon, Su-hyeok unable to stop him because of you in his arms already.
The boy pushed the girl to the ground and breathed heavily. โ€œHow could you kill him?โ€ He screamed while Ms. Park told him to stop it. Na-yeon kept her head down.
โ€œYouโ€™reโ€ฆ a murderer.โ€
Her head lifted and you saw tears falling down her face but you had no sympathy at all.
โ€œI have no friends at all,โ€ she whimpered out.
โ€œI wondering fucking why,โ€ you growled.
โ€œI donโ€™t need any of you. Fuck you,โ€ she then stood up and shakily walked out of the room, Wu-jin rushing after her just as the door closed and Ms. Park moved to stop him.
โ€œListen,โ€ she started and you were finally released from Su-hyeokโ€™s grip after you stopped struggling. โ€œNo matter what happens, you stay alive. Also, you must never take a life. If you cause someone else to die, life becomes meaningless.โ€
She looked at you all with a remorseful and fond gaze and you were sure you knew what she was about to do. โ€œAll right?โ€
โ€œMs. Park?โ€ You whispered shakily and she looked at you with a small smile before turning and running out the room, rushing after Na-yeon.
โ€œMs. Park! Wait!โ€ Dae-su yelled and ran towards the door and Wu-jin held him back to the best of his ability.
โ€œDae-su, donโ€™t go!โ€ he begged.
You had never felt so helpless. Your feet seemed to be glued to the floor and your eyes stuck to the door where she had stood only moments ago.
Dae-su started sobbing into Wu-jinโ€™s shoulder and your heart broke for him.
โ€œFuck!โ€ You heard Cheong-san scream followed by the banging of his fist against a computer. You didnโ€™t have the energy to stop him, even though you knew if he did it too much he could seriously injure his hand.
You were sitting in the corner next to Su-hyeok who had an arm wrapped around your shoulder, pulling you into his chest as you were too much in shock to cry; again. You saw On-jo walk up to Cheong-san as he was staring out the window but you couldnโ€™t hear their hushed whispers.
โ€œI feel like itโ€™s my fault,โ€ you said suddenly, only a breath above a whisper. Su-hyeok looked down at you in surprise and confusion.
โ€œWhatโ€™s your fault?โ€
โ€œGyeong-su.โ€
He sat up from his leaning position against the wall, bringing you with him, and looked you in the eyes. โ€œHow is it your fault? You didnโ€™t do anything!โ€ He tried to convince you, still whispering so the others wouldnโ€™t butt their way into your business .
You let out a sad laugh as you felt your nose burning. โ€œExactly. I didnโ€™t fucking do anything,โ€ you wiped your nose slightly with the back of your hand to subside the sting. โ€œI didnโ€™t notice what she was doing. If I only noticed and was a little more attentive then Gyeong-su would be alive! Itโ€™s my fau-โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ Su-hyeok insisted as he brought your head back into his chest to keep the guilty thoughts at bay. His heartbeat worked just enough for your soul to take a breath. โ€œNo, (Y/n). Itโ€™s not your fault. How could you have possibly known what she was going to do. You didnโ€™t need to be attentive at that moment because it was someone who was supposed to be loyal to the group and not fucking kill someone. That is not your fault. Thinking like that will just drive you insane.โ€
At his words, a small sob escaped your lips and your body started to shake with your silent tears as he trailed his hand up and down your back. His lips were pressed against the crown of your head as he whispered the reassurances that you were needing.
After you calmed down and wiped away the tears on your face with your sleeve, you sat up and gave Su-hyeok a grateful smile.
โ€œThank you,โ€ you breathed.
โ€œYou donโ€™t need to thank me.โ€
It was then you noticed how close the two of you were, faces only inches apart and you could see his eyes travel from your own down to your lips a few times. You backed away with your cheeks flushed and gave him a small smile. He seemed delighted with the effect he had on you and that made your cheeks burn even hotter.
โ€œIโ€™m going to go sit by Nam-ra, I havenโ€™t really spoken to her much in the past day,โ€ you told him, avoiding eye contact as you stood up.
โ€œOkay,โ€ he smiled and got up himself before winking at you and walking over to lean against the counter where Wu-jin was sitting. You took a breath to cool your cheeks and calm your nerves before going over to sit next to Nam-ra.
โ€œHey there, prez,โ€ you greeted and she met you with a cheeky grin.
She nudged you in the side. โ€œHey there, lovergirl. Howโ€™s it like in paradise, hm?โ€ She teased in a whispered voice and you covered your face with your hands.
โ€œStop that, weโ€™re just friends!โ€ You whined softly and she giggled for a moment until her face slowly fell back into a frown.
You didnโ€™t want to ask if she was okay because you knew the answer would be no. Nobody was okay right now, Nam-ra wasnโ€™t any different. Instead, you just grabbed her hand and held it in your own affectionately while she leaned her head on your shoulder.
You stayed like that for a while until Cheong-san spoke up and broke the silence. โ€œI didnโ€™t hear anything at all. I just couldnโ€™t hear anything.โ€
โ€œLike what?โ€ Su-hyeok asked but Cheong-san didnโ€™t lift his gaze from where he stared at the floor.
โ€œI mean after Na-yeon went out and then Ms. Park went after her. I didnโ€™t hear anything after that.โ€
โ€œYou mean, screaming?โ€ Su-hyeok asked and Cheong-san finally looked up at his friend to confirm.
โ€œYeah.โ€
โ€œMaybe they didnโ€™t die, then. They wouldnโ€™t have been quiet if zombies were biting them,โ€ Dae-su spoke his thoughts. โ€œThey must be alive.โ€
You let out a hum of acknowledgment while everyone else stayed silent and he huffed in annoyance, feeling left out. โ€œWhy wonโ€™t you respond? No one answers me. Iโ€™m always talking to myself,โ€ he looked down and played with his tie. You couldnโ€™t help feeling bad even though you were the only one to acknowledge his thoughts, albeit with only a hum.
Just as you were about to say something, On-jo beat you to the punch. โ€œI think youโ€™re right.โ€
โ€œForget it,โ€ Dae-su waved her off with an eye roll but she continued.
โ€œI didnโ€™t hear anything either.โ€
โ€œMe neither,โ€ Hyo-ryung threw in her own thoughts. โ€œ I was scared because I didnโ€™t know how Iโ€™d feel if I heard them screaming, but I didnโ€™t hear anything.โ€
โ€œCome to think of it, neither did I,โ€ Joon-yeong added.
โ€œThen Iโ€™m right. Theyโ€™re alive, right?โ€ Dae-su asked and Joon-yeong nodded in confirmation.
โ€œShould she be alive?โ€ Ji-min asked angrily and you turned slightly to look at her, Nam-ra still resting her head on your shoulder, unmoving.
โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Joon-yeong asked.
โ€œSheโ€™s a murderer. She killed Gyeong-su and walked out of here on her own. Is it even right for her to be alive?โ€ She asked angrily, using rage as a coping mechanism for everything that was happening. โ€œArenโ€™t you all being fake?โ€
โ€œWhat about Ms. Park? Should she have died too?โ€ Wu-jin questioned and Ji-min was quick to reply.
โ€œIs that our fault?โ€
โ€œEither way, weโ€™re responsible for what happened,โ€ he argued.
โ€œWhy is that? What did we do wrong?โ€ She asked and you turned back to looking at your hands which were interlocked with Nam-raโ€™s, unable to look at the emotion in Ji-minโ€™s eyes anymore. โ€œNa-yeon killed someone, then played the victim, and chose to leave on her own. All because we didnโ€™t listen to her,โ€ She defended her own argument and Wu-jin remained silent. โ€œIf no oneโ€™s on your side, is it okay to kill?โ€ Everyone stayed silent as they churned her question over in their brains. โ€œMs. Park acted like we were wrong. We didnโ€™t tell Na-yeon to go out there. We didnโ€™t tell Ms. Park to go out there, either. Why should we feel bad? What the hell did we do wrong?โ€ Hyo-ryung leaned over to hug Ji-min and comfort her but the hand she placed on her shoulder was shoved off.
You noticed On-jo looking down at the table and a teardrop falling down her cheek and you reached over to grab onto her hand with your free one, squeezing gently. Surprisingly, she didnโ€™t look shocked by your movements or the fact that you would do something like this, she just gave you a watery smile and sniffed before slightly wiping her nose on the sleeve of her slightly bloodied jacket.
Speaking of jackets, you realized you still didnโ€™t have your own after using it to cover up Hyeon-ju when she came into the classroom. Although it wasnโ€™t cold right now, you were sure it would be later, especially with the broken-open window.
โ€œHey,โ€ Su-hyeok spoke up and interrupted everyoneโ€™s thoughts. โ€œI feel weird saying this, but-โ€
He was interrupted when Wu-jin smacked his stomach. โ€œDonโ€™t say it.โ€
Su-hyeok groaned and took a strange moment of silence before continuing with what he was going to say. โ€œDoes anyone else have to go to the bathroom by any chance?โ€ Nobody responded. โ€œAm I the only one?โ€
Dae-su raised his hand slightly. โ€œI do.โ€
โ€œWe have to go, too, actually. But we canโ€™t go out,โ€ Hyo-ryung spoke on behalf of her and Ji-min.
โ€œI also have to go,โ€ you added in and everyoneโ€™s head snapped towards you, making you shrink back in on yourself and press your cheek against the crown of Nam-raโ€™s head in embarrassment.
Joon-yeong sighed before pressing his forehead against the table.
โ€œIโ€™ve had to poop for a while,โ€ Dae-su spoke up again and you held back the smile that threatened to take over your face.
โ€œDudeโ€ฆ thatโ€™sโ€ฆ ew,โ€ Wu-jin told him as he threw a pencil at him which was placed near his sitting spot.
โ€œWhy are you blaming me for this? Su-hyeokโ€™s the one who brought it up. Poopings not a crime.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s not a crime, but-โ€ Wu-jin told him with an amused face.
โ€œBut what? Donโ€™t you need to go?โ€
โ€œYes, I do. Not poop, but, you knowโ€ฆโ€ He informed.
โ€œWhat about you?โ€ Dae-su asked Cheong-san as he pointed at him, pleading for anyone to be on his side.
โ€œI donโ€™tโ€ฆ Pooping? No.โ€
He turned to Hyo-ryung. โ€œDonโ€™t you need to go?โ€
โ€œWhy are you asking me?โ€ She whined.
โ€œWhy are you getting annoyed?โ€ He shot back.
โ€œWhat do you want from us? We canโ€™t go out, anyways.โ€
Dae-su sighed deeply before his eyes caught on yours and he shot up straight. โ€œ(Y/n)!โ€
You smiled, amused, and Dae-su looked ecstatic at your expression. โ€œYes, Dae-su?โ€
โ€œDo you need to go? Do you need to poop?โ€ He asked, practically begging you to agree.
Your head tilted a bit as you looked up while thinking. โ€œYes,โ€ you finally replied.
His hands shot up in victory. โ€œReally?โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ you laughed and he deflated like a balloon back into his seat with a playful glare. โ€œI do have to go though.โ€
He sighed out again before he looked at the window. โ€œI have an idea.โ€
You sighed and slapped your forehead, knowing exactly where he was going with this and not liking it one bit.
Dae-su walked up to the window, leaning against it slightly. โ€œFirst, the girls and the guys will take turns.โ€
โ€œWhere?โ€ Hyo-ryung asked, not understanding the context clues or deliberately being ignorant in hopes of him choosing a different answer.
He looked at her before gesturing to the window in front of him. โ€œHere.โ€
She scoffed. โ€œYouโ€™re crazy.โ€
โ€œStop it, man,โ€ Cheong-san said and rolled his eyes at Dae-suโ€™s strange suggestion.
โ€œWhy?โ€ The boy asked with a slight whine. โ€œThe girls can wait in the other room, and the guys can just pee out the window.โ€
โ€œWhat aboutโ€ฆ poop?โ€ Wu-jin and you groaned out while shrinking in on yourself as you were sure you knew exactly what his idea would be.
He pointed at Wu-jin before looking back at the window. โ€œPoop. Wellโ€ฆโ€ He was silent for a moment as he thought before he slapped the frame in realization. โ€œYou can take your pants off and hang out the window,โ€ he explained and climbed up the window so his butt was hanging off on one side while he held onto the window frame. โ€œLike this.โ€
You couldnโ€™t help yourself from snorting at his demonstration. โ€œOutside!โ€ He went on as you hid your smiling face underneath the collar of your green sweater. He stepped down from the window. โ€œLike youโ€™re taking a dump off of a cliff,โ€ he then squatted down before continuing. โ€œLike this.โ€
โ€œWhat reaction is he hoping for?โ€ You heard Wu-jin whisper before you spoke yourself.
โ€œYou seem to know a lot about this, Dae-su,โ€ you teased. โ€œIโ€™m guessing youโ€™ve had a lot of experience with pooping off of cliffs.โ€
He looked at you with an unamused look and you couldnโ€™t help yourself from bursting out into laughter that everyone else joined in on as Dae-su rolled his eyes in annoyance. Nam-ra lifted her head from your shoulder and hid her smile behind her hand.
โ€œIโ€™m being serious!โ€ He exclaimed over the laughter.
โ€œStop being ridiculous,โ€ Hyo-ryung told him with an eyeroll after she calmed down.
โ€œBut someone has to hold you, so you donโ€™t fall!โ€ He quickly added when he saw a break in the giggles.
โ€œHow are you going to wipe your butt?โ€ Joon-yeong asked him.
โ€œWell, someone else should.โ€
โ€œWhat is he saying?โ€ Hyo-ryung facepalmed.
โ€œIdiot.โ€
โ€œLetโ€™s just hold it,โ€ Ju-min told everyone. โ€œIf the rescuers come-โ€
โ€œItโ€™ll take a while for them to get here,โ€ On-jo looked at her as she interrupted her before looking down at her hands woefully. โ€œIt may be the same outside of the school.โ€
Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The joking and laughter filled atmosphere was replaced with the sullen one as everyone thought of the situation they were still in.
โ€œI donโ€™t know how long weโ€™ll be stuck here, but my dad always told me to separate the bathroom from where you sleep if you find yourself stranded,โ€ On-jo continued, sounding like she had an idea.
โ€œWhat do you suggest?โ€ You implored.
โ€œWe create a makeshift bathroom for the time being,โ€ she said confidently.
โ€œWhere will we create a bathroom and how?โ€ Ji-min inquired, confused.
โ€œRight there,โ€ On-jo pointed to the recording booth and everyone turned to look.
โ€œThatโ€™s smart, if we do some things to make it more private it could be the perfect place to make one. Good thinking,โ€ you praised her and she blushed slightly as she looked back down to her hands while a small smile graced her features. You stood up with a slight hop before turning to On-jo and clapping your hands together. โ€œOkay, boss lady! First order of motion?โ€
She tried to hide her smile but failed as a small laugh escaped her. She stood up herself and turned to look at the group of girls. โ€œNam-ra and you guys, try to look for something to cover the window.โ€
They nodded before scattering across the room to find things they could use.
โ€œCheong-san and Joon-yeong,โ€ both boys turned to her at their names being called. โ€œMake something that can absorb urine and feces to use as a toilet,โ€ they nodded and got to work. โ€œAnd then the rest of youโ€ฆโ€ she paused, knowing they needed something else but not sure what it was.
โ€œA screen?โ€ You suggested and she snapped in your direction in appreciation.
โ€œYes! A screen.โ€
โ€œA screen?โ€ Wu-jin asked to confirm in slight confusion and On-jo nodded.
โ€œYes, a screen to block.โ€
Wu-jin, Su-hyeok, and you walked into the recording booth and looked around. The both of them seemed stuck on what to use but you saw something immediately.
You walked over to where a few filing cabinets were and started moving one of them so it was positioned parallel to the wall with the window. Going over to start moving the second one, Su-hyeok realized you had been doing the work while they were just watching. He slapped Wu-jinโ€™s chest before jogging over to you with a smile.
โ€œHow about you two move that one,โ€ you pointed over to another filing cabinet on the other side of the room. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll move this one so they can be โ€˜wallsโ€™ on each side of that one,โ€ you then pointed to the previous filing cabinet you had moved which was across from the window.
Su-hyeok frowned before moving over to where you were and going on the other side of the filing cabinet you were about to move. You reached over to smack the back of his head. โ€œI donโ€™t need help, idiot. Go help Wu-jin,โ€ you pointed to where Wu-jin was struggling to move the filing cabinet on his own despite trying to seem like he wasnโ€™t. Su-hyeok turned and rubbed his head where you smacked him before you could see the smile and blush that blessed his cheeks. He mentally slapped himself.
All she did was slap me on the head and call me an idiot, why the fuck am I smiling?
You laughed as you watched him walk away and he blushed harder at the sound of it.
Ohโ€ฆ thatโ€™s why.
After moving the two filing cabinets, you moving yours comically faster than the two boys did and rolling your eyes before helping them, you walked out of the room to see Dae-su laying his head down on the table. Cheong-san and Joon-yeong were almost done with what you assumed was the makeshift bathroom.
You walked over to them and rested a hand on Joon-yeongโ€™s shoulder as you leaned over to look at the basket. โ€œIs this the homemade toilet?โ€
Joon-yeong jumped at first before relaxing. โ€œYeah, weโ€™re trying to figure something out for where to sit, though. With just this, everyone would probably just have to hover above it.โ€
You nodded and looked around for a second before something caught your eye and both of them lit up. You practically skipped over to the seat next to Dae-su and grabbed his neck pillow from where it was resting and walked back over to the two boys.
โ€œPut this on top, I think this might be the best option weโ€™ll have,โ€ you suggested and placed the pillow on top of the rags in the basket.
โ€œDae-su's got a big butt, so let'sโ€ฆโ€ he said as he opened up the button that held the two ends of the pillow together and spread it a bit.
โ€œPerfect!โ€ you smiled and opened the recording boothโ€™s door for the two of them as they brought the basket inside. Walking over to where Nam-ra, On-jo, and the rest of them had set up a little circle of chairs, you sat in the one next to where Nam-ra was standing just as everyone was rushed out of the room by Su-hyeok who slammed the door harder than he probably intended to. You laughed.
โ€œDo you want to sit down? I can pull up another chair,โ€ you suggested to your best friend but she just politely shook her head with a smile. You held your hands up in mock surrender. โ€œOkay, if you say so.โ€
After a little while, it was your turn and you used it quickly before grabbing a hand sanitizer bottle from one of the cabinets and pumping a little into your hand.
โ€œOh, thank god!โ€ You heard and turned around to see On-jo, followed by Hyo-ryung, beside you. โ€œI was worried about that. Even if weโ€™re in a zombie apocalypse, I donโ€™t really want to go to the bathroom and not wash my hands,โ€ the bob hair cutted girl said in relief before holding her hand out. You put some in her hand and then some in On-joโ€™s as well and both grinned at you gratefully.
The bottle got passed around as everyone took a little and then started chatting.
โ€œAt least there are cops and soldiers out there, right?โ€ Hyo-ryung questioned hopefully.
โ€œBut if you watch the movies, they canโ€™t do anything either, right?โ€ Wu-jin answered with his own question.
โ€œIโ€™m hoping that this situation will be different from the movies, that this thing will have a cure and everyone outside of the school is doing just fine,โ€ you muttered with slight optimism. Hyo-ryung smiled at you and grabbed your hand.
โ€œExactly, and they always save everyone in the end.โ€
The door slammed shut and you noticed Joon-yeong, who had been standing outside of the door, waiting for his turn, had gone inside and Dae-su was standing on the other side with the tissue box you all had designated at the toilet paper in his hand.
Everyoneโ€™s face had turned sour as the smell of the recording booth flooded out with the small time the door was open.
โ€œShit!โ€ Su-hyeok exclaimed as you all plugged your nose or wafted away the stench with your hand. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just stay inside?โ€
โ€œDoes it smell?โ€ Dae-su asked cluelessly.
The door to the studio opened again before slamming as Joon-yeong came running out. โ€œS-shit.โ€
โ€œWhat?โ€ Dae-su asked again as Joon-yeong ran towards the window to get some fresh air. โ€œStop being so dramatic. It doesn't smell at all.
โ€œOh, it does more than just smell. Iโ€™m pretty sure the zombies will bust down the door just because of that,โ€ you joked and grabbed a piece of paper from behind you to use as a fan and blow away the air.
โ€œSit somewhere else,โ€ Hyo-ryung demanded as Dae-su sat in the seat next to her but he just ignored her and she rolled her eyes.
You looked up at Nam-ra and saw that she was just staring off blankly out the window. โ€œWhatโ€™s up? What are you looking at?โ€ You asked her.
She took a breath and hesitated before speaking her mind. โ€œThereโ€™s nobody there. There are no lights on in the stores and apartments out there. They all ran away.โ€
โ€œOr diedโ€ฆโ€ You added depressingly.
โ€œWhat do you mean by that?โ€ On-jo quizzed.
โ€œNo oneโ€™s coming here to save us,โ€ Name-ra stated.
โ€œWhy do you have to be so pessimistic?โ€ Joon-yeong asked as he shifted uncomfortably under the change of tone in the air.
โ€œDonโ€™t you know my mom?โ€ She shifted so she was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed over her chest. โ€œShe wouldโ€™ve torn the school apart looking for me, but she isnโ€™t here yet.โ€
โ€œSo, what do you wanna do?โ€ Ji-min asked in a bitter voice and Nam-ra turned to look at her, annoyed.
When you realized she wasnโ€™t going to reply, you replied on her behalf. โ€œI think sheโ€™s just trying to point out the facts, even if they are depressing,โ€ you looked up at Nam-ra to see if your assumption was correct and she nodded.
Ji-min turned to face you. โ€œWe all know that no oneโ€™s coming. So I think we should just figure out what weโ€™re gonna do next.
โ€œWe have to wait to be rescued,โ€ On-jo vocalized. You all looked to her and you especially knew that she might have the best knowledge of what to do in a situation like this considering she had some information passed down to her from her dad. โ€œWe canโ€™t leave somewhere safe to go somewhere dangerous.โ€
โ€œBut from the place where we are right now, weโ€™re not exactly in a visible spot for someone to see and rescue us from,โ€ you told her, knowing that even if rescuers showed up to save people, they would most likely go to the roof first before anywhere else if at all.
โ€œAnd what if nobody comes?โ€ Nam-ra added on and you nodded.
โ€œWe haven't been waiting that long yet,โ€ the girl insisted as she stared up at her.
โ€œHow long do you think we have to wait? Do you think we should wait until we die?โ€ Nam-ra asked in a slightly snarky tone which you winced at but didnโ€™t make any move to interfere.
โ€œNo,โ€ On-jo clarified. โ€œIโ€™m saying letโ€™s wait as long as we can.โ€
โ€œBut when will we know when we canโ€™t?โ€ You asked and On-jo just looked at you, her mouth opening and closing a few times before she looked down at her lap.
โ€œI donโ€™t knowโ€ฆ but thereโ€™s no way we can go out right now, anyway.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s probably because itโ€™s nighttime. Iโ€™m sure somebody will come in the morning, maybe. There are a lot of choppers flying around,โ€ Su-hyeok pointed out and everyone looked out the window to inspect the sky for a second before leaning back. He let out a sigh. โ€œLetโ€™s just wait until tomorrow, and weโ€™ll see.โ€
Everyone nodded in agreement when Joon-yeong took in a deep breath and ran back into the recording studio while plugging his nose which you and Hyo-ryung slightly giggled at. Su-hyeok looked down with a smile at the sound but you didnโ€™t notice it from how you leaned forward to talk to Hyo-ryung. You also didnโ€™t notice the questioning looks that On-jo passed back and forth between you and Su-hyeok.

Su-hyeok: I don't think it's ridiculous that I want us to be together forever. And get buried next to each other and that maybe a tree will grow between our graves and that two kids will have their first kiss under that tree.
Su-hyeok: Does that sound ridiculous to you?
Nam-ra: Yes, it does. Why are the two kids kissing in a grave yard?

so i have a funny realization
between these two groups
these two idiotic and stupid groups whom my friend and i love very much
Tumblr media Tumblr media
let me list down some familiar things and details though:
one girl has a girl best friend who dies
one guy is a former "bully" who stopped and just wanted to not be like that anymore
one guy is pinning over his childhood friend but is keeping the fact that he likes her to himself
one girl is a quiet person who is misinterpreted to be cold and just "focused" on academics
the two guys have chemistry and banter with each other and have actual scenes that may be taken in a very gay way
same with the two girls, except it started with a rivalry sort of sense
one of the girls is "different" for one reason or another but one guy and the other girl never gives up on her
after that one girl's best friend dies, the other girl slowly became her girl best friend in the process of the show
there's a weird love triangle-square thing going on
one of the main human antagonists is an absolute ass, has a mullet, and has the rivalry (aka the want to kill and almost does kill) towards one of the guys
one girl and one guy have never properly "interacted and got close to one another", at least hopefully not yet
forced together by outside life threatening forces
now, here's the real question
am i talking about the main four of st or the main four of aouad?
who knows! <3

Things I loved about "All of us are dead" in no particular order
Realistic portrayal of how teenagers would act during an apocalypse
Dumbass ideas but ingenious creativity
Ready to throw down at anytime
How the ugliest side of classism comes out during the midst of a crisis
The found family stays together and don't go their own ways after the disaster has been resolved.
The female friendships. The sibling relationships. The male friendships. It was so so well portrayed and so many good examples of how one should be.
The euphemism of using a Zombie Apocalypse to portray how society and elders and adults constantly let down the younger generation, leaving them to fend for themselves, ultimately leading to the new generation turning bitter. But ultimately the ones im power are either completely unaware of the consequences of their actions, or they do not care.

[A DAY BEFORE THE OUTBREAK...]
roses, tulips, lilies, they usually were in every storefronts window. signaling perfectly how the season was changing soon and quickly, the flowers were now missing and/or wilted. you were going to miss seeing the bloomed flowers for a while. winter took the invitation swiftly, the wind blowing your hair away from your eyes proved that fact. the sun still shines down onto people's heads, as usual, it confidently shows it still has a job to do upon the season changing. the solid road you were walking down had green grass sprouting from between the cracks a little, a visual of a younger you playing with it while your mother was arguing on the phone with someone flashed by in your mind.
couldn't recall what it was about exactly. โ€œy/n, you have two feet facing forward and yet somehow you seem to be walking backwards,โ€ your father retorted to your slow walking. you snapped your head up to see he was a few feet away from you, jogging to catch up. โ€œyeah, sorry.โ€ you mumbled. not in the mood to argue so early into the day. especially on a weekend, the two days where you could only worry about how you would get your dad out the house.
your first thought when your father had told you he was leaving to run errands, you weren't necessarily thinking you had to be a part of it. well, it seems everything you don't expect always seems to happen to you. adding this to the list. โ€œwelcome!,โ€ the store owner announced as you two walked in. you bowed when making eye contact and as you rose up the older woman couldn't help but send you, what only you could assume to be, a motherly smile. you gave a small smile in return, her warmth made it hard not to. โ€œhello miss, we were wondering if you had any chamomile tea?โ€ your father asked the lady with a high pitched tone, obviously trying to sound kinder than usual. you couldn't help the smirk on your lips when the woman quickly left her station and went to retrieve said herbs. you placed your hands on the counter and tapped your fingertips in a rhythm. โ€œso..โ€ you trailed off as your dad turned his head towards your direction.
โ€œwhy do you need chamomile tea?โ€ you asked while staring at the broken sign that stated no leaning on the small statues that were lined against the wall of the store. โ€œjust.โ€ was your fathers answer. you exhaled while closing your eyes, you were used to your father not actually wanting to have normal conversations with you. in spite of that, it was still in fact draining to not have a communicative parent. and the only times he did want to speak to you, was because he needed to ridicule you for every decision you made in this life. it makes you ponder about what you must've done so awful in your past life.
you turned around to lean your back against the counter and stare out the windows with your arms over your chest, your thick green cardigan making you feel comfortable even if the atmosphere did not. looking out onto the street you see three grown women pass by, then a boy that seemed close to your age, maybe a little older, on a bicycle slowly cruises by the windows. to say he was handsome was an understatement, your mouth slightly parted as he looked into the windows of the shop you were in and looked directly at you. it wasn't a certain look he gave you, just the fact he did stare at you before disappearing past the window where you could no longer see him. making your throat dry and your heartbeat a little faster than usual. your feet led you off the counter and outside the open door to where he had disappeared to. he was crossing the street to the corner bike store, parking his bike outside and entering. you blinked before turning back to see your dad now chatting with another older lady about different teaโ€™s. โ€œdad, im gonna check out the-โ€œ he waved you off, not even turning his head to spare you a glance. you shook your head from the sudden hurt and quickly jogged over to down the street to the sidewalk. your mind now focused on one thing and one thing only.
one someone, to be exact. upon entering the bicycle store you were greeted by a younger women whom you bowed to in response. you weren't sure if you fitted in with the rest of the people shopping in here. you still pretended to look at the bikes that were on display in the windows and throughout the store. looking up, you noticed a familiar tall and fit boy who was looking at bike tires that were hung up. swallowing in hopes of smoothing your vocal chords out from the dried cracks of anxiousness. you proceeded to walk slowly more and more to him, though one step came with an intrusive thought. โ€œyou see him and what are you gonna do about it?โ€ you turned swiftly toward a wall full of chains for bicycles.
your heart began to beat harder at that. what are you going to do now? you probably seem like a stalker now, he's obviously gonna recognize you from the other shop. you need to leave, you need to leave now. โ€œyou own a bike?โ€ a voice cut in to your own conversation. your head whipped to the side to see the said boy was now standing beside you and not where he was leaning over a few feet away prior. โ€œuh, me?โ€ you ask dumbly. he nodded with a smile that his eyes turn into slits, you blinked before answering, โ€œno i don't.โ€ oh no. โ€œi-i mean that's why i'm here. y-ya know, to buy one.โ€ the boy nodded slowly at your words. you weren't quite sure if he believed you or not. he then points to the chain you were once having a staring contest with, โ€œmaybe you should get the whole bike first.โ€
you nodded before nervously chuckling, to which a heavenly giggle escaped his throat. something that made your heart flutter at. โ€œcan i give you some advice though?โ€ you nod quickly. he smirks at your quick reaction to his words. โ€œdon't try and get one of the trendy ones right now, they'll only go out of style as quick and usually they break down as easily.โ€ your eyes stuck to his lips as he spoke to you. wow, he really was very handsome. you couldn't help your ears from gaining heat at the fact that he still stared at you as you did him.
โ€œyes, i understand.โ€ you softly responded with a starstruck face. โ€œgood.โ€ his voice lowered. the boy looked down at your body which made you shy instantly. โ€œalso those shoes are good for bicycling, so don't even try to waste your well-earned money on some new ones.โ€ you furrowed your brows before looking down. โ€œah, yes, i wasn't planning on it.โ€ you reassured him while mentally hitting yourself for getting into your head like that when just speaking to this nice guy. โ€œim y/n.โ€ you stuck out your hand politely. โ€œmy names kyungho.โ€ the name fit him perfectly you noticed.
he nodded before saying a gentle, โ€œsee you around then, y/n.โ€ it was as if your heart punctured outwards of your chest and grabbed onto his sleeve when he was walking away, but instead you said โ€œw-what kind of bike do you have?โ€ you asked for the first time in a louder tone. he turned with an eye-slinting smile before responding.

the sun was finally done being confident for the day and began relaxing by 6pm. its winds and clouds taking over for the exhausted sun. โ€œcome back for dinner, y/n!โ€ your father shouted while heading into the apartment building, you nodded before pedaling off on your new bike that you had recently bought the next day. you sold most of your old toys to nearby neighbors and finally, 19 hours later and you purchased the black version of the bike kyungho had. you pedalled off down a street, the feeling almost rejuvenating. not having a specific path you wanted to take, you just followed the sun as it set and the skies soon turned orangey-pink. you cut through wind so fast, your clothes were practically second skin.
it was different. very much different. it made you wonder as to why you never thought of purchasing one of these before. it beats walking, that's for sure.
while you skidded down many empty streets and just enjoyed the outdoors for once, you came across and intersection, you slowed down and drifted onto the sidewalk. slowly cruising towards the crosswalk. thats when you noticed it was the same intersection where suhyeok saved you from. a faint hint of your ears getting warmer made you grow angry. you knew one-hundred percent then, that you couldn't control who you liked. because even when you don't want to, that prick still somehow squirms his way into your arteries like a blood clot. an infectious disease that can only be cured if you rip your own heart out before he consumes it. shaking your head in order to clear your mind, your ears pick up laughter. you turn to see a chicken restaurant and eating inside were a few of your classmates. onjo, cheongsan, isak, and gyeongsu. they looked rather happy.. and warm.
you looked away in defeat, leaning onto your bike and rubbing your head. for once in your life you were not gonna live the same day over and over. tomorrow, you were going to change for good, that was something only you knew at the time, but soon everyone would see it too.
meanwhile, in cheongsanโ€™s chicken, โ€œyah, is that y/n-ah?โ€ isak spoke as she covered her mouth from keeping chicken spewing out. everyone turned to see the young boy with his head in his hands and brushing his hair away from his face in frustration. cheongsan and gyeongsu looked back at each other before returning to their food. onjo looked at the two boys who were stuffing their faces once again, โ€œwe should invite him to eat with us,โ€ she began and continued when everyone looked at her with surprised faces. โ€œhes always alone. no one should be alone throughout high-school, it makes school even more unbearable. plus, isn't he woojin-ahโ€™s friend?โ€ she asked and immediately was met with gyeongsu shaking his head slowly in a grimace. โ€œhe tried to ..befriend him again but i think woojin just didnt wanna be apart of drama.โ€ he explained while now picking at his food.
โ€œdrama?โ€ onjo asked with a slight undertone. almost accusing cheongsan he had done something wrong from just answering her question. โ€œy-yeah, you know about y/n and myunghwan..โ€ cheongsan trailed off as onjo became angrier by the second. โ€œy/n was just being himself, this whole town needs to grow up already. he never hurt anyone, he just had a stupid crush and wanted to tell him.โ€ she stated with fire in her eyes. isak raised her eyebrows at her friends tangent. โ€œdo any of you know the guy?โ€ isak carefully spoke up. everyone then proceeded to shake their head. โ€œonly y/n knows.โ€ onjo answered while now pushing away her chicken while she tried to calm down. โ€œand myunghwan and his goons.โ€ gyeongsu added while looking down at his fork nonchalantly.
โ€œthat guy that snitched should go to hell.โ€ isak stated with crossed arms and a small pout. finally, understanding y/n, when her friend put the situation in perspective for her. โ€œyeah, i will never like a guy like that.โ€ onjo announced seriously. cheongsan gulped and gawked at his childhood friend before continung to eat his food.
everyone was quiet, seemingly done with the conversation until gyeongsu spoke up, โ€œif youre still a little angry, can i have that piece?โ€

โ€œStudents?โ€ A gruff voice calls repeatedly as the first few forms of address remain unanswered.ย
Su-Hyeokโ€™s eyes flutter open and he raises his head, fully aware of the neck cramp sure to bother him later on. Another thing he realizes, is that you had fallen asleep leaning on his shoulder, and he had drifted off with his head on yours. He smiles to himself momentarily, seeing you still dead to the world.ย
โ€œKids, this is the last stop.โ€ย
Finally turning his attention to the bus driver, Su-Hyeok looks up sheepishly. โ€œIโ€™m pretty sure we missed our destination.โ€
The bus driver chuckles as Su-Hyeok scratches his head in confusion. โ€œWhere were you and your girlfriend supposed to disembark at?โ€ย
Seeing it unnecessary to deny the nature of your supposed relationship that everyone unanimously agreed on, and especially with the crush he has been harboring for years, Su-Hyeok lets himself have at least thisโ€”no matter how untrueโ€”if not your reciprocated feelings.ย ย
โ€œOur history class planned a field trip for an overnight hanok stay, and the informational tour was supposed to begin hours ago. Saying we missed half of it already is probably a sore understatement.โ€ย
โ€œSky Guesthouse?โ€
Before Su-Hyeok can confirm, you stir, confused at the darkened sky outside of the windows. The last time you were awake, it was still bright out. โ€œHave we arrived?โ€
โ€œUhโ€ฆyou seeโ€ฆabout thatโ€”"
โ€œWe missed it didnโ€™t we?โ€ You turn to your best friend, arms crossed.ย
โ€œThe guesthouse should only be a few blocks away,โ€ the bus driver intervenes. โ€œBoth of you fell asleep for the entirety of the route, so donโ€™t be too hard on your boyfriend here,โ€ he jokes.ย
Before you get a chance to refute, Su-Hyeok elbows you playfully. โ€œSee? This kind gisanim is vouching for me.โ€ย
You roll your eyes and begin to stand up, thankful you were in the aisle seat, and quickly grab your things. As you bow to the driver in gratitude and head towards the front of the bus, you can hear Su-Hyeok scrambling for his own belongings as he chases after you. โ€œThank you for putting up with him, Ahjussi!โ€ You throw over your shoulder with a wave.ย
โ€œIโ€™ll have you know itโ€™s fun to be around me!โ€ Su-Hyeok defends, mock offended.ย
You ignore him trailing behind you and check your phone, just to see it blown up with multiple missed calls and unread messages from your friends, mainly On-Jo. โ€œI need to stop complying to your every whim, Su-Hyeok,โ€ you state in exasperation, hurriedly jumping off the bus. โ€œWhy did I agree to go with you on this roundabout trip when Cheong-Sanโ€™s mom offered to drop us off? You know how much she adores her sonโ€™s childhood friends.โ€ย
Su-Hyeok matches your steps, knocking his shoulder into yours repeatedly, until you canโ€™t help but smile. โ€œOh, I donโ€™t know,โ€ he begins to answer your question. โ€œMaybe you just adore me more.โ€ย
โ€œDo not!โ€ You disagree half-heartedly as Su-Hyeok flashes you a crooked smile, and you have to shut your heart down.ย Curse good-looking people.ย
The tiled roof of the guesthouse slowly come into view, the buildings appearing grander as you draw nearer. Just as you reach the wooden gate, your phone dings with another text.ย Su-Hyeok peers over your shoulder as you read the text out loud. โ€œSo apparently the tour ended long ago, as we expected and everyone already has their assigned rooms. I-Sak, On-Jo, and Nam-Ra are in one room, Cheong-San and Gyeong-Su in another, Wu-Jin, Dae-Su, and Joon-Yeong in the third, Ji-Min and Hyo-Ryung in a smaller room since itโ€™s just the two of themโ€ฆand Na-Yeon is by herself because she despises everyone.โ€ย
Su-Hyeok laughs. โ€œSounds about right.โ€
You smile to yourself at the way On-Jo was giving you a rundown of everything that happened during the few hours you had missed. It was quite easy to sense her fond annoyance when she talked about Cheong-San messing with her all day through the rows of animated emojis she sent you.ย
โ€œDo you think there are still empty rooms left for us?โ€ย Su-Hyeok questions.
โ€œWith a place this huge, Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™ll find lodging for us one way or another.โ€ย
As the two of you are about to open the door, Ms. Park beats you to it from the other side.ย โ€œY/N, Su-Hyeok!โ€ Her eyes widen in surprise. โ€œI wasnโ€™t expecting your presence but Iโ€™m so glad you guys finally made it.โ€ Ms. Park looks over the two of you, relief washing over her features after confirming nothing was out of the ordinary.ย
โ€œWeโ€™re so sorry, seonsaengnim,โ€ you apologize. โ€œYou mustโ€™ve been worried, especially since youโ€™re only a replacement teacher chaperone. Iโ€™d rather you have enjoyed this field trip too instead of looking for missing students.โ€ย
Ms. Park shakes her head, smiling. โ€œNo need for all that, Y/N. We planned this just so you kids can relax after exams. Donโ€™t feel guilty for running a little late; itโ€™s supposed to be a fun, enjoyable day after all. I wonโ€™t hold it against you.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s not โ€˜weโ€™ is it, Ms. Park?โ€ You grin knowingly. โ€œYouโ€™re the one who suggested this to the board of teachers, right?โ€ย
โ€œMaybe, maybe not.โ€ She winks at you and you laugh. If only the other teachers genuinely cared for their students like Ms. Park did, perhaps youโ€™d be more inclined to put them in higher regards.ย
โ€œWe didnโ€™t miss anything too fun, right? Just the tour?โ€ Su-Hyeok asks.ย
โ€œOf course, you would care more about the fun and less on the educational purpose, Bare-Su,โ€ Ms. Park teases.ย
โ€œThatโ€™s why we didnโ€™t missed our stop,โ€ you add fuel to the fire.ย
โ€œYouโ€™re being a bad influence on one of my top students?โ€ Ms. Park stands akimbo, and you join in, happy to put Su-Hyeok on the spot.ย
โ€œMy favorite teacher and my best friend are tag-teaming to make fun of me? Iโ€™m hurt.โ€ Su-Hyeok puts a hand on his chest dramatically.ย
โ€œYou deserve it.โ€ You stick your tongue out at him before Ms. Park quickly ushers you both inside.
โ€œItโ€™s much too late for us to stand out here in the cold. Weโ€™ll catch a draft at this rate.โ€
Despite the dark, as you look around, the authentically photogenic architecture captures your attention, even more so under the faint lighting from traditional lanterns hanging from the 14th century style curved roofs.
โ€œSince everyoneโ€™s already gone to their respective quarters and we donโ€™t want to disturb the other occupants, you two can share that room over there.โ€ Ms. Park points to one located in the corner. โ€œEven though it gives you a humble living experience of the Joseon Dynasty, I donโ€™t think you will mind sleeping on the timber floors as thereโ€™s enough cozy quilts to go around, but Iโ€™ll go grab a few more for you just like I did for the others, in case you get cold at night. There should also be simple beds in there as well, no different from all the rooms here, if that makes you more comfortable and easier to sleep in.โ€
โ€œIโ€™ll help you Ms. Park. Weโ€™ve already kept you waiting, itโ€™s the least I can do.โ€ Su-Hyeok offers to go get extra blankets from the hosts, gesturing for you to go ahead and check out the room first.
As you approach the timber frame of the wooden doors, your silhouette casts a shadow on the rice paper lining, and for a split second, you feel as if you were transported back centuries into the reminiscent past. Smoothly, you slide the doors open, and step over the little ledge with your sock-clad feet into the abode. The room is slightly smaller than how it looked from the outside, but the accommodation is adorned with various fragments from the ancient era, and you appreciate the privileged glimpse into a world unknown to you, lost in the passing of time.
Curious, you pull aside the folding screen ink-stained with paintings of orchids, only to realize that Ms. Park was sorely mistaken about all the rooms being the same. You hear the doors sliding open again, and in walks Su-Hyeok, balancing a stack of bedding in his arms so high you could barely see his head behind it. He sets everything down near the now-closed again entrance, only to see you standing there in the middle of the room.
Su-Hyeok tilts his head to the side, looking at you. โ€œWhat is it? Is the room not what you expected?โ€
โ€œWell, Iโ€™ve got good news and bad news.โ€
โ€œBad news first, then.โ€
โ€œThereโ€™s actually only one bed in this room, not two.โ€
โ€œโ€ฆAnd the good news is?โ€ Su-Hyeok trails off.
โ€œI looked earlier and it seems large enough. We can share!โ€
Su-Hyeokโ€™s eyes widen almost comically. โ€œNo, absolutely not.โ€
Confused and oblivious, your eyebrows scrunch together. โ€œWhy on earth not? Weโ€™ve had sleepovers so often when we were little, in the same bed every time no less. You didnโ€™t mind then.โ€
Incredulous, Su-Hyeok flushes furiously. โ€œThat was before Iโ€”โ€ he halts mid-sentence.
โ€œBefore you..?โ€ You lean forward, straining your ears, thinking you had missed his last words.
โ€œNever mind. Iโ€™ll make use of the blankets I brought and you can take the bed.โ€
โ€œButโ€”โ€
โ€œNope.โ€
โ€œSu-Hyeok, your back is going to kill you in the morning if you sleep on the floor all night,โ€ you try to convince, feeling guilty heโ€™s offering you the much-more comfortable bed without hesitation.
โ€œIโ€™ll be fine,โ€ he reassures you.ย
โ€œCome on, itโ€™s only weird if you make it weird. This is literally just a room with a bed.โ€
โ€œOne bed,โ€ Su-Hyeok emphasizes. โ€œNot to mention, also just one pillow.โ€ย
โ€œIโ€™ll give you the pillow, then.โ€ย
He looks at you pointedly. โ€œWhat about you?โ€ย
โ€œGive me your arm,โ€ you tease, smiling, trying to hold in your laughter at the scandalized look on his face.ย
โ€œAre you crazy? Youโ€™re not getting anywhere even remotely close to persuading me to share that bed with you,โ€ he splutters.ย
You plop down on the bed and kick your feet back and forth. โ€œThings could be much worse than this situation you know.โ€
โ€œDebatable.โ€ย
You throw the pillow at him and he catches it before it hits his face, looking much too happy when you scoff.ย
โ€œKeep it. You need it more than me.โ€ You fall backwards onto the bed. โ€œRight or left?โ€
โ€œRight or left?โ€
โ€œJust choose one.โ€
Regardless of his confusion, Su-Hyeok ultimately chooses right. โ€œAlright then, Iโ€™ll leave that side open if you change your mind.โ€
โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€
โ€œWhatever you say.โ€ย
โ‹†*๏ฝฅ๏พŸ:โ € *โ‹†.*:๏ฝฅ๏พŸ.: โ‹†*๏ฝฅ๏พŸ
You blindly reach for your phone, unable to sleep. The bright light hits you, causing you to squint at the time. 1:31 am. You roll over and peer down the side of the bed, seeing Su-Hyeok with his eyes closed, wrapped in blankets all the way up to his neck, more likely than not freezing in his thin white t-shirt.ย
โ€œSu-Hyeok,โ€ you whisper, not expecting an answer.ย
โ€œYeah?โ€ He opens one eye to look at you.ย
โ€œI canโ€™t sleep.โ€
โ€œNeither can I. Iโ€™m cold.โ€
โ€œCome up here.โ€ย
โ€œโ€ฆBut not that cold.โ€ย
โ€œYouโ€™ve layered six blankets on top of you and youโ€™re still shivering.โ€
He stares at you for a long moment in the dark until finally, he sighs, giving in. Su-Hyeok pads toward the side of the bed you left empty all night, dragging his multiple blankets and the single pillow with him. If you had to be honest, it was an endearing sight; he looked like a giant baby bundled from head to toe in the thick silks.ย
Before he even gets on the bed, he takes off one and wraps you up in it, the blanket already warm from body heat. The rest he rolls up and aligns vertically, creating a makeshift mini wall between the two of you.ย You snort at the absurdity of it, but decide not to say anything against it, lest Su-Hyeok insists on going back to the ground. He eventually crawls into bed, though his legs are too long, feet ending up hanging off the bottom edge.ย
โ€œIsnโ€™t this better?โ€ You turn to face him, seeing him already looking at you. In the dark, you can barely make out his eyes, but the proximity canโ€™t take away from how your heart feels under his gaze.ย
Su-Hyeok slides a hand under your face and lifts your head slightly to slide the pillow below you. Now both of you were sharing a bed, a blanket, and even a pillow. With your head on half and his on the other, the only way to be comfortable was for the two of you to lay face-to-face, almost touching noses if it werenโ€™t for the centerline of blankets.ย โ€œMuch better.โ€ย
He pushes more of the blanket to your side and when he draws back, your fingers brush accidentally, though he doesnโ€™t move them away, and you donโ€™t have the intention to do so either. โ€œSweet dreams, Y/N,โ€ he says softly, before closing his eyes. Just by those small gestures alone, you were touched more than that acceptable of a friendly nature.ย
โ€œSleep well, Su-Hyeok.โ€ You lay there in the darkness, your eyes lingering on him for a bit longer until you canโ€™t keep them open anymore. This time around, sleep comes easily.ย
โ‹†*๏ฝฅ๏พŸ:โ € *โ‹†.*:๏ฝฅ๏พŸ.: โ‹†*๏ฝฅ๏พŸ
When harsh morning sunlight streams into the room, you wake up to the feeling of warm air fanning across your face. Squinting against the light before being able to open your eyes entirely, you become aware of just how close you were to Su-Hyeokโ€”so close that you could hear his steady heartbeat, loud enough to count. You have no clue as to how you ended up enveloped completely in his arms, your head tucked tightly into the crook of his neck. The pillow wall from last night is now nonexistent, unknown to you how long it actually served a purpose, yet, you canโ€™t find it in you to move away.
But, as your luck would have it, Su-Hyeok's eyes slowly flutter open, and he begins to stir, immediately looking down. Flustered at the current position, the only thing you could think in the moment is to kick him off the bed.The thud as he hits the floor has you scrambling, worriedly peeking your head over the edge to see that thankfully, he wasnโ€™t hurt; annoyed, but otherwise unharmed.
โ€œYah! You were worried about my back last night when I decided to take the floor, but instead kicking me onto it is better?โ€ย
โ€œSorry, sorry! It was on reflex!โ€ You reach down and pull him up back onto the bed, trying not to laugh as he glares at you.
Silence ensues as the two of you are at a loss for words about what happened overnight, avoiding eye contact and leaving space as wide as an ocean in between, the bed growing colder by the minute.
โ€œDid I snore?โ€ Su-Hyeok suddenly asks you.
You shake your head. โ€œDid I say weird things in my sleep?โ€
[ 3:26 am]
โ€œOn-Jo,โ€ you mumble.
โ€œY/N, this is Su-Hyeok,โ€ he tries to reason with your still-sleeping form. โ€œYouโ€™re dreaming, arenโ€™t you?โ€
โ€œNo, weโ€™re having a serious conversation. Of course, youโ€™re On-Jo. I can only tell you important things. Are you even listening to me?โ€
โ€œYes, I am,โ€ Su-Hyeok sniggers as you punch his shoulder in your sleep, feeling apologetic toward On-Jo, who was most likely on the receiving end of lot of them in the course of your friendship over the years. He could relate wholeheartedly.
โ€œThereโ€™s someone I really like and I keep thinking about them but I donโ€™t know if they think about me too.โ€
Su-Hyeok holds his breath so tightly in his chest that it could burst, only releasing the tension in his lungs on an exhale when he finally hears your next words.
โ€œOn-Jo, I like Su-Hyeokโ€ฆa lot. Do you think he feels the same?โ€
โ€œWhy wouldnโ€™t he when itโ€™s you?โ€
โ€œNo, I think you only had sweet dreams like I wished for you to.โ€

On-Jo stands next to Su-Hyeok in the breakfast line when a familiar scent wafts across her nose. She sniffs slightly, trying to decipher what it is when it dawns on her that it was emanating from Su-Hyeok. Her eyes widen at the nuance of it.
โ€œSu-Hyeokโ€ฆdonโ€™t tell meโ€ฆโ€ she places a hand across her mouth in shock. โ€œDid you and Y/N share a bed?!โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ he deadpans, but the blush on his face canโ€™t hide the truth.
โ€œReally, are you sure about that?โ€ On-Jo smirks slightly. โ€œYour shirtโ€ฆit smells like the perfume I gave Y/N as a birthday gift.โ€
โ€œThere canโ€™t be similar fragrances?โ€
โ€œI had it personalized.โ€

Su-Hyeok is the first to wake up, but as he turns to get out of bed discreetly, you grab onto his wrist lightly. โ€œCan you stay with me?โ€ Just the way you said that sleepily to him was enough to convince him not to go.
"You should get some more rest. I won't leave. I promise."
He gets back into bed and you immediately huddle close to him, eyes still closed, the expression on your face much more relaxed than before. Su-Hyeokโ€™s heart flutters in his chest as he pulls you closer, not letting go.
Maybe one day heโ€™ll tell you about what you said in your sleep.
Maybe one day heโ€™ll tell you about the kiss he pressed against your forehead and how you smiled afterwards.
Maybe on the day when he confesses.

The Star Crossed Masterlist
My All Of Us Are Dead Masterlist
My Navigation and Masterlist
Warnings: Normal AOUAD things,

Just before running through the door to escape the inbound zombies, you saw a withered bouquet of flowers leaning against the corner of the wall.
They were your favorites.
Running through the door, you turned around and slammed it shut with the help of Cheong-san. Afterward, the both of you leaned with your backs against the door before sliding down to sit against it, not willing to waste any more energy on getting the attention of the chopper above that obviously was not coming back. You looked over when you heard the boy next to you groan and bumped his shoulder with your own. โ€œYou alright?โ€
He looked over at you and offered a tight smile. โ€œAs good as I can be.โ€
You nodded at him and leaned your head back to rest against the cool metal of the door when a sudden strong force hammered against the door and you quickly jumped up, on edge again after the momentโ€™s rest. Cheong-san jumped up with you and you both stared at the door, preparing for the worst. After a moment of silence, you leaned your ear against the door to hear what might be on the other side and another hit sounded. You flinched back, almost falling onto Cheong-san who steadied you. You all held your breath as one more strike was heard before silence enveloped everything again.
โ€œHeโ€™s gone.โ€
You turned around to look at Nam-ra when she spoke.
โ€œWhoโ€™s gone?โ€ Su-hyeok asked.
โ€œItโ€™s Gwi-nam, right? Heโ€™s gone now,โ€ you spoke with disappointment lacing your tone. You werenโ€™t sure if it was disappointment that he left or disappointment with what heโ€™d become.
Maybe both.
Nam-ra nodded with an empathetic frown in your direction. โ€œIt's his smell. I hear his breathing.โ€
You nodded to the floor, not really in agreement or disagreement with everything but just a nod to get your body to do something other than to fall into a pit of despair. Not looking at anyone, you turned to go walk to a corner of the roof and sat down, leaning against the wall. You lifted your hands to your face and pressed harshly on the sockets of your eyes, seeing little stars and shapes appear until you heard the sound of someone sitting next to you. Lifting your head, it took a while for the ability to see to come back but you then saw Nam-ra sitting next to you with a guilty expression on her face.
โ€œIโ€™m sor-โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t apologize,โ€ you interrupted her softly. โ€œI know what heโ€™s become. I know about how heโ€™s trying to kill Cheong-san for whatever reason and how he bit you while fighting Su-hyeok. I know my brotherโ€™s gone.โ€
She looked at the side profile of your face as you refused to look her in the eyes, instead deciding to stare off into space with no specific object having your full attention. You closed your eyes and let out a sniffle when she wrapped her arms around your shoulder and pulled you down so she was cradling you against her chest. You refused to cry, feeling like you had cried enough already and knowing it was the exact opposite of how your father had raised you. Granted, you never really listened to your father considering how much you hated him for the words he would spit at you for any slight mistake.
You both stayed there for a minute or two until you saw the group gathering materials to make the SOS sign bigger. You slowly got up so as to not bump into her and then held your hand out for her to grab. When she did, you lifted her up and started walking in the direction of the group to help, gathering some materials on the way. You looked over when Hyo-ryung was warning Joon-yeong to be careful as he climbed on top of a platform to look at the sign.
โ€œHow does it look?โ€ Ji-min asked him and he hummed with his hand holding his chin.
โ€œFirstโ€ฆ the โ€˜O,โ€™ it's just too narrow.โ€
โ€œWhy do we need to make the โ€˜Oโ€™ bigger? Itโ€™s a distress signal it doesnโ€™t have to be perfect?โ€ You questioned to Hyo-ryung who stood beside you and she just shrugged her shoulders with a small laugh before going over to help as you did the same.
Working together for a bit, with the assistance from Joon-yeongโ€™s instructions, you all stepped back to take a look at your work and saw the most beautiful and perfect SOS signal you have ever seen before.
โ€œYeah, well, there's no way anyone can miss that,โ€ Joon-yeong spoke proudly.
โ€œRight?โ€ Dae-su agreed and Wu-jin nodded.
โ€œWe did do a good job.โ€
Everyone spread out a little bit, Dae-su and Cheong-san walking over to the copper circle they had placed in the middle of the โ€˜Oโ€™ to center it.
โ€œIt's a little crooked, though,โ€ Hyo-ryung commented and you playfully pulled her to your embrace as you covered her mouth and she laughed beneath your hand.
โ€œNooo. If you say anything weโ€™ll have to do more work!โ€ You joked and she laughed again.
As you let her go with a smile, she turned around and gave you a hug which you didnโ€™t return for a few seconds until it registered in your brain what she was doing. When she pulled back, she looked at you with a sad, guilty smile. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. For all of our preconceptions of you. Youโ€™re nothing like what we expected and I wish we became friends under better circumstances,โ€ she told you. You smiled at her and instead of responding just brought her into another hug which she returned.
โ€œThank you, Hyo-ryung.โ€
โ€œWhat does SOS mean?โ€ Dae-su asked as you all were sitting around, resting. He was messing around and moving the parts of one of the โ€˜Sโ€™s to make it less crooked.
โ€œIt's a distress signal,โ€ On-jo answered.
โ€œI know that. What does it stand for?โ€ He specified.
โ€œIt-โ€
โ€œIt doesn't stand for anything. SOS is just SOS,โ€ On-jo answered, unintentionally interrupting you but you didnโ€™t mind.
โ€œThat makes no sense,โ€ Dae-su looked at her, his eyebrows furrowed.
โ€œThat's just how it is. It doesn't mean anything.โ€
โ€œThen rescue quicklyโ€ฆ speed of saveโ€ฆ save?โ€ Dae-su looked towards you as if he figured it out and you opened your mouth to speak again when On-jo unintentionally interrupted you again.
โ€œWhy'd you ask if you're not gonna believe me?โ€
โ€œI thought you'd know.โ€
โ€œI do know. Look it up. You'll see I'm right.โ€
He rolled his eyes as you saw Choeng-san stand up and start walking towards the three of you. โ€œWhatever. How can I look it up? I don't have a phone.โ€
โ€œActually-โ€ You started only to roll your eyes when Cheong-san interrupted you. You knew they werenโ€™t doing it on purpose but it was annoying nonetheless.
โ€œWhat?โ€
โ€œI asked On-jo what SOS means, and she said it doesn't mean anything,โ€ Dae-su scoffed as he looked at her. โ€œJust say you don't know next time.โ€
โ€œWell, itโ€™s true,โ€ On-jo huffed.
โ€œIt's true,โ€ Cheong-san confirmed and you just shook your head, walking over to where Nam-ra stood and starting up a random conversation with her, unable to stand the love oozing out of Cheong-sanโ€™s pores into the atmosphere, all of it directed towards On-jo.
Minutes later, Dae-su walked up to the both of you. โ€œHey prez, hi (Y/N). What does SOS mean?โ€ He asked and you looked at Nam-ra to see if she would answer but she didnโ€™t, only looking at you for the answer.
โ€œOkayโ€ฆ well. In English, it stands for โ€˜Save Our Soulsโ€™ or โ€˜Save Our Ship.โ€™ When boats would have a problem in the middle of the ocean, they would send that out for help. It usually just means โ€˜Save Our Soulsโ€™ when people use it in everyday circumstances.โ€
โ€œHaha!โ€ He exclaimed and turned back to where Cheong-san and On-jo were. โ€œI knew it stood for something! You were wrong!โ€ He boasted and you just laughed as you watched them start another argument. You looked away for a moment only to look back to see On-jo walking away from Cheong-san kneeling down in pain with his hands holding the back of his knees.
โ€œThe sun's setting. Let's start a fire,โ€ she directed and you nodded with an amused smile that she rolled her eyes at but couldnโ€™t help to return.
As you all gathered around a plank of wood, On-jo started rotating a stick back and forth to start a fire. When she was unsuccessful, she stood up. โ€œI'm done.โ€
โ€œAlready?โ€ Wu-jin asked but Joon-yeong just got in her place.
He started off strong, twisting it back and forth quickly as he tried to start it.
โ€œYou'll get tired. Slow down,โ€ Dae-su warned but Wu-jin smacked him across the arm.
โ€œThe fire won't start if he goes slowly.โ€
Dae-su looked contemplative before turning back to the boy. โ€œDo it faster. Faster. Faster. I said come on, faster! Rub it faster!โ€ He ordered and Joon-yeong let go of the stick in pain, rubbing at his hand. โ€œWhat is it, cramps?โ€
โ€œMy hands. I can't do it,โ€ he explained and Dae-su gently pushed him away as he took his spot.
โ€œI'll do it. Step back.โ€
He grabbed the stick and started rolling it in his hand very slowly which caused some of you to groan, you especially and you crouched down in front of the wooden plank.
โ€œHey, should we kill him?โ€ Wu-jin suggested and you sighed before leaning over and pushing Dae-su back and away.
โ€œOh, move over already,โ€ you demanded before taking up the stick. You started twisting the stick, faster than everyone who was before you and smoke almost immediately started to pile out of the hole.
โ€œSmoke!โ€ Su-hyeok exclaimed and tried to push you away but you stopped him.
โ€œIf I stop now, it wonโ€™t be enough friction,โ€ you told him and he nodded. After another few moments, the fire started on its own and the stick lit up. The group oohed and ahhed and you just laughed as you threw it into the wooden pile you all had created.
โ€œWow! (Y/n), youโ€™re so talented!โ€ Dae-su praised but you just rolled your eyes.
โ€œNam-ra had a lighter this whole time so we couldโ€™ve just used that,โ€ you pointed over at the girl as she held the lighter out, ready to hand it over but you had already succeeded.
โ€œI was going to give it but none of you heard me,โ€ she explained and when everyone remained looking at her with the same shocked look, she continued. โ€œWell, I smoke sometimes.โ€
You laughed.
โ€œSo do I,โ€ you told all of them with a grin as you pulled your own lighter out of your pocket and held it up for everyone to see. Su-hyeok looked at you in astonishment, his mouth opening and closing a few times before you just laughed at his shock. โ€œIโ€™m just kidding. I donโ€™t smoke, I just always carry a knife and lighter on me. I used the knife in the first classroom we were in and the lighterโ€™s been in my pocket since. I havenโ€™t needed to use it until now.โ€
โ€œYou had it this whole time?โ€ Wu-jin asked in exasperation and you just shrugged with a wink sent in his direction as you walked over to the pile, seeing how the fire had died down to only a few sparks.
โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you bring it out earlier?โ€ Joon-yeong asked you in confusion.
โ€œWell, I needed to show off my skills,โ€ you laughed as you lit the stick back up and held onto it as you lit more of the wood on fire.
The sun finally set and you all settled around the fire, pulling out blankets and whatever you could to keep warm. You sat to the left of Nam-ra, sharing a blanket with her and On-jo. There was a comfortable silence that settled over all of you until Su-hyeok turned to Dae-su.
โ€œDae-su.โ€
โ€œYeah?โ€ The boy hummed with his cheek resting against his elbow.
โ€œHow was your audition?โ€
Dae-su scoffed. โ€œThey said I have to lose weight.โ€
โ€œWell theyโ€™re missing out. Youโ€™re a good singer, Dae-su,โ€ you told him and he looked at you with a smile.
โ€œI never knew you'd heard me sing, (Y/n).โ€
โ€œBeing the quiet kid makes it so you see and hear everything. Iโ€™m like a spider. Iโ€™ve got eyes on the back of my head,โ€ you joked and Hyo-ryung shivered.
โ€œOh! I hate spiders!โ€
You laughed at her reaction along with a few others before Su-hyeok spoke to Dae-su again. โ€œSing for us. I wanna hear it.โ€
โ€œJust forget it. I don't want to,โ€ he dismissed with a wave of his hand.
โ€œI actually really like that song,โ€ Joon-yeong told him.
โ€œWhat song?โ€ You asked in confusion, not picking up on any context clues.
He turned to you with a smile. โ€œJust wait, youโ€™ll hear it.โ€
โ€œYou really like it?โ€ Dae-su asked and Joon-yeong nodded.
โ€œIt's really nice.โ€
โ€œYou sing well,โ€ Su-hyeok complimented to sweeten the deal.
โ€œIt'll cheer us up,โ€ Wu-jin added.
Dae-su cleared his throat and sat up straight before starting.
โ™ช Let's go once it's over โ™ช
โ™ช Let's go anywhere โ™ช
โ™ช Once we're done studying hours a day โ™ช
โ™ช Once the annoying sounds are over โ™ช
โ™ช Let's go hand in hand โ™ช
โ™ช Let's not run โ™ช
โ™ช Let's try walking slowly โ™ช
โ™ช Is that drool or sweat pooled on the book? โ™ช
โ™ช No one notices the plop, plop โ™ช
โ™ช The plop, plop โ™ช
โ™ช The falling rain drops โ™ช
โ™ช What is boiling? Simmer, simmer โ™ช
โ™ช It's Mom's doenjang stew โ™ช
โ™ช Mm-hm, a bowl of instant noodles โ™ช
โ™ช In front of the TV which plays nothing but static โ™ช
โ™ช Let's go anywhere together โ™ช
The singing ended in a nice silence, the only sound being the breaths being inhaled and exhaled.
โ€œIt was such a nice song,โ€ Hyo-ryung said softly.
โ€œDidn't you say that it sucked?โ€ Dae-su countered.
โ€œWell, now that I actually listened to it, I think it's kind of nice,โ€ she reassured.
โ€œThat was encouraging, Dae-su,โ€ Wu-jin told him and they exchanged a small laugh.
โ€œHow longโ€ฆ have you been smoking for?โ€ You heard from beside you and looked to see On-jo looking at Nam-ra as she asked.
She looker over at her. โ€œSince eighth grade. I had no friends and a lot of stress back then.โ€
On-jo looked at the fire as she tried to think of what to say in response. โ€œDid you ever need a friend, though?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not sure. I canโ€™t really tell.โ€
โ€œYou always put up a wall. You'd wear your headphones all day, and you never said anything. Wasn't it because you hated us?โ€
โ€œI never hated you guys,โ€ Nam-ra dispelled. โ€œI justโ€ฆ didn't have any friends,โ€ she said. You gave a little sad smile and looked at the ground and as if she could sense your feelings of rejection, she kept going. โ€œUp until (Y/n) came into my life, I was pretty much all alone. She was the first person I was sure I could call my friend.โ€
You smiled and knocked your shoulder into hers which she smiled back at you for.
โ€œWellโ€ฆ I never really liked you,โ€ Hyo-ryung spoke and ruined the moment which you glared at her for until she continued. โ€œI thought you and (Y/n) didn't talk to us because we were beneath you.โ€
โ€œI kind of hated you. There were times that I wished you would just disappear.โ€ Joon-yeong confessed bitterly.
You grabbed Nam-raโ€™s hand underneath the blanket which she squeezed in appreciation. She didnโ€™t let it show on her face but you could tell that it affected her.
โ€œAren't you close? You're the top two students,โ€ Ji-min asked from beside him.
โ€œThat's why I hated her. No matter how hard I worked, I was always second,โ€ he exclaimed frustratedly before he sighed. โ€œBut it's okay now. I think I was able to come in second, because of Nam-ra.โ€
โ€œHey. Second's good too,โ€ Dae-su encouraged. โ€œI can't even be 20th,โ€ he turned to Su-hyeok and Wu-jin. โ€œRight?โ€ Su-hyeokโ€™s hand let go of Wu-jinโ€™s shoulder as he brought it to fist bump against Dae-suโ€™s.
โ€œI always thought you hated us too, (Y/n),โ€ On-jo expressed. โ€œYou always seemed too quiet and were always glaring at people, but now you seem so different. What changed?โ€
You gave her a weak smile. โ€œNothing changed, actually. I only glared at people when they were being dicks. Have any of you ever actually seen me glare at you?โ€ You looked around and everyone seemed puzzled before shaking their heads. โ€œI never talked to anybody because nobody ever talked to me. What was the point in striking up a conversation when it seemed obvious nobody was interested,โ€ you turned your head back to On-jo as you continued. โ€œI donโ€™t know if you remember, On-jo, but I actually talked to you about a week into freshman year. We talked for a little bit at the start of class until you asked me my name,โ€ she looked shocked with realization as she remembered what you were talking about. โ€œI told you it was Yoon (Y/n) and you got so scared you ran away and ended up transferring classes that entire year,โ€ you laughed painfully and turned away from her, looking back at the fire.
โ€œBut you always seemed to act like your brother. You even bullied the bullies!โ€ Ji-min pointed out with a questioning and disbelieving tone as she couldnโ€™t believe what she had believed for the past 3 years was wrong. โ€œLike Na-yeon! She was terrified of you!โ€
โ€œI gave her a few talking toโ€™s when I would catch her being mean so she would stop. Last year she was much worse but I like to think that I helped calm her down, even if just by a bit.โ€
Ji-min looked down at her lap in realization. Sheโ€™d never considered you did all of that just to protect the people she ended up bullying.
After a blanket of silence settled over the group, this one much less comfortable than the last one, Hyo-ryung spoke up as she turned to Dae-su.
โ€œHey,โ€ she started as she hit his arm. โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t compare yourself to Joon-yeong.โ€
โ€œHuh?โ€ Dae-su asked.
โ€œWhen you talked about being in 20th place. Donโ€™t compare yourself,โ€ she stressed and he scoffed.
โ€œI was just saying. Why do you always get on my case whenever I say something?โ€ He looked at her in, what he thought was, realization. โ€œWait a second. Do you like me?โ€
She scoffed and harshly slapped his upper arm which you smiled lightly at as the others laughed lightly.
โ€œShut up, you moron!โ€
โ€œI'm going to put it out there, so you don't get hurt,โ€ he warned. โ€œI like somebody else. So don't like me.โ€
โ€œI don't like you!โ€ She complained and slapped him again as he held him arm. I'm not interested in you at all.โ€
โ€œDae-su. Who do you like, then?โ€ Joon-yeong asked curiously and Dae-su sported a sheepish and shy smile.
Wu-jin groaned. โ€œHe's, he's a total freak.โ€
Su-hyeok pointed at Wu-jinโ€™s head from above. โ€œHis sister.โ€
โ€œHa-ri from Archery?โ€ Ji-min asked incredulously and he nodded. โ€œYou're insane.โ€
โ€œI go crazy when I'm in love,โ€ Dae-su cooed and Nam-ra looked down with a smile as you stared at Dae-su, your own smile gracing your face, but with a sadder, more longing, demeanor. โ€œShe's like my little Cupid.โ€
โ€œStop it,โ€ Wu-jin laughed. โ€œIf we get out of here alive, I'm gonna tell my sister.โ€
Dae-su looked at him in shock at his words, reaching over to rest a hand on Wu-jinโ€™s arm. โ€œWill you really tell her?โ€
โ€œYeah,โ€ Wu-jin confirmed.
โ€œWhat?โ€
โ€œTo shoot and kill you. I said not to like my sister.โ€
โ€œYou can't do that to me, future brother-in-law,โ€ Dae-su complained as he wrestled Wu-jin over Su-hyeokโ€™s lap and tried to pull him into a headlock.
โ€œYouโ€ฆ Hey!โ€
โ€œWill you tell her? Promise?โ€
โ€œYeah. To kill you.โ€
โ€œStop it. Seriously. I love her,โ€ Dae-su told him and Wu-jin groaned.
โ€œWhatever. Somebody else say something so I can forget everything that just happened within the last 2 minutes,โ€ Wu-jin begged and everyone stayed silent and still until Ji-min spoke up.
โ€œMy mom and dad prepped everything for my transfer,โ€ she started with a pensive look. โ€œThey said to just go to Seoul. But I really didn't want to go there. I wouldn't have had any friends, and I was afraid of the Seoul kids. I didn't know what to do,โ€ she sighed. โ€œThen On-jo gave me a great idea. She said I just had to cut school for five days. Then the principal can't write you a recommendation,โ€ On-jo smiled at her words and looked down to her lap. โ€œSo that's what I did. It's all thanks to On-joโ€ฆ that I didn't have to transfer.โ€
On-jo held up her hand in a peace sign and you smiled over at her and her adorableness.
โ€œI should've just gone to Seoul.โ€
Ji-minโ€™s voice brought your eyes over to her and her look displayed one more of bitterness now.
โ€œThen none of this would have happened to me.โ€
On-joโ€™s fingers fell and you gave her a grim smile as she nodded solemnly to Ji-minโ€™s words.
โ€œPeople have always saidโ€ฆโ€ Wu-jin started and the attention went back over to him. โ€œMy sister was an archery prodigy ever since she was little. So our parents only cared about trying to get my sister onto the national team. They've never paid attention to me at all.โ€
โ€œI'll give you all my attention, brother-in-law,โ€ Dae-su told him. โ€œDon't be sad. You have me,โ€ Dae-su groaned as Wu-jin pushed him backward so he was lying on his back. Su-hyeok had moved from sitting in between them during the scuffle they had so he was now sitting beside you. Wu-jin then laughed with a shake of his head.
โ€œThank God that I have Dae-su.โ€
The attention turned to Su-hyeok but he just shook his head to pass. Then the attention moved onto you.
โ€œIโ€™ve always been seen as my older brotherโ€™s little sister. I donโ€™t think that Iโ€™ve ever been known as just (Y/n). If not the little sister of the infamous Yoon Gwi-nam,โ€ you imitated puffing out your muscles to mock your brother in a lighthearted manner but it faltered and you just held your hands in your lap. โ€œThen it was the youngest daughter of the Yoon family. My father, as Iโ€™m sure you all know by his reputation, is not a good man. Not only to everyone he meets but also to his own children. Growing up, Gwi-nam was the only one who would protect me from him. I guess I donโ€™t really need that protection anymore. Iโ€™m sure my fatherโ€™s probably in a safe haven hundreds of miles away from all of this. He always was a fucking coward,โ€ you laughed bitterly and felt a hand grab your own. Looking over, your eyes traveled up from where the hand held your own and found that the hand connected to Su-hyeok. You smiled at him, your mood lifting slightly. You looked back at the fire with a small smile still gracing your face. โ€œIn other, happier, news; as of yesterday, I am officially 17 years old,โ€ your smile dropped as you remembered the situation you were in. โ€œHappy birthday to meโ€ฆโ€
โ€œFuckโ€ฆโ€ You heard Su-hyeok whisper from beside you and you looked over to see him frantically looking around the roof, looking for something but you werenโ€™t sure what.
โ€œWhat? What is it?โ€ You asked him and he shot up off the ground. He jogged over to a section of the roof and you all watched on with curiosity. You stood up when you saw him take a tarp off of something to reveal an opened picnic basket and a cooler that fell on its side, the contents seeming to have been taken. You walked over to him as he looked through the picnic basket with a worried expression before it faded to one of relief when he apparently found what he was looking for. โ€œSu-hyeok,โ€ you asked slowly and quietly as to not scare him. He looked up at you and hid the items in his hands behind his back. โ€œAre you okay?โ€
โ€œIโ€ฆ uhโ€ฆโ€ He looked around sheepishly for an excuse but you just rested a hand on his arm.
โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€
The chatter from behind you had stopped, everyone emotionally investing themselves into the lives of their former outcasted classmate and one of their best friends.
Su-hyeok brought the items out from behind his back to reveal a small black velvet jewelry box and a beautifully drawn card that had the same drawing of the same girl that was on his notebook from yesterday on the cover. He tilted his head and gave you an unsure, quite frankly, adorable, smile. โ€œHappy birthday?โ€ He handed the gifts to your frozen body. You hadnโ€™t been expecting anything like this. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry I forgot. With everything happening I wasnโ€™t able to fulfill the plans I made for yesterday.โ€
โ€œWhat were you going to do?โ€ You asked him breathlessly.
He blushed and scratched the back of his neck, looking towards the ground where he kicked an imaginary rock. โ€œI was planning on taking you up here to have you skip class with me and then after a while, I would confess to you.โ€
โ€œConfess what?โ€ You asked cluelessly and looked back at the group briefly as you heard some of them groan.
Looking back at him, his eyes locked onto yours and he took a step forward. Reaching his hands out, he took the gifts and set them down before grabbing your hands. Staring you deeply in the eyes while you blushed harshly at the way he was acting and how close he was to you. โ€œConfessโ€ฆ that Iโ€™m in love with you, (Y/n),โ€ you gasped but he continued. โ€œI have been in love with you since the day I met you. I donโ€™t expect you to share my feelings, but I would love to take you out on a date one day after all this is over and be able to call you mine.โ€
You stared at him for a moment and just as he sighed in rejection and let go of your hands to back away, you grabbed onto his tie and pulled him down to your level so you could kiss him.
He took a moment to return it, but once he did, he kissed you so softly and with so much more love than you could ever imagine. He pulled your waist into him, forcing you to stand on your tippy toes to reach him, and lifted one hand to brush a strand of hair behind your ear before cupping your cheek gently. When you both pulled away, it was because you couldnโ€™t contain your smile anymore and you hid your blushing face in his neck as you hugged him. He laughed and held you to him, one hand cupping the back of your head and the other wrapping around your waist.
โ€œSo is that a yes? May I call you mine?โ€ He asked against your temple and you leaned back to give him a slight peck against the lips before smiling again.
โ€œYes, Su-hyeok, you may call me yours.โ€
The group behind you erupted into cheers and you flipped them the bird as you leaned down to pick up the gifts he had set down. Deciding to put the card in your pocket, considering it was small enough for it, you went back to sit down, Su-hyeok right on your trail, following after you like a love sick puppy, and returned to your original spots. This time, you were no longer sharing the blanket with Nam-ra and On-jo, but leaning against Su-hyeok as he wrapped an arm around your shoulder. You looked down to open the box and gasped when you saw the beautiful golden necklace inside of it. You opened the locket to find one side filled with small dried flowers and the other side to be empty. You looked up at the boy holding you and he smiled down at you.
โ€œI was hoping we could fill it with a picture of us,โ€ he told you and you melted. Giving the necklace to him, he helped you put it on and you smiled up at him once more before turning back to the group who was looking at you like they were watching a soap opera.
You looked over to On-jo, only to see her smiling at you brightly. There was a tiny hint of disappointment in her gaze but mainly happiness for her two friends.
โ€œAnyways! Onto the next person. What do you say prez? You wanna go next?โ€ You teased Nam-ra lightly as she smiled at you compassionately, happy for your successes.
โ€œI don't really have anything to say. I wouldn't really knowโ€ฆ but I feel like I made friends.โ€
You smiled at her and held a hand out for her to take which she did before turning to look at On-jo who smiled at her reassuringly. The attention shifted over to Cheong-san as he put a stick into the fire before speaking. โ€œMe andโ€ฆ On-joโ€ฆโ€ He paused and sighed. โ€œI just, wellโ€ฆ I just want some water, really.โ€
โ€œNot stuff like that,โ€ Hyo-ryung complained. โ€œBe completely honest.โ€
โ€œBe completely honest,โ€ Dae-su continued. โ€œDo you like someone?โ€
Cheong-san took a moment to think before humming in approval.
โ€œYou do? For real?โ€ On-jo asked and you smiled as you watched Cheong-san try to hide his feelings from the one person who didnโ€™t know about them.
โ€œYeah.โ€
โ€œWhy do you keep on stalling? Do you have a crush?โ€ She interrogated him.
โ€œUh, pretty much.โ€
โ€œPretty much? What does that mean? Who is she?โ€
You looked around to see everyone pretty much having the same expression on their faces. Joon-yeong smirked as he put another stick into the fire.
The two lovebirds stared at each other before Cheong-san looked away and dismissively said, โ€œNo one.โ€
โ€œWho is she?โ€ On-jo begged. โ€œDo I know her?โ€ She looked like she was putting on a teasing face for the group but you could hear the slight hesitation in her voice.
Maybe the love wasnโ€™t as one sided as you thought it was.
โ€œWho is it?โ€
โ€œYouโ€ฆ It's you, On-joโ€ฆ I like you.โ€
On-jo looked stunned by the news and Dae-suโ€™s mouth opened comically at the confession.
โ€œTwo confessions in one night?โ€ He whispered dramatically.
On-jo scoffed at Cheong-san. โ€œHey. Stop that,โ€ she turned back to the group. โ€œHe doesn't mean it. He's just kidding,โ€ she gave a soft chuckle. โ€œI mean, we were friends and neighbors since kindergarten, that's all,โ€ she then turned back to him with a more serious face. What nobody could see except you and maybe Su-hyeok from the excited smile on his face was the dash of hope hidden within her eyes. โ€œStop joking.โ€
โ€œI'm not joking,โ€ he confirmed and she let out a shaky breath. โ€œEver since I was six years old, I've always liked you, On-jo. And I always will.โ€
โ€œAwesome,โ€ Dae-su expressed after a moment before On-jo got up and walked to the corner of the roof.
Cheong-san looked down in sadness and rejection before you lightly kicked his knee from his cross legged position. โ€œCheong-san,โ€ he looked up at you and you pointed at On-jo while Su-hyeok tilted his head in her direction, the both of you encouraging him to go and talk to her.
As he stood up and walked over, Dae-su expressed his surprise into words. โ€œDid you know? I had no idea.โ€
โ€œYou're the only one who didn't know,โ€ Hyo-ryung explained to him.
โ€œEveryone knew?
โ€œYes. I donโ€™t know how you didnโ€™t, you hung out with them everyday and I only saw it from across the classroom but I could still tell,โ€ you told him and he just looked furrowed his eyesbrows.
โ€œWhy didn't I know?โ€
โ€œI didn't, either,โ€ Wu-jin told him to comfort him.
โ€œBecause you're you,โ€ Hyo-ryung told the former boy with an eye roll that you laughed at.
โ€œCheong-san's so cool.โ€
The spoken boy soon walked away from the girl to stand on the other side of the roof, looking away from On-jo as she watched him longingly. You watched between the two of them as you wished they would just be able to accept each otherโ€™s feelings which they so obviously have. Although On-joโ€™s was more subtle and she obviously tried to hide it with her โ€˜feelingsโ€™ for Su-hyeok, you could tell that she had liked him back.
For much longer than just a while, too.
While distracted by your thoughts, they were brought out by Cheong-san screaming On-joโ€™s name. As you looked up, you saw the one and only Gwi-nam running across the rooftop towards Cheong-san who was running towards him too. They slammed into each other and Gwi-nam got the better of the situation by slamming Cheong-san onto the ground on his back.
โ€œCheong-san!โ€
