I need to talk about NATLA Katara because this girl has been on my mind so much recently. In another post regarding Sokka's character arc, I mentioned briefly how the changes to his characterization impact Katara's character in turn. Her adaptation has been one of the most heavily criticized aspects of NATLA; even people who liked the show often bring this up as one of the weakest parts of the series.
I've been sick and rewatching the OG animation and NATLA to see the adaptation choices more clearly (and also think about what s2&3 might look like). I've said previously that changing Sokka's arc meant that Katara's arc had to change, and that wasn't satisfactorily done. Upon rewatch, I have to disagree with my previous statements and the popular opinion about Katara's characterization.
Katara's journey in season 1 is about her growing into her role as a warrior, when she has spent her life being thrust into a passive role -- not able save her mother, having to listen to Sokka (as both her big brother and protector of the village), and not able to fight against the Fire Nation. The first time we see her, she's unable to bend; we see her consistently develop her bending abilities and her strength throughout the season. She confronts her past inability to save her mother. She stands up to Sokka to do what's right. She fights against the Fire Nation and protects the Northern Water Tribe.
Sokka's arc, as I've said previously, is about him struggling with his identity. He was thrust into a leadership and warrior role at a young age, and he's tied up so much of himself into what this means. His arc is about accepting that he doesn't have to be a warrior and doesn't have to be a leader.
It's a yin & yang characterization. Katara's place as a warrior, leader, and protector grows as Sokka's ebbs. Their arcs make the most sense when considered together. They're meant to be in harmony with one another. I see the intention of the storytelling present in their respective characterizations, and how they develop in connection to each other.
Unfortunately, so many people appear to have watched the first episode and either reacted negatively to the changes or stopped watching altogether. I've seen adjectives like "passive" and "bland" thrown around in reference to Katara. And on reflection/rewatch, I think that was the point: to start her off as someone who is afraid & weak in her power, and to grow her over the season into someone who is brave & adept in her bending. By the end of the season, we see a very different Katara from the one in the first episode.
It's alright if these changes didn't resonate with you and you preferred OG Katara's characterization and arc in Book 1 of the animation. They made a choice in the adaptation that was clearly a stumble for the majority of fans. Perhaps, now that they've done the work to get her there in NATLA from a different beginning, her season 2 characterization will more closely match her OG counterpart.

okay, so I did just spend the entire day watching NATLA. I had no choice but to watch this all in one sitting with my friends because I knew that if I attempted to watch it alone, or in increments, I would simply never get past episode 1. and I was right. it, of course, sucked so bad. I intend to write an actual, articulate review of the show as a whole when I have time, but for now, here is a list of the notes I jotted down on my phone (including some quotes from my friends as we watched), cinema sins style (pluses indicate details I actually liked, however minuses are far more frequent; points I considered especially significant are bolded).

Episode 1:
+ Love Aang’s eyebrows, just a very cute kid in general
+ opening fight scene kind of serves
– Sozin does NOT
– This clunky exposition is so strange considering they clearly already assume we are familiar with the entire show
– What’s going on with Kyoshi (ie, where is Roku)
– Where is Katara narrating????
– Hideous fonts
+ AANG SO CUTE <3 (he’s giving Dewey!)
– He can just fucking fly without his glider I guess?
– Airbenders saying wow at airbending (ding!)

– Sky bison…… L (update: I lowkey came around on Appa, but only bc Momo was so fucking busted he looked incredible by contrast)

– Clunky ass exposition “he had to grow up fast” give me a fucking break
– Who the fuck is this white guy
– Katara has no motivations at all?? She’s just chopped liver I guess
– The cadence of every actor is so bad
– They can’t decide whether they want to be the cartoon or their own thing and instead they’re just nothing
Episode 2:
– KANNA JUST GIVES HER THE SCROLL?!?!? KATARA DOESNT GET TO SHOPLIFT. OR DO ANYTHING

Episode 3:
– This one rebel leader guy is giving Katara more than Katara
– Why are the colors so bland
– Sokka being scientifically minded makes no sense bc that trait (which, um, is actually quite crucial to his character) hasn’t actually been established at all up until this point (or retained beyond this one episode)
– This guy is giving jock who happens to be good at engineering, when Sokka should be a NERD who HAPPENS to be good at FIGHTING
– Azula and Mai are NOT GIVING
– Azula should present as sure of herself and incredibly poised. It’s actual crucial to reflecting how she has been shaped by abuse
– And Mai should be razor sharp (both physically and figuratively) and not give a fuck about any of this!!!
+ Katara hitting herself in the face was funny
– Redemption for beautiful Jet (my friend: “I love seeing a beautiful man die”)
– Freedom Fighters are GIVINGGG
– How can Kya “watch the sun rise every day” if they literally live in the South Pole
– They don’t understand Sokka’s daddy issues AT ALL. The simple fact that he’s actually communicating them is egregious
– The first time Katara actually gets angry is for Jet. But not even for the right reasons.
– The first exchange that Katara and Sokka have that makes any sense is in ep THREE (of 8)
– “Sokka was right. You are the bad guy.” WHO WROTE THIS 😭😭
– Jet is only going after the corrupt and collaborators…. So, um… he’s literally right???
+ The fight between Aang and Zuko is actually SO GOOD and understands their dynamic (sidenote: they’re the only kids who are actually giving their original characters at all)
+ Aang reading Zuko’s diary is so fucking funny

Episode 4:
+ I love the interior of Bumi’s palace. Statues of Flopsy
– Omashu is in India now I guess and also everyone in the world lives here
– Bumi’s hat!?!?
+ The nomads sound like Fleet Foxes
– Katara and Sokka are literally switching roles in this tunnel
+ This one Earth Kingdom soldier is really serving.
– The fact that he’s ostensibly framed as in the wrong here though is INSANE
– Zuko is supposed to be ten here 😭 that’s a grown ass man with a BA in Econ
– Sokka’s necklace is plastic
– Katara and Sokka being like “we never used to fight at home” ……. WTF!?!?

– They keep alluding to escapades offscreen without actually depicting any of their grounded bonding moments so we have no reason to care about any of these characters whatsoever or their relationships with one another

– Zuko calling someone an idiot and Sokka never once does . Sounds fake
– Oppressed peoples are just a mouthpiece for oppression instead of real human beings

– So they are sexist but also not. Makes sense
– What the fuck is with this moon backstory shit. Who needed that
– Zhao going to the Fire Temple instead of Wan Shi Tong’s Library for info on the moon completely undermines the point about the role of knowledge in imperialist conquest
– Kuruk looks like a Star Wars force ghost
+ THEY KILLED MOMO (kind of made me laugh a lot, so… points for that I guess)
– But they could only feature him for all of five seconds bc they don’t have the budget to constantly animate his mangy rat ass
– Why is Yue helping MOMO instead of ACTUAL HUMAN BEINGS
– They want me to believe that White Sokka has compassion for that little rat when I simply do not believe that this man cares for anyone or anything or even has a soul.
+ Zuko and Aang’s situationship/chemistry is crazy. They’re both kind of slaying actually
– That said, the kid who plays Aang is not a very good actor, he’s just adorable and has big ears and a Dewey voice. And the kid who plays Zuko has the easiest acting job in the show because Zuko is actually so over the top and dramatic that overacting feels authentic to this one character in particular (and no one else).
– Bending fights look stupid and feel thematically insignificant

– Why do they keep dragging out fast paced scenes to explain everything so that they’re now boring af

+ It’s actually so funny that Ken Leung apparently didn’t even know what he was auditioning for because he was by far the best actor in this show and nearly singlehandedly redeemed it. I love this guy so much.

– TDLR; I hate you capitalism, I hate you Netflix, I hate you White Sokka, I hate you SHEIN Katara, I hate you heterosexual nepobaby Suki, I hate you girlboss Yue, I hate you visibly insecure Azula, I hate you whatever is going on with Mai, I hate you CGI Momo, I hate you wack ass pacing, I hate you clunky, idiotic dialogue, I hate you complete and utter lack of consideration into what made this show great in the first place, I love you Danny Pudi, I love you Ken Leung.
Which, in fairness, is all pretty much exactly what I expected this show would be. But at least actually watching it did indeed verify all my assumptions (although what they did to Katara specifically was even worse than what I had assumed, dear god), so I will be writing up a more in-depth review soon so that I can actually try to unpack why this show is such a dumpster fire, and how that reflects larger trends in media. But for now, all I can say is, I can’t believe I sat through 8 hours of this fucking garbage knowing it would be bad and it was. I’ve been saying this show would suck ass since the second it was announced, and yet it somehow managed to still prove worse than even my incredibly pessimistic expectations. A soulless, shallow, offensive work of profit that cannot even attempt to justify its own existence. I need to kill White Sokka with hammers.

I watched the Netflix adaptation of ATLA today and being a hardcore fan of the OG series who knows every nook and cranny of the ATLA world, here’s my unbiased and truly honest review (It contains both the negatives and positives of the series, so dear reader please enter to read at your own risk).
Firstly, let’s talk about the wonderful additions to the already magical world of ATLA.
1. The depth of the genocide
Well, I always wanted to know how the air nomads were suddenly wiped out and how it would have been for them? Why didn’t they resist? I got my answers in the first episode where we explore how the unhinged power of the comet was “actually” used to create a genocide on a massive level. Before that, I had only heard about it in the OG series. Those few scenes were so powerful that they had left me sobbing uncontrollably and Gyatso’s concern regarding Aang had me bawling.
2. Suki’s Characterization
In the OG series, we do find our Suki the fiercest warrior, but here in the live action, she’s an absolute goddess. She is perfect in every sense. She understands the responsibilities she has being a non-bender and is fearless. Her character is what I believe to be was the strongest one of all.
3. Graphics & Music
We never talk about a film by M.Night (that didn’t happen), but this one is really a visual treat for you can readily set yourself up for some mind-blowing bending scenes, plus the fight scenes are quite impressive. It seems that the VFX team had really done their homework this time. Plus, both Momo and Appa are so freaking cute. I loved the fluffy Appa. Good work over there. The revival of the OG theme is also a highlight plus the sun warriors’ chanting in the end is given a new but intriguing twist. The background music especially in scenes where Aang unravels his Avatar powers is mystical in every aspect.
4. Life in motion
I don’t know about others, but I have always been a sucker for animation as well as live-action where characters are operating even in the direst of the circumstances. Life is there and even after they know what happened a hundred years ago, they are still trying to believe and regain their past confidence. This is beautifully portrayed and I was very much impressed by the way people are continuing their day-to-day activities even in the middle of a crisis.
Overall, the series serves the purpose of an adaptation carrying its unique colors (at least better than the previous live-action disaster that didn’t happen).
Now let’s move to the bad side, and when I say it’s honestly what I felt, you need to take my word on it being a hardcore Atla fan.
1. Weak writing & lots of exposition
ATLA remains at a 9.2 IMDB rating even after years because of its writing, strong plot, and very few plot holes. This time, the writers are the real amateur ones. Despite addicting more to the already flourishing universe of ATLA, sadly, they killed the quest of the viewer to find answers. There is too much exposition. It seems that every character just wants to see the end of the war and keeps on revealing things after things. Plus, some of the OG moments that were the soul of the series are not even included. The way Aang finds Momo and then decides to keep it with him as a last remnant of their bygone air nomad civilization is nowhere to be found. In fact, the replacement of Roku with Kyoshi is the biggest disappointment. I love Kyoshi like no one else but that was unnecessary as per the cycle.
2. Bland acting
Even the worst writing shots can be digested only if the acting appears real good. Sadly, this is another issue that I found with the NETFLIXED version. No doubt the characters must have done a lot of hard work for this, yet, they lack the expressive power. Gordon as Aang is super cute but the goofiness is not even there. Katara seems a nerd who doesn’t like to talk much even when it’s necessary and Sokka’s jokes are forced. Meanwhile, Dallas seems to save the day at one point, but again his over-the-top angry young man attitude ruins it for me. Maybe the actors will learn from the criticism in the upcoming season (if Netflix plans to go with it).
3. Major changes
Yes, it’s okay to change the narrative while you are working on an adaptation, but targeting the loyal viewers who are OG fans of ATLA means that you have to be very careful when you are trying to implement your changes in scenes that are the real soul of the OG. You can’t change the Omashu myth as if it’s nothing when we actually see even the cute animated version of the folklore. You cannot portray Roku more as a perpetrator of the genocide and Bumi as the evil king when in truth he’s the mad king who’s known for his genius ways of teaching. I hated that. Plus, reducing Zhao’s authority and taking Uncle Iroh’s sarcastic attitude is just meh. Mai again doesn’t even seem perfect as a cast. Jet is good as far as the aesthetics are concerned but Jet being in Omashu doesn’t even sit right with me. The amalgamation of multiple storylines creates so much confusion and this persists till the end.
4. Bending at convenience
We all know how Katara’s bending progressed throughout the first season and it’s little effort each day. However, in series, one day she’s unable to bend even a droplet of water and the next day she is capable of producing ice crystals. This was unacceptable for me because I was anticipating her learning strategies. Besides, Aang doesn’t learn much water bending throughout this season and in the end, it’s him being the savior in Avatar state. Thoughtless bending sucks despite the great VFX and that’s one thing at which you can’t convince me otherwise.
5. Forced friendships
We all know how it took some time for Sokka to embrace Aang as a chum. However, here Sokka keeps on calling him “the kid” and remains mostly alienated from Aang. Talking to Katara, then she also seems more interested in helping Avatar fulfill his goal than being with a friend. I hated the scene where Aang comes into the Avatar state and instead of hugging him just like in the OG series, Katara runs along Sokka and keeps on calling his name. How is that going to build any organic friendship? I think the first mistake began right from the very moment when Aang was taken back to Wolf Cove on a boat in his unconscious state. Upon opening his eyes, the first person he finds near him is neither Katara nor Sokka but a tribesman who’s playing guessing games. Writers were really high when they wrote that.
6. Lack of the four nations’ biodiversity
Maybe in live action, it’s difficult to create all the marvels of the four nations when we talk about their natural biodiversity. In the OG series, it is indicated by Aang that even after 112 years, he has still not forgotten the animals that define different regions in the four kingdoms and that’s exactly why he wants to finish those “important tasks” alongside saving the world. His important tasks included keeping a check on the natural biodiversity of the lands and exploring whether the Hundred Years’ War had not damaged the majestic animals. Actually, his first dialogue right after regaining consciousness is to go for an otter penguin’s ride with Katara. When I thought about that I felt that somewhere in Aang’s mind he was always connected to nature and that’s why he wanted to regain that connection by being an avatar. Sadly we never see much of the biodiversity but I hoped that maybe they will.
Also, how come Aang had that silent whistle for one hundred years when in the series he only discovers that accidentally? I missed the OG Yip Yip for our Appa. There are lots and lots of problems with the Netflix version, and no I am not being a nitpicker. I appreciate how the current creators credited the original ones, but now I know why Bryan and Michael bade farewell to this project. On a scale of 10, it’s a 4 for me or 4.5 if I am being too generous.
If I am asked to review the live action in a single line, I would only say this:
“The Netflixed ATLA makes you go back to the OG series and you end up watching the animation to give your mind a much-needed respite from a carefully crafted artistic disaster aimed at the sensationalized generation.”

Overall I give the show a 6.7/10 it felt like an adaptation of a medium-well-written zuko-centric fan fiction that wants zuko/sokka endgame instead of ATLA. Stop the Netflixization of shows!!!!

It seemed like every day of travel got longer. Even now with Katara and Zuko coming to a peaceful resolution to their issues, the tension hadn't broken over the group.
"Once we get to Ember Island, it'll get better," Suki promised them all. "My troop got antsy like this when we were on duty, too. We just need a break, that's all." This was met with grumbles of disbelief, but Aang was grateful that someone other than him was trying to be the voice of optimism. That role usually fell to Katara, but she had been quiet and withdrawn since she and Zuko had come back from finding Yon Rah. Oddly enough, only Zuko seemed to be able to get more than a few words from her at a time. When they stopped for rest, they would often end up slightly away from the group, falling into hushed conversations, broken up by Zuko occasionally running to get her a drink or a snack, or to handle a chore Katara usually did. She assured her friends she was fine, though. Just tired.
That was the over all sentiment of the rest of the group, too. Even Appa was showing signs of strain. Aang scratched his friend's neck with a concerned frown. They would have to rest that night. They'd all been hoping to make it to Ember Island by nightfall, but Aang knew he couldn't keep pushing his flying bison the he had been. He told the rest of his friends and was met with groans and complaints, and then grudging acceptance. Aang steered Appa toward a small island. It was barely big enough for the name, but there were shrubs and a grasses and small trees, hinting at fresh water nearby.
Once everyone had slid down from Appa's saddle, Aang set to making him more comfortable. He loosened the saddle, promising Appa that he would remove it completely once they made it to Ember Island and wouldn't have to leave for a while. Then, while the others set up camp, Aang wandered around with Appa, looking for a good place for him to graze. Appa stopped every so often to munch on some of the grass growing up from the greyish soil, but he didn't seem terribly interested in it. At one point, Appa stopped under a tree. It was a youngish tree, with tender green branches. This Appa eyed hungrily, but Aang gasped and nudged Appa gently.
"No, Appa," he said, pointing at one of the branches his friend had been eyeing. There was a bird's nest with new hatched chicks chirping loudly. The mother bird flew in and stood on the edge of the nest, trilling angrily at Appa. Aang chuckled and nudged Appa again, urging him gently to move on. But Appa didn't move to Aang's surprise. Then to Aang's horror, Appa leaned up, mouth opened wide, and chomped down on the branch, nest, chicks, and bird all. Before Aang could say another word, Appa began chewing, silencing the muffled tweets and chirps. Aang gagged at the sound of crunching, knowing that some of it was bones.
"Appa..." Aang gasped. Appa turned one large brown eye on his boy and kept chewing, thoroughly unbothered. Aang felt a flush creep up his neck and to his cheeks. He grabbed Appa's reins and tugged him back to camp. "That was bad, Appa! I can't believe you did that! Come on, we're going back to camp, and you can eat the grass where I can see you."
Appa groaned in protest, tugging against his reins trying to get back to the tasty tree, but Aang was persistent, and Appa didn't want to hurt him. He allowed the boy to lead him back to camp where there was little to eat except the bland, dry grass. The others looked up in surprise when Aang arrived back, still scolding Appa.
"What happened?" Sokka asked. Aang, still fuming, tied Appa's reins to a boulder.
"He ate a nest of birds!" Aang told his friends, outraged. When they exchanged confused glances, Aang rolled his eyes. Of course, they wouldn't get it. Aang could smell the meat they'd begun roasting for dinner.
"Appa is a vegetarian," Aang said, by way of explanation. More glances went through the group, this time more uncomfortable than confused.
"Well, sure," Katara said hesitantly. "For the most part." Aang turned to her, stunned.
"What do you mean for the most part?" he demanded.
"Well..." Katara shrugged, looking at her friends for help. "Well, it's just that Appa has eaten meat before."
"No he hasn't!" Aang scoffed. "Appa's been a vegetarian for his whole life!"
"I've seen him eat meat before," Katara told Aang gently. "Many times."
"Appa's been sneaking meat and you didn't tell me?" Aang gaped at Katara in horror.
"He hasn't been sneaking it," Katara said. "Last week he ate a rock squirrel. He caught it right where I was setting up my tent."
"I saw him catch and eat a tree hare," Sokka offered helpfully. "He's actually a pretty good hunter for his size."
"He catches a lot of animals just grazing on grass," Toph said with a shrug. "I thought you knew."
"Of course, I didn't know!" Aang shouted. "If I knew, I would have put a stop to it!"
"Aang," Zuko spoke up. "You do know that most animals eat meat, at least occasionally, right? Even the ones that live off of plants eat meat sometimes."
"Not flying bison!" Aang insisted. "Not Appa." He turned to his friend, who was grazing lazily. Appa didn't seem to have a care at all. Not about eating meat, not about how betrayed Aang felt. Aang stood watching him in stunned silence. Then he felt a warm slender arm slip around his shoulders.
"Hey," Katara said gently. "Why don't you come sit and calm down. I made you lentils and wild rock tubers." Aang allowed her to steer him away from Appa. Toph went in behind him and freed Appa from the boulder. He grunted at her gratefully before lumbering over to a small, green bush to graze. Suki and Sokka stood behind Aang, as if to shield him from the sight while Katara and Zuko gave him his dinner and a cup of water.
"You want a blanket?" Katara asked. Aang shook his head, but Katara went over to find one just in case. Zuko patted his back in a way that was intended to be comforting, but just felt stiff and awkward.
"I know how you feel about eating meat," he said. "But you have to understand that you not eating meat is a choice, and animals don't have the ability to make that choice. When they eat, it's based on instinct.
"Appa's not just some animal," Aang held stubbornly.
"I know he's not," Zuko said. "He's your friend, and he's very smart compared to a lot of other animals. But he is still an animal. It's his nature to eat what he needs when he needs it. It doesn't change anything about him."
Aang disagreed, but he knew he'd find no support among his friends. The problem, he convinced himself, was that Appa was now living with meat eaters. Aang could admit to himself that he, too, got curious about meat from time to time. No wonder Appa had, too. All Aang needed to do was keep a closer eye on his friend and keep him from making poor choices. After all, the monks had told him that flying bison, like airbenders, got their abilities from keeping pure. He would keep Appa away from meat for his own good.
Across the clearing, Appa had moved onto a new bush. This one had the most deliciously tart berries. Appa paused midchew and nosed the ground beneath the bush. He could smell a seagrouse nest nearby. Maybe if he was lucky, he'd get another bird before they had to leave the island.

Aang was ecstatic to be reunited with his old childhood best friend. Of course, he was! Bumi was quite literally one of the four things that connected Aang to his previous life before being consumed by an iceberg 112 years ago; Next to Appa, Momo, and his airbending of course. 
Tears collected in both of their eyes as Aang and Bumi wrapped their arms tight around one another - Finally reunited after a century. Bumi knew all those years of chugging down onion-banana juice every morning was a genius idea! 
However, the happy moment was interrupted when an Omashu guard rushed into the throne room. “Your Highness!” 
Bumi and Aang parted from their embrace. “Yes, yes, what is it?” Bumi asked. 
The guard seemed hesitant, “We finally received news on the whereabouts of Princess Serenity.”
“ ‘Princess’?? You had kids??” Aang was both surprised and stunned. Bumim never really seemed like the family man type. Sokka and Katara were surprised that such a crazy man was even able to reproduce! They wondered if his lineage was just as kooky as he was. 
“I did, but Serenity is not my granddaughter by blood. We kind of… adopted each other a while back.” Bumi’s voice grew soft as he spoke of Serenity. His eyes hardened slightly, “Where is she?”
“She’s been captured by a Fire Nation fleet near a mining village by the Mo Ce Sea shoreline.” 
Aang and Katara gasped; Sokka gritted his teeth. 
“How long ago?”
“Just this morning. An Earth Kingdom scout heard some Fire Nation soldiers boasting about ‘hunting the last Lion Turtle’. We believe she’s been transported to the Mo Ce Sea prison rig under the control of Warden Takei.”
Bumi stroked his long white beard in thought. “Hmm. I’ve heard Warden Takei is one of the more ruthless wardens of the lot.”
“What should we do, Your Highness?” The guard asked again.
“We can go and rescue her!” Aang proclaimed. 
Bumi smiled and rested a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “I appreciate your efforts, Aang, but I have faith in my granddaughter.” He began to erupt into laughter, “Besides I feel bad for those Fire Nation weasels! They have to deal with her!” He snorted so hard his nose hurt. 
Aang, Sokka, Katara, and even the guard shared concerned and confused looks. 
“But Your Highness, this is Omahu’s Regent we’re talking about.” The guard tried to explain. Bui cut him off, “And I taught her everything she knows. Of course, I’m worried for her, but she’s a smart girl. She’ll escape from underneath their noses as she did the other seven times.” He shrugged, beaming at Serenity’s impressive track record. 
“ ‘Seven times’?!” The Gaang gasped. 
“Yes, yes, she’s trying to break an old friend’s record of escaping thirteen times! Ambitious my granddaughter is!” Bumi chuckled and snorted again. 
The Gaang and the guard didn’t seem too convinced…
“I can not wait to send the news to Fire Lord Ozai that I have captured the Last Mighty Lion Turtle!” Warden Takei’s grin fell into a snarl, “What a stupid name that is! And to think she’s just a young girl!” The warden cackled, his laughter echoing throughout the prison rig’s metal structure.
Serenity smirked as she stared up at the air duct above her. 
As soon as she was escorted onto the prison rig in the middle of the Mo Ce Sea, she was thrown into solitary confinement deep in the belly of the large metal monstrosity. She was dressed in bland red prison garb instead of her usual bright green and gold wide-sleeved blouses and loose pants and her hair was down, flat, boring without its loops and hair accessories. 
Taunted by the warden and the guards that she had no way to escape, that her days of resisting Fire Nation rule were finished, and that she was to be shipped off to the Fire Lord’s Palace within two days time when the next shipment of supplies came in.  
Serenity stayed quiet through the tauntings. She was used to it and even grew annoyed; She had heard the same spiel from several other wardens, the same taunts and jeers from other guards, and had been promised seven times that she would be meeting Fire Lord Ozai. 
Serenity snickered as she plopped down on the cold prison floor and stretched her legs. “After seven times, you think they’d learn that they can’t contain me~” She chuckled, and a small snort came from her crinkled nose. “And eight is my lucky number!”
At least the Fire Nation was kind enough to leave her necklace and bracelets alone...

Taken - Zutara - Part 6

Katara stands out on the ice, staring out after the dissipating trail of smoke. It was her father, about to leave to go hunting with a few men, who finds her.
"The ship is gone," she said when he approached, unsure of what else to say.
He looks at her, confusion written across his face. "Prince Zuko assured me that they would be gone by morning. Are you worried they'll come back?"
No, she wanted to say. She was worried they wouldn't come back. But she couldn't tell her father that. So she shook her head and numbly went back inside the village walls.
The rest of the day was a haze. She numbly went about braiding cords under her mothers watchful eye, messing up more than she succeeded. Sokka hovered, always nearby, even as he worked with some of the other boys to pack snow into a few holes in the village wall. Katara looked down at the cords in her hand, finding the misshaped braid offensive. Had she always been so clumsy with this?
That night, after another bland dinner, Katara crawled into bed, quickly surrounded by the warmth of her family. But it was heavy, stifling. She did her best not to squirm, even as Sokka snored nearby.
She barely slept, only to wake at dawn once again.
Standing once more at the section of ice where Zuko's ship had docked, Katara did the only thing she knew she could do. She set about her bending forms. As she pulled water from the sea and threw spears of ice with increasing at the icebergs off shore, Katara wondered if Zuko would ever return. Now that he had fulfilled his promise and returned her to the water tribe, she wondered if he would return home and never think of her again. Had that all she had been to the Fire Prince? A promise to be fulfilled.
"Katara," her mother called. "What are you doing out here?"
She looked back at her mother, her hair blown into her face. She could feel the top knot bun beginning to fall. She was a mess, angry and furious.
"Bending," Katara managed to say, though she could barely hear herself speak.
Her mother studied her for a moment. "Come inside. Let me fix your hair."
Without knowing what else to do, Katara followed her mother inside. She sat, as still as she could manage. Her mother spoke softly, telling Katara about some of the things she'd missed. Sokka had started training to be a hunter. Gran Gran was one of the head elders. Katara wasn't really listening, instead frowning as her hair was combed and pulled.
"Done," her mother said, clearly happy. "Better?"
Reaching back, Katara felt the long braid in her hands. It felt... odd. She'd worn her hair down as long as she could remember, save for the top knot. She could feel a slight breeze against the back of her neck.
"Yes," she lied. "Thank you."
Her mother smiled, more at ease than ones Katara had seen yesterday.
By noon, Katara had tugged the braid out and put it up in the traditional Fire Nation style.
As days passed, Katara continued to leave the village and train. Her mother would eventually bring her back, but it was in vain. Katara started to notice the looks the other villagers gave her. The way they whispered and pointed. The younger children began to avoid her, their parents giving warnings. She was so very red, so Fire Nation. See how she moves? See how she wears her hair? They have made her one of them.
Each morning, Katara takes a deep breath, and holds herself with pride. She had survived years in the Fire Nation, proving her worth as a healer. Now, she will survive in the Southern Water Tribe, proving her strength. She claimed an empty section of the village as her own, a mat laid out for her there, as she spent afternoons meditating.
A month into her return, she gained an opportunity. A warrior returned from a hunt with a gouge in his leg from the claws of a polar leopard. As her father discussed with the family what could be done, Katara approached the warrior. He stared up at her with fear in his eyes and his jaw set. All men were the same when they were wounded.
By the time her father had returned, Katara had moved back to her little spot. She watched, sitting straight and prim, as her father and the warriors family cried out in shock at seeing the severe wound as nothing more than faded scars. When her father looked towards her, she simply bowed her head. Healing was her job, and she was very good at her job.
A few days later, she finds her little spot turned into a proper hut, snow packed into walls, with enough space for her and another, the door wide. Slowly, people pop in, asking for help with all sorts of wounds. The tribe is always stiff, overly polite and anxious, each time they come to her. Katara doesn't care, simply doing her job and giving a polite bow when her patient leaves.
That night, when the air of her families hut seems to weigh her down, she gathers her things and moves into the healing hut. Her family is upset in the morning, but she can't bring herself to care. She feels like she can finally breath at night.

Can We Talk About Katara And Sokka For A Sec?
This is more Avatar stuff since I'm still watching the show. (I haven't watched anime in like a week and I'm kinda going insane, but it's whatever.)
(edit from later because I should have added this: I'm talking about the Netflix version in this post.)
So.... Sokka and Katara are.... ok.... I guess....
Katara's kinda bland and Sokka's just not.... funny.
Also, they're just gonna leave out Katara showing up the Northern waterbenders?! How's she supposed to prove that she's one of the best waterbenders if not by showing up a "only guys can do battle waterbending" old fart?! (haha nevermind, the rumor was wrong. I finally finished the show. She shows them up. But she's very.... unemotional about all of it. But the fight scene against the master is epic)
And for Sokka, yeah, he got his ass handed to him, but what about dressing him up? (Yes, that's my issue for it. I wanted to see him in a warrior outfit.)
Some of this stuff was just really fun to watch character growth moments.
I miss it.
(Edit from later: The new Zuko character development moments are fucking awesome though.)

with all of the criticism NATLA is receiving, i'd like to bring up another point that i feel like i haven't seen many people talking about, and i think this really contributes to the lack of overarching atmosphere NATLA has.
music.
i think a lot of people have already expressed the sentiment that this live-action adaptation really misses on a lot of characterization. katara seems bland and one-dimensional, aang is constantly stressed and anxious about the future every time he's on screen, sokka just doesn't quite have that quintessential sokka-ness we as a fandom know and love.
i'd argue that part of the reason that the show is lacking that characterization is first because of screentime. as a show with ~20 episode seasons, the original atla has TONS of filler episodes, but these filler episodes let us see different facets of the characters and ulitmately aid in seeing how characters behave when the overarching plot is not driving them at that very moment.
however, i believe that even with a shorter season that can't fit any filler, you can still capture those kinds of moments. instead, what i'd argue worsened this lack of characterization is a lack of those silly, twangy themes we all know and love from the original.
you know what i'm talking about? aang would make a joke and we'd have goofy melodic lines playing, or momo would appear and we'd hear this:

the original ATLA was so creative in using music to paint a picture- in serious moments, it matched the mood entirely, in quiet, peaceful ones it made you feel like you were right there, on appa's back with the rest of the gaang, and in silly ones, it gave a sense of heart and lightness to the show.
watching the live action, we just didn't get that same range of emotion, and i do believe this is in part because the music just missed so much.
despite my criticism above, i'm excited to see the show renewed. i truly hope that the writers take the critiques they've seen from the fan's responses and use those to write the show better. the actors really are being limited by the directing & writing, and once that limiting factor is resolved, i really hope to see the show recapture that heart and soul that is so present in the original:)<3

the whiplash you get when agreeing with a TikTok about how media literacy is dipping so hard recently and how they can't get any lessons not designed for a 4 year old and how some ppl are changing the way they write to accommodate that and people STILL take the wrong lesson/don't understand what's being said unless it's spelled out so clearly for them and the fear creators have now-a-days when they put something out into the world because they're afraid ppl won't actually read the nuance, they'll just look for the surface-level shit and everything is all good and you're agreeing, then they hit you with the 'and that's why the live action ATLA was so bad - they took out Sokka's sexism and made Katara bland!' and you just sit there, brain shorting out because how do they not see that they...they're the ones now not being able to read any deeper than a 4 year old's understanding of lessons and themes.....
The writers took the two most shallow, basic character traits designed for children to understand and gave them actual depth and nuance and.....you missed it because it wasn't spelled out for you. Maybe find a mirror and...look into it?

How do you explain the fact that frankly stupid and deceitful takes are very popular in the fandom? I mean, I understand why some ship, canonical or not, may be more popular, but I'm talking specifically about VERY strange takes that do not have canonical confirmation, takes which anyone who has watched the show can easily refute? ("Katara has never loved Aang", "Aang demonstrates toxic masculinity", "Zuko is a little duck without anger and toxicity problems", "Sokka is a fool", "Katara is gaang's mom", "No one has ever understood and supported Katara").
I mean... There are always people who believe in reptilians or a flat earth, but such people are NOT the MAJORITY. but these takes have hundreds and thousands likes and they are more popular than interesting and in-depth analyses of the show.
How do you explain this?
You want the regular version or the arrogant version of my answer?
The regular one is: the more "bland" and empty a fanon thing is, the least likely it is to offend people since there's nothing actually there for them to be offended by, and the easier it is for people to project whatever crazy bullshit they want to see (see all the pro-Zutara/anti-kataang & maiko metas that seem based on a completely different story, and that often contradict each other). The people who latch onto these kind of "empty" stuff also very much do no like it when others point out they are, in fact, empty, and so they double-down and try to bully others into accepting it as fact, and deliberately misrepresent what happens in a story to potential new viewers so they'll be more likely to create their own "proof" in their head as well due to confirmation bias.
The arrogant answer: Not everyone was blessed/cursed with good taste like I was, so they latch onto the boring shit instead of the good stuff.

What would you change about Legend of Korra, to make it a better story?… Personally, I would NOT make bloodbending more overpowered then it already is (doing it without a full moon + taking away bending + doing bending without hands?!?)… I would also get rid of the ‘Dark Avatar’… I would also make all the Main Characters still alive (except Aang, of course) and they all helped train Korra … And Korra would never cheat on anybody! 🌊
The plot would still involve a dark avatar but it's very clear to be an impostor and fails in every single way. Each side (Red Lotus, Kuvira) tries to create their own avatar or give themselves extra power but it fails spectacularly
Actually, give the villains more personality i feel lik they were bland
Katara gets her own statue and play a bigger role by actively training Korra; she also has a mobile healing operation
Bumi II doesn't get airbender powers
Lin isn't demonized for being upset at Suyin. Instead have it where Suyin accidentally scars Lin's face and feels genuinely apologetic for it. Toph defends Lin and exiles Suyin so she can learn to control her temper. From there Lin learns to see hee sister has changed for the better, and Suyin learns to face her fear.
Mako gets more character development. I don't know how he just does
Bolin gets to stand up to Eska
Asami has more in the story
Iroh II is a main character, his arc is learning that needs to participate more and not let his nation's history hold him back he also meets great aunt Azula
Korra gets called out a lot more for her actions and learn from them, there's an arc where she learns bloodbending but in a twist she learns to use it for healing (say Asami gets badly injured and Korra heals her)
The romance is bare minimum. No love triangles.
We meet the other characters too like Sokka and Suki and their brood, with all of their kids being waterbenders. Mai is confirmed to be Izumi's mother, and Kiyi was confirmed to be officially adopted into the royal family, which brings us more relatives.
Tone down the violence some of it was not needed im sorry eek
Give Korra brown eyes purely out of spite
There is no romantic resolution Korra learns to love herself and others; she does crush on Asami and its left more open ended.
No convergence, instead it's more like "cracks"; random people start getting airbending powers albeit slow, due to the world naturally bringing it back it's still very minimal
AANG AND TOPH ARE NOT BAD PARENTS in fact Toph isn't even a cop but a probending coach.
Aang and Sokka also retain their features instead of being whitewashed.

Here’s my semi-brief thoughts on the new Avatar show. Spoilers below:
My biggest gripe with the new show is that it’s a prime example of the death of media literacy. SO much of the story has been dedicated to just…info-dumping lore and basically having to say out loud who’s good and who’s bad and how you should feel about each character. It was cool to hear Gran-Gran say the intro of the OG show but she did it as a major exposition bomb. One of MANY especially in the first few episodes. ATLA’s heart is it’s world-building and the relationships between it’s characters, and those things went hand in hand as the OG show progressed. The characters learned from each other and grew as people, and the new show just feels deeply bland and shallow. The characters have been stripped of so many of their most human traits because it makes them seem like bad people, and it needs to be shoved in your face that they’re the good guys, so they can’t possibly have flaws. Sokka can’t be a huge misogynist, Katara can’t be angry and impulsive, Aang can’t be childish, etc. Hell, even Zuko seems to have been dumbed down at the cost of making Iroh seem like the better character, and don’t even get me started on what they’ve done to him. In season one we’re supposed to hate Zuko, so that his redemption arc is all the more compelling. Taking time this early to force out that “he’s a good guy don’t worry!” speaks very poorly to the writing, among other things. Overall it just feels very weak, and like the writers felt the need to spell everything out for audiences. The show starting in the past, while interesting to see and setting the mood quick, it was thematically so absurd and set me up to be disappointed. Aang should never have known about the war and the Fire Nation invasion before he went in the ice, it’s part of what bonds him to Katara in the first place! She teaches him what happened and tries to help him through the emotions of that realization. He comes to terms on his own that he’s the last of his people, he doesn’t have some old lady throw it in his face in a crowd. Listen, there’s some things about this show I actually enjoyed, and it certainly could’ve been worse. But God, I’m not a fan. I hate to say it, but I’m hoping Netflix stays true to themselves and cancels it after this season.
