Good morning, everyone! 🌞
I'm feeling really excited about the theme this month on my website: KATE BERLANT! 💗
Tumblr media
I met Kate in person in February after writing about her last year, and she is SO kind and friendly. Just a complete gem!
But not enough people know about her comedic genius!
Maybe you've seen her before but not known her name? She is the Garfield lady in I Think You Should Leave AND the kooky talent agent in The Other Two for starters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, she doesn't receive the same accolades as her peers like her frequent collaborator Bo Burnham and Jerrod Carmichael (who were both EPs on her comedy special along with The Bear's Chris Storer).
Seriously, how was Cinnamon in the Wind not nominated for an Emmy?! Complete nonsense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This month, she is performing her PHENOMENAL one-woman play Kate in London. For any British readers, I urge you to get tickets if you can—it's an incredible immersive experience!
Tumblr media
Anyway, here are the upcoming articles on my site about Kate for the month of September:
10 fun facts about Kate Berlant
A Kate Berlant primer (you might think you don't know her, but if you like comedies, TRUST ME...you've seen Kate haha)
Audience interviews for her NYC shows (similar to what I did for Rothaniel)
A Kate Berlant article a day
And just for fun—every Kate sticker or image I had noticed in my 3 times attending the show
I hope you enjoy this month's content (Kate certainly deserves all the praise and recognition), and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Hi, everyone!
Jerrod Carmichael was on Fallon yesterday to promote hosting the Golden Globes on Tuesday night (so excited for him!).
Here's the video 👀
youtube
Speaking of Jerrod, I was FLOORED by the fact that Rothaniel was the highest rated comedy special on Letterboxd's yearly roundup!
Tumblr media
Looking at that list, Bo directed the top three specials of 2022.
Damn, that's impressive!
Tumblr media
1. Rothaniel
2. The Inside Outtakes (obviously lol) &
Tumblr media
3. Cinnamon in the Wind—He's a triple threat✌🏼

You can find out about her acting career, her amazingly creative family (hint: they have a connection to the king of mockumentaries haha), and her relationships with other famous comedians, including Bo Burnham (she says he runs comedy right now lol), Reggie Watts, Rory Scovel, Sarah Silverman, and site-favorite Maria Bamford.

Enjoy, and keep it here for more Kate Berlant and comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Hi, everyone! There are two newish articles that feature Bo and his works this week:
The Best of 2022 lists are starting to pour in and—to the surprise of no one—Jerrod Carmichael's Rothaniel has been chosen the Best Special of the year by the New York Times! 🙌🏼
Here's what Jason Zinoman said about the special directed AND edited by Bo:
It’s not often that “beautiful” is the first word that comes to mind about a stand-up special. For some, that might even sound like a backhanded compliment. When did beauty ever make you laugh? But Jerrod Carmichael’s “Rothaniel,” a radically intimate, cinematically shot production, is a departure for him and stand-up more broadly. Its melancholy tone and patient pace set up new kinds of clever jokes. And its exquisite aesthetic features stunning and unexpected shots staged by the director, Bo Burnham, that emphasize the theme of mystery and secrets. Carmichael’s language manages to be unorthodox and elegant, and the way he interacts with the audience displays a vulnerability that is as moving as it is funny. (Streaming on HBO Max.)
If you'd like to learn more about Jerrod's special, I highly recommend my series of interviews with audience members who attended one of the four tapings.
Tumblr media
The article similarly mentions the recipient of Best Nonsense is Kate Berlant's Cinnamon in the Wind, which was another comedy special directed by Bo (albeit in 2019!):
Kate Berlant had a breakthrough year primarily because of her hit live show, but she also released a sketch-driven special (with John Early) and a black-and-white stand-up hour on FX on Hulu, “Cinnamon in the Wind,” which captured her riveting comedy of the past decade. It comes off as entirely improvised (“I don’t want to belittle what we have,” she tells to the audience, “with material.”). Fans will recognize how she takes a cliché, twists it just enough to seem off — but not so much as to be a straight spoof. “I don’t know if anything has ever happened to anyone here,” she says and then stops. “I don’t want to assume.” (Streaming on Hulu.)
Tumblr media
The other item is a recent Cracked article about the prescient nature of Zach Stone, featuring quotes from one of the show's writers (obviously NOT Bo). You can check it out here!
