Dark Fantasy Yuri Manga 'ROLL OVER AND DIE' Volume 4 Release in English

On Tuesday, Seven Seas Entertainment released the fourth volume of Sunao Minakata's manga adaptation of Kiki's dark fantasy Yuri series ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omou na" to Gachizei ni Yuusha Party wo Tsuihou Sareta node, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai) The manga is available in English digitally and in paperback.

Based on the light novel of the same name, Roll Over and Die follows Flum Apricot, a hero born with the unique affinity "Reversal" that leaves her with zero stats across the board. When she is prophesized to join the hero's party and defeat the Demon Lord, Flum thinks she will only be a burden, and, unfortunately, some members of the party agree, leaving her betrayed and sold into slavery. However, in her darkest moment, Flum meets the timid Milkit, and, desperate to protect her and save her own life, she discovers the true nature of her power.

The publisher describes the fourth manga volume:

Flum has triumphed over Dein and thwarted his hostile takeover. With Milkit safe once again and her scars healed, Flum can finally remove Milkit's bandages and reveal the face of her beloved partner. Things take an abrupt turn, however, when a child without a face of their own arrives on Flum's doorstep, and the ghost of a defeated foe is revived by the Church of Origin. Just what sinister schemes are lurking behind their pious facade?

Author Kiki began posting Roll Over and Die as a webnovel on Shousetuska ni Narou in 2018. Micro Magazine acquired the series and began releasing it as light novels under the GC Novels imprint in July 2018. The light novels include illustrations by Kinta. The fourth and most recent volume was published in Japanese in 2020 and English in 2021. While Kiki said in 2021 that a fifth volume is coming, it was never released, and the series is considered stalled.

In December 2018, Micro Magazine began serializing a manga adaptation of the series on Comic Ride. The manga is illustrated by Sunao Minakata, best known as the artist for Akuma no Riddle: Riddle Story of Devil. The fifth collected volume was released in Japan in August. Seven Seas will release it in English on April 30, 2024.

Roll Over and Die is notable for its mix of Yuri and fantasy elements. It is one of several fantasy Yuri works, including I'm in Love with the Villainess and Sexiled, that began as a web novel in the late 2010s before being acquired as a light novel and later adapted into a manga. It has received praise for its storytelling and prose but garnered some criticism for its use of the video game stats trope, violence, and gore.

Christine Dashiell translates the manga into English, with lettering by Bambi Eloriaga-Amago & Roland Amago.

Fantasy Yuri Manga 'ROLL OVER AND DIE' Third Manga Volume Out in English

On February 28, Seven Seas Entertainment released the third volume in Kiki and Sunao Minakata's dark fantasy Yuri manga ROLL OVER AND DIE ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omouna" to Yuusha Party wo Tsuihou sareta node, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai). The manga is based on the light novel series of the same name by Kiki.

ROLL OVER AND DIE follows Flum Apricot, a useless girl with zero stats across the board who somehow finds herself chosen to join a legendary party of adventurers to defeat the demon king. One of her companions, believing her dead weight, betrays Flum and sells her into slavery. But, just after being tossed to monsters and left for dead, Flum discovers a cursed weapon and an extraordinary power that gives her a second chance and allows to protect her new companion, Milkit.

The publisher describes the third volume:

After risking her life to obtain a healing herb for a merchant, Flum Apricot is gifted with a house to use as a home base for her and Milkit. Not long after they settle in, Flum is reunited with her former comrade from the Hero’s Party, Eterna, who claims to know the remedy for Milkit’s disfigured face. Flum doesn’t have much time to enjoy this happy turn of events though. The villainous Dein who rules the West District has decided to make his move. The ROLL OVER AND DIE manga is based on the webnovel turned light novel of the same name by Kiki. The light novel features illustrations by Kinta. Notably, it includes dark fantasy elements and gore in a Yuri story. Micro Magazine publishes four volumes of the light novel in Japanese. Seven Seas publishes the novels in English.

Sunao Minakata is a Yuri artist known for illustrating Yun Kouga's Akuma no Riddle (Riddle Story of Devil).

En cualquiera de los dos casos, alguien normalmente se molestaría: es una falta de respeto negarte a salir a comer cuando te invita tu senpai (Satomi es mayor que Colon por 3 años y 3 meses, y varias veces he escuchado que los miembros lo llaman senpai), así que negarte tres veces sería casi como decirle que no te agrada o algo, mientras que aceptar la invitación salir a comer tres días seguidos... Satomi gastaría en la comida de Colon, aparte de la suya, tres días seguidos (¿o quizá la gente con dinero no se molestaría por ello y yo sólo tengo mentalidad de pobre?).

ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword!, Vol. 3

If anyone had “zombie apocalypse” on your Roll Over and Die bingo card, well, congratulations. I can’t really be surprised, as not only is this series far more comfortable with being a horror book than a yuri book, but it’s several different types of horror book as well. That said, the undercurrent of the entire series is “we need to fix all this so we can live a peaceful happy life”, and, especially here, we are told that getting a peaceful and happy life does not mean sticking your head in the sand. Milkit has a quote that sums it up: “This world has no shortage of people willing to drag others down to make themselves feel superior and in control,” said Milkit. “The moment you accept that you can’t get away, you let them win.” This book is about not letting them win. Not that it’s a total victory, though…

Pictured on the cover are Gadhio, formerly of the Hero’s party, and his wife Tia. If he seems a bit less than happy, it’s because Tia’s been dead for the last six years. After Milkit gets kidnapped AGAIN, Flum discovers that the culprit is Milkit’s old master, the one who damaged her face and is in general one of the worst people in this book (and that’s saying something). Unfortunately, after Flum gets her brutal revenge and takes Milkit back, they discover that the dead are returning to life. Not just Milkit’s old master, either, but Gadhio’s wife and even Eterna’s adopted family have returned from the dead. They seem real… mostly? They’re being very friendly? But how much can this be trusted, especially since it seems to be part of a plot by the Church?

As with previous books in the series, this volume features a lot of body horror, brutal killings, and bad things happening to both good and bad people. There’s graphic descriptions of torture, and while there are fewer main characters dead than I had expected when I started, in the end surviving is about all our heroes really achieved. At the same time, of course, there are a few really sugary sweet yuri scenes sprinkled throughout (primarily Flum and Milkit, though there’s also some suggestive stuff between Ink and Eterna which I am far less comfortable with.) Milkit here decides that what she’s feeling for Flum is definitely love. Flum likely feels the same, but both of them are too shy, and possibly a bit too broken, to have it be much more than “we just want to be at each other’s side”. That said, I am appreciative of these scenes, as without them this book would be too dark to even read at all.

The Hero’s Party was also in this book, and things appear to be going very badly for them, as two are evil and two are likely going to be forced into evil. The next book in the series has Cyril on the cover, so I suspect we may see even more of them next time. Till then, this is still well-written and compelling, but save it for when you have a strong stomach.
