 So I noticed a few people have been following me bc a couple artist friends of mine have been drawing my Swap Pap, Gale (love you @flamingbiscuit​ @a-snowpoff​ and @mmhinman​ [who drew the ref below]) so I’ll post some information about my boy here, for those of you wishing to know more about him.

I’ll be including some general HCs about him, as well as his backstory below the cut (though it’s currently very much a work in progress). I hope you enjoy ^^

TW for Gale’s backstory include no-mercy run mentions, death, and mourning/grief.

HCs

He has a humming stim. He constantly listening to many different songs from different genres, and while there’s no real consistency between them, one thing they’ll have in common is that they’ll stick in his head for hours. As a result, his Undyne started to refer to him as a Nightingale. Gale for short, hence his nickname.

He works as a software programmer full-time, so he has some cash to burn. He also runs a side YouTube channel where he teaches kids how to code. He enjoys being entertaining to kids, and while he likes them just fine, he’s probably in need of a babysitting lesson or two.

He has a number of stims outside of humming. He has chew necklaces for his chewing stim and it a notorious pen clicker. Also leg bouncing. Lots of leg bouncing.

He's not normally very athletic and is even a bit too indoorsy, but he really enjoys swimming. Something about just letting himself drift in nice, cool water he finds soothing. If he lived by a large body of water he would also enjoy paddle boarding and kayaking.

He owns a bearded dragon named Mush (also called “Mushy” or in some cases “Mushymushymushy”). Gale bought a nice large terrarium full of all the needs for his little friend and keeps them plenty happy. Mush will often rest on Gale’s shoulder while he works.

His love language is physical affection. He'll stop if you want, but if you let him, he's going to reach out at every opportunity. Rub your hand while you hold his, snuggle up on the couch (platonic or romantic, he’s down wither way), lazily fiddle with your hair, etc.. He also tends to lean into the people he likes when he laughs.

He does origami as a hobby. Paper folding was also a stim for him and he decided "heck, I'll do something artistic as shit with this" and he took it up pretty easily.

His absolute favorite food is gnocchi. It's pasta in a cute little bug-shaped package and they're fun to chew.

He does little Mandela designs in his notebook just as doodles, not really seriously. 

He enjoys comically bad movies as well as romcoms. He also prefers movies that are more focused on the characters than the plot, though will make an exception if the comedy is especially well done.

He's a bit of a gamer, but only really enjoys single player games. He specifically prefers smaller indie platformers like hollow knight, shovel knight, etc..

He’s got a very relaxed attitude, which he often expresses through mischief and playing ignorant. He is very off-the-cuff when it comes to how he interacts with people, and will often say whatever first pops into his head, for better or worse.

He wears his emotions on his sleeve, and if he’s upset about something chances are you’ll know right away. He’s usually a pretty happy guy, but when the mood shifts, it’s almost a complete 180.

He highly values honesty, and would rather someone be blunt with him than try to spare his feelings. He’s not a fan of being given flowery words or people dancing around an issue for his sake.

That said, he does still try to emotionally connect with people who are having a rough time, and will often adapt to the people around him. Need cheering up? He’s a great distraction. Need a shoulder to cry on? He’ll comfort you all night. He’s not the best with words, but he’ll do what he can to put smiles on his friend’s faces.

Backstory

Gale’s Underswap is much like any normal Underswap in the begginning. He was raised by his older brother (his swap sans), who is training to be a royal guard and to be the hero his little brother always thought of him as. The two grew up in Snowdin, though Gale would often leave town to explore the dump and find new tech to tinker with. That’s where he met his Undyne, and the two would often talk about their experiments over Undernet. Gale is very close with Undyne, and considers her his best friend.

This peaceful, happy life is interrupted with the arrival of Chara. In this particular Swap AU, Chara begins to a no mercy run, makes it through Snowdin and finally reaches the border to Waterfall. Gale has decided to step in after seeing the disaster the human had caused, and he rushes in recklessly, hoping to stop them before they can reach Undyne and the other Waterfall monsters. Gale has decent HP and attack, and he figures that if Chara took a swing at him, he could tank it and knock them down in one blow. 

He doesn’t know just how futile that would be.

The fight commences, both dodging each other’s attacks. Chara seems to predict Gale’s attacks, and dodges them easily. They wear Gale down, until he’s out of breath, and at their mercy. Chara swings their weapon one last time, but before they can hit Gale

Sans throws himself between them, reducing his HP to zero. 

Gale watched Sans die in front of him, and being frozen, he just. Sits there. Shaking. Unable to move. It’s then that Chara snaps out of their trance. They realize what they’ve been doing. What hurt they’ve been causing. They try to reach out to Gale, but before they can touch him, he teleports away in panic. After this, Chara starts sparing monsters, effectively being a pacifist from this point. Eventually, Chara defeats Toriel, and they leave the Underground, seemingly to never be heard from again. 

Gale, grief-stricken, moves in with Undyne. He helps Undyne with her experiments, and learns to code in order to earn his keep. He starts seeing a therapist through Undyne's encouragement, which helps a bit, but he never quite goes back to normal. He does eventually get used to masking his sadness, using his humor to get genuine laughs from his jokes and divert attention away from the things he’s not ready to talk about. With his brother and lifeline gone, he's also a lot more dependent on the people around him now. It's something he has to grow past. 

3 years after Chara’s initial fall, another human falls, and is handed over to Captain of the Guard Alphys. Working with the human, she crosses the barrier. Undyne and Gale eagerly await news, and finally, after months, she returns with the seven souls needed to break the barrier. “Volunteers” she found. Chara included.

With this second chance being the kick in the pants he needs, Gale decides to move out of Undyne's, stop mooching, and build the better life his brother always wanted for him. It takes a lot of work, and those scars still run deep, but he's doing better for himself and actively working hard to better his life, as well as the lives of other monsters affected by the human.

It helps him sleep at night. Maybe one day it'll be more than just coping.

a few days ago I went to nap and my mom was like "if you wake up and we're not here we're kayaking and will be back" and I said okay and she said "stay here!! wait until we come back" and I was kind of 🙄 about it because I'm Mature Now. but I Do have a long and storied history of waking up, not seeing anyone around (sometimes because it's the middle of the night and they're sleeping) and then just Leaving and Getting Very Lost

Love to just sally forth wildly into the woods. Love to accept car rides from strangers because it's pouring rain and I'm alone on the train tracks. Love to frostbite my feet because of The Stim Feelings leading me to just Run Outside Barefoot In The Cold. Sometimes you just gotta elope!!!

Yeses to Vera having some sensory ability! Dolores is definitely autistic for sure, her squeaks are part of her stims/possible echolalia? I love love love her and Mariano as parents with the drawings, so cute!

As for the art book, I highly recommend it, it's amazing and the capybara saying the marriage is a shame is one of my favourite parts. And also Dolores looking like she's about to crack at any given moment.

I'm really enjoying Australia as well! Got a wicked case of sunburn that is finally starting to calm down, dropped my phone in the ocean (writing this on my tablet) and had a cockatoo on my hat! Also we went snorkeling, kayaking and sandboarding today on an island, it was awesome! Saw so many fish and it was brilliant

Dolores being autistic has my whole heart!!!😤😤😤 Personally, I wouldn’t say her squeaks are a trait on its own, since it's a behaviour a lot of Colombians do, however her sensitivity to sounds is so neurodivergent it's criminal💞🤧 plus, I hc Mariano as autistic too, since I think its an interesting way of looking at why he's so quick to 'fall in love', I think he just doesn't understand how to process certain feelings. Ahhh i love them sm💖💖

IZ: he will fiddle with his earlobe or hearing aid, but otherwise, he continues to act confident.

ILYA: He avoids eye contact and will rub his neck. He hates to acknowledge when he’s feeling shy or nervous, and he will deny it if it’s pointed out - though his defensiveness isn’t convincing anyone

DANI: She will hide her shyness/nervousness behind a bright smile and continue acting like everything is just peachy keen! But as soon as she thinks no one is looking, she runs her fingers through her hair and needs a moment to breathe.

THESEUS: He clenches his fist tightly, hiding them behind his back if he can help it. It’s the only real tell that people will be able to notice since he’s a generally quiet guy who prefers to listen rather than talk.

ROUX: HE WILL NOT STOP CHATTERING. Roux is such a nervous talker that he won’t be able to stop himself from rambling on and on. And if he’s standing up, he’s most likely shifting from left to right.

IZ: He has to pace when he’s angry, anything to keep himself from lashing out. If he’s in the middle of an argument, he turns his hearing aid off and tells them flat out “I need  Generally, he looks for alone time and delves into his art in order to process his feelings.

ILYA: He really doesn’t like to be around anyone when he’s angry. He’ll take his bike or skateboard out and just for a ride until he can calm down enough to be rational again. He really dislikes arguing when his temper has flared up.

DANI: She will throw shit if she’s angry with a stranger. If it’s with someone she knows, she won’t do that out of base respect, and instead opts to hold tapping her other fingers against her thumbs, needing to keep her hands busy until she can get to a safe place where it’s just her. Dani can generally keep her sadness hidden well, but still stims with her hands.

THESEUS: He goes to the beach. He’s always going to the beach, but when he’s upset, he likes to sit at the end of the dock and fish while he quietly stews in his emotions and tries to rationalize everything - he dislikes feeling like he’s being irrational.

ROUX: He cries. No matter the emotion, if Roux is feeling too much of anything, he’ll turn into a puddle of tears and he HATES it. He will want time to calm down and wash his face before coming back.

🙌 - mannerisms that your muse has when they’re extremely happy

IZ: He is literally so excited and all smiles and won’t stop chatting.

ILYA: He gets quiet and flustered. After feeling sad for so long, he doesn’t quite know how to process feeling immense happiness all at once.

DANI: She’s very excitable and more prone to impulsive actions. She will also want to share whatever has made her happy with others, whether it be a material object or news. 

THESEUS: When extremely happy, he’ll crack a little smile. 

ROUX: Roux also likes to talk about what’s made him happy.

🤞 - what’s the most impulsive thing you can picture your muse doing

THESE FIVE ARE LITERALLY ALWAYS SUPER IMPUSLIVE. lol! Like, I literally think “Oh yeah, it can’t ever get as bad as that one time Dani dropped in for a surprise visit to Ilya and IZ and it ended with them all waking up the next morning with Iz having two new tattoos, Ilya’s room thrashed, and some parrot screeching at them to wake up.

But for real, it’s all circumstantial just who impulsive they are and if they’re around someone who will tell them no - usually that person has to be Theseus... until it comes to athletics, like kayaking and such

☠️ - does your muse fear death? DEATH TW

IZ: He isn’t sure, he doesn’t really think about it a lot and doesn’t see the point in getting himself worked up about it 

ILYA: Yes. After his first (and last) near death experience, he’s had a really hard time coming to terms with death as an inevitable fate.

DANI: No. Dani’s made peace with it a long time ago while exploring her spirituality.

THESEUS: He wouldn’t say that it’s his biggest fear, and just something they all have to deal with sooner or later. To him, there’s no point fearing the inevitable.

ROUX: Not really sure. There are times where Roux really doesn’t care, but there are times where it does make him anxious.

5 reasons why Till is baby?

Reason 1: He needs a kiddie leash. The second the man gets bored, he’s off, usually to some wooded area where no one can find him. I don’t know if he has ADHD or what, but between kayaking to a different town in the Yukon to his bandmates getting him a cellphone just to help them find him, he is a free wandering boy. 

Reason 2: He plays with everything like a little kid. He rides on the luggage carousel. He pretends to drive a speedboat (I loved that little clip because it seemed like he was randomly flipping switches and only succeeded in turning on and off the lights). His Na Chui box? Sound stim! He was so delighted. 

Reason 3: Till with kids:

Off hand, I can’t find that footage of him shoveling candy at a little boy during a book signing. But Till is super cute and natural with kids, like a big kid himself.

Reason 4: Till is a finger/thumb sucker:

I just want to get him a big paci.

what are gladstone and fethry up to in your au? i'm guessing that gladstone and scrooge have a better relationship since their lives are a lot less intense in general, and i don't think anyone had ever been on bad terms with fethry.

Everybody loves Fethry in the LDU. He has two mom and an older brother who just adore him.

“Lulubelle is Fethry and Abner’s kooky, alternative, crystal healing, vegan mom who wears giant jean overalls with a big pocket that has a sunflower patch on it. She likes to putter around in the garden, attend alien conferences, and finger paint with her kids. 

Eider is Fethry and Abner’s more no-nonsense, stern mum who doesn’t suffer fools gladly but very much loves her impulsive weirdo wife for the spontaneity she brings to their lives. She met Lulubelle at a women’s music festival and knew immediately they’d one day have 3 giant huskies and live in a cabin in the woods together. She’s one of your outdoors-y mom’s who loves to go hiking, kayaking, and see boring historical monuments.  She has some high-power position on the corporate ladder that she’s extremely good at. Like Scrooge level business acumen.”

I swore I wrote a post on Abner, but I can’t find it for the life of me. There’s an age-gap between the two; Abner is college-aged while Fethry is around 11-ish. Regardless of the difference in years, they get along really well.

Donald is Fethry’s pseudo-big brother, and Fethry looks up to his older cousin a lot. Donald is a little huffy about how much Fethry clings to him, but its an act. Donald will jump to Fethry’s defense at the drop of a hat and clearly takes his role as older cousin seriously.

Gladstone is a year younger than Donald. Both his parents are alive and his mother Daphne dotes over her only son. His father Goostave on the otherhand continually forgets he even has a son. Gladstone wants nothing more than to win his approval, but Goostave still isn’t sure who the hell let this weird goose kid with the curly hair is or why he’s always at his house. Consequently, Gladstone is pretty unhappy during his childhood and desperately craves paternal affection. He overcompensates for his insecurities by being a huge, uppity jerk to everyone. This goes triple for Donald. Not only do Gladstone and Donald not get along because of their good luck/bad luck magnetism, but Gladstone is intensely jealous of Donald. Gladstone has everything: good looks, good luck, two parents, a great house, rich parents so why the hell is Donald happier than him?

The two of them start rebuilding their relationship post-college after the notorious unaired promo episode of MCMCaM. (X)

Scrooge loves Gladstone and Fethry, but he definitely sees them more as “Donald’s cousins” than “his nephews.” He’s much, much closer to Donald, but he does his best to open himself up to his extended family. Scrooge finds Fethry completely mystifying; everything Fethry does confuses Scrooge. For instance, Fethry flaps to stim, and Scrooge has no clue why Fethry does this. Even so, he’s respectful of Fethry’s differences and extends the same patience and kindness to him as he does to Donald. Scrooge relies heavily on Fethry’s parents to steer him right if he messes up when interacting with Fethry. 

Gladstone isn’t Scrooge’s.... favorite nephew. Scrooge tries hard not to hold a grudge against Gladstone for years of antagonizing Donald. He doesn’t always succeed. Coupled with that stormy relationship with his ward, Scrooge is put off by Gladstone’s reliance on luck to get by in life as he sees it as the antithesis to his own personal philosophy. On the other hand, Gladstone doesn’t get along very well with Scrooge. He’s Donald’s uncle after all. The caretaker of his “worst enemy” isn’t exactly his favorite person, especially when said caretaker seems to shower his ward with the love and affection that Gladstone lacks from his own parental figure.

You are allowed to ask for help.

This is a place that I’m kind of stuck right now.

Growing up with diagnosed giftedness and extremely obvious but never diagnosed ADHD, I learned that there were some legitimate reasons to ask for help in school, and then there were bad reasons to ask for help. If you’d listened to the lesson, or even missed the lesson due to being sick or something, and you simply didn’t understand the material, that was a good and honorable reason to ask for help.

But if you didn’t hear the instructions, or if you missed a few words of the lecture, asking for them to be repeated was wrong and disrespectful, because you had chosen not to listen well enough. I had it drummed into me that I could never ask people to repeat themselves in any sort of group setting, and even diagnosis didn’t really break me of it. In college one day, I was trying extra and specially hard to listen to the lecture. But I missed one word, just one, and because of that, I couldn’t understand the entire second half. It literally never occurred to me that I could ask.

Years later, I took a white-water kayaking class. It opened with a lot of verbal instructions, which I had trouble following because I was in a little boat outdoors. I didn’t hear everything, and, despite the fact that missing instructions could have resulted in literal DEATH, it still took hours for me to realize that I was allowed to ask for help.

You are allowed to ask for clarification, even if you “shouldn’t” need to ask. When people say things, they generally want to be heard, even if it means repeating something.

You are allowed to ask co-workers and other members of your household to trade off on tasks that are particularly challenging for you, because task specialization is a thing that humans do, disabled or not.

You are allowed to scribble, play with silly putty or otherwise stim in public in whatever (silent) way you need to help your brain focus. Some people might be assholes about it, but they’re wrong.

You are allowed to have needs that other people don’t necessarily share.

Levidromes

A levidrome is a word that when spelled backwards makes another word. Well, at least not yet. It is not in the Oxford English Dictionary. Levi Budd is a six-year-old boy from British Columbia in Canada who has coined the term 'levidrome' after spotting that the word 'STOP' spells 'POTS' backwards. After realising that there is no such word in English for this phenomena, a social media campaign has started to get this word in popular usage (hence this post). I wrote a short Python script this morning that will pull all of the levidromes from a dictionary file. The full list is copied below.

It is interesting to note that some levidromes are also palindromes. I wonder whether we need a new word to describe this phenomenon also?  Furthermore, there is no word in English for "a word that you make up in order to make another word make sense". I suggest: "emordivel" ?
