Do you only use color pencils?

I'm so glad you asked me this anon because now I can ramble about my art supplies! (⁠◍⁠•⁠ᴗ⁠•⁠◍⁠)

So when I started this challenge I thought it would be fun to only work with cheap office supplies (yes, I consider dollar store colored pencils an office supply). You see, limiting your art supplies is fun because it forces you to be creative and experiment with different looks. And the texture of colored pencils works really well to imitate the texture of feathers.

However! Using only cheap colored pencils gets kind of boring if you have to do a challenge for an entire year. So after around 50 birds I started slowly adding to my arsenal:

Higher quality colored pencils

Some birds have bright vibrant colors which are impossible to achieve with bad colored pencils. Which is why I added some slightly better quality pencils to the mix.

I still don't have a good green pencil which is why it took me so long to draw a kakapo and why I still haven't drawn a kea...

Highlighters in different colors

You might not think that highlights are a very useful art supply but they have been very useful in this challenge for two reasons: 1) They are great for creating the shiny iridescent quality of some feathers (see my drawings of hummingbirds for examples) 2) how the f do you show the difference between yellow and white when working on yellow paper?? Yellow highlighter!

Black fineliners

The texture of pencils does not work well if you want to draw something that's fully black. This is especially important to me because my favorite birds, coots, are black.

Fineliners are the markers I have found that gives me the least texture for the ideal slick black bird look.

White Posca pen

For making white details. I use it most often for making eyes and feathers look shiny but sometimes also for larger details.

Since I only have around 50 birds left to draw I probably won't be adding anything new before the challenge is over (unless I find a good green pencil lol)

Congratulations!! Next time, once you're done with the whole set, tell us what's been your favourite book! I'm excited for you, TIBH is excellent and - imo - the funniest of the series (which i know is a strange way to sell a MURDER MYSTERY but here we go). And Kea Niven!! Anon, you need to know that when I saw this ask, I immediately started chanting "LORE DUMP! LORE DUMP!" in my head. This serves as your warning.

First and foremost, let's go through the current cast of this AU. I've got a working list of every driver I've assigned a wing color to so far, though whether everyone actually gets mentioned is going to depend on how my plans unfold. A quick note that the only character I'm not including in this list is Martijn, since his wings are meant to be a surprise. For now, this list consists of only F1 drivers and a couple F1-adjacent characters. The cast may expand as I assign more wing colors.

Some have wings based on real birds, others don't. Those with real-bird wings have the species name listed, you can Google them if you're curious about their appearance.

Lando - pure white Max - Loggerhead shrike (the most aggressive shrike species in the world; they can take down prey significantly larger than themselves. And they have a penchant for impalement) Alex - European bee-eater George - Turtle dove Lewis - Bateleur (an African eagle species) Nico R. - polished silver Esteban - Maghreb magpie (pretty similar to the Eurasian magpie) Pierre - layered shades of cloud gray Logan - Florida scrub jay (a blue-and-white corvid native to Florida) Oscar - dusky orange ombre Carlos - earthy chocolate brown Charles - scarlet red, with white lacing on primaries Mark W. - Black kite (this is one of those birds from Australia that starts fires to force prey out into the open) Daniel - Whistling kite (also a fire-starting Australian bird. Why does Australia have THREE SPECIES of pyromaniac birds?!) Jack - Galah (a kind of cockatoo) Liam - Kea (a parrot from New Zealand)

Now, for hiding one's wings - I will admit that maybe what I've come up with isn't the most elegant solution. But once I got the idea of some wing colors being seen as "bad," I immediately thought, "what if someone chose to always keep their wings hidden to avoid being judged? How would they do that?" Then once I latched onto the idea, I came up with the plot of the first fic and realized that I needed to find a solution if I wanted to write this story. So then I figured, if I'm making a world where humans have wings, then I've already given up some of this story's realism, so it shouldn't be too unbelievable if I come up with a fantastical way to hide wings, too.

In this AU, there are special pendants people can wear that, when they come in contact with their skin, will hide someone's wings from view. They are still there, and will reappear when the pendant is removed, but as long as the pendant is on, the wings are not visible, the person can't use their wings for flight or any other purpose, nothing will interact physically with their wings, and it's essentially like they were never there at all. No one knows exactly how the pendants work, but the leading theory is that the ore they're made of emits some sort of energy or has some other property that interacts with the physical structure of wings, leading to them essentially disappearing. Scientists have studied this phenomenon for years and still haven't figured out what exactly is going on here (they also don't know why humans are the only primates who somehow ended up with wings. Basically, there are a lot of mysteries there. I don't currently plan to delve into the scientific or mystical aspects of this, since the main cast are all F1 drivers and not, like, professional scientists whose job is to research this, though who knows, maybe it'll still be touched on at some point)

People typically hide their wings for social or cultural norms, for tasks that would be easier to perform without them, or if they just want to walk around without their weight for a little bit. Sometimes, though, they're hidden for personal reasons. It's considered rude to just blatantly ask someone why their wings are hidden, especially during a first meeting, though if you've known someone for a while, it's generally expected that you'll show your wings to them eventually, and it's considered odd if you don't. Choosing to hide them completely from everyone it very unusual, and is often a tricky subject for others to navigate, as the reasons for doing so are usually very personal. Some people who choose to do this hide their wings because they're embarrassed or ashamed about their appearance, be that due to their color or species, or due to injury or damage. Others choose to hide them because they're disabled and can only barely fly, or are completely unable to.

There are sometimes people who are born without the ability to fly, though it's far more more common for them to have disabled wings rather than no wings at all. Being flightless is considered a major disability, and while they can still lead perfectly normal lives, there will be some activities that they simply can't do. The treatment of flightless/wingless people varies a lot throughout the world, with most places giving them aid or assistance in areas that they might struggle in (namely alternative travel options for those who can't fly on their own, or therapy or enrichment services for those who struggle psychologically with it), though some places are a lot better than others, and some people do look on them with judgment or scorn. There are some places where the flightless are seen as second-class citizens no matter what they do, and some people see them as "lesser" than them, while other look at them with pity. It really varies from area to area, though I'm happy to say that in this day and age, more and more people are treating the flightless with kindness, acceptance, and equality. Some flightless people, if they have any wings, will wear them with quiet strength, but many choose to just use pendants to hide them, since they can't be used anyway.

For those with minor disabilities who want to try and use their wings as normally as possible, there are options for prosthetics. Depending on their purpose, some prosthetics, such as a few fake feathers or a false joint, can allow a person to fly, while others, like a large swathe of fake feathers or an entire fake section of a limb, can fix a wing's physical appearance but won't allow for flight. (fake feathers usually aren't as effective as the real thing, so a few fake feathers on your wing might not compromise your flight, but a lot will. Some people decide that having wings that at least appear whole is worth it, while others don't bother. And obviously, if you need a full-on metal-and-plastic appendage, then you aren't gonna be getting off the ground with that) Prosthetics aren't affected by wing pendants, so they have to be removed before using a pendant and reattached afterwards.

Within 2 years I went from being a casual listener to becoming obsessive and making Will Wood a kea part of my personality to actively starting to resent him and his music. Today when I opened Spotify and saw he released something instead of being excited and going to listen to it I genuinely felt kinda resentful and I finally unfollowed him after a year of obsessing over him and making him my only personality trait to actively disliking him, his songs, and any fan art I come across. Also I don't need any recommendations, I've moved on from him and I now have a new artist I listen to. Also I was the person that posted a while back about the ex making will wood a competition so it kinda makes sense I dislike him now

Hahahaha you're so correct for this anon, I am truly incapable of favourite anythings. In no particular order:

Kiwi. Obviously. I think people who haven't seen one IRL don't realise a) how big these little fuckers are and b) what kind of NOISE they make. They're chaos demons and I love them. A few years ago one punctured a guy's spleen (idk what happened but I'm inclined to take the side of the kiwi anyway).

Kea. One day they'll be our overlords and I for one welcome them. Thief parrots my beloved—they can pick locks! They'll send one in to distract tourists while the others steal their food! They're just clever, clever birds and I adore them.

[Note on both of the above: they're te reo Māori words, they don't get pluralised with an 's'! One kiwi, two kiwi, three kea, four kea. For kiwi, yes that applies when you're using it as a term for people too!]

Snow leopards. Pretty kitties. I've only seen them in person at the Big Bear Zoo and that was enough for me to fall absolutely in love with them.

Tigers. IDK why, really, I've just always been a little bit obsessed with them. Also pretty kitties.

If that's too much work for some of these dumbass anons, There are literal screenshots showing that it was transferred to omori (aka g0blinns), the person who tried to bid above the AB. So unless the person who actually AB the design willingly let omori have it, Kea straight up lied to ya'll and and yall worshipped her so hard you fell for it.

hiiiii omg ^_^ part 2 of don't lie to me is going well.! i recently completely rewrote the opening scene which was DESPERATELY needed... the first one i wrote was just sooo blehhh.... but its much better now <3 its still a bunch of puzzle pieces that need to be put together.... this ask actually made me open the document and reread everything and got me going a lil bit..... i dont remember if i ever posted any snippets but i might have some to post if anyone wants :3

still trying to decide if i should add smut or not.... the struggle of a lifetime....

3am thinking again

Part of me wonders if the algabraliens link their value to their self worth. I know its probably not intentional and im looking too far into things, but it seems numbers under five generally seem to be more unstable whether that be attitude or acts (both in four’s case). While the numbers 5 and above seem to worry about their value less (like they’re more confident?)

Six is similar to four personality wise but despite being a bit of a gremlin they’re still pretty emotionally stable and dont take things as badly

And in tpot with gaty we see firsthand how much two’s value (self worth maybe?) impacted them. Kinda makes me think they took bfb’s contestants because it would help them make up for being a lesser number. Maybe two thought if they could win against four they’d get more “value”. (Not literally tho)

Or maybe they’re aware theres a unspoken rule of value and find that BS and want to find a way to help them feel worth that doesnt correlate to how much value they have.

Not saying any of the algabraliens are bad however-

We’ve met all of them (exept 3 and 1, who also lending to this theory seem quite annoyed) and they’re all quite nice in some way so if they are making the lesser numbers feel bad because of their value then its not intentional on their part.

Five seems confused when four specifically calls them out in the most recent sub special.

But it does make sense on how sourly four reacts to five as no matter what they do they’ll always be less than them.

Not defending any of their actions ofc though, just sounded like a theory.

Its just interesting to think that maybe the algabraliens tie their self worth to their value which is why four wanted some control over being less than themself (the objects) other than because of their bfdi obsession, and two wanted to change their own self worth by beating a larger number.

I sadly do agree with the anon on the pkmn blog rn bc I also noticed a change in how you respond aswell.

i can think of two examples straight off my head of when you seemed biased. srry to bring it back up but ya the first time was when the porn proportioned terra discourse happened. you spoke for the anon and changed the meaning of what they said to “oh they just meant kea should be more varied” when its clear thats not what ppl were upset about. the second example was when you also made it seem like anons who had imo very legit reasons to be upset about the way you handled the “speculation” were just being crazy out of nowhere. like you said they were like “you should die in a fire if u think this is ok” when no one said that, they were just rightfully disgusted and concerned.

ik this is a drama blog but the truth does matter too even when it means conceding that someone u disagree with was not bad in a situation or also that someone u agree with was bad.

prefacing my reply by saying im not arguing against the point this anon made or trying to paint my responses linked as “correct” or anything, just giving my reasoning for stuff

i will say that these 2 situations are the ones that have exhausted me the most when it comes to topics on here, which does further my point about how i can be bitter when topics get more aggressive. im not sure if i should take this as an issue with myself, or whether to show that being nasty to myself and others in my inbox just helps nobody. lets go with both!

starting with example 1, i felt like i made it pretty clear that i had my own interpretation of the comment, i think i even said as much within my reply. i will admit though i dont really have any sort of fondness for kea and their previous sexualization of terra adopts did leave a bad taste in my mouth regarding them. regardless, i think the reason i gave og anon so much slack is because of the (in my opinion) unbalanced response to it in the first reply. i think that there should be some more disconnect when it comes to critiquing a person ideas as opposed to the person themselves; what i mean by that is you can say “that comment you made or that idea you hold is misogynistic” without making aggressive assumptions as the person replying did. i think that maybe it makes it my fault for not being clearer that assumptions like that arent welcome here, or maybe its more my fault for having a very specific expectation of how people should interact. either way

example 2 i think has a bit of a shorter explanation, this specific ask set me off about the whole situation, since i agree it really shouldnt have gone on as long as it did. but as ive stated many times before i prefer to post everything in my inbox just to be more trustworthy as a mod and i was expecting that ppl could just let the topic die on its own. the assumptions thing was also happening here, and with the arguing going on it just pissed me off. i will say about the specific “die in a fire comment” that wasnt me so much saying that anons were claiming stuff like that, but rather me being hyperbolic in explaining my stance. i can be really hyperbolic on here when it comes to jokes and i can realize sometimes it isnt the most obvious thing, but thats my way of communicating for when im not being the most serious. with that specific situation, i was getting really annoyed that people were winding down to slapfighting, and if i presented the opposing anons as crazy or not really having a leg to stand on, thats my bad. i can see where both sides are coming from, it was just at that point in the argument i really just wanted it to be done and i maintain the stance that it really wasnt any of our business

what’s your favorite bird I must know

Didisusj I literally didn't see this a s k I'm a horrible person 😔😔😔. My favourite bird really depends, why I have a favourite corvid, favourite parrot (and then I have favourites from the divided sections of parrots, ie: new world vs old word). But alas if I had to choose it'd be the Kea!

The Kea is a parrot found in primarily in the Alpine region of New Zealand. These funky little parrots are rather intelligent (think of an african grey or corvid) and rather mischievous birds. They will not hesitate to wreck your car or steal your whole sandwich! They're highly social birds as well and learn from one another. Sadly these birds are currently endangered due to extensive hunting by farmers that thought these birds were killing their sheep. As well, since these birds can be seen as nuisances to certain people and their property...they aren't treated to well

Anyway I'm rambling, my dream is to study the Kea (and many other birds!) When I become a reputable enough ornithologist.
